Optimal control of stochastic systems plays a prominent role in nonequilibrium physics, with applications in the study of biological molecular motors and the design of single-molecule experiments. The optimization problem rarely admits exact analytic solutions, but under slow driving it can be recast geometrically solely in terms of equilibrium properties. Minimum-work protocols are geodesics on a thermodynamic manifold whose metric is a generalized friction tensor. Here we derive two decompositions of a full-control friction tensor that assumes total control over the potential energy. Arbitrary conservative-control friction tensors are then inherited metrics on hypersurfaces of constraint. Our reformulation simplifies the derivation of friction tensors for many systems and provides design principles for optimal control. This approach gives insight into the domain of applicability of the friction-tensor formalism by demonstrating explicitly how minimum-work protocols take advantage of multi-exponential relaxation to increase accuracy., Comment: 11 pages, 1 page appendices, 5 figures

Project Euphonia, a Google initiative, is dedicated to improving automatic speech recognition (ASR) of disordered speech. A central objective of the project is to create a large, high-quality, and diverse speech corpus. This report describes the project's latest advancements in data collection and annotation methodologies, such as expanding speaker diversity in the database, adding human-reviewed transcript corrections and audio quality tags to 350K (of the 1.2M total) audio recordings, and amassing a comprehensive set of metadata (including more than 40 speech characteristic labels) for over 75\% of the speakers in the database. We report on the impact of transcript corrections on our machine-learning (ML) research, inter-rater variability of assessments of disordered speech patterns, and our rationale for gathering speech metadata. An outstanding challenge for deployable quantum technologies is the availability of high-resolution laser spectroscopy at the specific wavelengths of ultranarrow transitions in atomic and solid-state quantum systems. Here, we demonstrate a powerful spectroscopic tool that synergistically combines high resolution with flexible wavelength access, by showing that nonlinear nanophotonics can be readily pumped with electro-optic frequency combs to enable highly coherent spectral translation with essentially no efficiency loss. Third-order (\c{hi}(3)) optical parametric oscillation in a silicon nitride microring enables nearly a million optical frequency comb pump teeth to be translated onto signal and idler beams; while the comb tooth spacing and bandwidth are adjustable through electro-optic control, the signal and idler carrier frequencies are widely tuneable through dispersion engineering. We then demonstrate the application of these devices to quantum systems, by performing sub-Doppler spectroscopy of the hyperfine transitions of a Cs atomic vapor with our electro-optically-driven Kerr nonlinear light source. The generality, robustness, and agility of this approach as well as its compatibility with photonic integration are expected to lead to its widespread applications in areas such as quantum sensing, telecommunications, and atomic clocks., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Variational quantum algorithms exploit the features of superposition and entanglement to optimize a cost function efficiently by manipulating the quantum states. They are suitable for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers that recently became accessible to the worldwide research community. Here, we implement and demonstrate the numerical processes on the 5-qubit and 7-qubit quantum processors on the IBM Qiskit Runtime platform. We combine the commercial finite-element-method (FEM) software ABAQUS with the implementation of Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) to establish an integrated pipeline. Three examples are used to investigate the performance: a hexagonal truss, a Timoshenko beam, and a plane-strain continuum. We conduct parametric studies on the convergence of fundamental natural frequency estimation using this hybrid quantum-classical approach. Our findings can be extended to problems with many more degrees of freedom when quantum computers with hundreds of qubits become available in the near future.

Bamboo has a functionally-graded microstructure that endows it with a combination of desirable properties, such as high failure strain, high toughness, and a low density. As a result, bamboo has been widely used in load-bearing structures. In this work, we study the use of bamboo-inspired void patterns to geometrically improve the failure properties of structures made from brittle polymers. We perform finite element analysis and experiments on 3D-printed structures to quantify the effect of the shape and spatial distribution of voids on the fracture behavior. The introduction of periodic, uniformly distributed voids in notched bend specimens leads to a 15-fold increase in the work of fracture relative to solid specimens. Adding a gradient to the pattern of voids leads to a cumulative 55-fold improvement in the work of fracture. Mechanistically, the individual voids result in crack blunting, which suppresses crack initiation, while neighboring voids redistribute stresses throughout the sample to enable large deformation before failure. In addition, we conduct qualitative, low-energy impact experiments on PMMA plates with laser-cut void patterns, illustrating the broader potential for this strategy to improve damage tolerance and energy absorption in a wide range of materials systems.

In this work, we show that collisions of one type of nonlinear wave can lead to generation of a different kind of nonlinear wave. Specifically, we demonstrate the formation of topological solitons (or transition waves) via collisions of elastic vector solitons, another type of nonlinear wave, in a multi-stable mechanical system with coupling between translational and rotational degrees of freedom. We experimentally observe the nucleation of a phase transformation arising from colliding waves, and we numerically investigate head-on and overtaking collisions of solitary waves with vectorial properties (i.e., elastic vector solitons). Unlike KdV-type solitons, which maintain their shape despite collisions, our system shows that collisions of two vector solitons can cause nucleation of a new phase via annihilation of the vector soltions, triggering the propagation of transition waves. The propagation of these depends both on the amount of energy carried by the vector solitons and on their respective rotational directions. The observation of the initiation of transition waves with collisions of vector solitons in multistable mechanical systems serves as an example of new fundamental nonlinear wave interactions, and could also prove useful in applications involving reconfigurable structures.

To optimize the performance of the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at CERN-ISOLDE, technical upgrades are continuously introduced, aiming to enhance its sensitivity, precision, stability, and efficiency. Recently, a voltage-scanning setup was developed and commissioned at CRIS, which improved the scanning speed by a factor of three as compared to the current laser-frequency scanning approach. This leads to faster measurements of the hyperfine structure for systems with high yields (more than a few thousand ions per second). Additionally, several beamline sections have been redesigned and manufactured, including a new field-ionization unit, a sharper electrostatic bend, and improved ion optics. The beamline upgrades are expected to yield an improvement of at least a factor of 5 in the signal-to-noise ratio by suppressing the non-resonant laser ions and providing time-of-flight separation between the resonant ions and the collisional background. Overall, the presented developments will further improve the selectivity, sensitivity, and efficiency of the CRIS technique., Comment: 10 pages. In this work, we report observations of phase transitions in 2D multistable mechanical metamaterials that are initiated by collisions of soliton-like pulses in the metamaterial. Analogous to first-order phase transitions in crystalline solids, we experimentally and numerically observe that the multistable metamaterials support phase transitions if the new phase meets or exceeds a critical nucleus size. If this criterion is met, the new phase subsequently propagates in the form of transition waves, converting the rest of the metamaterial to the new phase. More interestingly, we observe that the critical nucleus can be formed via collisions of soliton-like pulses. Moreover, the rich direction-dependent behavior of the nonlinear pulses enables control of the location of nucleation and the spatio-temporal shape of the growing phase.

This paper presents a power distribution network (PDN) decoupling capacitor optimization application with three primary goals: reduction of solution times for large networks, development of flexible network scoring routines, and a concentration strictly on achieving the best network performance. Example optimizations are performed using broadband models of a printed circuit board (PCB), a chip-package, on-die networks, and candidate capacitors. A novel worst-case time-domain optimization technique is presented as an alternative to the traditional frequency-domain approach. The trade-offs and criteria for scoring the computed network are presented. Flexible mechanical metamaterials are compliant structures engineered to achieve unique properties via the large deformation of their components. While their static character has been studied extensively, the study of their dynamic properties is still at an early stage, especially in the nonlinear regime induced by their high deformability. Nevertheless, recent studies show that these systems provide new opportunities for the control of large amplitude elastic waves. Integrated nonlinear wavelength converters transfer optical energy from lasers or quantum emitters to other useful colors, but chromatic dispersion limits the range of achievable wavelength shifts. Moreover, because of geometric dispersion, fabrication tolerances reduce the accuracy with which devices produce specific target wavelengths. Here, we report nonlinear wavelength converters whose operation is not contingent on dispersion engineering; yet, the output wavelengths are controlled with high accuracy. In our scheme, coherent coupling between counter-propagating waves in a photonic crystal microresonator induces a photonic bandgap that isolates (in dispersion space) specific wavenumbers for nonlinear gain. We first demonstrate the wide applicability of this strategy to parametric nonlinear processes, by simulating its use in third harmonic generation, dispersive wave formation in Kerr microcombs, and four-wave mixing Bragg scattering. In experiments, we demonstrate Kerr optical parametric oscillators in which such wavenumber-selective coherent coupling designates the signal mode. As a result, differences between the targeted and realized signal wavelengths are <0.3 percent. Moreover, leveraging the bandgap-protected wavenumber selectivity, we continuously tune the output frequencies by nearly 300 GHz without compromising efficiency. Our results will bring about a paradigm shift in how microresonators are designed for nonlinear optics, and they make headway on the larger problem of building wavelength-accurate light sources using integrated photonics., Comment: 6 main figures, 1 supplemental figure

In this letter we investigate the propagation of nonlinear pulses along the free surface of flexible metamaterials based on the rotating squares mechanism. While these metamaterials have previously been shown to support the propagation of elastic vector solitons through their bulk, here we demonstrate that they can also support the stable propagation of nonlinear pulses along their free surface. Further, we show that the stability of these surface pulses is higher when they minimally interact with the linear dispersive surface modes. Although personalized automatic speech recognition (ASR) models have recently been designed to recognize even severely impaired speech, model performance may degrade over time for persons with degenerating speech. The aims of this study were to (1) analyze the change of performance of ASR over time in individuals with degrading speech, and (2) explore mitigation strategies to optimize recognition throughout disease progression. Speech was recorded by four individuals with degrading speech due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Word error rates (WER) across recording sessions were computed for three ASR models: Unadapted Speaker Independent (U-SI), Adapted Speaker Independent (A-SI), and Adapted Speaker Dependent (A-SD or personalized). The performance of all three models degraded significantly over time as speech became more impaired, but the performance of the A-SD model improved markedly when it was updated with recordings from the severe stages of speech progression. Recording additional utterances early in the disease before speech degraded significantly did not improve the performance of A-SD models. Overall, our findings emphasize the importance of continuous recording (and model retraining) when providing personalized models for individuals with progressive speech impairments., Comment: Submitted to ICASSP 2023

Recommendations for common outcome measures following pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) support the integration of instrumental measurements alongside perceptual assessment in recovery and treatment plans. A comprehensive set of sensitive, robust and non-invasive measurements is therefore essential in assessing variations in speech characteristics over time following pediatric TBI. In this article, we study the changes in the acoustic speech patterns of a pediatric cohort of ten subjects diagnosed with severe TBI. We extract a diverse set of both well-known and novel acoustic features from child speech recorded throughout the year after the child produced intelligible words. These features are analyzed individually and by speech subsystem, within-subject and across the cohort. As a group, older children exhibit highly significant (p<0.01) increases in pitch variation and phoneme diversity, shortened pause length, and steadying articulation rate variability. Younger children exhibit similar steadied rate variability alongside an increase in formant-based articulation complexity. Correlation analysis of the feature set with age and comparisons to normative developmental data confirm that age at injury plays a significant role in framing the recovery trajectory. Nearly all speech features significantly change (p<0.05) for the cohort as a whole, confirming that acoustic measures supplementing perceptual assessment are needed to identify efficacious treatment targets for speech therapy following TBI.

Optical parametric oscillators are widely used to generate coherent light at frequencies not accessible by conventional laser gain. However, chip-based parametric oscillators operating in the visible spectrum have suffered from pump-to-signal conversion efficiencies typically less than 0.1 %. Here, we demonstrate efficient optical parametric oscillators based on silicon nitride photonics that address frequencies between 260 THz (1150 nm) and 510 THz (590 nm). Pumping silicon nitride microrings near 385 THz (780 nm) yields monochromatic signal and idler waves with unprecedented output powers in this wavelength range. We estimate on-chip output powers (separately for the signal and idler) between 1 mW and 5 mW and conversion efficiencies reaching approximately 15 %. Underlying this improved performance is our development of pulley waveguides for broadband near-critical coupling, which exploits a fundamental connection between the waveguide-resonator coupling rate and conversion efficiency. Finally, we find that mode competition reduces conversion efficiency at high pump powers, thereby constraining the maximum realizable output power. Our work proves that optical parametric oscillators built with integrated photonics can produce useful amounts of visible laser light with high efficiency.
