Coastal boulders or mega-clasts, named huracanolitos in Cuba, are found along many rocky shores. They result from storms/hurricanes or tsunamis, but despite being potentially important indicators for hazard assessment, their mode of emplacement is typically unknown. We studied a coastal boulder that is probably the largest one ever described on Cuba Island. Located on a low-lying coral reef terrace on the SE Cuban shore, the reefal limestone boulder is emplaced seaward of the ruins of the Bucanero resort. The latter was built in 1989, suffered from Hurricanes Ivan (2004) and Dennis (2005), and, in October 2012, was totally destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Despite these extreme climatic events, satellite images obtained since 1962 show no movement of the block. In order to analyse the boulder and its morphological context, we have analysed its position, shape and its morphological environment. To determine its volume, we developed a low-cost, open-source Structure from Motion photogrammetry (SfM) procedure using a simple 3D spherical target (diameter 30 ± 0.2 x 10-3 m). Using various hydrodynamic equations, we calculated the breaking wave height and associated energy responsible for the dislocation of the coral reef terrace and transport of the boulder. To determine the exposure time of the block on the terrace, we performed 36Cl analysis and U/Th dating on post-depositional secondary calcite. From these data, the climatic or tsunamigenic (by earthquake or gravity event) origin is discussed. Offshore islands may furnish valuable information regarding deformation rates, their controlling mechanisms, and the dynamics of the upper crust in offshore areas along subduction zones, which otherwise would be difficult to quantify by direct observations. Here we study active deformation and faulting at glacial-cycle time scales in the Kythera Island, located in the southwestern part of the Hellenic subduction zone, between Crete and the Peloponnesus. The Kythera Island exposes an outstanding sequence of more than twelve levels of marine terraces that depict the active uplift of the island. These terraces are offset by several NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW-oriented active faults. We use high-resolution topography combined with morphometric analysis to map the marine terraces and to estimate the heave and throw rates of the main faults on the island. We divide the marine terrace sequence into two groups, the higher marine terraces (260 – 480 masl) comprising composite rasa surfaces, and the lower terraces (20 – 220 masl) characterized by staircase morphologies. We focus on the two main faults of the island, defined as F1 and F2, which display right- and left-lateral and dip-slip displacements, offsetting the marine terrace risers and treads. We link the activity of these faults with the occurrence of intermediate-depth and strong magnitude earthquakes such as the Mw 6.6 and 6.7 that occurred in the area of Kythera in 1903 and 2006, respectively. Further dating of marine terrace surfaces and structural analysis will be carried out in the next months in order to correlate the marine terraces with Marine Isotope Stages and to estimate heave and throw rates of the faults. Our work emphasizes the importance of carrying observations in islands to elucidate the deformation rates in offshore areas of subduction zones.

The coastal morphology of islands may furnish valuable information regarding deformation rates, their controlling mechanisms and the dynamics of the upper crust in offshore areas along subduction zones. We divide the marine terrace sequence into two groups, the higher marine terraces (260 – 480 masl) include polygenic rasa surfaces, the lower terraces (20 – 220 masl) are characterized by staircase morphologies. Based on a proposed correlation with sea level curves, we estimated ages ranging between MIS 17 and MIS 22 (712 – 1000 ka) for the higher terraces and between MIS 5 and MIS 15 (125 – 620 ka) for the lower terraces. We focus on the two main faults of the island, defined as F1 and F2, they display right- and left-lateral and dip slip displacements, offsetting the marine terrace risers and treads and producing local drainage anomalies. Based on the proposed terrace ages we derived preliminary heave rates between 0.3 and 0.5 m/ka for the right-lateral fault F1 and between 0.8 and 1 m/ka for the left-lateral fault F2. Mean throw rates vary between 0.01 m/ka and 0.03 m/ka for F1 and F2 respectively. We link the activity of these faults with the occurrence of intermediate-depth and strong magnitude earthquakes such as the Mw 6.6 and 6.7 occurred in the area of Kythira in 1903 and 2006, respectively. Further dating of marine terrace deposits and surfaces, and structural analysis will be carried soon to refine our preliminary estimates. Our work emphasizes on the importance of studying islands to elucidate vertical and horizontal deformation rates in offshore areas of subduction zones.

The tectonically active western coast of South America is characterized by the accumulation of deformation that contributes to permanent uplift of the Andean forearc at glacial-cycle timescales. However, the individual mechanisms responsible for long-term coastal uplift are still debated, mostly because analyses at continental-scale have not been carried out as yet. In coastal realms, permanent deformation is often estimated from marine terraces, which depict the interplay between wave erosion, tectonic uplift, and sea-level changes. Based on ~2000 elevation measurements of last interglacial marine terraces, we performed wavelength analyses using fast Fourier transforms. We compared the resulting uplift-rate signal with various tectonic processes and subduction parameters associated with the accumulation of permanent deformation. We detected a constant background signal of uplift along the South American margin (median rate: 0.22 mm/yr), which is disturbed by short-, intermediate- and long-wavelength changes between ~20 and ~800 km wavelengths, with the most prominent wavelengths at scales of ~500 km. Similarities between the wavelength spectra of uplift rate and signals from tectonic parameters suggest potential correlations, although multiple individual mechanisms usually contribute to a larger wavelength peak or to a certain range of wavelengths. For instance, crustal faulting is responsible for short-wavelength deformation (W>7.5) mostly cover wavelength ranges from ~100 to 200 km, despite reaching wavelengths over 600 km as well. The subduction of bathymetric anomalies and the extent of interseismic locking correlate with intermediate wavelengths (~200 to ~500 km), whereas residual gravity anomalies, basal friction, and background seismicity correlate with long-wavelength deformation (>500 km). We suggest that the constant background signal of uplift rate results from two possible mechanisms: (a) a combination of multiple processes acting at different wavelengths, times and locations over millennial timescales or (b) a single unidentified process acting homogeneously along the western South American margin. With this study, we highlight the application of novel signal analysis approaches to elucidate the mechanisms driving surface deformation in subduction zones on different spatial and temporal scales.

Tectonically active coasts are dynamic environments characterized by the presence of multiple marine terraces formed by the combined effects of wave-erosion, tectonic uplift, and sea-level oscillations at glacial-cycle timescales. Well-preserved erosional terraces from the last interglacial sea-level highstand are ideal marker horizons for reconstructing past sea-level positions and calculating vertical displacement rates, which can be subsequently compared to short-term coastal deformation patterns associated with the earthquake cycle. We carried out an almost continuous mapping of the last interglacial marine terrace along ~5,000 km of the western coast of South America between 1°N and 40°S. We used quantitatively replicable approaches constrained by published terrace-age estimates to ultimately compare elevations and patterns of uplifted terraces with tectonic and climatic parameters in order to evaluate the controlling mechanisms for the formation and preservation of marine terraces, and crustal deformation. Uncertainties were estimated on the basis of measurement errors and the distance from referencing points. Overall, our results indicate a median elevation of 30.1 m, which would imply a median uplift rate of 0.22 m/ka averaged over the past ~125 ka. The patterns of terrace elevation and uplift rate display high-amplitude (~100–200 m) and long-wavelength (~102 km) structures at the Manta Peninsula (Ecuador), the San Juan de Marcona area (central Peru), and the Arauco Peninsula (south-central Chile). Medium-wavelength structures occur at the Mejillones Peninsula and Topocalma in Chile, while short-wavelength (< 10 km) features are for instance located near Los Vilos, Valparaíso, and Carranza, Chile. We interpret the long-wavelength deformation to be controlled by deep-seated processes at the plate interface such as the subduction of major bathymetric anomalies like the Nazca and Carnegie ridges. In contrast, short-wavelength deformation may be primarily controlled by sources in the upper plate such as crustal faulting, which, however, may also be associated with the subduction of topographically less pronounced bathymetric anomalies and varying distances to the trench. Latitudinal differences in climate additionally control the formation and preservation of marine terraces. Based on our synopsis we propose that increasing wave height and tidal range result in enhanced erosion and morphologically well-defined marine terraces in south-central Chile. Conversely, river incision and lateral scouring in areas with high precipitation may degrade marine terraces. Our study emphasizes the importance of using systematic measurements and uniform, quantitative methodologies to characterize and correctly interpret marine terraces at regional scales, especially if they are used to unravel tectonic and climatic forcing mechanisms of their formation.

The southern margin of the Central Anatolian Plateau (CAP) records a strong uplift phase after the early Middle Pleistocene, which has been related to the slab break‐off of the subducting Arabian plate beneath the Anatolian microplate. During the last 450 kyr the area underwent an uplift phase at a mean rate of ~3.2 m/kyr, as suggested by Middle Pleistocene marine sediments exposed at ~1,500 m above sea level. These values are significantly higher than the 1.0–1.5 m/kyr estimated since the Late Pleistocene, suggesting temporal variations in uplift rate. To estimate changes in uplift rate during the Pleistocene we studied the marine terraces along the CAP southern margin, mapping the remnants of the platforms and their associated deposits in the field, and used the TerraceM software to identify the position and elevation of associated shoreline angles. We used shoreline angles and the timing of Quaternary marine sedimentation as constrains for a Landscape Evolution Model that simulates wave erosion of an uplifting coast. We applied random optimization algorithms and minimization statistics to find the input parameters that better reproduce the morphology of CAP marine terraces. The best‐fitting uplift rate history suggests a significative increase from 1.9 to 3.5 m/kyr between 500 and 200 kyr, followed by an abrupt decrease to 1.4 m/kyr until the present. Our results agree with slab break‐off models, which suggest a strong uplift pulse during slab rupture followed by a smoother decrease., Key Points: The marine terrace evolution modeling allowed the reconstruction of the Quaternary uplift trend. In seismically-active regions, mapping capable faults and estimating their recurrence time is the first step to assess seismic hazards. Fault maps are commonly based on geologic and geomorphic features evident at the surface; however, mapping blind faults and estimating their seismic potential is challenging because on-fault diagnostic features are absent. Here, we study the Pichilemu Fault in coastal Chile, unknown until it generated a M7.0 earthquake in 2010. The lack of evident surface faulting suggests a partly-hidden blind fault. Using off-fault deformed marine terraces, we estimate a slip-rate of 0.42 ± 0.04 m/ka, which when integrated with deformation estimated from satellite geodesy during the 2010 earthquake suggests a 2.5 ± 0.25 ka recurrence time for M6.6-6.9 extensional earthquakes. We propose that extension is associated with stress changes during megathrust earthquakes and accommodated by sporadic slip during upper-plate earthquakes. Our results have implications for assessing the seismic potential of cryptic faults along seismically-active coasts.

We present a comprehensive relative sea-level (RSL) database for north, central, and south-central Chile (18.5 degrees S - 43.6 degrees S) using a consistent, systematic, and internationally comparable approach. Despite its latitudinal extent, this coastline has received little rigorous or systematic attention and details of its RSL history remain largely unexplored. To address this knowledge gap, we re-evaluate the geological context and age of previously published sea-level indicators, providing 78 index points and 84 marine or terrestrial limiting points spanning from 11 ka to the present day. Many data points were originally collected for research in other fields and have not previously been examined for the information they provide on sea-level change. Additionally, we describe new sea-level data from four sites located between the Gulf of Arauco and Valdivia. By compiling RSL histories for 11 different regions, we summarise current knowledge of Chilean RSL. These histories indicate mid Holocene sea levels above present in all regions, but at highly contrasting elevations from similar to 30 m to

High-resolution records of lake-level changes are crucial to elucidate the impact of local and global climatic changes in lacustrine basins. The Late Quaternary evolution of the Dead Sea has been characterized by substantial variability apparently linked with global climatic changes, beign subject of many research efforts since decades. Previous studies have defined two main lake phases, the Lake Lisan and the Dead Sea, the earlier was a highstand period that lasted between ~70 and ~15 ka, the latter was the lowstand period that persisted until the present. Here we focus on the switch between Lake Lisan and Dead Sea studying fossil lake shorelines, a sequence that comprises dozens of levels exposed along the rims of the Dead Sea, containing abundant fossil stromatolites that we dated by mean of radiocarbon and U-decay series. We determined 90 radiocarbon and 35 U-Th ages from stromatolites from almost every shoreline level. We compared U-Th and radiocarbon ages to estimating a radiocarbon reservoir between 0.2 and 0.8 ka, used to correct the remaining radiocarbon ages before calibration. The resulting ages range between ~45 and ~20 ka. Dating was complemented with analysis of stable oxygen and carbon isotopes. Furthermore, we applied a distributed hydrological balance model to constrain past precipitation and temperature conditions. Our results suggest that the duration of the last Lake Lisan highstand was shorter than previously estimated. Taking this at face value, the switch between Lake Lisan and Dead Sea occurred at ~28 ka, ~10 ka earlier than previously suggested. Oxygen and carbon isotopes show a consistent pattern, displaying a switch between wet and dry conditions at ~28 ka. Preliminary results from the hydrological model indicate a much stronger sensitivity of the lake level to precipitation amounts than to air temperature. From our results we can’t observe a clear link between global temperature variations and lake-level changes in the Lisan/Dead Sea lakes. Similar non-linear response to northern hemisphere climatic changes have been also documented in Holocene Dead Sea paleoclimatic records, suggesting that global climatic variations may led to variable lake-level responses. The results of this study adds further complexity to the understanding of factors controlling climate variability in the Dead Sea.

The Salar de Uyuni spans almost the entire width of the Bolivian Altiplano, thus providing a potential record of large wavelength deformation, which can be produced by various mechanism across the central Andean plateau interior. This study focuses on the mapping of paleo-lake terraces, which are geomorphic markers that represent past lake level positions and can be used to study differential vertical deformation. High-resolution TanDEM-X topography for the region, in combination with satellite imagery, reveal a wide range of well-preserved lake terraces in the Salar. Eleven prominent terraces have been identified in the study area at elevations ranging from 3701 m to 3815 m and with ages ranging from ~11.7-16.1 ka based on correlation with published ages. The elevation difference between the younger terraces (Level 1 to 5) is ~51 m in the west and ~46 m in the east, indicating an eastward tilting of about ~5 m across the Salar de Uyuni. The older terraces (Level 8 to 11), however, record an elevation difference of ~20 m in the west and ~ 24 m in the east, indicating a westward tilt of ~4 m. Thus a change in the polarity of tilting of the Uyuni paleo-lake basin occurred between the formation of terraces 5 to 8 from 13.1-14.8 ka.We discuss different mechanisms that might drive this large wavelength deformation including 1) eastward tilting as a direct consequence of horizontal shortening in a compressional setting and “backtilting” by stress release during thrusting on a deep-seated structure, 2) addition of differentiated igneous bodies derived from the mantle perhaps associated with delamination processes, and 3) seismic coupling along the Chile subduction zone margin. Removal or delamination of mantle lithosphere is unlikely to produce 4 m of uplift in the relatively short, ~2 ka time span of our observations. Well-documented megathrust coupling and the subduction zone seismic cycle would explain the short time span but is unlikely to create significant vertical deformation ~200 km from the coast. We favour and explore the hypothesis that Andean shortening leads to large wavelength flexure (as the expression of an elastic deformation) as a result of strain accumulation that is eventually released by slip along structures beneath the Eastern Cordillera that are perhaps related to the active decollement and fold-and-thrust belt that comprise the Subandean ranges. The observed pattern of paleo-lake terraces may serve as a geologic archive recording a phase of major backarc seismic activity at ~14 ka.

Abstract:Giant subduction earthquakes (MW 8 to 9) are usually characterized by heterogeneous slip distributions, including regions of very pronounced slip that are commonly known as asperities. However, it is a matter of ongoing debate whether asperities constitute persistent geologic features or if they rather represent transient features related to the release of elastic strain accumulated in areas of seismic gaps. Recent giant earthquakes along the coast of north-central Chile, such as the 2010 Maule (M8.8), 2015 Illapel (M8.3), and 2014 Iquique (M8.2) events, were all associated with the rupture of single or multiple seismic asperities. Here we compare permanent deformation and seismic-cycle deformation patterns and rates along the 2015 Illapel earthquake rupture zone (~30° to 32°S) spanning orbital to decadal time scales. To decipher permanent deformation features manifested in the upper plate of the subduction system we identified and correlated the elevations of Late Pleistocene marine terraces using TanDEM-X digital topography and previously published terrace ages. We focused on terraces related to the Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 5 and 9 (~124 ka and ~320 ka) due to their excellent preservation and lateral continuity. We furthermore compared deformation rates based on these uplifted terraces and compared them with published co-seismic slip and interseismic locking models of the Illapel earthquake. Uplift rates derived from the MIS-5 marine terraces range between 0.08 and 0.35 m/ka, while uplift rates based on MIS-9 terraces range between 0.38 to 0.96 m/ka. The higher uplift rates are found at the northern part of the Illapel rupture and these areas correlate to crustal structures (e.g. Puerto Aldea Fault). We observed a direct correlation between MIS-5 and MIS-9 uplift rates and co-seismic slip in the northern parts of the rupture while there was no clear correlation in the south at the central and southern parts of the rupture zone. The comparison between the spatial distribution of locked areas and uplift rates provided only a weak correlation for the MIS-9 terraces at the southern part of the rupture. Our results suggest that the northern part of the IIIapel rupture zone may accumulate permanent deformation during megathrust earthquakes. In contrast, accumulation of deformation at the southern part of the rupture may be controlled by activity in the neighboring seismotectonic segment. Broad warping patterns of marine terraces might reflect changes in boundary conditions at interplate depths, such as subduction of seamounts or other oceanic bathymetric features. This analysis highlights the temporal and spatial variability of deformation at convergent plate margins over multiple time scales.

Most of the seismic hazard along subduction zones is posed by great tsunamigenic earthquakes associated with the interplate megathrust fault. However, crustal faults are ubiquitous along overriding continental plates, some of which have been triggered during recent megathrust earthquakes. In Chile, the 2010 Maule earthquake (M8.8) triggered a shallow M7 earthquake on the Pichilemu fault, which had not been mapped and was unknown. In fact, M~7 earthquakes have recently occurred along unknown faults in California and New Zealand, emphasizing the need for better and more detailed mapping initiatives. A first step towards a synoptic assessment of seismic hazards posed by continental faults at the national level is mapping at a homogeneous scale to allow for a systematic comparison of faults and fault systems. Here, we present the first map of active and potentially-active faults in Chile at 1:25,000 scale, which includes published studies and newly-identified faults. All the published faults have been re-mapped using LiDAR and TanDEM-X topography, where available. Using different scaling relations, we estimate the seismic potential of all crustal faults in Chile. For specific faults where we have conducted paleoseismic and tectonic geomorphic field studies (e.g., Liquiñe-Ofqui, El Yolki, Mesamavida, and Pichilemu faults) we provide new estimates of slip rate, recurrence interval, and deformation style. We propose a segmentation model of continental faults systems in Chile, which are associated with distinct morphotectonic units and have predominant kinematics and relatively uniform slip rates. Using stress transfer models, we explore the potential feedbacks between upper-plate deformation and the megathrust seismic cycle.

The Cotentin Peninsula (Normandy, France) displays sequences of marine terraces and rasas, the latter being wide Late Cenozoic coastal erosion surfaces, that are typical of Western European coasts in Portugal, Spain, France and southern England. Remote sensing imagery and field mapping enabled reappraisal of the Cotentin coastal sequences. From bottom to top, the N Cotentin sequence includes four previously recognized Pleistocene marine terraces (T1 to T4) at elevations < 40 m as well as four higher and older rasas (R1 to R4) reaching 200 ± 5 m in elevation. Low-standing marine terraces are not observed in the central part of the Peninsula and a limited number of terraces are described to the south. The high-standing rasas are widespread all over the peninsula. Such strandline distributions reveal major changes during the Late Cenozoic. Progressive uplift of an irregular sea-floor led to subaerial exposure of bathymetric highs that were carved into rocky platforms, rasas and marine terraces. Eventually, five main islands coalesced and connected to the mainland to the south to form the Cotentin Peninsula. On the basis of previous dating of the last interglacial maximum terrace (i.e. Marine Isotopic Stage, MIS 5e), sequential morphostratigraphy and modelling, we have reappraised uplift rates and derived: (i) mean Upper Pleistocene (i.e. since MIS 5e ~ 122 +/− 6 ka, i.e. kilo annum) apparent uplift rates of 0.04 ± 0.01 mm/yr, (ii) mean Middle Pleistocene eustasy-corrected uplift rates of 0.09 ± 0.03 mm/yr, and (iii) low mean Pleistocene uplift rates of 0.01 mm/yr. Extrapolations of these slow rates combined with geological evidence implies that the formation of the sequences from the Cotentin Peninsula occurred between 3 Ma (Pliocene) and 15 Ma (Miocene), which cannot be narrowed down further without additional research. Along the coasts of Western Europe, sequences of marine terraces and rasas are widespread (169 preserve the MIS 5e benchmark). In Spain, Portugal, S England and other parts of western France, the sequences morphostratigraphy is very similar to that of Cotentin. The onset of such Western European sequences occurred during the Miocene (e.g. Spain) or Pliocene (e.g. Portugal). Most of the deformation associated with the seismic cycle in subduction zones occurs offshore, and has been therefore difficult to quantify with direct observations at millennial time scales. Here we study millennial deformation associated with an active splay-fault system in the Arauco Bay area off south-central Chile. We describe hitherto-unrecognized drowned shorelines using high-resolution multibeam bathymetry, geomorphic, sedimentologic, and paleontologic observations, and quantify uplift rates using a landscape evolution model. Along a margin-normal profile, uplift rates are 1.3 m/ka near the edge of the continental shelf, 1.5 m/ka at the emerged Santa Maria Island, -0.1 m/ka at the center of the Arauco Bay, and 0.3 m/ka in the mainland. The bathymetry images a complex pattern of folds and faults representing the surface expression of the crustal-scale Santa Maria splay fault system. We modeled surface deformation using two different structural scenarios: deep-reaching normal faults and deep-reaching reverse faults with shallow extensional structures. Our preferred model comprises a blind reverse fault extending from 3 km depth down to the plate interface at 16 km that slips at a rate between 3.0 and 3.7 m/ka. If all the splay fault slip occurs during every great megathrust earthquake, with a recurrence of ~150-200 years, the fault would slip ~0.5 m per event, equivalent to a magnitude ~6.4 earthquake. However, if the splay fault slips only with a megathrust earthquake every ~1000 years, the fault would slip ~3.7 m per event, equivalent to a magnitude ~7.5 earthquake.

In active tectonic settings dominated by strike-slip kinematics, slip partitioning across subparallel faults is a common feature; therefore, assessing the degree of partitioning and strain localization is paramount for seismic hazard assessments. Here, we estimate a slip rate of 18.8 ± 2.0 mm/year over the past 9.0 ± 0.1 ka for a single strand of the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System, which straddles the Main Cordillera in Southern Chile. This Holocene rate accounts for ~ 82% of the trench-parallel component of oblique plate convergence and is similar to million-year estimates integrated over the entire fault system. Our results imply that strain localizes on a single fault at millennial time scale but over longer time scales strain localization is not sustained. The fast millennial slip rate in the absence of historical Mw > 6.5 earthquakes along the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System implies either a component of aseismic slip or Mw ~ 7 earthquakes involving multi-trace ruptures and > 150-year repeat times. Our results have implications for the understanding of strike-slip fault system dynamics within volcanic arcs and seismic hazard assessments.

Here we explore the influence of Quaternary SL curves on the geometry of marine terrace sequences using landscape evolution models (LEMs). (IF 3.50; Q2); International audience; The morphology of marine and lacustrine terraces has been largely used to measure past sea- and lake-level positions and estimate vertical deformation in a wealth of studies focused on climate and tectonic processes. To obtain accurate morphometric assessments of terrace morphology we present TerraceM-2, an improved version of our Matlab® graphic-user interface that provides new methodologies for morphometric analyses as well as landscape evolution and fault-dislocation modeling. The new version includes novel routines to map the elevation and spatial distribution of terraces, to model their formation and evolution, and to estimate fault-slip rates from terrace deformation patterns. TerraceM-2 has significantly improves its processing speed and mapping capabilities, and includes separate functions for developing customized workflows beyond the graphic-user interface. We illustrate these new mapping and modeling capabilities with three examples: mapping lacustrine shorelines in the Dead Sea to estimate deformation across the Dead Sea Fault, landscape evolution modeling to estimate a history of uplift rates in southern Peru, and dislocation modeling of deformed marine terraces in California. These examples also illustrate the need to use topographic data of different resolutions. The new modeling and mapping routines of TerraceM-2 highlight the advantages of an integrated joint mapping and modeling approach to improve the efficiency and precision of coastal terrace metrics in both marine and lacustrine environments.

Megathrust earthquakes are commonly accompanied by increased upper-plate seismicity and occasionally triggered fault slip. In Chile, crustal faults slipped during and after the 2010 Maule (M8.8) earthquake. We studied the El Yolki fault (EYOF), a transtensional structure midways the Maule rupture not triggered in 2010. We mapped a Holocene coastal plain using light detection and ranging, which did not reveal surface ruptures. However, the inner-edge and shoreline angles along the coastal plain as well as 4.3- to 4.0-ka intertidal sediments are back-tilted on the EYOF footwall block, documenting 10 m of vertical displacement. These deformed markers imply similar to 2-mm/year throw rate, and dislocation models a slip rate of 5.6 mm/year for the EYOF. In a 5-m-deep trench, the Holocene intertidal sediments onlap to five erosive steps, interpreted as staircase wave-cut landforms formed by discrete events of relative sea level drop. We tentatively associated these steps with coseismic uplift during EYOF earthquakes between 4.3 and 4.0 ka. The Maule earthquake rupture may be subdivided into three subsegments based on coseismic slip and gravity anomalies. Coulomb stress transfer models predict neutral stress changes at the EYOF during the Maule earthquake but positive changes for a synthetic slip distribution at the central subsegment. If EYOF earthquakes were triggered by megathrust events, their slip distribution was probably focused in the central subsegment. Our study highlights the millennial variability of crustal faulting and the megathrust earthquake cycle in Chile, with global implications for assessing the hazards posed by hidden but potentially seismogenic coastal faults along subduction zones.

Great megathrust earthquakes arise from the sudden release of energy accumulated during centuries of interseismic plate convergence. The moment deficit (energy available for future earthquakes) is commonly inferred by integrating the rate of interseismic plate locking over the time since the previous great earthquake. But accurate integration requires knowledge of how interseismic plate locking changes decades after earthquakes, measurements not available for most great earthquakes. Here we reconstruct the post-earthquake history of plate locking at Guafo Island, above the seismogenic zone of the giant 1960 (M-w = 9.5) Chile earthquake, through forward modeling of land-level changes inferred from aerial imagery (since 1974) and measured by GPS (since 1994). We find that interseismic locking increased to similar to 70% in the decade following the 1960 earthquake and then gradually to 100% by 2005. Newly acquired high-resolution bathymetric data (with 5 m and 2 m grid sizes) from the continental shelf off Concepcion (Chile), in combination with seismic reflection profiles, reveal a distinctly different evolution for the Biobio submarine canyon compared to that of one of its tributaries. Both canyons are incised into the shelf of the active margin. Whereas the inner shelf appears to be mantled with unconsolidated sediment, the outer shelf shows the influence of strong bottom currents that form drifts of loose sediment and transport -material into the Biobio submarine canyon and onto the continental slope. The main stem of the Biobio Canyon is connected to the mouth of the Biobio River and currently provides a conduit for terrestrial sediment from the continental shelf to the deep seafloor. In contrast, the head of its tributary closest to the coast is located similar to 24 km offshore of the present-day coastline at 120 m water depth, and it is subject to passive sedimentation. However, canyon activity within the study area is interpreted to be controlled not only by the direct input of fluvial sediments into the canyon head facilitated by the river-mouth to canyon-head connection, but also by input from southward-directed bottom currents and possibly longshore drift. In addition, about 24 km offshore of the present-day coastline, the main stem of the Biobio Canyon has steep canyon walls next to sites of active tectonic deformation that are prone to wall failure. Mass-failure events may also foster turbidity currents and contribute to canyon feeding. In contrast, the tributary has less steep canyon walls with limited evidence of canyon-wall failure and is located down-system of bottom currents from the Biobio Canyon. It consequently receives neither fluvial nor longshore sediments. Therefore, the canyon's connectivity to fluvial or longshore sediment delivery pathways is affected by the distance of the canyon head from the coastline and the orientation of the canyon axis relative to the direction of bottom currents. The ability of a submarine canyon to act as an active conduit for large quantities of terrestrial sediment toward the deep sea during sea-level highstands may be controlled by several different conditions simultaneously. These include bottom current direction, structural deformation of the seafloor affecting canyon location and orientation as well as canyon-wall failure, shelf gradient and associated distance from the canyon head to the coast, and fluvial networks. The complex interplay between these factors may vary even within an individual canyon system, resulting in distinct levels of canyon activity on a regional scale.

The segmentation of major fault systems in subduction zones controls earthquake magnitude and location, but the causes for the existence of segment boundaries and the relationships between long-term deformation and the extent of earthquake rupture, are poorly understood. We compare permanent and seismic-cycle deformation patterns along the rupture zone of the 2010 Maule earthquake (M8.8), which ruptured 500 km of the Chile subduction margin. We analyzed the morphology of MIS-5 marine terraces using LiDAR topography and established their chronology and coeval origin with twelve luminescence ages, stratigraphy and geomorphic correlation, obtaining a virtually continuous distribution of uplift rates along the entire rupture zone. The mean uplift rate for these terraces is 0.5 m/ka. This value is exceeded in three areas, which have experienced rapid emergence of up to 1.6 m/ka; they are located at the northern, central, and southern sectors of the rupture zone, referred to as Topocalma, Carranza and Arauco, respectively. The three sectors correlate with boundaries of eight great earthquakes dating back to 1730. The Topocalma and Arauco sectors, located at the boundaries of the 2010 rupture, consist of broad zones of crustal warping with wavelengths of 60 and 90 km, respectively. These two regions coincide with the axes of oroclinal bending of the entire Andean margin and correlate with changes in curvature of the plate interface. Rapid uplift at Carranza, in turn, is of shorter wavelength and associated with footwall flexure of three crustal-scale normal faults. The uplift rate at Carranza is inversely correlated with plate coupling as well as with coseismic slip, suggesting permanent deformation may accumulate interseismically. We propose that the zones of upwarping at Arauco and Topocalma reflect changes in frictional properties of the megathrust resulting in barriers to the propagation of great earthquakes. Slip during the 1960 (M9.5) and 2010 events overlapped with the similar to 90-km-long zone of rapid uplift at Arauco; similarly, slip in 2010 and 1906 extended across the similar to 60-km-long section of the megathrust at Topocalma, but this area was completely breached by the 1730 (M similar to 9) event, which propagated southward until Carranza. Both Arauco and Topocalma show evidence of sustained rapid uplift since at least the middle Pleistocene. These two sectors might thus constitute discrete seismotectonic boundaries restraining most, but not all great earthquake ruptures. International audience; The newest generation of satellites have greatly improved the capabilities of optical imagery over the last decade. Ground resolution has increased by one order of magnitude (to sub-metric pixel images), and improved sensors allow images to be located with an absolute accuracy of within a few meters. Better-resolved images facilitate refined tectonic studies of faults, basins, terraces, and other geomorphic features as it provides the opportunity to extract detailed topographic information. We have developed high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) in eight locations in Greece from tri-stereo satellite images acquired by the new Pleiades platform of CNES. With 0.5m resolution, these DEMs are state-of-the-art in comparison to previous DEMs made from satellite imagery. In this study we explore the potential of one of these DEMs, in the eastern Gulf of Corinth, for the analysis of a flight of marine terraces.

High-resolution topographic data greatly facilitate the remote identification of geomorphic features, furnishing valuable information concerning surface processes and characterization of reference markers for quantifying tectonic deformation. Marine terraces have been used as long baseline geodetic markers of relative past sea-level positions, reflecting the interplay between vertical crustal movements and sea-level oscillations. Uplift rates may be determined from the terrace age and the elevation of its shoreline angle, a geomorphic feature that can be correlated with past sea-levels positions. A precise definition of the shoreline angle in time and space is essential to obtain reliable uplift rates with coherent spatial correlation. To improve our ability to rapidly assess and map shoreline angles at regional and local scales, we have developed TerraceM, a MATLAB (R) graphical user interface that allows the shoreline angle and its associated error to be estimated using high-resolution topography. TerraceM uses topographic swath profiles oriented orthogonally to the terrace riser. Four functions are included to analyze the swath profiles and extract the shoreline angle, from both staircase sequences of multiple terraces and rough coasts characterized by eroded remnants of emerged terrace surfaces. The former are measured by outlining the paleocliffs and paieo-platforms and finding their intersection by extrapolating linear regressions, whereas the latter are assessed by automatically detecting peaks of sea-stack tops and back-projecting them to the modern sea cliff. In the absence of rigorous absolute age determinations of marine terraces, their geomorphic age may be estimated using previously published diffusion models. Postprocessing functions are included to obtain first-order statistics of shoreline-angle elevations and their spatial distribution. TerraceM has the ability to process series of profiles from several sites in an efficient and structured workflow. Results may be exported in Google Earth and ESRI shapefile formats. The precision and accuracy of the method have been estimated from a case study at Santa Cruz, California, by comparing TerraceM results with published field measurements. The repeatability was evaluated using multiple measurements made by inexperienced users. TerraceM will improve the efficiency and precision of estimating shoreline-angle elevations in wave-cut terraces in both marine and lacustrine environments.

The architecture of coastal sequences in tectonically-active regions results mostly from a combination of sea-level and land-level changes. The objective of this study is to unravel these signals by combining sequence stratigraphy and sedimentology of near-shore sedimentary sequences in wave-built terraces. We focus on Santa María Island at the south-central Chile margin, which hosts excellent exposures of coastal sediments from Marine Isotope Stage 3. A novel method based on statistical analysis of grain-size distributions coupled with facies descriptions provided a detailed account of transgressive–regressive cycles. Radiocarbon ages from paleosols constrain the chronology between > 53 and ~ 31 cal ka BP. Because the influence of glaciations can be neglected, we calculated relative sea-level curves by tying the onset of deposition on a bedrock abrasion platform to a global sea-level curve. The observed depositional cycles match those predicted for uplift rates between 1.2 and 1.8 m/ka. The studied sedimentary units represent depositional cycles that resulted in reoccupation events of an existing marine terrace. Our study demonstrates wave-built marine terrace deposits along clastic shorelines in temperate regions can be used to distinguish between tectonic uplift and climate-induced sea-level changes.
