This article analyzes the existing translation of Yuan Ke’s “Myths of Ancient China” (1960), carried out by E. I. Lubo-Lesnichenko and E. V. Puzitsky (1965), focusing on the strategies employed by the translators in conveying Chinese names into Russian in instances of cultural gaps. The aim of the article is to summarize the strategies adhered to by the authors in translating Chinese mythological narratives and to identify the most suitable methods for rendering names of material culture objects into Russian. An assessment is provided regarding the accuracy of translations of fragments of myths that mention concepts such as “tripod,” “jade hairpin,” “jade tablet,” “Jai-gong, Palace of Abstinence,” and others. The analysis reveals that the methods utilized by translators of ancient Chinese myths primarily include phonetic transliteration, literal translation, addition, omission, and annotation. However, the application of these strategies sometimes results in distortion and omission of the original information. This article proposes translational strategies, within the framework of foreignization, that should be adhered to when translating Chinese mythological narratives: addition, omission, transfer, substitution, division, combination, and transliteration.

Ferroptosis is a non-apoptotic mode of cell death. A large number of studies have confirmed that ferroptosis plays a vital role in the occurrence and development of diabetes and diabetic complications. Previous studies have found that Chinese herbal medicines have very promising results in the prevention and treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications, and some of these herbs or herbal natural compounds may act via the inhibition of ferroptosis. In this review, we summarized the relationship between ferroptosis and diabetes and diabetic complications, and discussed its molecular mechanisms. We also reviewed the published studies of herbal medicines or herbal natural compounds that improved diabetes or diabetic complications via the ferroptosis pathway. In addition, we are trying to provide new insights for better treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications with Chinese herbal medicine and its herbal compounds.

Abstract Diabetic wound (DW) is characterized by elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines and cellular dysfunction consistent with elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Recent advances in immunology have dissected molecular pathways involved in the innate immune system where cytoplasmic DNA can trigger STING-dependent inflammatory responses and play an important role in metabolic-related diseases. We investigated whether STING regulates inflammation and cellular dysfunction in DW healing. We found that STING and M1 macrophages were increased in wound tissues from DW in patients and mice and delayed the wound closure. We also noticed that the massively released ROS in the High glucose (HG) environment activated STING signaling by inducing the escape of mtDNA to the cytoplasm, inducing macrophage polarization into a pro-inflammatory phenotype, releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and exacerbating endothelial cell dysfunction. In Conclusion, mtDNA-cGAS-STING pathway activation under diabetic metabolic stress is an important mechanism of DW refractory healing. While using STING gene-edited macrophages for wound treatment by cell therapy can induce the polarization of wound macrophages from pro-inflammatory M1 to anti-inflammatory M2, promote angiogenesis, and collagen deposition to accelerate DW healing. STING may be a promising therapeutic target for DW.

Aim: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the primary cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Although etiology for DN is complex and still needs to be fully understood, lipid metabolism disorder is found to play a role in it. Previously, we found Yishen Huashi (YSHS) granule could inhibit diabetic damage and reduce level of microalbuminuria (mALB) in DN animals. To explore its role and mechanism in lipid metabolism under DN settings, this study was designed. Materials and methods: DN rats were induced by streptozotocin (STZ), HepG2 and CaCO2 cells were applied for in vitro study. Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE), periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) staining, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were applied for histological observation; 16s Sequencing was used for intestinal microbiota composition analysis; western blotting (WB) and immunofluorescence were carried out for molecular biological study, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for lipid determination. Results: YSHS administration significantly reduced levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), while increased level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C); meanwhile, histological changes and steatosis of the liver was ameliorated, integrity of the intestinal barrier was enhanced, and dysbacteriosis within intestinal lumen was ameliorated. Mechanism study found that YSHS modulated mitophagy within hepatocytes and inhibited mTOR/AMPK/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Conclusion: In conclusion, we found in the present study that YSHS administration could ameliorate lipid metabolism disorder in DN animals, and its modulation on intestinal-liver axis played a significant role in it.

Abstract Background Brain impairment is one of a major complication of diabetes. Dietary flavonoids have been recommended to prevent brain damage. Astragalus membranaceus is a herbal medicine commonly used to relieve the complications of diabetes. Flavonoids is one of the major ingredients of Astragalus membranaceus, but its function and mechanism on diabetic encepholopathy is still unknown. Methods Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) model was induced by high fat diet and STZ in C57BL/6J mice, and BEnd.3 and HT22 cell lines were applied in the in vitro study. Quality of flavonoids was evaluated by LC–MS/MS. Differential expressed proteins in the hippocampus were evaluated by proteomics; influence of the flavonoids on composition of gut microbiota was analyzed by metagenomics. Mechanism of the flavonoids on diabetic encepholopathy was analyzed by Q-PCR, Western Blot, and multi-immunological methods et al. Results We found that flavonoids from Astragalus membranaceus (TFA) significantly ameliorated brain damage by modulating gut-microbiota-brain axis: TFA oral administration decreased fasting blood glucose and food intake, repaired blood brain barrier, protected hippocampus synaptic function; improved hippocampus mitochondrial biosynthesis and energy metabolism; and enriched the intestinal microbiome in high fat diet/STZ-induced diabetic mice. In the in vitro study, we found TFA increased viability of HT22 cells and preserved gut barrier integrity in CaCO2 monocellular layer, and PGC1α/AMPK pathway participated in this process. Conclusion Our findings demonstrated that flavonoids from Astragalus membranaceus ameliorated brain impairment, and its modulation on gut-brain axis plays a pivotal role. Our present study provided an alternative solution on preventing and treating diabetic cognition impairment.

While inflammation is considered a central component in the development in diabetic nephropathy, the mechanism remains unclear. The NLRP3 inflammasome acts as both a sensor and a regulator of the inflammatory response. The NLRP3 inflammasome responds to exogenous and endogenous danger signals, resulting in cleavage of procaspase-1 and activation of cytokines IL-1β, IL-18, and IL-33, ultimately triggering an inflammatory cascade reaction. This study observed the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome signaling stimulated by high glucose, lipopolysaccharide, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) inhibitor N-acetyl-L-cysteine in glomerular mesangial cells, aiming to elucidate the mechanism by which the NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathway may contribute to diabetic nephropathy. We found that the expression of thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP), NLRP3, and IL-1β was observed by immunohistochemistry in vivo. Simultaneously, the mRNA and protein levels of TXNIP, NLRP3, procaspase-1, and IL-1β were significantly induced by high glucose concentration and lipopolysaccharide in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner in vitro. This induction by both high glucose and lipopolysaccharide was significantly inhibited by N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Our results firstly reveal that high glucose and lipopolysaccharide activate ROS/TXNIP/ NLRP3/IL-1β inflammasome signaling in glomerular mesangial cells, suggesting a mechanism by which inflammation may contribute to the development of diabetic nephropathy.

Orthopedic and dental implantations under bacterial infection microenvironment face significant challenges in achieving high-quality bone-implant integration. Designing implant coatings that incorporate both immune defense and anti-inflammation is difficult in conventional single-functional coatings. We introduce a multifunctional nanointerface using a zinc finger-inspired peptide-metal-phenolic nanocoating, designed to enhance implant osseointegration under such conditions. Abaloparatide (ABL), a second-generation anabolic drug for treating osteoporosis, can be integrated into the design of a zinc-phenolic network constructed on the implant surface (ABL@ZnTA). Importantly, the phenolic-coordinated Zn2+ ions in ABL@ZnTA can act as zinc finger motif to co-stabilize the configuration of ABL through multiple molecular interactions, enabling high bioactivity, high loading capacity (1.36 times), and long-term release (>7 days) of ABL. Our results showed that ABL@ZnTA can modulate macrophage polarization from the pro-inflammatory M1 towards the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype, promoting immune osteogenesis with increased OCN, ALP, and SOD 1 expression. Furthermore, the ABL@ZnTA significantly reduces inflammatory fibrous tissue encapsulation and enhances the long-term stability of the implants, indicated by enhanced binding strength (6 times) and functional connectivity (1.5−3 times) in the rat bone defect model infected by S. aureus. Overall, our research offers a nano-enabled synergistic strategy that balances infection defense and osteogenesis promotion in orthopedic and dental implantations.

Abstract Collagen-based biomaterials (CBB) are highly esteemed by researchers in materials science and biomedicine due to their extensive applications across various biomedical disciplines. In recent years, owing to advancements in developmental biology techniques, this superior biomaterial has seen increasing utilization in 3D in vitro tissue culture. Three-dimensional cell cultures, often referred to as organoids, have emerged in response to technological advancements in biomaterials and the growing need in the field of medical research. They serve as important models for simulating normal physiological activities in vivo, addressing limitations in experimental material sources, and resolving ethical issues. In this review, we discuss the material characteristics of CBBs commonly used for organoid culture, integrating aspects such as Matrigel and decellularized ECM as culture matrices. We also analyzed the development prospects and directions of various materials in the context of biology, clinical medicine, and particularly reproductive medicine. Currently, despite the FDA approval and clinical research incorporating numerous CBBs, existing challenges in multiple studies indicate a significant unmet need in the development of key tissue models for both medical research and clinical applications. In summary, CBBs are swiftly broadening their applicability in the realms of organoid nature and medical research, serving as a versatile and high-performing material for 3D in vitro tissue culture. Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have been widely studied owing to the abundant reserves, widespread distribution, and easy extraction of potassium (K) resources. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received a great deal of attention as a key anode material for PIBs owing to its two-dimensional diffusion channels for K+ ions. However, due to its poor electronic conductivity and the huge influence of embedded K+ ions (with a large ionic radius of 3.6 Å) on MoS2 layer, MoS2 anodes exhibit a poor rate performance and easily collapsed structure. To address these issues, the common strategies are enlarging the interlayer spacing to reduce the mechanical strain and increasing the electronic conductivity by adding conductive agents. However, simultaneous implementation of the above strategies by simple methods is currently still a challenge. Herein, MoS2 anodes on reduced graphene oxide (MoS2/rGO) composite were prepared using one-step hydrothermal methods. Owing to the presence of rGO in the synthesis process, MoS2 possesses a unique scaled structure with large layer spacing, and the intrinsic conductivity of MoS2 is proved. As a result, MoS2/rGO composite anodes exhibit a larger rate performance and better cycle stability than that of anodes based on pure MoS2, and the direct mixtures of MoS2 and graphene oxide (MoS2-GO). This work suggests that the composite material of MoS2/rGO has infinite possibilities as a high-quality anode material for PIBs.

In this study, the single factor experiment and the Box-Behnken response surface method were employed to find the optimum process parameters of ultrasonic co-germination on enriching black highland barley polyphenols, and the differences in phenolic acid composition were compared before and after ultrasonic co-germination treatment on the basis. The results showed that the optimal process parameters were obtained with ultrasonic pretreatment power 350 W at 30 ℃ for 25 min, and germination time 64 h. The total phenolic content of black highland barley (688.84±5.30 mg/100 g DW) was the highest under the conditions. The results for phenolic acids showed that the contents of protocatechuic acid (free and bound), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (free), vanillic acid (free), caffeic acid (free), syringic acid (free) and p-coumaric acid (free) were increased significantly in the main phenolic acids, which was 14.49, 1.54, 4.73, 1.67, 1.46, 3.73 and 11.49 times of the untreated group respectively after germination treatment. The contents of homogentisic acid (bound), caffeic acid (bound), p-coumaric acid (bound) and ferulic acid (bound) were increased significantly after ultrasonic co-germination treatment, which was 39.24, 1.09, 1.60 and 1.13 times of the untreated group respectively. The DPPH-scavenging capacity treated with germination and ultrasonic co-germination increased significantly by 11.66% and 21.55%, respectively. In summary, both treatments were effective means for enriching phenolic substances and improving antioxidant activity in black highland barley, and suitable enrichment methods could be selected according to different phenolic acid monomers and forms. This study could provide the reference for further improving the utilization value of black highland barley.

A new stationary-phase, side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxane containing crown ether was developed and used as a stationary phase in capillary gas chromatography. This phase can be easily coated on the fused-silica tubing and possesses a high efficiency and moderate polarity. It exhibits the retention properties of both liquid crystal and crown ether stationary phases and is suitable for the separation of a variety of isomeric compounds.

Abstract The exponentially increasing heat generation in electronic devices, induced by high power density and miniaturization, has become a dominant issue that affects carbon footprint, cost, performance, reliability, and lifespan. Liquid metals (LMs) with high thermal conductivity are promising candidates for effective thermal management yet are facing pump‐out and surface‐spreading issues. Confinement in the form of metallic particles can address these problems, but apparent alloying processes elevate the LM melting point, leading to severely deteriorated stability. Here, we propose a facile and sustainable approach to address these challenges by using a biogenic supramolecular network as an effective diffusion barrier at copper particle‐LM (EGaIn/Cu@TA) interfaces to achieve superior thermal conduction. The supramolecular network promotes LM stability by reducing unfavorable alloying and fluidity transition. The EGaIn/Cu@TA exhibits a record‐high metallic‐mediated thermal conductivity (66.1 W m−1 K−1) and fluidic stability. Moreover, mechanistic studies suggest the enhanced heat flow path after the incorporation of copper particles, generating heat dissipation suitable for computer central processing units, exceeding that of commercial silicone. Our results highlight the prospects of renewable macromolecules isolated from biomass for the rational design of nanointerfaces based on metallic particles and LM, paving a new and sustainable avenue for high‐performance thermal management.

Intestinal diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer originate from inflammation and disruption of mucosal barriers. Polyphenols can mitigate intestinal inflammation through antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and microbiome modulation effects. However, the poor solubility and stability of polyphenols restrict therapeutic delivery. Self‐assembly provides a nanoscale platform to overcome these limitations. Polyphenol‐based nanoparticles (PNPs) are formed via coordination of polyphenols with metals like iron, copper, and zinc based on the catechol/galloyl groups. Templeted assembly with amphiphilic block copolymers can also direct polyphenol self‐assembly into nanostructures. PNPs prepared by these mild, aqueous methods exhibit enhanced stability, pH‐responsive disassembly, high cargo‐loading capacity, and targeted accumulation in inflamed intestinal tissues. PNPs can load with hydrophobic polyphenols, drugs, genes, proteins, or probiotics and demonstrate therapeutic potential in preclinical IBD, colorectal cancer, and microbiome disorder models. Ongoing challenges include augmenting prebiotic effects, multidrug encapsulation, and engineering PNPs as biotherapeutics. Future directions involve tailored polyphenol–polymer covalent assemblies and investigating PNPs interactions with enterocytes, immune cells, and microbiota. Overall, PNPs prepared by facile self‐assembly combine the bioactivities of polyphenols with advanced delivery functionality, presenting new opportunities for combination and microbiota‐based therapies for complex intestinal diseases.

Abstract The production of high-valued organonitrogen chemicals, especially N-heterocycles, requires artificial N2 fixation accompanied by the consumption of fossil resources. To avoid the use of these energy- and resource-intensive processes, we develop a sustainable strategy to convert nitrogen-rich animal biomass into N-heterocycles through a thermochemical conversion process (TCP) under atmospheric pressure. A high percentage of N-heterocycles (87.51%) were obtained after the TCP of bovine skin due to the abundance of nitrogen-containing amino acids (e.g., glycine, proline, and l-hydroxyproline). Animal biomass with more diverse amino acid composition (e.g., muscles) yielded higher concentrations of amines/amides and nitriles after TCP. In addition, by introducing catalysts (KOH for pyrrole and Al2O3 for cyclo-Gly–Pro) to TCP, the production quantities of pyrrole and cyclo-Gly–Pro increased to 30.79 mg g−1 and 38.88 mg g−1, respectively. This approach can be used to convert the significant animal biomass waste generated annually from animal culls into valued organonitrogen chemicals while circumventing NH3-dependent and petrochemical-dependent synthesis routes. New materials for combating bacteria-caused infection and promoting the formation of microvascular networks during wound healing are of vital importance. Although antibiotics can be used to prevent infection, treatments that can disinfect and accelerate wound healing are scarce. Herein, we engineer a coating that is both highly compatible with current wound dressing substrates and capable of simultaneously disinfecting and revascularizing wounds using a metal-phenolic nanoplatform containing an alloyed nanostructured architecture (Ag@Cu-MPNNC). The alloyed nanostructure is formed by the spontaneous co-reduction and catalytic disproportionation reaction of multiple metal ions on a foundation metal-phenolic supramolecular layer. This synergistic presence of metals greatly improves the antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria, while demonstrating negligible cytotoxicity to normal tissue. In infected rat models, the Ag@Cu-MPNNC could kill bacteria efficiently, promoting revascularization and accelerate wound closure with no adverse side effects in infected in vivo models. In other words, this material acts as a combination therapy by inhibiting bacterial invasion and modulating bio-nano interactions in the wound.

Abstract Cell‐based therapies comprising the administration of living cells to patients for direct therapeutic activities have experienced remarkable success in the clinic, of which macrophages hold great potential for targeted drug delivery due to their inherent chemotactic mobility and homing ability to tumors with high efficiency. However, such targeted delivery of drugs through cellular systems remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of balancing high drug‐loading with high accumulations in solid tumors. Herein, a tumor‐targeting cellular drug delivery system (MAGN) by surface engineering of tumor‐homing macrophages (Mφs) with biologically responsive nanosponges is reported. The pores of the nanosponges are blocked with iron‐tannic acid complexes that serve as gatekeepers by holding encapsulated drugs until reaching the acidic tumor microenvironment. Molecular dynamics simulations and interfacial force studies are performed to provide mechanistic insights into the “ON‐OFF” gating effect of the polyphenol‐based supramolecular gatekeepers on the nanosponge channels. The cellular chemotaxis of the Mφ carriers enabled efficient tumor‐targeted delivery of drugs and systemic suppression of tumor burden and lung metastases in vivo. The findings suggest that the MAGN platform offers a versatile strategy to efficiently load therapeutic drugs to treat advanced metastatic cancers with a high loading capacity of various therapeutic drugs.

Abstract In the cloud, users prefer to store their sensitive data in encrypted form. Searching keywords over encrypted data without loss of data confidentiality is an important issue. In 2004, Boneh et al. proposed the first public-key searchable encryption scheme which allows users to search by the private key. However, most existing public-key searchable encryption schemes are vulnerable to keyword guessing attack and can not satisfy multi-ciphertext indistinguishability. In this paper, we construct a secure designated server public-key searchable encryption based on Diffie-Hellman problem. Our security analysis shows that our proposed scheme can resist against keyword guessing attack and provide multi-ciphertext indistinguishability for any adversity. Furthermore, the proposed scheme can achieve multi-trapdoor privacy for external attackers. Moreover, the simulation results between our scheme and previous schemes demonstrate our new scheme is suitable for practical application.

Abstract Periodontitis induced by chronic subgingival infection is a ubiquitous disease that causes systemic inflammatory consequences and poses a negative impact on quality of life. The disease is treated and potentially prevented by patient's self‐care aimed at eliminating the oral pathogens from the region. Currently available products for interdental self‐care, including dental floss and interdental brush, have limited ability to prevent the disease. Here, we report a coated dental floss thread, termed “nanofloss,” which uses polyphenol‐based nanocoating to functionalize the floss thread with therapeutic agents. Multiple therapeutics can be integrated into the nanofloss including antibacterial small molecules and proteins. Flossing with nanofloss‐delivered therapeutic agents to the challenging subgingival region with long‐term retention even against the flushing action of the oral fluid in vivo. Our in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that chlorhexidine gluconate‐loaded nanofloss effectively treats the subgingival infection by Porphyromonas gingivalis. Collectively, the nanofloss offers a promising and easily usable tool for targeted self‐care of subgingival infection against periodontitis.

Abstract Effective chemotherapy delivery for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is limited by drug transport across the blood–brain barrier and poor efficacy of single agents. Polymer–drug conjugates can be used to deliver drug combinations with a ratiometric dosing. However, the behaviors and effectiveness of this system have never been well investigated in GBM models. Here, we report flexible conjugates of hyaluronic acid (HA) with camptothecin (CPT) and doxorubicin (DOX) delivered into the brain using focused ultrasound (FUS). In vitro toxicity assays reveal that DOX‐CPT exhibited synergistic action against GBM in a ratio‐dependent manner when delivered as HA conjugates. FUS is employed to improve penetration of DOX‐HA‐CPT conjugates into the brain in vivo in a murine GBM model. Small‐angle x‐ray scattering characterizations of the conjugates show that the DOX:CPT ratio affects the polymer chain flexibility. Conjugates with the highest flexibility yield the highest efficacy in treating mouse GBM in vivo. Our results demonstrate the association of FUS‐enhanced delivery of combination chemotherapy and the drug‐ratio‐dependent flexibility of the HA conjugates. Drug ratio in the polymer nanocomplex may thus be employed as a key factor to modulate FUS drug delivery efficiency via controlling the polymer flexibility. Our characterizations also highlight the significance of understanding the flexibility of drug carriers in ultrasound‐mediated drug delivery systems.

Summary: Traditional techniques for pollutant removal (e.g., static absorption and membrane nanofiltration) are either time consuming or energy intensive with limited permeances. Here, we demonstrate a protocol to fabricate polyamide (PA)-based regenerable adsorption-based membranes (PArab) for ultrafast removal of antibiotics. This protocol describes how to determine the distribution of nanocoatings through the membrane. Abstract Extracellular matrix (ECM) is characterized as widespread, abundant, and pluripotent. Among ECM members, collagen is widely accepted as one of the most prominent components for its essential structural property that can provide a scaffold for other components of ECM and the rich biological functions, which has been extensively used in tissue engineering. Emerging evidence has shown that the balance of ECM degradation and remodeling is vital to regulations of maternal–fetal interface including menstrual cycling, decidualization, embryo implantation and pregnancy maintenance. Moreover, disorders in these events may eventually lead to failure of pregnancy. Although the improvement of assisted conception and embryo culture technologies bring hope to many infertile couples, some unfavorable outcomes, such as recurrent implantation failure (RIF), recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) or recurrent miscarriage (RM), keep troubling the clinicians and patients. Recently, in vitro three-dimensional (3D) model mimicking the microenvironment of the maternal–fetal interface is developed to investigate the physiological and pathological conditions of conception and pregnancy. The progress of this technology is based on clarifying the role of ECM in the endometrium and the interaction between endometrium and conceptus. Focusing on collagen, the present review summarized the degradation and regulation of ECM and its role in normal menstruation, endometrium receptivity and unsatisfying events occurring in infertility treatments, as well as the application in therapeutic approaches to improve pregnancy outcomes. More investigations about ECM focusing on the maternal–fetal interface interaction with mesenchymal stem cells or local immunoregulation may inspire new thoughts and advancements in the clinical application of infertility treatments. Abstract The development of antimicrobial fabrics and textiles that can sustainably inhibit a broad spectrum of microbes is crucial for protecting against pathogens in various environments. Abstract Collagen, the main component of mammal skin, has been traditionally used in leather manufacturing for thousands of years due to its diverse physicochemical properties. Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals and the main component of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The properties of collagen also make it an ideal building block for the engineering of materials for a range of biomedical applications. Reproductive medicine, especially human fertility preservation strategies and reproductive organ regeneration, has attracted significant attention in recent years as it is key in resolving the growing social concern over aging populations worldwide. Collagen-based biomaterials such as collagen hydrogels, decellularized ECM (dECM), and bioengineering techniques including collagen-based 3D bioprinting have facilitated the engineering of reproductive tissues. This review summarizes the recent progress in applying collagen-based biomaterials in reproductive. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects of collagen-based materials for engineering artificial reproductive tissues, hormone replacement therapy, and reproductive organ reconstruction, aiming to inspire new thoughts and advancements in engineered reproductive tissues research. Abnormal spermatozoa can not only reduce the fertilization rate, but also prolong the natural conception time and even increase the risk of spontaneous miscarriage. Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become a major global health problem, and its incidence continues to rise, while affecting an increasing number of men in their reproductive years. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), accounting for about 85-95% of DM, is closely related to the development of sperm. However, the exact association between T2DM and abnormal spermatozoa remains unclear. Herein, we designed a Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to explore the causal association between T2DM and abnormal spermatozoa risk in European population data which come from the GWAS summary datasets. We selected 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of T2DM (exposure data) as instrumental variables (IVs), and then retrieved the suitable abnormal spermatozoa genome-wide association study (GWAS) data of European from Ieu Open GWAS Project database which includes 915 cases and 209,006 control as the outcome data. Our results indicate that strict T2DM might not result in a higher risk of abnormal spermatozoa genetically in Europeans (OR: 1.017, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.771-1.342, p=0.902). Our findings demonstrate that only T2DM may not explain the relatively higher risk of abnormal spermatozoa in men with it in Europeans. In subsequent studies, more comprehensive and larger samples need to be studied to reveal the relationship and potential mechanism between T2DM and abnormal spermatozoa.

Uterine fibroids (UFs), the most common benign gynecological tumor, can bring severe negative impacts on a woman’s life quality. Vitamin D, is thought to play an important role in regulating cell proliferation and differentiation. In recent years, several studies suggested that higher level of vitamin D has a negative effect on the occurrence of UFs, but the results of studies on the relationship between them are conflicting and further evidence needs to be studied. Here in, we used a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (2SMR) study to explore the causal relationship between genetically predicted vitamin D levels and the risk of UFs. The exposure data comes from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary dataset consisting of 441,291 individuals, which includes datasets from United Kingdom Biobank, FinnGen Biobank and the corresponding consortia. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with vitamin D at a significant level of p < 5 × 10−8 and low linkage disequilibrium (LD) level (r2 < 0.01) were selected. The outcome data comes from a GWAS dataset of IEU analysis of United Kingdom Biobank phenotypes consisting of 7,122 UFs cases and 455,811 controls. Our inverse-variance weight (IVW) analysis results support the causal association of genetically predicted vitamin D with the risk of UFs (OR = 0.995,95% CI = 0.990-0.999, p = 0.024). In addition, heterogeneity and pleiotropy were not observed in statistical models. In summary, our results indicate that elevated serum vitamin D levels are in strong relationship with reduction of the risk of UFs, which indicates that the clinical treatment of UFs may have a new and excellent option.

Abstract Adeno‐associated virus (AAV)‐mediated gene therapy is a promising therapeutic modality for curing many diseases including monogenic diseases. However, limited tissue‐targeting and restricted re‐administration due to the vector immunogenicity largely restrict its therapeutic potential. Here, using a red blood cell (RBC) as the carrier vehicle for AAV is demonstrated to improve its tissue‐targeted transduction and enable its re‐administration. Anchoring AAV to the RBC surface minimally affected its infectability toward endothelial cells. Meanwhile, AAV anchored onto RBCs is predominantly delivered to and shows efficient transduction in the lungs by virtue of the biophysical features of RBCs. RBC‐anchored AAVs lead to a four‐ to five‐fold enhancement in target gene expression in the lungsas compared to free AAVs following a single‐ or dual‐dosing regimen. While RBC anchoring does not prevent the induction of adaptive immune responses against AAV, it results in successful transgene expression upon re‐administration following prior AAV exposure. The ability to re‐administer is partially attributed to the delayed and reduced AAV neutralization by neutralizing antibodies, resulting from the combination of limited exposure of physically confined AAVs and the short time required to reach the lungs. This study's findings suggest that the RBC‐mediated approach is a promising strategy for repetitive, targeted AAV gene therapy.

Abstract Effective and ecofriendly converting biomass to chemicals is important for sustainable engineering based on the foreseeable shortage of fossil resources. Undecylprodigiosin (UP) is a promising antibiotic, but the direct feeding of pure precursor amino acids makes it costly for large-scale production. Here, collagen peptide (CP), a renewable animal-derived biomass contains abundant precursor amino acids of UP. CP can act as carbon and nitrogen source for the growth of Streptomyces coelicolor CGMCC 4.7172. The plant biomasses including soybean meal, wheat bran, and malt extract were unsuitable for UP prodution. However, 365.40 µg/L UP was detected after 24 h in the media containing CP, and its highest concentration reached 1198.01 µg/L. UP was also detected in the media containing meat hydrolysates of domestic animals, but its initial production time was delayed, and final concentration was lower than that in the medium containing CP only. Compared the fermentation performances of CP and other proteins, CP has a special superiority for UP production. These results revealed that UP biosynthesis may be dependent on amino acid availability of substrates and CP is beneficial for UP production because of its specific amino acid composition. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ultrasonic stress germination (USG) on total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), the phenolic compositions, and antioxidant activities of black highland barley (BHB). The USG processing parameters, polyphenol profile, phenolic compositions, and antioxidant activities were explored after USG. Results showed that the optimal USG parameters were as follows: 350 W ultrasonic pretreatment power, 30 °C ultrasonication temperature, 25 min ultrasonication time, and 64 h germination time. Under these conditions, the total phenolic content (688.84 ± 5.30 mg/100 g) and total flavonoid content (59.23 ± 0.45 mg/100 g) of BHB were increased by 28.55% and 10.15%, respectively, compared to the untreated samples. In addition, the USG treatment could more effectively enrich bound phenolic acids and free flavonoids, among which the content of catechin was significantly increased by USG and was the main characteristic substance. Moreover, the USG treatment could improve the antioxidant activity and had a higher antioxidant potency composite index (APC index) (97.91%) of BHB. These results indicate that USG might be an effective method to enrich polyphenols and improve antioxidant activity in BHB.

Searchable encryption is an important cryptographic technique that achieves data security and keyword retrieval over encrypted data in cloud. In 2004, Boneh et.al proposed the first searchable encryption scheme based on asymmetric cryptography. Since then, many variants of public key searchable encryption schemes were proposed. However, most previous works are vulnerable to multi-ciphertext attack, and they cannot provide trapdoor indistinguishability. Another problem is how to improve the searching efficiency. To deal with two issues, we construct a fast and secure public key authenticated searchable encryption scheme with designed server. Our scheme can resist keyword guessing attacks, chosen multi-keyword attacks and multi-trapdoor attacks. The search function in our scheme achieves the logarithmic search time in number of keywords while most existing schemes required the linear time. By comparison with previous schemes in computational complexity, our scheme is very fast in keyword search.
