Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a subclass of non-coding RNAs that play a critical role in regulating gene expression in eukaryotic organisms. Recent studies have revealed the critical role of circRNAs in cancer progression. However, there are few studies on the function of hsa-circ-0064636 in osteosarcoma (OS).Methods: The differential expression of hsa-circ-0064636 in OS cell lines was detected by [1] quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Differentially expressed mRNAs and miRNAs were screened in OS mRNA and miRNA expression datasets. MiRNAs that interacted with hsa-circ-0064636 were predicted by RNAhybrid, TargetScan and miRanda, and were further detected using RNAhybrid, TargetScan and miRanda. MiRWalk, miRMap, and miRNAMap were used to perform target gene prediction on the intersected miRNAs to construct a circ-miRNA-mRNA interactor network. The target genes were then subjected to survival analysis using PROGgeneV2, and then a circ-miRNA-mRNA interaction subnetwork was formed, and the prognostic impact of target genes was revealed.[2] Results: The qRT-PCR experiments showed that hsa-circ-0064636 was significantly overexpressed in the OS cell lines. Hsa-mir-326(miR-326) and hsa-mir-503-5p(miR-503-5p) are targeting miRNAs of hsa-circ-0064636 in the target genes obtained from the miR-326 and miR-503-5p screens. UBE4A and VDAC1 have a significant effect on prognosis. UBE4A is a target gene of miR-326, while VDAC1 is a target gene of miR-503-5p.Conclusion: Hsa-circ-0064636 may be involved in OS development by inhibiting the expression of miR-326 and miR-503-5p, thus regulating that of VDAC1 and UBE4A.

This study constructed an up-flow anaerobic column reactor fed with synthetic sulfate-rich cadmium (Cd(II))-bearing wastewater, for investigating its Cd(II) removal performance and mechanism. Long-term experiment results manifest that introducing Cd(II) into influent led to an enhanced sulfate removal but did not increase the effluent sulfide concentration, implying the CdS formation. When influent Cd(II) concentration was shifted from 50 to 100 mg/L, the median Cd(II) removal rate was increased from 13.6 to 32.2 mg/(L·d). Batch tests indicate that the uptake and sequestration function of anaerobes merely led to a small portion of Cd(II) removal. A majority of aqueous Cd(II) (86.3%) was eliminated by precipitation reactions. The generated precipitates were found to be dominantly presented in carbonate, Fe-Mn oxide, sulfide bound and residue forms, which account for 92.6-93.9% of total Cd content of sludge obtained at diverse operation phases. The crystallographic CdS (i.e., residue fraction) particles have nano-scale sizes, and the relatively high atomic ratio of S to Cd was likely due to the adsorption/deposition of other sulfides. The dominant sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were recognized as Desulfurella, Desulforhabdus and Desulfovibrio, and the primary competitor with them for substrate utilization were identified to be methanogens.

The occurrence of micropollutants (MPs) in water and wastewater imposes potential risks on ecological security and human health. Membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR), as an emerging technology, has attracted much attention for MPs removal from water and wastewater. The review aims to consolidate the recent advances in membrane biofilm reactor for MPs removal from the standpoint of fundamentals, removal performance and microbial communities. First, the configuration and working principles of MBfRs are reviewed prior to the discussion of the current status of the system. Thereafter, a comprehensive review of the MBfR performance for MPs elimination based on literature database is presented. Key information on the microbial communities that are of great significance for the removal performance is then synthesized. Perspectives on the future research needs are also provided in this review to ensure the development of MBfRs for more cost-effective elimination of MPs from water and wastewater.

The deficiency of available silicon (Si) incurred by year-round agricultural and horticultural practices highlights the significance of Si fertilization for soil replenishment. This study focuses on a novel and economical route for the synthesis of Si fertilizer via the calcination method using talc and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as starting materials. The molar ratio of talc to CaCO3 of 1:2.0, calcination temperature of 1150 °C and calcination time of 120 min were identified as the optimal conditions to maximize the available Si content of the prepared Si fertilizer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterizations elucidate the principles of the calcination temperature-dependent microstructure evolution of Si fertilizers, and the akermanite Ca2Mg(Si2O7) and merwinite Ca3Mg(SiO4)2 were identified as the primary silicates products. The results of release and solubility experiments suggest the content of available metallic element and slow-release property of the Si fertilizer obtained at the optimum preparation condition (Si-OPC). The surface morphology and properties of Si-OPC were illuminated by the results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface area and nitrogen adsorption analysis. The acceleration action of CaCO3 in the decomposition process of talc was demonstrated by the thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) test. The pot experiment corroborates that 5 g kg−1 soil Si-OPC application sufficed to facilitate the pakchoi growth by providing nutrient elements. This evidence indicates the prepared Si fertilizer as a promising candidate for Si-deficient soil replenishment.

Although cellulose hydrogels are one of promising biomaterials for drug release carrier, their passive manner of drug release and the absence of remote stimuli response limit their further applications. Herein, we report a simple one-pot method for the synthesis of magnetic β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/cellulose hydrogel beads, which exhibited rapid swelling–deswelling properties under an external magnetic field (EMF) to remotely control drug release from passive release to stepwise release. The grafted β-CD endows the hydrogel with high drug loading capacity and, simultaneously, the incorporation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles provide the force for stepwise drug release through EMF induced rapid and reversible deformation of 3D network. We demonstrate that the efficiency of the hydrogel in the stepwise drug release dose and rate can be controlled by switching on–off the EMF and adjusting the content of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Additionally, results from cytotoxicity tests confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of the developed hydrogel, which is promising to be used in the biomedical field.

Membrane fouling remains as a critical issue limiting the widespread applications of membrane-based technologies for water and wastewater treatment. In this work, an electrochemical ceramic membrane reactor (ECMR), in which ceramic membrane with built-in Ti mesh acted as cathode/filter and Ti/SnO2-Sb-Ce as anodes, was developed for mitigating membrane fouling during wastewater treatment. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of Ti/SnO2-Sb-Ce electrode demonstrated favorable electrochemical properties. Filtration tests with influent wastewater containing 50 mg/L sodium alginate (SA) showed that TMP increase rate for the ECMR was decreased by 23.9–72.7% compared to the control, dependent on the exertion modes of electric field in this reactor. It was found that all the oxidants contributed to the enhanced antifouling performance of the ECMR due to in-situ membrane cleaning effects while the hydrogen peroxide and active chlorine (ClT) played a more important role compared to superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals. SA was oxidized to a smaller size after reacting with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ClT, benefiting the mitigation of membrane fouling in ECMR.

An electrochemical membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (EMABR) was developed for removing sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) from contaminated water. The exertion of electric field greatly enhanced the degradation of SMX and TMP in the EMABR (~60%) compared to membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR,10%), due to the synergistic effects of the electro-oxidation (the generation of reactive oxygen species) and biological degradation. Microbial community analyses demonstrated that the EMABR enriched the genus of Xanthobacter, which was potentially capable of degrading aromatic intermediates. Moreover, the EMABR had a lower relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (0.23) compared to the MABR (0.56), suggesting the suppression of ARGs in the EMABR. Further, the SMX and TMP degradation pathways were proposed based on the detection of key intermediate products. This study demonstrated the potential of EMABR as an effective technology for removing antibiotics from micro-polluted surface water and suppressing the development of ARGs.

The back-diffusion of inactive gases severely inhibits the hydrogen (H2) delivery rate of the close-end operated hydrogen-based membrane biofilm reactor (H2-based MBfR). Nevertheless, less is known about the response of microbial communities in H2-based MBfR to the impact of the gases&rsquo, back-diffusion. In this research, the denitrification performance and microbial dynamics were studied in a H2-based MBfR operated at close-end mode with a fixed H2 pressure of 0.04 MPa and fed with nitrate (NO3&minus, ) containing influent. Results of single-factor and microsensor measurement experiments indicate that the H2 availability was the decisive factor that limits NO3&minus, removal at the influent NO3&minus, concentration of 30 mg N/L. High-throughput sequencing results revealed that (1) the increase of NO3&minus, loading from 10 to 20&ndash, 30 mg N/L resulted in the shift of dominant functional bacteria from Dechloromonas to Hydrogenophaga in the biofilm, (2) excessive NO3&minus, loading led to the declined relative abundance of Hydrogenophaga and basic metabolic pathways as well as counts of most denitrifying enzyme genes, and (3) in most cases, the decreased quantity of N metabolism-related functional bacteria and genes with increasing distance from the H2 supply end corroborates that the microbial community structure in H2-based MBfR was significantly impacted by the gases&rsquo, back-diffusion.

An electrochemical ceramic microfiltration membrane with built-in cathode (Ti mesh) and Ti/RuO2 anode, which had dual functions of separation and electrochemical oxidation, was developed for p-chloroaniline (PCA) removal from contaminated waters. Results showed that the degradation of PCA followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics in all conditions. PCA degradation efficiency increased with the increase of applied voltages in the range of 0–3.0 V. The optimum solution pH for PCA decay was 7.0. An initial PCA concentration higher than 30 μM had no significant influence (p > 0.05) on the degradation efficiency of PCA. At an applied voltage of 2.0 V and an electrolysis time/hydraulic retention time of 2 h, the removal efficiency of PCA under flow-through mode was found to be 3.6 times that of flow-by mode, due to the better contact and reaction of contaminants with the oxidants generated in the vicinity of membrane surface. It also showed that OH arisen from anodic water oxidation reaction played a key role in PCA degradation. Benzoquinone, aniline, p-aminophenol, hydroquinone, malonic acid, succinic acid, oxamic acid, maleic acid, oxalic acid, α-ketoglutaric acid and formic acid were identified as the main PCA decay products, leading to a lower biological toxicity of the effluent. The system also demonstrated a favorable performance for contaminant elimination after a long-term operation. These results highlight the potential of this electrochemical microfiltration membrane system for efficient PCA degradation.

Inability to remove low-molecular-weight anthropogenic contaminants is a critical issue in low-pressure membrane filtration processes for water treatment. In this work, a novel electrochemical ceramic membrane filtration (ECMF) system using TiO2@SnO2–Sb anode was developed for removing persistent p-chloroaniline (PCA). Results showed that the ECMF system achieved efficient removal of PCA from contaminated waters. At a charging voltage of 3 V, the PCA removal rate of TiO2@SnO2–Sb ECMF system under flow-through mode was 2.4 times that of flow-by mode. The energy consumption for 50% of PCA removal for TiO2@SnO2–Sb ECMF at 3 V under flow-through mode was 0.38 Wh/L, much lower than that of flow-by operation (1.5 Wh/L), which was attributed to the improved utilization of the surface adsorbed HO· and dissociated HO· driven by the enhanced mass transfer of PCA toward the anode surface. Removal of recalcitrant anthropogenic contaminants from water calls for the development of cost-effective treatment technologies. In this work, a novel electrochemical membrane filtration (EMF) process using a conducting microfiltration membrane as the cathode has been developed and the degradation of sulphanilic acid (SA) examined. The electrochemical degradation of SA in flow-by mode followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with the degradation rate enhanced with increase in charging voltage. Hydrogen peroxide as well as oxidants such as HO• and Fe(IV)O2+ were generated electrochemically with HO• found to be the dominant oxidant responsible for SA degradation. In addition to the anodic splitting of water, HO• was formed via a heterogeneous Fenton process with surface-bound Fe(II) resulting from aerobic corrosion of the steel mesh. An electrochemical dynamic membrane filtration (EDMF) system for simultaneous solid-liquid separation (also protecting electrodes against fouling) and sewage disinfection was developed. At a low voltage of 2.5 V, efficient disinfection performance was achieved in the EDMF, with ~100% log removal efficiency (no detectable bacteria in the effluent). Results also demonstrated that the EDMF system, operated at membrane flux of 100 L/(m2 h), could maintain long-lasting bacterial disinfection efficiency of real wastewater (~100% log removal) in continuous flow tests. Transmembrane pressure (TMP) increased from 0.8 kPa to 22 kPa within 80 d (one operation cycle), and cleaning of EDMF could effectively restore TMP and biocidal behaviors for subsequent filtration cycles. In contrast, without dynamic membrane, the disinfection efficiency was decreased from initial ~100% log removal (with no detectable live bacteria) to ~44.4% log removal within 7 d. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidation was responsible for bacteria disinfection in the EDMF, and HO• and H2O2 generated in this system played a dominant role, causing damage to cell membranes and K+ leakage from cytosol. Moreover, catalase and superoxide dismutase for intracellular ROS attenuation were inhibited, resulting in the increase of intracellular oxidative stress and thus high-efficient disinfection. These results highlight the potential of EDMF system to be used for wastewater treatment and disinfection.

The H2-based membrane biofilm reactor (H2−MBfR) is an emerging technology for removal of nitrate (NO3−) in water supplies. In this research, a lab-scale H2−MBfR equipped with a separated CO2 providing system and a microsensor measuring unit was developed for NO3− removal from synthetic groundwater. Experimental results show that efficient NO3− reduction with a flux of 1.46 g/(m2⋅d) was achieved at the optimal operating conditions of hydraulic retention time (HRT) 80 min, influent NO3− concentration 20 mg N/L, H2 pressure 5 psig and CO2 addition 50 mg/L. Given the complex counter-diffusion of substrates in the H2−MBfR, mathematical modeling is a key tool to both understand its behavior and optimize its performance. A sophisticated model was successfully established, calibrated and validated via comparing the measured and simulated system performance and/or substrate gradients within biofilm. Model results indicate that i) even under the optimal operating conditions, denitrifying bacteria (DNB) in the interior and exterior of biofilm suffered low growth rate, attributed to CO2 and H2 limitation, respectively; ii) appropriate operating parameters are essential to maintaining high activity of DNB in the biofilm; iii) CO2 concentration was the decisive factor which matters its dominant role in mediating hydrogenotrophic denitrification process; iv) the predicted optimum biofilm thickness was 650 µm that can maximize the denitrification flux and prevent loss of H2.

Removal of sulfanilic acid (SA) from water is an urgent but still challenging task. Herein, we developed a low pressure electrochemical membrane filtration (EMF) system for SA decontamination using RuO2-TiO2@Ti/PVDF composite membrane to serve as not only a filter but also an anode. Results showed that efficient removal of SA was achieved in this EMF system. At a charging voltage of 1.5 V and a electrolyte concentration of 15 mM, flow-through operation with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2 h led to a high SA removal efficiency (80.4%), as expected from the improved contact reaction of this compound with ROS present at the anode surface. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis indicated that the direct anodic oxidation played a minor role in SA degradation. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra demonstrated the production of •OH in the EMF system. Compared to the cathodic polarization, anodic generated ROS was more likely responsible for SA removal. Scavenging tests suggested that adsorbed •OH on the anode (>•OH) played a dominant role in SA degradation, while O2•- was an important intermediate oxidant which mediated the production of •OH. The calculated mineralization current efficiency (MCE) of the flow-through operated system 29.3% with this value much higher than that of the flow-by mode (5.1%). As a consequence, flow-through operation contributed to efficient oxidation of SA toward CO2 and nontoxic carboxylic acids accounting for 71.2% of initial C. These results demonstrate the potential of the EMF system to be used as an effective technology for water decontamination.

Recovery of nutrients and energy from municipal wastewater has attracted much attention in recent years; however, its efficiency is significantly limited by the low-strength properties of municipal wastewater. Herein, we report a pilot-scale forward osmosis (FO) system using a spiral-wound membrane module to concentrate real municipal wastewater. Under active layer facing feed solution mode, the critical concentration factor (CCF) of this FO system was determined to be 8 with 0.5 M NaCl as draw solution. During long-term operation at a concentration factor of 5, (99.8 ± 0.6)% of chemical oxygen demand and (99.7 ± 0.5)% of total phosphorus rejection rates could be achieved at a flux of 6 L/(m2 h) on average. In comparison, only (48.1 ± 10.5)% and (67.8 ± 7.3)% rejection of ammonium and total nitrogen were observed. Cake enhanced concentration polarization is a major contributor to the decrease of water fluxes. The fouling also led to the occurrence of a cake reduced concentration polarization effect, improving ammonium rejection rate with the increase of operation time in each cycle. This work demonstrates the applicability of using FO process for wastewater concentrating and also limitations in ammonium recovery that need further improvement in future.

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) has become a growing concern due to its contribution to eutrophication and nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) formation. However, information of DON in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) is very limited. In this study, occurrence, transformation and fate of DON in an MBR system were systematically investigated. MBR sludge showed a larger hydrolysis rate of particle organic nitrogen (PON) and also a higher transformation rate of DON to nitrate compared to conventional activated sludge (CAS). For long-term experiments, MBR achieved higher DON removal efficiency at low temperature than CAS; however, at high temperature, the effluent DON concentrations were almost the same in both systems. Batch tests on DON biodegradability showed that DON concentration increased and large molecular weight DON accumulated after 3-h aeration at low temperature, while DON concentration continuously decreased with the increase of aeration time at high temperature. The obtained results provide insights in DON removal in MBRs for meeting increasingly stringent regulations in terms of nitrogen removal.
