Within this article, we attempt to counter the seriousness that sometimes tends to weigh down academic pursuits. Although we acknowledge the necessary anchors that tether us to various obligations in our work, we enact a form of play that emerged over the course of our dissertations and extended into our budding careers. We call this form “going Gonzo.” By recounting the emergence of trickster figure within our work—who we simply call “Phillip”—we demonstrate how this form of play enabled us to strategically pull back and stretch forward in moments and spaces of intense tension. Ultimately, we describe this trickster in relation to a ludic logic of embracing the profane, foolish, and tenuously important as a way to garner levity and buoyancy amid the necessary anchors of seriousness of research.

The purpose of this article is to contend with, not answer, a question related to happiness. Specifically, we are interested in whether leisure and happiness are possible when feelings stand in stark contrast to those conventionally associated with these terms. Is leisure or happiness possible when one is existentially shaken or disturbed? We contend that it is; that existential disturbances may be necessary as a beginning for leisure, which can then lead to happiness under certain conditions. We begin by situating this claim in an exploration of the early scholarship of Pieper (1998a) and de Grazia (1964), foregrounding their work as appealing to a Classical leisure ideal. We then contrast their work to relatively more recent contributions, particularly those of Neulinger (1974; 1981; 1990), which we interpret as appealing to an idea of leisure, instrumentalized in pragmatic projects useful to legitimize its academic study. Despite the rapid growth of online learning in higher education, the dropout rates for online courses has reached 50 percent. Lack of student engagement rank as a critical reason for frequent online course dropout. This article discusses autonomy support as a strategy to enhance online students’ intrinsic motivation and engagement. Drawing from current theories and research, three guidelines are offered to provide choices, rationale behind why assignments are designed in particular ways, and flexibility in completing more personally meaningful assignments. Each guideline is accompanied with examples from existing higher education courses. This article is intended for educators and designers of online learning to employ autonomy support strategies to engage students in active participation and successful completion of the course.

Investigated the validity of the Child-Adult Medical Procedure Interaction Scale-Revised (CAMPIS-R) using multiple concurrent objective and subjective measures of child distress, approach-avoidance behavior, fear, pain, child cooperation, and parents' perceived ability to help their preschool children during routine immunizations. Parents', staffs', and children's behaviors in the treatment room were videotaped and coded. Results indicate that the validity of the CAMPIS-R codes of Child Coping and Distress, Parent Distress Promoting and Coping Promoting, and Staff Distress Promoting and Coping Promoting behavior were supported, with all significant correlations being in the predicted direction. An unanticipated finding was that the child, parent, and staff Neutral behaviors were inversely related to some measures of distress and positively related to some measures of coping. Interobserver reliability was high for each CAMPIS-R code.

The effects of childhood medical experiences and temperament on adults' medical fear, pain, coping effectiveness, and avoidance of medical situations were investi- gated. The Medical Experience Questionnaire, an instrument designed for this study, and the Dimensions of Temperament Scale-Revised (Windle & Lerner, 1986) were utilized. Participants were 147 young adults. Using correlational and hierarchical multiple regression analyses, results indicated that adults' medical fear was signifi- cantly predicted by children having experienced more medical fear and pain; by being more distractible; and by gender, with females being more fearful. Adults' medical pain was significantly predicted by having experienced more pain during childhood. Greater coping effectiveness in adulthood was related to having coped better in childhood. Background Both ectopic pregnancy and appendicitis are surgical emergencies that should be considered in female patients who present with right lower-quadrant pain. Deciding on the appropriate imaging modality in the pregnant patient can be difficult. The challenge of diagnosis is compounded when one considers that both pathologies may be present simultaneously. Objectives We present a case demonstrating co-occurrence of ectopic pregnancy and appendicitis and suggest an algorithm for evaluation and management of cases with this presentation. Case Report A 25-year-old woman presented to the Emergency Department complaining of 3 days of abdominal pain and a positive urine pregnancy test. After consultation with Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN) and General Surgery, a nondiagnostic pelvic ultrasound (US), and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study consistent with appendiceal inflammation, the patient was taken to the operating room for a laparoscopic appendectomy. While removing the inflamed appendix, the general surgeon noted the right fallopian tube was enlarged, suggestive of an ectopic pregnancy. OB/GYN was consulted again intraoperatively and noted a right ectopic pregnancy. The surgical intervention was completed with a right salpingectomy. Conclusion In a pregnant patient with right lower-quadrant pain, the differential diagnosis includes ectopic pregnancy, acute appendicitis, or in rare cases, both.
