18. Discovering and Assessing Enterprise Architecture Debts

Abstract

The term Enterprise Architecture (EA) Debts has been coined to grasp the difference between the actual state of the EA and its hypothetical, optimal state. So far, different methods have been proposed to identify such EA Debts in organizations. However, these methods either are based on the transfer of known concepts from other domains to EA or are time and resource intensive. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose an approach that uses an interview format to identify EA Debts in enterprises and a method that allows a qualitative assessment of identified EA Debts. The proposed approach is supported by the designed framework that consists of an interview format and a process for determining thresholds of certain EA Smells.

22. Action learning for change management in digital transformation.

Abstract

This article examines the use of action learning (AL) as a teaching method for change management in higher education. The authors present a case study conducted at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, where AL was used to simulate a change situation during digital transformation. The study found that integrating work and learning through AL, with the help of external facilitators, led to successful learning outcomes. The authors suggest that AL could be integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning, emphasizing the importance of smaller group settings, external facilitators, and clear communication. Das Verhältnis zu Religion und zu den Religionen wird zurecht wieder neu als eine gesellschaftliche'Gretchenfrage'wahrgenommen. Die lange im Westen angenommene'Säkularisierungsthese'vom allmählichen Verschwinden des Religiösen aus dem gesellschaftlichen Leben hat sich nicht bewahrheitet, so dass die Selbstverständigung über seine Bedeutung und die Neubesinnung auf sein Verhältnis zur Gesellschaft neue Dringlichkeit gewinnt. Das gilt im Blick auf religiöse Vielfalt und unterschiedliche Vorstellungen von Gesellschaft und Politik ebenso, wie für die grundsätzliche Rolle von Transzendenz für die Menschenwürde und die Grundlagen des Zusammenlebens. Abstract

Manufacturing enterprises are faced with an increasing global competition and dynamic markets. This development results in a need for more flexible manufacturing structures and the ability for global collaboration. In the curse of this, cross-functional information systems turn into an essential competitive factor. However, the analysis and the integration of an enterprise's core functions is a major challenge. A model-centric approach, namely, multi-perspective enterprise modelling, is an appropriate conceptual instrument to overcome those gaps. Enterprise modelling is widely regarded as an appropriate tool to support analysing, designing and managing corporate information systems. In the paper at hand, we propose an approach fostering the applicability of enterprise models by offering domain-specific concepts. These modelling concepts reflect domain-specific concepts, which are well-known to manufacturing people. Hence, they are particularly suitable for supporting specific analyses, as well as information systems' development.

41. A Method for the Sustainable Documentation of Operations Processes in Parcel Distribution Centers

Abstract

There is often no common understanding on operational processes in logistics companies as they are not properly documented. Hence, people execute the same process differently and training is conducted by experienced operators on an ad-hoc basis. Furthermore, continuous process improvement is hampered as neither the ideal process nor current issues in as-is processes are visible. A major reason for the missing documentation is the complexity of existing business process modelling languages. Modelling experts are required for initially describing the processes and also for updating the models after process changes. Furthermore, operations people are usually not used to read complex process models in EPCs or BPMN diagrams. In order to overcome these limitations, a domain-specific modelling language which facilitates maintaining up-to-date process models has been designed with a large logistics company in Germany. The paper at hand briefly describes this language and illustrates the method on how to apply it in operations environments.

46. A Macroeconomic Analysis of Energy Subsidies in a Small Open Economy

Abstract

We construct a dynamic model of a small open economy to analyze the effects of large energy subsidies. The model includes domestic energy production and consumption, trade in energy at world market prices, as well as private and public sector production. The model is calibrated to Egypt and used to study reforms such as reductions in energy subsidies with corresponding reductions in various tax instruments or increases in infrastructure investment. We calculate the new steady states, transition paths to the new steady state and the size of the associated welfare losses or gains. Our main results for a 15 percent cut in energy subsidies are: (i) Steady state GDP drops in most of our experiments as less energy is used in production. (ii) Steady state consumption rises in most of our experiments. (iii) Welfare can rise by as much as 0.6 percent in consumption equivalent terms. (iv) The largest gains in terms of output and of welfare can be obtained when savings from energy subsidy cuts are used to fund additional infrastructure investment.
