The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of muscle length and fatigue on maximal force, submaximal force steadiness, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the biceps brachii. Force and EMG responses were measured before and after a fatigue protocol consisting of maximal intermittent contractions of the elbow flexors until task failure (n = 20). The protocol was performed on two separate occasions in a randomized order. During one visit, the elbow joint was at 90° (EF90) and for the other, it was extended to 120° (EF120). The results show a large effect size for greater force loss following fatigue at long muscle length (P = 0.067, $$\eta_{p}^{2}$$ = 0.166). The fatigue-based decreases in force steadiness were not different between muscle lengths (P = 0.502, $$\eta_{p}^{2}$$ = 0.024). The amount of experience with ultrasonography may influence measurement outcomes while images are acquired or analyzed. The purpose of this study was to identify the interrater reliability of ultrasound image acquisition and image analysis between experienced and novice sonographers and image analysts, respectively. Following a brief hands-on training session (2 h), the experienced and novice sonographers and analysts independently performed image acquisition and analyses on the biceps brachii, vastus lateralis, and medial gastrocnemius in a sample of healthy participants (n = 17). Test–retest reliability statistics were computed for muscle thickness (transverse and sagittal planes), muscle cross-sectional area, echo intensity and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness. The results show that image analysis experience generally has a greater impact on measurement outcomes than image acquisition experience. Interrater reliability for measurements of muscle size during image acquisition was generally good–excellent (ICC2,1: 0.82–0.98), but poor–moderate for echo intensity (ICC2,1: 0.43–0.77). For image analyses, interrater reliability for measurements of muscle size for the vastus lateralis and biceps brachii was poor–moderate (ICC2,1: 0.48–0.70), but excellent for echo intensity (ICC2,1: 0.90–0.98). Our findings have important implications for laboratories and clinics where members possess varying levels of ultrasound experience.

Illusionary mirror visual feedback alters interhemispheric communication and influences cross-limb interactions. Combining forceful unimanual contractions with the mirror illusion is a convenient way to provoke robust alterations within ipsilateral motor networks. It is unknown, however, if the mirror illusion affects cross-limb fatigability. We examine this concept by comparing the ipsilateral and contralateral handgrip force and electromyographic (EMG) responses following unimanual fatigue with and without illusionary mirror visual feedback. Participants underwent three experimental sessions (mirror, no-mirror, and control), performing a unimanual fatigue protocol with and without illusionary mirror visual feedback. Maximal handgrip force and EMG activity were measured before and after each session for both hands during maximal unimanual and bimanual contractions. J Strength Cond Res 36(9): 2403-2409, 2022-This study examined the strength and electromyographic (EMG) responses of upper vs. lower limb muscles during intermittent maximal contractions in both sexes. Twenty subjects ( n = 7 women) performed a fatiguing protocol (6, 30-second intermittent maximal isometric contractions with a 50% duty cycle) with either the elbow flexors or the knee extensors on separate visits. Bipolar surface EMG signals were detected from the biceps brachii and vastus lateralis muscles ( n = 5 women retained). Women maintained more of their maximal force than men (Δforce: men vs. women = -55.0 ± 12.8% vs. -43.3 ± 9.9%, p = 0.042). Although force loss was similar between the elbow flexors and knee extensors, the EMG responses showed greater reductions for the biceps brachii than those for the vastus lateralis (Δamplitude: biceps brachii vs. vastus lateralis: -32.0 ± 22.3% vs. -18.9 ± 28.9%; Δmedian frequency: biceps brachii vs. vastus lateralis: -31.1 ± 14.5% vs. -10.3 ± 17.0%). During a series of maximal intermittent isometric contractions with 30 seconds of recovery between work bouts, women are more fatigue resistant than men. In addition, the greater electrophysiological fatigue exhibited by the biceps brachii than that by the vastus lateralis suggests that high-intensity contractions involving elbow flexion will have a greater rate of fatigue progression than those involving knee extension.

We evaluated the compensatory adaptations in muscle regionalization and synergist activity after fatiguing a biarticular muscle at one joint with different muscle lengths. Eleven men (mean ± SD age = 23 ± 3 years) performed 50 maximal concentric isokinetic contractions of the dominant hip flexors on two occasions. For one trial, the knee joint was fully extended. For the other, the knee joint was fixed at 70°. Maximal voluntary contractions of the knee extensors were performed immediately before and after the hip flexion fatigue protocol while bipolar surface electromyographic signals were detected from the vastus lateralis and at five points along the length of the rectus femoris. Regardless of knee joint angle during the hip flexion fatigue protocol, knee extension peak torque was unchanged following hip flexion fatigue. The NASA/Smithsonian Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO; tempo.si.edu) satellite instrument will measure atmospheric pollution and much more over Greater North America at high temporal resolution (hourly or better in daylight, with selected observations at 10 minute or better sampling) and high spatial resolution (10 km2 at the center of the field of regard). It will measure ozone (O3) profiles (including boundary layer O3), and columns of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrous acid (HNO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), formaldehyde (H2CO), glyoxal (C2H2O2), water vapor (H2O), bromine oxide (BrO), iodine oxide (IO), chlorine dioxide (OClO), as well as clouds and aerosols, foliage properties, and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. The instrument has been delivered and is awaiting spacecraft integration and launch in 2022. This talk describes a selection of TEMPO applications based on the TEMPO Green Paper living document (http://tempo.si.edu/publications.html). Applications to air quality and health will be summarized. Other applications presented include: biomass burning and O3 production; aerosol products including synergy with GOES infrared measurements; lightning NOx; soil NOx and fertilizer application; crop and forest damage from O3; chlorophyll and primary productivity; foliage studies; halogens in coastal and lake regions; ship tracks and drilling platform plumes; water vapor studies including atmospheric rivers, hurricanes, and corn sweat; volcanic emissions; air pollution and economic evolution; high-resolution pollution versus traffic patterns; tidal effects on estuarine circulation and outflow plumes; air quality response to power blackouts and other exceptional events.

There have been recent attempts to characterize the mechanisms associated with fatigue-induced task failure. We compared the time to failure and the corresponding changes in the surface electromyogram (EMG) during sustained maximal and submaximal isometric force tasks. EMG activity was measured from the biceps brachii of 18 male participants as they sustained either a maximal or submaximal (60 % MVC) isometric contraction of the dominant elbow flexors until force could not be maintained above 55 % MVC. Intensity-dependent patterns of change were observed for EMG amplitude and mean power frequency (MNF) between the two force tasks. Bilateral deficit (BLD) describes a phenomenon that the force produced during maximal simultaneous bilateral contraction is lower than the sum of those produced unilaterally. The aim of this study was to examine the potential sex-related differences in BLD in upper body proximal and distal limb muscles. Ten men and eight women performed single-joint maximal contractions with their elbow flexors and index finger abductors at separate laboratory visits, during which the maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MVICs) were performed unilaterally and bilaterally with a randomized order in the designated muscle group. Surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from the prime movers of the designated muscle groups (biceps brachii and first dorsal interosseous) during the maximal contractions. Both men and women demonstrated BLD in their elbow flexors (deficit: men = −11.0 ± 6.3%; women = −10.2 ± 5.0%). Accompanied by this force deficit was the reduced EMG amplitude from the dominant biceps brachii (collapsed across sex: p = 0.045). For the index finger abductors, only men (deficit = −13.7 ± 6.1%), but not women showed BLD. Our results suggested that the BLD in the proximal muscle group is likely induced by the decreased maximal muscle activity from the dominant prime mover. The absence of BLD in women’s index finger muscle is largely due to the inter-subject variability possibly related to the sex hormone flux and unique levels of interhemispheric inhibition.

This study examined the time course of contralateral adaptations in maximal isometric strength (MVC), rate of force development (RFD), and rate of electromyographic (EMG) rise (RER) during 4 weeks of unilateral isometric strength training with the non-dominant elbow flexors. Twenty participants were allocated to strength training (n = 10, three female, two left hand dominant) or control (n = 10, three female, two left hand dominant) groups. Both groups completed testing at baseline and following each week of training to evaluate MVC strength, EMG amplitude, RFD and RER at early (RFD50, RER50) and late (RFD200, RER200) contraction phases for the dominant ‘untrained’ elbow flexors. The training group completed 11 unilateral isometric training sessions across 4 weeks. The contralateral improvements for MVC strength (P 0.10). Unilateral isometric strength training for 2–3 weeks can produce substantial increases in isometric muscle strength and RFD for both the trained and untrained arms. These data have implications for rehabilitative exercise design and prescription.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the fatigue index from an isokinetic fatigue test and the velocity-related decrease in peak torque for the forearm flexors. After a familiarization session, 13 habitually active males (mean ± SD, age = 23.8 ± 3.1 years) reported to the laboratory to perform either 50 repeated, maximal, concentric isokinetic muscle actions of the dominant forearm flexors at a velocity of 180°·s(-1) or 6 separate sets of 3 maximal concentric isokinetic muscle actions at randomly ordered velocities of 30, 90, 150, 270, and 330°·s(-1). The correlation between the relative percent declines in peak torque during the 2 isokinetic tests was then examined. The results indicated an inverse relationship (r = -0.75, p0.01) between these 2 variables. That is, the subjects who demonstrated the greatest fatigue indexes (i.e., those who were most susceptible to fatigue) were generally the most resistant to a velocity-related torque loss. These findings support the possibility of using a multiple-velocity isokinetic test to estimate fiber type composition, just as fatigue-based tests have been used.

To evaluate the potential neural cross-over effect between the vastus lateralis muscles in different postural resting positions. Subjects exercised on an upright cycle ergometer, using only their dominate leg, for 2 min at 30 % VO2 peak. Following this warm-up, subjects then cycled (still using only their dominant leg) for 30 min at 60 % VO2 peak. After the aerobic phase, subjects cooled down (again, using only their dominant leg) for 2 min at 30 % VO2 peak. Resting mechanomyography mean frequency was measured prior to and following aerobic exercise. There was an approximate 6.3 ± 6.8 and a 10 ± 5.1 % increase (upright sitting position with the subject’s knee joint angle fixed at 180°); an approximate 7 ± 6.6 and a 16.1 ± 6.5 % increase (upright sitting position with the subject’s knee joint angle fixed at 90°); an approximate 0.5 ± 6.8 and 3.7 ± 5.6 % increase (lying supine position with the subject’s knee joint angle fixed at 180°); and an approximately 2 ± 8.3 and 2.5 ± 8.6 % increase (lying supine position with the subject’s knee joint angle fixed at 90°) in normalized mechanomyography mean frequency after aerobic exercise for the dominant and non-dominate vastus lateralis muscles, respectfully. There appears to be a statistically significant neural cross-over effect for the vastus lateralis muscle, during three of the four postural resting positions, with the non-dominant vastus lateralis muscle having a greater increase in mechanomyography mean frequency.

In order to characterize the physiological adjustments within the neuromuscular system that contribute to task failure, this study examined the surface mechanomyographic (MMG) response during maximal and submaximal isometric force tasks of the elbow flexors sustained to failure. The time and frequency components of the MMG signal have shown to be influenced by motor unit activation patterns as well as tetanus. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the rate of change for the MMG response would associate with failure times and would be reduced to a similar degree between the two tasks. The isometric force tasks were performed by the dominant elbow flexors of twenty healthy males (age: 25 ± 4 years) and MMG was collected from the biceps brachii. Regression analyses were used to model the relationships between the rates of change for MMG versus failure times. There were high levels of interindividual variability in the response patterns, yet the models demonstrated significant negative associations between the rate of change for the MMG responses and failure times during both tasks (R 2 = 0.41–0.72, P

The purpose of the present study was to compare potential changes in the force/surface EMG cross spectrum following concentric versus eccentric exercise. Twenty-six healthy, college-aged men (mean ± SD age = 24.0 ± 3.7 yrs) performed submaximal isometric muscle actions at 60% of the maximum voluntary contraction of the dominant (exercised) and non-dominant (non-exercised) forearm flexors before (PRE) and immediately after (POST) concentric and eccentric exercise. The concentric and eccentric exercise interventions were randomly ordered and performed on days separated by at least 48 h of rest. Both interventions required the subjects to perform six sets of ten maximal muscle actions with the dominant forearm flexors. The surface EMG signal was detected from the biceps brachii of both the dominant and non-dominant limbs during the PRE and POST submaximal contractions. The surface EMG and force signals were selected from the middle six seconds of each contraction. The signals were then analyzed for amplitude and frequency content, and the surface EMG/force cross spectrum was calculated. The total power present in the cross spectrum, as well as the cross spectrum's mean frequency (MNF) were also determined. There were distinct changes in cross spectral power that were dependent on the limb and/or exercise intervention. Cross spectral power increased following both exercise interventions, but the increase was greater for the dominant than the non-dominant limb. In addition, cross spectral MNF increased for both limbs following the concentric exercise, but decreased after the eccentric exercise. These findings indicated that the cross spectral power and MNF responses were dependent on the limb that was exercised and the type of exercise intervention that was performed.

Furthermore, it appears that the relaxation from the dominant vastus lateralis muscle potentially influenced the increased relaxation of the non-dominant vastus lateralis muscle.
