Abstract

Introducción. Un gran número de estudios clínicos prospectivos, randomizados en nutrición en cuidado crítico, han demostrado en forma concluyente que NO es necesario (ni beneficioso) llegar a las metas calóricas durante la primera semana en la UCI. En lugar de eso, es importante incrementar lentamente el aporte proteico para llegar a entregar 1.3 g/k/d hacia el día 5-7. Estos cambios en el paradigma son reflejados en las nuevas guías internacionales. Objetivos. Evaluar las prácticas clínicas en cuidado nutricional en la UCI en Latino América, con énfasis en determinar la adopción de las nuevas guías. Métodos. Se diseñó una encuesta electrónica (Google Forms) que se distribuyó a través de las diferentes sociedades de nutrición en Latino América, con énfasis en clínicos que tuvieran prácticas en nutrición del paciente de cuidado crítico. Resultados. Un total de 172 encuestas fueron completadas. La mayoría de los clínicos entrevistados tenían más de 10 años de experiencia en cuidado crítico. La mayoría de los clínicos expresaron haber cambiado su práctica clínica reduciendo el énfasis en intentar llegar a metas calóricas tradicionales y en incrementar el aporte proteico. La mayoría de los clínicos expresaron que la adopción de la terapia nutricional en los primeros 7 días de estancia en la UCI mejoraba los resultados clínicos y la mayoría todavía utilizaban una terapia nutricional basada en volumen. Conclusiones. Existe una adopción parcial de las nuevas guías nutricionales en cuidado crítico. Este trabajo nos permite entender mejor como asistir en la educación para que los clínicos abandonen viejos paradigmas y adopten nuevas ideas y conceptos en sus prácticas clínicas.

2. A New Linear Model for the Calculation of Routing Metrics in 802.11s Using ns-3 and RStudio

Abstract

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) offer a pragmatic solution with a cost-effective ratio when provisioning ubiquitous broadband internet access and diverse telecommunication systems. The conceptual underpinning of mesh networks finds application not only in IEEE networks, but also in 3GPP networks like LTE and the low-power wide area network (LPWAN) tailored for the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT) landscape. IEEE 802.11s is well known for its facto standard for WMN, which defines the hybrid wireless mesh protocol (HWMP) as a layer-2 routing protocol and airtime link (ALM) as a metric. In this intricate landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) plays a prominent role in the industry, particularly within the technology and telecommunication realms. This study presents a novel methodology for the computation of routing metrics, specifically the ALM. This methodology implements the network simulator ns-3 and the RStudio as a statistical computing environment for data analysis. The former has enabled for the creation of scripts that elicit a variety of scenarios for WMN where information is gathered and stored in databases. The latter (RStudio) takes this information, and at this point, two linear predictions are supported. The first uses linear models (lm) and the second employs general linear models (glm). To conclude this process, statistical tests are applied to the original model, as well as to the new suggested ones. This work substantially contributes in two ways: first, through the methodological tool for the metric calculation of the HWMP protocol that belongs to the IEEE 802.11s standard, using lm and glm for the selection and validation of the model regressors. At this stage the ANOVA and STEPWIZE tools of RStudio are used. The second contribution is a linear predictor that improves the WMN’s performance as a priori mechanism before the use of the ns-3 simulator. The ANCOVA tool of RStudio is employed in the latter.

Abstract

La Agenda 2030 y sus objetivos de desarrollo sostenible, así como también la responsabilidad social empresarial, buscan el cambio de paradigma que conduzca a un progreso sostenible en los ámbitos, social, económico y ambiental. Esto implica un compromiso donde actores como el Estado, comunidad civil, academia, empresas públicas y privadas, juegan un rol fundamental. El objetivo de esta investigación es describir la responsabilidad social empresarial en Ecuador a partir de la Agenda 2030. El artículo se desarrolló desde el paradigma cualitativo utilizando la revisión documental, teórica y jurídica. Como resultado, en Ecuador existe un interés acentuado de las empresas hacia el cumplimiento de la responsabilidad social, encaminando acciones cónsonas con el desarrollo sostenible y los objetivos de desarrollo declarados a nivel mundial. A pesar de ello, se requiere de mayor socialización y empoderamiento de la normativa contemplada en la Agenda 2030, para evitar el incumplimiento cabal de sus objetivos. Se concluye, que la responsabilidad social empresarial en Ecuador, responde a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sustentables y aporta elementos significativos para las dimensiones económicas, políticas, sociales, ambientales y éticas de las empresas, quienes deben asumirlas como ejes transversales de su sistema de gestión; lo cual permitirá potenciar el desarrollo del país.

5. Evaluación de la formación de andradita y carbonatos de calcio durante la síntesis de un geopolímero a partir de escoria blanca y negra

Abstract

En este artículo se evalúa la influencia de la andradita en la resistencia mecánica de un geopolímero sintetizado a partir de escoria blanca de horno convertidor y escoria negra de horno eléctrico. Como activadores se utilizó hidróxido de sodio 12 M y silicato de sodio 5 M. El hidróxido de sodio se mantuvo constante en 5% y en 15% en silicato de sodio. Se añadió material cerámico en proporciones del 5%,10%, 15% y 20%. El curado de la pasta se hizo a temperatura ambiente durante 24 horas. El tamaño de partículas de la escoria blanca y del material cerámico fue de 150 μm. Se utilizó XDR y MEB para analizar los posibles mecanismos de formación de la andradita y del carbonato de calcio. Se fallaron las muestras en la maquina universal de ensayos. Se determinó la influencia de los compuestos químicos formados en la resistencia a la compresión. Los resultados indican que las condiciones propuestas son adecuadas para la formación estructuras cristalinas propias de los materiales geopoliméricos.

Abstract

Este artículo es parte de los resultados de una investigación para conocer el proceso de gestión de la integración social de la investigación de nueve instituciones de educación superior co lombianas. En la investigación se analizaron 21 proyectos de investigación de diferentes áreas de conocimiento y tipo de investigaciones (básica, aplicada e I+D+I). Las técnicas e instrumentos utilizados fueron la entrevista semiestrucrurada o enfocada, el grupo focal y análisis documental. Los resultados muestran que la integración es un proceso complejo que implica transferencia y apropiación y que para que exista una gestión de la integración del conocimiento se necesita no solamente una capacidad de gestión sobre los diferentes temas involucrados en la integración (intencionalidad, actores, estructuras organizacionales), sino que adicionalmente existan requerimientos y exigencias muy concretas en las políticas de Estado para el fomento a la investigación.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:Trauma/hemorrhagic shock (T/HS) results in cytokine-mediated acute inflammation that is generally considered detrimental. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:Paradoxically, plasma levels of the early inflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha (but not IL-6, IL-10, or NO(2) (-)/NO(3) (-)) were significantly elevated within 6 h post-admission in 19 human trauma survivors vs. 4 non-survivors. Moreover, plasma TNF-alpha was inversely correlated with Marshall Score, an index of organ dysfunction, both in the 23 patients taken together and in the survivor cohort. Accordingly, we hypothesized that if an early, robust pro-inflammatory response were to be a marker of an appropriate response to injury, then individuals exhibiting such a response would be predisposed to survive. We tested this hypothesis in swine subjected to various experimental paradigms of T/HS. Twenty-three anesthetized pigs were subjected to T/HS (12 HS-only and 11 HS + Thoracotomy; mean arterial pressure of 30 mmHg for 45-90 min) along with surgery-only controls. Plasma obtained at pre-surgery, baseline post-surgery, beginning of HS, and every 15 min thereafter until 75 min (in the HS only group) or 90 min (in the HS + Thoracotomy group) was assayed for TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-10, and NO(2) (-)/NO(3) (-). Mean post-surgery+/-HS TNF-alpha levels were significantly higher in the survivors vs. non-survivors, while non-survivors exhibited no measurable change in TNF-alpha levels over the same interval. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:Contrary to the current dogma, survival in the setting of severe, acute T/HS appears to be associated with an immediate increase in serum TNF-alpha. It is currently unclear if this response was the cause of this protection, a marker of survival, or both. This abstract won a Young Investigator Travel Award at the SHOCK 2008 meeting in Cologne, Germany.

Determinar la relación entre el consumo de anticonceptivos orales y la prevalencia y severidad de la endometriosis en pacientes sometidas a laparoscopia por cualquier causa en Profamilia Medellín, entre julio de 1998 y abril de 1999. El 24.8% del grupo que recibió anticonceptivos tenía endometriosis comparado con el 44.5% del grupo que no los recibió. No hubo asociación entre el consumo deanticonceptivos y el grado, tipo o localización de las lesiones. Tampoco se encontró asociación entre tiempo de uso, dosis y tiempo de suspensión de los anticonceptivos con la prevalencia de endometriosis.

Abstract

Background Following the publication of 2014 consensus statement regarding mass critical care during public health emergencies, much has been learned about surge responses and the care of overwhelming numbers of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.1 Gaps in prior pandemic planning were identified and require modification in the midst of ongoing surge throughout the world. Methods The Task Force for Mass Critical Care (TFMCC) adopted a modified version of established rapid guideline methodologies from the World Health Organization2 and the Guidelines International Network-McMaster Guideline Development Checklist.3 With a consensus development process incorporating expert opinion to define important questions and extract evidence, TFMCC developed relevant pandemic surge suggestions in a structured manner, incorporating peer-reviewed literature, “gray” evidence from lay media sources, and anecdotal experiential evidence. Results Ten suggestions were identified regarding staffing, load-balancing, communication, and technology. Staffing models are suggested with resilience strategies to support critical care staff. Intensive care unit (ICU) surge strategies and strain indicators are suggested to enhance ICU prioritization tactics to maintain contingency level care and avoid crisis triage, with early transfer strategies to further load-balance care. We suggest intensivists and hospitalists be engaged with the incident command structure to ensure two-way communication, situational awareness, and the use of technology to support critical care delivery and families of patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Conclusions A subcommittee from the Task Force for Mass Critical Care offers interim evidence-informed operational strategies to assist hospitals and communities to plan for and respond to surge capacity demands from COVID-19.

Abstract

Fecal contamination in natural water sources is a common problem in low-income countries. Several health risks are associated with unprotected water sources, such as gastrointestinal infections caused by parasites, viruses, and bacteria. Moreover, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water sources have become an increasing problem worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the bacterial pathogens present in water within a rural context in Ecuador, along with the efficiency of black ceramic water filters (BCWFs) as a sustainable household water treatment. We monitored five natural water sources that were used for human consumption in the highlands of Ecuador and analyzed the total coliforms and E. coli before and after BCWF installation. The results indicated a variable bacterial contamination (29–300 colony-forming units/100mL) in all unfiltered samples, and they were considered as high risk for human consumption, but after filtration, no bacteria were present. Moreover, extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli with blaTEM, blaCTX-M9, and blaCTX-M1 genes, and two E. coli classified in the clonal complex ST10 (ST98) were detected in two of the locations sampled; these strains can severely impact public health. The clonal complex ST10, found in the E. coli isolates, possesses the potential to spread bacteria-resistant genes to humans and animals. The results of the use of BCWFs, however, argue for the filters’ potential impact within those contexts, as the BCWFs completely removed even antibiotic-resistant contaminants from the water.

Abstract

Purpose EEG is a common diagnostic tool to localize epileptic activity with excellent temporal resolution and, however, with relatively low spatial resolution. High-density EEG recording is limited in clinical practice, mainly because of electrode placement difficulties, need of high technical skills, and advanced equipment requirement. Methods We described the technique of long-term EEG recording using a 128-channel neoprene cap placed with a dielectric paste in 7 patients with refractory epilepsy. We captured electrographic seizures in six of seven patients. The 128-channel EEG cap was well tolerated except for a mild headache. Daily impedance checks and reapplication of the high impedance leads maintained the recording with impedances below 10 kΩ. Results Successful long-term recording of high-density EEG was able to capture seizures in six of seven patients. The time needed to apply the electrodes was approximately 1 hour and approximately 30 minutes daily for maintenance. The EEG source localization was obtained in six of seven patients, concordant within the sublobar region for both standard and high-density EEG recordings. Three patients reported a mild headache not leading to discontinuation of the recording. Conclusions In general, long-term high-density scalp EEG recording with a dielectric paste is well tolerated and allows capturing both interictal and ictal data for localization. This small sample does not show a significant advantage in terms of sublobar localization when high-density EEG source is compared with standard 10 to 20 placement as long as the subtemporal areas are recorded.

Abstract

A masonry prefabricated element will be produced from the process of reusing a sludge generated by the Colombian mining industry, especially the sandstone quarries, that become pollution agents ending up in the hydric sources, impacting negatively the environment. This waste was previously stabilized with the addition of Ca(OH) and Na(OH), the optimal mixing specifications were obtained using a response surface model accomplishing low quantities of stabilizers and the use of the waste as the main component, achieving improvements in load-bearing capacity (8 MPa) and the durability according to its dimensional stability, upgrading the traditional techniques. In this work, computational simulations are performed to understand some mechanical responses in stabilized-sludge masonry elements with different geometries and to compare the simulation results with common materials in the literature. Simulation outcomes showed that hollow-block geometry saves up a considerable amount of material and improves stress distribution compared with a solid block. Also, the mechanical simulation of the stabilized-sludge elastic zone achieved a better performance than a compressed earth block, which is a similar material used in construction. This way, the design of more sustainable elements through an innovative methodology based on statistics, mathematical and computational models, saving materials, time, and energy is sought, generating an economic and environmental impact.

Abstract

In this work, a prefabricated masonry element is produced by reusing a residual sludge generated by the Colombian mining industry, especially the sandstone quarries. The addition of Ca (OH) 2 and NaOH stabilizes this waste. Application of a response surface model results in optimal admixture specifications, achieving improvements in load capacity (8 MPa) and durability according to its dimensional stability, upgrading the traditional techniques. Albeit remains a lack in the study of its thermal behavior. Thus, A heat transfer analysis employing computational simulations based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) is applied to predict the thermal performance of manufactured elements with stabilized quarry sludge (SQS). Besides, several construction materials are simulated, allowing their contrast and the complement between simulation and experimentation, pointing to the achievement of a good performance in different climatic conditions, including actual city case characteristics. It is concluded that according to SQS block thermal performance, it can be a suitable building element candidate. Hence, more sustainable processes in the mining and construction production chain can be achieved.

Abstract

Purpose: Super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) presents management challenges due to the absence of randomized controlled trials and a plethora of potential medical therapies. The literature on treatment options for SRSE reports variable success and quality of evidence. This review is a sequel to the 2020 American Epilepsy Society (AES) comprehensive review of the treatment of convulsive refractory status epilepticus (RSE). Methods: We sought to determine the effectiveness of treatment options for SRSE. We performed a structured literature search (MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL) for studies on reported treatments of SRSE. We excluded antiseizure medications (ASMs) covered in the 2016 AES guideline on the treatment of established SE and the convulsive RSE comprehensive review of the 2020 AES. Literature was reviewed on the effectiveness of vagus nerve stimulation, ketogenic diet (KD), lidocaine, inhalation anesthetics, brain surgery, therapeutic hypothermia, perampanel, pregabalin (PGB), and topiramate in the treatment of SRSE. Two authors reviewed each therapeutic intervention. We graded the level of the evidence according to the 2017 classification scheme of the American Academy of Neurology. Results: For SRSE (level U; 39 class IV studies total), insufficient evidence exists to support that perampanel, PGB, lidocaine, or acute vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is effective. For children and adults with SRSE, insufficient evidence exists to support that the KD is effective (level U; 5 class IV studies). For adults with SRSE, insufficient evidence exists that brain surgery is effective (level U, 7 class IV studies). For adults with SRSE insufficient, evidence exists that therapeutic hypothermia is effective (level C, 1 class II and 4 class IV studies). For neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, insufficient evidence exists that therapeutic hypothermia reduces seizure burden (level U; 1 class IV study). For adults with SRSE, insufficient evidence exists that inhalation anesthetics are effective (level U, 1 class IV study) and that there is a potential risk of neurotoxicity. Conclusion: For patients with SRSE insufficient, evidence exists that any of the ASMs reviewed, inhalational anesthetics, ketogenic diet, acute VNS, brain surgery, and therapeutic hypothermia are effective treatments. Data supporting the use of these treatments for SRSE are scarce and limited mainly to small case series and case reports and are confounded by differences in patients’ population, and comedications, among other factors.

Abstract

The diagnosis of atypical paroxysmal events represents a significant challenge for clinicians when differentiating epileptic from nonepileptic events. The ictal manifestations of pharyngeal dysesthesias are often misdiagnosed and difficult to distinguish clinically, given their subtle features such as pharyngeal discomfort with and without autonomic symptomology. We report a rare case of isolated ictal pharyngeal dysesthesias localizing to the non-dominant frontal operculum lobe misdiagnosed as psychogenic and later confirmed by continuous video-EEG monitoring.

Abstract

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are the major proton receptor in the brain and a key mediator of acidosis-induced neuronal injuries in disease. Most of published data on ASIC function came from studies performed in mice, and relatively little is known about potential differences between human and mouse ASICs (hASIC and mASIC, respectively). This information is critical for us to better interpret the functional importance of ASICs in human disease. Here, we examined the expression of ASICs in acutely resected human cortical tissue. Compared with mouse cortex, human cortical tissue showed a similar ratio of ASIC1a:ASIC2a expression, had reduced ASIC2b level, and exhibited a higher membrane:total ratio of ASIC1a. We further investigated the mechanism for higher surface trafficking of hASIC1a in heterologous cells. A single amino acid at position 285 was critical for increased N-glycosylation and surface expression of hASIC1a. Consistent with the changes in trafficking and current, cells expressing hASIC1a or mASIC1a S285P mutant had a higher acid-activated calcium increase and exhibited worsened acidotoxicity. These data suggest that ASICs are likely to have a larger impact on acidosis-induced neuronal injuries in humans than mice, and this effect is, at least in part, a result of more efficient trafficking of hASIC1a.-Xu, Y., Jiang, Y.-Q., Li, C., He, M., Rusyniak, W. Resumen La esporotricosis es la micosis subcutánea o por implantación más frecuente en México. Se comunica el caso de una esporotricosis cutánea-fija preauricular que simuló una celulitis bacteriana atípica, en una paciente anciana sin antecedente de traumatismo. La biopsia mostró un granuloma supurativo con presencia de levaduras escasas. En el cultivo se identificó Sporothrix schenckii que se confirmó por biología molecular. Se trató con itraconazol obteniéndose una curación clínica y micológica. Se presenta el caso de presentación atípica, proveniente de una zona semidesértica con clima extremo.

Abstract

As ictal semiology is increasingly understood to arise from epileptogenic networks, high-frequency oscillation propagation patterns are helping elucidate networks relevant for surgical planning. Musical automatisms, a well-documented but very rare phenomenon of epilepsy, have yet to be examined as a manifestation of high-frequency propagation in the public literature. In our current study, we report a rare case intractable epilepsy with ictal humming whose epileptogenic zone was associated with the non-dominant left anterior medial temporal region. Mapping our case's ictal semiology and high-frequency propagation pattern both facilitated treatment and further supports prior observations that the rare phenomena of musical automatisms localize to a non-dominant frontal-temporal network rather than a specific cortical territory.

Abstract

Digital, Background: Two glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists reduced renal outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes at risk for cardiovascular disease. We assessed the long-term effect of the GLP-1 receptor agonist dulaglutide on renal outcomes in an exploratory analysis of the REWIND trial of the effect of dulaglutide on cardiovascular disease. Methods: REWIND was a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at 371 sites in 24 countries. Men and women aged at least 50 years with type 2 diabetes who had either a previous cardiovascular event or cardiovascular risk factors were randomly assigned (1:1) to either weekly subcutaneous injection of dulaglutide (1·5 mg) or placebo and followed up at least every 6 months for outcomes. Urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratios (UACRs) and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs) were estimated from urine and serum values measured in local laboratories every 12 months. The primary outcome (first occurrence of the composite endpoint of non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes), secondary outcomes (including a composite microvascular outcome), and safety outcomes of this trial have been reported elsewhere. In this exploratory analysis, we investigate the renal component of the composite microvascular outcome, defined as the first occurrence of new macroalbuminuria (UACR >33·9 mg/mmol), a sustained decline in eGFR of 30% or more from baseline, or chronic renal replacement therapy. Analyses were by intention to treat. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01394952. Findings: Between Aug 18, 2011, and Aug 14, 2013, 9901 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive dulaglutide (n=4949) or placebo (n=4952). At baseline, 791 (7·9%) had macroalbuminuria and mean eGFR was 76·9 mL/min per 1·73 m2 (SD 22·7). During a median follow-up of 5·4 years (IQR 5·1-5·9) comprising 51 820 person-years, the renal outcome developed in 848 (17·1%) participants at an incidence rate of 3·5 per 100 person-years in the dulaglutide group and in 970 (19·6%) participants at an incidence rate of 4·1 per 100 person-years in the placebo group (hazard ratio [HR] 0·85, 95% CI 0·77-0·93; p=0·0004). Abstract

Digital, Background Three different glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists reduce cardiovascular outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk with high glycated haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) concentrations. We assessed the effect of the GLP-1 receptor agonist dulaglutide on major adverse cardiovascular events when added to the existing antihyperglycaemic regimens of individuals with type 2 diabetes with and without previous cardiovascular disease and a wide range of glycaemic control. Methods This multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was done at 371 sites in 24 countries. Men and women aged at least 50 years with type 2 diabetes who had either a previous cardiovascular event or cardiovascular risk factors were randomly assigned (1:1) to either weekly subcutaneous injection of dulaglutide (1·5 mg) or placebo. Randomisation was done by a computer-generated random code with stratification by site. All investigators and participants were masked to treatment assignment. Participants were followed up at least every 6 months for incident cardiovascular and other serious clinical outcomes. The primary outcome was the first occurrence of the composite endpoint of non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes (including unknown causes), which was assessed in the intention-to-treat population. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01394952. Findings Between Aug 18, 2011, and Aug 14, 2013, 9901 participants (mean age 66·2 years [SD 6·5], median HbA1c 7·2% [IQR 6·6–8·1], 4589 [46·3%] women) were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive dulaglutide (n=4949) or placebo (n=4952). During a median follow-up of 5·4 years (IQR 5·1–5·9), the primary composite outcome occurred in 594 (12·0%) participants at an incidence rate of 2·4 per 100 person-years in the dulaglutide group and in 663 (13·4%) participants at an incidence rate of 2·7 per 100 person-years in the placebo group (hazard ratio [HR] 0·88, 95% CI 0·79–0·99; p=0·026). Abstract

This EEG Guideline incorporates the practice of structuring a report of results obtained during routine adult electroencephalography. It is intended to reflect one of the current practices in reporting an EEG and serves as a revision of the previous guideline entitled "Writing an EEG Report." The goal of this guideline is not only to convey clinically relevant information, but also to improve interrater reliability for clinical and research use by standardizing the format of EEG reports. With this in mind, there is expanded documentation of the patient history to include more relevant clinical information that can affect the EEG recording and interpretation. Recommendations for the technical conditions of the recording are also enhanced to include post hoc review parameters and type of EEG recording. Sleep feature documentation is also expanded upon. More descriptive terms are included for background features and interictal discharges that are concordant with efforts to standardize terminology. In the clinical correlation section, examples of common clinical scenarios are now provided that encourages uniformity in reporting. Including digital samples of abnormal waveforms is now readily available with current EEG recording systems and may be beneficial in augmenting reports when controversial waveforms or important features are encountered.

46. First Detection of Leaf Blight and Stem Canker Caused by Phytophthora ramorum on Brisbane Box in the United States

Abstract

Brisbane box,Lophostemon confertus (Myrtaceae) is a frost tender evergreen tree planted for its upright form, large ovate leaves and attractive white flowers which bloom in the spring. In June of 2017, the Plant Pest Diagnostics Center lab received a call from an arborist who described Brisbane box street trees dying in central Sausalito, Marin Co., California. Trees ranged from containing 10% to nearly 80% dead hanging leaves. Six trees along the same street were affected. Wilted brown leaves remained attached to branchlets covered in black cankers. Some healthy branchlets had leaves with angular spots which crossed the veins and were surrounded by yellow halos. Isolations were made onto CMA-PARP (Jeffers and Martin, 1986) from the canker and leaf spot margins. A Phytophthora species resemblingPhytophthora ramorum grew on CMA-PARP media with coralloid coenocytic hyphae, chlamydospores, and ellipsoidal semi-papillate sporangia. The internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of rDNA was amplified and sequenced using primers PHY.OO.18F and PHY.OO.28SR (Rooney-Latham, et al. 2019). BLAST analysis of 770 base pairs of the sequenced amplicon (GenBank MK993541) showed 100% identity with the ITS sequence of the P. ramorum ex-type (MG865581). A portion of the cox2 gene was amplified and sequenced (Hudspeth et al. 2000) (GenBank MK994528) and 530 base pairs matched with 100% identity GU222130. Pathogenicity was confirmed by inoculating 3, initially 1.8-meter-tall trees in 18.9-liter pots. Prior to inoculations, trees were cut so they would fit into 122 cm high dew and growth chambers. For each tree, 3 lower branchlets measuring from 4 to10 mm in diameter were inoculated by wounding with a 6 mm punch, placing a colonized agar plugs in the wound, then wrapping with Parafilm. Lower branches were covered in plastic to protect them from subsequent zoospore inoculation. Branchlet inoculum was prepared by growing P. ramorum on V8 juice agar (V8) for 4 days at 22°C. Zoospores were prepared for leaf inoculation by taking 6 mm agar plugs from the margin of 6-day old cultures and flooding plugs in soil water for four days. Zoospores were released by transferring plugs to sterile distilled water at 4°C for 1.5 h. Leaves on the same three trees that were inoculated with the plugs were sprayed with 350 mL of zoospores (2 × 105 zoospores/mL), and placed in a dew chamber at 23°C for 48 h. Afterwards, they were transferred to a growth chamber (23°C, 12-h diurnal cycle) where the plastic was removed from the lower branches after leaves had dried. A single control tree was treated similarly with uncolonized V8 plugs, followed by a water spray. Leaf spots were visible 4 days later, with inoculated leaves turning necrotic and abscising after 3 weeks. Cankers from inoculated branchlets measured from 12 to 60 mm long after 60 days. Phytophthora ramorum was isolated from the margin of every inoculated canker and leaf spot. No P. ramorum was isolated from the control tree. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. ramorum on L. confertus, in the world. Natural inoculum presumably came from infected Umbellularia californica trees located less than 800 m west of the trees in Sausalito. This detection will further limit the planting choices of arborists and landscapers in P. ramorum infected locations.

Abstract

Tests in rainy conditions are mostly used to determine the behavior of the dielectric elements against moisture. This project presents the development and construction of a sprinkler type rain chamber, which was designed according to the needs and dimensions of the high voltage laboratory of the “Universidad Politecnica Salesiana Sede Cuenca”. The guidelines established by the IEEE Std. 4-2013 are followed for both flow rates, pressures and water treatment to achieve the resistivity value of the normalized liquid for the different tests. The camera is built with fiberglass and tempered glass, with the respective hydraulic circuits to produce the precipitation. The project is complemented with a table of simulator prices and a behavior test of a pin type insulator in dry and wet conditions.

Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Prolonged seizure can evolve into status epilepticus, which can lead to injury or death. We propose a seizure prediction algorithm using a hyper-graph approach to phase-space analysis. Objective indications of seizure onset are derived via time delay embedding of minimally invasive time-serial scalp EEG. The approach considers the brain as a complex nonlinear dynamical system whose states can be characterized to determine change in brain dynamics related to epileptic seizure activity. Our method extracts phase-space graphs via nonlinear time series analysis and time delay embedding and partitions the phase-space graphs to form hypergraphs. The features of the hypergraphs are evaluated using spectral analysis to form biomarkers for seizure prediction. The algorithm correlates historical degrees of change in hypergraph spectra from repeated measurements and makes accurate pre-dictions of seizure onset. Our method yields statistically significant results on scalp EEG data, with a training accuracy of 93% and testing accuracy of 80%.

Abstract

Nowadays, the mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) are developed with important improvements in processing and memory capacity as well as camera resolution, massive storage or wireless connectivity. On those grounds, in developing countries these devices constitute an important alternative to develop assistive technologies to provide support in several areas as education, health care, and the elderly. Given that, in this paper we propose a new approach to handle the gesture recognition in robotic assistants that use a mobile device as main processor. Our approach uses a robust descriptor based on polygonal approximation, convex hull techniques and HU moments, and has achieved 93% precision in real scenarios with different light conditions.

Abstract

Objective. Review presurgical use of ictal HFO mapping to detect ictal activation areas with dual seizure focus in both the temporal and extratemporal cortex.Methods. Review of consecutive patients admitted to the University of South Alabama Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (SouthCEP) between January 2014 and October 2015, with suspected temporal lobe epilepsy and intracranial electrode recording. Ictal HFO localization was displayed in 3D reconstructed brain images using the patient’s own coregistered magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) with the implanted electrodes.Results. Four of fifteen patients showed evidence of extratemporal involvement at the onset of the clinical seizures. Ictal HFO mapping involving both frontal and temporal lobe changed the surgical resection areas in three patients where the initial surgical plan included only the temporal lobe. Resection of the ictal HFO at the onset of the seizure and the initial propagation region was associated with seizure freedom in all patients; follow-up period ranged from 12 to 25 months.Significance. Extratemporal ictal involvement may not have clinical manifestations and may account for surgical failure in temporal lobe epilepsy. Ictal HFO mapping is useful to define the ictal cortical network and may help detect an extratemporal focus.
