Background/Purpose: Efforts were made to explore the influence of diagnostic timing for cancer-associated thromboembolic events on survival of ovarian cancer patients. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 75 ovarian cancer patients with thromboembolism and evaluated the prognostic factors affecting disease-free survival and overall survival. Results: These 75 patients were classified into two categories by the diagnostic timing of the thromboembolism, during (33 cases) and after (42 cases) initial diagnosis of ovarian cancer groups. The diagnostic timing of thromboembolism was not related to disease-free survival or overall survival of the studied population. Advanced disease stage, clear cell histology, interval debulking surgery, no recurrence/persistence of ovarian cancer, and patients treated with anticoagulant(s) treatment >3 months were associated with the disease-free survival. Advanced disease stage, clear cell histology, body mass index (BMI) ≥24 kg/m2 at the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and no recurrence/persistence of ovarian cancer influenced the overall survival. In the subgroup analysis, compared to the after initial ovarian cancer diagnosis group, patients with stage I/II disease, BMI

Neoplasms. Tumors. Oncology. Including cancer and carcinogens ,RC254-282 - Abstract
Background Expression of immune checkpoints in the tumor microenvironment is one mechanism underlying paclitaxel (PTX) chemoresistance. This study aimed to investigate whether the addition of checkpoint blockade to PTX can improve the therapeutic efficacy against apparently disseminated intraperitoneal tumors. Methods We analyzed the in vivo expression of various immune checkpoints in CD3+CD8+ cytotoxic T cells from tumor-bearing mice treated with or without PTX and validated the tumor-killing activities of selected checkpoint-expressing T-cell subpopulations ex vivo. The regulation of selected checkpoints was investigated in vitro. The therapeutic effects of inhibition of a targeted checkpoint pathway with antibodies added to PTX therapy were examined. Results CD3+CD8+ T cells expressed with herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM), programmed cell death 1 (PD-1), and T-cell immunoglobulin domain and mucin domain 3 (TIM-3) in tumor-bearing hosts treated with PTX had effective tumoricidal activities. In addition to PTX and cytokines, B and T lymphocyte attenuator (BTLA) or homologous to lymphotoxin, exhibits inducible expression and competes with herpes simplex virus (HSV) glycoprotein D for binding to HVEM, a receptor expressed on T lymphocytes (LIGHT) interacting with HVEM can regulate the expression of PD-1 on CD3+CD8+ T cells. Interleukin (IL)-15 increased the percentage of HVEMhighgranzyme B (GZMB)+ cells among CD3+CD8+ T cells, which was suppressed by the BTLA/HVEM signal. LIGHT induced the percentage of HVEM+GZMB+ cells but not HVEMhighGZMB+ cells among CD3+CD8+ T cells. Expression of IL-15, BTLA, or LIGHT was detected in CD19+ B cells and regulated by damage-associated molecular patterns/Toll-like receptor interactions. In the tumor-bearing hosts treated with PTX, certain proportions of BTLA+ B or PD-1+ T lymphocytes were still noted. When dual inhibition of BTLA and PD-1 was added to PTX, the antitumor effects on intraperitoneally disseminated tumors can be significantly improved. Conclusions Dual blockade of BTLA on B cells and PD-1 on cytotoxic T cells may have clinical potential for enhancing the efficacy of PTX in the treatment of tumors with intraperitoneal spread, including epithelial ovarian carcinomas.

Abstract Background The objectives of this research were to gain insights on the interactive effects, by measuring familial and peer-related risk factors in youths with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Methods Participants were college students recruited nationwide, with age between 18 and 25. Through the consensus of expert meetings, a set of questionnaires were used to evaluate the familial status, participant’s peer group conditions, high-risk environment of illicit substance use, and oppositional symptoms. The logistic regression was performed to see the independent and interactive risk factors for ODD. Results A total of 981 subjects were enrolled. Six variables significantly associated with ODD at the multivariate logistic regression, including male, night division, poor academic performance, high risk environment, peer with illicit substance use and high maternal education level. High maternal education exerted independent protective effect on the development of ODD (adjusted odds ratio, aOR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.44–0.99). Peer with illicit substance use was more likely to associate with ODD in the low maternal education group. The 2-way interactive effect of maternal education and peer with substance use on the development of ODD was OR = 4.96 (2.96, 8.31). Conclusion The present study highlights the influence of maternal education level to ODD and its interaction with peer of illicit substance use. Our findings imply that the familial attachment and peer interaction are essential stages for the development of human behavior. Trial registration The research protocol was reviewed and approved by the ethical review committee of National Taiwan University Hospital (number 201505057RINC ) and registered at clinical trial systems at National Taiwan University. In addition, subjects’ information was anonymous and de-identified prior to any analysis.

Medicine ,Science - Abstract
Background/purpose Vaginal delivery, compared with Cesarean delivery, remains a less chosen mode of delivery for twin pregnancy. We studied the maternal and perinatal outcomes of twin pregnancy with different modes of delivery. Methods A retrospective study with data collected from a regional hospital, including vital twin pregnancies delivered at gestational age of 32 weeks and above. Medical charts were reviewed for prenatal conditions and postpartum outcomes. Results Ninety-eight pairs of twins were included and 44.9% were delivered via vaginal delivery. Women in the vaginal delivery group were significantly younger (32.5 ±4.3 years versus 34.8 ±4.6 years, p < 0.01), multiparous (34.1% versus 18.5%) and with more twins in vertex-vertex presentation (70.5% versus 33.3%) compared with women in the Cesarean delivery group. There were no differences between maternal postpartum complications and neonatal outcomes in both groups. The outcomes showed longer inter-twin delivery time interval (5.7 ± 5.6 versus 1.5 ± 0.9 min, p < 0.01), less estimated blood loss (198.7 ± 144.1 versus 763.2 ± 332.3 mL, p < 0.01), and shorter maternal hospital stay (3.0 ± 0.5 versus 5.7 ± 0.5 days, p< 0.01) in the vaginal delivery group. Twenty newborns had Apgar score below seven at birth. Logistic regression analysis revealed that low Apgar score was independently related to younger maternal age, maternal obstetric diseases and fetal non-vertex presentation. Gestational weeks and mode of delivery were not related to low Apgar score. Conclusion With careful case selection, vaginal delivery could be safely performed in twin pregnancies with less estimated blood loss and better recovery than Cesarean delivery.

We study affine semigroup rings as algebras over subsemigroup rings. From this relative viewpoint with respect to a given subsemigroup ring, the fibered sum of two affine semigroup algebras is constructed. Such a construction is compared to the tensor product and to the classical gluings of affine semigroup rings as defined in Rosales (1997). While fibered sum can always be achieved, gluings of affine semigroup rings do not always exist. Therefore, we further investigate when the fibered sum of affine semigroup algebras gives rise to a gluing. A criterion is recovered in terms of the defining semigroups under which the gluing may take place.

An emerging cellular engineering method creates synthetic polymer matrices inside cells. By contrast with classical genetic, enzymatic, or radioactive techniques, this materials-based approach introduces non-natural polymers inside cells, thus modifying cellular states and functionalities. Here, we cover various materials and chemistries that have been exploited to create intracellular polymer matrices. In addition, we discuss emergent cellular properties due to the intracellular polymerization, including nonreplicating but active metabolism, maintenance of membrane integrity, and resistance to environmental stressors. We also discuss past work and future opportunities for developing and applying synthetic cells that contain intracellular polymers. The materials-based approach will usher in new applications of synthetic cells for broad biotechnological applications.

- Abstract
It is well known that teachers' feedback plays an important role in students' learning, as it enhances learners' cognitive development; yet there has been little research on how positive feedback given in the form of emojis works in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) courses. In this study, an experiment was designed to clarify how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' emotions are affected when such feedback is presented (no feedback vs. supraliminal feedback vs. subliminal feedback) and to examine how the feedback correlates with their learning effectiveness. A within-subject experiment with 33 participants was designed and administered to examine three proposed research hypotheses. Participants' frontal asymmetry alpha (FAA) and their recollection of the learning contents were used as the index of their emotional valence and learning effectiveness. The results revealed that positive feedback given in the form of emojis generated a positive/approach emotion when it was shown subliminally. Furthermore, a significant relationship was seen between EFL learners' positive emotion and their learning effectiveness; such a finding was supported by the significant relationship between the modes of emoji presentation and the participants' learning effectiveness. This study's originality and value lies in the innovative research method that was adopted and the interesting findings that it yielded. The limitations of this study such as research design and sampling are reported. The study also has practical and theoretical implications for practitioners and scholars of CALL for praxis and future research.

- Abstract
Camouflaging is a strategy adopted by neurodivergent individuals to cope in neurotypical social contexts, likely related to perceived stress. Despite increasing research in autistic adults, studies of camouflaging in adolescents remain sparse. The self-reported Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire has been validated in adults in some Western societies, but not in non-Western populations. We examined the psychometric properties of the self-reported and caregiver-reported Chinese version Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire in Taiwanese adolescents. We enrolled 100 autistic and 105 non-autistic adolescents (aged 12-18 years) and their caregivers. As an initial development, we found a two-factor structure ("compensation-masking" and "assimilation") via exploratory factor analysis, alongside good internal consistency and test-retest reliability, for both the self-reported and caregiver-reported Chinese version Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire. Self-reported and caregiver-reported Chinese version Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire scores were moderately to highly correlated. Autistic adolescents showed higher total Chinese version Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire and assimilation scores than non-autistic adolescents in both males and females. Female autistic adolescents showed higher assimilation than male autistic adolescents, but there was no significant difference between sex assigned at birth on compensation-masking in either autistic or non-autistic adolescents. Assimilation correlated with higher self-perceived stress for both autistic and non-autistic adolescents. Both self-reported and caregiver-reported Chinese version Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire were reliable and offered meaningful information to understand social coping of Taiwanese autistic and non-autistic adolescents.

- Abstract
Effective professional development is critical for improving implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in special education. The present systematic review sought to gather evidence exploring the effects and key components of in-service special education teacher training in EBPs. This review identifies six essential components of training programs, including didactic presentation, live modeling, video modeling, practical exercise, performance feedback, and on-site coaching. Our findings suggest that training programs containing all or some of these components demonstrated 90% of effectiveness on teachers' outcomes. Specifically, practical exercises and performance feedback are key components to improve the rate of implementing EBPs with sufficient fidelity and on-site coaching is critical for sustaining the outcomes. Recommendations for effective professional development for special education teachers are discussed.

Educational attainment is an important social determinant of maternal, newborn, and child health1-3. As a tool for promoting gender equity, it has gained increasing traction in popular media, international aid strategies, and global agenda-setting4-6. The global health agenda is increasingly focused on evidence of precision public health, which illustrates the subnational distribution of disease and illness7,8; however, an agenda focused on future equity must integrate comparable evidence on the distribution of social determinants of health9-11. Here we expand on the available precision SDG evidence by estimating the subnational distribution of educational attainment, including the proportions of individuals who have completed key levels of schooling, across all low- and middle-income countries from 2000 to 2017. Previous analyses have focused on geographical disparities in average attainment across Africa or for specific countries, but-to our knowledge-no analysis has examined the subnational proportions of individuals who completed specific levels of education across all low- and middle-income countries12-14. By geolocating subnational data for more than 184 million person-years across 528 data sources, we precisely identify inequalities across geography as well as within populations.

We investigate SN 2014C using three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic modeling, focusing on its early interaction with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM). Our objective is to uncover the pre-supernova (SN) CSM structure and constrain the progenitor star’s mass-loss history prior to core collapse. Our comprehensive model traces the evolution from the progenitor star through the SN event and into the SN remnant phase. We simulate the remnant’s expansion over approximately 15 yr, incorporating a CSM derived from the progenitor star’s outflows through dedicated hydrodynamic simulations. Analysis reveals that the remnant interacted with a dense toroidal nebula extending from 4.3 × 10 ^16 to 1.5 × 10 ^17 cm in the equatorial plane, with a thickness of approximately 1.2 × 10 ^17 cm. The nebula’s density peaks at approximately 3 × 10 ^6 cm ^−3 at the inner boundary, gradually decreasing as ≈ r ^−2 at greater distances. This nebula formed due to intense mass loss from the progenitor star between approximately 5000 and 1000 yr before collapse. During this period, the maximum mass-loss rate reached about 8 × 10 ^−4 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , ejecting ≈2.5 M _⊙ of stellar material into the CSM. Our model accurately reproduces Chandra and NuSTAR spectra, including the iron (Fe) K line, throughout the remnant’s evolution. Notably, the Fe line is self-consistently reproduced, originating from shocked ejecta, with ≈0.05 M _⊙ of pure-Fe ejecta shocked during the remnant–nebula interaction. These findings suggest that the 3D geometry and density distribution of the CSM, as well as the progenitor star’s mass-loss history, align with a scenario where the star was stripped through binary interaction, specifically common-envelope evolution.

Purpose of reviewThe purpose of this review is to highlight recent research advances in noninvasive prenatal diagnostic methods.Recent findingsRecent studies developing noninvasive prenatal diagnostic (NIPD) methods have been focused on either fetal nucleated red blood cells (fNRBCs) or circulating trophoblasts (cTBs). Enriched cTBs were successfully utilized for whole genome profiling and short tandem repeat (STR) identification to confirm feto-maternal relationship. However, further analysis of isolated fNRBCs remains confined to examining fetal cytogenetics.SummaryInvasive prenatal diagnostic procedures, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, are the gold standard for the diagnosis of fetal chromosomal abnormalities and genetic disorders. Meanwhile, noninvasive techniques of analyzing circulating cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) have been limited to screening tools and are highly fragmented and confounded by maternal DNA. By detecting circulating fetal nucleated cells (CFNCs) we are able to noninvasively confirm fetal chromosomal abnormalities, truly realizing the concept of "noninvasive prenatal diagnostics". The primary technical challenge is the enrichment of the low abundance of CFNCs in maternal peripheral blood. For any cell-based NIPD method, both fetal whole genome profiling and confirmation of the feto-parental relationship are essential. This has been successfully performed using enriched and isolated cTBs, making cTB a better candidate for NIPD. cTB enumeration also correlates with abnormal fetal or placental development. On the other hand, downstream analysis of fNRBCs remains limited to examining fetal sex and aneuploidies. Furthermore, trophoblast-based NIPD via an endocervical sample is also promising because of reduced dilution from hematologic cells.

Science - Abstract
Abstract Early cancer detection by cell-free DNA faces multiple challenges: low fraction of tumor cell-free DNA, molecular heterogeneity of cancer, and sample sizes that are not sufficient to reflect diverse patient populations. Here, we develop a cancer detection approach to address these challenges. It consists of an assay, cfMethyl-Seq, for cost-effective sequencing of the cell-free DNA methylome (with > 12-fold enrichment over whole genome bisulfite sequencing in CpG islands), and a computational method to extract methylation information and diagnose patients. Applying our approach to 408 colon, liver, lung, and stomach cancer patients and controls, at 97.9% specificity we achieve 80.7% and 74.5% sensitivity in detecting all-stage and early-stage cancer, and 89.1% and 85.0% accuracy for locating tissue-of-origin of all-stage and early-stage cancer, respectively. Our approach cost-effectively retains methylome profiles of cancer abnormalities, allowing us to learn new features and expand to other cancer types as training cohorts grow.
