The genus Cryptophagus Herbst comprises over 200 described species worldwide, with 10 Korean species. The genus Micrambe Thomson includes 101 species within 3 subgenera, and a single species, Micrambe (s. str.) abietis (Paykull), is recorded in Korea. In this study, two cryptophagid beetle species, Cryptophagus pumilus Reitter and Micrambe (Micrambinus) bimaculata (Panzer), are reported for the first time in the Korean Peninsula. Illustrations of habitus, diagnostic characters, and distribution maps for these two species are provided.

The genus Silvanoprus Reitter (Coleoptera: Silvanidae: Silvaninae) includes 20 known species worldwide, with 10 species in the Palearctic region and three species in Korea. In this study, two additional Korean species are recorded: Silvanoprus fagi (Guérin-Méneville), Silvanoprus longicollis (Reitter), and Silvanoprus scuticollis (Walker). Redescriptions and illustrations of habitus, diagnostic characters, a distribution map, and a key to the Korean Silvanoprus species are provided.

4. Complete mitochondrial genome of soil-dwelling Tyraphus nitidus Raffray, 1909 (Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae)

We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of the soil-dwelling rove beetle Tyraphus nitidus Raffray, 1909, from Korea. The mitochondrial genome was 16,742 bp in length and consists of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs). Except cox2, cox3, which use single T residue, and nad4, nad5, which use single A residue, typical PCGs use mitochondrial stop codon (TAR). The nucleotide base composition of the mitogenome is 42.2 % (A), 8.4 % (G), 36.6 % (T), and 12.8 % (C). Our phylogenetic analyses under the maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences produced a tree congruent in topology, placing the newly sequenced T. nitidus as sister to Diartiger fossulatus Sharp, 1883, within the subfamily Pselaphinae.

5. Characterization of the 2.5 MeV ELV electron accelerator electron source angular distribution using 3-D dose measurement and Monte Carlo simulations

Using the Monte Carlo method, the impact of the angular distribution of the electron source on the dose distribution for the 2.5 MeV ELV electron accelerator was explored. The experiment measured the 3-D dose distribution in the irradiation chamber for electron energies of 1.0 MeV and 2.5 MeV. The simulation used the MCNP6.2 code to evaluate three angular distribution models of the source: a mono-directional beam, a cone shape, and a triangular shape. Of the three models, the triangular shape with angles θ = 30°, φ = 0° best represents the angle of the scan hood through which the electron beam exits. The MCNP6.2 simulation results demonstrated that the triangular model is the most accurate representation of the angular distribution of the electron source for the 2.5 MeV ELV electron accelerator.

The genus Cryptophagus Herbst is one of the largest groups of the family Cryptophagidae Kirby (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea), and found in soil litter, under bark, nests of small animals, social insects, and stored products. Approximately 200 species of this genus have been described in the world and seven species have been recorded in the Korean Peninsula. During taxonomic study of this genus, we identified three additional species, Cryptophagus nitidulus Miller, C. obsoletus Reitter, and C. rufomaculus Lyubarsky, from Korean Peninsula. Redescriptions and illustrations of habitus, diagnostic characters, and collection localities for each species are provided.

The genus Atomaroides Lyubarsky is monotypic and distributed in China and Russian Far East. The genus Serratomaria Nakane & Hisamatsu includes three described species in Japan and Southeast Asia. In this study, two genera, Atomaroides and Serratomaria, are reported for the first time in Korea, with A. ussurica (Lyubarsky) and S. vulgaris Sasaji, respectively. Redescriptions and illustrations of habitus, diagnostic characters, and collection localities for each species are provided.

The genus Bryaxis Kugelann (Goniaceritae: Bythinini) is the most species-rich genus of the subfamily Pselaphinae and is mainly distributed in the Palearctic region. Although previous studies have documented 14 species in the Korean Peninsula, the true diversity, ecology, and immature stages of the genus are still inadequately known. In this study, five new Korean species are described: B. grandinodus sp. nov., B. uljinensis sp. nov., B. fabaiformis sp. nov., B. girinensis sp. nov., and B. nemorosus sp. nov. Illustrations of the habitus and other morphological details, and a distribution map are provided. In addition, Bryaxis leechanyoungi Nomura & Lee, 1993 is proposed as a new synonym of B. mahunkai Löbl, 1975 based on the original description and illustrations of diagnostic characters.

9. Two species of the genus Euconnus Thomson (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae) new to Korea

The genus Euconnus Thomson (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae) includes four species in Korea. In this study, E. (s. str.) fustiger and E. (s. str.) dulcis are recorded for the first time Korea and E. (Cladoconnus) rudimentalis is redescribed. As a result, the number of the Korean species of Euconnus is increased to six. A key descriptions, habitus illustrations, diagnostic characters, and a distribution map are provided.

The family Ptiliidae is one of the poorly known groups of beetles. Approximately 70 species are currently recorded in Japan and Russian Far East. In Korea, however, taxonomic studies involving ptiliid beetles were started with the recording of three species in 2020–2021. In this study, three additional ptiliid species, Baeocrara japonica, Cissidium elongatum, and Ptinella mekura are recorded in Korea for the first time. Illustrations of habitus, diagnostic characteristics, a distribution map, and a key to the Korean ptiliid species are provided.

The mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Aleochara (Aleochara) curtula (Goeze, 1777) (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) is reported. This mitogenome (GenBank accession no. OL675411) is 16,600 bp in size and consists of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA). Most PCGs use typical mitochondrial stop codon (TAR) except for cox3, which uses a single T residue. The A, G, T, and C nucleotide base composition of the mitogenome is 40.61%, 7.66%, 40.34%, and 11.39%, respectively. The phylogenetic analyses recovered the monophyly of Aleocharinae.

The genus Batriscenellus Jeannel, 1958 (type species: Batrisus fragilis Sharp) includes 35 species and is known from South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, and India. Three species, B. vicarius, B. auritus, and B. orientalis have been documented from the Korean Peninsula. One additional species, Batriscenellus koreanus sp. nov., is described as new. Redescriptions of the Korean species, a species key, illustration of habitus, and diagnostic characters are provided.

The family Ptiliidae is one of the smallest and little-known beetle groups, with only two known species, Dipentium japonicum (Sawada, 1965) and Acrotrichis lewisi (Matthews, 1884), from the Korean peninsula. During the recent study of soil insects from central part of Korea, Baeocrara variolosa (Mulsant and Rey, 1861), belonging to Ptiliidae, were recorded for the first time from Korea, based on the four specimens. In this study, illustrations of a habitus, diagnostic characteristics, and an annotated world catalog of the genus Baeocrara are provided.

We previously demonstrated that a marine bacterial pathogen Vibrio vulnificus isolated from sea foods modulated gene expression levels and defense responses of a land plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Although the interaction between V. vulnificus and A. thaliana was verified under artificial and greenhouse conditions, the simultaneous changes in host and pathogen transcriptomes remained obscure. In this study, we simultaneously analyzed the transcriptome of V. vulnificus MO6-24/O and A. thaliana by dual RNA-sequencing analysis. Disease symptoms appeared at 5 and 7 days post-inoculation in vitro and post-infiltration in planta, respectively. A total of 31, 128, 303, 219, and 130 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in V. vulnificus MO6-24/O at 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h post-infiltration. Out of these, 14 genes involved in the virulence and pathogenicity of V. vulnificus MO6 were characterized. These genes were clustered into six categories, including adherence, antiphagocytosis, chemotaxis and motility, iron uptake, toxin and secretion system. In plant side, the bacterium DEGs potentially played a pivotal role in activating pattern recognition receptors (PRRs)-mediated defense responses. A. thaliana genes related to PRRs, reactive oxygen species burst, mitogen-activated protein kinase cascade induction, salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene, abscisic acid, auxin, gibberellin, and cytokinin were highly induced by V. vulnificus MO6-24/O challenge. Taken together, our results indicate that the sophisticated communication between a marine bacterial pathogen V. vulnificus and A. thaliana occurs. It is the first report demonstration that V. vulnificus actively modulates its virulence factors and potential host immune regulator in a land plant species.

PCL nanofibrous scaffolds are widely used as bone scaffolds, and they can increase the efficiency of bone regeneration by loading drugs and/or growth factors onto them. However, to obtain a more effective bone regeneration effect, it is necessary to increase drug loading and release efficiency. In this study, conductive hydrogel forming nanofibrous scaffolds were prepared to increase drug efficiency. GO has an excellent conductivity and biocompatibility, making it an efficient conductive polymer for bone differentiation. Electrospun PCL was immersed in a mixed solution of GO and PVP and then crosslinked using gamma-ray irradiation. It was confirmed that GO/PVP-PCL was successfully prepared through its characterization (morphology, thermal, chemical, electrical, and biological properties). In addition, drug-release efficiency was confirmed by electrical stimulation after loading the sample with BMP-2, a bone-regeneration growth factor. Compared to PCL, it was confirmed that GO/PVP-PCL has an approximately 20% improved drug-release efficiency and an excellent mineralization of the scaffolds using SBF. After culturing MG63 cells on GO/PVP-PCL, a high effect on osteodifferentiation was confirmed by ALP activity. Therefore, GO/PVP-PCL prepared by a gamma-ray-induced crosslinking reaction is expected to be used as biomaterial for bone-tissue engineering.

19. Optimization of the Physical Properties of HDPE/PU Blends through Improved Compatibility and Electron Beam Crosslinking

Polymer blending is a method in which polymers with different properties are mixed so that each advantage appears in one polymer blend. Improved thermal and mechanical properties of blends can be prepared by blending with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) of a non-polar polymer and polyurethane (PU) of a polar polymer. However, a compatibilizer is required because it has the disadvantage that blending has low miscibility due to the different phases. In this study, HDPE/PU blends with new and excellent physical properties were developed through optimal composition with improved compatibility between the HDPE and PU. In addition, the effects of improving the physical properties through electron-beam crosslinking were confirmed. In general, a crosslinking structure of HDPE is formed by electron beam irradiation to increase its thermal stability and strength, but its elongation is rapidly decreased. In particular, the elongation of HDPE irradiated at 100 kGy was about 110%, which was decreased about five times compared to unirradiated HDPE (510%). However, the HDPE/PU blend with improved compatibility (PU 30) showed an elongation of about 450% while maintaining excellent strength (22.5 MPa), which was increased by about four times compared to the HDPE irradiated at 100 kGy. In particular, the thermal stability of PU 30 irradiated at 100 kGy at a high temperature (180 °C) was improved more than six times compared to the HDPE. Therefore, it is possible to develop HDPE/PU blends with new and excellent physical properties by improving compatibility and using electron beam crosslinking technology.

20. Revision of the Australian genus Logasa Chandler (Staphylinidae, Pselaphinae, Faronitae) with description of three new species

The Australian genus Logasa Chandler, 2001 (type species: L. novaeanglia Chandler) is comprised of six species, three of which are described as new: Logasa newtoni sp. nov., Logasa thayerae sp. nov., and Logasa comforti sp. nov. Examination of the types of L. tricolor (Oke) and L. ventralis (Oke) revealed that they do not share some of the diagnostic characters used here to characterize the type, and other species of the genus, but they are retained in Logasa until the group is revised. A key to species, illustrations of their habitus, and diagnostic characters are provided.

In 2017, two new tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) isolates were collected from greenhouses in Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. Full-length cDNAs of the new ToMV isolates were cloned into dual cauliflower mosaic virus 35S and T7 promoter-driven vectors, sequenced and their pathogenicities investigated. The nucleotide sequences of isolates GW1 (MH507165) and GW2 (MH507166) were 99% identical, resulting in only two amino acid differences in nonconserved region II and the helicase domain, Ile668Thr and Val834Ile. The two isolates were most closely related to a ToMV isolate from Taiwan (KJ207374). Isolate GW1 (Ile668, Val834) induced a systemic hypersensitive response in Nicotiana benthamiana compared with the isolate GW2, which a single residue substitution showed was due to Val834.

23. Radiologic outcomes of open reduction and internal fixation for cementless stems in Vancouver B2 periprosthetic fractures

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiologic outcomes of open reduction and lateral plating with wiring in the treatment of Vancouver B2 periprosthetic femoral fractures. Methods: We retrospectively recruited 37 patients treated with ORIF with lateral plating and wiring for Vancouver B2 fractures. The 27 patients (15 men and 12 women; mean age: 70.8 ± 8.3 years) without follow-up loss had achieved complete bony union without notable complications. The average union period was checked after operation with radiologic findings. Radiologic outcomes were evaluated by ipsilateral limb length discrepancy (LLD) and subsidence between immediate postoperative length and length at postoperative 1 year after adjusting for magnification differences. The average distance to which the retained stem sunk down was investigated between immediate postoperative radiographs and final radiographs showing union. Results: Ten patients could not be evaluated, because of mortality or failure to follow up. The average time to union was 18.3 weeks, and the average distance of stem sinking was 2.5 ± 1.7 mm (range: 0–7.2 mm), which was significantly different between immediate postoperative radiographs and final radiographs. There was no case with loss of reduction or loss of fixation, requiring revision surgery. Conclusion: Open reduction and lateral plating with wiring as a treatment for Vancouver B2 periprosthetic femoral fractures produced good radiologic outcomes with successful bony union. ORIF can be considered the alternative option for treating patients with Vancouver B2 PPF, instead of stem revision surgery. Level of evidence: Level IV, Therapeutic study. The cosmopolitan euaesthetine genus, Edaphus Motschulsky, 1857, with about 90 Palaearctic species, was formerly known by a single species, E. koreanus Puthz, 2011, of which 2 specimens were collected in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. In this paper, the knowledge of the Korean Edaphus fauna is expanded to include six species, including four described here based on a rich material collected in recent years. A key to all six species of Korean Edaphus, illustration of the habitus and diagnostic characters, and a distribution map are provided.

25. Subtrochanteric Insufficiency Fracture Occurring 5 Years after Surgery at the Steinmann Pin Insertion Site for Fracture Reduction

Background and Objectives: Steinmann pins are commonly used in orthopedics, with a low rate of complications. However, thermal osteonecrosis may occur when a pin is inserted using a drill. There have been no reports on late-onset fractures at the Steinmann pin insertion site. Materials and Methods: A 32-year-old man who underwent surgery for a femoral shaft fracture 5 years ago complained of proximal thigh pain 1 month after the removal of the internal device. On physical examination, the patient showed a limping gait due to pain, and tenderness was observed on the lateral aspect of the proximal thigh. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed because the symptoms did not improve, despite conservative treatment. A new fracture line was observed in the lateral cortical bone of the proximal femur. It was found that a fracture occurred at the site where the Steinmann pin was inserted for a closed reduction at the time of the first operation. The patient was instructed to limit weight bearing and to use crutches while walking. Parathyroid hormone was additionally administered to promote bone formation. Results: Six months after diagnosis, a complete union was achieved at the subtrochanteric fracture site, and the patient’s pain subsided. Conclusions: A fracture that occurs as a late onset at the provisional Steinmann pin insertion site is an extremely rare complication; however, orthopedic surgeons must consider this possibility and make more efforts to lower the occurrence of thermal damage. In addition, if the patient complains of pain in the region where the pin was inserted after surgery, surgeons should spare no effort to determine whether a new fracture has occurred.

26. In Vivo Evaluation of Gamma-Irradiated and Heparin-Immobilized Small-Diameter Polycaprolactone Vascular Grafts with VEGF in Aged Rats

The effectiveness of small-diameter vascular grafts depends on their antithrombogenic properties and ability to undergo accelerated endothelialization. The extreme hydrophobic nature of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) hinders vascular tissue integration, limiting its use in medical implants. To enhance the antithrombogenicity of PCL as a biomaterial, we grafted 2-aminoethyl methacrylate (AEMA) hydrochloride onto the PCL surface using gamma irradiation; developed a biodegradable heparin-immobilized PCL nanofibrous scaffold using gamma irradiation and N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethyl carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide reaction chemistry; and incorporated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) into the scaffold to promote vascular endothelial cell proliferation and prevent thrombosis on the vascular grafts. We assessed the physicochemical properties of PCL, heparin-AEMA-PCL (H-PCL), and VEGF-loaded heparin-AEMA-PCL (VH-PCL) vascular grafts using scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, toluidine blue O staining, and fibrinogen adsorption and surface wettability measurement. In addition, we implanted the vascular grafts into 24-month-old Sprague Dawley rats and evaluated them for 3 months. The H-PCL and VH-PCL vascular grafts improved the recovery of blood vessel function by promoting the proliferation of endothelial cells and preventing thrombosis in clinical and histological evaluation, indicating their potential to serve as functional vascular grafts in vascular tissue engineering.

27. Developmental biology and potential use of Alboglossiphonia lata (Annelida: Hirudinea) as an 'Evo-Devo' model organism

Abstract Background The need for the adaptation of species of annelids as “Evo-Devo” model organisms of the superphylum Lophotrochozoa to refine the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships between bilaterian organisms, has promoted an increase in the studies dealing with embryonic development among related species such as leeches from the Glossiphoniidae family. The present study aims to describe the embryogenesis of Alboglossiphonia lata (Oka, 1910), a freshwater glossiphoniid leech, chiefly distributed in East Asia, and validate standard molecular biology techniques to support the use of this species as an additional model for “Evo-Devo” studies. Results A. lata undergoes direct development, and follows the highly conserved clitellate annelid mode of spiral cleavage development; the duration from the egg laying to the juvenile stage is ~7.5 days, and it is iteroparous, indicating that it feeds and deposits eggs again after the first round of brooding, as described in several other glossiphoniid leech species studied to date. The embryos hatch only after complete organ development and proboscis retraction, which has not yet been observed in other glossiphoniid genera. The phylogenetic position of A. lata within the Glossiphoniidae family has been confirmed using cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) sequencing. Lineage tracer injections confirmed the fates of the presumptive meso- and ectodermal precursors, and immunostaining showed the formation of the ventral nerve system during later stages of development. Further, the spatiotemporal expression of an EF-hand calcium-binding protein Calsensin ortholog was characterized, which showed a specific pattern in both the ventral and peripheral nervous systems during the later stages. Conclusions Our description of the embryonic development of A. lata under laboratory conditions provides new data for further comparative studies with other leech and lophotrochozoa model organisms. Moreover, it offers a basis for the establishment of this species as a model for future “Evo-Devo” studies.

28. Radiation-Based Crosslinking Technique for Enhanced Thermal and Mechanical Properties of HDPE/EVA/PU Blends

Crosslinking of polyolefin-based polymers can improve their thermal and mechanical properties, which can then be used in various applications. Radiation-induced crosslinking can be done easily and usefully by irradiation without a crosslinking agent. In addition, polymer blending can improve thermal and mechanical properties, and chemical resistance, compared to conventional single polymers. In this study, high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/polyurethane (PU) blends were prepared by radiation crosslinking to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of HDPE. This is because HDPE, a polyolefin-based polymer, has the weaknesses of low thermal resistance and flexibility, even though it has good mechanical strength and machinability. In contrast, EVA has good flexibility and PU has excellent thermal properties and wear resistance. The morphology and mechanical properties (e.g., tensile and flexure strength) were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a universal testing machine (UTM). The gel fraction, thermal shrinkage, and abrasion resistance of samples were confirmed. In particular, after storing at 180 °C for 1 h, the crosslinked HDPE-PU-EVA blends exhibited ~4-times better thermal stability compared to non-crosslinked HDPE. When subjected to a radiation dose of 100 kGy, the strength of HDPE increased, but the elongation sharply decreased (80%). On the other hand, the strength of the HDPE-PU-EVA blends was very similar to that of HDPE, and the elongation was more than 3-times better (320%). Finally, the abrasion resistance of crosslinked HDPE-PU-EVA was ~9-times better than the crosslinked HDPE. Therefore, this technology can be applied to various polymer products requiring high heat resistance and flexibility, such as electric cables and industrial pipes.

We estimated the genome size of a relict longhorn beetle, Callipogon relictus Semenov (Cerambycidae: Prioninae)—the Korean natural monument no. 218 and a Class I endangered species—using a combination of flow cytometry and k-mer analysis. The two independent methods enabled accurate estimation of the genome size in Cerambycidae for the first time. The genome size of C. relictus was 1.8 ± 0.2 Gb, representing one of the largest cerambycid genomes studied to date. An accurate estimation of genome size of a critically endangered longhorned beetle is a major milestone in our understanding and characterization of the C. relictus genome. Ultimately, the findings provide useful insight into insect genomics and genome size evolution, particularly among beetles.

31. Preparation and Characterization of Ionic Conductive Poly(acrylic Acid)-Based Silicone Hydrogels for Smart Drug Delivery System

In this study, we developed a smart drug delivery system that can efficiently deliver the required amounts of drugs using the excellent ion conductivity of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and an electrical stimulus. As a result of its having carboxyl groups, PAA hydrogel can be used in drug delivery patches to release drugs by ionic conductivity. However, PAA hydrogel has low durability and poor mechanical properties. The carboxyl group of PAA was combined with a siloxane group of silicone using electron-beam irradiation to easily form a crosslinked structure. The PAA–silicone hydrogel has excellent mechanical properties. Specifically, the tensile strength increased more than 3.5 times. In addition, we observed its cell compatibility using fluorescence staining and CCK-8 assays and found good cell viability. Finally, it was possible to control the drug delivery rate efficiently using the voltage applied to the ion-conductive hydrogel. As the voltage was increased to 3, 5, and 7 V, the amount of drug released was 53, 88, and 96%, respectively. These excellent properties of the PAA–silicone hydrogel can be used not only for whitening or anti-wrinkling cosmetics but also in medical drug-delivery systems.

Deciphering the sub-compartmental location of a given protein of interest may help explain its physiological function, but it can be challenging to do using optical or biochemical methods. Imaging with electron microscopy (EM) can provide highly resolved mapping of proteins; however, EM requires complex sample preparation and a specialized facility. Here, we use engineered ascorbate peroxidase (APEX)-generated molecular labeling patterns to provide information regarding intracellular microenvironments in living cells. Using APEX labeling of specific proteins, we uncovered subcellular localization at sub-compartmental resolution and successfully elucidated the membrane protein topology of HMOX1 and sub-mitochondrial localization of recently identified mitochondrial proteins. This method can be expanded to confirm sub-mitochondrial localization and membrane topologies of previously identified mitochondrial proteins.

33. Gamma Ray-Induced Polymerization and Cross-Linking for Optimization of PPy/PVP Hydrogel as Biomaterial

Conducting polymer (CP)-based hydrogels exhibit the behaviors of bending or contraction/relaxation due to electrical stimulation. They are similar in some ways to biological organs and have advantages regarding manipulation and miniaturization. Thus, these hydrogels have attracted considerable interest for biomedical applications. In this study, we prepared PPy/PVP hydrogel with different concentrations and content through polymerization and cross-linking induced by gamma-ray irradiation at 25 kGy to optimize the mechanical properties of the resulting PPy/PVP hydrogel. Optimization of the PPy/PVP hydrogel was confirmed by characterization using scanning electron microscopy, gel fraction, swelling ratio, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, we assessed live-cell viability using live/dead assay and CCK-8 assay, and found good cell viability regardless of the concentration and content of Py/pTS. The conductivity of PPy/PVP hydrogel was at least 13 mS/cm. The mechanical properties of PPy/PVP hydrogel are important factors in their application for biomaterials. It was found that 0.15PPy/PVP20 (51.96 ± 6.12 kPa) exhibited better compressive strength than the other samples for use in CP-based hydrogels. Therefore, it was concluded that gamma rays can be used to optimize PPy/PVP hydrogel and that biomedical applications of CP-based hydrogels will be possible.

Polyurethane (PU) is a very popular polymer that is used in a variety of applications due to its good mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. However, PU recycling has received significant attention due to environmental issues. In this study, we developed a recycling method for waste PU that utilizes the radiation grafting technique. Grafting of waste PU was carried out using a radiation technique with polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA). The PE-g-MA-grafted PU/high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite was prepared by melt-blending at various concentrations (0–10 phr) of PE-g-MA-grafted PU. The composites were characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and their surface morphology and thermal/mechanical properties are reported. For 1 phr PU, the PU could be easily introduced to the HDPE during the melt processing in the blender after the radiation-induced grafting of PU with PE-g-MA. PE-g-MA was easily reacted with PU according to the increasing radiation dose and was located at the interface between the PU and the HDPE during the melt processing in the blender, which improved the interfacial interactions and the mechanical properties of the resultant composites. However, the elongation at break for a PU content >2 phr was drastically decreased.

(type species: Sagola spinifer Broun); P. sungmini Park & Carlton, sp. n.; P. kwangguki Park & Carlton, sp. n.; P. youngboki Park & Carlton, sp. n.; P. seiwoongi Park & Carlton, sp. n.; P. parkeri Park & Carlton, sp. n.; P. hlavaci Park & Carlton, sp. n.; P. nomurai Park & Carlton, sp. n. Three species, S. spinifer Broun, S. colorata Broun, and S. puncticollis Broun, are transferred to the genus Pseudoexeirarthra. Six species are synonymized: S. dilucida Broun, S. guinnessi Broun, S. longicollis Broun, S. longula Broun, and S. rectipennis Broun under P. spinifer (Broun); S. insueta Broun under S. colorata (Broun). A lectotype is designated for P. spinifer (Broun). A key, habitus photographs, line drawings of diagnostic characters, and distribution maps are provided for each species.

A mucoadhesive drug delivery system can improve the effectiveness of a drug by maintaining the drug concentration and allowing targeting and localization of the drug at a specific site. Acrylic-based hydrogels have been used extensively as a mucoadhesive system owing to their flexibility and excellent bioadhesion. In this experiment, poly(acrylic acid) was selected to prepare the bioadhesive hydrogel adhering to mucosal surfaces using a radiation process. Poly(acrylic acid) was dissolved in water to a prepare poly(acrylic acid) solution, and the solution was then irradiated by an electron beam at up to 75 kGy to make hydrogels. Their physical properties, such as gel percent, swelling percent and adhesive strength to mucosal surfaces, were investigated. Triamcinolone acetonide was used as a model drug. The dried poly(acrylic acid) film was dipped in a 0.1 wt% triamcinolone acetonide solution in ethanol, and then dried at 25 °C. The release of triamcinolone acetonide was determined at different time intervals, and UV (Ultraviolet)-Vis spectroscopy was used to determine the released concentration of triamcinolone acetonide at 238 nm. It was shown that poly(acrylic acid)-based drug carriers were successfully prepared for use in a bioadhesive drug delivery system.

37. Characterization and Antimicrobial Property of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Nanogel Containing Silver Particle Prepared by Electron Beam

In this study, we developed a one step process to synthesize nanogel containing silver nanoparticles involving electron beam irradiation. Water-soluble silver nitrate powder is dissolved in the distilled water and then poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) and hexane are put into this silver nitrate solution. These samples are irradiated by an electron beam to make the PAAc nanogels containing silver nanoparticles (Ag/PAAc nanogels). The nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). In addition, the particle size and zeta-potential were confirmed by a particle size analyzer (PSA). The antibacterial properties of the nanogels were evaluated by paper diffusion test. The Ag/PAAc nanogels had an antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The nanogels also demonstrated a good healing effect against diabetic ulcer. The size of the Ag/PAAc nanogels decreased with increasing irradiation doses, and the absolute value of the zeta potential increased with increasing irradiation doses. Also, the Ag/PAAc nanogels exhibited good antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In in vivo wound healing, the Ag/PAAc nanogels have a good healing effect.

(Baryodma) intricata Mannerheim, newly transferred to the subgenus Xenochara. Aleochara (X.) asiatica Kraatz and A. (X.) peninsulae Bernhauer are reported for the first time in the Korean peninsula. 39. Preparation and Characterization of Resorbable Bacterial Cellulose Membranes Treated by Electron Beam Irradiation for Guided Bone Regeneration

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an excellent biomaterial with many medical applications. In this study, resorbable BC membranes were prepared for guided bone regeneration (GBR) using an irradiation technique for applications in the dental field. Electron beam irradiation (EI) increases biodegradation by severing the glucose bonds of BC. BC membranes irradiated at 100 kGy or 300 kGy were used to determine optimal electron beam doses. Electron beam irradiated BC membranes (EI-BCMs) were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and using wet tensile strength measurements. In addition, in vitro cell studies were conducted in order to confirm the cytocompatibility of EI-BCMs. Cell viabilities of NIH3T3 cells on 100k and 300k EI-BCMs (100 kGy and 300 kGy irradiated BC membranes) were significantly greater than on NI-BCMs after 3 and 7 days (p < 0.05). Bone regeneration by EI-BCMs and their biodegradabilities were also evaluated using in vivo rat calvarial defect models for 4 and 8 weeks. Histometric results showed 100k EI-BCMs exhibited significantly larger new bone area (NBA; %) than 300k EI-BCMs at 8 weeks after implantation (p < 0.05). Mechanical, chemical, and biological analyses showed EI-BCMs effectively interacted with cells and promoted bone regeneration.

40. Chestnut Honey Impregnated Carboxymethyl Cellulose Hydrogel for Diabetic Ulcer Healing

Honey-based wound dressings have attracted a lot of attention from modern scientists owing to their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects without antibiotic resistance. Such dressings also promote moist wound healing, and have been considered natural, abundant, and cheap materials for folk marketing. This study investigated the various behaviors and characteristics of chestnut honey-impregnated carboxymethyl cellulose sodium hydrogel paste (CH–CMC) as a therapeutic dressing, such as its moist retention, antibacterial activity for inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the rate of wound healing in db/db mice. The results provide good evidence, suggesting that CH–CMC has potential as a competitive candidate for diabetic ulcer wound healing.

This study introduces the effect of the thickness of a bacterial cellulose membrane by comparing the bone regeneration effect on rat skulls when using a collagen membrane and different thicknesses of resorbable bacterial cellulose membranes for guided bone regeneration. Barrier membranes of 0.10 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.20 mm in thickness were made using bacterial cellulose produced as microbial fermentation metabolites. Mechanical strength was investigated, and new bone formation was evaluated through animal experimental studies. Experimental animals were sacrificed after having 2 weeks and 8 weeks of recovery, and specimens were processed for histologic and histomorphometric analyses measuring the area of bone regeneration (%) using an image analysis program. In 2 weeks, bone-like materials and fibrous connective tissues were observed in histologic analysis. In 8 weeks, all experimental groups showed the arrangement of osteoblasts surrounding the supporting body on the margin and center of the bone defect region. However, the amount of new bone formation was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in bacterial cellulose membrane with 0.10 mm in thickness compared to the other experimental groups. Within the limitations of this study, a bacterial cellulose membrane with 0.10 mm thickness induced the most effective bone regeneration.

Polyurethane (PU) is the fifth most common polymer in the general consumer market, following Polypropylene (PP), Polyethylene (PE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and Polystyrene (PS), and the most common polymer for thermosetting resins. In particular, polyurethane has excellent hardness and heat resistance, is a widely used material for electronic products and automotive parts, and can be used to create products of various physical properties, including rigid and flexible foams, films, and fibers. However, the use of polar polymer polyurethane as an impact modifier of non-polar polymers is limited due to poor combustion resistance and impact resistance. In this study, we used gamma irradiation at 25 and 50 kGy to introduce the styrene of hydrophobic monomer on the polyurethane as an impact modifier of the non-polar polymer. To verify grafted styrene, we confirmed the phenyl group of styrene at 690 cm−1 by Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and at 6.4–6.8 ppm by 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR). Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and contact angle analysis were also used to confirm styrene introduction. This study has confirmed the possibility of applying high-functional composite through radiation-based techniques.

The recycling of waste polyurethane (PU) using radiation-induced grafting was investigated. The grafting of waste PU onto a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix was carried out using a radiation technique with maleic anhydride (MAH). HDPE pellets and PU powders were immersed in a MAH-acetone solution. Finally, the prepared mixtures were irradiated with an electron beam accelerator. The grafted composites were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), surface morphology, and mechanical properties. To make a good composite, the improvement in compatibility between HDPE and PU is an important factor. Radiation-induced grafting increased interfacial adhesion between the PU domain and the HDPE matrix. When the absorbed dose was 75 kGy, the surface morphology of the irradiated PU/HDPE composite was nearly a smooth and single phase, and the elongation at break increased by approximately three times compared with that of non-irradiated PU/HDPE composite.

49. Treatment of Osteoporosis after Hip Fracture: Survey of the Korean Hip Society.

- Abstract
Purpose: To assess current practice in the treatment of osteoporosis in patients who underwent treatment for hip fracture in South Korea. Materials and Methods: A survey of 97 members of the Korean Hip Society, orthopedic hip surgeons who administer treatment for hip fractures in South Korea, was conducted. The survey was conducted for assessment of demographic data and perceptions regarding the management of osteoporosis in patients who have undergone treatment for hip fracture. Analysis of the data was performed using descriptive statistical methods. Results: The majority of participants were between the age of 41 and 50 years, and 74% were practicing in tertiary hospitals. Testing for serum vitamin D levels (82%) was the most commonly performed laboratory test. Calcium and vitamin D were prescribed for more than 80% of patients by 47% and 52% of participants, respectively. Denosumab was the most commonly used first-line treatment option for osteoporosis in hip fracture patients. Bisphosphonate was most often perceived as the cause of atypical femoral fractures, and the most appropriate time for reoperation was postoperative 12 months. Teriparatide was most preferred after cessation of bisphosphonate and only prescribing calcium and vitamin D was most common in high-risk patients for prevention of atypical femoral fracture. Conclusion: The results of this study that surveyed orthopedic hip surgeons showed that most participants followed the current strategy for management of osteoporosis. Because the end result of osteoporosis is a bone fracture, active involvement of orthopedic surgeons is important in treating this condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Association with Systemic and Ophthalmic Disease in Korean Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome Patients

Purpose: To analyze the association of systemic and ophthalmic disease in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 207 patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and 201 age-matched controls without pseudoexfoliation syndrome seen from January 2016 to January 2021. Age, sex, systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, and ocular disease including retinal vascular occlusion, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataract surgery rate, complications related to cataract surgery, and ocular characteristics were compared. Factors associated with pseudoexfoliation syndrome were analyzed using logistic regression.Results: The frequencies of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, AMD, glaucoma, a history of cataract surgery, and complications related to cataract surgery were significantly higher in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (all Ps ≤ 0.049). The pseudoexfoliation syndrome group had a significantly thinner global retinal nerve fiber layer, worse mean deviation and pattern standard deviation, and smaller dilated pupil size than the controls (all Ps < 0.001). In univariate and multivariate logistic regressions, the presence of diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [OR] = 1.613, p = 0.041), AMD (OR = 3.071, p = 0.001), and glaucoma (OR = 17.800, p < 0.001) were associated with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.Conclusions: Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, AMD, and glaucoma were more frequent in pseudoexfoliation syndrome patients. Since pseudoexfoliation syndrome is closely related to AMD and glaucoma, this requires clinical consideration.
