Abstract

The objective of this paper is to obtain an applicable assessment method and a Web-GIS-based prediction system for regional landslides. The traditional Richards function is reconstructed using the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) and the coordinate transformation technique. The analytical pore pressure for a slope model is derived by solving the modified Richard equation via the Green function and Fourier transformation. The obtained transient pore pressure field is then incorporated with Brakensiek's matric suction theory, to build a conceptual model for rainfall-induced shallow landslides. The safety factor is obtained by solving the limit equilibrium equation of the conceptual model. The method is then implemented in a Web-GIS system, considering influence of slope geometry features, geology parent material, and near-real-time rainfall intensity of the study area. It is verified that this method is computationally efficient and reliable for gentle slopes and short rainfall durations. Moreover, an extensive parameter study shows that the two commonly used coefficients in the intensity-duration equation are both correlated to rainfall inter-event time via exponential functions, and rainfall event time via power functions. The primary influential factor for regional landslides is the initial water content, followed by the rainfall duration and intensity, and least by soil thickness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Landslide susceptibility evaluation at regional scale is commonly performed based dominantly on the analysis of geological and geomorphological conditions of historical landslide cases. The main content of this type of evaluation covers identifying key casual factors, their critical groupings and relative importance. The present study demonstrates an application of the above concept to a 90 km long segment of Jinshajiang River valley in China. Correlations of landslide occurrence with potential causative factors are derived according to interpretation of field investigation. Lithology, orientation of bedding planes, slope angle, stream action, rainfall and earthquake intensity are selectively recognized as identifiable/measurable causative factors to establish a factor domain. The membership grades, for field values of quantitative factors, to the susceptibility classes are determined based on the construction of fuzzy sets, while those for descriptive factors are assigned from a fuzzy score table. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is adopted for assigning weights to each individual factor. Subsequently, the evaluation is implemented in a GIS program IDRISI, where four classes of landslide susceptibility are identified and delineated in the subject area. The approach described in the present paper showed consistence with the nature and availability of data for evaluating landslide susceptibility at regional scale. The methodology presented can be effectively employed by relevant authorities to identify risky areas for dislocating major infrastructural project, and develop management strategies for land use.

Abstract

In 1988, Chinese educational ministry had rearranged the disciplines in advanced education, among which the civil engineering disciplines became one of the most complex one. How to make it distinguishing and highly qualified for undergraduate course is a difficult problem confronting us. This article mainly introduced some reform measures and the profits of Chengdu University of Technology's Civil Engineering education. It may provide us some valuable reference for civil engineering education under new situation.
