Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic inflammatory and fibrotic response-driven lung disease that is difficult to cure because it manifests excessive profibrotic cytokines (e.g., TGF-β), activated myofibroblasts, and accumulated extracellular matrix (ECM). In an attempt to develop an inhalation formulation with enhanced antifibrotic efficacy, we sought to fabricate unique aerosolizable inhaled microgels (μGel) that contain nintedanib-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs; n-PN) and pirfenidone-liposomes (p-LP). The aero-μGel was ∼12 μm, resisted phagocytosis by alveolar macrophages in vitro and in vivo, and protected inner-entrapped n-PN and p-LP. The n-PN/p-LP@aero-μGel caused enhanced/extended antifibrotic efficacy in a bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis mouse presumably due to prolonged lung residence. Consequently, the results obtained by intratracheal aerosol insufflation of our n-PN/p-LP@aero-μGel twice a week were much better than those by as many as seven doses of single or mixed applications of n-PN or p-LP. The antifibrotic/pharmacokinetic results for the n-PN/p-LP@aero-μGel included reduced fibrosis progression, restored lung physiological functions, deactivated myofibroblasts, inhibited TGF-β progression, and suppressed ECM component production (collagen I and α-SMA) along with prolonged lung retention time. We believe that our n-PN/p-LP@aero-μGel increased the local availability of both nintedanib and pirfenidone due to evasion of alveolar macrophage phagocytosis and prolonged lung retention with reduced systemic distribution. Through this approach, our inhalation formulation subsequently attenuated fibrosis progression and improved lung function. Importantly, these results hold profound implications in the therapeutic potential of our n-PN/p-LP@aero-μGel to serve as a clinically promising platform, providing significant advancements for improved treatment of many respiratory diseases including IFP.

Abstract In this paper, we successfully fabricated color conversion layers (CCLs) for full-color-mico-LED display using a perovskite quantum dot (PQD)/siloxane composite by ligand exchanged PQD with silane composite followed by surface activation by an addition of halide-anion containing salt. Due to this surface activation, it was possible to construct the PQD surface with a silane ligand using a non-polar organic solvent that does not damage the PQD. As a result, the ligand-exchanged PQD with a silane compound exhibited high dispersibility in the siloxane matrix and excellent atmospheric stability due to sol–gel condensation. Based on highly ambient stable PQD/siloxane composite based CCLs, full-color micro-LED display has a 1 mm pixel pitch, about 25.4 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution was achieved. In addition, due to the thin thickness of the black matrix to prevent blue light interference, the possibility of a flexible display that can be operated without damage even with a bending radius of 5 mm was demonstrated.

The importance of active sonar is increasing due to the quieting of submarines and the increase in maritime traffic. However, the multipath propagation of sound waves and the low signal-to-noise ratio due to multiple clutter make it difficult to detect, track, and identify underwater targets using active sonar. To solve this problem, machine learning and deep learning techniques that have recently been in the spotlight are being applied, but these techniques require a large amount of data. In order to supplement insufficient active sonar data, methods based on mathematical modeling are primarily utilized. However, mathematical modeling-based methods have limitations in accurately simulating complicated underwater phenomena. Therefore, an artificial intelligence-based sonar signal synthesis technique is proposed in this paper. The proposed method modified the major modules of the Tacotron model, which is widely used in the field of speech synthesis, in order to apply the Tacotron model to the field of sonar signal synthesis. To prove the validity of the proposed method, spectrograms of synthesized sonar signals are analyzed and the mean opinion score was measured. Through the evaluation, we confirmed that the proposed method can synthesize active sonar data similar to the trained one.

The mechanical scanning of a single element transducer has been mostly utilized for high-frequency ultrasound imaging. However, it requires space for the mechanical motion of the transducer. In this paper, a rotational scanning ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) system equipped with a high-frequency angled needle transducer is designed and implemented in order to minimize the space required. It was applied to ex vivo ultrasound imaging of porcine posterior ocular tissues through a minimal incision hole of 1 mm in diameter. The retina and sclera for the one eye were visualized in the relative rotating angle range of 270° ~ 330° and at a distance range of 6 ~ 7 mm, whereas the tissues of the other eye were observed in relative angle range of 160° ~ 220° and at a distance range of 7.5 ~ 9 mm. The layer between retina and sclera seemed to be bent because the distance between the transducer tip and the layer was varied while the transducer was rotated. Certin features of the rotation system such as the optimal scanning angle, step angle and data length need to be improved for ensure higher accuracy and precision. Moreover, the focal length should be considered for the image quality. This implementation represents the first report of a rotational scanning UBM system.

Despite considerable research efforts on the relationship between arterial geometry and cardiovascular pathology, information is lacking on the pulsatile geometrical variation caused by arterial distensibility and cardiomotility because of the lack of suitable in vivo experimental models and the methodological difficulties in examining the arterial dynamics. We aimed to investigate the feasibility of using a chick embryo system as an experimental model for basic research on the pulsatile variation of arterial geometry. Optical microscope video images of various arterial shapes in chick chorioallantoic circulation were recorded from different locations and different embryo samples. The high optical transparency of the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) allowed clear observation of tiny vessels and their movements. Systolic and diastolic changes in arterial geometry were visualized by detecting the wall boundaries from binary images. Several to hundreds of microns of wall displacement variations were recognized during a pulsatile cycle. The spatial maps of the wall motion harmonics and magnitude ratio of harmonic components were obtained by analyzing the temporal brightness variation at each pixel in sequential grayscale images using spectral analysis techniques. The local variations in the spectral characteristics of the arterial wall motion were reflected well in the analysis results. In addition, mapping the phase angle of the fundamental frequency identified the regional variations in the wall motion directivity and phase shift. Regional variations in wall motion phase angle and fundamental-to-second harmonic ratio were remarkable near the bifurcation area. In summary, wall motion in various arterial geometry including straight, curved and bifurcated shapes was well observed in the CAM artery model, and their local and cyclic variations could be characterized by Fourier and wavelet transforms of the acquired video images. The CAM artery model with the spectral analysis method is a useful in vivo experimental model for studying pulsatile variation in arterial geometry.

Recently, several user authentication schemes for wireless sensor networks based on two-factor concept using the smart card technology were proposed. However, they have serious limitations in terms of security and usability. First, even though they are enhancements of other works, they still have several security flaws, such as vulnerability against parallel session, privileged-insider, and gateway-node bypassing attacks and lack of mutual authentication between user station and gateway node. On the other hand, they also present a usability constraint, in a sense that they do not consider the use case when sensor nodes cannot communicate with gateway node. In this case, data collected by isolated sensor nodes could not be accessed until they recover such communication, which is in many times not recoverable rapidly or forever (e.g., military applications, natural disaster monitoring). Due to all these reasons, this paper proposes a robust user authentication scheme which fixes the security weaknesses of previous solutions and provides wider usability considering the use case when the sensor nodes cannot communicate with the gateway node. Once the solution is described, its security is ensured by formal proof and analysis against attacks. Additionally, performance and cost analysis are executed to determine its level of feasibility for real implementation.

The uses of wireless sensor networks have increased to be applicable in many different areas, such as military applications, ecology, and health applications. These applications often include the management of confidential information, making the issue of security one of the most important aspects to consider. In this aspect, a user authentication mechanism that allows only legitimate users to access the network data becomes critical for maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of the network information. In this paper, we describe and cryptoanalyze previous works in user authentication to illustrate their vulnerabilities and security flaws. We then propose a robust user authentication scheme that solves the identified limitations. Additionally, we describe how the proposed protocol is more suitable for a secure sensor network implementation by analysis in terms of security and performance.
