Hybrid Ni/Co/Co3O4 nanoparticles embedded in graphitic carbon for efficient overall water splitting can be rapidly prepared on Ni foam in a few minutes by microwave synthesis and subsequent laser-scribing.

Diffusion-induced stresses in Sn, a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries owing to its high specific capacity, depend significantly on the phase transformation mechanism. In this study, an in-situ X-ray diffraction study is performed to reveal the phase transformation mechanism in Sn as functions of the discharge rate and Sn anode dimensions. In a 500 nm-thick Sn thin-film discharged at C/9 or a 100 nm-thick Sn thin-film discharged at 0.1C, the Sn phase transforms sequentially to Li2Sn5, followed by β-LiSn and a-Li7Sn3 in three steps, where each step involves reaction-controlled lithiation. However, in a 500 nm-thick Sn thin-film discharged at 2C or a 2 μm-thick Sn thin-film discharged at 0.1C, the a-Li7Sn3 phase is directly formed via one-step reaction-controlled lithiation between Sn and a-Li7Sn3. A transition from three-step to one-step results in a steep gradient in the mismatch strain, thereby causing early failure. Finite element simulations show a lower J-integral for the three steps compared with that of a one-step reaction, thereby confirming previously reported experimental observations. For a specified transformation mechanism, the J-integral is lower for smaller Sn micropillars. Therefore, the mechanical reliability of the Sn anode can be enhanced significantly when lithiated under phase transformation mechanism involving three-reaction-controlled lithiations, as well as utilizing a small Sn anode measuring less than 200 nm.

Binary metal sulfides have been explored as sodium storage materials owing to their high theoretical capacity and high stable cyclability. Nevertheless, their relative high charge voltage and relatively low practical capacity make them less attractive as an anode material. To resolve the problem, addition of alloying elements is considerable. Copper antimony sulfide is investigated as a representative case. In this study, we do not only perform electrochemical characterization on CuSbS2, but also investigate its nonequilibrium sodiation pathway employing in-/ex situ transmission electron microscopy, in situ X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory calculations. Our finding provides valuable insights on sodium storage into ternary metal sulfide including an alloying element.

Charge doping to Mott insulators is critical to realize high-temperature superconductivity, quantum spin liquid state, and Majorana fermion, which would contribute to quantum computation. Mott insulators also have a great potential for optoelectronic applications; however, they showed insufficient photoresponse in previous reports. To enhance the photoresponse of Mott insulators, charge doping is a promising strategy since it leads to effective modification of electronic structure near the Fermi level. Intercalation, which is the ion insertion into the van der Waals gap of layered materials, is an effective charge-doping method without defect generation. Herein, we showed significant enhancement of optoelectronic properties of a layered Mott insulator, α-RuCl3, through electron doping by organic cation intercalation. The electron-doping results in substantial electronic structure change, leading to the bandgap shrinkage from 1.2 eV to 0.7 eV. Due to localized excessive electrons in RuCl3, distinct density of states is generated in the valence band, leading to the optical absorption change rather than metallic transition even in substantial doping concentration. The stable near-infrared photodetector using electronic modulated RuCl3 showed 50 times higher photoresponsivity and 3 times faster response time compared to those of pristine RuCl3, which contributes to overcoming the disadvantage of a Mott insulator as a promising optoelectronic device and expanding the material libraries.

An elastic printed circuit board (E-PCB) is a conductive framework used for the facile assembly of system-level stretchable electronics. E-PCBs require elastic conductors that have high conductivity, high stretchability, tough adhesion to various components, and imperceptible resistance changes even under large strain. We present a liquid metal particle network (LMP Net ) assembled by applying an acoustic field to a solid-state insulating liquid metal particle composite as the elastic conductor. The LMP Net conductor satisfies all the aforementioned requirements and enables the fabrication of a multilayered high-density E-PCB, in which numerous electronic components are intimately integrated to create highly stretchable skin electronics. Furthermore, we could generate the LMP Net in various polymer matrices, including hydrogels, self-healing elastomers, and photoresists, thus showing their potential for use in soft electronics.

Protein encapsulation into nanocarriers has been extensively studied to improve the efficacy and stability of therapeutic proteins. However, the chemical modification of proteins or new synthetic carrier materials are essential to achieve a high encapsulation efficiency and structural stability of proteins, which hinders their clinical applications. New strategies to physically incorporate proteins into nanocarriers feasible for clinical uses are required to overcome the current limitation. Here we report the spontaneous protein-induced reorganization of 'pre-formed' unilamellar lipid vesicles to efficiently incorporate proteins within multilamellar protein-lipid hybrid vesicles without chemical modification. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) binds to the surface of cationic unilamellar lipid vesicles and induces layer-by-layer self-assembly of the vesicles. The protein is spontaneously entrapped in the interstitial layers of a multilamellar structure with extremely high loading efficiency, ~99%, through polyionic interactions as predicted by molecular dynamics simulation. The loaded protein exhibits much higher structural, chemical, and biological stability compared to free protein. The method is also successfully applied to several other proteins. This work provides a promising method for the highly efficient encapsulation of therapeutic proteins into multilamellar lipid vesicles without the use of specialized instruments, high energy, coupling agents, or organic solvents.

Multiscale and multimodal imaging of material structures and properties provides solid ground on which materials theory and design can flourish. Recently, KAIST announced 10 flagship research fields, which include KAIST Materials Revolution: Materials and Molecular Modeling, Imaging, Informatics and Integration (M3I3). The M3I3 initiative aims to reduce the time for the discovery, design and development of materials based on elucidating multiscale processing-structure-property relationship and materials hierarchy, which are to be quantified and understood through a combination of machine learning and scientific insights. In this review, we begin by introducing recent progress on related initiatives around the globe, such as the Materials Genome Initiative (U.S.), Materials Informatics (U.S.), the Materials Project (U.S.), the Open Quantum Materials Database (U.S.), Materials Research by Information Integration Initiative (Japan), Novel Materials Discovery (E.U.), the NOMAD repository (E.U.), Materials Scientific Data Sharing Network (China), Vom Materials Zur Innovation (Germany), and Creative Materials Discovery (Korea), and discuss the role of multiscale materials and molecular imaging combined with machine learning in realizing the vision of M3I3. Specifically, microscopies using photons, electrons, and physical probes will be revisited with a focus on the multiscale structural hierarchy, as well as structure-property relationships. Additionally, data mining from the literature combined with machine learning will be shown to be more efficient in finding the future direction of materials structures with improved properties than the classical approach. Examples of materials for applications in energy and information will be reviewed and discussed. A case study on the development of a Ni-Co-Mn cathode materials illustrates M3I3's approach to creating libraries of multiscale structure-property-processing relationships. We end with a future outlook toward recent developments in the field of M3I3.

Graphene liquid cell electron microscopy (GLC-EM), a cutting-edge liquid-phase EM technique, has become a powerful tool to directly visualize wet biological samples and the microstructural dynamics of nanomaterials in liquids. GLC uses graphene sheets with a one carbon atom thickness as a viewing window and a liquid container. As a result, GLC facilitates atomic-scale observation while sustaining intact liquids inside an ultra-high-vacuum transmission electron microscopy chamber. Using GLC-EM, diverse scientific results have been recently reported in the material, colloidal, environmental, and life science fields. Here, the developments of GLC fabrications, such as first-generation veil-type cells, second-generation well-type cells, and third-generation liquid-flowing cells, are summarized. Moreover, recent GLC-EM studies on colloidal nanoparticles, battery electrodes, mineralization, and wet biological samples are also highlighted. Finally, the considerations and future opportunities associated with GLC-EM are discussed to offer broad understanding and insight on atomic-resolution imaging in liquid-state dynamics.

The development of high-tap density electrode materials that can simultaneously achieve stable electrochemical performance at high charge/discharge rates is critically in demand. Herein, we propose an innovative material design that can offer high tap density and excellent rate capabilities by using Co3O4 nanograin-interconnected secondary particles (Co3O4 NISPs). By taking advantage of a conversion reaction that forms Co from Co3O4, we demonstrate that Co3O4 NISPs are capable of creating a number of metallic Co sites along with a number of vacant sites in-between nanograins. Electrochemical tests that reveal reduced internal cell resistance and more accessible Li diffusion are achieved for Co3O4 NISPs compared with Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs). Additionally, in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the insulating intermediate product (CoO) is formed less on the Co3O4 NISPs, which can enhance the charge transport. Attributed to the combinatorial effects of Co3O4 nanograins that form metallic Co upon conversion and secondary particles that enable high tap density, Co3O4 NISPs show the most outstanding volumetric capacity (2167.3 mA h cm−3 at a current density of 500 mA g−1) among spinel-type metal oxide electrode materials researched so far.

MXenes have been reported to have excellent electrical and thermal properties theoretically. However, the actual properties of the synthesized MXene are far less than expected. This discrepancy arises mostly from the structural defects formed during synthesis. This work demonstrates that the thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of the Ti3C2 MXene can be readily improved via the vapor phase infiltration (VPI) phenomenon of platinum (Pt) which usually occurs in the conventional atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. The infiltrated Pt atoms are found to cure Ti-defects in the MXene and to build bridges that interconnect MXene nanoflakes by creating covalent Pt–C bonds, which act as highly efficient channels for electrical and thermal conduction. The Pt infiltrated MXene displays drastic enhancement in thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties, simultaneously. Notably, both in-plane electrical/thermal conductivity and cross-plane electrical/thermal conductivity are found to significantly increase (∼2.4/∼1.8 times and ∼6.6/∼5.0 times, respectively). Electrothermal heaters made by using the Pt-infiltrated MXene exhibit outstanding efficiency, high heating rate, and good stability.

Chemical vapor deposition has been highlighted as a promising tool for facile graphene growth in a large area. However, grain boundaries impose detrimental effects on the mechanical strength or electrical mobility of graphene. Here, we demonstrate that high-pressure hydrogen treatment in the preannealing step plays a key role in fast and large grain growth and leads to the successful synthesis of large grain graphene in 10 s. Large single grains with a maximum size of ∼160 μm grow by recrystallization of nanograins, but ∼1% areal coverage of nanograins remains with 28-30° misorientation angles. Our findings will provide insights into mass production of high-quality graphene.

Antiferromagnetic spin waves have been predicted to offer substantial functionalities for magnonic applications due to the existence of two distinct polarizations, the right-handed and left-handed modes, as well as their ultrafast dynamics. However, experimental investigations have been hampered by the field-immunity of antiferromagnets. Ferrimagnets have been shown to be an alternative platform to study antiferromagnetic spin dynamics. Here we investigate thermally excited spin waves in ferrimagnets across the magnetization compensation and angular momentum compensation temperatures using Brillouin light scattering. Our results show that right-handed and left-handed modes intersect at the angular momentum compensation temperature where pure antiferromagnetic spin waves are expected. A field-induced shift of the mode-crossing point from the angular momentum compensation temperature and the gyromagnetic reversal reveal hitherto unrecognized properties of ferrimagnetic dynamics. We also provide a theoretical understanding of our experimental results. Our work demonstrates important aspects of the physics of ferrimagnetic spin waves and opens up the attractive possibility of ferrimagnet-based magnonic devices. Right- and left-handed spin-wave modes are identified in ferrimagnets, and their dynamics are revealed.

Graphene liquid cell transmission electron microscopy allows in situ observation of nanomaterial dynamics in a liquid environment. However, this method suffers from both random formation and small size of liquid pockets. Here, we introduce facile and mass-producible graphene-sealed well-type liquid cells with rational designs. The developed liquid cell structure and its formation mechanism depending on hole diameter (d)/spacer thickness (h) ratio are systematically analyzed. Finally, we show its high-resolution imaging and chemical analysis capability for nanoparticles and biomaterial applications. This work will provide an enhanced liquid cell platform for diverse liquid environmental studies.

The development of high performance and cost-effective electrode materials is the main challenge for the commercialization of sodium ion batteries. Here, we suggest a substantial iron-doped sodium vanadium fluorophosphate and sodium vanadium phosphate composite as a promising cathode. Iron substitution enhances ionic diffusivity and lowers the bandgap, and, thus, improves sodium storage performance. The origin of the enhanced performance is investigated employing in situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, density functional theory calculation, and electrochemical characterization. Moreover, we demonstrate its full cell configuration with earth-abundant element-based copper sulfide anodes. The suggested cathode and sodium ion battery full cell exhibits well-balanced sodium storage performance in terms of energy density, C-rate capability, cycling stability, and low cost. The low cost and high performance of the full cell make it an attractive choice for energy storage systems and high power applications to support lithium ion batteries.

Pore-fluid salinity has a predominant effect on the formation of soil suspensions, especially for clays adjacent to the ocean, including bays, lagoons, sounds, slough, and estuaries. However, the clay response to changes in pore fluid salinity (e.g., salt intrusion or extrusion) has yet to be investigated. Herein, the influence of salinity on the microscopic interaction and sedimentation behavior of halloysite clay was investigated in an aqueous condition. Macro-scale sedimentation experiments and in-situ microscopic observations showed that halloysite clays in pore fluids with high ionic strength tended to disperse because salt ions weaken the edge-to-face halloysite fabrics. In the ensuing drop of the salinity, salt ions adsorbed onto the double layer of the clay surface were not reversely released. Comparing to sediment with a similar initial salinity, desalination resulted in weakened edge-to-face structures (a lower initial settling rate) and loose final sediment (a higher final sediment void ratio). Our study provides a thorough understanding of the salt effect on sediment formation, including changes in the microscopic clay particle fabric as salinity changes.

Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) are capable of efficiency delivering mRNAs, miRNAs, bioactive lipids, and proteins to mammalian cells. Plant-derived EVs critically contribute to the ability of plants to defend against pathogen attacks at the plant cell surface. They also represent a novel candidate natural substance that shows potential to be developed for food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products. However, although plant-derived EVs are acknowledged as having potential for various industrial applications, little is known about how their stability is affected by storage conditions. In this study, we evaluated the stability of Dendropanax morbifera leaf-derived extracellular vesicles (LEVs) alone or combined with the preservatives, 1,3-butylene glycol (to yield LEVs-1,3-BG) or TMO (LEVs-TMO). We stored these formulations at −20, 4, 25, and 45 °C for up to 4 weeks, and compared the stability of fresh and stored LEVs. We also assessed the effect of freeze-thawing cycles on the quantity and morphology of the LEVs. We found that different storage temperatures and number of freeze-thawing cycles altered the stability, size distribution, protein content, surface charge, and cellular uptake of LEVs compared to those of freshly isolated LEVs. LEVs-TMO showed higher stability when stored at 4 °C, compared to LEVs and LEVs-1,3-BG. Our study provides comprehensive information on how storage conditions affect LEVs and suggests that the potential industrial applications of plant-derived EVs may be broadened by the use of preservatives.

As it governs the overall performance of lithium-ion batteries, understanding the reaction pathway of lithiation is highly desired. For Co3O4 nanoparticles as anode material, here, we report an initial conversion reaction pathway during lithiation. Using graphene liquid cell electron microscopy (GLC-EM), we reveal a CoO phase of the initial conversion product as well as morphological dynamics during Co3O4 lithiation. In accordance with the in situ TEM observation, we confirmed that the Co3O4 to CoO conversion is a thermodynamically favorable process by calculating the theoretical average voltage based on density functional theory. Our observation will provide a useful insight into the oxide electrode that undergoes conversion reaction.

Development of feasible electrode materials is significant to realize high energy density Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Tin(IV) oxide, in particular, has a number of merits including higher theoretical capacity compared with graphite (1493 mAh g–1), low cost, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, huge volume changes and subsequent pulverization usually resulted in poor capacity retention of SnO2, where various nanostructures have been adopted to overcome its intrinsic limitations. Here we introduce the new insights into employing polycrystalline dense SnO2 nanospheres (NSs), rather than its hollow structures, as high-performance electrode for LIBs. Contrary to the previous notions, polycrystalline dense SnO2 NSs can exhibit highly stable cycle retention characteristics (1009.9 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g–1) as well as considerable rate capabilities (349 mAh g–1 at 5.0 A g–1), even superior to those of polycrystalline hollow SnO2 NSs. The formation of lithium sulfides as discharge products imparts high specific energy density to lithium sulfur batteries (LSBs), however, the involvement of soluble intermediates in the battery reaction makes it challenging to achieve it reversibly for extended cycles. The precise understanding of phase transitions from the soluble intermediates to solid discharge products would aid in fundamentally resolving practical issues involving the intermediates, and thus allow the realization of long-lived high-energy-density LSBs. Herein, we utilize liquid in situ transmission-electron-microscopy (TEM) to probe detailed liquid–solid reaction processes. It reveals that the surface nature of the host materials of the polysulfides critically influences the growth mechanism of lithium sulfides. It is elucidated that polar hosts induce instantaneous nucleation of lithium sulfides, followed by diffusion-controlled-to-reaction-limited growth kinetics and a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition. Moreover, it is verified that polysulfides are better immobilized in polar hosts, whereas polysulfide diffusion through nonpolar hosts is evidently observed, leading to the eventual degradation of cells. Based on these findings, an optimal host structure for sulfur is proposed, where the dual walls of polar (inner)/nonpolar (outer) spheres confine the polysulfides. The new cathode exhibits remarkable electrochemical performance, retaining a capacity of 4.3 mA h cm−2 over 400 cycles at a low electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 6.8 ml g−1, which rivals state-of-the-art LSBs. This work contributes the first liquid in situ TEM study of liquid–solid phase evolution for high energy electrode materials.
