Abstract

Background: In 2020, ACIE Appy study showed that COVID-19 pandemic heavily affected the management of patients with acute appendicitis (AA) worldwide, with an increased rate of non-operative management (NOM) strategies and a trend toward open surgery due to concern of virus transmission by laparoscopy and controversial recommendations on this issue. The aim of this study was to survey again the same group of surgeons to assess if any difference in management attitudes of AA had occurred in the later stages of the outbreak. Methods: From August 15 to September 30, 2021, an online questionnaire was sent to all 709 participants of the ACIE Appy study. The questionnaire included questions on personal protective equipment (PPE), local policies and screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection, NOM, surgical approach and disease presentations in 2021. The results were compared with the results from the previous study. Results: A total of 476 answers were collected (response rate 67.1%). Screening policies were significatively improved with most patients screened regardless of symptoms (89.5% vs. 37.4%) with PCR and antigenic test as the preferred test (74.1% vs. 26.3%). More patients tested positive before surgery and commercial systems were the preferred ones to filter smoke plumes during laparoscopy. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was the first option in the treatment of AA, with a declined use of NOM. Conclusion: Management of AA has improved in the last waves of pandemic. Increased evidence regarding SARS-COV-2 infection along with a timely healthcare systems response has been translated into tailored attitudes and a better care for patients with AA worldwide.

In spite of this, many Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) systems treat second language (L2) vocabulary learning as the memorization of "vocabulary facts", and employ spaced-repetition algorithms designed to optimize the formation and maintenance of individual memory traces. The Knowledge- Learning-Instruction (KLI) framework provides guidelines as to what kind of knowledge components involve which learning processes, and how they are best taught. We reconsider the position of L2 vocabulary learning in the KLI framework, in light of extensive evidence of interaction and transfer effects in L2 vocabulary learning. We argue that L2 vocabulary learning involves the acquisition of generalisable skills. We further validate this claim with evidence from research into novel approaches to L2 vocabulary teaching. These novel approaches align with the instruction al recommendations made by the KLI framework for teaching complex rules, not facts, yet they yield significant improvements in L2 vocabulary acquisition. Encouraging error commission may improve learning outcomes and provide insight into latent learning processes. We investigate the possibility of eliciting useful errors through the use of orthographic similarity-based feedback. We find that error commissions fully replace non-answers during a learning task and largely replace them during post-tests. Participants receiving similarity-based feedback seem to better consolidate orthographic knowledge over a one-week delay. The committed errors provide evidence for gradual learning of sublexical elements and for theories holding that specificity of representations increases during learning. Gradual feedback shows to also have motivational benefits. 21. An Approach to Folksonomy-Based Ontology Maintenance for Learning Environments

Abstract

Recent research in learning technologies has demonstrated many promising contributions from the use of ontologies and semantic web technologies for the development of advanced learning environments. In spite of those benefits, ontology development and maintenance remain the key research challenges to be solved before ontology-enhanced learning environments are widely used. In this paper, we present an approach to ontology maintenance based on the use of collaborative tags contributed by learners while using learning environments. Our contribution is twofold: 1) a visualization and user interaction interface supporting the tasks of enriching ontologies with selected collaborative tags; and 2) ontology-enhanced metrics that are used for measuring semantic relatedness between collaborative tags and ontology concepts and for recommending tags which are relevant to a given ontological concept. We developed a software architecture as a proof of concept and a tool for the evaluation of our proposal. This tool is used to conduct the evaluation of the usability and effectiveness of the proposed method. (Contains 2 tables, 4 figures, and 5 footnotes.)

Learning Analytics techniques have shown a great potential in identifying and exploring SRL strategies from trace data in various learning environments. However, these strategies have been mainly identified through analysis of sequences of learning actions, and thus interpretation of the strategies is heavily task and context dependent. Further, little research has been done on the association of SRL strategies with different influencing factors or conditions. To address these gaps, we propose an analytic method for detecting SRL strategies from theoretically supported SRL processes and applied the method to a dataset collected from a multi-source writing task. The detected SRL strategies were explored in terms of their association with the learning outcome, internal conditions (prior-knowledge, metacognitive knowledge and motivation) and external conditions (scaffolding). The study results showed our analytic method successfully identified three theoretically meaningful SRL strategies. The study results revealed small effect size in the association between the internal conditions and the identified SRL strategies, but revealed a moderate effect size in the association between external conditions and the SRL strategy use.

Abstract

Predictors of student academic success do not always replicate well across different learning designs, subject areas, or educational institutions. This suggests that characteristics of a particular discipline and learning design have to be carefully considered when creating predictive models in order to scale up learning analytics. This study aimed to examine if and to what extent frequently used predictors of study success are portable across a homogenous set of courses. The research was conducted in an integrated blended problem-based curriculum with trace data (n = 2,385 students) from 50 different course offerings across four academic years. We applied the statistical method of single paper meta-analysis to combine correlations of several indicators with students’ success. Total activity and the forum indicators exhibited the highest prediction intervals, where the former represented proxies of the overall engagement with online tasks, and the latter with online collaborative learning activities. Indicators of lecture reading (frequency of lecture view) showed statistically insignificant prediction intervals and, therefore, are less likely to be portable across course offerings. The findings show moderate amounts of variability both within iterations of the same course and across courses. The results suggest that the use of the meta-analytic statistical method for the examination of study success indicators across courses with similar learning design and subject area can offer valuable quantitative means for the identification of predictors that reasonably well replicate and consequently can be reliably portable in the future., QC 20230207

While previous research efforts have made notable contributions towards identifying and understanding learning tactics from trace data in various blended and online learning settings, there is still a need to deepen our understanding about learning processes that are activated during the enactment of distinct learning tactics. In order to fill this gap, we propose a learning analytic approach to unveiling and comparing self-regulatory processes in learning tactics detected from trace data. Following this approach, we detected four learning tactics (Reading with Quiz Tactic, Assessment and Interaction Tactic, Short Login and Interact Tactic and Focus on Quiz Tactic) as used by 728 learners in an undergrad course. We then theorised and detected five micro-level processes of self-regulated learning (SRL) through an analysis of trace data. We analysed how these micro-level SRL processes were activated during enactment of the four learning tactics in terms of their frequency of occurrence and temporal sequencing. We found significant differences across the four tactics regarding the five micro-level SRL processes based on multivariate analysis of variance and comparison of process models. In summary, the proposed LA approach allows for meaningful interpretation and distinction of learning tactics in terms of the underlying SRL processes. More importantly, this approach shows the potential to overcome the limitations in the interpretation of LA results which stem from the context-specific nature of learning. Specifically, the study has demonstrated how the interpretation of LA results and recommendation of pedagogical interventions can also be provided at the level of learning processes rather than only in terms of a specific course design.

46. Transitions through lifelong learning: Implications for learning analytics

Abstract

The ability to develop new skills and competencies is a central concept of lifelong learning. Research to date has largely focused on the processes and support individuals require to engage in upskilling, re-learning or training. However, there has been limited attention examining the types of support that are necessary to assist a learner's transition from “old” workplace contexts to “new”. Professionals often undergo significant restructuring of their knowledge, skills, and identities as they transition between career roles, industries, and sectors. Domains such as learning analytics (LA) have the potential to support learners as they use the analysis of fine-grained data collected from education technologies. However, we argue that to support transitions throughout lifelong learning, LA needs fundamentally new analytical and methodological approaches. To enable insights, research needs to capture and explain variability, dynamics, and causal interactions between different levels of individual development, at varying time scales. Scholarly conceptions of the context in which transitions occur are also required. Our interdisciplinary argument builds on the synthesis of literature about transitions in the range of disciplinary and thematic domains such as conceptual change, shifts between educational systems, and changing roles during life course. We highlight specific areas in research designs and current analytical methods that hinder insight into transformational changes during transitions. The paper concludes with starting points and frameworks that can advance research in this area.

Abstract

Turbulence investigations of the flow past an unswept wing at a high angle of attack are reported. Detailed predictions were carried out using large-eddy simulations (LES) with very fine grids in the vicinity of the wall in order to resolve the near-wall structures. Since only a well-resolved LES ensures reliable results and hence allows a detailed analysis of turbulence, the Reynolds number investigated was restricted to [Re.sub.c]= [10.sup.5] based on the chord length c. Admittedly, under real flight conditions [Re.sub.c] is considerably higher (about (35-40). [10.sub.6]). However, in combination with the inclination angle of attack [alpha]=18 deg this [Re.sub.c] value guarantees a practically relevant flow behavior, i.e., the flow exhibits a trailing-edge separation including some interesting flow phenomena such as a thin separation bubble, transition, separation of the turbulent boundary layer, and large-scale vortical structures in the wake. Due to the fine grid resolution applied, the aforementioned flow features are predicted in detail. Thus, reliable results are obtained which form the basis for advanced turbulence analysis. In order to provide a deeper insight into the nature of turbulence, the flow was analyzed using the invariant theory of turbulence by Lumley and Newman (J. Fluid Mech., 82, 161-178, 1977). Therefore, the anisotropy of various portions of the flow was extracted and displayed in the invariant map. This allowed us to examine the state of turbulence in distinct regions and provided an improved illustration of what happens in the turbulent flow. Thus, turbulence itself and the way in which it develops were extensively investigated, leading to an improved understanding of the physical mechanisms involved, not restricted to a standard test case such as channel flow but for a realistic, practically relevant flow problem at a moderate Reynolds number [DOI: 10.1115/1.2175162]

Abstract

Turbulent drag reduction by dilute addition of high polymers is studied by considering local stretching of the molecular structure of a polymer by small-scale turbulent motions in the region very close to the wall. The stretching process is assumed to restructure turbulence at small scales by forcing these to satisfy local axisymmetry with invariance under rotation about the axis aligned with the main flow. It can be shown analytically that kinematic constraints imposed by local axisymmetry force turbulence near the wall to tend towards the one-component state and when turbulence reaches this limiting state it must be entirely suppressed across the viscous sublayer. For the limiting state of wall turbulence, the statistical dynamics of the turbulent stresses, constructed by combining the two-point correlation technique and invariant theory, suggest that turbulent drag reduction by homogeneously distributed high polymers, cast into the functional space which emphasizes the anisotropy of turbulence, resembles the process of reverse transition from the turbulent state towards the laminar flow state. These findings are supported by results of direct numerical simulations of wall-bounded turbulent flows of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids and by experiments carried out, under well-controlled laboratory conditions, in a refractive index-matched pipe flow facility using state-of-the art laser-Doppler anemometry. Theoretical considerations based on the elastic behavior of a polymer and spatial intermittency of turbulence at small scales enabled quantitative estimates to be made for the relaxation time of a polymer and its concentration that ensure maximum drag reduction in turbulent pipe flows, and it is shown that predictions based on these are in very good agreement with available experimental data.
