Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is often manufactured as pipe, film and foam products and used as electric insulation material. To improve the dielectric properties of XLPE film, CF4 dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is applied as a surface modification method. The surface of XLPE film was modified at the low pressure of 1 kPa with different treatment time (15s, 30s, 60s, 120s, 240s and 480s). Electrical and optical characteristics are observed during DBD process, including applied voltage, measured current, photograph and emission spectra. Then, the surface properties, which are hydrophobicity, chemical composition, surface morphology, trap depth, dielectric loss and AC breakdown voltage, have been measured or observed by water contact angle test, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), isothermal relaxation current (IRC), frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) and withstand voltage test. After the surface modification, the water contact angle, trap depth and breakdown voltage increase first and then decrease with treatment time extending. Meanwhile, the dielectric loss has an opposite trend, which represents better dielectric properties. The reason is that fluorine can reduce the surface energy, which can significantly influence the water contact angle. Better hydrophobicity can restrain the accumulation of outside pollution on the surface. Moreover, fluorine has strong electronegativity, so amorphous crystalline and impurities interface trap depth become deeper and the dielectric loss becomes lower. Therefore, appropriate DBD treatment conditions can apparently improve XLPE dielectric properties.

Dielectric response is closely related to the aging status of XLPE cables, and the isothermal relaxation current (IRC) has been applied to find out the change trend of cable insulation as a non-destructive method. In this paper, 4 groups of XLPE cable samples (16 cables in total) are artificially acceleratedly aged with different time interval at 120, 140 and 160°C, respectively, and their IRC curves are measured by a micro-current device. The results show that with the increasing aging time, IRC curves decrease slower and the absolute values of steady current become larger. In order to quantify the aging characteristics of XLPE cables, the trap parameters calculation theory is employed to work out the peak trap level of different polarization types. The experiment results show that the peak trap level of bulk polarization (type 1) remains stable and is around 0.76eV which is considered to be independent of aging degree. As the aging time increases, the peak trap level of amorphous crystalline relaxation (type 2), which is from 0.785eV to 0.82eV, increases at low temperature (120°C) due to the breaking of molecular chain and decreases at high temperature (more than 140°C) due to the over cross-linking. The peak trap level of impurities interface relaxation (type 3) is highly influenced by aging temperature, which is most sensitive to the aging degree of power cable. It is considered that IRC can be used as a practical way to judge cable insulation in the future.

Partial discharge (PD) is the symptom of insulation breakdown in power equipment. The high rising steepness of PD current radiates electromagnetic waves which can be coupled with antenna. In this study, an antenna array is applied to PD detection and localisation in air-insulated substations, in which the locations of PD sources are found with time difference of arrival localisation algorithm. The influences of antenna deployment including the size, aspect ratio and shape of antenna array on localisation accuracy are systematically investigated. Three approaches including Cramér–Rao lower bound, numerical simulation of root of mean square error and experiments are adopted to evaluate the localisation accuracy. Three kinds of antenna arrays with diamond, rectangle and Y shapes are designed for locating the coordinates of PD sources. Their localisation performances are compared by these evaluation approaches, and the optimum antenna configurations for coordinate estimation are derived. The results indicate that the optimum array is dependent on aspect ratio of array size. If the aspect ratio is higher than 0.5, the rectangle array gives minimum localisation error and wide bearing ranges with low error. For array with aspect ratio smaller than 0.25, the diamond array is optimum among the three shapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultra-high-frequency (UHF) method is regarded as an effective approach for partial discharge (PD) detection in gas insulated substation (GIS). The feature parameters representing UHF signal characteristics can be extracted from its waveform, and applied to PD source classification and mixed signals separation. In this study, an UHF signal feature extraction algorithm based on cumulative energy (CE) technique is proposed. The CE functions in time domain (TCE) and frequency domain (FCE) are calculated from UHF waveforms and their fast Fourier transform spectrums, respectively. The mathematical morphology gradient (MMG) operation is applied to TCE and FCE to characterise their rising behavior. The feature parameters including width, area and sharpness are extracted from CEs and MMGs in both time and frequency domain. Moreover, the extracted features are applied to UHF signals classification and mixed signals separation. First, experiments on four kinds of typical defects in a 252 kV GIS are performed, and the classification performance of the extracted features is examined with the acquired signals. Second, by clustering the extracted features with fuzzy maximum-likelihood algorithm, mixed UHF signals originated from multiple PD sources are successfully separated. Surface charge accumulation on insulators becomes an important bottleneck to restrain the development of a DC energy transmission system. This study investigates the effects of SiC/epoxy coating on surface charge behaviors and flashover performance of alumina/epoxy spacers. A nonlinear conductive coating consisting of different contents of SiC fillers and epoxy matrix was fabricated and sprayed on only half surface of the spacers. The dependence of surface charges on the contents of SiC fillers is characterized by three stages. Surface charge accumulation is aggravated at deterioration stage, then almost unaltered at balance stage and inhibited at suppression stage. These three stages are determined by the competition between the increased surface trap density from interface region and the improved surface conductivity from SiC fillers. The variation trend of flashover in air and SF6/N2 mixtures is distinguished by three stages as well. Flashover voltage decreases at descent stage where deficient contents of SiC fillers are appended and then goes up at improved stage with moderate supply of SiC fillers. Finally, it ends up with drastically collapse at degenerated stage when affluent SiC fillers are brought in. The theoretical analysis is proposed based on surface trap distribution and conductivity measurement results to reveal the regulation mechanism of SiC/epoxy coating on surface charge behavior and flashover performance.
