We present a dynamical study of the intermediate polar cataclysmic variable YY Dra based on time-series observations in the $K$ band, where the donor star is known to be the major flux contributor. We covered the $3.97$-h orbital cycle with 44 spectra taken between $2020$ and $2022$ and two epochs of photometry observed in 2021 March and May. One of the light curves was simultaneously obtained with spectroscopy to better account for the effects of irradiation of the donor star and the presence of accretion light. From the spectroscopy, we derived the radial velocity curve of the donor star metallic absorption lines, constrained its spectral type to M0.5$-$M3.5 with no measurable changes in the effective temperature between the irradiated and non-irradiated hemispheres of the star, and measured its projected rotational velocity $v_\mathrm{rot} \sin i = 103 \pm 2 \, \mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. Through simultaneous modelling of the radial velocity and light curves, we derived values for the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor star, $K_2 = 188^{+1}_{-2} \, \mathrm{km} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$, the donor to white dwarf mass ratio, $q=M_2/M_1 = 0.62 \pm 0.02$, and the orbital inclination, $i={42^{\circ}}^{+2^{\circ}}_{-1^{\circ}}$. These binary parameters yield dynamical masses of $M_{1} = 0.99^{+0.10}_{-0.09} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and $M_2 = 0.62^{+0.07}_{-0.06} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ ($68$ per cent confidence level). Fast X-ray transients (FXTs) are X-ray flares lasting minutes to hours. Multi-wavelength counterparts to these FXTs have been proven hard to find. As a result distance measurements are through indirect methods such as host galaxy identification. The three main models proposed for FXTs; supernova shock breakout emission (SN SBO), binary neutron star (BNS) mergers and tidal dirsuption events (TDEs) of an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) disrupting a white dwarf (WD), have a different associated L$_{X, peak}$. Therefore obtaining the distance to FXTs will be a powerful probe to investigate the nature of these FXTs. We use VLT/MUSE observations of a sample of FXTs to report the redshift of between 13 and 22 galaxies per FXT and use these redshifts to calculate the distance, L$_{X, peak}$ and the projected offsets. We find L$_{X, peak}>10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ if we assume any of the sources with a redshift measurement is the true host galaxy of the corresponding FXT. For XRT 100831 we find a very faint galaxy within the 1$\sigma$ uncertainty region with a chance alignment probability of 0.04. For XRT 060207 we find a candidate host galaxy at z = 0.939 with a low chance alignment probability. However, we also report the detection of a late-type star within the 3$\sigma$ uncertainty region with a similar chance alignment probability. For the remaining FXTs we find no sources within their 3$\sigma$ uncertainty regions. We rule out a SN SBO nature for all FXTs based on L$_{X, peak}$ and the projected offsets. For XRT 100831 we conclude the detected galaxy within the 1$\sigma$ uncertainty position is likely to be the host galaxy of this FXT. From the available information, we are not able to determine if XRT 060207 originated from the galaxy found within 1$\sigma$ of the FXT position or was due to a flare from the late-type star detected within the 3$\sigma$ uncertainty region., Comment: 32 pages (of which 20 appendix), 9 figures, 3 tables. Extragalactic fast X-ray transients (FXTs) are short-duration ($\sim$ ks) X-ray flashes of unknown origin, potentially arising from binary neutron star mergers. We investigate the possible link between FXTs and the afterglows of off-axis merger-induced gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). By modelling the broadband afterglows of 13 GRBs, we make predictions for their X-ray light curve behaviour had they been observed off-axis, considering both a uniform jet with core angle $\theta_{C}$ and a Gaussian-structured jet with truncation angle $\theta_{W} = 2\theta_{C}$. We compare their peak X-ray luminosity, duration, and temporal indices with those of the currently known extragalactic FXTs. Our analysis reveals that a slightly off-axis observing angle of $\theta_{\text{obs}}\approx (2.2-3)\theta_{C}$ and a structured jet are required to explain the shallow temporal indices of the FXT light curves. In the case of a structured jet, the durations of the FXTs are consistent with those of the off-axis afterglows for the same range of observing angles, $\theta_{\text{obs}}\approx (2.2-3)\theta_{C}$. While the off-axis peak X-ray luminosities are consistent only for $\theta_{\text{obs}} = 2.2\theta_{C}$, focussing on individual events reveals that the match of all three properties of the FXTs at the same viewing angle is possible in the range $\theta_{\text{obs}} \sim (2.2-2.6)\theta_{C}$. Despite the small sample of GRBs analysed, these results show that there is a region of the parameter space - although quite limited - where the observational properties of off-axis GRB afterglows can be consistent with those of the newly discovered FXTs. Future observations of FXTs discovered by the recently launched Einstein Probe mission and GRB population studies combined with more complex afterglow models will shed light on this possible GRB-FXT connection, and eventually unveil the progenitors of some FXTs., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures. Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs) are a class of extragalactic transients notable for their rapid rise and fade times, blue colour and accompanying luminous X-ray and radio emission. Only a handful have been studied in detail since the prototypical example AT2018cow. Their origins are currently unknown, but ongoing observations of previous and new events are placing ever stronger constraints on their progenitors. We aim to put further constraints on the LFBOT AT2023fhn, and LFBOTs as a class, using information from the multi-wavelength transient light-curve, its host galaxy and local environment. Our primary results are obtained by fitting galaxy models to the spectral energy distribution of AT2023fhn's host and local environment, and by modelling the radio light-curve of AT2023fhn as due to synchrotron self-absorbed emission from an expanding blast-wave in the circumstellar medium. We find that the neither the host galaxy nor circumstellar environment of AT2023fhn are unusual compared with previous LFBOTs, but that AT2023fhn has a much lower X-ray to ultraviolet luminosity ratio than previous events. We argue that the variety in ultraviolet-optical to X-ray luminosity ratios among LFBOTs is likely due to viewing angle differences, and that the diffuse, yet young local environment of AT2023fhn - combined with a similar circumstellar medium to previous events - favours a progenitor system containing a massive star with strong winds. The main science aim of the BlackGEM array is to detect optical counterparts to gravitational wave mergers. Additionally, the array will perform a set of synoptic surveys to detect Local Universe transients and short time-scale variability in stars and binaries, as well as a six-filter all-sky survey down to ~22nd mag. The BlackGEM Phase-I array consists of three optical wide-field unit telescopes. Each unit uses an f/5.5 modified Dall-Kirkham (Harmer-Wynne) design with a triplet corrector lens, and a 65cm primary mirror, coupled with a 110Mpix CCD detector, that provides an instantaneous field-of-view of 2.7~square degrees, sampled at 0.564\arcsec/pixel. The total field-of-view for the array is 8.2 square degrees. Each telescope is equipped with a six-slot filter wheel containing an optimised Sloan set (BG-u, BG-g, BG-r, BG-i, BG-z) and a wider-band 440-720 nm (BG-q) filter. Each unit telescope is independent from the others. Cloud-based data processing is done in real time, and includes a transient-detection routine as well as a full-source optimal-photometry module. BlackGEM has been installed at the ESO La Silla observatory as of October 2019. After a prolonged COVID-19 hiatus, science operations started on April 1, 2023 and will run for five years. Aside from its core scientific program, BlackGEM will give rise to a multitude of additional science cases in multi-colour time-domain astronomy, to the benefit of a variety of topics in astrophysics, such as infant supernovae, luminous red novae, asteroseismology of post-main-sequence objects, (ultracompact) binary stars, and the relation between gravitational wave counterparts and other classes of transients, Comment: 14 pages, submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

A tidal disruption event (TDE) may occur when a star is torn apart by the tidal force of a black hole (BH). Eventually, an accretion disc is thought to form out of stellar debris falling back towards the BH. If the star's orbital angular momentum vector prior to disruption is not aligned with the BH spin angular momentum vector, the disc will be tilted with respect to the BH equatorial plane. The disc will eventually be drawn into the BH equatorial plane due to a combination of the Bardeen-Petterson effect and internal torques. Here, we analyse the X-ray and UV observations of the TDE AT2020ocn obtained by Swift, XMM-Newton, and NICER. The X-ray light curve shows strong flares during the first $\approx100$ days, while, over the same period, the UV emission decays gradually. We find that the X-ray flares can be explained by a model that also explains the spectral evolution. This model includes a slim disc viewed under a variable inclination plus an inverse-Comptonisation component processing the slim disc emission. A scenario where the ongoing Lense-Thirring precession during the disc alignment process is responsible for the observed inclination variations is consistent with the data. In later observations, we find that the X-ray spectrum of AT2020ocn becomes harder, while the mass accretion rate remains at super-Eddington levels, suggesting the formation of a corona in line with accretion onto other compact objects. We present the results of a high angular resolution (1.1") and sensitivity (maximum of ~0.1 mJy) radio survey at 1-2 GHz in the Galactic Bulge. This complements the X-ray Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey, and investigates the full radio source population in this dense Galactic region. Radio counterparts to sources at other wavelengths can aid in classification, as there are relatively few types of objects that are reasonably detectable in radio at kiloparsec distances, and even fewer that are detected in both X-rays and radio. This survey covers about 3 square degrees of the Galactic Bulge Survey area (spanning the Galactic coordinate range of -3deg < l < +3deg and +1.6deg < b < +2.1deg as a first look into this region of the Galaxy with this combination of frequency, resolution, and sensitivity. Spectral indices within the observed band of 1-2 GHz were calculated for each source to assist in determining its emission mechanism. We find 1617 unique sources in the survey, 25 of which are radio counterparts to X-ray sources, and about 100 of which are steep-spectrum (alpha <~ -1.4) point sources that are viable pulsar candidates. Four radio sources are of particular interest: a compact binary; an infrared transient with an inverted radio spectrum; a potential transitional millisecond pulsar candidate; and a very steep spectrum radio source with an X-ray and bright infrared counterpart. The tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2018fyk has unusual X-ray, UV, and optical light curves that decay over the first $\sim$600d, rebrighten, and decay again around 1200d. We explain this behavior as a one-off TDE associated with a massive black hole (BH) \emph{binary}. The sharp drop-offs from $t^{-5/3}$ power laws at around 600d naturally arise when one BH interrupts the debris fallback onto the other BH. The BH mass $M_\bullet$ derived from fitting X-ray spectra with a slim disk accretion model and, independently, from fitting the early UV/optical light curves, is smaller by two orders of magnitude than predicted from the $M_\bullet$--$\sigma_*$ host galaxy relation, suggesting that the debris is accreted onto the secondary, with fallback cut off by the primary. Furthermore, if the rebrightening were associated with the primary, it should occur around 5000d, not the observed 1200d. The secondary's mass and dimensionless spin is $M_{\bullet,{\rm s}}=2.7^{+0.5}_{-1.5} \times 10^5 M_\odot$ and $a_{\bullet,{\rm s}}>0.3$ (X-ray spectral fitting), while the primary's mass is $M_{\bullet,{\rm p}}=10^{7.7\pm0.4}M_\odot$ ($M_\bullet$-$\sigma_*$ relation). An intermediate mass BH secondary is consistent with the observed UV/optical light curve decay, i.e., the secondary's outer accretion disk is too faint to produce a detectable emission floor. The time of the first accretion cutoff constrains the binary separation to be $(6.7\pm 1.2) \times 10^{-3}~{\rm pc}$. X-ray spectral fitting and timing analysis indicate that the hard X-rays arise from a corona above the secondary's disk. The early UV/optical emission, suggesting a super-Eddington phase for the secondary, possibly originates from shocks arising from debris circularization., Comment: 5 tables, 7 figures. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

The nature of the minute-to-hour long Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) localised by telescopes such as Chandra, Swift, and XMM-Newton remains mysterious, with numerous models suggested for the events. Here, we report multi-wavelength observations of EP240315a, a 1600 s long transient detected by the Einstein Probe, showing it to have a redshift of z=4.859. We measure a low column density of neutral hydrogen, indicating that the event is embedded in a low-density environment, further supported by direct detection of leaking ionising Lyman-continuum. The observed properties are consistent with EP240315a being a long-duration gamma-ray burst, and these observations support an interpretation in which a significant fraction of the FXT population are lower-luminosity examples of similar events. Such transients are detectable at high redshifts by the Einstein Probe and, in the (near) future, out to even larger distances by SVOM, THESEUS, and Athena, providing samples of events into the epoch of reionisation., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures, submitted

Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) are extragalactic bursts of soft X-rays first identified >10 years ago. Since then, nearly 40 events have been discovered, although almost all of these have been recovered from archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. To date, optical sky surveys and follow-up searches have not revealed any multi-wavelength counterparts. The Einstein Probe, launched in January 2024, has started surveying the sky in the soft X-ray regime (0.5-4 keV) and will rapidly increase the sample of FXTs discovered in real time. Here, we report the first discovery of both an optical and radio counterpart to a distant FXT, the fourth source publicly released by the Einstein Probe. We discovered a fast-fading optical transient within the 3 arcmin localisation radius of EP240315a with the all-sky optical survey ATLAS, and our follow-up Gemini spectrum provides a redshift, z=4.859+/-0.002. Furthermore, we uncovered a radio counterpart in the S-band (3.0 GHz) with the MeerKAT radio interferometer. The optical (rest-frame UV) and radio luminosities indicate the FXT most likely originates from either a long gamma-ray burst or a relativistic tidal disruption event. Classical gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have two distinct emission episodes: prompt emission from ultra-relativistic ejecta and afterglow from shocked circumstellar material. While both components are extremely luminous in known GRBs, a variety of scenarios predict the existence of luminous afterglow emission with little or no associated high-energy prompt emission. We present AT 2019pim, the first secure example of this phenomenon to be identified. Serendipitously discovered during follow-up observations of a gravitational-wave trigger and located in a contemporaneous TESS sector, it is hallmarked by a fast-rising (t ~ 2 hr), luminous (M_UV,peak ~ -24.4 mag) optical transient with accompanying luminous X-ray and radio emission. No gamma-ray emission consistent with the time and location of the transient was detected by Fermi-GBM or by Konus, placing strong limits on an accompanying GRB. We investigate several independent observational aspects of the afterglow in the context of constraints on relativistic motion and find all of them are consistent with an initial Lorentz factor of Gamma_0 ~ 30-50, significantly lower than in any well-observed GRB and consistent with the theoretically-predicted "dirty fireball" scenario in which the high-energy prompt emission is stifled by pair production. However, we cannot rule out a structured jet model in which only the line-of-sight material was ejected at low-Gamma, off-axis from a classical high-Gamma jet core. This event represents a milestone in orphan afterglow searches, demonstrating that luminous afterglows with weak or no detectable gamma-ray radiation exist in nature and can be discovered by high-cadence optical surveys., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Twenty-two extragalactic fast X-ray transients (FXTs) have now been discovered from two decades of Chandra data (analyzing ~259 Ms of data), with 17 associated with distant galaxies (>100 Mpc). Different mechanisms and progenitors have been proposed to explain their properties; nevertheless, after analyzing their timing, spectral parameters, host-galaxy properties, luminosity function, and volumetric rates, their nature remains uncertain. We interpret a sub-sample of nine FXTs that show a plateau or a fast-rise light curve within the framework of a binary neutron star (BNS) merger magnetar model. We fit their light curves and derive magnetar (magnetic field and initial rotational period) and ejecta (ejecta mass and opacity) parameters. This model predicts two zones: an orientation-dependent free zone (where the magnetar spin-down X-ray photons escape freely to the observer) and a trapped zone (where the X-ray photons are initially obscured and only escape freely once the ejecta material becomes optically thin). We argue that six FXTs show properties consistent with the free zone and three FXTs with the trapped zone. This sub-sample of FXTs has a similar distribution of magnetic fields and initial rotation periods to those inferred for short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs), suggesting a possible association. We compare the predicted ejecta emission fed by the magnetar emission (called merger-nova) to the optical and near-infrared upper limits of two FXTs, XRT 141001 and XRT 210423 where contemporaneous optical observations are available. The non-detections place lower limits on the redshifts of XRT 141001 and XRT 210423 of z>1.5 and >0.1, respectively. If the magnetar remnants lose energy via gravitational waves, it should be possible to detect similar objects with the current advanced LIGO detectors out to a redshift z<0.03, while future GW detectors will be able to detect them out to z=0.5., Comment: The paper was accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Extragalactic fast X-ray transients (FXTs) are a class of soft (0.3-10 keV) X-ray transients lasting a few hundred seconds to several hours. Several progenitor mechanisms have been suggested to produce FXTs, including supernova shock breakouts, binary neutron star mergers, or tidal disruptions involving an intermediate-mass black hole and a white dwarf. We present detailed host studies, including spectroscopic observations of the host galaxies of 7 XMM-Newton-discovered FXTs. The candidate hosts lie at redshifts 0.0928 $< z <$ 0.645 implying peak X-ray luminosities of 10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ $< L_X <$ 10$^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$,and physical offsets of 1 kpc < $r_\mathrm{proj}$ < 22 kpc. These observations increase the number of FXTs with a spectroscopic redshift measurement by a factor of 2, although we note that one event is re-identified as a Galactic flare star. We infer host star formation rates and stellar masses by fitting the combined spectroscopic and archival photometric data. We also report on a contemporaneous optical counterpart search to the FXTs in Pan-STARRS and ATLAS by performing forced photometry at the position of the FXTs. We do not find any counterpart in our search. Given our constraints, including peak X-ray luminosities, optical limits, and host properties, we find that XRT 110621 is consistent with a SN SBO event. Spectroscopic redshifts of likely host galaxies for four events imply peak X-ray luminosities that are too high to be consistent with SN SBOs, but we are unable to discard either the BNS or WD-IMBH TDE scenarios for these FXTs., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables. We present VLT spectroscopy, high-resolution imaging and time-resolved photometry of KY TrA, the optical counterpart to the X-ray binary A 1524-61. We perform a refined astrometry of the field, yielding improved coordinates for KY TrA and the field star interloper of similar optical brightness that we locate $0.64 \pm 0.04$ arcsec SE. From the spectroscopy, we refine the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor star to $K_2 = 501 \pm 52$ km s$^{-1}$ by employing the correlation between this parameter and the full-width at half-maximum of the H$\alpha$ emission line. The $r$-band light curve shows an ellipsoidal-like modulation with a likely orbital period of $0.26 \pm 0.01$ d ($6.24 \pm 0.24$ h). These numbers imply a mass function $f(M_1) = 3.2 \pm 1.0$ M$_\odot$. The KY TrA de-reddened quiescent colour $(r-i)_0 = 0.27 \pm 0.08$ is consistent with a donor star of spectral type K2 or later, in case of significant accretion disc light contribution to the optical continuum. The colour allows us to place a very conservative upper limit on the companion star mass, $M_2 \leq 0.94$ M$_\odot$, and, in turn, on the binary mass ratio, $q = M_2/M_1 \leq 0.31$. By exploiting the correlation between the binary inclination and the depth of the H$\alpha$ line trough, we establish $i = 57 \pm 13$ deg. All these values lead to a compact object and donor mass of $M_1 = 5.8^{+3.0}_{-2.4}$ M$_\odot$ and $M_2 = 0.5 \pm 0.3$ M$_\odot$, respectively, thus confirming the black hole nature of the accreting object. We present evidence for a 0.278(8) d (=6.7 h) orbital period in the X-ray transient GRS 1716-249 (=N Oph 93), based on a superhump modulation detected during the 1995 mini-outburst plus ellipsoidal variability in quiescence. With a quiescent magnitude of r=23.19+-0.15 N Oph 93 is too faint to warrant a full dynamical study through dedicated time-resolved spectroscopy. Instead, we apply the FWHM-K2 correlation to the disc Halpha emission line detected in Gran Telescopio Canarias spectra and obtain K2=521+-52 km/s. This leads to a mass function f(M)=4.1+-1.2 Msun, thus indicating the presence of a black hole in this historic X-ray transient. Furthermore, from the depth of the Halpha trough and the quiescent light curve we constrain the binary inclination to i=61+-15 deg, while the detection of superhumps sets an upper limit to the donor to compact star mass ratio q=M2/M1<=0.25. Our de-reddened (r-i) colour is consistent with a ~K6 main sequence star that fills its Roche lobe in a 0.278 d orbit. Using all this information we derive a compact object mass M1=6.4+3.2-2.0 Msun at 68 per cent confidence. We also constrain the distance to GRS 1716-249 to 6.9+-1.1 kpc, placing the binary ~0.8 kpc above the Galactic Plane, in support of a large natal kick., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 12 pages, 9 figures, 2 Tables

The bright, blue, rapidly evolving AT2018cow is a well-studied peculiar extragalactic transient. Despite an abundance of multi-wavelength data, there still is no consensus on the nature of the event. We present our analysis of three epochs of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations spanning the period from 713-1474 days post burst, paying particular attention to uncertainties of the transient photometry introduced by the complex background in which AT2018cow resides. Photometric measurements show evident fading in the UV and more subtle but significant fading in the optical. During the last HST observation, the transient's optical/UV colours were still bluer than those of the substantial population of compact, young, star-forming regions in the host of AT2018cow, suggesting some continued transient contribution to the light. However, a compact source underlying the transient would substantially modify the resulting spectral energy distribution, depending on its contribution in the various bands. In particular, in the optical filters, the complex, diffuse background poses a problem for precise photometry. An underlying cluster is expected for a supernova occurring within a young stellar environment or a tidal-disruption event (TDE) within a dense older one. While many recent works have focused on the supernova interpretation, we note the substantial similarity in UV light-curve morphology between AT2018cow and several tidal disruption events around supermassive black holes. Assuming AT2018cow arises from a TDE-like event, we fit the late-time emission with a disc model and find $M_{BH} = 10^{3.2{\pm}0.8}$ M$_{\odot}$. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occur when a star gets torn apart by a supermassive black hole as it crosses its tidal radius. We present late-time optical and X-ray observations of the nuclear transient AT2019qiz, which showed the typical signs of an optical-UV transient class commonly believed to be TDEs. Optical spectra were obtained 428, 481 and 828 rest-frame days after optical lightcurve peak, and a UV/X-ray observation coincided with the later spectrum. The optical spectra show strong coronal emission lines, including [Fe VII], [Fe X], [Fe XI] and [Fe XIV]. The Fe lines rise and then fall, except [Fe XIV] which appears late and rises. We observe increasing flux of narrow H-alpha and H-beta and a decrease in broad H-alpha flux. The coronal lines have FWHMs ranging from ~150 - 300km/s, suggesting they originate from a region between the broad and narrow line emitting gas. Between the optical flare and late-time observation, the X-ray spectrum softens dramatically. The 0.3-1 keV X-ray flux increases by a factor of ~50 while the hard X-ray flux decreases by a factor of ~6. WISE fluxes also rose over the same period, indicating the presence of an infrared echo. With AT2017gge, AT2019qiz is one of two examples of a spectroscopically-confirmed optical-UV TDE showing delayed coronal line emission, supporting speculations that Extreme Coronal Line Emitters in quiescent galaxies can be echos of unobserved past TDEs. We argue that the coronal lines, narrow lines, and infrared emission arise from the illumination of pre-existing material likely related to either a previous TDE or AGN activity.

The discovery of gravitational wave (GW) events and the detection of electromagnetic counterparts from GW170817 has started the era of multimessenger GW astronomy.The field has been developing rapidly and in this paper,we discuss the preparation for detecting these events with the ESA Gaia satellite,during the 4th observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaboration that has started on May 24,2023. Gaia is contributing to the search for GW counterparts by a new transient detection pipeline called GaiaX. In GaiaX, a new source appearing in the field of view of only one of the two telescopes on-board Gaia is sufficient to send out an alert on the possible detection of a new transient. Ahead of O4, an experiment was conducted over a period of about two months. During the two weeks around New Moon in this period of time, the MeerLICHT (ML) telescope located in South Africa tried (weather permitting) to observe the same region of the sky as Gaia within 10 minutes. Any GaiaX detected transient was published publicly. ML and Gaia have similar limiting magnitudes for typical seeing conditions at ML. At the end of the experiment, we had 11861 GaiaX candidate transients and 15806 ML candidate transients, which we further analysed and the results of which are presented in this paper. Finally, we discuss the possibility and capabilities of Gaia contributing to the search for electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events during O4 through the GaiaX detection and alert procedure., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery and extensive follow-up of a remarkable fast-evolving optical transient, AT2022aedm, detected by the Asteroid Terrestrial impact Last Alert Survey (ATLAS). AT2022aedm exhibited a rise time of $9\pm1$ days in the ATLAS $o$-band, reaching a luminous peak with $M_g\approx-22$ mag. It faded by 2 magnitudes in $g$-band during the next 15 days. These timescales are consistent with other rapidly evolving transients, though the luminosity is extreme. Most surprisingly, the host galaxy is a massive elliptical with negligible current star formation. X-ray and radio observations rule out a relativistic AT2018cow-like explosion. A spectrum in the first few days after explosion showed short-lived He II emission resembling young core-collapse supernovae, but obvious broad supernova features never developed; later spectra showed only a fast-cooling continuum and narrow, blue-shifted absorption lines, possibly arising in a wind with $v\approx2700$ km s$^{-1}$. We identify two further transients in the literature (Dougie in particular, as well as AT2020bot) that share similarities in their luminosities, timescales, colour evolution and largely featureless spectra, and propose that these may constitute a new class of transients: luminous fast-coolers (LFCs). All three events occurred in passive galaxies at offsets of $\sim4-10$ kpc from the nucleus, posing a challenge for progenitor models involving massive stars or massive black holes. The light curves and spectra appear to be consistent with shock breakout emission, though usually this mechanism is associated with core-collapse supernovae. The encounter of a star with a stellar mass black hole may provide a promising alternative explanation., Comment: Accepted in ApJL

Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients (LFBOTs) - the prototypical example being AT2018cow - are a rare class of events whose origins are poorly understood. They are characterised by rapid evolution, featureless blue spectra at early times, and luminous X-ray and radio emission. LFBOTs thus far have been found exclusively at small projected offsets from star-forming host galaxies. We present Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, Chandra and Very Large Array observations of a new LFBOT, AT2023fhn. The Hubble Space Telescope data reveal a large offset (greater than 3.5 half-light radii) from the two closest galaxies, both at a redshift of 0.24. Extragalactic fast X-ray transients (FXTs) are short flashes of X-ray photons of unknown origin that last a few minutes to hours. We extend the search for extragalactic FXTs from Quirola et al. 2022 (Paper I; based on sources in the Chandra Source Catalog 2.0, CSC2) to further Chandra archival data between 2014-2022. We extract X-ray data using a method similar to that employed by CSC2 and apply identical search criteria as in Paper I. We report the detection of eight FXT candidates, with peak 0.3-10 keV fluxes between 1$\times$10$^{-13}$ to 1$\times$10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and $T_{90}$ values from 0.3 to 12.1 ks. This sample of FXTs has likely redshifts between 0.7 to 1.8. Three FXT candidates exhibit light curves with a plateau (${\approx}$1-3 ks duration) followed by a power-law decay and X-ray spectral softening, similar to what was observed for a few previously reported FXTs in Paper I. In light of the new, expanded source lists (eight FXTs with known redshifts from Paper I and this work), we update the event sky rates derived in Paper I, finding 36.9$_{-8.3}^{+9.7}$ deg$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ for the extragalactic samples for a limiting flux of ${\gtrsim}$1${\times}$10$^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, calculate the first FXT X-ray luminosity function, and compare the volumetric density rate between FXTs and other transient classes. We present a dynamical study of the eclipsing intermediate polar XY Ari based on time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the EMIR spectrograph on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. Using main sequence template spectra taken with the same instrument setup as the target spectra, we measure a radial velocity amplitude of the late K-type donor star $K_2=256 \pm 2$ km s$^{-1}$. We also obtain the rotational broadening of its photospheric lines $v_\mathrm{rot} \sin i = 141 \pm 3$ km s$^{-1}$. From these and the eclipse geometry, we derive a donor-to-white-dwarf mass ratio $q = M_2/M_1 = 0.62 \pm 0.02$, an orbital inclination $i = 80.8^{\circ} \pm 0.5^{\circ}$ and dynamical masses $M_{1} = 1.21 \pm 0.04 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and $M_2 = 0.75 \pm 0.04 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ ($1 \sigma$). This result places the white dwarf in XY Ari as one of the three most massive known in a cataclysmic variable. Comparison with white dwarf mass estimates from X-ray spectral studies could indicate the necessity of an improvement of the X-ray models and/or analysis techniques, as a number of X-ray white dwarf masses are in disagreement with the dynamical mass value., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We predict late-time optical/UV emission from tidal disruption events (TDEs) from our slim accretion disc model \citep{Wen20} and explore the impact of the black hole mass $M_\bullet$, black hole spin $a_\bullet$, and accretion disc size. We use these synthetic spectra to successfully fit the multi-band \emph{Swift} observations of ASASSN-14li at >350 days, setting only the host galaxy extinction and outer disc radius as free parameters and employing the $M_\bullet$, $a_\bullet$, disc inclination, and disc accretion rates derived from fitting 10 epochs of ASASSN-14li's X-ray spectra with the slim disc. To address the nature of the \emph{early}-time optical/UV emission, we consider two models: shock dissipation and reprocessing. We find that (1) the predicted late-time optical/UV colour (e.g., $u-w2$) is insensitive to black hole and disc parameters unless the disc spreads quickly; (2) a starburst galaxy extinction model is required to fit the data, consistent with ASASSN-14li's post-starburst host; (3) surprisingly, the outer disc radius is $\approx$2$\times$ the tidal radius and $\sim$constant at late times, showing that viscous spreading is slow or non-existent; (4) the shock model can be self-consistent if $M_\bullet \lesssim 10^{6.75}$M$_\odot$, i.e., on the low end of ASASSN-14li's $M_\bullet$ range ($10^{6.5-7.1}$M$_\odot$; 1$\sigma$ CL); larger black hole masses require disruption of an unrealistically massive progenitor star; (5) the gas mass needed for reprocessing, whether by a quasi-static or an outflowing layer, can be $<0.5$M$_\odot$, consistent with a (plausible) disruption of a solar-mass star., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. The highly variable and energetic pulsed emission of a long gamma-ray burst (GRB) is thought to originate from local, rapid dissipation of kinetic or magnetic energy within an ultra-relativistic jet launched by a newborn compact object, formed during the collapse of a massive star. The spectra of GRB pulses are best modelled by power-law segments, indicating the dominance of non-thermal radiation processes. Spectral lines in the X-ray and soft $\gamma$-ray regime for the afterglow have been searched for intensively, but never confirmed. No line features ever been identified in the high energy prompt emission. Here we report the discovery of a highly significant ($> 6 \sigma$) narrow emission feature at around $10$ MeV in the brightest ever GRB 221009A. By modelling its profile with a Gaussian, we find a roughly constant width $\sigma \sim 1$ MeV and temporal evolution both in energy ($\sim 12$ MeV to $\sim 6$ MeV) and luminosity ($\sim 10^{50}$ erg/s to $\sim 2 \times 10^{49}$ erg/s) over 80 seconds. We interpret this feature as a blue-shifted annihilation line of relatively cold ($k_\mathrm{B}T\ll m_\mathrm{e}c^2$) electron-positron pairs, which could have formed within the jet region where the brightest pulses of the GRB were produced. A detailed understanding of the conditions that can give rise to such a feature could shed light on the so far poorly understood GRB jet properties and energy dissipation mechanism., Comment: Submitted

The majority of long duration ($>2$ s) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to arise from the collapse of massive stars \cite{Hjorth+03}, with a small proportion created from the merger of compact objects. Most of these systems are likely formed via standard stellar evolution pathways. However, it has long been thought that a fraction of GRBs may instead be an outcome of dynamical interactions in dense environments, channels which could also contribute significantly to the samples of compact object mergers detected as gravitational wave sources. Here we report the case of GRB 191019A, a long GRB (T_90 = 64.4 +/- 4.5 s) which we pinpoint close (<100 pc projected) to the nucleus of an ancient (>1~Gyr old) host galaxy at z=0.248. The lack of evidence for star formation and deep limits on any supernova emission make a massive star origin difficult to reconcile with observations, while the timescales of the emission rule out a direct interaction with the supermassive black hole in the nucleus of the galaxy, We suggest that the most likely route for progenitor formation is via dynamical interactions in the dense nucleus of the host, consistent with the centres of such galaxies exhibiting interaction rates up to two orders of magnitude larger than typical field galaxies. The burst properties could naturally be explained via compact object mergers involving white dwarfs (WD), neutron stars (NS) or black holes (BH). These may form dynamically in dense stellar clusters, or originate in a gaseous disc around the supermassive black hole. Future electromagnetic and gravitational-wave observations in tandem thus offer a route to probe the dynamical fraction and the details of dynamical interactions in galactic nuclei and other high density stellar systems., Comment: Accepted to Nature Astronomy. Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) are X-ray flares with a duration ranging from a few hundred seconds to a few hours. Possible origins include the tidal disruption of a white dwarf by an intermediate-mass black hole, a supernova shock breakout, and a binary neutron star merger. We present the X-ray light curve and spectrum, and deep optical imaging of the FXT XRT 210423, which has been suggested to be powered by a magnetar produced in a binary neutron star merger. Our Very Large Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) observations began on May 6, 2021, thirteen days after the onset of the flare. No transient optical counterpart is found in the 1" (3$\sigma$) X-ray uncertainty region of the source to a depth $g_{s}$=27.0 AB mag. A candidate host lies within the 1" X-ray uncertainty region with a magnitude of 25.9 $\pm$ 0.1 in the GTC/HiPERCAM $g_s$-filter. Due to its faintness, it was not detected in other bands, precluding a photometric redshift determination. We detect two additional candidate host galaxies; one with $z_{\rm spec}=1.5082 \pm 0.0001$ and an offset of 4.2$\pm$1" (37$\pm$9 kpc) from the FXT and another one with $z_{\rm phot}=1.04^{+0.22}_{-0.14}$, at an offset of 3.6$\pm$1" (30$\pm$8 kpc). Based on the properties of all the prospective hosts we favour a binary neutron star merger, as previously suggested in the literature, as explanation for XRT 210423., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. We present a high time resolution, multi-frequency linear polarization analysis of Very Large Array (VLA) radio observations during some of the brightest radio flaring (~1 Jy) activity of the 2015 outburst of V404 Cygni. The VLA simultaneously captured the radio evolution in two bands (each with two 1 GHz base-bands), recorded at 5/7 GHz and 21/26 GHz, allowing for a broadband polarimetric analysis. Given the source's high flux densities, we were able to measure polarization on timescales of ~13 minutes, constituting one of the highest temporal resolution radio polarimetric studies of a black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) outburst to date. Across all base-bands, we detect variable, weakly linearly polarized emission (<1%) with a single, bright peak in the time-resolved polarization fraction, consistent with an origin in an evolving, dynamic jet component. We applied two independent polarimetric methods to extract the intrinsic electric vector position angles and rotation measures from the 5 and 7 GHz base-band data and detected a variable intrinsic polarization angle, indicative of a rapidly evolving local environment or a complex magnetic field geometry. Comparisons to the simultaneous, spatially-resolved observations taken with the Very Long Baseline Array at 15.6 GHz, do not show a significant connection between the jet ejections and the polarization state., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, accepted by MNRAS

A star tidally disrupted by a black hole can form an accretion disc with a super-Eddington mass accretion rate; the X-ray emission produced by the inner disc provides constraints on the black hole mass $M_\bullet$ and dimensionless spin parameter $a_\bullet$. Previous studies have suggested that the $M_\bullet$ responsible for the tidal disruption event 3XMM J150052.0+015452 (hereafter J150052) is $\sim$10$^{5} M_{\odot}$, in the intermediate black hole (IMBH) regime. Fitting multi-epoch XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray spectra obtained after 2008 during the source's decade-long decay, with our latest slim accretion disc model gives $M_\bullet = 2.0^{+1.0}_{-0.3}\times10^{5} M_{\odot}$ (at 68% confidence) and $a_\bullet > 0.97$ (a 84.1% confidence lower limit). The spectra obtained between 2008-2014 are significantly harder than those after 2014, an evolution that can be well explained by including the effects of inverse-Comptonisation by a corona on the early-time spectra. The corona is present when the source accretion rate is super-Eddington, while there is no evidence for its effect in data obtained after 2014, when the mass accretion rate is around the Eddington-limit. Based on our spectral study, we infer that the corona is optically thick and warm ($kT_e=2.3^{+2.7}_{-0.8}$ keV). Our mass and spin measurements of J150052 confirm it as an IMBH and point to a rapid, near extremal, spin. These $M_\bullet$ and $a_\bullet$ values rule out both vector bosons and axions of masses $\sim10^{-16}$ eV., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

A black hole can launch a powerful relativistic jet after it tidally disrupts a star. If this jet fortuitously aligns with our line of sight, the overall brightness is Doppler boosted by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, such on-axis relativistic tidal disruption events (TDEs) have the potential to unveil cosmological (redshift $z>$1) quiescent black holes and are ideal test beds to understand the radiative mechanisms operating in super-Eddington jets. Here, we present multi-wavelength (X-ray, UV, optical, and radio) observations of the optically discovered transient \target at $z=1.193$. Its unusual X-ray properties, including a peak observed luminosity of $\gtrsim$10$^{48}$ erg s$^{-1}$, systematic variability on timescales as short as 1000 seconds, and overall duration lasting more than 30 days in the rest-frame are traits associated with relativistic TDEs. The X-ray to radio spectral energy distributions spanning 5-50 days after discovery can be explained as synchrotron emission from a relativistic jet (radio), synchrotron self-Compton (X-rays), and thermal emission similar to that seen in low-redshift TDEs (UV/optical). Our modeling implies a beamed, highly relativistic jet akin to blazars but requires extreme matter-domination, i.e, high ratio of electron-to-magnetic field energy densities in the jet, and challenges our theoretical understanding of jets., Comment: To appear in Nature Astronomy on 30th November 2022. We present two contiguous nights of simultaneous time-resolved GTC spectroscopy and WHT photometry of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1859+226, obtained in 2017 July during quiescence. Cross-correlation of the individual spectra against a late K-type spectral template enabled us to constrain the orbital period to $0.276 \pm 0.003$ d and the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor star to $K_2 = 550 \pm 59$ km s$^{-1}$. An ellipsoidal modulation is detected in the photometric $r$- and $i$-band light curves, although it is strongly contaminated by flickering activity. By exploiting correlations between the properties of the double-peaked H$\alpha$ emission-line profile and the binary parameters, we derived an orbital inclination of $66.6 \pm 4.3$ deg, a refined $K_2 = 562 \pm 40$ km s$^{-1}$ and mass ratio $q = M_2/M_1 = 0.07 \pm 0.01$. From these values we obtained an updated black hole mass of $M_1 = 7.8 \pm 1.9$ M$_\odot$. An independent mass estimate based on X-ray timing agrees well with our value, which gives further support for the outburst QPO triplet being explained by the relativistic precession model. We also obtained a companion star mass $M_2 = 0.55 \pm 0.16$ M$_\odot$, which is consistent with its K5-K7 V spectral type., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Stars that interact with supermassive black holes (SMBHs) can either be completely or partially destroyed by tides. In a partial tidal disruption event (TDE) the high-density core of the star remains intact, and the low-density, outer envelope of the star is stripped and feeds a luminous accretion episode. The TDE AT2018fyk, with an inferred black hole mass of $10^{7.7\pm0.4}$ M$_{\odot}$, experienced an extreme dimming event at X-ray (factor of $>$6000) and UV (factor $\sim$15) wavelengths $\sim$500--600 days after discovery. Here we report on the re-emergence of these emission components roughly 1200 days after discovery. We find that the source properties are similar to those of the pre-dimming accretion state, suggesting that the accretion flow was rejuvenated to a similar state. We propose that a repeating partial TDE, where the partially disrupted star is on a $\sim 1200$ day orbit about the SMBH and is periodically stripped of mass during each pericenter passage, powers its unique lightcurve. This scenario provides a plausible explanation for AT2018fyk's overall properties, including the rapid dimming event and the rebrightening at late times. We also provide testable predictions for the behavior of the accretion flow in the future: if the second encounter was also a partial disruption then we predict another strong dimming event around day 1800 (August 2023), and a subsequent rebrightening around day 2400 (March 2025). We present the results from multi-wavelength observations of a transient discovered during the follow-up of S191213g, a gravitational wave (GW) event reported by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration as a possible binary neutron star merger in a low latency search. This search yielded SN2019wxt, a young transient in a galaxy whose sky position (in the 80\% GW contour) and distance ($\sim$150\,Mpc) were plausibly compatible with the localisation uncertainty of the GW event. Initially, the transient's tightly constrained age, its relatively faint peak magnitude ($M_i \sim -16.7$\,mag) and the $r-$band decline rate of $\sim 1$\,mag per 5\,days appeared suggestive of a compact binary merger. However, SN2019wxt spectroscopically resembled a type Ib supernova, and analysis of the optical-near-infrared evolution rapidly led to the conclusion that while it could not be associated with S191213g, it nevertheless represented an extreme outcome of stellar evolution. By modelling the light curve, we estimated an ejecta mass of $\sim 0.1\,M_\odot$, with $^{56}$Ni comprising $\sim 20\%$ of this. We were broadly able to reproduce its spectral evolution with a composition dominated by helium and oxygen, with trace amounts of calcium. We considered various progenitors that could give rise to the observed properties of SN2019wxt, and concluded that an ultra-stripped origin in a binary system is the most likely explanation. Disentangling electromagnetic counterparts to GW events from transients such as SN2019wxt is challenging: in a bid to characterise the level of contamination, we estimated the rate of events with properties comparable to those of SN2019wxt and found that $\sim 1$ such event per week can occur within the typical GW localisation area of O4 alerts out to a luminosity distance of 500\,Mpc, beyond which it would become fainter than the typical depth of current electromagnetic follow-up campaigns., Comment: By the ENGRAVE collaboration (engrave-eso.org). 35 pages, 20 figures, final version accepted by A&A

We present a new method to derive binary inclinations in quiescent black hole (BH) X-ray transients (XRTs), based on the depth of the trough (T) from double-peaked Ha emission profiles arising in accretion discs. We find that the inclination angle (i) is linearly correlated with T in phase-averaged spectra with sufficient orbital coverage (>~50 per cent) and spectral resolution, following i (deg)=93.5 x T +23.7. The correlation is caused by a combination of line opacity and local broadening, where a leading (excess broadening) component scales with the de-projected velocity of the outer disc. Interestingly, such scaling allows to estimate the fundamental ratio M1/Porb by simply resolving the intrinsic width of the double-peak profile. We apply the T-i correlation to derive binary inclinations for GRO J0422+32 and Swift J1357-0933, two BH XRTs where strong flickering activity has hindered determining their values through ellipsoidal fits to photometric light curves. Remarkably, the inclination derived for GRO J0422+32 (i=55.6+-4.1) implies a BH mass of 2.7+0.7-0.5 Msun thus placing it within the gap that separates BHs from neutron stars. This result proves that low-mass BHs exist in nature and strongly suggests that the so-called "mass gap" is mainly produced by low number statistics and possibly observational biases. On the other hand, we find that Swift J1357-0933 contains a 10.9+1.7-1.6 Msun BH seen nearly edge on (i=87.4+2.6-5.6 deg). We present the results from a dense multi-wavelength (optical/UV, near-infrared (IR), and X-ray) follow-up campaign of the nuclear transient AT2017gge, covering a total of 1698 days from the transient's discovery. The bolometric lightcurve, the black body temperature and radius, the broad H and He I $\lambda$5876 emission lines and their evolution with time, are all consistent with a tidal disruption event (TDE) nature. A soft X-ray flare is detected with a delay of $\sim$200 days with respect to the optical/UV peak and it is rapidly followed by the emergence of a broad He II $\lambda$4686 and by a number of long-lasting high ionization coronal emission lines. This indicate a clear connection between a TDE flare and the appearance of extreme coronal line emission (ECLEs). An IR echo, resulting from dust re-radiation of the optical/UV TDE light is observed after the X-ray flare and the associated near-IR spectra show a transient broad feature in correspondence of the He I $\lambda$10830 and, for the first time in a TDE, a transient high-ionization coronal NIR line (the [Fe XIII] $\lambda$10798) is also detected. The data are well explained by a scenario in which a TDE occurs in a gas and dust rich environment and its optical/UV, soft X-ray, and IR emission have different origins and locations. The optical emission may be produced by stellar debris stream collisions prior to the accretion disk formation, which is instead responsible for the soft X-ray flare, emitted after the end of the circularization process., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

For decades, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been broadly divided into `long'- and `short'-duration bursts, lasting more or less than 2s, respectively. However, this dichotomy does not map perfectly to the two progenitor channels that are known to produce GRBs -- the merger of compact objects (merger-GRBs) or the collapse of massive stars (collapsar-GRBs). In particular, the merger-GRBs population may also include bursts with a short, hard $\lesssim$2s spike and subsequent longer, softer extended emission (EE). The recent discovery of a kilonova -- the radioactive glow of heavy elements made in neutron star mergers -- in the 50s-duration GRB 211211A further demonstrates that mergers can drive long, complex GRBs that mimic the collapsar population. Here we present a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the high-energy emission of GRB 211211A. We demonstrate that the emission has a purely synchrotron origin, with both the peak and cooling frequencies moving through the $\gamma$-ray band down to the X-rays, and that the rapidly-evolving spectrum drives the EE signature at late times. Over the past few years, $\sim$30 extragalactic fast X-ray transients (FXRTs) have been discovered, mainly in Chandra and XMM-Newton data. Their nature remains unclear, with proposed origins including a double neutron star merger, a tidal disruption event involving an intermediate-mass black hole and a white dwarf, or a supernova shock breakout. A decisive differentiation between these three promising mechanisms for their origin requires an understanding of the FXRT energetics, environments, and/or host properties. We present optical observations obtained with the Very Large Telescope for the FXRTs XRT 000519 and XRT 110103 and Gran Telescopio Canarias observations for XRT 000519 designed to search for host galaxies of these FXRTs. In the $g_s$, $r_s$ and $R$-band images, we detect an extended source on the North-West side of the $\sim$ $1^{\prime\prime}$ (68% confidence) error circle of the X-ray position of XRT 000519 with a Kron magnitude of $g_s=$26.29$\pm$0.09 (AB magnitude). We discuss the XRT 000519 association with the probable host candidate for various possible distances, and we conclude that if XRT 000519 is associated with the host candidate a supernova shock breakout scenario is likely excluded. It is well established that magnetars are neutron stars with extreme magnetic fields and young ages, but the evolutionary pathways to their creation are still uncertain. Since most massive stars are in binaries, if magnetars are a frequent result of core-collapse supernovae, some fraction are expected to have a bound companion at the time of observation. In this paper, we utilise literature constraints, including deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging, to search for bound stellar companions to magnetars. The magnitude and colour measurements are interpreted in the context of binary population synthesis predictions. We find two candidates for stellar companions associated with CXOU J171405.7-381031 and SGR 0755-2933, based on their J-H colours and H-band absolute magnitudes. Overall, the proportion of the Galactic magnetar population with a plausibly stellar near-infrared counterpart candidate, based on their magnitudes and colours, is between 5 and 10 per cent. This is consistent with a population synthesis prediction of 5 per cent, for the fraction of core-collapse neutron stars arising from primaries which remain bound to their companion after the supernova. These results are therefore consistent with magnetars being drawn in an unbiased way from the natal core-collapse neutron star population, but some contribution from alternative progenitor channels cannot be ruled out., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a tabulated version of our slim disk model for fitting tidal disruption events (TDEs). We create a synthetic X-ray spectral library by ray-tracing stationary general relativistic slim disks and including gravitational redshift, Doppler, and lensing effects self-consistently. We introduce the library to reduce computational expense and increase access for fitting future events. Fitting requires interpolation between the library spectra; the interpolation error in the synthetic flux is generally $<10\%$ (it can rise to $40\%$ when the disk is nearly edge-on). We fit the X-ray spectra of the TDEs ASASSN-14li and ASASSN-15oi, successfully reproducing our earlier constraints on black hole mass $M_\bullet$ and spin $a_\bullet$ from full on-the-fly ray-tracing. We use the library to fit mock observational data to explore the degeneracies among parameters, finding that 1) hotter thermal disk and edge-on inclination angle spectra offer tighter constraints on $M_\bullet$ and $a_\bullet$; 2) the constraining power of spectra on $M_\bullet$ and $a_\bullet$ increases as a power-law with the number of X-ray counts, and the index of the power law is higher for hotter thermal disk spectra; 3) multi-epoch X-ray spectra partially break the degeneracy between $M_\bullet$ and $a_\bullet$; 4) the time-dependent level of X-ray absorption can be constrained from spectral fitting. Most massive galaxies contain a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at their center. When galaxies merge, their SMBHs sink to the center of the new galaxy where they are thought to eventually merge. During this process an SMBH binary is formed. The presence of two sets of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) has been interpreted as evidence for two broad line regions (BLR), one surrounding each SMBH in a binary. We modeled the broad Balmer emission lines in SDSS spectra of 373 extreme variability AGNs using one broad and several narrow Gaussian components. We report on the discovery of SDSS J021647.53$-$011341.5 (hereafter J0216) as a double-peaked broad emission line source. Among the 373 AGNs there were five sources that are known double-peaked emission line sources. Three of these have been reported as candidate SMBH binaries in previous studies. We present all six objects and their double-peaked broad Balmer emission lines, and discuss the implications for a tidal disruption event (TDE) interpretation of the extreme variability assuming the double-peaked sources are SMBH binaries., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. [Abridged] We classify AT 2020zso as a TDE based on the blackbody evolution inferred from UV/optical photometric observations, and spectral line content and evolution. We identify transient, double-peaked Bowen (N III), He I, He II and Halpha emission lines. We model medium resolution optical spectroscopy of the He II (after careful deblending of the N III contribution) and Halpha lines during the rise, peak and early decline of the light curve using relativistic, elliptical accretion disk models. We find that the spectral evolution before peak can be explained by optical depth effects consistent with an outflowing, optically thick Eddington envelope. Around peak the envelope reaches its maximum extent (approximately 10^15 or 3000-6000 gravitational radii for an inferred black hole mass of 5-10 10^5) and becomes optically thin. The Halpha and He II emission lines at and after peak can be reproduced with a highly inclined (i=85+-5 degrees), highly elliptical (e=0.97+-0.01) and relatively compact (Rin = several 100 Rg and Rout = several 1000 Rg ) accretion disk. Overall, the line profiles suggest a highly elliptical geometry for the new accretion flow, consistent with theoretical expectations of newly formed TDE disks. We quantitatively confirm, for the first time, the high inclination nature of a Bowen (and X-ray dim) TDE, consistent with the unification picture of TDEs where the inclination largely determines the observational appearance. Rapid line profile variations rule out the binary SMBH hypothesis as the origin of the eccentricity; these results thus provide a direct link between a TDE in an AGN and the eccentric accretion disk. We illustrate for the first time how optical spectroscopy can be used to constrain the black hole spin, through (the lack of) disk precession signatures (changes in inferred inclination) - and rule out high black hole spin values (a < 0.8)., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures and 5 tables. Extragalactic Fast X-ray Transients (FXRTs) are short flashes of X-ray photons spanning a few seconds to hours, with an uncertain origin. Our ignorance about their physical mechanisms and progenitor systems is due in part to the lack of clear multi-wavelength counterparts in most cases because they only have been identified serendipitously. We develop a systematic search of FXRTs using a straightforward X-ray flare search algorithm, in the Chandra Source Catalog (Data Release 2.0; 169.6 Ms over 592.4 deg$^{2}$ using only observations with $|b|>10^{\circ}$ and before 2015), incorporating various multi-wavelength constraints to rule out Galactic contamination and characterize the candidates. We report the detection of 14 FXRT candidates from a parent sample of 214,701 sources. Candidates have peak 0.5-7 keV fluxes between 1$\times$10$^{-13}$ to 2$\times$10$^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and $T_{90}$ values from 4 to 48 ks. The sample can be subdivided into two groups: six "nearby" FXRTs that occurred within $d\lesssim$100 Mpc and eight "distant" FXRTs with likely redshifts $\gtrsim$0.1. Three distant FXRT candidates exhibit light curves with a plateau (${\approx}$1-3 ks duration) followed by a power-law decay and X-ray spectral softening, similar to what was observed for the previously reported FXRT CDF-S~XT2, a proposed magnetar-powered binary neutron star merger event. After applying completeness corrections, we calculate event rates for the nearby and distant samples of 53.7$_{-15.1}^{+22.6}$ and 28.2$_{-6.9}^{+9.8}$ deg$^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively. We observed GRB190114C (redshift z = 0.4245), the first GRB ever detected at TeV energies, at optical and near-infrared wavelengths with several ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope, with the primary goal of studying its underlying supernova, SN2019jrj. The monitoring spanned the time interval between 1.3 and 370 days after the burst, in the observer frame. We find that the afterglow emission can be modelled with a forward shock propagating in a uniform medium modified by time-variable extinction along the line of sight. A jet break could be present after 7 rest-frame days, and accordingly the maximum luminosity of the underlying SN ranges between that of stripped-envelope corecollapse supernovae (SNe) of intermediate luminosity, and that of the luminous GRB-associated SN2013dx. The observed spectral absorption lines of SN2019jrj are not as broad as in classical GRB-SNe, and are rather more similar to those of less-luminous core-collapse SNe. Taking the broad-lined stripped-envelope core-collapse SN2004aw as an analogue, we tentatively derive the basic physical properties of SN2019jrj. We discuss the possibility that a fraction of the TeV emission of this source might have had a hadronic origin and estimate the expected high-energy neutrino detection level with IceCube., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

In this paper we explore the scientific synergies between Athena and some of the key multi-messenger facilities that should be operative concurrently with Athena. These facilities include LIGO A+, Advanced Virgo+ and future detectors for ground-based observation of gravitational waves (GW), LISA for space-based observations of GW, IceCube and KM3NeT for neutrino observations, and CTA for very high energy observations. These science themes encompass pressing issues in astrophysics, cosmology and fundamental physics such as: the central engine and jet physics in compact binary mergers, accretion processes and jet physics in Super-Massive Binary Black Holes (SMBBHs) and in compact stellar binaries, the equation of state of neutron stars, cosmic accelerators and the origin of Cosmic Rays (CRs), the origin of intermediate and high-Z elements in the Universe, the Cosmic distance scale and tests of General Relativity and the Standard Model. Observational strategies for implementing the identified science topics are also discussed. A significant part of the sources targeted by multi-messenger facilities is of transient nature. We have thus also discussed the synergy of \textsl{Athena} with wide-field high-energy facilities, taking THESEUS as a case study for transient discovery. This discussion covers all the Athena science goals that rely on follow-up observations of high-energy transients identified by external observatories, and includes also topics that are not based on multi-messenger observations, such as the search for missing baryons or the observation of early star populations and metal enrichment at the cosmic dawn with Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs)., Comment: White paper of the multi-messenger Athena synergy excersise

The observational signatures of black holes in x-ray binary systems depend on their masses, spins, accretion rate and the misalignment angle between the black hole spin and the orbital angular momentum. We present optical polarimetric observations of the black hole x-ray binary MAXI J1820+070, from which we constrain the position angle of the binary orbital axis. Combining this with previous determinations of the relativistic jet orientation axis, which traces the black hole spin, and the inclination of the orbit, we determine a lower limit of 40 deg on the spin-orbit misalignment angle. The misalignment has to originate from either the binary or black hole formation stage. If other x-ray binaries have similarly large misalignments, these would bias measurements of black hole masses and spins from x-ray observations., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures

We present results of our analysis of spectra of the host galaxies of the candidate Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) XMMSL1 J111527.3+180638 and PTF09axc to determine the nature of these transients. We subtract the starlight component from the host galaxy spectra to determine the origin of the nuclear emission lines. Using a Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich (BPT) diagram we conclude that the host galaxy of XMMSL1 J111527.3+180638 is classified as a Seyfert galaxy, suggesting this transient is likely to be caused by (extreme) variability in the active galactic nucleus. We find that the host of PTF09axc falls in the 'star-forming' region of the BPT-diagram, implying that the transient is a strong TDE candidate. For both galaxies we find a WISE-colour difference of $W1-W2<0.8$, which means there is no indication of a dusty torus and therefore an active galactic nucleus, seemingly contradicting our BPT finding for the host of XMMSL1 J111527.3+180638. Spectroscopically, TDEs are characterized by broad ( 10$^{4}$ km/s) emission lines and show large diversity as well as different line profiles. After carefully and consistently performing a series of data reduction tasks including host galaxy light subtraction, we present here the first detailed, spectroscopic population study of 16 optical/UV TDEs. We report a time lag between the peaks of the optical light-curves and the peak luminosity of H$\alpha$ spanning between 7 - 45 days. If interpreted as light-echoes, these lags correspond to distances of 2 - 12 x 10$^{16}$ cm, one to two orders of magnitudes larger than the estimated blackbody radii (R$_{\rm BB}$) of the same TDEs and we discuss the possible origin of this surprisingly large discrepancy. We also report time lags for the peak luminosity of He I $\lambda$5876 line; smaller than the ones of H$\alpha$ for H TDEs and similar or larger for N III Bowen TDEs. We report that N III Bowen TDEs have lower H$\alpha$ velocity widths compared to the rest of the TDEs in our sample and we also find that a strong X-ray to optical ratio might imply weakening of the line widths. Furthermore, we study the evolution of line luminosities and ratios with respect to their radii (R$_{\rm BB}$) and temperatures (T$_{\rm BB}$). We find a linear relationship between H$\alpha$ luminosity and the R$_{\rm BB}$ and potentially an inverse power-law relation with T$_{\rm BB}$ leading to weaker H$\alpha$ emission for T$_{\rm BB}$ $\geq$ 25000 K. The He II/He I ratio becomes large at the same temperatures possibly pointing to an ionization effect. The He II/H$\alpha$ ratio becomes larger as the photospheric radius recedes, implying a stratified photosphere where Helium lies deeper than Hydrogen. We present a complete dynamical study of the intermediate polar and dwarf nova cataclysmic variable GK Per (Nova Persei 1901) based on a multi-site optical spectroscopy and $R$-band photometry campaign. The radial velocity curve of the evolved donor star has a semi-amplitude $K_2=126.4 \pm 0.9 \, \mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ and an orbital period $P=1.996872 \pm 0.000009 \, \mathrm{d}$. We refine the projected rotational velocity of the donor star to $v_\mathrm{rot} \sin i = 52 \pm 2 \, \mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ which, together with $K_2$, provides a donor star to white dwarf mass ratio $q=M_2/M_1=0.38 \pm 0.03$. We also determine the orbital inclination of the system by modelling the phase-folded ellipsoidal light curve and obtain $i=67^{\circ} \pm 5^{\circ}$. The resulting dynamical masses are $M_{1}=1.03^{+0.16}_{-0.11} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and $M_2 = 0.39^{+0.07}_{-0.06} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ at $68$ per cent confidence level. The white dwarf dynamical mass is compared with estimates obtained by modelling the decline light curve of the $1901$ nova event and X-ray spectroscopy. The best matching mass estimates come from the nova light curve models and an X-ray data analysis that uses the ratio between the Alfv\'en radius in quiescence and during dwarf nova outburst., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We propose a model to explain the time delay between the peak of the optical and X-ray luminosity, \dt hereafter, in UV/optically-selected tidal disruption events (TDEs). The following picture explains the observed \dt in several TDEs as a consequence of the circularization and disk accretion processes as long as the sub-Eddington accretion. At the beginning of the circularization, the fallback debris is thermalized by the self-crossing shock caused by relativistic precession, providing the peak optical emission. During the circularization process, the mass fallback rate decreases with time to form a ring around the supermassive black hole (SMBH). The formation timescale corresponds to the circularization timescale of the most tightly bound debris, which is less than a year to several decades, depending mostly on the penetration factor, the circularization efficiency, and the black hole mass. The ring will subsequently evolve viscously over the viscous diffusion time. We find that it accretes onto the SMBH on a fraction of the viscous timescale, which is $2$ years for given typical parameters, leading to X-ray emission at late times. The resultant \dt\,is given by the sum of the circularization timescale and the accretion timescale and significantly decreases with increasing penetration factor to several to $\sim10$ years typically. Since the X-ray luminosity substantially decreases as the viewing angle between the normal to the disk plane and line-of-sight increases from $0^\circ$ to $90^\circ$, a low late-time X-ray luminosity can be explained by an edge-on view. Since July 2014, the Gaia mission has been engaged in a high-spatial-resolution, time-resolved, precise, accurate astrometric, and photometric survey of the entire sky. Aims: We present the Gaia Science Alerts project, which has been in operation since 1 June 2016. We describe the system which has been developed to enable the discovery and publication of transient photometric events as seen by Gaia. Methods: We outline the data handling, timings, and performances, and we describe the transient detection algorithms and filtering procedures needed to manage the high false alarm rate. We identify two classes of events: (1) sources which are new to Gaia and (2) Gaia sources which have undergone a significant brightening or fading. Validation of the Gaia transit astrometry and photometry was performed, followed by testing of the source environment to minimise contamination from Solar System objects, bright stars, and fainter near-neighbours. Results: We show that the Gaia Science Alerts project suffers from very low contamination, that is there are very few false-positives. We find that the external completeness for supernovae, $C_E=0.46$, is dominated by the Gaia scanning law and the requirement of detections from both fields-of-view. Where we have two or more scans the internal completeness is $C_I=0.79$ at 3 arcsec or larger from the centres of galaxies, but it drops closer in, especially within 1 arcsec. Conclusions: The per-transit photometry for Gaia transients is precise to 1 per cent at $G=13$, and 3 per cent at $G=19$. The per-transit astrometry is accurate to 55 milliarcseconds when compared to Gaia DR2.
