Abstract Climate change is increasing species extinction risk. The ability of a species to cope with climate change can be quantified by projecting distribution models and by estimating the risk of non-adaptedness using genomic data. The Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest in Tropical South America are increasingly threatened by habitat loss and anthropogenic climate change. This work aims to evaluate the ecological and genomic vulnerability of Plathymenia taxa and its lineages, P. reticulata, a Cerrado species, and P. foliolosa, an Atlantic Forest species, to determine their current and future habitat suitability and the mismatch between current local adaptation with the expected climate changes. The species distribution models predicted a high range loss for the Plathymenia lineages. The genotype-environment association analyses showed that the Plathymenia lineages have populations adapted to different precipitation and temperature seasonality regimes. The genomic offset analyses predict a mismatch between local adaptations and future climate for the Plathymenia indicating a high risk of non-adaptedness, especially in the pessimistic scenario. Our results show an elevated extinction risk of the species due to climate change. We suggest reevaluating the extinction risk and management of the Plathymenia species separately based on their differences in vulnerability to climate change.

Fermentation losses and aerobic stability of elephant grass silages with inclusion of 4 levels of Parkia platycephala pod meal (PP) (0, 10, 20 and 30 %) and 2 levels of urea (0 and 1.5 %) on as-fed basis were evaluated. The silages were analyzed for gas and effluent losses, dry matter recovery (DMR), pH and aerobic stability (pH and temperature) to determine effects of interactions between levels of urea and PP on gas losses, dry matter recovery, temperature and pH of the silages. The combination of urea and PP increased gas losses and reduced the DMR. PP reduced effluent losses and urea increased aerobic stability of the silages. pH values decreased with inclusion of PP and increased with use of urea. Silages containing 20 and 30 % PP showed greater stability over time, especially when associated with urea. PP with urea were effective in reducing effluent losses, maintaining DMR and allowing higher aerobic stability, with stability rupture from 40 h with the inclusion of 20 % of PP in elephant grass silages.

Abstract Alterations of the glycosylation machinery are common events in cancer, leading to the synthesis of aberrant glycan structures by tumor cells. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a modulatory role in cancer communication and progression, and interestingly, several tumor‐associated glycans have already been identified in cancer EVs. Nevertheless, the impact of 3D tumor architecture in the selective packaging of cellular glycans into EVs has never been addressed. In this work, the capacity of gastric cancer cell lines with differential glycosylation is evaluated in producing and releasing EVs when cultured under conventional 2D monolayer or in 3D culture conditions. Furthermore, the proteomic content is identified and specific glycans are studied in the EVs produced by these cells, upon differential spatial organization. Here, it is observed that although the proteome of the analyzed EVs is mostly conserved, an EV differential packaging of specific proteins and glycans is found. In addition, protein–protein interaction and pathway analysis reveal individual signatures on the EVs released by 2D‐ and 3D‐cultured cells, suggesting distinct biological functions. These protein signatures also show a correlation with clinical data. Overall, this data highlight the importance of tumor cellular architecture when assessing the cancer‐EV cargo and its biological role.

To gain insights into the forage morphological and anatomical characteristics in a silvopastoral system (SPS) with Bolsa de Pastor (Zeyheria tuberculosa) and palisadegrass ‘Marandu’ (Urochloa brizantha) monoculture (MONO). The SPS was established through natural regeneration of the tree species. Treatments were a SPS and MONO distributed in a completely randomized design with six replicates and repeated measures were the harvest periods. Response variables were morpho-physiological and anatomical characteristicss: green: dead material ratio, leaf blade: stem+sheath ratio, leaf area index, chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations, proportions of non-lignified and achlorophyllous areas, lignified areas in stems, proportions of non-lignified and achlorophyllous areas, lignified and chlorophyllous areas in leaves, as well as cell length in longitudinal section of stem. Morpho-physiological patterns were altered (p < 0.05) under natural shading conditions due to higher photosynthetic efficiency in the SPS. There was no effect (p > 0.05) of the systems on anatomical patterns, proportions of non-lignified and achlorophyllous, lignified and chlorophyllous tissues, these proportions were influenced only by the periods of the year, both for stems and leaves. Cells of the internodes of the grasses of the studied systems had the same length. The SPS alters morpho-physiological characteristics of palisadegrass and increases the concentration of chlorophyll a and b.

As principais causas do afastamento dos cavalos atletas das atividades esportivas estão relacionadas com injurias que afetam o sistema locomotor, fato esse que, lesões locomotoras afastam mais animais do esporte quando comparado a alterações gástricas ou respiratórias. E nesse aparelho todas as estruturas como: ossos, tendões, articulações, estão sujeitas a sofrerem algum tipo de lesão, podendo acarretar em uma claudicação que por sua vez pode estar associada a diversos fatores como disfunções metabólicas, processos infecciosos, traumas externos ou alteração genética. Dentre as lesões locomotoras, as luxações são comuns e deve-se ter cuidado já que apresentam grande potencial degenerativo para a articulação. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo relatar um caso de um potro macho, mestiço, de aproximadamente quinze dias de vida com suspeita de luxação, onde foi confirmado através de exames de imagem o diagnóstico definitivo de luxação da articulação tarso metatársica. No entanto, mesmo com o tratamento de suporte com antibióticos, anti-inflamatórios, limpeza da lesão e bandagem, o animal continuou a definhar e perder peso por não conseguir se alimentar devido à evolução da septicemia, o que acarretou a um quadro de artrite séptica degenerativa o que levou a equipe médica optar após autorização do proprietário pela eutanásia do animal. Portanto o atendimento e diagnóstico precoce são de grande importância para o sucesso do tratamento evitando assim complicações posteriores e possível morte do animal.

ABSTRACT Species distribution modeling (SDM) studies of aquatic macrophytes are still attached to methodological paradigms focused on terrestrial plants, such as the use of bioclimatic layers. Our goal was to evaluate the applicability of this paradigm based on a SDM study of Egeria densa, Pontederia crassipes, and Salvinia auriculata in the São Francisco river, Brazil. We compared performances of optimizations of computed models using AUC and TSS with distribution records of these species and bioclimatic layers, or limnological layers generated from the interpolation of data obtained in the field. We calculated models using six algorithms. The models calculated using layers of limnological variables had higher performances than did those calculated using layers of bioclimatic variables, except when the Maximum Entropy Default algorithm was used. We attribute these results to the specificities of the data obtained to develop the limnological layers, such as observations obtained in different habitats of the river and during different hydrologic periods. We conclude that the use of bioclimatic layers, a methodological paradigm traditionally used for SDM of aquatic macrophytes, can be questionable for some situations, such as in investigations at local and regional scales.

Objetivou-se com esse trabalho descrever um caso de acrobustite, caracterizada pela inflamação da extremidade do prepúcio em touros, causando infertilidade, perdas reprodutivas e econômicas. É considerada como uma das principais patologias do aparelho reprodutivo de touros zebuínos, tendo em vista suas características anatômicas e morfológicas. Este estudo descreve um caso de acrobustite diagnosticada em um touro Nelore. No exame clínico, observou-se aumento de volume e tamanho no prepúcio, com consistência firme à palpação com formação de tecido granulomatoso, estenose do óstio prepucial, extremidade do pênis voltada caudaumente e com impossibilidade de exposição do pênis. O tratamento escolhido foi à a postoplastia, com amputação parcial da porção prepucial acometida. Utilizando-se no pós-operatório limpeza da ferida, ducha com água fria, antibioticoterapia a base de penicilina associada com Piroxicam, pomada cicatrizante e Bactrovet Prata. Dessa forma, o procedimento cirúrgico foi executado com êxito obtendo uma rápida recuperação do animal, permitindo com que o mesmo retornasse a vida reprodutiva 60 dias após o procedimento cirúrgico.

In multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock (MCDHF) calculations, there is a strong coupling between the localization of the orbital set and the configuration state function (CSF) expansion used to determine it. Furthermore, it is well known that an orbital set resulting from calculations, including CSFs describing core–core correlation and other effects, which aims to lower the weighted energies of a number of targeted states as much as possible, may be inadequate for building CSFs that account for correlation effects that are energetically unimportant but decisive for computed properties, e.g., hyperfine structures or transition rates. This inadequacy can be traced in irregular or oscillating convergence patterns of the computed properties as functions of the increasing orbital set. In order to alleviate the above problems, we propose a procedure in which the orbital set is obtained by merging several separately optimized, and mutually non-orthogonal, orbital sets. This computational strategy preserves the advantages of capturing electron correlation on the total energy through the variational MCDHF method and allows to target efficiently the correlation effects on the considered property. The orbital sets that are merged are successively orthogonalized against each other to retain orthonormality. The merged orbital set is used to build CSFs that efficiently lower the energy and also adequately account for the correlation effects that are important for the property. We apply the procedure to compute the hyperfine structure constants for the 1s22s2S1/2 and 1s22p2P1/2,3/2o states in 7Li and show that it leads to considerably improved convergence patterns with respect to the increasing orbital set compared to standard calculations based on a single orbital set, energy-optimized in the variational procedure. The perspectives of the new procedure are discussed in a broader context in the summary.

Identifying the environmental factors that shape intraspecific genetic and phenotypic diversity of species can provide insights into the processes that generate and maintain divergence in highly diverse biomes such as the savannas of the Neotropics. Here, we sampled Qualea grandiflora, the most widely distributed tree species in the Cerrado, a large Neotropical savanna. We analyzed genetic variation with microsatellite markers in 23 populations (418 individuals) and phenotypic variation of 10 metamer traits (internode, petiole and corresponding leaf lamina) in 36 populations (744 individuals). To evaluate the role of geography, soil, climate, and wind speed in shaping the divergence of genetic and phenotypic traits among populations, we used Generalized Dissimilarity Modelling. We also used multiple regressions to further investigate the contributions of those environmental factors on leaf trait diversity. We found high genetic diversity, which was geographically structured. Geographic distance was the main factor shaping genetic divergence in Qualea grandiflora, reflecting isolation by distance. Genetic structure was more related to past climatic changes than to the current climate. We also found high metamer trait variation, which seemed largely influenced by precipitation, soil bulk density and wind speed during the period of metamer development. The high degree of metamer trait variation seems to be due to both, phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation to different environmental conditions, and may explain the success of the species in occupying all the Cerrado biome.

Abstract Objectives This study aims to identify European radiographers’ challenges in clinical performance in mammography and the main areas of mammography that require more and better training. Methods An extensive search was performed to identify relevant studies focused on clinical practice, education and training in mammography published between January 2010 and December 2015 in the English language. The data were analysed by using deductive thematic analysis. Results A total of 27 full text articles were read, evaluating their quality. Sixteen articles out of 27 were finally selected for this integrative review. The main challenges of radiographers’ mammography education/training can be divided into three groups: training needs, challenges related to radiographers, and challenges related to the organization of education. The most common challenges of clinical performance in mammography among European radiographers involved technical performance, the quality of practices, and patient-centeredness. Conclusions The introduction of harmonized mammography guidelines across Europe may serve as an evidence-based tool to be implemented in practice and education. However, the variability in human and material resources as well as the different cultural contexts should be considered during this process. Teaching Points • Radiographers’ awareness of their professional identity and enhancing multiprofessional cooperation in mammography. • Radiographers’ responsibilities regarding image quality (IQ) and optimal breast imaging performance. • Patient-centred mammography services focusing on the psychosocial needs of the patient. • Challenges: positioning, QC-testing, IQ-assessment, optimization of breast compression, communication, teamwork, and patient-centred care. • Introduction of evidence-based guidelines in Europe to harmonize mammography practice and education.

In natural conditions biotic and abiotic factors interact, synergistically affecting seed germination. In this study, we experimentally simulated natural conditions that occur during seed dispersal that can affect the germination of Copaifera langsdorffii. Specifically we evaluated the effect of aril removal by different dispersal agents (birds and ants) and fire on germination. The seeds were submitted to the following treatments: Control (seeds placed to germinate with aril intact); Acid (simulation of passage through the digestive tract of a bird); Aril removal (simulation of aril removed by ants); Fire (seeds exposed to fire). Castor produces racemes primary, secondary, tertiary, among others, whose contributions to the overall productivity differ. In this context, the aim was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics and to deter-mine the influence of the order of racemes and nutrient sources on yield of castor bean. Thus, under field con-ditions, in the municipality of Remigio, Paraíba State, an experiment with BRS Nordestina cultivar was carried out in randomized blocks design arranged in 5 (different sources of organic manure: without organic manure, compost, compost enriched with rock powders and manure and mineral complete) x 4 (orders of racemes pri-mary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary) factorial experiment, with four replications. During the experiment, plant height and insertion of racemes were evaluated, length and number of racemes, early blooming and matu-ration of racemes. After harvesting, the following variables were determined: mass of racemes, number of grains per plant, yield, weight of hundred grains, length and width of the grains and the contribution of differ-ent orders of racemes in total yield. The growth of castor bean increased with the fertilizing, especially for or-ganic compounds. The first inflorescences were emitted in castor bean plants fertilized organically. The mass of racemes, the number of grains per plant and productivity were higher in racemes of secondary and tertiary orders. The length and width of the grains was higher in primary racemes. The highest yields were obtained with the use of organic sources.

A camada de lastro é considerada como um dos mais importantes elementos de um perfil estrutural ferroviário, exercendo um papel singular no comportamento mecânico deste. Devido ao tráfego e aos procedimentos de manutenção, ao longo do tempo, o lastro tende a se degradar. O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar a evolução da degradação do lastro por meio de parâmetros como granulometria, Coeficiente de Não Uniformi­dade (CNU), forma e seus distintos modos de degradação. Adicionalmente, apresenta-se uma visão geral referente à deterioração do lastro e, dentro deste contexto, dois estudos baseados em ensaios laboratoriais de degradação por abrasão, em conjunto com um procedimento que considera imagens dos grãos e o cisalhamento destes. De maneira geral, este artigo mostra diferentes modos de degradação e uma adequada representação qualitativa da evolução da degradação dos grãos através dos métodos utilizados baseados em ensaio de abrasão com obtenção de imagens e de cisalha­mento.

The survival of plants in epiphytic environments depends on vegetative adaptations capable to defraud different stresses. Based on the structural diversity of the Orchidaceae, the current study has the objective of relating the anatomical structure of Dichaea cogniauxiana and Epidendrum secundum with the distinct environments where they live. It was expected that, despite structural similarities as strategies for resource acquisition, some peculiar variations related to the distinct light microenvironments (inside or in the edge of the nebular forest, near to “campo rupestre” area) might be found. Leaves and roots of both species were collected in a nebular forest located at a “campo rupestre” area at Serra da Piedade, Brazil), in January and February 2005. D. cogniauxiana is adhered to trunks, in sites with high atmospheric humidity and shaded, while E. secundum is located at the edge of the nebular forest, in more luminous sites. The leaves of E. secundum had thicker cuticle and higher number of stomata per area than those of D. cogniauxiana, characteristics coherent with their distinct pattern of exhibition to sun light. The suprastomatic chambers formed by the thicker cuticle may function as a barrier of resistance to water evaporation. The succulence of the leaves of E. secundum propitiates organic acids storage at night, and the storage of starch may be involved in PEP-carboxylase metabolism, both propitiating CAM mechanism. Roots with larger number of cell layers of the velamen, and specialized thick walled cortical cells (both in E. secundum) help water absorption and indicate better adaptation to an environment with intense solar radiation and a probable higher water deficit. The remarkable cell wall thickening of E. secundum exodermis can confer more efficient protection against the excess of transpiration at the border of the nebular forest. On the other hand, besides D. cogniauxiana be epiphyte, it is in a low position - in a shaded environment and with high relative humidity. Its thin thickened velamen permits the entrance of the low available light, and photosynthesis, producing oxygen and helping to avoid hypoxia condition. As features registered for D. cogniauxiana and E. secundum roots, we can depict the velamen, distinct exodermis and endodermis, and specialized thick walled cortical cells as characteristic of epiphytic plants.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho descrever os períodos de formação de folhas novas, abscisão foliar, inflorescência e maturação dos frutos do pinhão-manso, Jatropha curcas L., bem como, determinar algumas variáveis de produção desta espécie em dois ciclos de cultivo adubada com diferentes fontes de adubação no município de Remígio-PB. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por diferentes fontes de adubação. Durante os meses de maio de 2007 a novembro de 2009 fez-se avaliações mensais dos eventos fenológicos e de produção do pinhão-manso. Independente do tratamento utilizado, a formação de folhas novas foi observada durante o período chuvoso e a abscisão foliar durante os meses mais frios e os de maior estiagem. A floração, no primeiro ciclo de cultivo, iniciou-se com o fim da estação chuvosa com a utilização do composto orgânico II (F3), já no segundo ciclo, as primeiras inflorescências foram observadas no início da estação chuvosa nas plantas adubadas com composto orgânico I (F2) e esterco de curral (F5). Em todos os tratamentos o tempo verificado entre a emissão das inflorescências até a maturação fisiológicas dos frutos foi de aproximadamente 120 dias. Na primeira colheita, as fontes de adubação não diferiram entre si em nenhuma variável de produção, entretanto, na segunda colheita, além de haver um aumento na produção, o composto orgânico I (F2) e o esterco de curral (F5) foram os que promoveram os melhores resultados.The objective of this work was to describe the periods of new-leaf formation, leaf abscission, the flowering and fuit-maturity of jatropha, Jatropha curcas L., as well as to determine some production variables of this species, in two crop cycles, fertilized with different sources of nutrient, in the municipality of Remígio, in the state of Paraíba. A randomized block design with five treatments and four replications was used. The treatments consisted of different sources of fertilization. During the months of May, 2007 to November, 2009 monthly evaluations of phenological events and the production of jatropha were made. Regardless of the treatment used, formation of new leaves was observed during the rainy season, and leaf abscission during both the colder and dryer months. Flowering in the first crop cycle began with the end of the rainy season, when using the organic compound II (F3), whereas in the second cycle, the first instances of inflorescence were observed at the start of the rainy season in those plants fertilized with the organic compound I (F2) and manure (F5). In all treatments the time verified between the instances of inflorescence and the physiological maturity of the fruit was approximately 120 days. For the first harvest, the sources of fertilizer did not produce any differences for any of the production variables, however, for the second harvest, besides there being an increase in production, the organic compound I (F2) and manure (F5) were those which gave the best results.

O cultivo do tomateiro (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill) ocupa o segundo lugar entre as culturas oleráceas no Brasil (IBGE, 2008, GRAVENA, 1998). Com a expansão da cultura, devido suas qualidades organolépticas, fonte natural de vitaminas, sais minerais e outros metabólitos entre eles o licopeno, os problemas fitossanitários vêm-se agravando. Assim é que, desde a semeadura até a colheita, grande número de pragas e doenças ocorre na cultura do tomateiro. Considerando-se a carência de estudos voltados para utilização de plantas com ação inseticidas e urina de vaca, esse trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar suas eficiências no controle de N. elegantalis e Bemisia sp na cultura do tomate. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida em área experimental da Escola Agrícola “Assis Chateaubriand” e no Núcleo de Manejo de Pragas pertencentes a Universidade Estadual da Paraíba. Resultados: Constatou-se que a associação dos produtos químicos com dipel apresentou maior eficiência no controle para N. elegantalise Bemisia na fase pupal de 95 e 93%, respectivamente em relação aos demais produtos testados. Dentre os tratamentos alternativos a melhor eficiência para N. elegantalis foi obtida com extrato de faveleira (53,6%) e extrato de óleo de neem (43,9%), já para a fase pulpal da Bemisia o extrato de óleo de neem apresentou 66,3% de eficiência, em aplicações a cada 4 dias. The Atlantic Forest is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and considered a hotspot of biodiversity conservation. Dalbergia nigra (Fabaceae) is a tree endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, and has become threatened due to overexploitation of its valuable timber. In the present study, we analyzed the genetic diversity and fine-scale spatial genetic structure of D. nigra in an area of primary forest of a large reserve. All adult individuals (N = 112) were sampled in a 9.3 ha plot, and genotyped for microsatellite loci. Our results indicated high diversity with a mean of 8.6 alleles per locus, and expected heterozygosity equal to 0.74. The co-ancestry coefficients were significant for distances among trees up to 80 m. The Sp value was equal to 0.017 and indirect estimates of gene dispersal distances ranged from 89 to 144 m. No strong evidence of bottleneck or effects of human-disturbance was found. This study highlights that long-term efforts to protect a large area of Atlantic Forest have been effective towards maintaining the genetic diversity of D. nigra. The results of this study are important towards providing a guide for seed collection for ex-situ conservation and reforestation programmes of this threatened species.

O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar a influência da eliminação da gema apical do rizoma e de doses de nitrogênio e boro, sobre a produção e o crescimento de mudas de bananeira. O experimento foi realizado no Centro de Formação de Tecnólogos da UFPB. O delineamento foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro blocos e nove plantas matrizes por parcela, sendo duas plantas úteis. Os fatores avaliados foram doses de N (0 a 240 g/planta) e de B (0 a 2,2 g/planta) combinados com a matriz experimental Composto Central de Box, originando nove combinações, arranjados fatorialmente com e sem eliminação da gema apical da planta matriz. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e de regressão. A supressão do pseudocaule da planta principal, com a eliminação da gema apical do rizoma aumentou o número de perfilhos, com maior crescimento, exceto do diâmetro do rizoma, o qual diminuiu. Os teores foliares de clorofila total e de B também foram diminuídos, nos perfilhos das bananeiras amputadas. Para a produção de mudas da bananeira ‘Pacovan’, recomenda-se a supressão do pseudocaule da planta principal, com eliminação da gema apical do rizoma e aplicação do N.The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of the removal in the pseudostem with elimination of the meristem apical of the rhizome and doses of nitrogen and boron, about the production and growth of banana suckers. The experiment was carried out at Centro de Formação de Tecnólogos - UFPB, State of Paraíba. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with four replications and nine mother plants for experimental unit, being two useful plants. The evaluated valued factors were doses of N (0 to 240 g plant-1) and of B (0 to 240 g plant-1) combined in agreement with the experimental matrix ‘Central Composite’, originating nine combinations, which were arranged factorially with suppression and without suppression of the pseudostem of the mother plant. The data were submitted the variance analysis and of regression. The suppression in the pseudostem of the mother plant with elimination of the apical meristem of the rhizome increased the sucker number, with larger growth, except of the diameter of the rhizome which it reduced. In the plants with suppression, it reduced the sucker number which presented smaller growth. On the other hand, it increased the content of total chlorophyll. For the production of ‘Pacovan’ banana suckers, is recommended the suppression in the pseudostem of the mother plant with elimination of the meristem apical of the rhizome and the application of the N.

Este estudo objetivou comparar características biométricas de frutos e sementes e o efeito de diferentes escarificações, temperaturas e luz na germinação de Plathymenia reticulata Benth. e Plathymenia foliolosa Benth. Foram registrados comprimento, largura, espessura, massa da matéria seca e fresca de frutos (n = 100) e sementes (n = 100) de cada espécie. Os diferentes tratamentos foram escarificações mecânica e química e temperaturas (fotoperíodo/nictoperíodo) de 20, 30 e 35/15 °C (12/12 e 0/24) e 25 e 35 °C (12/12). Os frutos de P. foliolosa mostraram-se mais largos, espessos e pesados e as sementes, mais compridas e espessas do que as de P. reticulata. As sementes de ambas as espécies não apresentaram fotoblastismo. A escarificação ácida não aumentou significativamente a germinabilidade das sementes em relação ao grupo-controle, enquanto a escarificação mecânica incrementou significativamente a germinabilidade apenas de P. foliolosa. As germinabilidades a 25 °C das sementes de P. reticulata intactas, escarificadas com ácido e lixa foram, respectivamente, de 55%, 60% e 89%. Para as sementes de P. foliolosa esses valores foram 48%, 37,5% e 83%, respectivamente.Esses resultados apontam limitações na germinação de P. foliolosa impostas pelo tegumento, entretanto o efeito deste restringindo a germinação das sementes intactas decresceu com a elevação da temperatura.This study aimed to compare the biometry of fruits and seeds, as well as the effect of different scarification, temperature and light conditions on the germination of Plathymenia reticulata Benth. and Plathymenia foliolosa Benth. We measured the length, width, thickness, and fresh mass of fruits (n= 100) and seeds (n= 100) of each specie. The different treatments were mechanic and acid scarification, temperatures (photoperiod/nictoperiod) of 20, 30 and 35/15 °C (12/12 and 0/24) and 25 and 35 °C (12/12). P. foliolosa fruits were wider, thickener and heavier. Its seeds are longer and thicker than those of P. reticulata. Seeds of both species were not photosensitive. Acid scarification did not increase significantly the percentage of seed germination of both species, but mechanic scarification increased significantly the percentage of seed germination for P. foliolosa. The percentage of germination at 25 °C of intact seeds of P. reticulata, scarified with acid and with sandpaper was, respectively, 55%, 60% and 89%. For seeds of P. foliolosa values obtained were, respectively, 48%, 37.5% and 83%. These results indicate limitations of germination of P. foliolosa imposed by the tegument but the effect of tegument restringing the germination of intact seeds decrease with the increase of temperature.

Although gall diversity in the Neotropical region is immense, comparative studies on the phenology of host plants and their galls are scarce. Gall systems generally require high levels of phenological synchrony between the associated organisms. The relationships between the phenology of two leaf galls induced by an unidentified Cecidomyiidae in Aspidosperma spruceanum Benth. ex Müell. Arg. and by Pseudophacopteron sp. in A. australe Müell. Arg. were investigated. The investigation was performed on ten individuals per species in 15-day intervals taking into consideration the percentage of galled leaves. In a one-year study, three distinct phenophases for the leaf galls and four phenophases for host plants were observed. The maximum percentage of leaf galls (80%) on A. australe occurred just after the peak of leaf sprouting. In A. spruceanum, the percentage of leaf galls was always over 50%, which can be related to continuous leaf production and gall induction in this species. In both species, developing galls were observed over the entire year, indicating multivoltinism. The ability to induce galls at young and mature sites seems to be a good strategy for galling species survivorship.Embora a diversidade de galhas na região neotropical seja grande, poucos são os estudos fenológicos comparando a fenologia das espécies hospedeiras com aquela das galhas. O desenvolvimento de galhas geralmente requer alta sincronia fenológica entre os organismos associados. A relação entre a fenologia de duas galhas foliares induzidas por um Cecidomyiidae e Aspidosperma spruceanum Benth. ex Müell. Arg. e de uma espécie de Pseudophacopteron sp. e A. australe Müell. Arg. foram investigadas. O trabalho foi realizado em dez indivíduos de cada espécie em intervalos quinzenais, levando em consideração a percentagem de folhas galhadas. Durante um ano, foram observadas três fenofases distintas para as galhas foliares e quatro fenofases para a hospedeira. A maior percentagem de folhas galhadas em A. australe (80%) ocorreu após o pico de brotação, com uma boa correlação entre a brotação e a indução de novas galhas. Em A. spruceanum, a percentagem de folhas galhadas foi sempre acima de 50%, o que pode ser relacionado à contínua produção de folhas e indução das galhas nesta espécie. Em ambas as espécies, as galhas em desenvolvimento foram observadas durante todo o ano, indicando multivoltinismo. A capacidade de induzir galhas em tecidos jovens e maduros parece ser uma boa estratégia para a sobrevivência destes galhadores.

Foi conduzido no Centro de Ciências Agrárias da Universidade Federal da Paraíba, em casa-de-vegetação, um experimento utilizando-se amostras de dois solos do Município de Mamanguape, Estado da Paraíba (Areias Quartzosas Distróficas - AOd e Podzólico Vermelho Amarelo Distrófico - PVd), cultivados intensamente com a cultura do abacaxi, objetivando caracterizar os nutrientes limitantes, através da diagnose por subtração, usando o sorgo granífero (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. cv. ICAPAL), como planta indicadora. O experimento foi composto por quartorze tratamentos, por solo, sendo uma testemunha absoluta, um com todos os nutrientes (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo e Zn) e os demais tratamentos com todos os nutrientes menos o elemento em estudo. Os resultados obtidos em função da produção de matéria seca da parte aérea, mostraram que no solo AOd foram limitantes, em ordem decrescente, os seguintes nutrientes: fósforo, nitrogênio, potássio, zinco e cálcio,e no PVd, fósforo, nitrogênio, potássio e cálcio. Para maior eficiência dos nutrientes a serem aplicados nesses solos, recomenda-se a prática da calagem.

Brazil is the second world producer of banana, however, the expansion of the banana crop has many difficulties, as the lack of suckers in amount and quality, necessary for implantation of new banana plantations. The objective of this research work was to evaluate the influence of the pseudostem pruning with elimination of the apical meristem of the rhizome and of doses of nitrogen and boron on the production and growth of banana suckers. The experiment was carried out at Centro de Formação de Tecnólogos - UFPB, state of Paraíba. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four blocks and nine mother plants by experimental unit, being two useful plants. The evaluated factors were doses of N (0 to 240 g plant-1) and of B (0 to 2,2 g plant-1) combined by the use of the experimental matrix ‘Central Composite’, originating nine treatments, applied with pruning and without pruning of the mother plant pseudostem. The data were submitted to the variance analysis and regression. In the plants with pruning, it was reduced the sucker number, which presented smaller growth, on the other hand, it increased the concentration of total chlorophyll. For the production of 'Pacovan' banana suckers, it is recommended the pruning of the mother plant pseudostem with elimination of the rhizome apical meristem and the application of N. O Brasil é o segundo maior produtor mundial de banana, entretanto, a expansão da bananicultura encontra uma série de entraves, dentre os quais a falta de mudas em quantidade e qualidade, necessárias para implantação de novos bananais. O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar a influência da poda no pseudocaule com eliminação da gema apical do rizoma e de doses de nitrogênio e boro sobre a produção e o crescimento de mudas de bananeira. O experimento foi realizado no Centro de Formação de Tecnólogos da UFPB. O delineamento foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro blocos e nove plantas matrizes por parcela, sendo duas plantas úteis. Os fatores avaliados foram doses de N (0 a 240 g planta-1) e de B (0 a 2,2 g planta-1) combinados mediante a matriz experimental Composto Central de Box, originando nove tratamentos, aplicados com poda e sem poda no pseudocaule da planta matriz. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e de regressão. A poda do pseudocaule da planta principal, com a eliminação da gema apical do rizoma aumentou o número de perfilhos, com maior crescimento, exceto do diâmetro do rizoma, o qual diminuiu. Os teores foliares de clorofila total e de B também foram diminuídos nos perfilhos das bananeiras podadas. Para a produção de mudas da bananeira ‘Pacovan’, recomenda-se poda do pseudocaule da planta principal, com eliminação da gema apical do rizoma e aplicação de N.

Os diversos cânones da poesia brasileira não contemplam a poesia negrobrasileira como deveria ser. Sendo o poeta Luiz Gama ainda hoje menosprezado, em comparação com Castro Alves, é necessário, pois, colocá-lo no seu verdadeiro lugar de significação. Porém, esse esforço deve servir também para compreender que Gama, na sua poesia, ainda mostra alguma conformidade com certos preconceitos rácicos próprios do século XIX e que se encontram, por exemplo, em poetas angolanos. Já o poeta Solano Trindade, devido à sua formação ideologicamente comprometida com os pobres e miseráveis da sociedade, trata o negro como um ser social, econômico e cultural de corpointeiro, concepção aprofundada por Cuti, que, finalmente, deixa de apelidar o mestiço de mulato, segundo a conformidade com o Movimento Negro. Por outro lado, é um poeta da modernidade mais avançada, quer formalmente, quer atingindo o âmago do subconsciente negro, ao versar o seu sofrimento íntimo, de modo inédito. Brazilian poetry’s several literary canons fail to fully investigate Brazilian Black Poetry as it should be. In spite of the fact that the poet Luiz Gama is currently not in the limelight when compared to Castro Alves, the replacing of his real place of significance is actually worthwhile. This effort should also be needed to understand that Gama in his poetry shows a type of conformity with certain racial bias common in the 19th century as, for example, in the poetry of Angola. On the other hand, due to his ideologically committed ideology with the poor and destitute in society, the poet Solano Trindade deals with the Negro as a social, economical and cultural person. This concept is partook by Cuti who, at long last, do not call the half-breed as ‘mulato’, following orientations of the Negro Movement. On the other hand, he is formally poet featuring themost advanced modernity as he reaches the heart of the Negro subconscious in his singing of deep personal suffering in the most unusual manner.

A demanda nutricional do abacaxizeiro é alta em relação à de outras culturas e depende do cultivar, do peso do fruto, do destino da produção, do sistema e da densidade de plantio, e a variação desses fatores nem sempre está contemplada nas tabelas de adubação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi propor um Sistema de Recomendação de Fertilizantes e Corretivos para a Cultura do Abacaxi (FERTCALC-Abacaxi), elaborado a partir da sistematização e modelagem de informações de literatura e do conhecimento atual sobre adubação e nutrição mineral da cultura. O FERTCALC-Abacaxi baseia-se no método do balanço nutricional e está subdividido em dois subsistemas: o subsistema requerimento, que contempla a demanda pela planta, considerando a eficiência de recuperação dos nutrientes aplicados e uma dose para atender o critério de "sustentabilidade", e o subsistema suprimento, que compreende a oferta de nutrientes pela calagem, pelo solo, pela matéria orgânica e pelos resíduos orgânicos. Simulações realizadas com o FERTCALC-Abacaxi mostraram que o Sistema recomenda maiores doses para o cultivar Pérola em relação ao Smooth Cayenne, para plantios mais adensados e para obtenção de frutos mais pesados. Diferentemente das tabelas, as doses variaram de forma contínua com a produtividade esperada e com o teor de nutrientes no solo, sendo maiores no primeiro em relação ao segundo cultivo. Por contemplar na sua estrutura maior número de fatores envolvidos na resposta da cultura à adubação, a exemplo da produtividade esperada, do cultivar, do peso do fruto, do sistema e da densidade de plantio, e considerar a contribuição dos resíduos orgânicos do cultivo anterior, o FERTCALC-Abacaxi constitui-se numa alternativa mais versátil para recomendar doses de fertilizantes e corretivos para o abacaxizeiro, embora precise ser aperfeiçoado em futuras versões e ter seu desempenho avaliado em condições práticas.The nutritional demand of pineapple plants is higher than for other crops and IT depends on cultivar, fruit weight, production destination and planting density and cultivation system. However, the variation in these factors is not always taken into account in fertilization tables. The purpose of this study was to propose a fertilizer and lime recommendation system for pineapple designated FERTCALC-Abacaxi, based on systematization and modeling of literature data and the current knowledge concerning fertilization and mineral nutrition of the crop. FERTCALC-Abacaxi is based on the nutritional balance method and is divided into two subsystems: the requirement subsystem that contemplates the plant demand, considering the efficiency of recovery of the applied nutrients and a dose to meet the requirement "sustainability"; and the supply subsystem that comprises the nutrient supply by liming, soil, organic matter, and by organic residues. Simulations with FERTCALC-Abacaxi showed that the System recommends higher doses for the Pérola cv., than for Smooth Cayenne, for denser planting systems and to obtain heavier fruits; and differently from the tables, it varied continuously with the expected productivity and soil nutrient contents, being higher in the first than in the second growing cycle. In view of the higher number of factors taken into consideration that reflect the response of the crop to fertilization, for example the expected yield, cultivar, fruit weight, planting density and system, besides taking into account the contribution of organic residues from the previous cycle, the FERTCALC- Abacaxi represents a more versatile alternative for fertilizer and lime recommendation for the pineapple crop. However, improvements in future versions of the System as well as its validation under practical conditions are necessary.

The Estação Ecológica de Jataí comprises one of the largest mesophytic semideciduous forest and savanna remnants in the state of São Paulo. However, anuran surveys on this site have not been registered in the literature. As result of an exploratory survey conducted in water bodies in the mesophytic semideciduous forest and surroundings in December 2006, we recorded 21 anuran species belonging to five families and 10 genera. These findings contribute to the knowledge of the anuran fauna associated to the mesophytic semideciduous forest of São Paulo state, Brazil.

O presente trabalho objetivou caracterizar a fenologia reprodutiva das espécies de Bromeliaceae da Serra da Piedade. Das dezoito espécies estudadas, 72% floresceram na estação chuvosa e 28% na estação seca. Observou-se que a floração das bromélias ao longo do gradiente altitudinal da Serra da Piedade foi seqüencial e influenciada pela sazonalidade das chuvas. A maioria das espécies que ocorrem no habitat xérico pedregoso (acima de 1.400 m de altitude) apresentou a floração na estação chuvosa, enquanto que três das cinco espécies que ocorrem no ambiente mésico florestal (abaixo de 1.300 m de altitude) floresceram na estação seca. Espécies simpátricas com características florais semelhantes, como Tillandsia stricta, T. gardneri, Vriesea crassa e V. citrina, também apresentaram floração seqüencial. A dispersão das espécies com sementes aladas (Pitcairnoideae) e plumosas (Tillandsioideae) ocorreu na estação seca, exceto para Dyckia saxatilis e Racinaea aerisincola. Foi observada assincronia na maturação dos frutos e dispersão das sementes entre as bromélias zoocóricas. É provável que essas condições permitam às espécies de bromélias da Serra da Piedade evitar a sobreposição do uso de animais vetores de pólen e de sementes.This work characterizes the phenology of Bromeliaceae species at Serra da Piedade. Of the i8 species studied, 72% flowered in the rainy season and 28% in the dry season. We observed sequential flowering of bromeliads along the entire altitudinal gradient at Serra da Piedade; flowering was also influenced by rainfall seasonality. Most species that occur in the rocky xeric habitat (above 1400 m altitude) flowered during the rainy season, while three of the five species found in the mesic forest (below 1300 m altitude) flowered in the dry season. Sympatric species with similar floral characteristics, such as Tillandsia stricta, T. gardneri, Vriesea citrina and V. crassa, also flowered sequentially. The dispersal of species with winged seeds (Pitcairnoideae) and plumose seeds (Tillandsioideae) occurred in the dry season, except for Dyckia saxatilis and Racinaea aerisincola. Asynchrony was observed in fruit maturation and seed dispersal among zoochorous bromeliads. These conditions probably allow the bromeliad species of Serra da Piedade to avoid use overlap of animal vectors of pollen and seeds.

The emergence of the so-called “European Paradox” shows that increasing Governmental R&D Investment is far from being a ‘panacea’ for stagnant growth. It is worth noting that Governmental R&D Investment does not have a statistically significant impact on employment, indicating the need to assess the trade-offs of policies that could lead to significant increases in government expenditure. Surprisingly, Governmental R&D Employment does not contribute to ‘mass-market’ employment, despite its quite important role in reducing Youth-Unemployment. Despite the negative side-effects of Governmental R&D Employment on both GVA and GDP, University R&D Employment appears to have a quite important role in reducing Unemployment, especially Youth-Unemployment, while it also does not have a downside in terms of economic growth. Technological Capacity enhancement is the most effective instrument for reducing Unemployment and is a policy without any downside regarding sustainable economic development.

A produção de proteínas microbianas sobre a casca de maracujá visando à produção de suplemento protéico para animais é uma alternativa encontrada para o grande desperdício desse resíduo agroindustrial. Através das isotermas de dessorção da casca do maracujá, foi verificado que as condições de umidade inicial para o crescimento de microrganismos neste resíduo por meio da fermentação semi-sólida deverá ser acima de 55% (base úmida) e a faixa de umidade ideal para o armazenamento do resíduo em torno de 5,3% (base úmida).The microbial protein production on passion fruit peel shell as an animal protein supplement production is an alternative found out to avoid the large wastage of agri-industrial residues. Through the desorption isotherms of passion fruit peel, it is verified that for the microorganism growth by solid-state fermentation on this residue, the initial moisture content condition should be above 55% (wet basis). The ideal moisture content range for residue storage is around 5.3% (wet basis).

O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o comportamento germinativo de Bacccharis retusa e Tibouchina multiflora, espécies que ocorrem na vegetação de canga no Quadrilátero Ferrífero de Minas Gerais. Diásporos coletados no município de Barão de Cocais foram colocados para germinar nas temperaturas de 15, 20, 25 e 30 ºC na presença de luz contínua ou no escuro. As sementes mantidas inicialmente no escuro foram posteriormente transferidas para a presença de luz, mantendo-se as mesmas temperaturas. Os diásporos das duas espécies apresentaram comportamento fotoblástico positivo, com germinação inexpressiva no escuro em todas as temperaturas testadas. Na presença de luz contínua as sementes de T. multiflora não apresentaram diferenças na porcentagem final de germinação em todas as temperaturas testadas, mas B. retusa apresentou menor porcentagem final de germinação a 30 ºC. Os diásporos das duas espécies mantidos inicialmente no escuro, germinaram rapidamente após serem transferidos para luz branca contínua. Entretanto, não foi verificado efeito significativo do tempo de permanência no escuro nos valores finais de porcentagem de germinação alcançados a cada temperatura. Esses resultados sugerem que essas duas espécies de canga apresentam potencial para a formação de banco de sementes no solo.The aim of this study was to evaluate the germinative behavior of Bacccharis retusa and Tibouchina multiflora, species that occur in the "canga" vegetation of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero of Minas Gerais. Diaspores collected in the county Barão de Cocais were placed to germinate under the temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30 ºC at continuous light or in darkness condition. The diaspores initially remained under darkness were later transferred to light presence maintaining the same temperatures. Diaspores of both species presented a positive photoblastic behavior, with inexpressive germination under darkness in all tested temperatures. In presence of continuous light, seeds of T. multiflora showed no difference in the percentage of germination in all temperatures, while B. retusa showed lower germination at 30 ºC. Diaspores initially maintained under darkness germinated rapidly after transferred to continuous light. However, no indication of significant effect of the dark period was observed in values of the final germination percentage in each temperature tested. These results suggest that these two "canga" species may have potential to constitute the soil seed bank.

O fogo exerce um papel importante como modelador dos ecossistemas de diversas formações vegetais, especialmente o Cerrado. Sua ação induz a brotação em diversas espécies, muitas vezes formando folhas mais vigorosas e fisiologicamente mais ativas. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho investigou o desempenho fotossintético de folhas jovens e maduras de Vochysia cinnamomea Pohl (Vochysiaceae) em resposta à ação do fogo natural sobre uma área de cerrado rupestre da Serra da Canastra, Minas Gerais, comparando-se; (1) folhas jovens de área queimada e não queimada e (2) folhas jovens e maduras de um mesmo indivíduo. Foram analisadas folhas maduras de indivíduos de área não queimada cuja brotação ocorreu anterior à queimada, e folhas jovens de indivíduos de áreas queimadas e não queimadas cuja brotação ocorreu após a passagem do fogo. Foram coletados e analisados dados relativos às taxas fotossintéticas, rendimento quântico potencial e efetivo, taxa relativa de transporte de elétrons, assimilação líquida de CO2, condutância estomática, transpiração e teores de clorofila. Não houve diferenças significativas entre as folhas jovens da área queimada e da área não queimada em relação aos processos fisiológicos testados. Desta forma não há nenhum tipo de resposta rápida em relação à passagem do fogo. Entretanto, foram encontradas diferenças significativas quando comparadas folhas jovens e maduras. É fato que folhas jovens de V. cinnamomea são estruturalmente distintas de folhas maduras, são mais suculentas e pilosas enquanto as folhas maduras são mais coriáceas, glabras e com cutícula evidente. Estas diferenças estruturais e os estágios fisiológicos de maturação distintos se refletem nas características fisiológicas estudadas nestas folhas que, quando maduras apresentam-se com menor grau de fotoinibição, maior teor de clorofilas e maior assimilação líquida de CO2.

Objetivou-se com esse estudo foi avaliar a influência da fertilização nitrogenada e do sombreamento artificial sobre a produtividade e variáveis bromatológicas da Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. A pastagem foi submetida a quatro doses de adubação (0, 50, 70 e 100 kg de N por aplicação) e a quatro percentuais de sombreamento (0, 47, 53 e 66%) por meio de tela de náilon. A produção de matéria seca teve resposta linear para o sombreamento e a fertilização nitrogenada, onde reduziu com o sombreamento e aumentou com as doses de N. Os valores médios do índice de área foliar e a interceptação luminosa foram superiores ao preconizado no manejo de pastagens. O sombreamento não alterou a altura do dossel e o teor de FDN. Os maiores teores de FDN foram com 100 kg de N e os menores de FDA com 47,5% de sombreamento. O teor de PB decresceu linearmente em função do aumento sombreamento e das doses de N. A produção do capim-marandu responde positivamente ao aumento do N e negativamente ao sombreamento, enquanto que a quantidade e a qualidade da proteína decrescem pela ação de ambos os fatores.

As espécies S. elegans (Bong.) Ruhl. e S. niveus (Kunth.) Ruhl. (Eriocaulaceae) são conhecidas como sempre-vivas e ocorrem nos campos rupestres da Serra do Cipó - MG. Devido a sua utilização como ornamental, ressalta-se a importância dos dados sobre sua germinação e desenvolvimento pós-seminal. As sementes foram colocadas para germinar em câmara de germinação, em condições controladas, e no ambiente de laboratório no claro e no escuro. Para cada tratamento foram utilizadas 4 repetições com 25 sementes em placas de Petri com papel de filtro umedecido. Os resultados mostraram que as sementes de S. elegans e S. niveus são fotoblásticas positivas. As etapas do desenvolvimento pós-seminal são semelhantes para ambas espécies e, na germinação, observa-se a protrusão do eixo embrionário, de onde se desenvolvem primeiramente as folhas e posteriormente as raízes adventícias. O opérculo da semente fica aderido à testa e a raiz primária se degenera ainda no eixo embrionário.The species S. elegans (Bong.) Ruhl. and S. niveus (Kunth.) Ruhl. (Eriocaulaceae) are known in Brazil as star flowers and they grow in the rupestrian fields of Serra do Cipó - MG. They are used for ornamental purposes so data on their germination and postseminal development are important. In this study the seeds were germinated in growth chamber under controled conditions and in the laboratory under light and dark conditions. For each treatment four repetitions of 25 seeds on Petri plates with humid filter paper were used. The results show that the seeds of S. elegans and S. niveus are positive photoblastic. The post-seminal development stages are the same for both species and during the germination period the undifferentiated axis of the embryo becomes apparent. The observation of the development of this axis shows that the growth of the leaves occurs first than that of the adventitious root. The seed operculum adheres to the testa and the primary root degenerates in the embrionary axis.

Few studies have addressed the phylogeography of species of the Cerrado, the largest savanna biome of South America. Here we aimed to investigate the phylogeographical structure of Dalbergia miscolobium, a widespread tree from the Cerrado, and to verify its concordance with plant phylogeographical and biogeographical patterns so far described. A total of 287 individuals from 32 populations were analyzed by sequencing the trnL intron of the chloroplast DNA and the internal transcribed spacer of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. Analysis of population structure and tests of population expansion were performed and the time of divergence of haplotypes was estimated. Twelve and 27 haplotypes were identified in the cpDNA and nrDNA data, respectively. The star-like network configuration and the mismatch distributions indicated a recent spatial and demographic expansion of the species. Consistent with previous tree phylogeographical studies of Cerrado trees, the cpDNA also suggested a recent expansion towards the southern Cerrado. The diversity of D. miscolobium was widespread but high levels of genetic diversity were found in the Central Eastern and in the southern portion of Central Western Cerrado. The combined analysis of cpDNA and nrDNA supported a phylogeographic structure into seven groups. The phylogeographical pattern showed many concordances with biogeographical and phylogeographical studies in the Cerrado, mainly with the Cerrado phytogeographic provinces superimposed to our sampling area. The data reinforced the uniqueness of Northeastern and Southeastern Cerrados and the differentiation between Eastern and Western Central Cerrados. The recent diversification of the species (estimated between the Pliocene and the Pleistocene) and the 'genealogical concordances' suggest that a shared and persistent pattern of species diversification might have been present in the Cerrado over time. This is the first time that an extensive 'genealogical concordance' between phylogeographic and phytogeographic patterns is shown for the Cerrado biome.

O sorgo é um cereal de curto período de maturação, no qual apresenta um alto potencial de produção de biomassa vegetal, sendo o seu caldo utilizado na fabricação do melado. Objetivando a sua aplicação como uma alternativa para a alimentação humana, este trabalho teve como objetivo a caracterização físico-química do melado Sorgo Granífero Sacarino [Sorghum biolor (L) Moench] variedade IPA 467-4-2, mediante o cultivo da planta em condições de irrigação e adubação. O melado obtido a partir do caldo do colmo de sorgo apresentou rendimento de 15%, sendo semelhante ao produzido pela cana-de-açucar (20%). O sorgo teve teor de umidade de 24,32%, 75,67% de matéria seca, 7,39% de cinzas, com 1,22 mg de ferro/mL, 92,60% de matéria orgânica e 17,17 ºBrix. Com pH de 5,41, acidez de 0,99 e açúcar total de 22,92 g/ 100g de amostra. O melado apresentou-se dentro das normas propostas pela legislação, exceto quanto ao ºBrix que apresentou valor bem abaixo ao recomendado.

The aim of this study was to verify the dry mass partition of the seed reserves during the initial growth of Swietenia macrophylla seedlings, in the dark, and at low levels of photosynthetically active radiation: 0.125; 3.12 and 52 µ mol.m-2.s-1. After 50 days, the dry mass of the seed reserves did not differ with treatments, but the total dry mass and leaf area were higher in the seedlings under higher light treatment. No difference in root/shoot ratio was observed between treatments, but the leaf area ratio was lower at higher light. Only the seedlings grown at 52 µ mol.m-2.s-1 showed a positive dry mass increase in relation to the mobilized seed reserves. With the values of the net increase of the seedling mass, a linear equation was adjusted in relation to the light levels, permitting to determine 3.76 µ mol.m-2.s-1 as the seedling light compensation point. These results explain the shade tolerance of the S. macrophylla seedlings.O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a partição da massa seca das reservas das sementes durante o crescimento de plântulas de Sietenia macrophylla , no escuro e sob baixos níveis de radiação fotossintéticamente ativa: 0,125; 3,12 e 52µ mol.m-2.s-1. Após 50 dias a massa seca das reservas das sementes não diferiram com os diferentes tratamentos de luz. Não foi observado diferenças na razão raíz/parte aérea, mas a razão área foliar foi menor no maior nível de luz. Somente as plântulas crescidas a 52 µ mol.m-2.s-1 mostraram um incremento positivo na massa seca em relação às reservas mobilizadas da semente. Uma equação linear foi ajustada entre o incremento líquido de massa seca das plântulas e níveis de luz, permitindo determinar 3,76 µ mol.m-2.s-1 como ponto de compensação de luz das plântulas. Esses resultados explicam a tolerância à sombra das plântulas de S. macrophylla
