Proceratophrys redacta Teixeira Jr, Amaro, Recoder, Vechio & Rodrigues, 2012 is a dwarf species of Proceratophrys characterized by its small size and by the presence of a row of small round tubercles on the eyelids (Teixeira Jr et al. 2012). This species is only known from the type locality and surroundings of the municipality of Morro do Chap��u (state of Bahia, Brazil) and inhabits areas of montane forests and adjacent open mesic areas (Teixeira Jr et al. 2012). To date, natural history data on P. redacta remain limited to that provided in its original description (see Texeira Jr et al. 2012), and its advertisement call remains undescribed. Here, for the first time, we describe the advertisement call of P. redacta, using sound recordings obtained ca. 25 airline km northwards from the species type locality, in the same mountain range. Furthermore, we compare the advertisement call of P. redacta with calls available in the literature for congeners. We recorded four calling males of P. redacta for at least five minutes using a Rodes NTG-2 directional microphone coupled to a Tascam DR-40 digital recorder on February 3, 2018. The microphone was 1 m from the recorded individual, and the recordings were built in an uncompressed wav format with a 24-bit resolution and a sampling rate of 44,100 Hz. After all the recordings, we measured the air temperature and air humidity using a Minipa MT-241 thermohygrometer (precision: 1��C and 10%). We collected individuals after the recordings and measured their snout-vent length (SVL) and body mass using an LEE tools analog caliper (0.02 mm of precision) and a digital pocket scale (0.01 g of precision), respectively. The collected individuals were identified by comparisons with the diagnose presented in Texeira Jr et al. (2012). The specimens are housed at the Museu de Hist��ria Natural da Universidade Federal da Bahia (MHNBA, vouchers numbers: UFBA 15771���15774), and the sound recordings are housed at the MHNBA���s Amphibian Sounds Library (SUFBA, voucher numbers: SUFBA 401���404). Preceding the acoustic analysis, we edited the recordings through a high pass filter of -18 dB at 150 Hz on Audacity software (Audacity Team 2017) and normalized the recordings in R software (R Core Team 2018) using the seewave package (Sueur et al. 2008). We analyzed the acoustic parameters of the advertisement calls with R software (R Core Team 2018) using warbleR (Araya-Salas & Smith-Vidaurre 2017), tuneR (Ligges et al. 2018) and seewave (Sueur et al. 2008) packages. Spectrograms were built in an Asus notebook with an Intel I5 processor using Hanning window, a fast Fourier transform window width of 256, overlap of 80%, and a dynamic range of -40���0 dB. We measured temporal parameters directly on the oscillogram, while spectral parameters were measured on the power spectrum. Our terminology followed the ���note centered��� approach described by K��hler et al. (2017). We measured call duration (s), call emissions rate (calls/s), number of notes per call, number of pulses per call, pulse emissions rate (pulses/s; calculated by [pulse number - 1]/time interval (s) between the beginning of the first pulse and the beginning of the last pulse), and dominant frequency (Hz). The measured parameters followed those in Nascimento et al. (2019). The description was compared with all other published call descriptions for the Proceratophrys genus (available at Ferreira et al. 2016; Andrade et al. 2018; M��ngia et al. 2018; Nascimento et al. 2019). Data are presented as the mean �� standard deviation (minimum���maximum). We observed P. redacta individuals calling on two nights after sunset (approximately 5: 40 p. m.). On January 27, only one individual was calling (recording was not useful), and on February 3, after a rainy day, we observed at least five individuals (only four recorded) calling near a water spring (11��22���07���S, 41��15���12���W, datum WGS84, 1,128 m a.s.l.) in the Parque Estadual Morro do Chap��u, municipality of Morro do Chap��u, state of Bahia, Brazil. The recorded individuals were close to the near calling male at approximately 0.7 to 1.8 m. They were vocalizing on leaf litter between ferns (UFBA 15771), on mud (UFBA 15772, UFBA 15774), and on moist moss (UFBA 15773). On February 3, we measured the air humidity at 87���89% and the air temperature at 19.5���20.1��C. We analyzed 61 calls from four individuals (12 calls from UFBA 15771, 10 from UFBA 15772, 13 from UFBA 15773, and 26 from UFBA 15774). The advertisement call of P. redacta is composed of one amplitude-modulated pulsionated note. The majority of the analyzed calls (62%) started with a rising modulation amplitude, and at approximately the middle portion of the call, they presented a maximum amplitude followed by a decreasing amplitude modulation until the end of the call (fig. 1D). The advertisement call of P. redacta can be characterized by the following: duration=0.57 �� 0.14 s (0.15��� 0.85 s); call rate=0.22 �� 0.23 calls/s (0.01���1.04 calls/s); number of pulses=51.02 �� 12.35 (13���74); pulse rate=89.86 �� 2.93 pulses/s (84.85���106.79 pulses/s); and dominant frequency=1,926 �� 145 Hz (1,658 ���2,142 Hz). The waveform, power spectrum and spectrogram of the call are shown in fig. 1, and the call parameters are detailed in table 1. Proceratophrys redacta calls can be easily distinguished from almost all congeners by their higher value of dominant frequency (P. redacta: 1,658 ���2,142 Hz; combined dominant frequencies of congeners: 200���1,590 Hz). Proceratophrys species whose dominant frequency overlaps with P. redacta are P. avelinoi Mercadal de Barrio & Barrio; P. minuta Napoli, Cruz, Abreu, and Del Grande; and P. schirchi (Miranda-Ribeiro). In relation to P. avelinoi (call described by Kwet & Baldo 2003) and P. minuta (call described by Nascimento et al. 2019), the P. redacta call is distinguished by its high pulse emissions rate (P. redacta =84.85���106.79 pulses/s; P. avelinoi =64���72 pulses/s; and P. minuta =66.8���73.8 pulses/s). Comparisons between P. redacta and P. schirchi (call parameters presented by Nascimento et al. 2019) demonstrated overlap for all measured parameters. Despite the overlap in dominant frequency and pulse emissions rate, overlap occurs only for the extreme values. The higher values of the P. schirchi dominant frequency (1,640 ���1,810 Hz) and pulse emissions rate (76.6���85.0 pulses/s) overlap with the lower values of the P. redacta dominant frequency (1,658 ���2,142 Hz) and pulse emissions rate (84.85���106.79 pulses/s). Nevertheless, these two species can be morphologically distinguished from each other (see Teixeira-Jr et al. 2012 for morphological comparisons). Two of the parameters that mainly distinguish the P. redacta advertisement call from that of its congeners (dominant frequency and pulse emissions rate) are recommended for use in taxonomy and are very important for mate recognition in anuran species (K��hler et al. 2017). Therefore, despite our results showing a small overlap between P. redacta and other Proceratophrys species, differences in dominant frequency and pulse emissions rates seem to be sufficient to allow distinguishing species vocally and can be usefull on taxonomy of the genus., Published as part of Sim��es, C��ssio Rachid M. Although tadpoles are common, frequently encountered vertebrates, their natural history is poorly known. Despite the fact that Brazil harbors the highest anuran diversity in the world, with almost a thousand known species (Segalla et al., 2014), the larvae of many species remain undescribed. The problem is not unique to Brazil. At the turn of the century, approximately ⅔ of almost 3,300 anuran species with a larval stage lacked tadpole descriptions (McDiarmid & Altig, 1999). Haddadus aramunha (Cassimiro, Verdade & Rodrigues, 2008), new comb. Diagnosis. To date, there is no identifiable morphological synapomorphy supporting the monophyly of the genus Haddadus (see discussion). We assign H. aramunha to this genus based on inferred relationships using molecular data, as well as on the overall similarity among males of S. aramunha and H. binotatus. Also, head width (HW)/ snout-vent length (SVL) lower than 49 % is a characteristic distinguishing members of Haddadus from Strabomantis (Cassimiro et al. 2008) (up to 54 % in Strabomantis, Hedges et al. 2008). Haddadus aramunha is characterized by the following combination of traits: (1) largest size for the genus (adult males SVL 37.3–44.9 mm, adult females SVL 51.0– 81.9 mm; Napoli et al. 2010); (2) wide head (HW/SVL 0.40–0.49; HL/SVL 0.37–0.45), its width greater to slightly smaller than its length; (3) adult females bearing welldeveloped frontoparietal crests, delimiting a mid-dorsal longitudinal groove; (4) posterior part of pars fascialis of maxilla deepened; (5) mandibular ramus of the trigeminal nerve passing lateral to the m. levator mandibulae posterior subexternus, (6) finger I much longer (FLI/SVL 0.15–0.23) than finger II (FLII/SVL 0.08 –012); (7) fifth toe smaller than third; (8) dorsum generally smooth, covered with keratin white dots, bearing only one or two granular dorsolateral ridges; (9) vocal sac and vocal slits absent in males; (10) no asperities on thumbs of males; (11) in adult live specimens, dorsal background dark reddish brown. The new combination herein proposed changes Hedges’ et al. (2008) generic diagnosis of Haddadus: (1) head narrower (or broader than body); (3) cranial crests absent (or present and well developed in females); (8) Toe III equal in length, slightly shorter (or clearly longer than Toe V); and (11) range in SVL 17 mm in only known specimen of H. plicifer (82 mm in females of H. aramunha). Comparisons with other species. Haddadus aramunha differs from H. binotatus by always presenting the head wider than long in females, and usually wider than long in males (always longer than wide in H. binotatus); shorter legs (slightly longer than SVL in H. aramunha (thigh + tibia + foot length about 1.05 SVL), and clearly longer than SVL in H. binotatus (thigh + tibia + foot length about 1.15 SVL); conspicuous frontoparietal crests in females, and poorly developed ones in males, delimiting a mid-dorsal longitudinal groove (absent in H. binotatus); Haddadus aramunha also differs from H. binotatus and H. plicifer (species data from Boulenger 1888) by the presence of only one or two granular dorsolateral ridges on dorsum (five symmetrical undulous linear folds on each side of the back in H. binotatus and H. plicifer). The dark reddish brown dorsal background in live adult females of H. aramunha differs this species from H. binotatus, which never presents such a pattern (See Fig. 1 of Napoli et al. 2010). Haddadus aramunha inhabits open areas, living near streams within “campo rupestre” environments, while H. binotatus and H. plicifer are restricted to forested areas of the tropical Atlantic forest.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2013-11-29 The taxonomic and biogeographic affinities of Strabomantis aramunha from the Campos Rupestres of Brazil are intriguing. A unique skull morphology of females suggest affinities with the broad-headed eleutherodactylines of Northwestern South America in the genus Strabomantis. Male and juvenile morphology nonetheless suggest S. aramunha could be related to members of the recently described genus Haddadus from eastern Brazil. We assess the affinities of S. aramunha using molecular phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial (12S, tRNAval, 16S, cyt b) and nuclear sequences (RAG-1and rhodopsin). Bayesian inference, likelihood, and parsimony analysis recover a highly supported clade with S. aramunha and H. binotatus as sister taxa. Accordingly, we transfer S. aramunha to Haddadus, and provide a new generic definition of the later. The distribution of species in Haddadus (highlands of the Espinhaço mountain Range and coastal eastern Brazil) is now concordant with the general pattern observed for other species in the area. © 2013 Magnolia Press. Hylids of the genus Phyllodytes are bromeligen (sensu Peixoto 1995) and vocalizations of only four species have been described until now (Lima et al. 2008). Here we describe for the first time the acoustic characteristics of the advertisement and territorial calls of P. tuberculosus Bokermann (Fig. 1A) from its type locality.

Gastrotheca flamma sp. nov. (Figures 1, 2 and 3) Gastrotheca sp. Juncá, 2006. Holotype. MZUEFS 657 (Fig. 1), adult female, from Serra da Jibóia, Municipality of Santa Terezinha (12 o 51 'S, 39 º 28 'W, 850 m altitude), State of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, collected on 14 June 2001 by F.A. Juncá. Diagnosis. A species promptly identified as a member of the genus Gastrotheca by having a dorsal pouch, and overall similarities. The new species is characterized by SVL 55.3 mm; TL half of SVL; UEW 57 % of IOD; skin on dorsum weakly granular; skin co-ossified on head, lacking transversal ridges; two supraocular tubercles (anterior largest); calcars present; tympanum rounded; snout truncate in dorsal view, nearly vertical in profile; Finger I longer than Finger II; discs much wider than digits; webbing poorly developed between Fingers II-III and III-IV; coloration: dorsal surfaces bright yellowish-brown, with dark-brown irregular blotches on dorsum, and transversal dark-brown bars on dorsal surfaces of the thigh, tibia, and forearm; transverse dark-brown interorbital bar and another of same color midway between eyes and nostrils; small irregular brown blotches on the lip; hidden surfaces of legs and ventral surfaces beige with irregular brown spots in gular region and on feet; small irregular brown blotches on dorsal surfaces of feet. Comparison with other species. Gastrotheca flamma sp. nov. differs from G. albolineata by its smaller female size (55.3 mm in G. flamma sp. nov., 60.0 mm in G. albolineata), head length similar to head width (HL about 101 % of HW in G. flamma sp. nov., 89 % in G. albolineata), skin adherent on head (not adherent in G. albolineata), snout nearly vertical in profile (snout obtuse in profile in G. albolineata), larger TD/ED ratio (TD 72 % of ED in G. flamma sp. nov., 55-65 % in G. albolineata), upper eyelid with two supraocular tubercles (absent in G. albolineata), presence of a fleshy calcar appendage (absent in G. albolineata), different foot webbing formula (I 2 – 2 II 1–2 1 / 2 III 1–2 - IV 1 1 / 2 – 1 V in G. flamma sp. nov., I 1– 2 II 1– 2 III 1 – 1 IV 1 – 1 V in G. albolineata), skin on dorsum slightly granulate (smooth in G. albolineata), different color pattern (see figures of G. albolineata in Sachsse et al. 1999, Gressler et al. 2008, and Izecksohn & Carvalho-e-Silva 2008). Description of holotype. Adult female with a dorsal pouch opened on sacral region but without eggs. Body moderately robust (Fig. 1 A,B). Head rounded in dorsal view, slightly longer than wide; HL 36.9 % of SVL. Snout truncate in dorsal and lateral views (Figs. 1 A and 2 A); canthus rostralis angular; loreal region concave; nostrils anteriorly positioned, directed laterally, IND 16.7 % of HW; lips thin, rounded. Vomerine teeth in two patches between the choanae. IOD 34.5 % of HW; eyes prominent. Upper eyelid with two supraocular tubercles (anterior largest; folded on the left eye due to preservation, but see Fig. 2 B). Tympanum ovoid, TD 18.62 % of HL, 71.7 % of ED; tympanic annulus distinct and ovoid, smooth. Distinct dorsolateral fold from supratympanic region to mid-flank. Arms robust, forearm hypertrophied. Axillary membrane absent. Hand large (Fig. 2 C), with ridge on external surface of Finger IV to wrist; fingers long, robust; fingers lengths II Color. In life (Fig. 3), dorsal surfaces reddish-brown, with dark-brown irregular blotches on dorsum and transverse dark-brown bars on dorsal surfaces of the thigh, tibia, and forearm. Markings on head consist of transverse dark-brown interorbital bar and another of the same color midway between eyes and nostrils; small irregular brown blotches on lip. Hidden portions of the leg and ventral surfaces beige, with irregular brown spots on throat and foot; small irregular brown blotches on dorsal surfaces of feet. In preservative (Figs. 1 and 2), the color pattern is the same, but colors are faded. Mesurements of holotype. SVL 55.3, HL 20.4, HW 20.3, IND 3.4, NSD 2.1, ETD 0.4, ED 5.3, IOD 7.0, UEW 4.7, END 5.4, TD 3.8, FAL 11.1, HAL 15.5, 3 FD 3.4, 4 TD 3.0, THL 27.6, TL 27.9, FL 38.0. Geographic distribution. Known only from the type locality in the Serra da Jibóia, which has a maximum elevation of approximately 850 m and; this mountain range is located between the municipalities of Santa Terezinha and Elísio Medrado, State of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. According to Juncá (2006), this region is an ecotone between the biomes of Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Rain Forest) and Caatinga (dry open forest) (sensu Ab’Saber 1977), and is one of the westernmost points of Atlantic Rain Forest in the State of Bahia. This area lies between the vast dry open forest to the west, humid forest to the east, and “campos rupestres” in highlands (Juncá 2006; for a brief description and discussion about the Brazilian “campos rupestres”, see Heyer 1999). Farms are distributed throught the mountain range, and only small remnants of forest are present. Etymology. The specific epithet flamma, a noun in apposition, is a Latin substantive used in allusion to the color pattern, which resemble “fire”.

This locality belongs to Chapada Diamantina, a semiarid region in central Bahia. This is the first record of a species of the B. circumdata group from the Brazilian semiarid. Bokermannohyla diamantina is diagnosed by the medium size (snout-vent length 47.0–51.7 mm in adult specimens); head length 2.8–2.9 times smaller than snout-vent length; tympanum medium-sized, its diameter 1.3–1.5 times smaller than eye diameter (tympanum diameter/snout-vent length 0.07); thigh and tibia lengths 0.48–0.52 and 0.49–0.51 of snout-vent length, respectively; dorsum medium to blackish brown, with weak transverse dark brown bars; flanks, anterior, and posterior surfaces of thighs with dark transverse brown stripes, lacking additional thin stripes between them; distinct vocal slits in adult males; advertisement call with 2–4 notes, and dominant frequency from 0.39–0.56 kHz.
