In the aftermath of the 2019’ tropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth, we assessed the Caraboidea communities of Gorongosa National Park (GNP) in Mozambique. Influence of the wet season, after a long period of drought, was evaluated on alpha and beta diversity of Caraboidea in the main habitat types of the park: miombo forests, mixed forests, transitional forests, and grasslands (open savannas). Caraboid communities were sampled by pitfall traps set up in 25 sites of each habitat type along three sampling periods, comprising the transition of dry season to the wet season. After the first rainfall, an increase in alpha diversity was observed across GNP habitats, particularly in grasslands. Higher values of beta diversity were observed between the dry and wet seasons, particularly in grasslands. In contrast, dissimilarities in caraboid communities between seasons were not significant in the transitional forests. A higher proportion of xerophilous species, with smaller body size and higher dispersal ability (winged species) was found in grasslands whereas bigger sized and more moisture-dependent caraboid species were found in forested habitats, particularly mixed forests. Community body size in grasslands increased after the rainfall, partly due to the occurrence of caraboid species that were exclusive of forest habitats during drought. Transitional forests, as ecotone habitat areas, appeared to support grassland species during drought, serving also as a source of forests species that may colonize the open areas in the wet season. Hygrophilous forest species will probably be more threatened by climate aridification and future landscape changes due to climate change.

The role of tree canopies in protecting soil functional diversity is essential for ecosystems threatened by the longer lasting periods of drought, which are predicted to increase in the southern afro-tropical region. Nonetheless, biodiversity inventories of soil mesofauna are scarce in afro-tropical ecosystems, even in emblematic and well-studied protected areas, such as the Gorongosa National Park (GNP). Understanding the interrelationships between tree canopies and soil fauna functional diversity can provide insightful information for future adaptive management to protect wildlife and ecosystem services in the GNP, in the context of climate change. Here we assessed collembolan functional type richness and functional diversity in the dry period and during the rainfall across major GNP habitat types: miombo forests, mixed forests, and open savanna/floodplains. Besides the significant positive influence of rainfall, habitat types also influenced functional type’ richness and diversity of collembolan life-forms. Environmental gradients across habitat types, namely the area of tree canopy cover and its indirect effect on soil local conditions (pH and nutrient availability), explained collembolan functional parameters. Calcium concentrations and soil alkalinity significantly enhanced collembolan functional type richness and functional diversity, respectively. Collembola survival across GNP habitats depended on the canopy buffering in the dry sampling period. These results highlight the key role of tree canopies in creating suitable microhabitat conditions supporting soil functional diversity and the sustainability of soil processes and ecosystem services in GNP. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Intermittent streams, dominant in arid and semi-arid regions, are considered to be more representative of global river networks than perennial rivers. The impacts of constant changes in hydrological regime on the functioning of these streams and associated riparian areas does, however, remain to be elucidated. In this study, litter derived from two deciduous tree species (chestnut and oak) was used to compare microbial–decomposition patterns between an intermittent stream channel and its riparian area over a 1-year period. The stream channel exhibited higher decomposition rates than the riparian area for litter from both species, and higher fungal biomass only for chestnut. Despite a prolonged absence of streambed surface water (254 days), differences in hydrological conditions in the wetter seasons (autumn and winter) shape the decomposition dynamics in both zones throughout the whole hydrological cycle. The results point out the importance of the “hydrological imprint” for the leaves’ degradation; long-term studies are advisable over short-term ones to better understand the functioning of intermittent streams.

Intensive agriculture along with the use of agrochemicals has been associated with low soil fertility, soil erosion, and soil acidity. Management of soil pH through liming is a common practice in agriculture to increase soil fertility and nutrient availability. When altering soil pH, different chemical reactions occur depending on soil composition and agrochemicals presence. Basamid® is a fumigant used worldwide targeting soil nematodes, fungi, and weeds in diverse crops, that can reach freshwater ecosystems by leaching through the soil layers. The major goal of this work was to assess the influence of soil pH in the toxicity of Basamid® eluates to the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata and the duckweed Lemna minor. For this, eluates were prepared from soils with different pH (5.5, 6.5 and 7.5), contaminated with the recommended dose of Basamid® corresponding to 145.7 mg of dazomet/Kg soil. Bactrocera oleae is the main pest in olive groves, and its management requires a sustainable perspective to reduce the use of chemical products. Landscape context is being considered as an important driver of pest reduction, but results on B. oleae show inconsistency to date. Most of landscape-pest control studies focus on the dynamics of the pests within the focal crop, ignoring these dynamics in other land uses. Here we present a study in which we analyze the seasonal population dynamics of the olive pest B. oleae in the most important land uses of a typical olive landscape in Portugal. We found that B. oleae is present in all the land uses and the dynamics are very similar to those in the olive groves. However, the presence of these land uses in the landscape did not display any increase in B. oleae abundance within the olive groves. In contrast, a landscape mainly composed by olive groves increased the abundance of this pest. Importantly, more diverse landscapes surrounding olive groves reduce the abundance of the olive fly. Based on these findings, we can conclude that B. oleae is present in all the land uses of the studied landscape but that this presence does not imply an increase of B. oleae in olive groves. Indeed, other land uses can promote landscape diversification which is a driver of the reduction of B. oleae populations in olive groves. We thus encourage olive stakeholders to increase landscape diversification around their farms by promoting/restoring other crops/habitats.

Agricultural intensification has increased the number of stressors that pollinators are exposed to. Besides increasing landscape fragmentation that limit the supply of flower resources, intensive agricultural practices relying on the use of pesticides to control agricultural pests also affect non-target organisms like honey bees. The use of most pesticides containing neonicotinoids has been severely restricted in the European Union, leaving pesticides containing acetamiprid as the only ones that are still authorized. In the meantime, new substances like sulfoxaflor, that have a similar mode of action acting on the insect's nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR), have been approved for agricultural use. In Europe and USA, the use of pesticides containing this active ingredient is limited due to toxic effects already reported on bees, but no restrictions regarding this matter were applied in other countries (e.g., Brazil). In this study, homing ability tests with acetamiprid and sulfoxaflor were performed, in which honey bees were fed with three sub-lethal doses from each substance. After exposure, each honey bee was equipped with an RFID chip and released 1 km away from the colony to evaluate their homing ability. No significant effects were detected in honey bees fed with 32, 48 and 61 ng of acetamiprid while a poor performance on their homing ability, with only 28% of them reaching the colony instead of 75%, was detected at a 26 ng/a.s./bee dose of sulfoxaflor. Although, both pesticides act on the nAChR, the higher sulfoxaflor toxicity might be related with the honey bees detoxifying mechanisms, which are more effective on cyano-based neonicotinoids (i.e., acetamiprid) than sulfoximines. With this study we encourage the use of homing ability tests to be a suitable candidate to integrate the future risk assessment scheme, providing valuable data to models predicting effects on colony health that emerge from the individual actions of each bee.

Biobased and biodegradable plastic mulch films (aka, mulch biofilm) have emerged as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic mulch films in agriculture, promising to reduce soil contamination with plastic residues through in situ biodegradation. However, current standards certifying biodegradable plastics cannot predict biodegradability in natural settings. The scarce studies considering the possible biodegradation and ecotoxicity of mulch biofilms in soil systems question the environmental friendliness of these alternative options. This study assessed the biodegradation of a commercially available mulch biofilm by the soil-dwelling fungus Penicillium brevicompactum (in solid culture media and soil for 15 and 28 days, respectively), and the ecotoxicological effects of mulch biofilm microplastics on the earthworm Eisenia andrei (pristine or UV-weathered, at 0.125-0.250-0.500 g/kg). Results (from microplastics' mass loss, microscopy, and FTIR spectroscopy) suggest that the presence of P. brevicompactum promotes mulch biofilm's biodegradation. Exposure to environmental concentrations of pristine biofilm microplastics (and its ingestion) increased earthworms' sensitivity to touch, induced physiological alterations, decreased energy reserves, and decreased their reproduction (30%). Conversely, exposure to weathered biofilm microplastics slightly increased earthworms' sensitivity, as well as carbohydrate reserves,without affecting their reproduction. The tested mulch biofilm seems to be, at first sight, an environmentally friendly alternative as it presented susceptibility for biodegradation by a widespread fungus, and the absence of ecotoxicological chronic effects on a key macroinvertebrate species in soil ecosystems when considering environmental relevant concentrations and plastics weathered conditions. Notwithstanding, the obtained results highlight the need to revise current standards, as they often neglect the role of, and their chronic effects on, naturally occurring organisms.

Intensification of agricultural landscapes to fulfil increased global food demands has dramatically impacted biodiversity and ecosystem services. Several pollinator groups, which are vital for the maintenance of pollinator-dependent crops, have been severely affected by this intensification process. Management tools, such as the implementation of agri-environmental schemes, have been widely proposed to improve pollinator's communities and pollination services, although the effectiveness of wildflower strips in comparison to existing natural or semi-natural habitats and the impact on yield has not been fully demonstrated. Here, we aimed to assess the effect of flower strips implementation near sunflower fields in two intensive agricultural regions and to quantify their impact on visitation rates and sunflower productivity. Data were obtained in two regions in Spain (Burgos and Cuenca) in sunflower fields with associated semi-natural vegetation (SNVs), with implemented wildflower strips (WFSs) and without vegetation structures (NonVs). Visitation rates were monitored over 2 years by direct observations, and both sunflower seed production and weight were assessed in 52 fields per year. Our results revealed regional and inter-annual variation in visitation rates, likely driven by structural differences in the landscapes studied. In Cuenca, characterized by more heterogeneous and floral resources-richer landscapes, the effects of WFSs were significant in the second year of implementation, with higher visitation rates and productivity values in fields with implemented wildflower strips compared to those without. In contrast, in Burgos, no consistent effects among field treatments between years were observed. Synthesis and applications. The implementation of flower strips or maintenance of remnant semi-natural habitats adjacent to sunflower fields showed context-dependent effects on pollinator visitation rates and crop yield. In highly simplified agroecosystems, these interventions may be insufficient or may need longer times to produce significant effects. Honey bee colonies have shown abnormal mortality rates over the last decades. Colonies are exposed to biotic and abiotic stressors including landscape changes caused by human pressure. Modern agriculture and even forestry, rely on pesticide inputs and these chemicals have been indicated as one of the major causes for colony losses. Neonicotinoids are a common class of pesticides used worldwide that are specific to kill insect pests, with acetamiprid being the only neonicotinoid allowed to be applied outdoors in the EU. To evaluate honeybees' exposure to acetamiprid under field conditions as well as to test the use of in-situ tools to monitor pesticide residues, two honeybee colonies were installed in five Eucalyptus sp. plantations having different area where Epik® (active substance: acetamiprid) was applied as in a common spraying event to control the eucalyptus weevil pest. Flowers, fresh nectar, honey bees and colony products samples were collected and analyzed for the presence of acetamiprid residues. Our main findings were that (1) acetamiprid residues were found in samples collected outside the spraying area, (2) the amount of residues transported into the colonies increased with the size of the sprayed area, (3) according to the calculated Exposure to Toxicity Ratio (ETR) values, spraying up to 22 % of honeybees foraging area does not harm the colonies, (4) colony products can be used as a valid tool to monitor colony accumulation of acetamiprid and (5) the use of Lateral Flow Devices (LFDs) can be a cheap, fast and easy tool to apply in the field, to evaluate the presence of acetamiprid residues in the landscape and colony products.

This has triggered the development of several monitoring methods for assessing the temporal development of colony size, food storage, brood and pathogens. Nonetheless, most of these methods are based on visual assessments that are observer-dependent and prone to bias. Furthermore, the impact on colony development (invasiveness), as well as accuracy, were rarely considered when implementing new methods. In this study, we present and test a novel accurate and observer-independent method for honey bee colony assessment, capable of being fully standardized. Honey bee colony size is quantified by assessing the weight of adult bees, while brood and provision are assessed by taking photos and conducting image analysis of the combs with the image analysis software Deepbee®. The invasiveness and accuracy of the method were investigated using field data from two experimental apiaries in Portugal, comparing results from test and control colonies. At the end of each field experiment, most of the tested colonies had the same colony size, brood levels and honey production as the control colonies. Nonetheless, continuous weight data indicated some disturbance in tested colonies in the first year of monitoring. The overall accuracy of the image analysis software was improved by training, indicating that it is possible to adapt the software to local conditions. We conclude that the use of this fully quantitative method offers a more accurate alternative to classic visual colony assessments, with negligible impact on colony development. Understanding the effects of forest-to-agriculture conversion on microbial diversity has been a major goal in soil ecological studies. However, linking community assembly to the ruling ecological processes at local and regional scales remains challenging. Here, we evaluated bacterial community assembly patterns and the ecological processes governing niche specialization in a gradient of geography, seasonality, and land-use change, totalizing 324 soil samples, 43 habitat characteristics (abiotic factors), and 16 metabolic and co-occurrence patterns (biotic factors), in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, a subtropical biome recognized as one the world’s largest and most threatened hotspots of biodiversity. We observed no significant shifts in alpha diversity due to land-use change. Meanwhile, pairwise beta diversities and distance decays were lower in pastures than those observed for forest and no-till soils. Pasture communities showed a predominantly neutral model, regarding stochastic processes, with moderate dispersion, leading to biotic homogenization. Most no-till and forest microbial communities followed a niche-based model, with low rates of dispersal and weak homogenizing selection, indicating niche specialization or variable selection. Historical and evolutionary contingencies, as represented by soil type, season, and dispersal process were the main drivers of microbial assembly and processes at the local scale, markedly correlated with the occurrence of endemic microbes. Our results indicate that the patterns of assembly and their governing processes are dependent on the niche occupancy of the taxa evaluated (generalists or specialists). They are also more correlated with historical/evolutionary contingencies and the interactions among taxa (i.e. co-occurrence patterns) than the land-use change itself. Climate change may interfere with the behavior of pesticides and organisms, influencing pesticides toxicity to non-target organisms like collembolans. Aiming to assess the representativeness of the standardized species F. candida to the Collembola group under different temperatures, four species of collembolans - Folsomia candida, Folsomia fimetaria, Proisotoma minuta and Sinella curviseta - were exposed to a new generation insecticide of Chlorantraniliprole, under the standardized temperature of 20 °C, and a temperature foreseeing a global warming scenario of 25 °C. Results showed that F. candida, F. fimetaria and P. minuta were sensitive to Chlorantraniliprole at both temperatures, while S. curviseta was insensitive to the insecticide concentrations up to 457 mg a.i./kg of soil, regardless of the temperature. The sensitivity of F. candida and P. minuta was significantly higher at 25 °C than at 20 °C, while F. fimetaria and S. curviseta remained equally sensitive/insensitive to both temperatures. Results suggest that F. candida can be representative of F. fimetaria under standard conditions but not for F. fimetaria under 25 °C nor for P. minuta and S. curviseta under both temperatures due to the higher sensitivity of F. candida. On the other hand, due to its higher sensitivity, F. candida can be used to define environmentally protective measures (at both test temperatures) but the use of additional Collembola species is recommended to avoid the definition of over-protective goals.

The European Partnership for next generation, systems-based Environmental Risk Assessment (PERA) is a strategic initiative launched by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This initiative is in response to the recognition that the current ERA paradigm has “fallen out of step with scientific knowledge and progress” and the new policy and societal ambitions e.g. the EU Green Deal strategy to better safeguard the environment. As part of the initiative, EFSA commissioned the development of a roadmap to facilitate a transition to an integrated and cross-sectoral environmental risk assessment (ERA) approach. The PERA systems-based approach aims to connect relevant partners from various sectors across regulatory silos, promotes and facilitates the sharing of data and expertise, and improves efficiency and transparency of the risk assessment process. In this External Scientific Report, we present the PERA roadmap that comprises of a problem description (current state), a vision (future state) and a series of steps to move towards the vision (transition process). The PERA roadmap was developed after extensive desk research and multiple stakeholder interviews, that were used to identify partners, areas needing further development, challenges, blockers and collaboration opportunities. We designed a vision for next generation ERAs, initially focused on pesticides, based on the ideas of stakeholders and accounting for the identified strengths and weaknesses of the current ERA system. Workshops were held during which stakeholders were invited to comment on these draft concepts providing valuable feedback for further revision. The PERA vision is a visual framework for systems-based ERA, with a concentric circle model. Its core circle builds upon and strengthens current ERA processes by focusing on pesticide specific aspects useful for comparability and decreasing the assessment complexity of pesticides. The inner core circle is surrounded by a supportive circle of landscape scale ERA, that addresses ecosystems properties of generic relevance for all pesticides. These two ERA circles are in turn connected to surrounding circles representing the agricultural, ecological and production systems as well as the political, economic and social systems. To fully optimize the process these circles need to be interconnected with information feed-back loops. The vision and roadmap were designed to incorporate the strengths, knowledge and expertise of the current state into a new holistically framed systems-based ERA. Strategies for transition, as well as concrete projects to spark the transition process are proposed and include concrete and tangible steps in a holistic direction within the current regulatory framework.

Stream intermittency - periodic sequences of water flow cessation and resumption - occurs throughout the year, across seasons. Even though temperature is a known regulator of litter decomposition in both terrestrial and aquatic environments, comparative experiments on drought durations at distinct temperatures on microbial-mediated decomposition in streams experiencing intermittency are still lacking. Here, three drought temperatures (5, 15 and 25 °C) and two durations (short: 2.5 weeks; long: 5 weeks) were applied in a microcosm study to oak leaf discs colonized in a reference stream; mass loss and associated microbial parameters (fungal biomass, microbial activity, and sporulation rates) were evaluated following re-submersion for 2 weeks. Higher mass loss was found at 15 °C than 25 °C. A prolongation of the drought exposure period had no effect on mass loss, suggesting an early (≤ 2.5 weeks) inhibitor effect of drought on microbial-mediated leaf degradation. Fungal biomass was highest at 25 °C following a short drought, and decreased with a longer drought period at both 15 °C and 25 °C. Microbial activity was not affected by either drought duration or temperature. Sporulation rates and fungal diversity were significantly reduced by the longer drought period; in the short treatment, maximum values were found at 15 °C. In contrast to longer droughts, aquatic fungal communities during short dry periods seem to invest in energetically-expensive physiological responses to desiccation (e.g., ergosterol production) promoting biomass accrual at the expense of mass loss and reproductive output. Under more severe desiccation (higher duration and temperature), the lower diversity of fungal communities seem to result in negative legacy effects for fungal growth and reproductive capacity after flow resumption. These results suggest that native riparian vegetation, through its ability to regulate temperature in streams, may be critical in protecting freshwaters from intensified severity of drought periods in streams experiencing intermittency.

Eucalyptus plantations occupy 26 % of Portuguese forested areas. Its flowers constitute important sources for bees and beekeepers take advantage of this and keep their honey bee colonies within or near the plantations for honey production. Nonetheless, these plantations are susceptible to pests, such as the eucalyptus weevil Gonipterus platensis. To control this weevil, some plantations must be treated with pesticides, which might harm non-target organisms. This study aimed to perform a multifactorial assessment of the health status and development of Apis mellifera iberiensis colonies in two similar landscape windows dominated by Eucalyptus globulus plantations - one used as control and the other with insecticide treatment. In each of the two selected areas, an apiary with five hives was installed and monitored before and after a single application of the insecticide acetamiprid (40 g a.i./ha). Colony health and development, resources use, and pesticide residues accumulation were measured. The results showed that the application of acetamiprid in this area did not alter the health status and development of the colonies. This can be explained by the low levels of residues of acetamiprid detected only in pollen and bee bread samples, ~52 fold lower than the sublethal effect threshold. This could be attributed to the low offer of resources during and after the application event and within the application area, with the consequent foraging outside the sprayed area during that period. Since exposure to pesticides in such complex landscapes seems to be dependent on the spatial and temporal distribution of resources, we highlight some key monitoring parameters and tools that are able to provide reliable information on colony development and use of resources. These tools can be easily applied and can provide a better decision-taking of pesticide application in intensive production systems to decrease the risk of exposure for honey bees.

Environmental risk assessment of contaminated soils requires bioindicators that allow the assessment of bioavailability and toxicity of chemicals. Although many bioassays can determine the ecotoxicity of soil samples in the laboratory, few are available and standardized for on-site application. Bioassays based on specific threshold values that assess the in situ and ex situ bioavailability and risk of metal(loid)s and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils to the land snail Cantareus aspersus have never been simultaneously applied to the same soils. The aims of this study were to compare the results provided by in situ and ex situ bioassays and to determine their respective importance for environmental risk assessment. The feasibility and reproducibility of the in situ bioassay were assessed using an international ring test. This study used five plots located at a former industrial site and six laboratories participated in the ring test. The results revealed the impact of environmental parameters on the bioavailability of metal(loid)s and PAHs to snails exposed in the field to structured soils and vegetation compared to those exposed under laboratory conditions to soil collected from the same field site (excavated soils). The risk coefficients were generally higher ex situ than in situ, with some exceptions (mainly due to Cd and Mo), which might be explained by the in situ contribution of plants and humus layer as sources of exposure of snails to contaminants and by climatic parameters. The ring test showed good agreement among laboratories, which determined the same levels of risk in most of the plots. Comparison of the bioavailability to land snails and the subsequent risk estimated in situ or ex situ highlighted the complementarity between both approaches in the environmental risk assessment of contaminated soils, namely, to guide decisions on the fate and future use of the sites (e.g., excavation, embankments, and land restoration). Spiders are generalist predators adapted to consume a wide range of prey although their ability to exploit non-prey foods such as pollen, nectar, and honeydew has been referred but less studied. In this work, we investigated the effect of different non-prey food items (Glucose at 0.5 M; aphid honeydew; black scale honeydew; a mixture of glucose 0.5 M, phenylalanine 0.1 mM, proline 0.1 mM, and tryptophan 0.1 mM; honey at 10%, and pollen at 10%) on the survival of immature spiders of two functional groups represented by Haplodrassus rufipes (ground hunters) and Synema globosum (ambushers), and their feeding choices, in laboratory experiments. The overall survival of both species fed on non-prey foods significantly increased compared to individuals fed on water. The black-scale honeydew was the best food for H. rufipes increasing longevity up to 117 days. The highest survival reached by S. globosum was observed when fed on a mixture of glucose 0.5 M and three amino acids. When different non-prey food items were offered together, the exploring rate was significantly higher for H. rufipes than for S. globosum. H. rufipes chose to feed on honey whereas S. globosum chose the mixture treatment. The most chosen food items corresponded with those that provided the highest longevities in both species. Our results suggest that spiders could search, recognize and actively select the most beneficial non-prey food. Habitat management practices such as maintaining weed strips in the crop may provide these valuable supplementary food resources within agroecosystems contributing for biological pest control. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The detritivore woodlouse Porcellio dilatatus was selected to test the effects of home-field advantage and land management on the isopod feeding preferences and ingestion rates. Woodlice specimens and plant litter from two neighbouring farms were used in “cafeteria” experiments. The farms are cork-oak agro-forests with a similar litter matrix but different land-use history and current management (organic vs. conventional farms). The plant litter species selected were Quercus suber L. and Agrostis pouretti L. Leaf litter lignin, N and C concentrations, total phenolics, and fungal biomass were measured on both litter species for the assessment of litter quality. A higher preference for cork-oak litter from the conventional site was observed, both in isopods collected from the organic farm and from the conventional farm. This can be explained by the significant differences in litter quality that were found between Quercus litter types collected in the two farms. The differences in the nutritional content (lower C:N ratio for Quercus of the conventional farm) of litter from the same plant species support the assumption of a management effect on decomposition by changing plant litter quality. Yet, this pattern was not found for the other plant litter tested in this study – the grass species Agrostis pouretti. Also, despite the remarkable differences in litter traits between Quercus and Agrostis, no significant differences were found between the ingestion rates of the litter from the two plant species. Although, depending on the plant species, litter quality resulting from different management influenced P. dilatatus feeding preferences and ingestion rates.

Aim: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased cardiovascular risk. Methods: Patients with acute coronary syndrome were retrospectively allocated to three groups (stage 3A, stage 3B or stage 4) based on the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes classification formulas: the CKD Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI; N = 401) and the modification of diet in renal disease (n = 355). The primary end point was all-cause mortality (median follow-up time, 32 months [ 15–70 ]). Results: Study results showed decreased median survival was associated with poor renal function for both the CKD-EPI (78 vs 61 vs 40 months, p = 0.014) and modification of diet in renal disease groups (68 vs 57 vs 32 months, p = 0.006). After adjustment, age (OR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.01–1.14) and pulmonary artery systolic pressure (OR: 1.08; 95% CI: 1.03–1.14), but not estimated glomerular filtration rate, were associated with decreased survival. Conclusion: Study results suggest that poor outcomes after an acute coronary syndrome were associated with comorbidities rather than estimated glomerular filtration rate level.

Lead acetate (AcPb) is an important raw material used in chemical industries worldwide. The potential toxicity of AcPb is generally attributed to the presence of Pb. However, the effect of AcPb on the environment as a whole is still poorly known. This study aimed to evaluate AcPb toxicity on three standard species of soil invertebrates and two plant species using ecotoxicology tests. Three tropical soils (Oxisol, Inceptisol, and Tropical Artificial Soil (TAS)) were contaminated with different concentrations of AcPb and one dose of K-acetate (positive control). These soils were used in tests with Eisenia andrei (earthworm), Folsomia candida (springtail), Enchytraeus crypticus (enchytraeid), Zea mays (maize), and Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean). Dose-response curves obtained in the laboratory tests were used to estimate the EC50 values for each species. Among invertebrates, the highest sensitivity to AcPb was observed for E. crypticus in the TAS (EC50 = 29.8 mg AcPb kg-1), whereas for E. andrei and F. candida the highest sensitivity was observed in the Oxisol (EC50 = 141.9 and 1835 mg AcPb kg-1, respectively). Folsomia candida was the least sensitive invertebrate species to AcPb in all soils. Among plant species, Z. mays was less sensitive (EC50 = 1527.5 mg AcPb kg-1) than P. vulgaris (EC50 = 560.5 mg AcPb kg-1) in the Oxisol. The present study evidenced that the toxicity of AcPb should not be attributed uniquely to the presence of Pb, as the treatment containing uniquely Ac provoked the same toxicity as the highest dose of AcPb.
