Thermomagnesium (TM), a byproduct of Ni ore mining, can be processed as a clean alternative to conventional fertilizers as a source of magnesium (Mg) and silicon (Si) for agriculture. TM positively impacts soil properties and provides nutrients that are available for uptake by plants; however, information on the effects of TM on plant physiology in cropping systems is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of increasing doses of TM on crop yield; soil chemical attributes; and leaf contents of Mg, Si, reducing sugars, sucrose, and starch in a soybean-maize crop rotation system. The study was performed under rainfed conditions during three consecutive crop seasons in 2018/2019 (soybean), 2019 (maize), and 2019/2020 (soybean). Six TM doses (0, 350, 700, 1050, 1400, 1750 kg ha−1) with four replicates were applied prior to the first season. Responses to the application of TM were observed up to the highest doses (1,400 and 1750 kg ha−1), with increases in soil concentrations of Mg and Si, soil pH, leaf pigments, gas exchange parameters, and carbohydrate concentrations but decreases in starch content. The increases in photosynthetic rates and carbohydrate partitioning led to increases in the weight of 100 grains (W100G) and grain yield (GY). W100G increased by 11% in soybean at a TM dose of 1,050 kg ha−1 and 23% in maize at a TM dose of 1,400 kg ha−1 dose. For both crops, the greatest increases in GY were obtained at a TM dose of 1,050 kg ha−1, with increases of 1,068 and 3,658 kg ha−1 for soybean and maize, respectively, compared with the control. Therefore, TM can be used in agricultural systems as a viable source of Mg and Si and as soil acidity amendment to promote sustainable agriculture.

Interest in fall–winter species options for rotation with soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) has arisen; however, little is known about how they can affect the performance of subsequent soybean under a no-tillage system in tropical environments. Our objective was to evaluate the leaf nutrient concentration, aboveground dry matter (DM) accumulation, macronutrient uptake, yield components, and seed yield of soybean cropped in succession to different crop species. Consequently, a field experiment was conducted during three consecutive growing seasons in Botucatu, São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The treatments consisted of the cultivation of five crops (crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst. ex. R.E. Fries), maize (Zea mays L.), safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)) in rotation with soybean, in addition to plots that lie fallow (spontaneous weeds) in the soybean off-season, totaling six treatments. Letting plots lie fallow during the off-season reduced the DM accumulation, nutrient uptake, and seed yield of the soybean crop in succession. Preceding cultivation of fall–winter crambe or sunflower favored the uptake of P, K, Ca, Mg, and S by the following soybean crop. The cultivation of sorghum, safflower, and crambe as fall–winter crops also increased the seed yield of subsequent soybean (from 12 to 18% on the average of three growing seasons) compared to fallow plots. The highest increases in soybean seed yield were found in succession to maize (37%) or sunflower (45%) in the second and third growing seasons, respectively.

Intercropping grain with forage crops bridges the gap between agriculture and sustainability. In tropical regions, forage grasses are increasingly being adopted as winter pasture intercropped and in rotation with maize to maximize food production. However, current recommendations for nitrogen (N) fertilizer application are based on monocropped maize (Zea mays), and the best N management approach for intercropping systems remains unclear. A field experiment was carried out in three growing seasons with three intercropping systems [monoculture maize, intercropped with palisadegrass (Urochloa brizantha), and intercropped with guineagrass (Megathyrus maximus)] combined with six different split applications of N to maize (0–0, 100–0, 70–30, 50–50, 30–70, and 0–100 kg N ha−1 at seeding-sidedressing) with four replicates. We measured dry matter (DM) and accumulated N in maize and forage grasses, as well as maize production components and yields. Additionally, land equivalent ratio, relative crowding coefficient, aggressivity of maize with forage grasses, forage crude protein (CP) concentration, estimated animal stocking rate, and estimated meat production and economic outcomes. Greatest maize yield was 8.7 Mg ha−1 for monocropped maize. However, favorable maize yield was also obtained in intercropping systems. Although no difference was observed between intercropping systems, applying all N at sidedressing of maize negatively affected maize and forage yields and, consequently, land use and economic evaluation. For both intercropping systems, estimated meat and land use were 114 and 10% higher when N fertilizer was applied than the control (0–0 kg N ha−1), on average. Maize-forage grass intercropping is a viable alternative production system for improving yields and land use. In addition, estimated meat production and revenue can be enhanced with palisadegrass or guineagrass. At least half of the N fertilizer must be applied early in the growing season of maize to maximize production of the entire system.

Abstract In weathered tropical soil, low nutrient use efficiency can lead to agricultural systems becoming unsustainable. Therefore, tropical agriculture is highly dependent on ecosystem services, such as nutrient recycling and carbon sequestration, to enhance soil fertility, increase nutrient uptake, and facilitate sustainable production of agricultural goods. This research aimed to find the balance between sustainability and profitability of tropical agriculture by evaluating the changes in soil caused by the ecosystem services provided by the biomass of leguminous trees (Gliricidia) and assessing how these changes (associated with potassium) can affect nitrogen‐use efficiency and maize yield. An experiment was conducted testing the impact of Glircidia biomass addition vs. bare soil, with or without addition of both nitrogen and/or potassium. Changes in soil organic matter, (SOM) base cations sum, soil resistance, N uptake, N‐use efficiency, and maize yield were evaluated. Gliricidia biomass, when used with N and K, contributed to increasing SOM by 5.0 g/kg and the sum of base cations by 1458. 65 kg/ha in the 0–30 cm layer. Moreover, grain yield was increased by approximately 70% in the treatments with Gliricidia when compared to treatments without biomass where yield was very low. In bare soil, the additional yield of 1.5 tons/ha would not be enough to convince farmers to change slash and burn to conventional bare soil systems. Our results showed that leguminous trees, such as Gliricidia, might contribute to ensuring sustainable agricultural intensification in humid tropical soils with low natural fertility by providing ecosystem services such as biomass production, carbon sequestration, base cation recycling, and increased N acquisition. These findings might be an important strategy to replace the common slash‐and‐burn‐system and preserve the rainforest against the traditional shifting cultivation system. In contrast, the conventional system with bare soil showed that the addition of nitrogen was unfeasible, mainly in conditions of high rainfall precipitation. In these circumstances, the use of potassium may increase nitrogen‐use efficiency only when biomass is not used.

Tropical regions have been considered the world's primary agricultural frontier; however, some physico-chemical deficiencies, such as low soil organic matter content, poor soil structure, high erodibility, soil acidity, and aluminum toxicity, have affected their productive capacity. Lime and gypsum are commonly used to improve soil chemical fertility, but no information exists about the long-term effects of these products on the physical attributes and C protection mechanisms of highly weathered Oxisols. A field trial was conducted in a sandy clay loam (kaolinitic, thermic Typic Haplorthox) under a no-tillage system for 12 years. The trial consisted of four treatments: a control with no soil amendment application, the application of 2.1 Mg ha-1 phosphogypsum, the application of 2.0 Mg ha-1 lime, and the application of lime + phosphogypsum (2.0 + 2.1 Mg ha-1, respectively). Since the experiment was established in 2002, the rates have been applied three times (2002, 2004, and 2010). Surface liming effectively increased water-stable aggregates > 2.0 mm at a depth of up to 0.2 m; however, the association with phosphogypsum was considered a good strategy to improve the macroaggregate stability in subsoil layers (0.20 to 0.40 m). Consequently, both soil amendments applied together increased the mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) in all soil layers, with increases of up to 118 and 89%, respectively, according to the soil layer. The formation and stabilization of larger aggregates contributed to a higher accumulation of total organic carbon (TOC) on these structures. In addition to TOC, the MWD and aggregate stability index were positively correlated with Ca2+ and Mg2+ levels and base saturation. Consequently, the increase observed in the aggregate size class resulted in a better organization of soil particles, increasing the macroporosity and reducing the soil bulk density and penetration resistance. Therefore, adequate soil chemical management plays a fundamental role in improving the soil's physical attributes in tropical areas under conservative management and highly affected by compaction caused by intensive farming.
