To better understand the mechanisms of the hydro-ecological cycle in the changing environments of the Yangtze River Basin (YZRB), it is valuable to investigate vegetation dynamics and their response to climate change. This study explored the spatial patterns of vegetation dynamics and the essential triggers of regional differences by analyzing vegetation variations in the 1982–2015 period at different time scales and the interannual variability of vegetation sensitivity to climate variability. The results showed that the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) increased significantly in the last three decades, but vegetation displayed great spatiotemporal variations at different time scales. The vegetation in the central part of the YZRB dominated by forests and shrublands was more sensitive to climate variability than vegetation in the source region of the YZRB, which was dominated by alpine meadows and tundra (AMT). The contribution of climate variables to the vegetation sensitivity index (VSI) had large spatial differences, but solar radiation and temperature were the dominant factors. Furthermore, 57.9% of the YZRB had increasing VSIs, especially in the south-central part. Consistent with the distributions of elevation and vegetation types, vegetation dynamics in the YZRB were divided into five spatial patterns, with the largest increasing NDVI trend in Region III and the largest VSI in Region IV. Shallow groundwater evaporation (Eg) is a major component of the hydrological cycle, especially in semiarid and arid locations. Empirical methods are commonly used to estimate Eg. However, most of these methods can only weakly represent Eg variations along the soil depth and do not consider the energy driver. In this paper, a temperature coefficient was proposed and incorporated into two preferred empirical models to characterize the impacts of soil temperature and air temperature lags on Eg. The method was evaluated using in situ daily data obtained from nonweighing bare soil lysimeters. The results indicated that the models that considered the temperature gradient variable (T) conformed to the changes in the actual Eg values with depth more appropriately than the original models, accompanied by 4.3%–8.8% accuracy improvements overall. Shallow groundwater evaporation Eg was found to be influenced by the water table depth (H), T, and pan evaporation (E0) in descending order, and strong interactions were found between H and T. Moreover, the impact of precipitation on Eg was investigated; measurements from dry days without precipitation revealed the actual Eg process, the relative errors in the cumulative Eg values derived at different depths demonstrated a positive relationship with infiltration recharge, and the errors related to precipitation induced 6.7%–8.3% Eg underestimations. These results contribute to a better understanding of evaporative losses from shallow groundwater and the typical Eg situation that occurs simultaneously with recharge, and they provide promising perspectives for corresponding integrated hydrologic modeling research. Reliable precipitation is crucial for hydrological studies over Tibetan Plateau (TP) basins with sparsely distributed rainfall gauges. In this study, four widely used precipitation products, including the Asian Precipitation Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of the water resources (APHRODITE), the High Asia Reanalysis (HAR), and the satellite-based precipitation estimates from Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM), were comprehensively evaluated by combining statistical analysis and hydrological simulation over the Upper Brahmaputra (UB) River Basin of TP during 2001–2013. In respect to the statistical assessment, the overall performances of GPM and HAR are comparable to each other, and both are superior to the other two datasets. For hydrological assessment, both daily and monthly GPM-based streamflow simulations perform the best not only at the UB outlet with very good results, but they also illustrate satisfactory results at Yangcun and Lhasa hydrological stations within the UB. Runoff simulation using HAR only performs well at the UB outlet, whereas it shows poor results at both Yangcun and Lhasa stations. The simulated results based on APHRODITE and TRMM show poor performances at UB. Continuous use of synthetic insecticides increases environmental contamination and resistance in many species. Botanical insecticides, such as essential oil, were considered to be suitable alternatives due to multiple modes of action and low mammalian toxicity. Haplophyllum dauricum is a overlooked plant for the control of stored-product insects. Five essential oils (EOs) from Haplophyllum dauricum collected in October and November, rich in pinene, were extracted and evaluated on anti-insect activity against two stored-product insects, Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera: Anobiidae). The lethal doses (LD 50 and LD 90), lethal concentrations (LC 50 and LC 90) and percentage repellency (PR) were evaluated. The GC-MS analysis showed that pinene (α -pinene and β -pinene) were major constituent of the EOs (54.61% and 57.33% in fruits, 46.80% in stems + leaves, and 30.57% in leaves), followed by β -phellandrene (14.49% and 21.34% in fruits and leaves), 3-carene (26.84% in leaves) and limonene (15.77%, 11.09%, 12.40%, 7.59%, and 6.24% in five EOs, respectively). Five EOs and selected major compounds provided promising fumigant, contact and repellent activity against T. castaneum and L. serricorne. The EO of stems + leaves collected in October showed the strongest contact toxicity on T. castaneum (LD 50 = 20.21μg/adult), as well as fumigant and contact toxicity on L. serricorne (LC 50 = 17.17 mg/L air, LD 50 = 25.46 μg/adult). All the five EOs exhibited effective repellent activity (PR>80%) against T. castaneum. The results highlight that the EOs from H. dauricum have a promising potential as eco-friendly botanical insecticides. • The compositions of five essential oils from different parts of Haplophyllum dauricum (L.) Background: It is known to all that iron overload is a fatal adverse effect on cells and tissue. Herein, our study aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin on iron-overloaded stress in macrophages. Methods: Ferric ammonium citrate was added to the macrophage cell line (RAW264.7) to establish an iron-overloaded macrophage model. Cell counting kit 8 assay was used to detect cell viability. Superoxide dismutase, reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and apoptosis were performed to analyze the severity of cellular oxidative damage. In addition, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot were used to detect the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2. Results: The result showed that iron overload of macrophage was visualized by incubating in 40 µM ferric ammonium citrate for 24 h. The curcumin significantly reversed the iron overload-induced apoptotic cells at low (10 µM) and middle (20 µM) concentrations. Additionally, the levels of malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species activity in the groups of curcumin at low (10 µM) and middle (20 µM) concentrations were significantly decreased, while superoxide dismutase activity was obviously increased compared with that of the ferric ammonium citrate group alone. Finally, we found that low (10 µM) and middle (20 µM) dose curcumin up-regulated nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 expression at mRNA and protein levels compared with the ferric ammonium citrate group alone. Conclusion: Curcumin reduces iron-overloaded stress in macrophages by activating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and enhancing the superoxide dismutase activity, thereby protecting cell apoptosis. Abstract: The application of artificial neural network (ANN) to rainfall-runoff simulations has provided promising results in recent years. However, it is difficult to obtain satisfying results by using raw data for the direct prediction of the time series of streamflows. To improve simulating daily streamflow with back-propagation (BP) neural networks, the whole data set in this study is divided into two independent groups, flood period and non-flood period. The approaches and techniques of applying the division-based BP (DBP) in runoff simulation are presented in this paper. A comparison of the DBP model to the primitive BP model and the Xinanjiang model was also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the improvement. The numerical experimental results indicate that DBP model still overestimated flow peak, but improved considerably the streamflow simulation in the non-flood period. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Accurate simulation and reliable projection of temperature and precipitation over China under climate change is important for proposing adaptation measures for future natural ecosystems. This study proposes a novel method to construct an optimal reliability ensemble averaging (REA) subset from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) based on their historical performance in simulating temperature and precipitation across different subregions. The optimal REA ensemble outperforms the multi‐model ensemble mean (MMEM) and single optimal model in reproducing the spatial patterns of historical annual mean temperature and precipitation over China from 1985 to 2014. Under the examined Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenarios (SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5), the REA projects persistent warming and increased precipitation towards the end of the 21st century, intensifying under higher emissions. Nationwide mean temperature rises of 1.39, 2.69 and 5.05°C, and precipitation increases of 9%, 10% and 20% are projected in the long‐term (2081–2100) relative to 1995–2014 under SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5 scenarios, respectively. Northwestern China and the Tibetan Plateau are expected to experience amplified warming and precipitation increases, respectively. Compared to the MMEM, the REA generally indicates reduced warming but larger precipitation increases, especially over the Tibetan Plateau under higher‐emissions scenarios. The REA exhibits lower projection uncertainty than the MMEM for both temperature and precipitation, primarily attributed to reduced internal variability. The novel optimal framework for REA shows the potential for extracting robust regional climate information applicable to different subregions of China. • Long-term dynamics of permafrost changes on the TP were assessed. • Changes in permafrost distribution and ALT were considered simultaneously. • 15 representative GCMs were used to project permafrost future changes on the TP. • The permafrost stability and the elevation-dependent change of ALT were analyzed. Permafrost degradation on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) will significantly affect local water cycle processes, downstream water ecology, and water security. In this study, we evaluate the long-term interannual dynamics of permafrost distribution and active layer thickness (ALT) on the TP based on historical data from Climatic Research Unit gridded Time Series (CRU TS) downscaling and projected data under four shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) in Scenario Model Intercomparison Project (ScenarioMIP) of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP 6). To achieve this, we employ a data-driven scheme at 1 km resolution for both historical and future periods (1901–2100) that compares the performance of four machine learning algorithms to select the optimal algorithm for permafrost distribution and ALT simulations. Our results indicate that the permafrost on the TP has been undergoing degradation in both historical and future periods, with a decrease in permafrost area and an increase in ALT. The changing rates of permafrost area and regionally averaged ALT during the historical period (1901–2020) are −1.05 × 104 km2 decade–1 and 0.012 m decade–1, while an accelerated degradation is observed after the 1970 s (with changing rates of permafrost area and regionally average ALT of −3.62 × 104 km2 decade–1 and 0.055 m decade–1). Our results also suggested that permafrost degradation on the TP will continue in the future under the four SSP scenarios. The individual global climate models (GCMs) exhibit a consistent degradation trend but great uncertainty in degradation speed. The ensemble mean of simulations across 15 selected GCMs showed that the degradation percentage of permafrost area on the TP under scenarios SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 was 26.0 ± 6.8 %, 50.4 ± 5.6 %, 79.2 ± 4.5 %, and 89.0 ± 4.0 % by 2100, and the regionally average ALT increased by 0.301 ± 0.112 m, 0.628 ± 0.113 m, 1.204 ± 0.119 m, and 1.486 ± 0.125 m, respectively. We also analyze permafrost stability and elevation-dependent changes of ALT on the TP. The permafrost stability increases with elevation and latitude, and ALT changes more intensely with increasing elevation. Large amounts of frozen carbon stored in the permafrost of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are gradually thawing due to climate warming. The thaw of frozen carbon allows more active soil organic carbon (SOC) on the TP to participate in the global carbon cycle, which has usually been neglected in previous studies of permafrost carbon. This paper assesses the thawed SOC stock and its historical dynamics in TP permafrost areas based on a data-driven scheme. The results show that the current permafrost area of the TP is 1.14 × 106 km2, and the SOC stock in the top 10 m of permafrost areas is 47.36 Pg. The active layer of the TP permafrost has a regional average thickness of 2.37 m during the baseline period (2000−2020), storing 18.19 Pg of SOC, accounting for about 38.4 % of the total SOC stock in the top 10 m, with the remaining more than 60 % perennially frozen in permafrost. The dynamics of thawed SOC are calculated based on baseline period SOC pools. Despite significant fluctuations, there is a general trend of 0.074 Pg SOC thaw per decade over 1901−2020 as the active layer has deepened. Significantly, the thaw trend of frozen SOC after 1976 is more prominent, reaching 0.420 Pg decade−1. Moreover, this paper reconstructs the SOC pool at the beginning of the last century by incorporating historical deep carbon emissions (1 − 10 m) in the current SOC pool. It recalculates the thaw trend of frozen carbon based on this and finds that the general thaw trend of SOC from 1901−2020 is more significant, with a rate of 0.092 Pg decade−1. Additionally, the dynamics of SOC pools in surface soils (0 − 1 m) of TP permafrost areas are also discussed. A novel two‐dimensional ZnII coordination framework, poly[[μ‐4,4′‐bis(2‐methylimidazol‐1‐yl)diphenyl ether‐κ2N3:N3′](μ‐4,4′‐sulfonyldibenzoato‐κ2O:O′)zinc(II)], [Zn(C14H8O6S)(C20H18N4O)]n or [Zn(SDBA)(BMIOPE)]n, (I), where H2SDBA is 4,4′‐sulfonyldibenzoic acid and BMIOPE is 4,4′‐bis(2‐methylimidazol‐1‐yl)diphenyl ether, has been prepared and characterized by IR, elemental analysis, thermal analysis and X‐ray diffraction analysis, the latter showing that the coordination polymer exhibits a threefold interpenetrating two‐dimensional 44‐sql network. The Amomum villosum essential oil was obtained from hydrodistillation and was investigated by GC-MS. The main constituents were bornyl acetate (51.6%), camphor (19.8%), camphene (8.9%) and limonene (6.2%). Insecticidal toxicity of the essential oil was evaluated in this study. It showed that the essential oil possessed contact toxicity against Tribolium castaneum and Lasioderma serricorne (LD50 = 32.4 and 20.4 μg/adult). Three monoterpenoids camphor, camphene and limonene showed strong fumigant toxicity against T. castaneum (LC50 ＜ 2.3, LC50 ＝ 6.2 and 6.2 mg/L air). In addition, repellency of the essential oil was also evaluated. Data showed that the essential oil and all four compounds had repellent activity against T. castaneum and L. serricorne at high concentration (78.63 nL/cm2). It is indisputable that global warming has triggered more frequent extreme weather and in turn led to severe flood disasters. To understand the trend of extreme rainfall under 1.5 °C and 2 °C warming, we investigated the historical variation and future trends in extreme rainfall for the Huai River basin, which has frequently been hit by floods, using recorded meteorological data and a projection of five General Circulation Models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6. We used the years 1995–2014 as the baseline period to study the temporal and spatial changes in extreme rainfall under 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C warming scenarios. The results indicated that (1) temperatures in the Huai River basin have risen significantly from 1995 to 2014, but there are insignificant variation trends in annual precipitation (AP), intensive precipitation (R95P), maximum daily precipitation (Rx1d) and heavy rain days (Rr50) during the same time span. (2) From 2015 to 2100, both temperature and extreme rainfall indices show increase trends, with a higher rate of increase under a higher emission scenario. (3) Under the warming scenario of 1.5 °C, AP, R95P, Rx1d and Rr50 in the basin will likely increase by 4.6%, 5.7%, 6.2% and 13.4%, respectively, compared with that in the baseline period. Under the warming scenario of 2.0 °C, AP, R95P, Rx1d and Rr50 will probably increase by 7.3%, 7.4%, 10.9% and 19.0%, respectively. (4) Spatially, the changes in extreme rainfall indices under the warming scenarios of 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C generally tend to increase from north to south. Higher intensity extreme rainfall will likely extend to the whole of the Huai River basin. The daytime and nighttime precipitation proportions of daily total precipitation (especially extreme daily precipitation) are important indicators that help to understand the process of precipitation formation, which in turn helps to evaluate and improve models and reanalysis precipitation data. In this study, we used the Huai River Basin (HRB) as a case to explore the daytime and nighttime precipitation proportions of daily total precipitation based on 135 meteorological stations during 1961–2018. The total, daytime, and nighttime precipitation showed zonal distributions with high and low values in the southern and northern parts of the basin, respectively. The nighttime precipitation was slightly greater than the daytime precipitation. With the increase in precipitation intensity, the seasonal cycles of the total, daytime, and nighttime precipitation were more distinct, and precipitation mainly occurred in summer. The annual range of precipitation differences between daytime and nighttime in wet seasons showed a downward trend in 1961–2003 followed by an upward trend in 2003–2018. This reversal of annual range of precipitation around 2003 may be related to the changes in annual range of convective precipitation differences between daytime and nighttime in wet seasons. The decrease of light precipitation mainly depended on the decrease of nighttime precipitation. The contributions of nighttime precipitation events to torrential precipitation events were greater than those of daytime precipitation. The days of extreme precipitation events accounted for a very low proportion of total precipitation days, but their precipitation amount accounted for relatively high proportions of total precipitation amount. Annual extreme precipitation amount showed a slightly upward trend, which was caused by the increased nighttime precipitation. Under extreme precipitation conditions, large proportions of daytime precipitation were mainly concentrated in the southeastern parts of the HRB, whereas large proportions of nighttime precipitation were mainly concentrated in the northwestern parts of the basin. The concurrent daytime and nighttime precipitation showed slightly increasing trends, especially in the southeastern part of the basin. With the increase in daytime and nighttime precipitation, the risk of concurrent precipitation extremes in the southern part of the basin increased (shorter return period means higher risk). Existing studies have been conducted to assess the future thaw of frozen carbon on the TP, primarily focusing on the deepening of the active layer while neglecting the impact of permafrost area shrinkage. This oversight may lead to a significant underestimation of the potential thaw of frozen carbon. Our research underscores the pivotal role of permafrost area shrinkage in estimating the future thaw of frozen carbon. Our findings reveal that when the combined effects of permafrost area shrinkage and active layer deepening are considered, the thaw rates of frozen carbon in various radiative forcing scenarios are nearly four times those based on active layer deepening alone. Notably, our results demonstrate substantial thaw of frozen organic carbon in the TP permafrost area under all four future scenarios: In the low radiative forcing scenario SSP1-2.6, it is predicted that 55.4 % of the organic carbon in the permafrost area 0–10 m soils will be in a state of thaw by 2100, and more than 90 % in the high radiative forcing scenario SSP5-8.5. This substantial thaw is poised to diminish the TP's current carbon sink function significantly. Our study emphasizes that as global warming persists, frozen carbon in permafrost areas will play a more active role in global carbon cycle processes in the future. Furthermore, we stress the importance of considering permafrost area shrinkage in understanding the thaw of frozen carbon, providing valuable insights for carbon balance studies on the TP. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (TP) is one of the most sensitive areas to climate change, and its ecological environment changes directly or indirectly reflect the global climate change trend. The snow cover ratio (SCR) is one of the important indicators reflecting the climate and environmental changes on the TP. The daily remote sensing data of snow cover on the TP from 2003 to 2014 were used to study the spatiotemporal distribution of snow cover on the TP. This dataset is generated based on the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) product. The snowmelt days were extracted using the moving average method. The results have shown that the average snowmelt day on the TP starts on the 103rd day and ends on the 223rd day of a year, and the snowmelt duration has a downward trend. Snow is mainly distributed in the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, Karakoram Mountains and Himalayas. The SCR in summer has a downward trend, while in autumn has a rising trend. This shows that the difference in SCR during the year has enlarged, increasing the risk of snowmelt floods. The SCR is highly correlated with temperature, but weakly correlated with precipitation. Using long-term snow cover remote sensing data, the distribution of glacier coverage on the TP can be roughly extracted, of which the glacier area accounts for about 1.1% of the total area of the TP. Seroma is a common complication following breast cancer surgery and the controllable predictive factors remain unknown. Patients who underwent mastectomy with axillary dissection between 2008 and 2011 in our hospital were retrospectively investigated. The demographics, clinical characteristics and therapeutic factors of each patient were recorded. The association of seroma incidence with each variable was evaluated by univariate logistic regression analysis. All the variables were considered independent predictors of seroma incidence. The probability of developing seroma following surgery was evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. A total of 102 patients, with a mean age of 54.86±13.02 years (range, 30-89 years), were included in this study and the incidence of seroma was found to be 22.55%. The operative time (P=0.0066, coefficient = 0.0261, OR=1.03) and the use of patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCA) (P=0.0002, coefficient = -1.8089, OR=0.03, ref = no) was significantly associated with the incidence of seroma postoperatively. In conclusion, the prediction of the development of seroma following mastectomy with axillary dissection is challenging. Background: The dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule 3 grabbing non-integrin (DC-SIGN) is an important pathogen recognition receptor of the innate immune system. DC-SIGN promoter variants play important role in the susceptibility to various infectious diseases. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy that is common in southern China and whether DC-SIGN promoter variants have effects on susceptibility to NPC is still unknown. The aim of this study is to ascertain the potential involvement of DC-SIGN promoter single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in NPC susceptibility. Methods: We conducted a case control study based on Cantonese population including 444 NPC patients and 464 controls matched on age and sex. The 1041 bp of DC-SIGN promoter region was directly sequenced for all samples. Sequence alignment and SNP search were inspected using DNAStar analysis programs and haplotype frequencies were estimated in Haploview V 4.0. The associations between the SNPs and the risk of NPC were analyzed using chi-square test and non-conditional logistic regression analysis with SPSS 13.0 software. Results: A total of six variants were observed in the DC-SIGN promoter region and DC-SIGN -139 GG and -939 AA were significantly associated with NPC risk with adjusted Odds Ratios (ORs) of 2.10 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.23-3.59; P = 0.006) and 2.52 (1.29-4.93; P = 0.007) respectively and subjects carrying the risk allele DC-SIGN -871 G had 1.47-fold (95% CI = 1.14-1.90) increased risks of developing NPC (P = 0.003). Haplotype analysis revealed that h1 'AAAG' was significantly associated with protection against NPC (OR = 0.69; P = 0.0002) and the association was still significant when using 1000 permutation test runs (P = 0.001). Conclusions: Our study indicated that DC-SIGN promoter variants appear to be involved in the susceptibility to NPC and the detailed mechanism of this effect need further studies. The understanding of the propagation process from meteorological to soil moisture drought is not clear on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). We used the standardized precipitation index (SPEI) and the standardized soil moisture index (SSMI) to represent meteorological and soil moisture drought. By using Mann-Kendall (MK) trend test, wavelet analysis, run theory, Moran's I and drought migration model, we evaluated the trend of SPEI and SSMI on the TP from 1980 to 2018, analyzed the response relationship, explored the temporal (lag time (LT), propagation rate, duration (DD) and severity (DS)) and spatial (spatial autocorrelation, trajectory, direction and distance) properties of drought propagation, and discussed the potential factors. The result indicated that SPEI intensified at winter and annual scales, SSMI mitigated at all time scales. Both of them showed a consistent dry trend in the southeastern TP. In the time dimension, SSMI usually lagged behind SPEI by about 2–3 months, and the LT increased from summer to winter. The LT tended to be shorter in summer in regions characterized by humid and semi-humid climates, meadows and shrublands, and seasonally frozen ground. Propagation rates were greater in the southeast than northwest. After propagation, DD and DS became weaker in winter (45 % and 52 % of regions decreased, respectively) and stronger in summer (80 % and 76 % of regions increased, respectively). In the spatial dimension, the LT of adjacent regions is closely related, dominated by High - High values and Low-Low values. SSMI had shorter migration trajectories and slower migration rates than SPEI. In addition, the direction of drought propagation was predominantly northwest. For the first time, this study has provided insights into the spatial and temporal propagation of meteorological drought to soil moisture drought on the TP and provides a theoretical basis for understanding drought propagation and predicting soil moisture drought. The extreme precipitation regimes have been changing as the climate system has warmed. Investigating the non‐stationarity and better estimating the changes of the extreme precipitation are valuable for informing policy decisions. In this study, two precipitation indices are employed to describe the extreme events, including maximum 5‐day precipitation amount (RX5day) and the number of very heavy precipitation days (R20). The generalized additive models for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) is employed to characterize non‐stationarities in extreme precipitation events and related climate indices in 13 stations in the Hanjiang River basin (HJRB). Three models including stationary model without change (M0), non‐stationary models over time (M1) and non‐stationarity models with large‐scale climate indices (M2) as predictors, respectively, are considered to analyse occurrence rates of extreme precipitation. The optimal model and the significant predictors were selected by the Akaike information criterion (AIC). To investigate the main predictors at regional scale, the homogeneous subregions for precipitation extremes are identified by clustering analysis. Results indicate that: (a) the non‐stationarities of RX5day series and R20 series at all stations are identified in the HJRB; (b) extreme precipitation behaviour is significantly influenced by climate indices and non‐stationary model 2 to describe the changes of extreme precipitation is better than non‐stationary model 1, indicating the impact of large‐scale climate forcing on the changes of extreme precipitation regimes; (c) the HJRB can be categorized into three homogenous regions. The optimal distributions and the main predictors of extreme precipitation events in most stations of each subregion are basically the same; (d) the dominated climate indices influencing the extreme precipitation events are different in different regions and have regional patterns. The results highlight the modelling of extreme precipitation events under non‐stationarity conditions and provide information for developing strategies of mitigation and adaptation to climate change impacts on extreme precipitation. • Compiled a multi-year, multi-layer daily soil moisture record across Anhui Province. • Soil moisture generally increases with depth in Anhui Province. • Soil moisture in the region has large seasonal fluctuations, decaying with depth. • Effects of antecedent accumulated rainfall on soil moisture varies over depth. Little measurement-based soil moisture information is available for the humid to semi-humid transitional zones in China. Anhui Province is a representative area of these zones and spans several hydroclimatic and geomorphological zones. To overcome shortage of observational soil moisture information in this area, we collected and compiled a multi-layer daily soil moisture record from 2012 to 2016 across Anhui Province based on the observations of a soil moisture-observing network composed of 85 sites. We then analyzed the vertical and spatiotemporal variability of soil moisture across this region. Primary findings are: (a) soil moisture in this region has apparent vertical gradients and increases with soil depth; (b) substantial soil moisture spatial variability appears in the shallow soil layers (depth ≤40 cm) with the highest values in the middle part of this region, but soil moisture in the deep layers (depth >40 cm) shows low spatial variability; (c) seasonality of soil moisture across this region is complicated and has fluctuations with July as the wettest month in most of the province; (d) inter-monthly fluctuation of soil moisture is larger in the upper soil layers than in the lower layers; and (e) antecedent accumulated rainfall is a major factor influencing soil moisture throughout this region with soil moisture in the upper layers more sensitive to immediate weather conditions and soil moisture in the lower layers showing lagged responses to the weather conditions. This study can not only reveal the spatiotemporal and vertical characteristics of soil moisture across this region, but also provide a useful reference dataset for the other soil moisture modeling and retrieval studies. Abstract α-Fe 2 O 3 grains grafted onto TiO 2 /carbon nanofibers (CNFs) for use as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries have been successfully fabricated by electrospinning and vapor-solid reaction (VSR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms reveal that the ultrafine α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were formed on the TiO 2 /CNFs and have uniform dispersion along the fiber direction. The VSR approach could retard nucleation, thus making TiO 2 /CNFs with small Fe 2 O 3 grains grafting (approximately 5 nm in diameter). The TiO 2 /CNFs are capable of buffering the large volume variation of α-Fe 2 O 3 during cycling and preventing electrode pulverization and aggregation, as well as providing sufficiently large interstitial space within the crystallographic structure to host Li ions. The electrochemical properties of the composite electrodes were tested by galvanostatic cycling at both constant and variable current rates. The composite delivers both good rate capability under an uprated current density of 1000 mA g−1 and especially enhanced cycle stability (∼600 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 1000 mA g−1). The super electrochemical performance is attributed to a synergetic effect between α-Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 -CNFs as well as the three- dimensional (3D) network, which contributes to greatly enhanced diffusion kinetics and structural stability for lithium-ion batteries. To develop natural product resources from the Clausena genus (Rutaceae), the essential oils (EOs) from four Clausena plants (Clausena excavata, C. lansium, C. emarginata, and C. dunniana) were analyzed by GC-MS. Their lethal (contact toxicity) and sublethal effects (repellency) against Liposcelis bostrychophila (LB) adults were also evaluated. Santalene sesquiterpene was the precursor substance of santalol, a valuable perfumery. It was found that plenty of α-santalol (31.7%) and α-santalane (19.5%) contained in C. lansium from Guangxi Province and α-santalene (1.5%) existed in C. emarginata. Contact toxicity of the four EOs was observed, especially C. dunniana (LD50 = 37.26 µg/cm2). Santalol (LD50 = 30.26 µg/cm2) and estragole (LD50 = 30.22 µg/cm2) were the two most toxic compounds. In repellency assays, C. excavate, C. lansium, and C. emarginata exhibited repellent effect at the dose of 63.17 nL/cm2 2 h after exposure (percentage repellencies were 100%, 98%, and 96%, respectively). Four Clausena EOs and santalol had an excellent potential for application in the management of LB. Clausena plants could be further developed to find more resources of natural products. Land-atmosphere energy and moisture exchanges exert great impacts on local and regional climate. However, high uncertainties exist in the recent land–atmosphere interactions due to scarce observations and difficulties in modeling at high elevations and cold regions. This study applied multiple high-resolution reanalysis products (ERA5-land, GLDAS Noah and CLSM products) and one regional climate model, RegCM4, to diagnose the interaction pattern and strength of seasonal soil moisture and hydroclimate on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) using a conditional correlation coefficient method and the global land–atmosphere coupling experimental modeling approach. A compound aggregation method is applied to recognize hot spots with strong soil moisture-hydroclimate interactions among multiple data. As a result, the Changtang Plateau in the inner TP, the sources of the Yellow, Yangtze, Mekong, Salween, and Lancang Rivers and part of the Brahmaputra River basin in the south-southeastern TP are diagnosed with strong land–atmosphere interactions in most seasons. In summer, the coupling strength is stronger, and the covered area is much wider and spatially continuous as the climate turns warm. All applied data indicate a positive dominant soil moisture-precipitation feedback, and a negative soil moisture-temperature feedback at the hot spots. Meanwhile, the soil moisture-runoff feedback is strong and positive at most parts of the TP, especially at the hot spots and in summer. Evapotranspiration acts as a positive linkage in the soil moisture-precipitation-temperature interactions, while the nexus of soil moisture, evapotranspiration and runoff is complicated. This study contributes to understanding local land-hydroclimate interactions in the high elevation and cold climate of the TP. Glaciers, lakes, rivers, and vegetation are particularly sensitive to the change of precipitation in the transition zone between arid and humid regions of the Tibetan Plateau. This study analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution of precipitation and its mechanisms under dynamic and thermodynamic processes based on in situ and satellite precipitation data of the Tibetan Plateau. The results indicate that the proportion of areas with annual precipitation <400 mm or >2000 mm decreases, while the proportion of areas with annual precipitation between 400 and 2000 mm increases from 1998 to 2018. This shows that precipitation in arid, semi-arid, and semi-humid regions exhibits an increasing trend, while that in southeastern humid regions exhibits a decreasing trend. Moreover, the dynamic process has a stronger effect on the change of precipitation than the thermodynamic one. In particular, the former is twice as strong as the latter, indicating that the atmospheric circulation wind has a more significant impact on the precipitation change. Although the arid, semi-arid, and semi-humid regions show a wetting trend, their physical mechanisms are different. This paper compares the historical simulations and future projections of surface air temperature over the Tibetan Plateau of the updated Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase (CMIP6) and the precedent phase of the project (CMIP5) to quantify differences in the projections under different scenarios. Model evaluation for the historical period (1961–2005) indicates that the multi-model ensemble (MME) mean of CMIP6 outperforms CMIP5 MME in simulating spatial–temporal characteristics of surface air temperature. The temperature changes relative to 1986–2005 are projected in the near-term (2021–2040), mid-term (2041–2060), and long-term (2081–2100) future under Shared Socio-economic Pathway (SSP)2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 of CMIP6 and Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP)4.5 and RCP8.5 of CMIP5. The projected temperature shows larger increases in the long-term projection compared with the near- and mid-term projection under both SSPs and RCPs. CMIP6 MME projects higher temperature changes and accelerated warming trends relative to CMIP5 MME. Additionally, the projected temperature increases and warming rates show a significant elevation dependency, especially in the long-term projection. The uncertainty for future projections is quantified by the square root of error variance (SREV) method. The results record a clear reduction in the uncertainty of CMIP6 temperature relative to CMIP5 primarily concentrated at the elevation zones of over 5000 m. The analysis of the projected temperature over the Tibetan Plateau is of great significance for policy-makers to make socio-economic adjustments for the future warming. The regional drought predictability is strongly influenced by teleconnections factors. Among them, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is important to drought occurrence. However, it is still not fully understood how the probability of regional droughts corresponding to different ENSO regimes varies with time lags. In this study, the event-based coincidence analysis (ECA) is employed to statistically derive the relationships regarding time information and magnitude between conventional ENSO (c-ENSO)/ENSO Modoki (ENSO_M) episodes and drought events. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) based on station-records is used to determine meteorological droughts. Our study focuses on the largest freshwater lake of China, Poyang Lake basin (PLB), as severe droughts have occurred there frequently. Results indicate that the summer-autumn continuous drought dominates the severe droughts, with a frequent onset in August/September, and a cessation in October/November. The likelihood of drought occurrence is highest during cool phases of c-ENSO (CEN), followed by warm ENSO_M (WEM), warm c-ENSO (WEN), and cool ENSO_M (CEM). The influence of WEN/WEM on droughts is statistically significant mostly for a time lag of 10 months, whereas CEN/CEM shows no lagged influence. Furthermore, the variability of the 850 hPa wind anomalies during different ENSO episodes at various time lags is corresponding to the lagged influence of ENSO on droughts. The development and persistence of droughts is resulting from strengthened northeasterly wind anomalies over the PLB. ABSTRACT Given the availability of a new generation of general circulation model simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 ( CMIP5) archive, we attempt to evaluate the model output by using three variants of the transformed Mielke measure to assess (1) the performance of the models in simulating historical surface temperature and precipitation, (2) the climate change response of the models to future greenhouse gases ( GHGs) scenarios, and (3) the consistency of the projected change of each model with that of the multi-model ensemble ( MME) mean. Most models exhibited varying degrees of skills, depending on the region and season, whereas a few models were identified as performing well globally, including the CMCC models, IPSL-CM5A-MR, and BCC-CSM1.1M. Models with the highest and lowest climate sensitivities, as well as those that project future climate changes most resembling the MME mean, were identified. The future precipitation and temperature changes projected by the MPI models and NCAR-CESM1 models were found to best resemble the overall MME. Finer resolution was found to improve model performance in simulating historical climate in most regions and seasons, particularly for temperature; however, it does not have a significant effect on the response of model climates to future GHGs scenarios. We found that no model can simultaneously exhibits good performance in simulating historical climate and in projecting a future climate that is close to the MME mean. Determining the 'best' overall model is difficult because 'best' is dependent on the specific applications for which a model will be used. Evaluating climate models is an important step to build confidence in their application for impact assessment. The recent (1970-1999) and future (2070-2099) climates under the SRES A1B scenario, simulated by the regional climate model RegCM4.0 driven with lateral boundary conditions from the ECHAM5 general circulation model, are utilized to force a large-scale hydrological model for assessing the hydrological response to climate changes in the Yangtze River Basin, China. The variable infiltration capacity model (VIC) is utilized to simulate various hydrological components for examining the changes in streamflow at various locations throughout the Yangtze River Basin. In the end of the twenty-first century, most of the Yangtze River Basin stands out as 'hotspots' of climate change in China, with an annual temperature increase of approximately 3.5 °C, an increase of annual precipitation in North and a decrease in South. Runoff in the upper reach of Yangtze River is projected to increase throughout the year in the future, especially in spring when the increase will be approximately 30 %. Runoff from the catchments in the northern part of Yangtze River will increase by approximately 10 %, whereas that in the southern part will decrease, especially in the dry season, following precipitation changes. The frequency of extreme floods at three mainstream stations (Cuntan, Yichang, and Datong) is projected to increase significantly. The original extreme floods with return periods of 50, 20, and 10 years will change into floods with return periods of no more than 20, 10, and 5 years. Accurate soil moisture information is useful in agricultural practice, weather forecasting, and various hydrological applications. Although land surface modeling provides a viable approach to simulating soil moisture, many factors such as errors in the precipitation can affect the accuracy of soil moisture simulations. This paper examined how precipitation rate and evapotranspiration rate affect the accuracy of soil moisture simulation using simple biosphere model with and without data assimilation through ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF). For each of the two variables, seven levels of relative errors (−20, −10, −5, 0, 5, 10 and 20 %) were introduced independently, thus a total of 49 combined cases were investigated. Observations from Wudaogou Hydrology Experimental site in the Huaihe River basin, China, were used to drive and verify the simulations. Results indicate that when the error of precipitation rate is within 10 % of the observations, the resulting error in soil moisture simulations is less significant and manageable, thus the simulated precipitation can be used to drive hydrological models in poorly gauged catchments when observations are not available. When the error of evapotranspiration rate is within 20 % of the observations, which is partly caused by model structural and parameterization errors, its impact on soil moisture simulation is less significant and can be acceptable. Genetic modification is an important tool in embryonic stem (ES) cell research and requires efficient promoter systems. Here, we have compared the transcriptional activities of three ubiquitous promoters, elongation factor-1α(EF1α), phosphoglycerate kinase-1 (PGK), and cytomegalovirus (CMV), during propagation and differentiation of mouse (m) ES cells by using stable mES cell lines expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) under each of these promoters. In undifferentiated ES cells, the EGFP expression driven by the EF1αwas most stable, followed by the PGK, whereas the down-regulation of EGFP expression driven by the CMV promoter was most significant during propagation up to passage 35. A similar pattern for the activities of these promoters was observed in embryoid bodies (EBs) during 14 days of differentiation, with brighter EGFP signals driven by the EF1αpromoter versus the other two. Moreover, the EF1αand PGK promoters, but not CMV, were effective in almost all mES cell-differentiated neuronal cells, cardiomyocytes, and visceral endoderm cells, with the fluorescent signal intensity higher for EF1αand even for PGK. The CMV promoter yielded a weak fluorescent signal in about 60–80 of these differentiated cells, while a few differentiated cells with the CMV promoter showed bright EGFP expression like that with the EF1αpromoter. These results extend previous observations for the activities of these promoters in mES cells and provide new information for choosing appropriate promoters to facilitate genetic modification of mES cells. Background: Many kinetochore proteins have been shown to be associated with human cancers. The aim of the present study was to clarify the expression of Centromere protein H (CENP-H), one of the fundamental components of the human active kinetochore, in esophageal carcinoma and its correlation with clinicopathological features. Methods: We examined the expression of CENP-H in immortalized esophageal epithelial cells as well as in esophageal carcinoma cells, and in 12 cases of esophageal carcinoma tissues and the paired normal esophageal tissues by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. In addition, we analyzed CENP-H protein expression in 177 clinicopathologically characterized esophageal carcinoma cases by immunohistochemistry. Statistical analyses were applied to test for prognostic and diagnostic associations. Results: The level of CENP-H mRNA and protein were higher in the immortalized cells, cancer cell lines and most cancer tissues than in normal control tissues. Immunohistochemistry showed that CENP-H was expressed in 127 of 171 ESCC cases (74.3%) and in 3 of 6 esophageal adenocarcinoma cases (50%). Statistical analysis of ESCC cases showed that there was a significant difference of CENP-H expression in patients categorized according to gender (P = 0.013), stage (P = 0.023) and T classification (P = 0.019). Patients with lower CENP-H expression had longer overall survival time than those with higher CENP-H expression. Multivariate analysis suggested that CENP-H expression was an independent prognostic marker for esophageal carcinoma patients. A prognostic value of CENP-H was also found in the subgroup of T3~T4 and N0 tumor classification. The topography of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays an important role in the formation of the Asian monsoon as well as global climate change. In particular, the water vapor transport patters shows redistribution under the influence of high mountains, which profoundly impacts the landscape of the local and surrounding areas. Based on satellite precipitation data of global precipitation measurements from 2015 to 2018, the influence of the topography on the spatial and temporal distributions of the precipitation in the TP was evaluated. The results show that the precipitation distribution is clearly affected by the topography, and decreases from southeast to northwest. Precipitation mainly concentrates in the southern foothills of the Himalayas. In the hinterland of the TP, the gradient distance increases from southeast to northwest, with value changes from 100 mm / 60 km to 100 mm / 150 km. The maximum annual precipitation height in the windward side of the TP (west of Tianshan Mountains, south of Himalayas, and southwest of Hengduan Mountains) is below 2000 m, while in the northern and inner areas, it exceeds 4000 m. The precipitation isoline in the south and northwest of the TP is consistent with the elevation contour. The impact on the hydrologic cycle of permafrost degradation under the influence of climate change has caused an inestimable threat to sustainable regulation of the ecosystem. This study quantified the responses of main hydrological elements, including soil moisture, groundwater, runoff components and discharge to totally degraded permafrost in eastern High Asia by establishing cases with and without thermodynamics using a cold region model combining hydrological processes and thermodynamics. The results showed that the model successfully simulated discharge in cold region basins. Totally degraded permafrost decreased soil moisture in the vadose zone (SMV) and increased the absolute depth to ground water (ADGW). In the daily scale, total permafrost degradation decreased the direct flow in autumn, slightly increased direct flow in spring and decreased interflow in summer. Total permafrost degradation also increased daily baseflow all year round and by >50% in spring, decreased daily discharge during autumn and increased daily discharge during spring. In the annual scale, total permafrost degradation increased direct flow, baseflow, and discharge, and decreased interflow. The magnitudes of these changes were positively related to the ratios of permafrost to the subbasin area. The responses of daily runoff components and discharge to totally degraded permafrost were significantly larger than the annual value. The groundwater level, direct flow and baseflow were far more sensitive to permafrost degradation than SMV, interflow and discharge. The responses of annual individual hydrological elements were more obvious than the annual discharge. These quantified results can be extensively used in lumped hydrology simulations, water resource assessments and eco-system management for partial permafrost degradation. • Developed a new filter method – unscented weighted ensemble Kalman filter (UWEnKF). • UWEnKF is a highly effective and practical assimilation technique. • UWEnKF has better performance than EnKF. A new data assimilation technique, unscented weighted ensemble Kalman filter (UWEnKF) was developed based on the scaled unscented transformation and ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF). In UWEnKF, the individual members selected are unequally weighted and symmetric about the expectation. To investigate the performance of UWEnKF, nine assimilation experiments with different ensemble sizes (161, 1601, 16001) and different assimilation frequencies (every 6 h, every 12 h, every 24 h) were designed to assimilate soil surface (5 cm) moisture data observed at station HY in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, in the northeastern of Tibetan plateau, China into the Richards equation. The results showed that the performance of the filter was greatly affected by random noise, and the filter was sensitive to ensemble size and assimilation frequency. Increasing the ensemble size reduced the effects of random noise on filter performance in several independent assimilation runs (i.e., it decreased the differences between the results of the several independent assimilation runs). Reducing the assimilation frequency also reduced the effects of random noise on filter performance. UWEnKF gave more accurate soil moisture model results than EnKF for all ensemble sizes and assimilation frequencies at all soil depths. Additionally, EnKF may have different performances according to different initial conditions, but not for UWEnKF. Precipitation and soil properties uncertainties had some impact on filter performance. Thus, UWEnKF is a better choice than EnKF, while it is more computationally demanding, for improving soil moisture predictions by assimilating data from many sources, such as satellite-observed soil moisture data, at a low assimilation frequency (e.g., every 24 h). Extreme events such as rainstorms and floods are likely to increase in frequency due to the influence of global warming, which is expected to put considerable pressure on water resources. This paper presents a regional frequency analysis of precipitation extremes and its spatio-temporal pattern characteristics based on well-known index-flood L-moments methods and the application of advanced statistical tests and spatial analysis techniques. The results indicate the following conclusions. First, during the period between 1969 and 2015, the annual precipitation extremes at Fengjie station show a decreasing trend, but the Wuhan station shows an increasing trend, and the other 24 stations have no significant trend at a 5% confidence level. Secondly, the Hanjiang River Basin can be categorized into three homogenous regions by hierarchical clustering analysis with the consideration of topography and mean precipitation in these areas. The GEV, GNO, GPA and P III distributions fit better for most of the basin and MARE values range from 3.19% to 6.41% demonstrating that the best-fit distributions for each homogenous region is adequate in predicting the quantiles estimates. Thirdly, quantile estimates are reliable enough when the return period is less than 100 years, however estimates for a higher return period (e.g., 1000 years) become unreliable. Further, the uncertainty of quantiles estimations is growing with the growing return periods and the estimates based on R95P series have a smaller uncertainty to describe the extreme precipitation in the Hanjiang river basin (HJRB). Furthermore, In the HJRB, most of the extreme precipitation events (more than 90%) occur during the rainy season between May and October, and more than 30% of these extreme events concentrate in July, which is mainly impacted by the sub-tropical monsoon climate. Finally, precipitation extremes are mainly concentrated in the areas of Du River, South River and Daba Mountain in region I and Tianmen, Wuhan and Zhongxiang stations in region III, located in the upstream of Danjiangkou Reservoir and Jianghan Plain respectively. There areas provide sufficient climate conditions (e.g., humidity and precipitation) responsible for the occurring floods and will increase the risk of natural hazards to these areas. Background: Many kinetochore proteins have been shown to be associated with human cancers. The aim of the present study was to clarify the expression of Centromere protein H (CENP-H), one of the fundamental components of the human active kinetochore, in esophageal carcinoma and its correlation with clinicopathological features.Methods: We examined the expression of CENP-H in immortalized esophageal epithelial cells as well as in esophageal carcinoma cells, and in 12 cases of esophageal carcinoma tissues and the paired normal esophageal tissues by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. In addition, we analyzed CENP-H protein expression in 177 clinicopathologically characterized esophageal carcinoma cases by immunohistochemistry. Statistical analyses were applied to test for prognostic and diagnostic associations.Results: The level of CENP-H mRNA and protein were higher in the immortalized cells, cancer cell lines and most cancer tissues than in normal control tissues. Immunohistochemistry showed that CENP-H was expressed in 127 of 171 ESCC cases (74.3%) and in 3 of 6 esophageal adenocarcinoma cases (50%). Statistical analysis of ESCC cases showed that there was a significant difference of CENP-H expression in patients categorized according to gender (P = 0.013), stage (P = 0.023) and T classification (P = 0.019). Patients with lower CENP-H expression had longer overall survival time than those with higher CENP-H expression. Multivariate analysis suggested that CENP-H expression was an independent prognostic marker for esophageal carcinoma patients. A prognostic value of CENP-H was also found in the subgroup of T3 approximately T4 and N0 tumor classification.Conclusion: Our results suggest that CENP-H protein is a valuable marker of esophageal carcinoma progression.
