Abstract Bi4Br4 is a material rich in intriguing topological properties. Monolayer Bi4Br4 film exhibits helical edge states characteristic of a quantum spin Hall insulator, while bulk Bi4Br4 represents a higher-order topological insulator with hinge states. However, direct exfoliation from single crystal can only obtain thin nanowires due to the weak van der Waals forces between Bi4Br4 chains, which limits its optical analysis and application, while the growth of Bi4Br4 thin films is also full of challenges due to the extremely narrow growth temperature range and the accurate control of the BiBr3 flux. Here, we reported the controlled growth of α-Bi4Br4 thin films on intrinsic silicon substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The growth temperature, BiBr3 flux, and the flux ratio of Bi and BiBr3 were accurately controlled. Then, the morphology, composition, and bonding of the prepared films were investigated using atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The growth of large, uniform thin films provides an ideal material platform for studying the physical properties of Bi4Br4. Additionally, we utilized Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to explore the film’s infrared characteristics, revealing strong absorption in the low frequency range due to the high proportion of one-dimensional topological edge states and laying the groundwork for further exploration of its potential applications in the optoelectronic field.

In intersatellite laser communications, the centroiding accuracy of a laser spot is crucial for maintaining steady communication links. However, the systematic error introduced by discrete sampling restricts further improvement of centroiding accuracy when choosing algorithms that are widely used in engineering. Additionally, the ultrahigh computational complexity and multiple-step iterations of the Gaussian fitting (GF) algorithm are unsuitable for real-time implementation, even though the algorithm can achieve the highest centroiding accuracy. In this study, we propose a laser spot centroiding algorithm based on template correlation to simultaneously satisfy the requirements of real-time performance and accuracy. The proposed algorithm evaluates the central location of a laser spot by obtaining the index of the maximum Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC). Simulations performed under different conditions reveal that the proposed algorithm is robust against the interference of background noise and the bad pixels. Moreover, experimental verification is performed based on the implementation on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) in real-time, meanwhile its accuracy is on the same level as that of the GF algorithm and better than those of other widely-used algorithms. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is suitable for accurate real-time locating of laser spots in engineering applications of the intersatellite laser communications.

Abstract The notion of topological insulators (TIs), characterized by an insulating bulk and conducting topological surface states, can be extended to higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) hosting gapless modes localized at the boundaries of two or more dimensions lower than the insulating bulk. In this work, by performing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements with submicron spatial and spin resolution, we systematically investigate the electronic structure and spin texture of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) HOTI candidate Bi4Br4. In contrast to the bulk-state-dominant spectra on the (001) surface, we observe gapped surface states on the (100) surface, whose dispersion and spin-polarization agree well with our ab-initio calculations. Moreover, we reveal in-gap states connecting the surface valence and conduction bands, which is a signature of the hinge states inside the (100) surface gap. Our findings provide compelling evidence for the HOTI phase of Bi4Br4. The identification of the higher-order topological phase promises applications based on 1D spin-momentum locked current in electronic and spintronic devices.

Understanding the transport mechanism is crucial for developing inhibitors that block allergen absorption and transport and prevent allergic reactions. However, the process of how beta-conglycinin, the primary allergen in soybeans, crosses the intestinal mucosal barrier remains unclear. The present study indicated that the transport of beta-conglycinin hydrolysates by IPEC-J2 monolayers occurred in a time- and quantity-dependent manner. The beta-conglycinin hydrolysates were absorbed into the cytoplasm of IPEC-J2 monolayers, while none were detected in the intercellular spaces. Furthermore, inhibitors such as methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MβCD) and chlorpromazine (CPZ) significantly suppressed the absorption and transport of beta-conglycinin hydrolysates. Of particular interest, sodium cromoglycate (SCG) exhibited a quantity-dependent nonlinear suppression model on the absorption and transport of beta-conglycinin hydrolysates. In conclusion, beta-conglycinin crossed the IPEC-J2 monolayers through a transcellular pathway, involving both clathrin-mediated and caveolae-dependent endocytosis mechanisms. SCG suppressed the absorption and transport of beta-conglycinin hydrolysates by the IPEC-J2 monolayers by a quantity-dependent nonlinear model via clathrin-mediated and caveolae-dependent endocytosis. These findings provide promising targets for both the prevention and treatment of soybean allergies.

Abstract Background Tuberculous meningitis (TBM), complicated with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), has been sparsely reported and needs to be investigated further. Methods Among those with tuberculous meningitis in Haihe Hospital, Tianjin University, 3 patients with venous sinus thrombosis were identified retrospectively. “Tuberculous meningitis” and “cerebral venous thrombosis” were used as keywords, and the retrieved literature was summarized and analyzed. Our data were combined with previously reported case data to describe this new condition. Results Among 28 patients with a median onset age of 31 years for TBM, 17 were females. The manifestations were fever, headache, and seizure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) venography showed that the most common site of venous sinus thrombosis involved superior sagittal sinus, left transverse sinus, left sigmoid sinus, cavernous sinus, and straight sinus. The abnormalities found on MRI include hydrocephalus, exudates, hemorrhage, meningeal enhancement, infarction, and tuberculoma. In the acute phase, all patients received standard anti-TB treatment, and 14/28 patients received anticoagulant treatment. The mortality rate of these patients was 17.9%, and 21/28 (75%) became functionally independent. Conclusions CVT is one of the rare complications of TMB and must be considered a differential diagnosis in patients with TBM who show poor clinical features and/or develop new neurological signs.

Brain–computer interface (BCI) for motor imagery is an advanced technology used in the field of medical rehabilitation. However, due to the poor accuracy of electroencephalogram feature classification, BCI systems often misrecognize user commands. Although many state-of-the-art feature selection methods aim to enhance classification accuracy, they usually overlook the interrelationships between individual features, indirectly impacting the accuracy of feature classification. To overcome this issue, we propose an adaptive feature learning model that employs a Riemannian geometric approach to generate a feature matrix from electroencephalogram signals, serving as the model’s input. By integrating the enhanced adaptive L1 penalty and weighted fusion penalty into the sparse learning model, we select the most informative features from the matrix. Specifically, we measure the importance of features using mutual information and introduce an adaptive weight construction strategy to penalize regression coefficients corresponding to each variable adaptively. Moreover, the weighted fusion penalty balances weight differences among correlated variables, reducing the model’s overreliance on specific variables and enhancing accuracy. The performance of the proposed method was validated on BCI Competition IV datasets IIa and IIb using the support vector machine. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed model compared to the existing models.

BackgroundSleeve gastrectomy (SG) results in bone mineral density (BMD) loss and varying body composition parameters. However, the effects of body compositions on bone health are controversial. In order to accurately demonstrate their relationship and provide new insights into the causes of BMD loss after sleeve gastrectomy, this study is aimed to investigate the role of changes in body composition in BMD loss 12 months after SG.Methods41 Chinese individuals with obesity (25 women and 16 men) who underwent SG were prospectively examined for at least 12 months. Measurements of anthropometrics, body composition, BMD and blood samples were collected.ResultsFor 12 months, the femoral neck (FN) BMD and total hip (TH) BMD decreased significantly compared with baseline in both sexes but not lumbar spine (LS) BMD. Greater TH BMD loss was observed in men than in women. For the first 6 months post-SG, the FN BMD loss was positively associated with the estimated fat free mass index (eFFMI) reduction in women (adjusted β = 0.77, P = 0.004) and positively associated with reduction of subcutaneous fat area (SFA) in men (r = 0.931, P = 0.007). For 12 months post-SG, the FN BMD loss was negatively associated with visceral fat area (VFA) reduction in women (adjusted β = -0.58, P = 0.027) and men (adjusted β = -0.68, P = 0.032). TH BMD loss was positively associated with waist circumference reduction in women (r = 0.448, P = 0.028).ConclusionFN and TH BMD decrease after SG in both women and men. The changes in body compositions are associated with BMD loss at different time points and bone sites. Our data emphasize the limitation of simply taking the total weight loss (% TWL) as an influencing factor of bone mineral density and the necessity of delineating body composition in relevant studies.

ABSTRACT: Aims: A high proportion of all patients with tuberculosis (TB) present with extrapulmonary TB (EPTB), including concurrent EPTB involving more than one extrapulmonary lesion site. However, previous reports only characterized lesions of single-site EPTB cases. This study aimed to investigate epidemiological characteristics and association rules of concurrent EPTB cases in China. Methods: An observational multi-centre study of 208,214 patients with EPTB lesions was undertaken in China from January 2011 to December 2017. Multi-variable logistic regression analysis was used to identify associations between gender and concurrent EPTB, and age and concurrent EPTB. Association rules were analysed for significance using the Apriori algorithm. Results: The most common EPTB lesion was tuberculous pleurisy (49.8%), followed by bronchial TB (14.8%) and tuberculous meningitis (7.6%). The most common type of concurrent EPTB was tuberculous pleurisy concurrent with tuberculous peritonitis (1.80%). In total, 22 association rules, including 20 strong association rules, were identified; among these, the highest confidence rates were found for tuberculous myelitis concurrent with tuberculous meningitis, and sacral TB concurrent with lumbar vertebral TB. The association rules of EPTB concurrent with other EPTB types were found to vary with gender and age. The confidence rate of tuberculous myelitis concurrent with tuberculous meningitis was higher in females (83.67%) than males, and was highest in patients aged 25–34 years (87.50%). Conclusions: Many types of concurrent EPTB were found. Greater awareness of concurrent EPTB disease characteristics is needed to ensure timely clinical diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

The establishment of the correspondence between the important features of the topside weld pool and the penetration state is a key link in penetration control. This article presents a scheme of variable gap welding penetration control based on rough-fuzzy modeling. By utilizing the basic concepts of variable precision rough sets and conditional information entropy, relevant algorithms for attribute reduction and rule extraction in decision information systems are addressed. Raw data for modeling are obtained through current–gap combination experiments, and then rough-set-based knowledge acquisition algorithms are used to generate classification rules for the penetration state. Based on the correspondence between the important features of the topside pool and the penetration state, a fuzzy control model is established. Welding experiments under variable gaps are conducted to examine the proposed control scheme, and the results indicate that the weld has good penetration and meets the requirements of welding specifications.

Background. Tuberculosis (TB), a multisystemic disease with protean presentation, remains a major global health problem. Although concurrent pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) cases are commonly observed clinically, knowledge regarding concurrent PTB-EPTB is limited. Here, a large-scale multicenter observational study conducted in China aimed to study the epidemiology of concurrent PTB-EPTB cases by diagnostically defining TB types and then implementing association rules analysis. Methods. The retrospective study was conducted at 21 hospitals in 15 provinces in China and included all inpatients with confirmed TB diagnoses admitted from Jan 2011 to Dec 2017. Association rules analysis was conducted for cases with concurrent PTB and various types of EPTB using the Apriori algorithm. Results. Evaluation of 438,979TB inpatients indicated PTB was the most commonly diagnosed (82.05%) followed by tuberculous pleurisy (23.62%). Concurrent PTB-EPTB was found in 129,422 cases (29.48%) of which tuberculous pleurisy was the most common concurrent EPTB type observed. The multivariable logistic regression models demonstrated that odds ratios of concurrent PTB-EPTB cases varied by gender and age group. For PTB cases with concurrent EPTB, the strongest association was found between PTB and concurrent bronchial tuberculosis (lift = 1.09). For EPTB cases with concurrent PTB, the strongest association was found between pharyngeal/laryngeal tuberculosis and concurrent PTB (lift = 1.11). Confidence and lift values of concurrent PTB-EPTB cases varied with gender and age. Conclusions. Numerous concurrent PTB-EPTB case types were observed, with confidence and lift values varying with gender and age. Clinicians should screen for concurrent PTB-EPTB in order to improve treatment outcomes.

Bismuth halogenides, a family of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials, including α and α phases of Bi4Br4 and Bi4I4, have been predicted to exhibit rich and interesting topological properties. The single layer of Bi4Br4 was demonstrated to be a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) with a 0.18 eV gap. Such a band gap is large enough for the observation of QSHI at room temperature. Bulk α-Bi4Br4 was categorized as a higher-order topological insulator and was soon examined in experiments. In addition, the α-Bi4Br4 exhibit simultaneously the topological phase and superconductive phase under 3.8–4.3 GPa pressure. While the single layer of Bi4I4 was shown to be close to the critical point of the QSHI/trivial-insulator phase transition, the α-Bi4I4 was considered to be a strong or weak topological insulator. In this work, we reviewed the recent progress in the topological properties of bismuth halogenides, including the theoretical calculations, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanned tunneling microscopy analyses, quantum transport measurement and the superconducting phase transfer under pressure. We expect further research of this family material about the non-trivial superconductor and possible Majorana, room-temperature quantum transport effect and potential application in the quantum device for the electronics and information technology.

BackgroundSleeve gastrectomy is an effective bariatric procedure; however, sleeve gastrectomy-related adverse skeletal outcomes have been increasingly reported. High levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) have been documented to be a risk factor of bone mineral density (BMD) loss with different effects observed between sexes. The aim of this study was to identify sex-specific changes in BMD following sleeve gastrectomy and to evaluate the role of SHBG in this process.MethodsThis retrospective study included 19 middle-aged men and 30 non-menopausal women with obesity who underwent sleeve gastrectomy in China. Anthropometrics, bone turnover markers, calciotropic hormones, BMD, SHBG, and gonadal steroids were measured preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Longitudinal changes in BMD, bone turnover markers and SHBG were compared between sexes by linear mixed models. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was used to identify the predictors of BMD loss at the investigated bone sites.ResultsOver the 12-month study period, total hip and femoral neck BMD decreased, while lumbar spine BMD remained largely unchanged in both sexes. Linear mixed models revealed significant sex × time interaction effects in total hip BMD and SHBG, showing that men had a significantly greater reduction in total hip BMD and less increase in SHBG after sleeve gastrectomy than women. In the multivariate model, SHBG was significantly associated with total hip BMD loss in men (adjusted β = −0.533, P = 0.019) but not women while total estrogen was significantly associated with total hip BMD loss in women (adjusted β = 0.508, P = 0.01) but not men.ConclusionSignificant sex-specific BMD changes were observed after sleeve gastrectomy in the current study. Sleeve gastrectomy-related increase in SHBG may be a specific risk factor for total hip BMD loss in men. Our results indicate that sex-specific screening may be warranted to facilitate personalized postoperative bone care in this population.

Abstract Introduction: We explored whether visceral fat accumulation mediates the development of hepatic steatosis in overweight and obese individuals. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 769 overweight and obese outpatients aged 18 to 65 years. The controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) was used to quantify the degree of hepatic steatosis. Visceral fat accumulation represented by the visceral fat area (VFA) was measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The associations of body mass index (BMI), VFA, and CAP with each other were assessed by univariate analysis, multivariate linear regression, and mediation analysis, respectively. Results: Compared with women, men subjects had a higher BMI, VFA, and CAP levels. In both sex, CAP was positively correlated with BMI and VFA by the univariate analysis. After adjusting for demographic and serum characteristics, the linear correlation coefficients between BMI and CAP were 1.738 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.100, 2.377], 1.524 (95% CI: 0.798, 2.249), and 2.650 (95% CI: 1.292, 4.009) in all subjects, females, and males, respectively, while those between VFA and CAP were 0.190 (95% CI: 0.133, 0.247), 0.184 (95% CI: 0.117, 0.252), and 0.194 (95% CI: 0.086, 0.301). Mediation analysis showed that visceral fat accumulation contributed to 51.37%, 53.85%, and 26.51% of obesity-induced hepatic steatosis in the total, female, and male subjects, respectively. Conclusion: Visceral fat accumulation partially mediates obesity-induced hepatic steatosis in overweight and obese individuals, especially in women. More focus on visceral fat reduction is needed in obese individuals.

Objective: White adipose tissue (WAT) possesses the remarkable remodeling capacity, and maladaptation of this ability contributes to the development of obesity and associated comorbidities. Calsyntenin-3 (CLSTN3) is a transmembrane protein that promotes synapse development in brain. Even though this gene has been reported to be associated with adipose tissue, its role in the regulation of WAT function is unknown yet. We aim to further assess the expression pattern of CLSTN3 gene in human adipose tissue, and investigate its regulatory impact on WAT function. Methods: In our study, we observed the expression pattern of Clstn3/CLSTN3 gene in mouse and human WAT. Genetic association study and expression quantitative trait loci analysis were combined to identify the phenotypic effect of CLSTN3 gene variant in humans. This was followed by mouse experiments using adeno-associated virus-mediated human CLSTN3 overexpression in inguinal WAT. We investigated the effect of CLSTN3 on WAT function and overall metabolic homeostasis, as well as the possible underlying molecular mechanism. Results: We observed that CLSTN3 gene was routinely expressed in human WAT and predominantly enriched in adipocyte fraction. Furthermore, we identified that the variant rs7296261 in the CLSTN3 locus was associated with a high risk of obesity, and its risk allele was linked to an increase in CLSTN3 expression in human WAT. Overexpression of CLSTN3 in inguinal WAT of mice resulted in diet-induced local dysfunctional expansion, liver steatosis, and systemic metabolic deficiency. In vivo and ex vivo lipolysis assays demonstrated that CLSTN3 overexpression attenuated catecholamine-stimulated lipolysis. Mechanistically, CLSTN3 could interact with amyloid precursor protein (APP) in WAT and increase APP accumulation in mitochondria, which in turn impaired adipose mitochondrial function and promoted obesity. Conclusion: Taken together, we provide the evidence for a novel role of CLSTN3 in modulating WAT function, thereby reinforcing the fact that targeting CLSTN3 may be a potential approach for the treatment of obesity and associated metabolic diseases.

Premenopausal women, who account for more than half of patients for bariatric surgery, are at higher risk of developing postoperative iron deficiency anemia (IDA) than postmenopausal women and men. We aimed at establishing a machine learning model to evaluate the risk of newly onset IDA in premenopausal women 12 months after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Premenopausal women with complete clinical records and undergoing SG were enrolled in this retrospective study. Newly onset IDA after surgery, the main outcome, was defined according to the age- and gender-specific World Health Organization criteria. A linear support vector machine model was developed to predict the risk of IDA after SG with the top five important features identified during feature selection. Four hundred and seven subjects aged 31.0 (Interquartile range (IQR): 26.0–36.0) years with a median follow-up period of 12 (IQR 7–13) months were analyzed. They were divided into a training set and a validation set with 285 and 122 individuals, respectively. Preoperative ferritin, age, hemoglobin, creatinine, and fasting C-peptide were included. The model showed moderate discrimination in both sets (area under curve 0.858 and 0.799, respectively, p < 0.001). The calibration curve indicated acceptable consistency between observed and predicted results in both sets. Moreover, decision curve analysis showed substantial clinical benefits of the model in both sets. Our machine learning model could accurately predict newly onset IDA in Chinese premenopausal women with obesity 12 months after SG. External validation was required before the model was used in clinical practice.

The signal-receiving end of acquisition, pointing, and tracking (APT) systems applied to intersatellite laser communication terminals usually uses a fast-steering mirror (FSM) to control the fiber-coupling process, has a complex structural design, and induces large errors in the nonideal coaxial optical path. Herein, we propose a fiber-optic nutator using a piezoelectric ceramic tube (PCT) as the driving unit that allows scanning in the focal plane of the light signal to achieve active fiber coupling in the APT system. Specifically, this article describes the structural design principle of a PCT-based fiber optic nutator, establishes a simulation model of the mechanism, and proves the correctness of the simulation model by measuring the deflection angle of a PCT based on a parallel light collimator. The minimum accuracy of the designed nutator was 0.145 μm, the maximum nutation radius R was 20.09 μm, and the maximum nutation bandwidth was 20 kHz, as determined through simulation. Finally, the design parameters of the nutator were evaluated. The PCT-based fiber optic nutator, which met the design parameters, structurally replaced the fiber optic coupling component FSM and fine tracking camera in conventional APT systems successfully. Therefore, the PCT-based fiber optic nutator allows the active coupling control of signal light to a single-mode fiber (SMF) based on energy feedback on a theoretical basis and promotes the lightweight design of relay optical paths in APT systems. In addition, with future work in optimization of the nutation control algorithm, the scanning range and accuracy of the nutator can be improved.

With the development of space laser communication and the planned deployment of satellite Internet constellations, there is a growing demand for microminiature laser communication terminals. To meet the requirements of size, weight and power (SWaP), miniaturized terminals require smaller drive components to complete on-orbit scanning and capture, which must be fast and efficient to enable satellite laser communication networks. These miniaturized laser communication terminals are highly susceptible to the impact of the initial pointing accuracy of the laser beam and microvibrations of the satellite platform. Therefore, this paper proposes a laser scanning-capture model based on a Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS) micromirror that can provide a fast, large-scale scanning analysis. A scanning overlap factor is introduced to improve the capture probability under the influence of microvibrations. Finally, experimental analysis was carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, which can establish a theoretical basis for future ultra-long-distance microspace laser communication.

The magnetohydrodynamic angular rate sensor (MHD ARS) is a high-bandwidth, high-accuracy sensor that is increasingly used to measure spacecraft harmonic vibration. However, the amplitude of harmonic vibration is usually on the order of microradian to milliradian, and the induced electric potential signal of MHD ARS is only on the order of nanovolt to microvolt, which is easily disturbed by noise. In this paper, an improved method based on autocorrelation with Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) and Wavelet Threshold Denoising (WTD) is proposed to denoise the signal of MHD ARS. Firstly, CEEMDAN is used to decompose noisy signals and obtain intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), and autocorrelation is used to determine the relevant modes where the effective signals are located. Then, the improved threshold and thresholding function are used to denoise the relevant modes. Finally, the denoised signal is obtained by combining the denoised relevant modes. In the experiment, noisy MHD ARS signals were recorded in static and dynamic conditions, and the effects of the proposed method and conventional methods were compared. The results of the Allan variance in the static condition and root-mean-square error in the dynamic condition show that the proposed method can effectively overcome the shortcomings of conventional methods and obtain a better denoising effect.

ObjectiveNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease. The controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) obtained by FibroScan reflects the level of liver steatosis in patients with obesity. Our study aimed to construct a simple equation to predict the CAP, to facilitate the screening and monitoring of patients at high risk for NAFLD.MethodsA total of 272 subjects were randomly divided into derivation and validation cohorts at a ratio of 1:2. The derivation set was used for constructing a multiple linear regression model; the validation set was used to verify the validity of the model.ResultsSeveral variables strongly correlated with the CAP were used to construct the following equation for predicting CAP values:CAP1 = 2.4 × BMI + 10.5 × TG+ 3.6 × NC + 10.3 × CP +31.0, where BMI is body mass index, TG is triglyceride, NC is neck circumference and CP is C-peptide. The CAP1 model had an R2 of 0.764 and adjusted R2 of 0.753. It was then simplified to derive CAP2 included only simple anthropometric parameters: CAP2 = 3.5 × BMI + 4.2 × NC + 20.3 (R2 = 0.696, adjusted R2 = 0.689). The data were well fitted by both models. In the verification group, the predicted (CAP1 and CAP2) values were compared to the actual CAP values. For the CAP1 equation, R2 = 0.653, adjusted R2 = 0.651. For the CAP2 equation, R2 = 0.625, adjusted R2 = 0.623. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) values were 0.781 for CAP1 and 0.716 for CAP2 (p < 0.001). The actual CAP and the predicted CAP also showed good agreement in Bland-Altman plot.ConclusionThe equations for predicting the CAP value comprise easily accessible variables, and showed good stability and predictive power. Thus, they can be used as simple surrogate tools for early screening and follow-up of NAFLD in the Chinese population.

ObjectiveVisceral obesity, reflected by the amount of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), is associated with multiple chronic diseases and metabolic disorders. The visceral fat area (VFA), measured by MRI, is the ‘gold standard’ for diagnosis of visceral obesity. In this study, a simple model to predict VFA was constructed to facilitate the identification and monitoring of patients who are at high risk of visceral obesity.MethodsThe 721 overweight and obese participants were divided into two groups according to sex, then randomly assigned to derivation and validation cohorts in a 1:2 ratio. Data from the derivation group were used to construct a multiple linear regression model; data from the validation group were used to verify the validity of the model.ResultsThe following prediction equations, applicable to both sexes, were developed based on age, waist circumference (WC) and neck circumference (NC) that exhibited strong correlations with the VFA: VFA=3.7×age+2.4×WC+5.5×NC-443.6 (R2 = 0.511, adjusted R2 = 0.481, for men) and VFA=2.8×age+1.7×WC+6.5×NC-367.3 (R2 = 0.442, adjusted R2 = 0.433, for women). The data demonstrated good fit for both sexes. A comparison of the predicted and actual VFA in the verification group confirmed the accuracy of the equations: for men, R2 = 0.489, adjusted R2 = 0.484 and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.653 (p < 0.001) and for women: R2 = 0.538, adjusted R2= 0.536 and ICC = 0.672 (p < 0.001). The actual and predicted VFAs also showed good agreement in a Bland-Altman plot, indicating the significant correlations of both equations with the actual VFA.ConclusionsBased on readily available anthropometric data, VFA prediction equations consisting of age, WC and NC were developed. The equations are robust, with good predictive power in both sexes; they provide ideal tools for the early detection of visceral obesity in Chinese overweight and obese individuals.

The geometrical error caused pointing error is an inevitable problem in space satellite laser communication terminals which can affect the pointing accuracy of the APT (acquisition pointing and tracking) system greatly, in order to facilitate the assembling of the APT system and improve the performance of the laser communication system, the geometrical error sensitivity about the APT pointing accuracy is analyzed based on multi-body kinematics method in this paper, the error transformation matrix is derived and the geometrical error is analyzed, the simulation results provide some pointing error distribution regulars which are conductive to assembling. Based on the above research, the geometrical error correction experiment is performed and the pointing accuracy of the APT system is tested, the expectation value of the pointing error can reach 29.9 µrad which is greatly improved. This research can provide technical references for the design and analysis of space laser communication terminals.

Novel optoelectronic properties have recently been observed in topological semimetals. Here, Wang et al. report a robust photocurrent generated from charge separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs at the edge of a type-II Weyl semimetal, T d-WTe2.

Objective To investigate the effect of drug treatment combined with interventional cavity therapy for cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis. Methods One-hundred thirty patients who underwent transbronchial tuberculosis cavity plugging (TTCP) combined with drug therapy from 2012 to 2018 were selected as the observation group, and 130 patients with cavitary tuberculosis who underwent treatment with drugs only were selected as the control group. Changes in cavity size and sputum tests were compared between the two groups. In addition, adverse reactions were monitored. Results The number of cases with cavity closure was significantly higher in the observation group than in the control group at different time points. The number and proportion of negative sputum samples in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The treatment success rate was 98.46% in the observation group and 92.3% in the control group. No recurrence was observed in the observation group, and 8.3% of cases in the control group showed recurrence. Conclusions TTCP for the treatment of cavity tuberculosis showed good outcomes, with limited side effects and minimal complications.

Background: Leptin has been shown to stimulate the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in vivo and vitro. Its role in thyroid axis regulation after weight loss induced by bariatric surgery is still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of leptin on weight loss and thyroid function variation induced by Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery in euthyroid individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: 65 Chinese individuals with obesity and T2DM who underwent RYGB, and 27 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this retrospective study. Participants were evaluated for changes in anthropometric parameters, metabolic indexes, thyroid function, and leptin levels before and 12 months after surgery. Results: After RYGB, all of these patients experienced significant weight reduction and improved glucose control. Metabolic parameters were significantly ameliorated after surgery compared with baseline. Thyroid hormones including free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) declined in parallel. Median (IQR) plasma leptin levels decreased from 33.7 ng/mL (17.9–63.1) to 10.3 ng/mL (4.0–18.5). Pearson correlation analysis showed that TSH was significantly positively correlated with body mass index, C-reactive protein (CRP), and leptin. Multiple stepwise linear regression indicated that leptin and CRP were independent factors affecting TSH. The β coefficients were 0.38 (p = 0.001) and 0.32 (p = 0.004), respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between ΔTSH and Δleptin (r = 0.33, p = 0.01). Conclusion: Decreased or normalized TSH levels after weight loss induced by RYGB might be mediated by the decline in leptin. There could be cross talk between adipose tissue and the HPT axis.

In this paper, a tracking and pointing control system with dual-FSM (fast steering mirror) composite axis is proposed. It is applied to the target-tracking accuracy control in a 3D GISC LiDAR (three-dimensional ghost imaging LiDAR via sparsity constraint) system. The tracking and pointing imaging control system of the dual-FSM 3D GISC LiDAR proposed in this paper is a staring imaging method with multiple measurements, which mainly solves the problem of high-resolution remote-sensing imaging of high-speed moving targets when the technology is transformed into practical applications. In the research of this control system, firstly, we propose a method that combines motion decoupling and sensor decoupling to solve the mechanical coupling problem caused by the noncoaxial sensor installation of the FSM. Secondly, we suppress the inherent mechanical resonance of the FSM in the control system. Thirdly, we propose the optical path design of a dual-FSM 3D GISC LiDAR tracking imaging system to solve the problem of receiving aperture constraint. Finally, after sufficient experimental verification, our method is shown to successfully reduce the coupling from 7% to 0.6%, and the precision tracking bandwidth reaches 300 Hz. Moreover, when the distance between the GISC system and the target is 2.74 km and the target flight speed is 7 m/s, the tracking accuracy of the system is improved from 15.7 μrad (σ) to 2.2 μrad (σ), and at the same time, the system recognizes the target contour clearly. Our research is valuable to put the GISC technology into practical applications.

BackgroundThe simultaneous assessment of visceral adiposity and muscle mass might be useful to monitor the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) progression in large population. We aimed to investigate the value of serum creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio (CCR) in evaluating these two parameters and predicting liver steatosis and fibrosis.Methods154 overweight/obese inpatients (49 males, 105 females) scheduled for bariatric surgery and 49 non-overweight/obese volunteers (18 males, 31 females) responded to the hospital advertisement were involved in the cross-sectional study. Liver steatosis and fibrosis were diagnosed with transient elastography (TE). The psoas muscle area (PMA) and visceral fat area (VFA) were measured using magnetic resonance imaging.ResultsThe body mass index, insulin resistance, and lipid profiles showed significant differences between the CCR tertiles. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the CCR was significantly associated with the controlled attenuation parameter (β = −0.30, P = 0.006 in males; β = −0.19, P = 0.017 in females) and liver stiffness measurements in males (β = −0.246, P = 0.044). A low CCR was associated with moderate-to-severe steatosis (P < 0.001), significant liver fibrosis (P < 0.01), and excellent predictive power for these two conditions (P < 0.01). The CCR had a negative correlation with the VFA/PMA ratio (r = −0.584, P < 0.001 in males; r = −0.569, P < 0.001 in females).ConclusionsThe CCR is a serum marker for muscle-adjusted visceral fat mass, and a low CCR is associated with an increased risk of progressive NAFLD.

Mitochondrial iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster is an important cofactor for the maturation of Fe-S proteins, which are ubiquitously involved in energy metabolism; however, factors facilitating this process in beige fat have not been established. Here, we identified BolA family member 3 (Bola3), as one of 17 mitochondrial Fe-S cluster assembly genes, was the most significant induced gene in the browning program of white adipose tissue. Using lentiviral-delivered shRNA in vitro, we determined that Bola3 deficiency inhibited thermogenesis activity without affecting lipogenesis in differentiated beige adipocytes. The inhibition effect of Bola3 knockdown might be through impairing mitochondrial homeostasis and lipolysis. This was evidenced by the decreased expression of mitochondria related genes and respiratory chain complexes, attenuated mitochondrial formation, reduced mitochondrial maximal respiration and inhibited isoproterenol-stimulated lipolysis. Furthermore, BOLA3 mRNA levels were higher in human deep neck brown fat than in the paired subcutaneous white fat, and were positively correlated with thermogenesis related genes (UCP1, CIDEA, PRDM16, PPARG, COX7A1, and LIPE) expression in human omental adipose depots. This study demonstrates that Bola3 is associated with adipose tissue oxidative capacity both in mice and human, and it plays an indispensable role in beige adipocyte thermogenesis via maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and adrenergic signaling-induced lipolysis.

Introduction: Bariatric surgery is a well-received treatment for obesity with maximal weight loss at 12–36 months postoperatively. We investigated the effect of early bariatric surgery on weight reduction of Chinese patients in accordance with their preoperation characteristics.Materials and Methods: Altogether, 409 patients with obesity from a prospective cohort in a single bariatric center were enrolled retrospectively and evaluated for up to 4 years. Measurements obtained included surgery type, duration of diabetic condition, besides the usual body mass index data tuple. Weight reduction was expressed as percent total weight loss (%TWL) and percent excess weight loss (%EWL).Results: RYGB or SG were performed laparoscopically without mortality or complications. BMI generally plateaued at 12 months, having decreased at a mean of 8.78 kg/m2. Successful weight loss of >25% TWL was achieved by 35.16, 49.03, 39.22, 27.74, 20.83% of patients at 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 months after surgery. Overall, 52.91% of our patients had lost 100% of their excess weight at 12 months, although there was a rather wide range among individuals. Similar variability was revealed in women of child-bearing age.Conclusion: Chinese patients undergoing bariatric surgery tend to achieve maximal weight loss and stabilization between 12 and 24 months postoperatively, instead of at >2 years. The finding of the shorter stabilization interval has importance to earlier intervention of weight loss related conditions and women's conception planning.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a serious global public health problem in the present. TB also affects other sites (extrapulmonary tuberculosis, EPTB), and accounts for a significant proportion of tuberculosis cases worldwide. In order to comprehensively understand epidemiology of EBTB in China, and improve early diagnosis and treatment, we conducted a large-scale multi-center observational study to assess the demographic data and the prevalence of common EPTB inpatients, and further evaluate the prevalence of EPTB concurrent with Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and the associations between multiple EPTB types and gender-age group in China. All consecutive age≥15yr inpatients with a confirmed diagnosis of EPTB during the period from January 2011 to December 2017 were included in the study. The descriptive statistical analysis included median and quartile measurements for continuous variables, and frequencies and proportions with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for categorical variables. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to compare the association of multiple EPTB types between age group and gender. The results showed that the proportion of 15-24 years and 25-34 years in EPTB inpatients were the most and the ratio of male: female was 1.51. Approximately 70% of EPTB inpatients were concurrent with PTB or other types of EPTB. The most common of EPTB was tuberculous pleurisy (50.15%), followed by bronchial tuberculosis (14.96%), tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck (7.24%), tuberculous meningitis (7.23%), etc. It was found that many EPTB inpatients concurrent with PTB. The highest prevalence of EPTB concurrent with PTB was pharyngeal/laryngeal tuberculosis (91.31%), followed by bronchial tuberculosis (89.52%), tuberculosis of hilar lymph nodes (79.52%), tuberculosis of mediastinal lymph nodes (79.13%), intestinal tuberculosis (72.04%), tuberculous pleurisy (65.31%) and tuberculous meningitis (62.64%), etc. The results from EPTB concurrent with PTB suggested that females EPTB inpatients were less likely to be at higher risk of concurrent PTB (aOR = 0.819, 95%CI:0.803-0.835) after adjusted by age. As age increasing, the trend risk of concurrent PTB decreased (aOR = 0.994, 95%CI: 0.989-0.999) after adjusted by gender. Our study demonstrated that the common EPTB were tuberculous pleurisy, bronchial tuberculosis, tuberculous lymphadenitis of the neck, tuberculous meningitis, etc. A majority of patients with pharyngeal/laryngeal tuberculosis, bronchial tuberculosis, tuberculosis of hilar/mediastinal lymph nodes, intestinal tuberculosis, tuberculous pleurisy, tuberculous meningitis, etc. were concurrent with PTB. Female EPTB inpatients were less likely to be at higher risk of concurrent PTB, and as age increasing, the trend risk of concurrent PTB decreased. The clinicians should be alert to the presence of concurrent tuberculosis in EPTB, and all suspected cases of EPTB should be assessed for concomitant PTB to determine whether the case is infectious and to help for early diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract The chloride/phosphate ratio (Cl/PO4) has been suggested to have a role in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), but the associations between Cl/PO4 combined with ALP level and PHPT has not been well-studied. Our aim was to investigate the predictive value of combination Cl/PO4 with ALP for PHPT. A cross-sectional retrospective analysis was conducted to examine 172 patients diagnosed with PHPT categorized into two groups: normocalcaemic primary hyperparathyroidism (NPHPT) group and hypercalcaemia PHPT group. We found that Cl/PO4 levels and ALP levels in the NPHPT and hypercalcaemia PHPT group were both significantly higher than normal controls. Cl/PO4 and ALP levels were an independent risk factor for PHPT. Cl/PO4 combined with ALP increased the receiver-operating characteristic curves (ROC-AUC) and the diagnostic value in NPHPT and hypercalcaemia PHPT group (0.913; 95% CI, 0.744–1.000 and 0.932; 95% CI, 0.897–0.966, respectively), specificity of 92.8% and sensitivity of 98%. In conclusion, combination Cl/PO4 with ALP might be a low-cost, simple, available predictive marker of PHPT in Chinese individuals, particularly Chinese remote region where the method used to measure PTH cannot be done. Moreover, due to serum calcium level in NPHPT, Cl/PO4 combined with ALP level measurement have great potential to predict significant occurrence of NPHPT.

Abstract Background Recent studies highlight a negative association between total bilirubin concentrations and albuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our study evaluated the relationship between bilirubin concentrations and the prevalence of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in Chinese patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Methods A total of 258 patients with T1DM were recruited and bilirubin concentrations were compared between patients with or without diabetic nephropathy. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between bilirubin concentrations and 24 h urinary microalbumin. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to assess independent risk factors for diabetic nephropathy. Participants were divided into four groups according to the quartile of total bilirubin concentrations (Q1, 0.20–0.60; Q2, 0.60–0.80; Q3, 0.80–1.00; Q4, 1.00–1.90 mg/dL) and the chi-square test was used to compare the prevalence of DN in patients with T1DM. In a free space optical communication system, the beacon light will lose most of its energy after long-distance transmission, and the background light from the universe will strongly interfere with it. The four-quadrant detector (4QD) has been widely used in optical communication systems as a high-precision spot position detection sensor. However, if the light signal falling on the 4QD is too weak, the electrical signal of the output position will be very weak, and it will easily be affected by or even submerged in noise. To solve this problem, we propose a method for improving the spot position detection accuracy. First, we analyzed the solution relationship between the actual position of the spot and the output signal of the 4QD, with a Gaussian spot as the incident light model. The output current signal of the detector was then transimpedance-amplified by an analog circuit and the output voltage signal with noise was digitally filtered. An error compensation factor and the gap size of the detector were introduced into the traditional spot position detection model. High-precision spot position information for the 4QD in a complex environment was then obtained using the improved spot position detection model. Experimental results show that the maximum spot position detection error for this method was only 0.0277 mm, and the root mean square error was 0.0065 mm, when the 4QD was in a high background noise environment. The spot position detection accuracy was significantly improved compared with traditional detection algorithms. Real-time detection can therefore be achieved in practical applications.

Recently, a novel nitrogenated holey two-dimensional material, C _2 N, has been successfully synthesized via a simple wet-chemical reaction. Its merits have drawn much attention from the scientists. However, to the best of our knowledge, few reported works employed C _2 N as photovoltaic materials and the practical solar cells based on C _2 N have not been fabricated in lab. In this work, we carried out simulation using Scaps-1D to investigate the influences of different parameters on the C _2 N based solar cell. By varying the acceptor density, layer thickness, defect density of C _2 N and changing different N layers coupling with C _2 N, we found out that suitable acceptor density, around 10 ^15 cm ^−3 , large layer thickness of C _2 N and low defect density were key factors to obtain high-performance solar cells. Small band offset also played an importance role in enhancing the performance of photovoltaic materials. With optimized parameters, C _2 N coupling with CdS as heterojunction can achieve an efficiency of over 17%. This work may provide valuable insights into future design of C _2 N based solar cells.

Background/Aims: Pioglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ activator, is clinically used to treat insulin resistance. However, the underlying mechanism of pioglitazone's action remains unclear. We investigated whether, and how, pioglitazone modulates serum level of retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4), an adipocytokine associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Methods: Insulin sensitivity was determined by oral glucose tolerance test, and RBP4 expression was detected by RT-PCR and Western blotting. Results: Pioglitazone treatment significantly decreased serum RBP4 levels in obese rats, which was correlated with reduced body weight and increased insulin sensitivity. Moreover, pioglitazone greatly decreased RBP4 mRNA and protein levels in adipose tissue but not in the liver. Consistently, pioglitazone treatment significantly reduced RBP4 protein expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes but not in HepG2 cells. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that pioglitazone inhibits the level of serum RPB4 by suppressing RBP4 expression in adipose tissue of obese rats, suggesting that inhibiting RBP4 expression in adipocytes may provide a mechanism by which pioglitazone improves insulin sensitivity in insulin-resistant subjects.

In this work, we have developed a modified way of mechanical exfoliation for making two-dimensional materials by introducing a home-designed exfoliation machine. Optical microscopy was employed to identify the thin-layer (mono- and few-layer) flakes primarily. To testify the high efficiency of our modified exfoliation method, we did a simple statistical work on the exfoliation of graphene and WSe2. Further, we used the Raman spectroscopy and the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to characterize the samples. The results indicated the high quality of the as-fabricated samples. Finally, we developed an exfoliation technique for working with easily oxidizing samples. Our modified exfoliation method would be intriguing and innovative for fabricating two dimensional materials, providing a facile way for making electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Glucagon regulates glucose homeostasis by controlling glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver. Exaggerated and dysregulated glucagon secretion can exacerbate hyperglycemia contributing to type 2 diabetes (T2D). Thus, it is important to understand how glucagon receptor (GCGR) activity and signaling is controlled in hepatocytes. To better understand this, we sought to identify proteins that interact with the GCGR to affect ligand-dependent receptor activation. A Flag-tagged human GCGR was recombinantly expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, and GCGR complexes were isolated by affinity purification (AP). Complexes were then analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS), and protein-GCGR interactions were validated by co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) and Western blot. This was followed by studies in primary hepatocytes to assess the effects of each interactor on glucagon-dependent glucose production and intracellular cAMP accumulation, and then in immortalized CHO and liver cell lines to further examine cell signaling. Thirty-three unique interactors were identified from the AP-MS screening of GCGR expressing CHO cells in both glucagon liganded and unliganded states. These studies revealed a particularly robust interaction between GCGR and 5 proteins, further validated by Co-IP, Western blot and qPCR. Overexpression of selected interactors in mouse hepatocytes indicated that two interactors, LDLR and TMED2, significantly enhanced glucagon-stimulated glucose production, while YWHAB inhibited glucose production. This was mirrored with glucagon-stimulated cAMP production, with LDLR and TMED2 enhancing and YWHAB inhibiting cAMP accumulation. To further link these interactors to glucose production, key gluconeogenic genes were assessed. Both LDLR and TMED2 stimulated while YWHAB inhibited PEPCK and G6Pase gene expression. In the present study, we have probed the GCGR interactome and found three novel GCGR interactors that control glucagon-stimulated glucose production by modulating cAMP accumulation and genes that control gluconeogenesis. These interactors may be useful targets to control glucose homeostasis in T2D.
