Increased mortality rate for patients with mental disorders and their shorter lifespan compared to the general public is stated by numerous authors. Services on the Clinic for mental disorders 'Dr Laza Lazarević' were reorganized, by introducing intensive care units - level two, i.e. contemporary intensive care of patients was introduced, only without life support. Primary objective of the research was to determine if the introduction of intensive care to the Clinic led to a statistically significant change in the number of fatal outcomes of hospitalized patients. The research was designed as a cross-sectional study and it included 62 patients that have died while being hospitalized at the Clinic for mental disorders 'Dr Laza Lazarević' in Belgrade, in 2011 and 2012. Data were collected by retrospective insight in the histories of illnesses and treatment protocols of the Clinic and institutes for pathology and forensic medicine of the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade. Obtained data were statistically analysed with Student's T-test and ANOVA test, with a significance level of 0.05. Statistically significant difference was determined in fatalities in 2011 compared to 2012 with p = 0.007, and there were significantly less fatalities in 2012. Statistically significant difference in frequency of fatal outcomes when comparing 2011 to 2012 was determined only when comparing the ward of previous intensive care on one side with the newly established psychiatric intensive care units - level two on the other. High level of significance was determined with p = 0.005. New organizational concept introduced in 2012 has led to more efficient twenty-four-hour care and monitoring of hospitalized patients, suppression of accompanying somatic illnesses which altogether led to a significant reduction of fatal outcomes.

Postulate of our research issue is based on the argumentation the correlation diffuse damage of neuronical and non neuronical subcortical structures weakened vascularization during the longer premorbid period with the clinical manifestation of cognitive dysfunction. The main aim of our researching is argumentation the atrophy subcortical brains structures and connection with cognitive dysfunction by the extent to the demented and brain mnestic deterioration. Research was carried out in the two researched groups of patients treated in hospital, A and B, that controlled themselves as well. Both groups consisted of 40 patients both sexes aged 50 to 70 years. Results of our research confirmed that cognitive functioning was damaged to all patients with determined subcortical brain, s ischemia and reduction of the neuronical and non neuronical subcortical structures diagnosed by the visualised imaging diagnostic methods. Dysfunction of cognition according to difficulty is the reciprocal psychometric confirmed scope of subcortical atrophy, or the reduction of the brain, s structures.

U radu su prikazane mogućnosti integrisanih sistema za ocenu stanja struktura. Detaljno su prikazana laboratorijska ispitivanja koja su potvrdila mogućnosti piezoelektričnih senzora da na zadovoljavajući način obavljaju emitovanje, odnosno prijem Lambovih talasa i otkriju postojanje prskotina u panelima vazduhoplovnih konstrukcija, primenom „puls-eho“ metode. Za potrebe pretraživanja većih površina dat je prikaz korišćenja fazno pomerenog rasporeda piezoelektričnih senzora-davača kako bi se formirao ultrazvučni strukturalni radar. Za obezbeđenje kvaliteta pretraživanja PWAS imaju mogućnost samotestiranja, koristeći svojstva elektromehaničke impedance., Emedded nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is an emerging technology that will allow for the transitioning from conventional ultrasonic methods to embedded systems for structural health monitoring (SHM), such as those envisaged for the Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM). Structural health monitoring for IVHM requires the development of small, lightweight, inexpensive systems to be embedded in the airframe with minimum weight penalty and at affordable costs. For non-destructive evaluation, PWASs can be used as both active and passive probes. The main advantage of PWASs over conventional ultrasonic probes lies in their small size, light weight, low profile, and low cost. In spite of their size, these novel devices are able to replicate many of the functions of the conventional ultrasonic probes.

U radu su prikazani trenutni status ove inovativne tehnologije poboljšanja karakteristika delova vazduhoplovnih struktura, kao i mogućnosti primene ove tehnologije., Laser peening is an inovative surface enhancement process used to increase mechanical properties i.e. resistance of aircraft parts, engine compressors and fan blades in order to improve high cycle fatique life. Laser peening may also be reffered to as laser shock processing, and various other commercial trade names are available.This paper reviews the status of the laser peening technology, material property enhancements and potential applications.

Clinical signs appearance and significant increases of ICAM-1 and MMP-2 expressions with the clusters of VCAM-1(+) immunoreactivity in the choroids plexus epithelium to transferred anti-myelin oligodendroglial antibodies into the third brain ventricle, indicate important role of choroids plexus in the induction of acute experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Magnetic brain stimulation with AKMA micro-magnet flux density of 60 miliTesla, 5 mm in diameter, implanted upon the pineal gland (PG), immediately after antibody injection, significantly decreases the expression of MMP-2 and ICAM-1 in the choroids plexus of the rat brain and abruptly suppresses the induction of acute EAE.

This article presents an analysis of different cepstral normalization techniques in automatic recognition of whispered and bimodal speech (speech+whisper). In these experiments, conventional GMM-HMM speech recognizer was used as speaker-dependant automatic speech recognition system with special Whi-Spe corpus containing utterance recordings in normally phonated speech and whisper. The following normalization techniques were tested and compared: CMN (Cepstral Mean Normalization), CVN (Cepstral Variance Normalization), MVN (Cepstral Mean and Variance Normalization), CGN (Cepstral Gain Normalization) and quantile-based dynamic normalization techniques such as QCN and QCN-RASTA. The experimental results show to what extent each of these cepstral normalization techniques can improve whisper recognition accuracy in mismatched train/test scenario. The best result is obtained using CMN in combination with inverse filtering which provides an average 39.9 percent improvement in whisper recognition accuracy for all tested speakers.

- Abstract
Patients suffering from cholelithiasis have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications, particularly ischemic myocardial disease. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), already used in clinical practice for the treatment of cholelithiasis and related conditions, has proven antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the cardioprotective effect of UDCA pre-treatment on isoprenaline-induced myocardial injury in rats. Male Wistar albino rats were randomized into four groups. Animals were pre-treated for 10 days with propylene glycol + saline on days 9 and 10 (control), 10 days with propylene glycol + isoprenaline on days 9 and 10 (I group), 10 days with UDCA + saline on days 9 and 10 (UDCA group), and 10 days with UDCA + isoprenaline on days 9 and 10 (UDCA + I group). UDCA pre-treatment significantly reduced values of high-sensitivity troponin I (hsTnI) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) cardiac markers ( p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). The value of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was also decreased in the UDCA + I group compared to the I group ( p < 0.001). UDCA also significantly increased glutathione (GSH) levels, while showing a tendency to increase levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). The level of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) expression, a key regulatory gene of inflammation, was diminished when UDCA was administered. A reduction of cardiac damage was also observed in the UDCA pre-treated group. In conclusion, UDCA pre-treatment showed a cardioprotective effect on isoprenaline-induced myocardial injury in rats, primarily by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.

The ultimate goal of value-based laboratory medicine is maximizing the effectiveness of laboratory tests in improving patient outcomes, optimizing resources and minimizing unnecessary costs. This approach abandons the oversimplified notion of test volume and cost, in favor of emphasizing the clinical utility and quality of diagnostic tests in the clinical decision-making. Several key elements characterize value-based laboratory medicine, which can be summarized in some basic concepts, such as organization of in vitro diagnostics (including appropriateness, integrated diagnostics, networking, remote patient monitoring, disruptive innovations), translation of laboratory data into clinical information and measurable outcomes, sustainability, reimbursement, ethics (e.g., patient empowerment and safety, data protection, analysis of big data, scientific publishing). Education and training are also crucial, along with considerations for the future of the profession, which will be largely influenced by advances in automation, information technology, artificial intelligence, and regulations concerning in vitro diagnostics. This collective opinion paper, composed of summaries from presentations given at the two-day European Federation of Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Strategic Conference "A vision to the future: value-based laboratory medicine" (Padova, Italy; September 23-24, 2024), aims to provide a comprehensive overview of value-based laboratory medicine, projecting the profession into a more clinically effective and sustainable future., (© 2024 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.)

New Findings: What is the central question of this study? What are the biggest challenges in performing in vitro studies on isolated human umbilical arteries? What is the main finding and its importance? The protocols presented in this study indicate some potential outcomes important for interpretation of the vascular responsivities of human umbilical arteries and could be useful for planning future in vitro studies with human umbilical arteries., Abstract: Human umbilical artery (HUA) preparations are of particular importance for in vitro studies on isolated blood vessels because their sampling is not risky for the patient, and they can provide the closest possible impression of changes related to the uteroplacental circulation during pre-eclampsia. Using organ bath techniques, useful experimental protocols are provided for measuring some pathophysiological phenomena in the vascular responses of HUAs. Several vasoconstrictors (serotonin, prostaglandin F and phenylephrine) and vasodilators (acetylcholine and minoxidil) were seleted for determination of their vasoactivity in HUAs. The role of L-type voltage-operated calcium channels and different types of potassium channels (K
ATP , BKCa and KV ) were assessed, as was the impact of homocysteine. Serotonin was confirmed to be the most potent vasoconstrictor, while acetylcholine and phenylephrine caused variability in the relaxation and contraction response of HUA, respectively. The observed increase in serotonin-induced contraction and a decrease in minoxidil-induced relaxation in the presence of homocysteine suggested its procontractile effect on HUA preparations. Using selective blockers, it was determined that KATP and KV channels participate in the minoxidil-induced relaxation, while L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels play an important role in the serotonin-induced contraction. The presented protocols reveal some of the methodological challenges related to HUA preparations and indicate potential outcomes in interpreting the vascular effects of the investigated substances, both in physiological conditions and in the homocysteine-induced pre-eclampsia model., (© 2023 The Authors. 24. Salivary cortisol as a biomarker of stress in surgical patients.

Background: Surgical stress and pain result in activation of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. The aim of this study was to establish the effects of postoperative pain and various modalities of analgesic administration on salivary and serum cortisol levels, as well as to establish the validity of salivary cortisol as a stress indicator in surgical patients., Methods: A randomized controlled trial involved 60 patients scheduled for elective abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery. Patients were randomly divided into two groups depending on the model of postoperative analgesia. The first group (MI - morphine intermittently) included patients given morphine doses 0.1 mg/kg/6h s.c. intermittently. 26. Pomegranate Peel Extract Attenuates Isoprenaline-Induced Takotsubo-like Myocardial Injury in Rats.

- Abstract
Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is an acute heart failure syndrome characterised by catecholamine-induced oxidative tissue damage. Punica granatum , a fruit-bearing tree, is known to have high polyphenolic content and has been proven to be a potent antioxidant. This study aimed to investigate the effects of pomegranate peel extract (PoPEx) pre-treatment on isoprenaline-induced takotsubo-like myocardial injury in rats. Male Wistar rats were randomised into four groups. Animals in the PoPEx(P) and PoPEx + isoprenaline group (P + I) were pre-treated for 7 days with 100 mg/kg/day of PoPEx. On the sixth and the seventh day, TTS-like syndrome was induced in rats from the isoprenaline(I) and P + I groups by administering 85 mg/kg/day of isoprenaline. PoPEx pre-treatment led to the elevation of superoxide dismutase and catalase ( p < 0.05), reduced glutathione ( p < 0.001) levels, decreased the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances ( p < 0.001), H
2 O2 , O2 - ( p < 0.05), and NO2 - ( p < 0.001), in the P + I group, when compared to the I group. In addition, a significant reduction in the levels of cardiac damage markers, as well as a reduction in the extent of cardiac damage, was found. In conclusion, PoPEx pre-treatment significantly attenuated the isoprenaline-induced myocardial damage, primarily via the preservation of endogenous antioxidant capacity in the rat model of takotsubo-like cardiomyopathy.- Published

Over time, the metrological concept of uncertainty in measurement has been very successfully integrated into laboratory sciences. For proper implementation, an understanding of specific metrology terminology and additional concepts such as metrology traceability and commutability is necessary. Although the original thinking about measurement uncertainty in laboratory medicine suggests the complexity of the concept, it basically refers to the result as the end product of the entire laboratory process. Although the data on measurement uncertainty can be expressed quantitatively, the basis of this concept is the continuous evaluation of all phases of the laboratory process. This means that laboratory experts should keep in mind that the extra-analytical phases (on which the uncertainty of the measurement results may depend the most) must be continuously monitored. The analytical phase can be "held in check" by established internal and external quality control processes. It is the internal/external quality control data that is used to calculate the numerical value of the measurement uncertainty of the measurement results. Although over time the awareness of laboratory experts regarding the concept of measurement uncertainty has increased, there are still many challenges that need to be followed, and the last one is how to achieve a balance between understanding, evaluation process and application of measurement uncertainty data of measurement results for complete and ultimate practical use., (Copyright © 2023. 28. Antiphospholipid antibodies in healthy Serbian middle-aged subjects: Preliminary data.

Background: The investigation of the prevalence of the IgG and the IgM isotypes of anticardiolipin (aCL) and antib2glycoprotein I (ab2gpI) Abs in healthy Serbian middleaged subjects was the main goal of our study. In addition, we analyzed the potential associations of above-mentioned Abs with serum proteins and lipids/lipoproteins., Methods: Forty healthy subjects were included in our study. Obesity (BMI 30 kg/m2) was present in 8/40 (20%) subjects. Titers of analyzed Abs were measured by ELISA., Results: The prevalence of IgG and IgM ab2gpI Abs was 5% and 12.5%, respectively, while the prevalence of IgM aCL was 10%. The IgG ab2gpI Abs were significantly different between subjects with normal triglycerides levels and those with hypertriglyceridemia (Mann-Whitney, P = 0.014). The significant difference in hsCRP concentrations was observed between subjects with the increased levels of the IgM isotype of aCL Abs and those with normal IgM aCL values (Mann-Whitney, P = 0.028)., Conclusions: Dyslipidemia and BMI ≥30 were associated with aPL Abs and therefore, the correction of BMI and lipid status might be beneficial in reduction or elimination of predisposing factors that might trigger thrombotic events in otherwise healthy middle-aged subjects. - Abstract
Measurement uncertainty (MU) of results is one of the basic recommended and accepted statistical methods in laboratory medicine, with which analytical and clinical evaluation of laboratory test quality is assessed. Literature data indicate that the calculation of MU is not a simple process, but that its assessment in daily laboratory practice should be reduced to routine and simple presentation, understandable to both laboratory professionals and physicians. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to understand the purpose of the test for which MU is to be determined. Various suggestions have been given for presentation of MU as a quantitative indicator of the quality of the final measurement result in the medical laboratory. Although MU refers to the final measurement result, this metrological concept reflects the entire laboratory measurement process. The data on estimated MU is used to interpret the measured numerical result, and represents quantitatively the quality of the measurement itself, i.e. how different are the results of multiple measurements of the analyte of interest in the same sample, as well as whether the method of determination itself is subjected to significant random and systematic deviation. Initially, in the metrological concept, the MU is viewed in relation to the true value of the analyte of interest. However, the true value of the analyte measured in the biological fluid matrix of the study population cannot be known. It is therefore considered the closest value obtained by the perfect method, for which the bias and inaccuracy, as measures of systematic and random error, are equal to zero, which is practically impossible to achieve in routine laboratory practice. Although current standards require accredited medical laboratories to estimate MU, none of these guidelines provide clear guidance on how this can be achieved in daily laboratory work. This review examines literary data and documents dealing with MU issues, but also highlights what additional terms and data should be considered when interpreting MU. This paper ultimately draws attention, and once again points out, that a simpler solution is needed for this universal concept to be formally and universally applicable in routine laboratory medicine practice.

30. Quality benchmarking of smartphone laboratory medicine applications: comparison of laboratory medicine specialists' and non-laboratory medicine professionals' evaluation.

Objectives: There are many mobile health applications (apps) now available and some that use in some way laboratory medicine data. Among them, patient-oriented are of the lowest content quality. The aim of this study was to compare the opinions of non-laboratory medicine professionals (NLMP) with those of laboratory medicine specialists (LMS) and define the benchmarks for quality assessment of laboratory medicine apps., Methods: Twenty-five volunteers from six European countries evaluated 16 selected patient-oriented apps. Participants were 20-60 years old, 44% were females, with different educational degrees, and no professional involvement in laboratory medicine. Each participant completed a questionnaire based on the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) and the System Usability Scale, as previously used for rating the app quality by LMS. The responses from the two groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation., Results: The median total score of NLMP app evaluation was 2.73 out of 5 (IQR 0.95) compared to 3.78 (IQR 1.05) by the LMS. All scores were statistically significantly lower in the NLMP group (p<0.05), except for the item Information quality (p=0.1631). The suggested benchmarks for a useful appear: increasing awareness of the importance and delivering an understanding of persons' own laboratory test results; understandable terminology; easy to use; appropriate graphic design, and trustworthy information., Conclusions: NLMP' evaluation confirmed the low utility of currently available laboratory medicine apps. 31. Lipid status association with 25-hydroxy vitamin D: Cross sectional study of end stage renal disease patients.

- Abstract
Background: Some observational studies indicate an association of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) insufficiency and atherogenic cholesterol concentrations. The aim of this study was to investigate relationship between 25(OH)D concentrations and lipid parameters in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, separately for predialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients., Methods: We have adjusted 25(OH)D concentrations for seasonal variability with cosinor analysis, and performed all further analysis using these corrected 25(OH)D concentrations. Concentrations of 25(OH)D and the lipid parameters were determined in 214 ESRD patients and 50 control group participants. The analysis included the measurement of 25(OH)D by HPLC, apolipoprotein (Apo) AI, ApoB and Lp(a) by nephelometry, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) by spectrophotometry and manually calculated ApoB/ApoAI and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio., Results: ESRD patients with adjusted 25(OH)D concentrations of 50 nmol/L had significantly higher TC (P = 0.005) and ApoAI (P = 0.049). Significantly higher HDLC (P = 0.011) and ApoAI (P = 0.020) were found in hemodialysis patients with the 25(OH)D concentrations of 50 nmol/L. The other analyzed lipid parameters differed significantly between predialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients with 25(OH)D concentrations of < 50 nmol/L., Conclusions: Our study indicate the significant relationship between 25(OH)D repletion and optimal concentrations of lipid parameters in ESRD patients. - Abstract
Jungian active imagination is a well known and valuable method in analytical psychology and psychotherapy. The present study assessed, for the first time, psychological and psycho-acoustical (voice and speech quality) effects of active imagination experiment in outdoor, forest, ambient. In order to analyse the voice and speech quality, participants' verbal expressions were recorded before and after the experiment. Psychological observations were based on the thirteen features and were rated according to the bipolar Comparison Mean Opinion Score scale. The results showed a noticeable positive participants' experiences after the experiment, connected with themselves, others, their behaviour, other verbal and non-verbal expressions and relations towards nature. Voice and speech quality analysis, based on the speech signal processing approach, was done based on the fourteen acoustic features. The results showed a statistically significantly better voice and speech quality of the participants at the end of the experiment (p < 0.05). Applying the averaging model from the Information Integration Theory, we obtained integral evaluative ratings in active imagination for psychological observations E
AI and voice and speech quality observations EVQ , for each participant. The value of Pearson's correlation coefficient R = 0.6385 (p < 0.05) has shown a significant correlation between these two ratings. Overall results highlight starting hypothesis that exist some strong voice and speech correlates of psychological observations in Jungian active imagination experiment.- Published

- Abstract
Background Many of the mobile applications (apps) used for delivering health interventions involve laboratory medicine data. This survey was conducted to search the online market for health apps that manage laboratory medicine data. The aim was to review them and perform a quality evaluation. Methods Apps search criteria were "Lab results blood work", "Lab results", and "Health apps". After the stepwise exclusion process, 52 selected apps were downloaded and analyzed. For review and content analysis of the apps, a multidimensional tool for classifying and rating the quality of mobile health apps - Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS), was used. Results Selected apps were classified into five categories according to their intended use by patients or physicians, and the type of data engaged. Spearman's correlation analysis found significant correlations between MARS individual scoring items, as with the subjective quality and number of technical aspects. Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed a significant difference in the number of technical aspects employed, MARS engagement and informational quality score items, total score, and subjective quality. The lowest values for all of these items were in the category of apps designed for patients, and the post hoc test showed that the difference was statistically significant between this and the values in all other categories. Conclusions Apps designed for patients, are of the poorest quality, considering the total quality of the content and information they provide, estimated using the MARS tool. This estimation needs to be validated for laboratory medicine apps, and eventually modified after consideration of specific quality benchmarks.

34. Medical Biochemistry as Subdiscipline of Laboratory Medicine in Serbia.

- Abstract
Medical biochemistry is the usual name for clinical biochemistry or clinical chemistry in Serbia, and medical biochemist is the official name for the clinical chemist (or clinical biochemist). This is the largest sub-discipline of the laboratory medicine in Serbia. It includes all aspects of clinical chemistry, and also laboratory hematology with coagulation, immunology, etc. Medical biochemistry laboratories in Serbia and medical biochemists as a profession are part of Health Care System and their activities are regulated through: the Health Care Law and rules issued by the Chamber of Medical Biochemists of Serbia. The first continuous and organized education for Medical Biochemists (Clinical Chemists) in Serbia dates from 1945, when the Department of Medical Biochemistry was established at the Pharmaceutical Faculty in Belgrade. In 1987 at the same Faculty a five years undergraduate study program was established, educating Medical Biochemists under a special program. Since the academic year 2006/2007 the new five year undergraduate (according to Bologna Declaration) and four-year postgraduate program according to EC4 European Syllabus for Postgraduate Training in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine has been established. The Ministry of Education and Ministry of Public Health accredited these programs. There are four requirements for practicing medical biochemistry in the Health Care System: University Diploma of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Study of Medical Biochemistry), successful completion of the professional exam at the Ministry of Health after completion of one additional year of obligatory practical training in the medical biochemistry laboratories, membership in the Serbian Chamber of Medical Biochemists and licence for skilled work issued by the Serbian Chamber of Medical Biochemists. In order to present laboratory medical biochemistry practice in Serbia this paper will be focused on the following: Serbian national legislation, healthcare services organization, sub-disciplines of laboratory medicine and medical biochemistry as the most significant, education in medical biochemistry, conditions for professional practice in medical biochemistry, continuous quality improvement, and accreditation. 35. Verifying Sarcoidosis Activity: Chitotriosidase versus ACE in Sarcoidosis - a Case-control Study.

Background: Until now, a proper biomarker(s) to evaluate sarcoidosis activity has not been recognized. The aims of this study were to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the two biomarkers of sarcoidosis activity already in use (serum angiotensin converting enzyme - ACE and serum chitotriosidase) in a population of 430 sarcoidosis patients. The activities of these markers were also analyzed in a group of 264 healthy controls., Methods: Four hundred and thirty biopsy positive sarcoidosis patients were divided into groups with active and inactive disease, and groups with acute or chronic disease. In a subgroup of 55 sarcoidosis patients, activity was also assessed by F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (
18 F-FDG-PET) scanning. Both serum chitotriosidase and ACE levels showed non-normal distribution, so nonparametric tests were used in statistical analysis., Results: Serum chitotriosidase activities were almost 6 times higher in patients with active sarcoidosis than in healthy controls and inactive disease. A serum chitotriosidase value of 100 nmol/mL/h had the sensitivity of .5% and specificity of 70.0%. A serum ACE activity cutoff value of 32.0 U/L had the sensitivity of 66.0% and the specificity of 54%. A statistically significant correlation was obtained between the focal granulomatous activity detected on18 F-FDG PET/CT and serum chitotriosidase levels, but no such correlation was found with ACE. The levels of serum chitotriosidase activity significantly correlated with the disease duration ( P < 0.0001). - Abstract
The diversity of bee (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) and hoverfly (Diptera: Syrphidae) pollinators from ten localities in Vojvodina, Serbia was surveyed. Among different types of Pannonian habitat (grasslands, heathland and scrub, woodland and forest habitats) all localities were categorised as forest and steppe. They were in protected areas, mostly undisturbed by human activity. Censuses of pollinators took place from 30 March to 10 October, 2014. We recorded 218 pollinator species; 135 bee species (42 Halictidae; 32 Apidae; 29 Andrenidae; 24 Megachilidae; 7 Colletidae; 1 Melittidae) and 83 species of hoverflies. We describe a new species of hoverfly, Eumerus pannonicus sp. nov., and compare it to other similar species. Based on our study, the Special Nature Reserve of Pašnjaci Velike Droplje is critical for the conservation of this new Eumerus-being only found at this locality-and other species such as Chrysotoxum lineare (Zetterstedt), which is rare in Europe and protected under Serbian legislation. The highest numbers of bee species were recorded in the Deliblato and Subotica sand areas (40 and 32, respectively), while Fruška Gora Mountain and the Vršac Mountains harboured the highest number of hoverfly species.

37. Indirect estimation of age-related reference limits of thyroid parameters: a cross-sectional study of outpatients' results.

Objectives: Defining adequate reference limits (RLs) for thyroid hormones is an important task for support monitoring and the treatment of subclinical thyroid disease. We determined whether there are age-related RLs for thyroid parameters in male and female outpatients free of overt thyroid disease., Design: We analyzed 22,860 results (11,440 male and 11,420 female outpatients above the age of 18) for thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4) and total triiodothyronine (T3) that were stored in our laboratory information system between 2008 and 2011. We calculated the 2.5th and 97.5th centiles for the analyzed thyroid parameters., Results: Our results indicate higher TSH levels with ageing, with a significant difference (p < 0.05) between the 97.5th centiles for males and females older than 70 (5.07 mIU/L and 4.10 mIU/L), but also a significant difference between male and female fT4 from 31 to 40 and from 41 to 50 years old (18.4 vs 14.9 pmol/L and 19.0 vs 15.9 pmol/L, p < 0.05), respectively. Overall indirect estimates of the 97.5th centiles for TSH for males and females were not significantly different and were below the generally recommended upper limit (4.01 mIU/L and 4.20 mIU/L, respectively). In addition, we found no statistically significant change in mean T3 values in the analyzed population., Conclusions: This cross-sectional study indicates change in TSH and fT4 levels with ageing and gender-related upper limits. This suggests that by using indirect estimation a laboratory could provide clinicians with more accurate gender- and age-specific RLs for thyroid parameters.

Introduction: Donor-specific transfusion (DST) is claimed to improve graft survival in living kidney transplantation. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of DST on the incidence of acute rejection (AR), graft function and survival in the early and late post-transplantation period in transfusion-naïve patients., Methods: Three patient groups were compared: group 1 received DST (n = 18), group 2 patients received no transfusion prior to surgery (n = 13) and group 3 consisted of 132 randomly transfused patients. The DST protocol consisted of infusion of fresh whole donor blood (3 × 150 mL) at two-wk intervals accompanied by three d of azathioprine. All patients were grafted within one month after the third DST. Triple drug immunosuppression based on cyclosporine A was given to all patients., Results: DST and polytransfused patients experienced significantly less AR compared with group 2 patients. Two-yr graft function was significantly better in patients in groups 1 and 3 compared with group 2. Although similar eight-yr patient and graft survival was found in all the groups, delayed graft function patients had the longest graft half-life., Conclusion: DST imposes a significant beneficial effect on the incidence of AR, DGF and graft function during the first post-transplantation year in transfusion-naïve patients receiving standard immunosuppression therapy., (© 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.)
