Calderón da un papel clave a don Juan de Austria en Amar después de la muerte, pieza donde trata la rebelión de los moriscos en 1568-1571. El dramaturgo insiste en su condición de hijo del emperador Carlos V e invierte la secuencia de los hechos históricos al presentarlo como vencedor de Lepanto. Su don Juan de Austria evoluciona de jefe militar a dirigente político. Calderón puede abordar así un tema candente, la necesidad de dar prioridad a la conservación sobre la reputación en la monarquía de los Austrias, con planteamientos teóricos afines a la Escuela de Salamanca.

2. The Spanish ballad of Helen of Troy in the 16th century

Abstract

Abstract: The Spanish ballad of Helen of Troy has been transmitted in five chapbooks of the 16th century. An analysis shows that all of them derive from an already faulty common ascendant, presumably a lost chapbook. A critical edition of the poem is presented, and a study follows. This ballad uses imagery first introduced in Spanish vernacular literature by devotional poetry, namely Fray Íñigo de Mendoza’s Coplas “De vita Christi”, the date of which is pinpointed to 1474, and Diego de San Pedro’s La Passión trobada, also composed in the 1470s. A study of the sources for this ballad shows that it is mainly based either on the Corónica troyana (a Castilian translation of Guido delle Colonne’s Historia destructionis Troiae ascribed here to Pero López de Ayala’s initiative, fragmentarily preserved) or on the Crónica troyana first printed in 1490 (a text combining the 14th-century Sumas de historia troyana attributed to Leomarte and the above-mentioned Corónica troyana). Despite the lack of conclusive evidence, the most likely explanation is that there was a first fashion of Trojan ballads ca. 1491 inspired by the incunabular Crónica troyana. The ballad onthe Abduction of Helen, as well as the contemporary one on the Judgment of Paris, were composed at that time, becoming quickly popular and entering Sephardic oral tradition.Keywords: ballads, matter of Troy, chapbooks, textual criticism.

Abstract

La utilizacion por autores extranjeros de Amar despues de la muerte, pieza tambien conocida como El Tuzani de la Alpujarra, no solo indica la importancia de Calderon en el desarrollo de las tradiciones teatrales europeas, sino que tambien llega a iluminar la naturaleza de su arte dramatico. Por una parte, Thomas Corneille incorporo en Les Illustres ennemis una seccion del citado drama, demostrando que su conflicto de honor resultaba autonomo respecto a la accion principal sobre la rebelion de las Alpujarras; esta comedie a l’espagnole, estrenada en 1655, implica ademas la existencia de una suelta calderoniana mas temprana hoy perdida, pero probablemente relacionada con una conservada en la British Library. Por otra parte, el poeta ruso Vil’gel’m Kjuxel’beker adapto Amar despues de la muerte como libreto de opera a traves de la traduccion francesa de La Beaumelle, publicada en 1822; despues de muchas reflexiones, conservo varias invenciones calderonianas en un trabajo marcado por los ideales decembristas que seria censurado en 1824.

Abstract

This monograph deals with illuminated manuscripts created in French-speaking regions from the mid-thirteenth to the mid-fifteenth century, i.e., from the earliest narratives of Marian miracles written in Old French to the codices produced at the Burgundian court at the waning of the Middle Ages. Its focus, however, is very specific: it is a systematic analysis of the miniatures depicting both material representations of the Virgin (mainly sculptures, but also icons, panel paintings, altarpieces or reliquaries) and the miracles performed by them, usually as Mary’s reaction to a prayer (or an insult) to one of Her images.

Abstract

El grado de fiabilidad de las ediciones de las piezas de Calderon preparadas por Juan de Vera Tassis constituye uno de los temas mas controvertidos dentro de la critica textual del teatro del Siglo de Oro. Un notable ejemplo es El Tuzani del Alpujarra, impreso por primera vez en la desautorizada Quinta parte de 1677 y despues editado por Vera Tassis con el titulo de Amar despues de la muerte en su Novena parte de 1691. A pesar de las objeciones realizadas acerca de este texto, las ultimas ediciones criticas de la obra se decantan abiertamente por el. Una revision mas detallada de los testimonios conservados, sin embargo, muestra que todos derivan de una sola copia defectuosa y ofrece claros indicios de que Vera Tassis preparo su edicion a partir del texto de 1677 y otro aun mas defectuoso, aunque con algunas lecciones superiores.

Abstract

The Història de Jacob Xalabín, an anonymous novel written in Catalan c.1400, focuses on the figure of the Ottoman prince Yakub Çelebi, son of Murad I and half-brother of Bayezid I. It ends with the first detailed account of the battle of Kosovo of 1389, which left a lasting mark on the history of the Balkans.This text, mixing historical and fictional elements, is one of the earliest depictions in Western Literature of the rising Ottoman empire. Because of this, it is most relevant for Mediterranean studies and debates about orientalism. Juan Carlos Bayo has prepared a new critical edition of this novel, with an introduction and notes, and Barry Taylor offers its first translation ever into the English language. The volume is completed with an appendix of texts and documents on the Turkish connections of the Crown of Aragon.
