Relative Apparent Synapomorphy Analysis (RASA) was recently proposed as a way to measure phylogenetic signal, choose "optimal" outgroups, find long branches, and eliminate long-branch attraction. In this paper it is shown with simple examples that RASA has several problems. The null regression model used by RASA to measure phylogenetic signal does not have a straightforward relation to phylogenetic information. RASA detects long branches, but does not discriminate between long branches that mislead an analysis and those that do not. Rooted RASA, which is used for "optimal outgroup analysis," is shown to be an inappropriate measure of "+esiomorphy content".

We describe a new species of the Scinax catharinae group from coastal forest in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. We also describe the karyotype and the advertisement call of the new species, which is composed by a multipulsed note. The chromosome morphology of the new species shows the nucleolar organizer region (NOR) on Pair 6, a putative synapomorphy previously inferred for the S. catharinae clade. We report, for the first time, the presence of mental glands in a species of the genus Scinax. Additionally, we provide a brief discussion about the occurrence of glandular tissue on the mental and inguinal regions of the species of the S. catharinae clade.

We describe the tadpole of Sphaenorhynchus caramaschii. It differs from tadpoles of other species of Sphaenorhynchus in having a short spiracle, submarginal papillae, and alternating short and large marginal papillae in the oral disc. Some larval characteristics, like morphology and position of the nostrils, length of the spiracle, and size of the marginal papillae on the oral disc are discussed for tadpoles of other species of Sphaenorhynchus.

We describe the tadpoles of Hypsiboas melanopleura and H. aguilari and compare them with the tadpoles of other species in the Hypsiboas pulchellus group. The description of the tadpole of H. aguilari is based on an individual at Gosner Stage 29 and that of H. melanopleura on an individual at Gosner Stage 28. Both tadpoles have a labial tooth row formula of 2(2)/4(1). At Stage 35, the tadpole of H. aguilari had a total length of 52.2 mm, at Stage 37, the tadpole of H. melanopleura had a total length of 60.7 mm. In life, the tadpole of H. aguilari has a brownish olive body with dark brown spots; fins transparent with dark brown reticulations, anterior half of tail muscle brown laterally, its posterior half pale brown with dark brown reticulations, and iris gold with black reticulations. In life, the tadpole of H. melanopleura has a pale beige ground coloration with brown flecks; tail laterally and ventrally whitish with grey flecks, and a beige iris. The tadpole morphology in Hypsiboas aguilari, H. melanopleura, and H. palaestes is similar, but tadpoles differ by their species-specific coloration patterns. Fil: Lehr, Edgard. Anuran amphibians are known to employ acoustic signals as the principal form to access potential mates, while recent studies have highlighted the importance of multiple cues during courtship. Hypsiboas punctatus is a hylid species in which males emit advertisement calls and have sexually dimorphic skin glands (SDSGs). However, knowledge on the reproductive biology of this species is very limited. We present the first systematic field-observational study on the behaviour of H. punctatus, which was complemented by observations under laboratory-controlled conditions. Males exhibit a territorial behaviour as is evidenced by site fidelity, aggressiveness against male intruders (usually involving fights), and signalling behaviour. We found that female choice would be operating at two different levels, which we defined as Initial Exploration (I.E.) and Proximate Exploration (P.E.). These levels would be guided by acoustic signals in I.E., while tactile and/or chemical signals (considering the presence of SDSGs) would be more important in P.E. We also provide descriptions of vocal interaction between males, amplexus, and egg clutch. We suggest that SDSGs located at the mental gland may be important in delivering sexual pheromones to the female during amplexus. Finally, our results are compared to similar behaviours that have been described for related species, and discussed in terms of the probable existence of multimodal communication. A major recent trend in systematics is the re-integration of morphological data into total evidence analysis. To date, few studies have explored the effects of incorporating morphological and molecular data into total evidence analyses; however, those that have done so have found that even a comparatively small phenomic dataset can have disproportionately large impacts on results. Given the demonstrated importance of morphological characters in testing the phylogenetic relationships, herein I provide a case in point for the exploration of the effects of incorporating morphological evidence as an independent source of phylogenetic evidence, and an important framework to test hypotheses supported by molecular evidence, in the superfamily Brachycephaloidea. In this study, 338 amphibian species are included, of which 318 species correspond to the superfamily Brachycephaloidea. All known genera within the superfamily were sampled. The complete dataset included 13,686 molecular characters (mitochondrial and nuclear markers) and 185 morphological characters, which were analyzed together. In addition, I performed additional analyses modifying the complete datasets to evaluate the effects of character and taxon sampling. As results, I found that the superfamily Brachycephaloidea does not represent a monophyletic as previously thought. Likewise, the phylogeny resulting from this analysis showed several taxa to be nonmonophyletic: Brachycephalidae and Craugastoridae as well as genera Craugastor, Psychrophynella, and Pristimantis. From the detailed examination of the impact of both character and taxon sampling on the phylogenetic relationships of the superfamily Brachycephaloidea, I found that the inclusion of a comparatively small phenomic dataset (185 character) as well as the inclusion of two key taxa (Atopophrynus syntomopus and Dischidodactylus duidensis) had disproportionately large impacts on the tree topology. Finally, I provide a new taxonomy for this group. In this, I recognize five families, of which three are morphologically diagnosable (Eleutherodactylidae, Hypodactylidae, and Strabomantidae) whereas the other two are diagnosable solely with molecular evidence (Ceuthomantidae and Craugastoridae). Likewise, 12 out of 26 genera included are morphologically diagnosable. Uma grande tendência em estudos de sistemática filogenética é a reintegração de dados morfológicos em análises de evidência total. Até o momento, poucos estudos exploraram os efeitos da incorporação de dados morfológicos conjuntamente com dados moleculares em análises de evidência total. No entanto, aqueles que o fizeram concluíram que mesmo uma pequena base de dados fenômicos pode ter grandes e desproporcionais impactos nos resultados. Dada a demonstrada importância de caracteres morfológicos em testes de relacionamentos filogenéticos, aqui apresento um caso de exploração dos efeitos da incorporação de evidência morfológica como uma fonte independente de evidência filogenética e como importante \"framework\" para testar hipóteses suportadas por evidência molecular na superfamília Brachycephaloidea. Nesse estudo, 338 espécies de anfíbios foram incluídas, das quais 318 correspondem a espécies da superfamília Brachycephaloidea. Todos os gêneros conhecidos da superfamília foram amostrados. A base de dados completa inclui 13.686 caracteres moleculares (marcadores mitocondriais e nucleares) e 185 caracteres morfológicos, que foram analisados conjuntamente. Ademais, realizei análises adicionais modificando as bases de dados para avaliar os efeitos de amostragem de caracteres e táxons. Como resultado, encontrei que a superfamília Brachycephaloidea não é monofilética, como anteriormente considerada. Da mesma forma, a filogenia resultante da análise de evidência total mostrou que vários outros táxons também não são monofiléticos: as famílias Brachycephalidae e Craugastoridae, assim como os gêneros Craugastor, Psychrophrynella e Pristimantis. Através do exame detalhado do impacto de diferentes amostragens de caracteres e táxons sobre as relações filogenética na superfamília Brachycephaloidea, encontrei que a inclusão de dois táxons chaves (Atopophrynus syntomopus e Dischidodactylus duidensis) tiveram grandes e desproporcionais impactos na topologia das árvores. Finalmente, eu apresento uma nova taxonomia para as rãs de desenvolvimento direto, reconhecendo cinco famílias, das quais três são morfologicamente diagnosticáveis (Eleutherodactylidae, Hypodactylidae e Strabomantidae), enquanto as outras duas são diagnosticáveis apenas com evidência molecular (Ceuthomantidae e Craugastoridae). Da mesma forma, 12 dos 26 gêneros inclusos são morfologicamente diagnosticáveis.

Tadpoles represent a key element in evolutionary history and the diversification of anurans. Through a two-phase life cycle, anurans can take advantage of the available resources in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Several studies have demonstrated that larval morphology may represent an important source of evidence for evolutionary studies. However, tadpoles are often ignored and little is known about their anatomy and biology. An example of this problem is the superfamily Dendrobatoidea, for which there is almost no information on tadpoles. This study aims to fill this gap. I performed a cladistic analysis of the superfamily Dendrobatoidae with emphasis on larval characters. The final dataset also included adult phenotypic characters and DNA sequences. The final matrix was composed of 621 terminals and more than 500 phenotypic characters of which 392 were individualized from larval systems, such as chondrocranium, cranial musculature and buccopharungeal anatomy. In my optimum hypothesis I recovered Dendrobatoidea as well as all its subfamilies and genera as monophyletic. Larval characters optimized as synapomorphies at different levels. Based on the topology and distribution of the characters, I discuss the evolution of several lifestyles and morphologies, such as oophagy, endotrophy, and carnivory in Dendrobatoidea Girinos representam um elemento chave na história evolutiva e na diversificação dos anuros. Através de um ciclo de vida bifásico, os anuros conseguem aproveitar os recursos disponíveis tanto no ambiente terrestre como no aquático. Vários estudos demonstraram que a morfologia larvar pode representar uma importante fonte de evidências para estudos evolutivos. No entanto, girinos frequentemente são ignorados e pouco se sabe sobre sua anatomia e biologia. Um exemplo dessa problemática é a superfamília Dendrobatoidea, para a qual quase não há informações sobre seus girinos. O presente estudo visa contribuir para o preenchimento dessa lacuna. Eu realizei uma análise cladística da superfamília Dendrobatoidae, tendo como foco caracteres larvais. O dataset final também incluiu caracteres de adulto e sequências de DNA. A matriz final foi composta por 621 terminais e mais de 500 caracteres fenotípicos, dos quais 392 foram individualizados de sistemas larvais como condrocrânio, musculatura craniana e cavidade buccopharingeal. Em minha hipótese ótima, eu recuperei Dendrobatoidea bem como todas suas subfamílias e gêneros monofiléticos. Caracteres larvais otimizaram como sinapomorfias em diferentes níveis. Mediante a topologia e a distribuição dos caracteres, eu discuto a evolução de uma série de modos de vida e morfologias, como a oofagia, o endotrofismo e a carnivoria em Dendrobatoidea

O gênero Hypsiboas foi retirado da sinonímia de Hyla, com base em estudos moleculares, para agrupar parte das espécies de hilídeos neotropicais portadores do osso pré-pólex desenvolvido em espinho. Atualmente o gênero compreende 84 espécies descritas, distribuídas em sete grupos com afinidades morfológicas ou moleculares. Entretanto, sinapomorfias morfológicas para o gênero e para os grupos são desconhecidas. Visando compreender as relações filogenéticas entre grupos e espécies do gênero, bem como testar a monofilia e relacionamento dos grupos de H. albopunctatus e H. semilineatus, uma matriz filogenética de 53 táxons terminais e 116 caracteres morfológicos foi construída. Foram encontradas três árvores mais parcimoniosas de 887 passos, sendo a única diferença entre elas restrita à parte do grupo de H. pulchellus. Apesar do baixo suporte dos clados, os grupos de H. albopunctatus (excetuando H. heilprini), H. punctatus e H. pulchellus permanecem monofiléticos. O grupo de H. faber permanece relacionado ao grupo de H. pulchellus, porém parafilético em relação ao mesmo. H. boans e H. wavrini aparecem relacionadas ao grupo de H. faber, e o restante do grupo de H. semilineatus permanece como um clado, irmão do grupo de H. albopunctatus. O grupo de H. albopunctatus é sustentado por quatro sinapomorfias não exclusivas: lábio posterior dos girinos com três fileiras de dentículos; parede interna do espiráculo do girino com 2/3 da extremidade distal livre; faixa loreal presente em indivíduos adultos; e placa hióide mineralizada medialmente em indivíduos adultos. O grupo de H. semilineatus é sustentado por cinco sinapomorfias não exclusivas: asperidades nupciais presentes nos dedos dos machos; faixa branca na margem do lábio inferior presente nos indivíduos adultos; pálpebra com padrão reticulado; ausência de contato entre m. submentalis e m. intermandibularis; e processo lateral da vértebra VIII orientado ortogonalmente ao eixo do corpo. The Hypsiboas genus was removed from the synonymy of Hyla based on molecular studies, to group part of neotropical hylid species that possess the prepollex developed into a spine. Nowadays, it contains 84 described species, distributed into seven groups based on morphological or molecular affinities. However, morphological synapomorphies for the genus and its groups are unknown. In order to enhance the knowledge of phylogenetic relationships between groups and species of the genus, and test the monophyly and relationships of H. albopunctatus and H. semilineatus groups, a phylogenetic matrix of 53 terminals and 116 morphological characters was elaborated. Three more parsimonious trees with 887 steps were found. The only differences are restricted to part of H. pulchellus group. Despite the low support of the clades, the H. albopunctatus (excepting H. heilprini), H. punctatus, and H. pulchellus groups remain monophyletic. The H. faber group remain related to H. pulchellus group, but it is paraphyletic. H. boans and H. wavrini are related to H. faber group, and the other species of H. semilineatus group form a clade sister to H. albopunctatus group. The H. albopunctatus group has four non-exclusive synapomorphies: posterior lips of tadpoles with three rows of keratodonts; inner wall of spiracle of tadpole with 2/3 of distal end free; loreal strip present on adults; and hyoid plate medially mineralized in adults. The H. semilineatus group has five non-exclusive synapomorphies: nuptial excrescences present on males; white stripe on lower lip present on adults; reticulated palpebral membrane; absence of contact between m. submentalis and m. intermandibularis; and lateral process of VIII vertebra oriented orthogonally to the body axis.
