Search

Disintegrating multiple systems have been previously discovered from kinematic studies of the $\it Hipparcos$ catalogue. They are presumably the result of dynamical encounters taking place in the Galactic disk between single/multiple systems. In this paper, we aim to expand the search for such systems, to study their properties, as well as to characterize possible low-mass ejecta (i.e. brown dwarfs and planets). We have assembled a list of 15 candidate systems using astrometry from the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (later upgraded with $\it Gaia$ DR3), and here we present the discovery and follow-up of 5 of them. We have obtained DECam imaging for all 5 systems and by combining near-infrared photometry and proper motion, we searched for ultra-cool ejected components. We find that the system consisting of TYC 7731-1951-1, TYC 7731-2128 AB, and TYC 7731-1995-1ABC?, contains one very promising ultra-cool dwarf candidate. Using additional data from the literature, we have found that 3 out of 5 disintegrating system candidates are likely to be true disintegrating systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

Using RR Lyrae stars in the Gaia Data Release 2 and Pan-STARRS1 we study the properties of the Pisces Overdensity, a diffuse sub-structure in the outer halo of the Milky Way. We show that along the line of sight, Pisces appears as a broad and long plume of stars stretching from 40 to 110 kpc with a steep distance gradient. On the sky Pisces's elongated shape is aligned with the Magellanic Stream. Using follow-up VLT FORS2 spectroscopy, we have measured the velocity distribution of the Pisces candidate member stars and have shown it to be as broad as that of the Galactic halo but offset to negative velocities. Using a suite of numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the structure has many properties in common with the predicted behaviour of the Magellanic wake, i.e. the Galactic halo overdensity induced by the in-fall of the Magellanic Clouds., Submitted to MNRAS Letters. Globular clusters (GCs) associated with the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) have evolved under the gravitational potential of both Sgr dSph and the Milky Way. The effects of these potentials are most pronounced in the extra-tidal regions as compared to the central regions of the GCs.We aim to study the extra-tidal regions of the GCs that are possibly associated with Sgr dSph, namely Arp 2, Terzan 8, NGC 5634, NGC 6284, Terzan 7, NGC 2419, NGC 4147, M 54 and Pal 12, using data from the {\it Gaia} early data release 3. We selected the extra-tidal candidates based on their angular distances from the cluster centre in the RA-Dec plane, proper motions of the clusters and the individual extra-tidal star candidates, and their positions on the colour-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. We found extra-tidal candidates for the nine studied GCs. For eight of them, the surface density of candidate extra-tidal stars in the vicinity of the clusters is in significant excess with respect to more distant surrounding fields. No extended extra-tidal features beyond 5 tidal radii were detected for any of the clusters. We publish a list of the most probable extra-tidal candidates that we determined using Gaia astrometric and photometric data. Our analysis shows that the clusters that are associated with Sgr dSph are more likely affected by the gravitational potential of the Sgr, as the distribution of extra-tidal stars is elongated in the same direction as the local stream. NGC 4147 is the only exception. We found some high-probability candidate extra-tidal stars in several of the analysed clusters. Context. In recent years, a new generation of large-scale imaging surveys have probed wide field regions for the first time around some nearby galaxies in an unprecedentedly low surface-brightness regime (∼28.0-29.0 mag arcsec-2). This provides the chance to discover very faint dwarf satellites by means of systematic visual inspection of these public deep images. Aims. In this paper, we report the first results of a systematic survey of faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the vicinity of the bright late-type spiral galaxy NGC 253 by means of a visual inspection of the images taken by the Dark Energy Survey. Methods. We performed a new NGC 253 satellite search using co-added image cutouts reprocessed in the DESI Legacy image surveys. We used GALFIT software to investigate the photometric and structural properties of three dwarf galaxies. Results. We report the discovery of three new dwarf galaxies in the vicinity of the brightest member of the Sculptor filament, the late-type spiral NGC 253, located at a distance of 3.7 Mpc towards Anti-Virgo. We name them Do II, Do III, and Do IV. Assuming they are companions of NGC 253, their total absolute V-magnitudes fall in the -7 to -9 mag range, which is typical for dwarf satellites in the local Universe. The central surface brightness tends to be extremely low for all three discovered dwarfs and falls roughly in the range of 25-26 mag arcsec-2 in g-band. Using known data on distances and velocities of galaxies, we estimate the total virial mass of the NGC 253 group to be 8 × 1011 M⊙ , which gives a virial radius of R200 = 186 kpc and a turn-around radius of 706 kpc. We also discuss the possible existence of a spatially flattened and velocity-correlated satellite system around NGC 253. This large-scale structure is orientated almost edge-on to the line of sight. The possible plane of satellites is only 31 kpc thick with a minor-to-major axis ratio of 0.14. Four out of five galaxies with measured velocities follow a common velocity trend similar to those observed in the planes of satellites around the Andromeda and Centaurus A galaxies. The ionization rates for the considered period were acquired from the AIMOS (Atmospheric Ionization Module Osnabrück) dataset. For numerical experiments, we applied only the proton-induced ionization rates of that period, while all the other model input parameters, including the electron precipitations, corresponded to the quiet conditions. In January 2005, two major solar proton events with different energy spectra and proton fluxes occurred on January 17 and January 20. Since two geomagnetic storms and several sub-storms took place during the considered period, not only solar protons but also less energetic magnetospheric protons contributed to the calculated ionization rates. Despite the relative transparency of the thermosphere for high-energy protons, an ionospheric response to the SPE and proton precipitation from the magnetotail was obtained in numerical experiments. In the ionospheric E layer, the maximum increase in the electron concentration is localized at high latitudes, and at heights of the ionospheric F2 layer, the positive perturbations were formed in the near-equatorial region. An analysis of the model-derived results showed that changes in the ionospheric F2 layer were caused by a change in the neutral composition of the thermosphere. We found that in the recovery phase after both solar proton events and the enhancement of magnetospheric proton precipitations associated with geomagnetic disturbances, the TEC and electron density in the F region and in topside ionosphere/plasmasphere increase at low- and mid-latitudes due to an enhancement of atomic oxygen concentration. Our results demonstrate an important role of magnetospheric protons in the formation of negative F-region ionospheric storms. According to our results, the topside ionosphere/plasmasphere and bottom-side ionosphere can react to solar and magnetospheric protons both with the same sign of disturbances or in different way. The same statement is true for TEC and foF2 disturbances. Different disturbances of foF2 and TEC at high and low latitudes can be explained by topside electron temperature disturbances. © 2021. We study the outer regions of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC6981 from publicly available $BV$ photometry and new Dark Energy Camera (DECam) observations, both reaching nearly 4 mag below the cluster main sequence (MS) turnoff. While the $BV$ data sets reveal the present of extra-tidal features around the cluster, the much larger field of view of DECam observations allowed us to identify some other tidal features, which extend from the cluster toward the opposite direction to the Milky Way center. These cluster structural features arise from stellar density maps built using MS stars, once the cluster color-magnitude diagram was cleaned from the contamination of field stars. We also performed $N$-body simulations in order to help us to understand the spatial distribution of the extra-tidal debris. The outcomes reveal the presenceof long trailing and leading tails mostly parallel to the direction of the cluster velocity vector. We found that the cluster has lost most of its mass by tidal disruption during its perigalactic passages, that lasted nearly 20 Myr each. Hence, a decrease in the density of escaping stars near the cluster is expected from our $N$-body simulations, which in turn means that stronger extra-tidal features could be found out by exploring much larger areas around NGC6891., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. Whiting 1 is a faint and young globular cluster in the halo of the Milky Way, and was suggested to have originated in the Sagittarius spherical dwarf galaxy (Sgr dSph). In this paper, we use the deep DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys to explore tentative spatial connection between Whiting 1 and the Sgr dSph. We redetermine the fundamental parameters of Whiting 1 and use the best-fitting isochrone (age $τ$=6.5 Gyr, metalicity Z=0.005 and $\rm d_{\odot}$=26.9 kpc) to construct a theoretical matched filter for the extra-tidal features searching. Without any smooth technique to the matched filter density map, we detect a round-shape feature with possible leading and trailing tails on either side of the cluster. This raw image is not totally new compared to old discoveries, but confirms that no more large-scale features can be detected under a depth of r, 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for the publication of ApJ

Since the discovery of chemically peculiar stars in globular clusters in the last century, the study of multiple populations has become increasingly important, given that chemical inhomogeneity is found in almost all globular clusters. Despite various proposed theories attempting to explain this phenomenon, fitting all the observational evidence in globular clusters with one single theory remains notoriously difficult and currently unsuccessful. In order to improve existing models and motivate new ones, we are observing globular clusters at critical conditions, e.g., metal-rich end, metal-poor end, and low mass end. In this paper, we present our first attempt to investigate multiple populations in low mass globular clusters. We obtained low-resolution spectra around 4000 A of 30 members of the globular cluster Palomar 13 using OSIRIS/Multi-object spectrograph mounted at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. The membership of red giant branch stars is confirmed by the latest proper motions from Gaia DR2 and literature velocities. After comparing the measured CN and CH spectral indices with those of the stellar models, we found a clear sign of nitrogen variation among the red giant branch stars. We report on the search for overall kinematical or structural conditions that have allowed some Milky Way globular clusters to presently develop tidal tails. For this purpose, we build a comprehensive catalogue of globular clusters with studies focused on their outermost regions and classified them in three categories: those with observed tidal tails, those with extra-tidal features different from tidal tails and those without any signature of extended stellar density profiles. When exploring different kinematical and structural parameter spaces, we found that globular clusters - irrespective from the presence of tidal tails, or any other kind of extra-tidal features or the absence of them - behave similarly. In general, globular clusters whose orbits are relatively more eccentric and very inclined respect to the Milky Way plane have undergone a larger amount of mass-loss by tidal disruption. The latter has also accelerated the internal dynamics toward a comparatively more advanced stage of evolution. These outcomes show that it is not straightforward to find any particular set of parameter space and dynamical conditions that can definitely predict tidal tails along globular clusters in the Milky Way., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. [Aims]: We aim to measure the proper motion along the Sagittarius stream, which is the missing piece in determining its full 6D phase space coordinates. [Methods]: We conduct a blind search of over-densities in proper motion from the Gaia second data release in a broad region around the Sagittarius stream by applying wavelet transform techniques. [Results]: We find that for most of the sky patches, the highest intensity peaks delineate the path of the Sagittarius stream. The 1500 peaks identified depict a continuous sequence spanning almost 2π in the sky, only obscured when the stream crosses the Galactic disk. Altogether, around 100 000 stars potentially belong to the stream as indicated by a coarse inspection of the color-magnitude diagrams. From these stars, we determine the proper motion along the Sagittarius stream, making it the proper-motion sequence with the largest span and continuity ever measured for a stream. A first comparison with existing N-body models of the stream reveals some discrepancies, especially near the pericenter of the trailing arm and an underestimation of the total proper motion for the leading arm. [Conclusions]: Our study provides a starting point for determining the variation of the population of stars along the stream, the distance to the stream from the red clump stars, and the solar motion. We present results on the extra-tidal features of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 7099, using deep gr photometry obtained with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam). We reached nearly 6 mag below the cluster Main Sequence (MS) turnoff, so that we dealt with the most suitable candidates to trace any stellar structure located beyond the cluster tidal radius. From star-by-star reddening corrected color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) we defined four adjacent strips along the MS, for which we built the respective stellar density maps, once the contamination by field stars was properly removed. The resulting field star cleaned stellar density maps show a short tidal tail and some scattered debris. Such extra-tidal features are hardly detected when much shallower Gaia DR2 data sets are used and the same CMD field star cleaning procedure is applied. Indeed, by using 2.5 magnitudes below the cluster MS turnoff as the faintest limit (G < 20.5 mag), cluster members turned out to be distributed within the cluster's tidal radius, and some hints for field star density variations are found across a circle of radius 3.5deg centered on the cluster and with similar CMD features as cluster stars. The proper motion distribution of these stars is distinguishable from that of the cluster, with some superposition, which resembles that of stars located beyond 3.5deg from the cluster center., 7 pages, 9 figures. We carried out a spectroscopic follow-up program of the four new stellar stream candidates detected by Belokurov & Koposov (2016) in the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using FORS2 (VLT). The medium-resolution spectra were used to measure the line-of-sight velocities, estimate stellar metallicities and to classify stars into Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) and Blue Straggler (BS) stars. Using the 4-D phase-space information, we attribute approximately one half of our sample to the Magellanic Clouds, while the rest is part of the Galactic foreground. Only two of the four stream candidates are confirmed kinematically. While it is impossible to estimate the exact levels of MW contamination, the phase-space distribution of the entire sample of our Magellanic stars matches the expected velocity gradient for the LMC halo and extends as far as 33 deg (angular separation) or 29 kpc from the LMC center. Our detections reinforce the idea that the halo of the LMC seems to be larger than previously expected, and its debris can be spread in the sky out to very large separations from the LMC center. The Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) located in the inner regions of the Milky Way suffer from high extinction that makes their observation challenging. The VVV survey provides a way to explore these GGCs in the near-infrared where extinction effects are highly diminished. We conduct a search for variable stars in several inner GGCs, taking advantage of the unique multi-epoch, wide-field, near-infrared photometry provided by the VVV survey. We are especially interested in detecting classical pulsators that will help us constrain the physical parameters of these GGCs. In this paper, the second of a series, we focus on NGC6656 (M22), NGC6626 (M28), NGC6569, and NGC6441; these four massive GGCs have known variable sources, but quite different metallicities. We also revisit 2MASS-GC02 and Terzan10, the two GGCs studied in the first paper of this series. We present an improved method and a new parameter that efficiently identify variable candidates in the GGCs. We also use the proper motions of those detected variable candidates and their positions in the sky and in the color-magnitude diagrams to assign membership to the GGCs. We identify and parametrize in the near-infrared numerous variable sources in the studied GGCs, cataloging tens of previously undetected variable stars. We recover many known classical pulsators in these clusters, including the vast majority of their fundamental mode RR Lyrae. We use these pulsators to obtain distances and extinctions toward these objects. Recalibrated period-luminosity-metallicity relations for the RR Lyrae bring the distances to these GGCs to a closer agreement with those reported by Gaia, except for NGC6441. Recovered proper motions for these GGCs also agree with those reported by Gaia, except for 2MASS-GC02, the most reddened GGC in our sample, where the VVV near-infrared measurements provide a more accurate determination of its proper motions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 18 pages, 14 Figures, 9 Tables

We present results on the stellar density radial profile of the outer regions of NGC6779, a Milky Way globular cluster recently proposed as a candidate member of the Gaia Sausage structure, a merger remnant of a massive dwarf galaxy with the Milky Way. Taking advantage of the Pan-STARRS PS1 public astrometric and photometric catalogue, we built the radial profile for the outermost cluster regions using horizontal branch and main sequence stars, separately, in order to probe for different profile trends because of difference stellar masses. Owing to its relatively close location to the Galactic plane, we have carefully treated the chosen colour-magnitude regions properly correcting them by the amount of interstellar extinction measured along the line-of-side of each star, as well as cleaned them from the variable field star contamination observed across the cluster field. In the region spanning from the tidal to the Jacobi radii the resulting radial profiles show a diffuse extended halo, with an average power law slope of -1. While analysing the relationships between the Galactocentric distance, the half-mass density, the half-light radius, the slope of the radial profile of the outermost regions, the internal dynamical evolutionary stage, among others, we found that NGC6779 shows structural properties similar to those of the remaining Gaia Sausage candidate globular clusters, namely, they are massive clusters (>10^5Mo) in a moderately early dynamical evolutionary stage, with observed extra-tidal structures., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We explore the possibility of searching for extratidal features around the Galactic globular cluster NGC362 using the Gaia DR2 together with a modified version of a classical statistical decontamination algorithm. Our results suggest that an important stellar component is associated with this globular cluster, which is perfectly distinguishable from the populations in the Small Magellanic Cloud and that of the nearby NGC104 (47 Tucanae). Thanks to the recent wide-area photometric surveys, the number of star cluster candidates have risen exponentially in the last few years. Most detections, however, are based only on the presence of an overdensity of stars in a given region, or an overdensity of variable stars, regardless of their distance. As candidates, their detection has not been dynamically confirmed. Therefore, it is currently unknown how many, and which ones, of the published candidates, are true clusters, and which ones are chance alignments. We present a method to detect and confirm star clusters based on the spatial distribution, coherence in motion and appearance on the color-magnitude diagram. We explain and apply it to one new star cluster, and several candidate star clusters published in the literature. The presented method is based on data from the Second Data Release of Gaia complemented with data from the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea survey for the innermost bulge regions. It consists of a nearest neighbors algorithm applied simultaneously over spatial coordinates, star color, and proper motions, in order to detect groups of stars that are close in the sky, move coherently and define narrow sequences in the color-magnitude diagram, such as a young main sequence or a red giant branch. We present deep near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the globular cluster 2MASS-GC03 projected in the Galactic disk using MMIRS on the Clay telescope (Las Campanas Observatory) and VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey (VVV) data. Most probable cluster member candidates were identified from near-infrared photometry. Out of ten candidates that were followed-up spectroscopically, five have properties of cluster members, from which we calculate = -0.9 +- 0.2 and a radial velocity of v_r > = -78 +- 12km/s. A distance of 10.8kpc is estimated from 3 likely RRLyrae members. Given that the cluster is currently at a distance of 4.2kpc from the Galactic center, the cluster's long survival time of an estimated 11.3 +- 1.2Gyr strengthens the case for its globular-cluster nature. It is of broad interest for galaxy formation theory to carry out a full inventory of the numbers and properties of dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume, both satellites and isolated ones. Ultra-deep imaging in wide areas of the sky with small amateur telescopes can help to complete the census of these hitherto unknown low surface brightness galaxies, which cannot be detected by the current resolved stellar population and HI surveys. We report the discovery of Donatiello I, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy located one degree from the star Mirach (Beta And) in a deep image taken with an amateur telescope. The color--magnitude diagram obtained from follow-up observations obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (La Palma, Spain) reveals that this system is beyond the Local Group and is mainly composed of old stars. The absence of young stars and HI emission in the ALFALFA survey are typical of quenched dwarf galaxies. Our photometry suggests a distance modulus for this galaxy of (m-M)=27.6 +/- 0.2 (3.3 Mpc), although this distance cannot yet be established securely owing to the crowding effects in our color--magnitude diagram. At this distance, Donatiello I's absolute magnitude (M_v =-8.3), surface brightness (mu_v=26.5 mag arcsec^-2) and stellar content are similar to the "classical" Milky Way companions Draco or Ursa Minor. The projected position and distance of Donatiello I are consistent with being a dwarf satellite of the closest S0-type galaxy NGC 404 ("Mirach's Ghost"). We report the discovery of a thin stellar stream - which we name the Jet stream - crossing the constellations of Hydra and Pyxis. The discovery was made in data from the SLAMS survey, which comprises deep $g$ and $r$ imaging for a $650$ square degree region above the Galactic disc performed by the CTIO Blanco + DECam. SLAMS photometric catalogues will be made publicly available. The stream is approximately 0.18 degrees wide and 10 degrees long, though it is truncated by the survey footprint. Its colour-magnitude diagram is consistent with an old, metal-poor stellar population at a heliocentric distance of approximately 29 kpc. We corroborate this measurement by identifying a spatially coincident overdensity of likely blue horizontal branch stars at the same distance. We have derived from VIMOS spectroscopy the radial velocities for a sample of 71 stars selected from CFHT/Megacam photometry around the Galactic globular cluster NGC7492. In the resulting velocity distribution, it is possible to distinguish two relevant non-Galactic kinematic components along the same line of sight: a group of stars at $\langle{v_{\rm r}}\rangle \sim 125$km s$^{-1}$ which is compatible with the velocity of the old leading arm of the Sagittarius tidal stream, and a larger number of objects at $\langle{v_{\rm r}}\rangle \sim -110$km s$^{-1}$ that might be identified as members of the trailing wrap of the same stream. The systemic velocity of NGC7492 set at $v_{\rm r} \sim -177$km s$^{-1}$ differs significantly from that of both components, thus our results confirm that this cluster is not one of the globular clusters deposited by the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal in the Galactic halo, even if it is immersed in the stream. We report the results of a systematic photometric survey of the peripheral regions of a sample of 14 globular clusters in the outer halo of the Milky Way at distances dGC > 25 kpc from the Galactic Centre. The survey is aimed at searching for the remnants of the host satellite galaxies where these clusters could originally have been formed before being accreted on to the Galactic halo. The limiting surface brightness varies within our sample, but reaches μV, lim = 30-32 mag arcsec-2. For only two globular clusters (NGC 7492 and Whiting 1; already suggested to be associated with the Sagittarius galaxy), we detect extended stellar populations that cannot be associated with either the clusters themselves or with the surrounding Galactic field population. We show that the lack of substructures around globular clusters at these Galactocentric distances is still compatible with the predictions of cosmological simulations whereby in the outer halo the Galactic globular cluster system is built up through hierarchical accretion at early epochs.

In recent years, we have gathered enough evidence showing that most of the Galactic globular clusters extend well beyond their King tidal radii and fill their Jacobi radii in the form of “extended stellar haloes”. In some cases, because of the interaction with the Milky Way, stars are able to exceed the Jacobi radius, generating tidal tails which may be used to trace the mass distribution in the Galaxy. In this work, we use the precious information provided by the space mission Gaia (photometry, parallaxes and proper motions) to analyze NGC 362 in the search for member stars in its surroundings. Our preliminar results suggest that it is possible to identify member stars and tidal features up to distances of a few degrees from the globular cluster center.

We present DECam imaging for the peculiar Galactic globular clusters NGC1851, NGC1904 (M79), NGC2298 and NGC2808. Our deep photometry reveals that all the clusters have an important contribution of stars beyond their King tidal radii and present tails with different morphologies. We have also explored the surroundings of the clusters where the presence of the Canis Major overdensity and/or the low Galactic latitude Monoceros ring at d~8kpc is evident. A second stellar system is found at d~17kpc and spans at least 18deg x 15deg in the sky. As one of the possible scenarios to explain that feature, we propose that the unveiled system is part of Monoceros explained as a density wave moving towards the outer Milky Way. Alternatively, the unveiled system might be connected with other known halo substructures or associated with the progenitor dwarf galaxy of NGC1851 and NGC1904, which are widely considered accreted globular clusters., 15 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables. We use deep multi-epoch near-IR images of the VISTA Variables in the V��a L��ctea (VVV) Survey to search for RR Lyrae stars towards the Southern Galactic plane. Here we report the discovery of a group of RR Lyrae stars close together in VVV tile d025. Inspection of the VVV images and PSF photometry reveals that most of these stars are likely to belong to a globular cluster, that matches the position of the previously known star cluster FSR\,1716. The stellar density map of the field yields a $>100$ sigma detection for this candidate globular cluster, that is centered at equatorial coordinates $RA_{J2000}=$16:10:30.0, $DEC_{J2000}=-$53:44:56; and galactic coordinates $l=$329.77812, $b=-$1.59227. The color-magnitude diagram of this object reveals a well populated red giant branch, with a prominent red clump at $K_s=13.35 \pm 0.05$, and $J-K_s=1.30 \pm 0.05$. We present the cluster RR Lyrae positions, magnitudes, colors, periods and amplitudes. The presence of RR Lyrae indicates an old globular cluster, with age $>10$ Gyr. We classify this object as an Oosterhoff type I globular cluster, based on the mean period of its RR Lyrae type ab, $=0.540$ days, and argue that this is a relatively metal-poor cluster with $[Fe/H] = -1.5 \pm 0.4$ dex. The mean extinction and reddening for this cluster are $A_{K_s}=0.38 \pm 0.02$, and $E(J-K_s)=0.72 \pm 0.02$ mag, respectively, as measured from the RR Lyrae colors and the near-IR color-magnitude diagram. We also measure the cluster distance using the RR Lyrae type ab stars. The cluster mean distance modulus is $(m-M)_0 = 14.38 \pm 0.03$ mag, implying a distance $D = 7.5 \pm 0.2$ kpc, and a Galactocentric distance $R_G=4.3$ kpc., 7 pages, 4 figures. ApJL, in press

We investigate the association of Whiting 1 with the Sagittarius tidal stream by obtaining radial velocities for a sample of 101 stars observed with VIMOS. Our results reveal the presence of a component of the Sagittarius tidal stream with a radial velocity – and distance – compatible with that of the globular cluster. Therefore, we conclude that Whiting1 was formed in the interior of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy and later accreted by the Milky Way. In addition, our data also reveal the detection for the first time of an ancient wrap of the Sagittarius tidal stream along the same line-of-sight and at the same heliocentric distance.

In the hierarchical formation scenario in which the outer halo of the Milky Way is the result of the continuous accretion of low-mass galaxies, a fraction of the Galactic globular cluster system might have originated in and been accreted with already extinct dwarf galaxies. In this context, we expect that the remnants of these progenitor galaxies might be still populating the surroundings of those accreted globulars. In this work, we present wide-field photometry of a sample of 23 globular clusters in the Galactocentric distance range 10 < Rg < 40kpc, which we use to search for remnants of their hypothetical progenitor systems. Our deep photometry reveals the presence of underlying stellar populations along the line-of-sight of about half of the globulars included in our sample. Among the detections lying in the footprint of the Sagittarius tidal stream, which we identify via the comparison with its orbit derived from numerical simulations, only Whiting1 and NGC7492 seem to be inmersed in that remnant at a compatible heliocentric distance. We also confirm the existence of a subjacent Main-Sequence feature in the surroundings of NGC1851. In this work we use structural properties of Milky Way's outer halo ($R_G > 25\,\mathrm{kpc}$) satellites (dwarf spheroidal galaxies, ultra-faint dwarf galaxies and globular clusters) derived from deep, wide-field and homogeneous data, to present evidence of a correlation in the S\'ersic index v/s effective radius plane followed by a large fraction of outer halo globular clusters and satellite dwarf galaxies. We show that this correlation can be entirely reproduced by fitting empirical relations in the central surface brightness v/s absolute magnitude and S\'ersic index v/s absolute magnitude parameter spaces, and by assuming the existence of two types of outer halo globular clusters: one of high surface brightness (HSB group), with properties similar to inner halo clusters; and another of low surface brightness (LSB group), which share characteristics with dwarf spheroidal and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. Given the similarities of LSB clusters with dwarf spheroidal and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, we discuss the possibility that outer halo clusters also originated inside dark matter halos and that tidal forces from different galaxy host's potentials are responsible for the different properties between HSB and LSB clusters., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) has contributed with deep multi-epoch photometry of the Galactic bulge and the adjacent part of the disk over 526 square degrees. More than a hundred cluster candidates have been reported thanks to this survey. We present the fifth article in a series of papers focused on young and massive clusters discovered in the VVV survey. In this paper, we present the physical characterization of five clusters with a spectroscopically confirmed OB-type stellar population. To characterize the clusters, we used near-infrared photometry ($J$, $H,$ and $K_S$) from the VVV survey and near-infrared $K$-band spectroscopy from ISAAC at VLT, following the methodology presented in the previous articles of the series. All clusters in our sample are very young (ages between 1-20 Myr), and their total mass are between $(1.07^{+0.40}_{-0.30})\cdot10^2$ $M_{\odot}$ and $(4.17^{+4.15}_{-2.08})\cdot10^3$ $M_{\odot}$. We observed a relation between the clusters total mass $M_{ecl}$ and the mass of their most massive stellar member $m_{max}$, even for clusters with an age $, Comment: Accepted for publication, A&A

We present a study of the kinematics of 101 stars observed with VIMOS around Whiting1, a globular cluster embedded in the Sagittarius tidal stream. The obtained velocity distribution shows the presence of two wraps of that halo substructure at the same heliocentric distance as that of the cluster and with well differentiated mean radial velocities. The most prominent velocity component seems to be associated with the trailing arm of Sagittarius with $$ ~ -130 km/s, which is consistent with the velocity of Whiting1. This result supports that this globular cluster was formed in Sagittarius and recently accreted by the Milky Way. The second component with $$ ~ 120 km/s might correspond to the leading arm of Sagittarius, which has been predicted by numerical simulations but with no conclusive observational evidence of its existence presented so far. This detection of the old leading wrap of Sagittarius in the southern hemisphere may be used to confirm and further constrain the models for its orbit and evolution., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present the results of a spectroscopic survey performed in the outskirts of the globular cluster NGC1851 with VIMOS@VLT. The radial velocities of 107 stars in a region between 12' and 33' around the cluster have been derived. We clearly identify the cluster stellar population over the entire field of view, indicating the presence of a significant fraction of stars outside the tidal radius predicted by King models. We also find tentative evidence of a cold (sigma_v< 20 km/s) peak in the distribution of velocities at v_r~180 km/s constituted mainly by Main Sequence stars whose location in the color-magnitude diagram is compatible with a stream at a similar distance of this cluster. If confirmed, this evidence would strongly support the extra-Galactic origin of this feature.

Using deep photometric data from WFC@INT and WFI@ESO2.2m we measure the outer number density profiles of 19 stellar clusters located in the inner region of the Milky Way halo (within a Galactocentric distance range of 10-30 kpc) in order to assess the impact of internal and external dynamical processes on the spatial distribution of stars. Adopting power-law fitting templates, with index $-\gamma$ in the outer region, we find that the clusters in our sample can be divided in two groups: a group of massive clusters ($ \ge 10^5 $ M_sun) that has relatively flat profiles with $2.5 4$) and clear signatures of interaction with the Galactic tidal field. We refer to these two groups as 'tidally unaffected' and 'tidally affected', respectively. Our results also show a clear trend between the slope of the outer parts and the half-mass density of these systems, which suggests that the outer density profiles may retain key information on the dominant processes driving the dynamical evolution of Globular Clusters.

We used deep wide field photometric observations to derive the fraction of binary systems in a sample of five high-latitude Galactic open clusters. By analysing the color distribution of Main Sequence stars we derived the minimum fraction of binary systems required to reproduce the observed color-magnitude diagram morphologies. We found that all the analysed clusters contain a minimum binary fraction larger than 11% within the core radius. The estimated global fractions of binary systems range from 35% to 70% depending on the cluster. The comparison with homogeneous estimates performed in globular clusters indicates that open clusters hold a significantly higher fraction of binary systems, as predicted by theoretical models and N-body simulations. A dependence of the relative fraction of binary systems on the cluster mass has been detected, suggesting that the binary disruption within the cluster core is the dominant process that drives the fraction of binaries in stellar systems., 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

The origin of the Galactic halo stellar structure known as the Monoceros ring is still under debate. In this work, we study that halo substructure using deep CFHT wide-field photometry obtained for the globular clusters NGC2419 and Koposov2, where the presence of Monoceros becomes significant because of their coincident projected position. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometry and spectroscopy in the area surrounding these globulars and beyond, where the same Monoceros population is detected, we conclude that a second feature, not likely to be associated with Milky Way disk stars along the line-of-sight, is present as foreground population. Our analysis suggests that the Monoceros ring might be composed of an old stellar population of age t ~ 9Gyr and a new component ~ 4Gyr younger at the same heliocentric distance. Alternatively, this detection might be associated with a second wrap of Monoceros in that direction of the sky and also indicate a metallicity spread in the ring. Three RR Lyrae overdensity candidates in the southern sky have been studied using low resolution spectra obtained with the Goodman spectrograph at SOAR. We search for unidentified velocity peaks indicative of the possible presence of streams within the overdensities. Our results suggest that all three overdensities present an excess of radial velocity signal at high mean radial velocities which cannot be explained as a contribution from any known Galactic component.

A candidate diffuse stellar substructure was previously reported in the halo of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4449 by Karachentsev et al. We map and analyze this feature using a unique combination of deep integrated-light images from the Black Bird 0.5-meter telescope, and high-resolution wide-field images from the 8-meter Subaru telescope, which resolve the nebulosity into a stream of red giant branch stars, and confirm its physical association with NGC 4449. The properties of the stream imply a massive dwarf spheroidal progenitor, which after complete disruption will deposit an amount of stellar mass that is comparable to the existing stellar halo of the main galaxy. The ratio between luminosity or stellar-mass between the two galaxies is ~1:50, while the indirectly measured dynamical mass-ratio, when including dark matter, may be ~1:10-1:5. This system may thus represent a "stealth" merger, where an infalling satellite galaxy is nearly undetectable by conventional means, yet has a substantial dynamical influence on its host galaxy. This singular discovery also suggests that satellite accretion can play a significant role in building up the stellar halos of low-mass galaxies, and possibly in triggering their starbursts., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press. [Abridged] Within the hierarchical framework for galaxy formation, minor merging and tidal interactions are expected to shape all large galaxies to the present day. As a consequence, most seemingly normal disk galaxies should be surrounded by spatially extended stellar 'tidal features' of low surface brightness. As part of a pilot survey for such interaction signatures, we have carried out ultra deep, wide field imaging of 8 isolated spiral galaxies in the Local Volume, with data taken at small (D=0.1-0.5m) robotic telescopes that provide exquisite surface brightness sensitivity (mu_V)~28.5$ mag/arcsec^2). This initial observational effort has led to the discovery of six previously undetected extensive (to ~30 kpc) stellar structures in the halos surrounding these galaxies, likely debris from tidally disrupted satellites. In addition, we confirm and clarify several enormous stellar over-densities previously reported in the literature, but never before interpreted as tidal streams. Even this pilot sample of galaxies exhibits strikingly diverse morphological characteristics of these extended stellar features: great circle-like features that resemble the Sagittarius stream surrounding the Milky Way, remote shells and giant clouds of presumed tidal debris far beyond the main stelar body, as well as jet-like features emerging from galactic disks. A qualitative comparison with available simulations set in a Lambda-Cold Dark Matter cosmology shows that the extraordinary variety of stellar morphologies detected in this pilot survey matches that seen in those simulations. The common existence of these tidal features around 'normal' disk galaxies and the morphological match to the simulations constitutes new evidence that these theoretical models also apply to a large number of other Milky Way-mass disk galaxies in the Local Volume., Accepted for publicacion in The Astronomical Journal. Cosmological models predict that large galaxies like the Milky Way formed from the accretion of smaller stellar systems. The most spectacular of these merger events are stellar tidal streams, rivers of stars and dark matter that envelop the discs of spiral galaxies. We present a research project for a collaboration with amateur astronomers in the study of the formation process of our Galaxy. The main objective is the search for RR Lyrae variable stars in the known stellar streams (Sagitarius, Monoceros, Orphan, etc) a project that can be carried out using small telescopes. The catalogue of candidate variable stars were selected from SDSS data based in colour criteria and it will be sent to interested amateur astronomers who wish to participate in scientific research in one of the most active and competitive topics in Galactic astronomy.
