37. Studies on Direct Electrochemical De-Oxidation of Solid ThO2 in Calcium Chloride Based Melts.

Abstract

Molten salt based direct electrochemical de-oxidation methods were investigated for the conversion of ThO2 to Th metal in CaCl2 melts at 900 °C. A Fray-Farthing-Chen (FFC) Cambridge process was performed at a constant cell voltage of 3.1 V wherein a cathode of porous ThO2 pellet and a graphite anode were used. The study also explored the feasibility of electro-calciothermic reduction of ThO2 in CaCl2-0.5 wt.% CaO melt. Electrochemical experiments were carried out for different intervals of time to elucidate the reduction mechanism. The cathode products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. No Ca-Th-O intermediate phases were observed during the reduction experiments in either process. This indicates that the reduction might occur in a single step viz. ThO2 to Th. Abstract

Crystallization behaviour in 10 and 20 mass% BaO-loaded iron phosphate glasses was studied using differential thermal analysis technique under non-isothermal conditions. Activation energy of crystallization was estimated from the experimental data by applying isoconversional method of kinetic analysis. Activation energy of crystallization was found to increase in 10 mass% BaO-loaded iron phosphate glass, whereas the activation energy showed a decreasing trend as a function of fraction of crystallization ( α) in 20 mass% BaO-loaded iron phosphate glass. Fe(PO) was found to be the major product of crystallization in both the BaO-loaded iron phosphate glasses, and other products of crystallization varied depending on the composition of the glass. The concentration of Fe was estimated based on the contribution of various identified products of crystallization and composition of the parent glass. The estimated concentration of Fe ions was 19 and 22% after the heat treatment of 10 and 20 mass% BaO-loaded iron phosphate glasses, respectively. The crystallization behaviour of BaO-loaded iron phosphate glass is compared with iron phosphate glass and iron phosphate glass containing equivalent concentration of CsO. The activation energy of crystallization of BaO-loaded glasses was relatively higher than that of CsO-loaded iron phosphate glass. Abstract

The article focuses on the development of an ultrasonic spectral analysis based methodology to measure wall thickness in the range of 0.3 to 0.7 mm in iron thimbles using low frequency ultrasonic waves. This is an alternative to conventional ultrasonic techniques. A computer software has also been developed for automated thickness measurement across a line scan.
