In this paper, thanks to the experience of travel in the context of the Master of Conservation, is to analyze the figure of the student, as a traveler and not as a tourist, so this active travel is involved and how they may impact on improving his training as an architect. This remote mere spectator role also favors making efforts to know, identify, reflect, drawing, photograph or analyze what has been visited from a personal point of view and no doubt much more critical and free. En el presente trabajo, gracias a la experiencia del viaje en el contexto del Máster de Conservación, se propone analizar la figura del estudiante, en tanto que viajero y no turista, de modo que este participa activamente del viaje y cómo puede repercutir en la mejora de su formación como arquitecto. Este papel alejado del mero espectador, favorece también la realización de actividades encaminadas a conocer, identificar, reflexionar, dibujar, fotografiar o analizar aquello que se ha visitado desde un punto de vista personal y sin lugar a duda mucho más crítico y libre.

[EN] The historical strong relationship between the eastern coast of Spain and southern part of Italian Peninsula has been a common issue over different civilizations from Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans up to the most recent modern kingdoms. Considering this set of connections based on trade routes and territorial bilateral interests, the western shores of Mare Nostrum have been key-points of a dense network of military and economical strategies. The dynamics of extensive territorial control have left interesting examples of costal watchtowers both in the Sorrento Peninsula, near Naples (Italy) and in the East coast of Valencia (Spain). The process of towers construction begins at early stages of Middle Age and, from the 16th century it runs up into a systemic control of the coastline, thanks to the reuse of obsolete fortified elements and new building-site procedures. In the paper, the authors aim at highlighting the territorial relationships among a number of towers built during the 16th century, as well as they propose a comparison of their construction techniques in order to gain an historical comparative and a contextual understanding of these fortified systems.

El texto presenta una experiencia didáctica interdisciplinar que se está llevando a cabo en el Campus Terracini de la Università di Bologna (por miembros académicos de la Universidad de Bolonia investigadores del centro ENEA y de la Universitat Politècnica de València). La actividad se centra en la realización de un pequeño pabellón, sede del Trasition Team, un grupo experimental, involucrados en temáticas ambientales y sostenibles, internas y externas a la dinámica académica del Campus. Para ello, se ha estructurado una experiencia didáctica constructiva, centrada en este caso, en el empleo de materiales locales, que cumplen con requisitos determinados, prestaciones energéticas e impacto sostenible. Gracias a esta experiencia participativa de autoconstrucción, basada en la aplicación, análisis y definición del LCA de algunos materiales constructivos se está experimentando una propuesta didáctica alternativa, basada en el concepto de clase inversa o flipped classroom, crucial para futuros profesionales vinculados directa e indirectamente al mundo de la construcción. The paper outlines a didactic project undertaken at Campus Terracini (University of Bolonia Italy) thanks to local staff members and with the support of researchers from ENEA agency, Italy and professors of Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. The activity tries to To make sustainability transitions happen, considering that it is crucial not only to have a strategic planning processes committed by the top management, but also to encourage community engagement, approaching and promoting a bottom-up process. For this reason the project is concerning the layout of a small pavilion, head quarter of Transition Team (a multifunction group involved in sustainability plan of Unibo). To meet environmental performances, the space is planned with the use of appropriate building technologies, employing low impact and local materials. In addition, the space is realized in auto-construction, in order to strengthen the involvement of final users, the students. This paper will show an evaluation of appropriate building technologies with an LCA approach, combined with flipped classroom didactic methodology.

[EN] To make sustainability transitions happen, it is crucial not only to have strategic planning processes committed by the top management, but also to encourage community engagement, approaching and promoting a bottom-up process. In the specific case of a University Campus, that means the involvement of the students not only as consumers, but with a leading role in the sustainability process. DICAM department of University of Bologna has recently started the implementation of some practical actions to create a sustainability campus Terracini. These activities are parts of the Sustainability Plan of Unibo. A multifunction group, called Terracini Transition Team is managing some of these actions located in Terracini Campus. Moreover, a new model of pedagogy, called flipped classroom, has been experimented. Therefore, Terracini Transition Team has been proposing an innovative and engaging idea that could support sustainability measures: the realization of a space for students designed by themselves with an inclusive and participative approach. To meet environmental performances, the space will be planned with the use of appropriate building technologies, employing low impact and local materials. In addition, the space will be realized in auto-construction, in order to strengthen the involvement of final users, the students. This paper will show an evaluation of appropriate building technologies with an LCA approach. Finally, the reported LCA case-studies has provided the robustness to drive the choices of low impact solutions for the sustainability of Unibo. Finally, the paper demonstrates the efficacy of the adoption of whole-system approach integrating experiential learning with sustainability assessment.

This research highlights the constructive features of Juniperus thurifera timber visible in the Western Mediterranean (from the island of Sardinia to Morocco). The use of this material is above all related to vernacular and traditional architecture, in the coastal areas as well as in the interior of the analyzed countries. An initial taxonomy of its use presents us with the issue of understanding the main structural performance of this type of timber, focusing in particular on its structural use and behavior. The results, visible throughout the research, are related to the resistance of the timber and its performance. On the other hand, this raw material is valued in vernacular architecture because of its strength when exposed to sea water or harsh weather conditions. Juniper beams and pillars are the most frequent solutions, but the use of branches and roots is also common, as the research demonstrates. In this framework, the text underlines the results of the research based on a geographical survey of juniper as a construction material, and on the first attempts to study its mechanical performance.

The role of gypsum as a construction material in vernacular architecture, not only as an auxiliary material, but also for enhancing structural features in floors and even in pillars, has had a long-standing history of application in different traditional buildings in some parts of Spain. The authors have identified the main properties of this material from a structural point of view by experimenting in situ on traditional gypsum jack arch floors as part of the project “Structural consolidation of traditional floors with compression layers of gypsum with fibres” (UPV/PAID-05-11/2893). Several traditional and commercial compression layers for traditional floors were made with different proportions of water in the mixture to parameterise its use and achieve the ideal thickness and dosage. In this research, the authors have used both traditional dosages and experimental mixtures containing fibres, which were monitored by standard tests of surface hardness and resistance to compression and flexion. This work presents the main results of the properties of the different types gypsum obtained in the laboratory analysis phase as an alternative option for the structural reinforcement of traditional floors.

The study conducted on historic buildings with highlighted presence of brick-supplemented rammed earth walls (locally known as tapia valenciana) has allowed the discovery of some details of the techniques and it has shed light on their reason for being implemented. Some features of the walls have remained unchanged throughout the passage of time, but others have undergone variations over the centuries. All the results of the study (“Characterization of Brick-Supplemented Rammed Earth Walls: Documentation, Study and Improved Efficiency” UPV/PAID-06-12/SP20120466) are presented in a web resource, Tapiabrick, a structured database that explains resources, results and construction steps to have a complete understanding of brick-supplemented rammed earth walls. Maps, tips, links, texts and photos help students and professionals to better understand the technique and to make possible to use this construction option as a contemporary construction resource.
