Abstract

This paper introduces a novel class of low-loss and cost-effective optical planar structures tailored for magnetic detection applications. These structures represent unconventional magneto-plasmonic devices specifically optimized for an ‘optical switch’ configuration. The structure consists of a 1D deep sinusoidal gold grating covered by a thin cobalt layer. In this unique arrangement, the excited plasmon induces a high-contrast switching phenomenon between the reflected free space intensity of specular (0th) and −1st diffracted orders, sensitive to any transverse magnetic fields applied to the cobalt layer. The use of these two distinct diffracted orders induces differential measurements, effectively mitigating common drift and perturbations. This innovative approach results in an enhanced detection sensitivity, showcasing the potential of these structures for advanced magnetic field sensing applications.

Abstract

A pair of nanostructured mirrors made of a diffraction grating inscribed in the top layer of a Bragg mirror are designed such that a phase shift near π and different reflected amplitudes exist between transverse electric (TE) and magnetic (TM) reflected polarization states at normal incidence. When a standing wave laser resonator is formed with two such mirrors and the two mirrors’ principal axes are twisted one with respect to the other, this phase shift condition suppresses multiple longitudinal mode emission arising from axial spatial hole burning. In addition, the different amplitudes of TE and TM reflected polarizations create polarization eigenstates with different round-trip losses, suppressing one polarization eigenstate. Laser experiments made with a Yb3+-doped Y3Al5O12 active material reveal enhanced purity of the emission spectrum compared to similar lasers using conventional laser mirrors. The proposed design enables a miniature single mode laser, replacing more complex designs usually needed to achieve that goal.

Abstract

The paper presents a derivation of analytical components of S-matrices for arbitrary planar diffractive structures and metasurfaces in the Fourier domain. Attained general formulas for S-matrix components can be applied within both formulations in the Cartesian and curvilinear metric. A numerical method based on these results can benefit from all previous improvements of the Fourier domain methods. In addition, we provide expressions for S-matrix calculation in case of periodically corrugated layers of 2D materials, which are valid for arbitrary corrugation depth-to-period ratios. As an example the derived equations are used to simulate resonant grating excitation of graphene plasmons and an impact of silica interlayer on corresponding reflection curves., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

7. Theoretical Investigation of Refractive Index Detection Limit in the Surface Plasmon Resonance-Triggered Switch Effect

Abstract

The metrological performances of a surface plasmons resonance (SPR)-based sensor exploiting the plasmon-triggered switch effect are investigated in this article. The switch effect, recently demonstrated, is a lossless energy transfer phenomenon between the 0th and −1st diffracted orders, through SPR excited modes, which only occurs in a deep metallic grating, while the incidence angle or the wavelength varies. A differential measurement of diffraction efficiencies of these two propagative diffracted orders and an optimized signal filtering allows to retrieve the sensing signal at a fixed wavelength or fixed incidence angle. For a deep metallic grating illuminated under TM polarization, such a sensor provides high sensitivity and a limit of detection (LOD) lower than 10−7 RIU, thus reaching the limits of the best current plasmonic methods. The theoretical sensitivity and measurement uncertainties are rigorously investigated considering digital signal processing in order to provide an optimized signal processing and thus increase the sensitivity and the current LOD. Due to its performance and implementation simplicity, this new SPR-based sensor is very promising for the detection and quantification of chemical and biological species both in liquid and gaseous environments.

Abstract

We report for the first time the elaboration of an original ZnO nanowire (NW) architecture entirely based on a soft chemistry approach and its thorough assessment through optical measurements and electromagnetic simulations. This architecture relies on the photo-imprinting of a sol-gel ZnO-based photosensitive seed layer combined with the subsequent localized hydrothermal growth of ZnO NWs. We firstly show how optimization of the elaboration protocol leads to uniform and reproducible linear and periodic gratings of ZnO NWs with a width / pitch of 2 µm / 4 µm. For reference, full-covered samples (NWs coating) have also been elaborated from a non-imprinted seed layer. It has been evidenced through morphological study that NW gratings present a peculiar profile similar to a hedgehog. Standard and angle-resolved photoluminescence measurements performed on both kinds of samples are then presented. These optical characterizations demonstrate that ZnO NW visible emission is strongly modified by the presence of NW gratings and that its red part is directionally extracted and increased by a factor up to 2. We present finally electromagnetic simulations performed for both samples which highlight the role of the gratings acting as coupled microcavities that boost the ZnO emission thanks to light localization and diffractive mechanisms. It enables the extraction of the resonant photons towards some specific angles and at given wavelengths.

Abstract

The insulator‐to‐metal transition (IMT) of vanadium dioxide (VO2) at ≈68 °C enables a variety of optical applications, including switching and modulation, and tuning of optical resonators. This work designs and demonstrates a novel thermally activated optical switch consisting of a SiN/VO2/SiN multilayer sandwich structure with an AMONIL‐based grating with a reduced transition temperature of 47 °C. The optical switching in the multilayer is due to the IMT of the VO2‐embedded layer. Here, the asymmetrical TE1 mode exhibiting a quasi‐zero electric field in the center of the multilayer waveguide is excited in the resonant waveguide grating (RWG) structure under normal incidence via the AMONIL‐based grating printed on top, leading to high resonant transmittance (75%) at room temperature. Increasing the temperature to more than 47 °C causes VO2 to undergo an insulator‐to‐metal transition accompanied by optical modifications in the IR region, completely canceling the resonance effect, while reducing the transmittance to 30%. Further, the modeling results aimed at optimizing the design of the experimental structure. These results demonstrate good performance of the proposed design and pave the way to fabricate VO2‐based optical switches for photonics applications including lasers, sensors, and detectors, in which external stimuli such as heat affect the transmittance or reflectance spectrum. Abstract

This paper describes a tailored and versatile technology route to achieve micro and nanopatterning of both TiO2 and TiN thin films using a direct photo patternable sol–gel approach combined with a rapid thermal annealing and nitridation process. The approach consists in multi‐scale structuring TiO2 using laser direct writing or mask/colloidal lithography on a wide range of substrates including materials and of diverse geometry. These patterned TiO2 layers can subsequently be converted into a micro‐structured metallic TiN layer using a direct rapid thermal nitridation process that results in metallic thin films (TiN). This work demonstrates the versatility of this complete chain of soft chemistry based new process for patterning TiO2 and TiN thin films thereby avoiding expensive processes such as etching and lift‐off, while preserving their diffractive properties and high thermal stability, that is, up to 1000 °C under vacuum. The process is compatible with different kinds of substrates of different shapes and sizes. These results pave the way for developing a cost‐effective and time‐saving approach to different cutting‐edge applications such as metasurfaces, sensors, and applications in the luxury and decoration sector.
