Background: To investigate the prognosis of patients with Multiple Myeloma (MM) after surgery, analyze the risk factors leading to adverse postoperative outcomes, and establish a nomogram. Methods: Clinical data from 154 patients with MM who underwent surgery at our institution between 2007 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Assessing and comparing patients' pain levels, quality of life, and functional status before and after surgery (P < 0.05) were considered statistically significant. The Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to estimate the median survival time. Adverse postoperative outcomes were defined as worsened symptoms, lesion recurrence, complication grade ≥ 2, or a postoperative survival period < 1 year. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the prognostic factors. Based on the logistic regression results, a nomogram predictive model was developed and calibrated. Results: Postoperative pain was significantly alleviated in patients with MM, and there were significant improvements in the quality of life and functional status (P < 0.05). The median postoperative survival was 41 months. Forty-nine patients (31.8%) experienced adverse postoperative outcomes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified patient age, duration of MM, International Staging System, preoperative Karnofsky Performance Status, and Hb < 90 g/L as independent factors influencing patient prognosis. Based on these results, a nomogram was constructed, with a C-index of 0.812. The calibration curve demonstrated similarity between the predicted and actual survival curves. Decision curve analysis favored the predictive value of the model at high-risk thresholds from 10% to-69%. COVID-19 has been suggested as a possible trigger of disease flares in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, factors associated with disease flares remain unknown. This study aimed to identify factors associated with breakthrough infection (BIs) and disease flares in patients with RA following COVID-19. We analysed data from RA patients who participated in the COVID-19 vaccination in autoimmune diseases (COVAD) study. Demographic data, patient-reported outcomes, comorbidities, pharmacologic treatment and details regarding disease flares were extracted from the COVAD database. Factors associated with disease flare-ups were determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The analysis comprised 1928 patients with RA who participated in the COVAD study. Younger age, Caucasian ethnicity, comorbidities with obstructive chronic pulmonary disease and asthma were associated with COVID-19 breakthrough infection. Moreover, younger age (odds ratio (OR): 0.98, 95% CI 0.96–0.99, p < 0.001), ethnicity other than Asian, past history of tuberculosis (OR: 3.80, 95% CI 1.12–12.94, p = 0.033), treatment with methotrexate (OR: 2.55, 95% CI: 1.56–4.17, p < 0.001), poor global physical health (OR: 1.07, 95% CI 1.00–1.15, p = 0.044) and mental health (OR: 0.91, 95% CI 0.87–0.95, p < 0.001) were independent factors associated disease flares in patients with RA. Our study highlights the impact of socio-demographic factors, clinical characteristics and mental health on disease flares in patients with RA. Background: Lymph node status is an important factor in determining preoperative treatment strategies for stage T1b–T2 esophageal cancer (EC). Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in T1b–T2 EC and to establish and validate a risk-scoring model to guide the selection of optimal treatment options. Methods: Patients who underwent upfront surgery for pT1b–T2 EC between January 2016 and December 2022 were analyzed. On the basis of the independent risk factors determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis, a risk-scoring model for the prediction of LNM was constructed and then validated. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to assess the discriminant ability of the model. Results: The incidence of LNM was 33.5% (214/638) in our cohort, 33.4% (169/506) in the primary cohort and 34.1% (45/132) in the validation cohort. Multivariate analysis confirmed that primary site, tumor grade, tumor size, depth, and lymphovascular invasion were independent risk factors for LNM (all P < 0.05), and patients were grouped based on these factors. A 7-point risk-scoring model based on these variables had good predictive accuracy in both the primary cohort (AUC, 0.749; 95% confidence interval 0.709–0.786) and the validation cohort (AUC, 0.738; 95% confidence interval 0.655–0.811). Designing efficient electrocatalysts and insight into their electrocatalytic mechanisms are significantly important for storing and converting the intermittent sustainable energy sources into clean hydrogen. In this study, we synthesize the bifunctional sulfur-doped Ni 3 Fe (NiFeS) electrocatalysts by a simple electrodeposition method only taking 30 s. After optimizing the components, it was found that the synthesized NiFeS electrocatalysts exhibit the excellent hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction performances in 1.0 M potassium hydroxide solution. The results of experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the introduced sulfur could optimize the electronic distribution, which make Ni electron-rich and Fe electron-deficient, thereby weakening the energy barriers of potential-determining steps, i.e. the absorption of H 2 O molecule on Ni sites for HER and formation of *OOH on Fe sites for OER, respectively. Besides, the NiFeS electrocatalysts are used as the bifunctional electrodes to water splitting, which only need 1.51 V to reach 10 mA·cm−2, and exhibits excellent durability and a >95% Faraday efficiency. Furthermore, the intermittent kinetic, wind and solar energies are used to power the assembled electrolyzer with NiFeS bi-electrodes to verify their great application potential. This work not only proved a deep insight into mechanism of the boosted electrocatalytic activities of NiFeS, but also the synthesized NiFeS electrocatalysts have great application prospect in the conversion of intermittent and sustainable energy sources into hydrogen by water electrocatalysis. The effects of alkyl glycoside and alcohol ether glycoside alone on the interfacial tension between n-alkanes and Liaohe crude oil and on the interfacial tension in a composite system were studied by using a rotary drop interfacial tensimeter with the addition of ethylene oxide group (EO). The effects of mass fraction of surfactant, concentration of univalent and bivalent ions and EO group on dynamic interfacial tension of the system were investigated. The results show that the two glycoside surfactants can produce strong synergistic effect with sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, and the EO chain can adjust the hydrophilic and oleophilic balance of the surfactants, so that the surfactants are more closely arranged at the interface. The increase of salinity can compress the double electron layer, make the interfacial molecules closely arranged, and reduce the interfacial tension. Prokaryotic viruses, also known as bacteriophages, play crucial roles in regulating microbial communities and have the potential for phage therapy applications. Accurate prediction of phage-host interactions is essential for understanding the dynamics of these viruses and their impacts on bacterial populations. Numerous computational methods have been developed to tackle this challenging task. However, most existing prediction models can be constrained due to the substantial number of unknown interactions in comparison to the constrained diversity of available training data. To solve the problem, we introduce a model for prokaryotic virus host prediction with graph contrastive augmentation (PHPGCA). Specifically, we construct a comprehensive heterogeneous graph by integrating virus-virus protein similarity and virus-host DNA sequence similarity information. As the backbone encoder for learning node representations in the virus-prokaryote graph, we employ LGCN, a state-of-the-art graph embedding technique. Additionally, we apply graph contrastive learning to augment the node representations without the need for additional labels. We further conducted two case studies aimed at predicting the host range of multi-species phages, helping to understand the phage ecology and evolution. Objective: This study aimed to describe the learning curve of surgeons performing tibial cortex transverse transport (TTT) and explore its safety and effectiveness during the initial stages of surgeon's learning. Methods: The clinical data of patients with diabetic foot ulcers classified as Wagner grade ≥ 2, who underwent TTT at our hospital from January 2020 to July 2021, were included in this retrospective analysis. The same physician performed all procedures. Patients were numbered according to the chronological order of their surgery dates. The cumulative sum and piecewise linear regression were used to evaluate the surgeon's learning curve, identify the cut-off point, and divide the patients into learning and mastery groups. A minimum follow-up period of 3 months was ensured for all patients. Baseline data, perioperative parameters, complications, and efficacy evaluation indicators were recorded and compared between the two groups. Results: Sixty patients were included in this study based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After completing 20 TTT surgeries, the surgeon reached the cut-off point of the learning curve. Compared to the learning group, the mastery group demonstrated a significant reduction in the average duration of the surgical procedure (34.88 min vs. 54.20 min, P < 0.05) along with a notable decrease in intraoperative fluoroscopy (9.75 times vs. 16.9 times, P < 0.05) frequency, while no significant difference was found regarding intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.318). Of the patients, seven (11.7%) experienced complications, with three (15%) and four cases (10%) occurring during the learning phase and the mastery phase, respectively. The postoperative ulcer area was significantly reduced, and the overall healing rate was 94.8%. Significant improvements were observed in postoperative VAS, ABI, and WIFI classification (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the occurrence of complications or efficacy indicators between the learning and mastery groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Surgeons can master TTT after completing approximately 20 procedures. TTT is easy, secure, and highly efficient for treating foot ulcers. Purpose: To study the influence of microRNA-138 (miR-138) on the migration and invasion of cervical cancer cells, and the underlying mechanism. Methods: Fifteen cervical carcinoma subjects were enrolled in the study. Control group comprised cervical epithelial cell line (End1/E6E7) while cervical cancer group was human cervical squamous cell carcinoma cell line c33a. Both were cultured routinely without any treatment. In miR-138 overexpression group, cells were cultured in progeny of human cervical squamous carcinoma cell line c33a infected with miR-138 gene overexpression lentivirus. Expression levels of miR-138 in excised cervical cancer tissues were determined using qPCR. Cell proliferation was determined with CCK8 assay. Immunoblotting was utilized to assay protein expression levels. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to determine mRNA expression levels, while cell migration and invasion were assessed by Transwell method. Results: There was significant down-regulation of miR-138 expression in cervical cancer tissue, relative to nearby tissues (p < 0.05). In miR-138 overexpression group, cell proliferation, number of migrated and invaded cells were significantly reduced, relative to corresponding levels in cervical cancer cells. There were significantly higher expression levels of apoptosis-related proteins FAS, Bax and FasL in miR-138 overexpression group than in cervical cancer cells, while Bcl-2 was significantly downregulated, relative to cervical cancer group (p < 0.05). In cervical cancer cells, mRNA and protein levels of SIRT1 and HIF-1a were significantly up-regulated, relative to corresponding control, but levels of HIF-1a and miR-138 were significantly reduced in overexpression group when compared to cervical cancer group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Up-regulating miR-138 in cervical cancer cells reduces HIF-1a through inhibition of SIRT1 signaling, resulting in suppression of multiplication, migration and invasion of cervical cancer cells, while enhancing apoptotic changes. Diet and circadian rhythms have been found to have a profound impact on health, disease, and aging. Skipping breakfast, eating late, and overeating have adverse effects on the body's metabolism and increase the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Disturbance of circadian rhythms has been associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other diseases. Abnormal deposition of amyloid β (Aβ) and tau proteins in the brain and impaired synaptic function are linked to cognitive dysfunction. A restrictive diet following the circadian rhythm can affect the metabolism of lipids, glucose, and amino acids such as branched chain amino acids and cysteine. These metabolic changes contribute to autophagy through molecular mechanisms such as adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), rapamycin (mTOR), D-β-hydroxybutyrate (D-BHB), and neuropeptide Y (NPY). Autophagy, in turn, promotes the removal of abnormally deposited proteins and damaged organelles and improves cognitive function, ultimately prolonging lifespan. In addition, a diet restricted to the circadian rhythm induces increased expression of brainderived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the forebrain region, regulating autophagy and increasing synaptic plasticity, thus enhancing cognitive function. Consequently, circadian rhythm-restricted diets could serve as a promising non-pharmacological treatment for preventing and improving cognitive dysfunction and prolonging lifespan. Introduction: Tuina is currently one of the popular complementary and alternative methods of rehabilitation therapy. Tuina can improve patients' pain and mobility function. However, the underlying physiological mechanism remains largely unknown, which might limit its further popularization in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to explore the short‐term and long‐term changes in brain functional activity following Tuina intervention for peripheral nerve injury repair. Methods: A total of 16 rats were equally divided into the intervention group and the control group. Rats in the intervention group received Tuina therapy applying on the gastrocnemius muscle of the right side for 4 months following sciatic nerve transection and immediate repair, while the control group received nerve transection and repair only. The block‐design functional magnetic resonance imaging scan was applied in both groups at 1 and 4 months after the surgery. During the scan, both the injured and intact hindpaw was electrically stimulated according to a "boxcar" paradigm. Results: When stimulating the intact hindpaw, the intervention group exhibited significantly lower activation in the somatosensory area, limbic/paralimbic areas, pain‐regulation areas, and basal ganglia compared to the control group, with only the prefrontal area showing higher activation. After 4 months of sciatic nerve injury, the control group exhibited decreased motor cortex activity compared to the activity observed at 1 month, and the intervention group demonstrated stronger bilateral motor cortex activity compared to the control group. Conclusion: Tuina therapy on the gastrocnemius muscle of rats with sciatic nerve injury can effectively alleviate pain and maintain the motor function of the affected limb. In addition, Tuina therapy reduced the activation level of pain‐related brain regions and inhibited the decreased activity of the motor cortex caused by nerve injury, reflecting the impact of peripheral stimulation on brain plasticity. Purpose: To investigate the regulatory influence of Prok1 on apoptotic and proliferative changes in PCOS, and the implication of Pi3k/Akt/nf-κ B signaling pathway in the process. Methods: Ovarian granulosa cells from a rat model of PCOS were assigned to control and si-Prok1 groups, after cell culture. Then, control lentivirus and Prok1 siRNA lentivirus (50 µL each) were added to the cells to the groups, respectively. Cell cycle ratio and apoptosis in the two groups were determined using flow cytometry, while Pi3k/Akt signal route-linked protein levels were assayed by immunoblot method. Results: The proportions of cells at G0/G1 and S phases of the cell cycle in si-Prok1 group were significantly lower than those in the control group, but G2/M phase cell population was significantly higher, relative to the control (p < 0.01). There was significant down-regulation of protein expressions of cyclin A2 and cycline1 in si-Prok1 group, relative to control group, but p21 protein level was significantly higher in si-Prok1 group (p < 0.05). There was a significantly higher apoptosis in si-Prok1 group. In the si-Prok1 cells, there were significant increases in protein levels of Bcl-2, cleaved caspase-9 and caspase-3, relative to control group, while protein expression levels of Bax, p-Pi3k and p-Akt in si-Prok1 group were significantly lower than the corresponding control values (p < 0.05). Conclusion: si-Prok1 arrests cell cycle, induces apoptotic changes, and inhibits the proliferation of ovarian granulosa cells through a mechanism related to the regulation of Pi3k/Akt signaling pathway. Fine-grained lacustrine sedimentation controlled by astronomical cycles remains a research weakness in sedimentology studies, as most studies have concentrated on how astronomical cycles affect the normal lacustrine fine-grained sedimentation, but how they affect the lacustrine fine-grained event sedimentation has been rarely studied. Therefore, this work researched the characteristics of event sedimentation by systematically observing the cores from 30 cored wells in the Shahejie Formation of the Dongying Sag at a depth of over 1800 m, with more than 4000 thin sections being authenticated and over 1000 whole rocks being analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The research object was the Chunshang Sub-member of Upper Es4 in the Fanye 1 well, as it had the most comprehensive analysis data and underwent the most continuous coring. We divided astronomical cycles into different orders and made corresponding curves using the gamma-ray (GR) curve, spectral analysis, power spectrum estimation, and module extreme values, there were 6 long eccentricity periods, 22 short eccentricity periods, 65.5 obliquity cycles, and 110.5 precession cycles in this sub-member. On this basis, this study analyzed the control of astronomical cycles on the lacustrine fine-grained event sedimentation, and the research shows deposits were developed by slide-slump, turbidities, hyperpycnites, and tempestites in the Chunshang Sub-member of the Upper Es4, with higher long eccentricity, the monsoon climate contributes to the formation of storm currents, while with lower long eccentricity, the surface deposits are severely eroded by rivers and rainfalls, thus developing the slide-slump, turbidities, and hyperpycnites. The relationship between the lacustrine fine-grained event sedimentation and astronomical cycles was studied in this case study, which can promote research on fine-grained sedimentary rocks in genetic dynamics and boost the theoretical and disciplinary development in fine-grained sedimentology. Introduction: : Brain has a spontaneous recovery after stroke, reflecting the plasticity of the brain. Currently, TMS is used for studies of single-target brain region modulation, which lacks consideration of brain networks and functional connectivity. Cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (ccPAS) promotes recovery of motor function. Multisensory effects in primary visual cortex(V1) directly influence behavior and perception, which facilitate motor functional recovery in stroke patients. Therefore, in this study, dual-targeted precise stimulation of V1 and primary motor cortex(M1) on the affected hemisphere of stroke patients will be used for cortical visuomotor multisensory integration to improve motor function. Method: This study is a randomized, double-blind controlled clinical trial over a 14-week period. 69 stroke subjects will be enrolled and divided into sham stimulation group, ccPAS low frequency group, and ccPAS high frequency group. All groups will receive conventional rehabilitation. The intervention lasted for two weeks, five times a week. Assessments will be performed before the intervention, at the end of the intervention, and followed up at 6 and 14 weeks. The primary assessment indicator is the 'Fugl-Meyer Assessment of the Upper Extremity ', secondary outcomes were 'The line bisection test', 'Modified Taylor Complex Figure', 'NIHSS' and neuroimaging assessments. All adverse events will be recorded. Discussion: Currently, ccPAS is used for the modulation of neural circuits. Based on spike-timing dependent plasticity theory, we can precisely intervene in the connections between different cortices to promote the recovery of functional connectivity on damaged brain networks after stroke. We hope to achieve the modulation of cortical visuomotor interaction by combining ccPAS with the concept of multisensory integration. We will further analyze the correlation between analyzing visual and motor circuits and explore the alteration of neuroplasticity by the interactions between different brain networks. This study will provide us with a new clinical treatment strategy to achieve precise rehabilitation for patient with motor dysfunction after stroke. Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that HbA1c levels, a common clinical indicator of chronic glucose metabolism over the preceding 2–3 months, are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including heart failure. However, conflicting evidence obscures clear cutoffs of HbA1c levels in various heart failure populations. The aim of this review is to assess the possible predictive value and optimal range of HbA1c on mortality and readmission in patients with heart failure. Methods: A systematic and comprehensive search will be performed using PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases before December 2022 to identify relevant studies. All-cause mortality is the prespecified primary endpoint. Cardiovascular death and heart failure readmission are secondary endpoints of interest. We will only include prospective and retrospective cohort studies and place no restrictions on the language, race, region, or publication period. The ROBINS-I tool will be used to assess the quality of each included research. If there were sufficient studies, we will conduct a meta-analysis with pooled relative risks and corresponding 95% confidence intervals to evaluate the possible predictive value of HbA1c for mortality and readmission. Otherwise, we will undertake a narrative synthesis. Heterogeneity and publication bias will be assessed. If heterogeneity was significant among included studies, a sensitivity analysis or subgroup analysis will be used to explore the source of heterogeneity, such as diverse types of heart failure or patients with diabetes and non-diabetes. Additionally, we will conduct meta-regression to examine the time-effect and treatment-effect modifiers on all-cause mortality compared between different quantile of HbA1c levels. Finally, a restricted cubic spline model may be used to explore the dose-response relationship between HbA1c and adverse outcomes. Discussion: This planned analysis is anticipated to identify the predictive value of HbA1c for mortality and readmission in patients with heart failure. Improved understanding of different HbA1c levels and their specific effect on diverse types of heart failure or patients with diabetes and non-diabetes is expected to be figured out. This paper concerns the quasi-neutral limit to the Cauchy problem for a two-fluid Euler-Poisson system in several space dimensions. When the initial data are sufficiently close to constant equilibrium states, we prove the global existence of smooth solutions with uniform bounds with respect to the Debye length in Sobolev spaces. This allows us to pass to the limit in the system for all times to obtain a compressible Euler system. Background: Glioma is one of the most fatal types of malignant tumours, the cause of which is mostly unknown. Orphan GPCRs (GPRs) have been previously implicated in tumour growth and metastasis. Therefore, these GPRs could prove to be alternative and promising therapeutic targets for cancer treatment. Objective: The role of GPR160 in glioma has not yet been assessed. This study aims to explore the association of GPR160 with glioma progression and investigate its role in epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis. Methods: Changes in protein expression were assessed using western blot analysis and immunofluorescent staining assays, while mRNA expression changes were evaluated using qRT‐PCR. To detect the changes in progression and metastasis, MTT, EdU proliferation, wound healing, transwell migration, and flow cytometry assays were carried out in vitro. An epithelial to mesenchymal phenotypic analysis was performed to detect EMT. Results: We demonstrated that knockdown of GPR160 inhibited proliferation, colony formation, and cell viability and promoted apoptosis. Pro‐apoptotic biomarkers were upregulated, while anti‐apoptotic biomarkers were downregulated. Cell lines with GPR160 knockdown (GPR160 KD) showed a slowed migration rate and decreased invasion ability. EMT mesenchymal biomarkers were downregulated in GPR160 KD cell lines, while epithelial biomarkers were upregulated. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that GPR160 is a potential therapeutic target in glioma for the first time. Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) can lead to poor prognosis in patients undergoing liver transplantation or extensive liver resection. Maresin conjugate in tissue regeneration 1 (MCTR1) exerts a protective effect in several inflammatory disease models, but its role in HIRI remains unknown. In this study, we examined the effect of MCTR1 on HIRI and its underlying mechanism. HIRI mice and oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) AML12 cell models were used to evaluate the effects of MCTR1 at different doses on HIRI. Histological changes, inflammatory mediators, and ferroptosis-associated markers including iron content, oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, cell death marker (LDH), and the expression of Nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (NRF2) were analyzed. The results showed that MCTR1 treatment significantly ameliorated liver tissue damage and AST/ALT levels in HIRI mice. It also ameliorated ferroptosis in both HIRI mice and OGD/R AML12 cells, including a decrease in iron content, serum LDH release levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS), MDA, IL-1β levels, and COX2 and transferrin receptor (TFRC) expression. In addition, it increased the levels of IL-10, the antioxidant stress markers SOD and GSH, and the expression of GPX4. With respect to the underlying mechanism, the expression of NRF2 in HIRI mice and OGD/R AML12 cells was significantly inhibited. MCTR1 treatment restored the inhibition of NRF2 expression caused by ischemia-reperfusion, and NRF2 inhibitors significantly inhibited nuclear aggregation of NRF2 promoted by MCTR1. Simple Summary: In this cross-sectional study, the global incidence, death, and DALY rates of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) increased from 1990 to 2019, with large variations in the regional and national levels. A low-milk or low-calcium diet and alcohol use were the leading possible risk factors in 2019. The importance of high body mass index and high fasting plasma glucose increased among both males and females from 1990 to 2019, while the importance of smoking and a low-fiber diet decreased among both sexes, but especially among females. Methods: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019, we reported the incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) attributable to the risk factors of early-onset CRC. All estimates were reported with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). Results: The global numbers of early-onset CRC for incidence, deaths, and DALYs in 2019 were 225,736 (95% UI, 207,658 to 246,756), 86,545 (80,162 to 93,431), and 4,259,922 (3,942,849 to 4,590,979), respectively. Despite large variations at the regional and national levels, the global incidence rate, death rate, and DALY rate increased from 1990 to 2019. Introduction: Coronary artery calcification and cardiac abnormalities are common in hemodialysis patients. The value of lanthanum carbonate over calcium‐based phosphate binders in managing the progression of coronary artery calcification is debated. We reviewed all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the two strategies in these patients. Methods: RCTs comparing lanthanum carbonate with calcium‐based phosphate binders used in adult hemodialysis patients were identified in the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal, and Wanfang databases. Findings Ten RCTs involving 687 patients were suitable for inclusion. Compared with calcium‐based phosphate binders, lanthanum carbonate yielded lower coronary artery calcium scores (weighted mean difference, WMD: −74.28, 95% CI: −149.89, 1.33), change in coronary artery calcium scores (WMD: −105.18, 95% CI: −113.83, −96.53), and left ventricular mass index (WMD: −29.95, 95% CI: −54.25, −7.45). Lanthanum carbonate was significantly associated with lower levels of serum phosphate (WMD: −0.18, 95% CI: −0.26, −0.10), calcium (WMD: −0.22, 95% CI: −0.25, −0.20), and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) (standard mean difference: −3.78, 95% CI: −5.60, −1.96) but not intact parathyroid hormone (WMD: −4.23, 95% CI: −64.12, 55.65). Moreover, a reduced risk of nonfatal cardiovascular events (OR: 0.31, 95% CI: 0.10–0.97) but not all‐cause mortality (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 0.39–3.01) in lanthanum carbonate therapy was observed. In poultry, feed restriction is common feeding management to limit poultry nutrients intake so that poultry only intake the essential energy, meeting the basic need of growth and development. Our study investigated whether feeding restriction affects the diversity of the intestinal microbiota of growing breeding ducks. In this research, the 60–120-day-old ducks were raised in restricted and free-feeding groups. After slaughtering, the carcass traits and the cecal contents were collected for 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. After feeding restriction, the growth rate of ducks was limited, the weight and rate of abdominal fat decreased, and the rate of chest and leg muscles increased. In addition, feeding restriction can also change the diversity of intestinal microorganisms in breeding ducks, such as the increase of Firmicutes abundance and the decrease of Bacteroidetes abundance. After analyzing of correlation, significant correlations between gut microbiota and carcass phenotypes were found. The results indicated that gut microbiota might be involved in the life activities associated with phenotypic changes. This study proved the effect of feeding methods on the intestinal microbiota of ducks, providing a theoretical basis of the microbial angle for raising ducks in a feeding-restricted period. In recent years, machine learning models have achieved magnificent success in many industrial applications, but most of them are black boxes. It is crucial to understand why such predictions are made in many critical areas such as medicine, financial markets, and auto driving. In this paper, we propose Coco, a novel interpretation method which can interpret any binary classifier by assigning each feature an importance value for a particular prediction. We first adopt MixUp method to generate reasonable perturbations, then apply these perturbations with constraints to obtain counterfactual instances and finally compute a comprehensive metric on these instances to estimate the importance of each feature. To demonstrate the effectiveness of Coco, we conduct extensive experiments on several datasets. The results show our method achieves better performance in identifying the most important features compared with the state-of-the-art interpretation methods, including Shap and Lime. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible use of resveratrol (Res) to reverse abnormal osteogenesis/osteoclastogenesis activity that occurs during femoral head osteonecrosis and to explore the detailed mechanisms. Application of Res to bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells in vitro promoted survival, inhibited apoptosis, and downregulated expression of reactive oxygen species expression. Moreover, Res application was associated with elevated microRNA‐146a (miR‐146a) expression, osteogenic differentiation, and suppressed osteoclastic differentiation, which were markedly reversed by miR‐146a inhibitor. Histopathological observations and micro‐computed tomography scanning results indicated that the Res‐treated group had lower incidence of osteonecrosis and better bone microstructure than the untreated group. Res inhibited osteoclastogenesis through altering the levels of sirtuin1 (Sirt1), nuclear transcription factor‐κB (NF‐κB), and receptor activator of NF‐κB ligand (RANKL). Simultaneously, Res treatment improved bone formation and increased β‐catenin and runt‐related transcription factor 2 (Runt2) expression levels, while reducing forkhead box class O (FOXO) family protein levels. The results of our study suggest that Res prevents steroid‐induced osteonecrosis by upregulating miR‐146a, and thereby stabilizes osteogenesis/osteoclastogenesis homeostasis via Wnt/FOXO and Sirt1/NF‐κB pathways. Partial multi-label learning (PML) deals with the problem where each training example is associated with an overcomplete set of candidate labels, among which only some candidate labels are valid. The task of PML naturally arises in learning scenarios with inaccurate supervision, and the goal is to induce a multi-label predictor which can assign a set of proper labels for unseen instance. The PML training procedure is prone to be misled by false positive labels concealed in the candidate label set, which serves as the major modeling difficulty for partial multi-label learning. In this paper, a novel two-stage PML approach is proposed which works by eliciting credible labels from the candidate label set for model induction. In the first stage, the labeling confidence of candidate label for each PML training example is estimated via iterative label propagation. In the second stage, by utilizing credible labels with high labeling confidence, multi-label predictor is induced via pairwise label ranking coupled with virtual label splitting or maximum a posteriori (MAP) reasoning. Experimental studies show that the proposed approach can achieve highly competitive generalization performance by excluding most false positive labels from the training procedure via credible label elicitation. Cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) is an essential regulator of immune cell functionality, but the mechanisms whereby it drives immune infiltration in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. In the present study, we studied the association with CDKN2A expression and immune invasion with the risk of developing HCC. A totally of 2207 different genes were found between HCC and adjacent liver tissues from TCGA and GEO databases. CDKN2A was highly expressed in HCC and associated with poorer overall survival and disease-free survival. Notably, CDKN2A expression was positively correlated with infiltrating levels into purity, B cell, CD+8 T cell, CD+4 T cell, macrophage, neutrophil, and dendritic cells in HCC. CDKN2A expression showed strong correlations between diverse immune marker sets in HCC. These findings suggest that CDKN2A expression potentially contributes to regulation of tumor-associated macrophages and can be used as a prognostic biomarker for determining prognosis and immune infiltration in HCC. Visual working memory (VWM) content disrupts visual search performance when there is a singleton in the search array that is similar to the content in VWM, even when this singleton is task irrelevant. Typically, the memory-similar singleton captures attention, which results in slower search performance for memory-similar conditions compared to conditions where memory-similar content is absent. Recently, it has also been shown that VWM content may be affected when memory-similar stimuli are processed. Specifically, it appears that VWM representations bias toward memory-similar information that is processed but not memory-dissimilar information. Here, we test whether the bias caused by processing memory-similar information is an active interference process (growing with engagement with the memory-similar stimuli) or a passive interference process (indifferent to the engagement with memory-similar stimuli). To test this, observers were tasked with memorizing a single color followed by a search task. The search task was either easy or difficult, and the search items could either be memory-similar or memory-dissimilar. Critically, the target in the search task was defined by its shape, so the color of the search items was irrelevant to the search task. At the end of each trial, participants reported the color in memory using a continuous report color wheel. The results showed that VWM representations drifted towards the irrelevant color of the search items in the memory-similar conditions, and this effect was larger in the difficult search condition. In industrial production, the pollution level of industrial smoke and dust is often judged based on Ringelmann scale. An effective method is to monitor the industrial smoke using computer vision system. The accurate segmentation of smoke targets is the key to this system. Since the shape of industrial smoke is variable and similar to cloud, the existing algorithms do not work well in complex scenes, so the accuracy of segmentation needs to be improved. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes an industrial smoke image segmentation method based on FCN-LSTM. On the basis of using fully convolutional network (FCN) to extract spatial features of the image, the time information of the image sequence is extracted by long short-term memory network (LSTM). The dynamic features of smoke and dust are used to distinguish the moving smoke and background, so as to enhance the anti-interference ability in complex scenes. Experiments show that, compared with the FCN, the proposed model can significantly improve the anti-interference ability in complex scenes. The model can effectively overcome the interference from the cloud, and solve the problem of interference points in the segmentation results of FCN. The indicator is increased by up to 8. 04%. Primary intracranial gliosarcoma is a rare malignant brain tumour, and the most effective treatment for gliosarcoma remains unclear. This study aimed to identify risk factors for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in these cases. This retrospective single-centre study evaluated 103 patients (median age, 51 years; 67 men [65%]) with primary intracranial gliosarcoma between 2006 and 2017. Treatments included surgery (GTR, 63 patients; STR, 39 patients; biopsy, 1 patient), radiotherapy (adjuvant, 76 patients; exclusive treatment, 1 patient), and chemotherapy (adjuvant temozolomide, 52 patients; adjuvant nimustine/teniposide, 19 patients; adjuvant bevacizumab, 1 patient; exclusive nimustine/teniposide treatment, 1 patient). The median OS was 13.3 months, and the median PFS was 9.1 months. In the multivariate analyses, the poor prognostic factors were ependymal lining enhancement of the lateral ventricle (PFS, HR 2.406, p = 0.005; OS, HR 2.946, p = 0.009) and enhancement in the motor functional cortex (PFS, HR 2.892, p = 0.002; OS, HR 2.639, p = 0.009). Good OS was predicted by adjuvant radiotherapy alone (HR 0.071, p < 0.001), adjuvant temozolomide-based chemotherapy alone (HR 0.063, p = 0.005), adjuvant temozolomide-based chemotherapy with concurrent radiotherapy (HR 0.056, p < 0.001), and salvage surgery at recurrence (HR 0.449, p = 0.031). The present study revealed that, in patients with primary intracranial gliosarcoma, enhancement in the functional motor cortex and ependymal lining enhancement of the lateral ventricle were both poor prognostic factors. Survival was optimized in cases treated using maximal safe resection followed by adjuvant temozolomide-based chemotherapy with concurrent radiotherapy. During the damage and defects related to rolling contact fatigue (RCF), together with wear occurring at the rail surface, the microscopic characteristics of the rail material change with the accumulation of wheel cycles. To find the relationship between rail material characteristics and RCF damage under wheel-rail contact situations, a series of twin-disc rolling-sliding tests, based on real wheel-rail contact situations at a radius of 80 mm rail profile, was established for a heavy-haul railway in China. The microscale characteristics of the rail disc contact surface was researched, including crack, wear, roughness, and hardness of the U75V rail with different load cycles. The results show that the damage mechanism of RCF and wear alternately dominates the rail disc surface at the microscale, taking a certain cycle as a boundary which makes the RCF crack number and wear rate have opposite evolutionary trends. The above factors also affect the wear at the surface rail discs, alternating between fatigue and adhesion. Meanwhile, increasing the surface micro-hardness leads to a decrease in the relative wear rate and an increase in the roughness, length and number of RCF cracks. The plastic deformation layers, including the severely deformed layer (SDL) and the transition layer (TL), almost maintain the same thickness and the dynamic equilibrium increases during the cycles. Two kinds of cracks are initiated and propagated at the rail disc surface, one at the SDL and the other at the junction of SDL and TL. Developing and synthesizing the economical electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for the large-scale production of hydrogen source. Although NiCoS-based electrocatalysts have attracted great attention, deep insight into the mechanism of boosted HER activities still needs to be further investigated, especially based on the doped Ni-based electrocatalyst. Herein, we synthesized the cobalt and sulfur co-doped nickel electrocatalysts (NCS) and the HER performance is evaluated in alkaline medium. The results show that the NCS with optimized component has a boosted HER activity compared to Ni, NiCo, and NiS, which exhibits the lower overpotential of 45.8 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 and Tafel slope of 83.4 mV·dec-1. The co-introduced Co and S are conductive to increase the reactive sites, charge transfer capacity and aerophobic property. The theoretical calculation results reveal that the doped S can induce electron localization at the Ni and Co atoms bonded to S atom. Moreover, we also confirm that the Co sites and Ni sites of NCS represent the reactive sites in the Volmer and Heyrovsky steps, respectively, and thereby boosting the hydrogen evolution activity. Axial structural damping behavior induced by internal friction and viscoelastic properties of polymeric layers may have an inevitable influence on the global analysis of flexible pipes. In order to characterize this phenomenon and axial mechanical responses, a full-scale axial tensile experiment on a complex flexible pipe is conducted at room temperature, in which oscillation forces at different frequencies are applied on the sample. The parameters to be identified are axial strains which are measured by three kinds of instrumentations: linear variable differential transformer, strain gauge and camera united particle-tracking technology. The corresponding plots of axial force versus axial elongation exhibit obvious nonlinear hysteretic relationship. Consequently, the loss factor related to the axial structural damping behavior is found, which increases as the oscillation loading frequency grows. The axial strains from the three measurement systems in the mechanical experiment indicate good agreement, as well as the values of the equivalent axial stiffness. The damping generated by polymeric layers is relatively smaller than that caused by friction forces. Therefore, it can be concluded that friction forces maybe dominate the axial structural damping, especially on the conditions of high frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In clinical practice, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 are the most common markers measured before and after surgery for gastric cancer (GC). However, which pre- or post-operative combined tumour markers (CEA and CA19-9) have more prognostic value remains unclear.Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing a resection for GC at the Fujian Medical University Union Hospital were included as a discovery database between January 2011 and December 2014. The prognostic impact of pre- and post-operative tumour markers was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier log-rank survival analysis and multivariable Cox regression analysis. The results were then externally validated.Results: A total of 735 and 400 patients were identified in the discovery cohort and in the validation cohort, respectively. Overall survival rates decreased in a stepwise manner in association with the number of pre- and post-operative positive tumour markers (both P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis revealed that the number of pre-operative positive tumour markers was an independent prognostic factor (P < 0.05). For patients with abnormal pre-operative tumour markers, normalisation of tumour markers after surgery is an independent prognostic protective factor (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.618; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.414-0.921), and patients with both positive post-operative tumour markers had double the risk of overall death (HR = 2.338; 95% CI = 1.071-5.101). Similar results were observed in the internal validation and external validation cohorts.Conclusion: Pre-operative tumour markers have a better discriminatory ability for post-operative survival in GC patients than post-operative tumour markers, and the normalisation of tumour markers after surgery was associated with better survival. Purpose: To investigate the correlation between number of retrieved lymph nodes (rLNs) and prognosis and further ascertain the optimal number of rLNs with a beneficial survival impact in patients with pN0 colon cancer. Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was searched for pN0 colon cancer cases. X-Tile software and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis were applied to determine the optimal number of rLNs based on the minimal probability (P) value and the largest χ2 value. Univariate analyses and Cox proportional hazard regression model were used to investigate the relationship between rLN number and overall survival. Multiple analyses were conducted to assess the prognostic predictive ability of the identified optimal rLN cut-off value under different stratifications. Nomograms were established based on the independent prognostic factors selected by the multivariate analysis to predict 3- and 5-year overall survival rates of pN0 patients. Results: A total of 6269 pN0 colon cancer patients who underwent surgical therapy were finally included for analysis. Harvest of at least 18 lymph nodes was determined as the optimal rLN number. This cut-off rLN value (< 18 versus ≥ 18) was identified as an independent prognostic factor (P < 0.001) of overall survival via multivariate analysis. Similar findings were obtained in patients with retrieval of at least 12 lymph nodes (18 > rLNs ≥ 12 versus rLNs ≥ 18) stratified into several groups. Conclusions: The number of rLNs was identified as an independent prognostic factor for pN0 colon cancer. Retrieval of at least 18 lymph nodes was associated with favorable prognosis in patients with pN0 colon cancer, and should, therefore, be regarded as an alternative cut-off value for survival analysis. High strength-ductility is the prerequisite requirement for the widely used steel wires in engineering applications. Traditional strengthening strategies on these wires are suffocated inevitably by strength-ductility trade-off dilemma. Recent emerging medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) usually exhibits excellent ductility but relatively lower strength. In this paper, a novel CoCrNi MEA wire with superior mechanical properties was successfully fabricated by heavily drawing process. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation could reach 1.5 GPa, 1.8 GPa and 37.4% at liquid-nitrogen temperature, respectively. In-depth microstructure characterization indicates this superior strength-ductility derives from the synergy of dislocations, high-density twins and clear FCC-HCP phase transition. Ultrasound/microwave assisted extraction (UMAE) of flavonoid compounds from Eucommia ulmoides leaves was studied and the extraction conditions were optimized by the Plackett-Burman design (PBD) method combined with the Box-Behnken design (BBD). The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the flavonoid extract were investigated. The results show that the optimal conditions were an ethanol concentration of 41%, microwave power of 178 W and an ultra-sound extraction time of 26 min. Under these conditions, the yield of the flavonoid compounds was 2.454%±0.230%, which was higher than that after direct solvent extraction, ultrasound extraction and microwave extraction. The results of in vitro antioxidant assays showed that the flavonoid extract had scavenging capacity for DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl radicals, with corresponding IC50 values of 30.76 mg/L, 21.09 mg/L, 248.4 mg/L, respectively. Camouflage and wound healing are two vital functions for cephalopods to survive from dangerous ocean risks. Inspired by these dual functions, herein, we report a new type of healable mechanochromic (HMC) material. The bifunctional HMC material consists of two tightly bonded layers. One layer is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) for shielding. Another layer contains supramolecular hydrogen bonding polymers and fluorochromes for healing. The as‐synthesized HMC material exhibits a tunable and reversible mechanochromic function due to the strain‐induced surface structure of composite film. The mechanochromic function can be further restored after damage because of the incorporated healable polyurethane. The healing efficiency of the damaged HMC materials can even reach 98 % at 60 °C for 6 h. Brassinosteroids (BRs) and jasmonates (JAs) regulate plant growth, development, and defense responses, but how these phytohormones mediate the growth-defense tradeoff is unclear. Here, we identified the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) dwarf at early stages1 (dwe1) mutant, which exhibits enhanced expression of defensin genes PLANT DEFENSIN1.2a (PDF1.2a) and PDF1.2b. The dwe1 mutant showed increased resistance to herbivory by beet armyworms (Spodoptera exigua) and infection by botrytis (Botrytis cinerea). DWE1 encodes ROTUNDIFOLIA3, a cytochrome P450 protein essential for BR biosynthesis. The JA-inducible transcription of PDF1.2a and PDF1.2b was significantly reduced in the BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1-ETHYL METHANESULFONATE-SUPPRESSOR1 (BES1) gain-of-function mutant bes1- D, which was highly susceptible to S. exigua and B. cinerea. BES1 directly targeted the terminator regions of PDF1.2a/PDF1.2b and suppressed their expression. PDF1.2a overexpression diminished the enhanced susceptibility of bes1- D to B. cinerea but did not improve resistance of bes1- D to S. exigua. In response to S. exigua herbivory, BES1 inhibited biosynthesis of the JA-induced insect defense-related metabolite indolic glucosinolate by interacting with transcription factors MYB DOMAIN PROTEIN34 (MYB34), MYB51, and MYB122 and suppressing expression of genes encoding CYTOCHROME P450 FAMILY79 SUBFAMILY B POLYPEPTIDE3 (CYP79B3) and UDP-GLUCOSYL TRANSFERASE 74B1 (UGT74B1). Background: We sought to investigate the prognostic value of complete blood count (CBC)-based biomarkers for patients with resectable gastric cancer (GC).Methods: Patients with GC who underwent primary surgical resection between December 2008 and December 2013 were included. The estimated area under the curve (AUC) and multivariate Cox regression models were used to identify the best CBC-based biomarker. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (t-ROC) curve analysis was used to predict overall survival and compare the prognostic impact.Results: In the 1810 patients analyzed, the median follow-up period was 51.0 months (range 1-101 months). Based on multivariate analysis, the lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) and hemoglobin (Hb) level were independent prognostic factors (both P < 0.05). Based on the LMR and Hb level, we established the CBC-based inflammatory score (CBCS). A higher CBCS was associated with older age, female sex, higher American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, proximal tumor location, larger tumor size, later stage and vascular involvement (all P < 0.05). Univariate analyses showed that a higher CBCS was also associated with worse overall survival (OS), which was consistent in each stage (all P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that the CBCS was a significant independent biomarker (P < 0.05). The AUC for the CBCS (0.627) was significantly higher than the AUCs for the LMR (0.573) and Hb level (0.605) (both P < 0.05). Furthermore, the t-ROC curve of the CBCS was superior to that of the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) and C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CRP/Alb) throughout the observation period.Conclusion: The preoperative LMR and Hb level were optimal CBC-based biomarkers for predicting OS in GC patients after curative resection. Highly potent ionic organocatalyst is developed for room-temperature controlled ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones, including δ-valerolactone, ε-caprolactone, and δ-hexalactone. The catalysts are prepared by simply mixing tetra-n-butyl ammonium hydroxide and a (thio)urea at elevated temperature under vacuum, and used in cooperation with an alcoholic initiator. The performance of the catalyst is readily adjusted and optimized through variation of the (thio)urea precursor, catalyst composition, and reaction condition. Urea-derived catalysts are generally superior to thiourea-derived ones. Provided with proper N-substituents, the catalyst affords both high polymerization efficiency and high selectivity for monomer enchainment over macromolecular transesterification, even at high monomer conversion and/or substantially extended reaction time. In addition to acidity, structural symmetry of the urea also proves decisive for the catalytic activity, which enables a catalyst-assisted proton transfer process for the ring-opening of lactone and thus provides a novel mechanistic insight for ROP catalyzed by hydrogen-bonding type bifunctional ionic organocatalysts. Aberrant DNA methylation patterns are common in cancers and environmental pollutant exposed subjects. Up to date, few studies have examined the aberrant DNA methylation patterns in benzene exposed workers. We recruited 141 benzene-exposed workers, including 83 benzene-exposed workers from a shoe factory in Wenzhou and 58 workers from a painting workshop in Wuhu, 35 workers in Wuhu were followed from 2009 to 2013, and 48 indoor workers as controls from Wenzhou. We used high-resolution melting (HRM) to quantitate human samples of DNA methylation in long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1), (6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), and DNA mismatch repair gene human mutator L homologue 1 (hMLH1). AML-5 cells were treated with benzoquinone (BQ) and hydroquinone (HQ), and the promoter methylation of MGMT and hMLH1 was detected using the bisulfite sequencing PCR method. The degree of LINE-1 methylation in benzene-exposed workers was significantly lower than that of the controls (p<0.001), and the degree of MGMT (p<0.001) and hMLH1 (p = 0.01) methylation was significantly higher than that of the controls. The in vitro study validated the aberrant hypermethylation of hMLH1 after treatment with BQ. Among the cohort workers who were followed from 2009 to 2013, the LINE1 methylation elevated in 2013 than 2009 (p = 0.004), and premotor methylation in hMLH1 reduced in 2013 than 2009 (p = 0.045) with the reduction of the benzene exposure. Background: Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) is a major active component of yellow pigment extracted from safflowers; this compound possesses potent neuroprotective effects both in vitro and in vivo. However, underlying mechanism of HSYA is not fully elucidated. The present study investigated the protective effects of HSYA in rat spinal cord compression injury model and related mechanisms involved.Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided as Sham, Control, and HSYA groups (n = 30 per group). Spinal cord injury (SCI) model was induced by application of vascular clips (force of 50 g, 1 min) to the dura at T9-T10 level of vertebra. Injured animals were administered with either HSYA (8 mg/kg at 1 and 6 h after injury, then 14 mg/kg, for a total of 7 days at 24-h time intervals) or equal volume of saline by intraperitoneal injection.Results: From this experiment, we discovered that SCI in rats resulted in severe trauma, which is characterized by tissue damage, lipid peroxidation, neutrophil infiltration, inflammation mediator release, and neuronal apoptosis. However, HSYA treatment significantly reduced the following: (1) degree of tissue injury (histological score) and edema; (2) neutrophil infiltration (myeloperoxidase activity); (3) oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, and nitric oxide); (4) pro-inflammatory cytokine expression (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2); (5) nuclear factor-κB activation; (6) apoptosis (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining and cysteine-aspartic protease-3 activity). Moreover, in a separate set of experiments, we clearly demonstrated that HSYA treatment significantly ameliorated recovery of limb function (as evaluated by Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan behavioral recovery scores).Conclusions: Treatment with HSYA restrains development of oxidative stress, inflammation response, and apoptotic events associated with SCI of rats, demonstrating that HSYA is a potential neuroprotectant for human SCI therapy. When the spatial configuration of a search display is presented repeatedly, response times to finding the target within that configuration are shorter compared to completely novel configurations, even though observers do not have explicit recognition of the repetition. This phenomenon is known as Contextual Cueing and selective attention is thought to be necessary for the effect. Previous research has suggested that repetition of the context of unattended items does not appear to improve performance; only repetition of attended items does. It has been proposed that this occurs because unattended items are pre-attentively filtered and thus do not contribute to performance. Here we demonstrate that so-called "unattended" items do contribute to performance, just not to contextual cueing. We approach this question from the perspective of the parallel processing of the scene that unfolds at the start of each item and that has been recently modelled by the Target Contrast Signal Theory. We show that the processing time per item during parallel evaluation of the scene is not affected by context repetition, suggesting that the locations of the items rejected in this stage are not integrated into the memory representation underlying contextual cueing. Background: The systemic inflammation score (SIS), based on preoperative serum albumin (Alb) level and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), has been shown to be a novel prognostic score for some tumors. We investigate the prognostic value of the SIS in patients with resectable gastric cancer (GC).Methods: Patients with GC who underwent curative resection between December 2008 and December 2013 were included. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristics analysis (t-ROC), concordance index (C-index) and AUC were used to compare the prognostic impact.Results: Totally, 1786 patients with resectable GC were included in the study. By multivariate analysis, the SIS was not an independent prognostic factor. However, the normal Alb level (≥ 40 g/l) and LMR ≥ 3.4 both remained independent protective factors for GC (both P < 0.05). Due to the similar survival of patients with LMR ≥ 3.4 and LMR < 3.4 in the normal Alb group, we combined the two subgroups to establish the modified SIS (mSIS). Multivariate analysis revealed that the mSIS was the only significant independent biomarker (P < 0.05). The t-ROC curve and C-index for the mSIS were superior to those of the SIS throughout the observation period. Furthermore, the AUC of the mSIS was significantly greater than that of the SIS at 3 and 5 years after operation (both P < 0.05).Conclusion: The preoperative mSIS is a novel, simple and useful prognostic factor for postoperative survival in patients with GC and can be used as a part of the preoperative risk stratification process to improve the prediction of clinical outcomes. The impact of retrieval practice on analogical-problem-solving performance was investigated using a complex, educationally relevant task. Participants studied a statistical hypothesis testing scenario and practiced recalling the material or repeatedly studied it. Participants then completed a final test either 5 minutes or 1 week later involving a novel hypothesis-testing scenario that shared an intermediate procedural strategy and superficial and structural similarity with the study scenario but that differed at a specific procedure level. When the final test was given after 5 minutes, no differences in performance were observed across conditions (d = 0.01). Crucially, on the delayed test, retrieval practice produced superior performance than did repeated studying (d = 0.81), whereby participants were better at applying learned knowledge to solve a novel problem.
