Paciente sin antecedentes patológicos de interés que debuta con diplopía y ptosis palpebral izquierda como primera manifestación de metástasis hipofisarias de un cáncer de origen pulmonar ampliamente diseminado y no conocido previamente. El diagnóstico se hizo con pruebas de imagen específicas del área hipofisaria en donde se apreció una neoformación en silla turca, que invadía el seno cavernoso izquierdo con erosión del dorso selar, junto con la presencia de nódulos pulmonares y múltiples adenopatías, además del estudio histológico de las lesiones. Se detectó un hipogonadismo hipogonadotropo como única alteración hormonal debido a la infiltración de la hipófisis anterior por las metástasis óseas en la base del cráneo. El paciente, a pesar de recibir varias sesiones de radioterapia, sufrió un deterioro neurológico progresivo falleciendo a las pocas semanas. A patient, without significant previous medical history, who started with diplopia and left palpebral ptosis as the first manifestation of hypophysary metastases of a widely disseminated and previously undetected cancer of pulmonary origin. Together with a histological study of the lesions, the diagnosis was made with specific image tests of the hypophysary area, which detected a neoformation in the sella turca that was invading the left cavernous sinus with erosion of the verso of the sellar, together with the presence of pulmonary nodules and numerous adenopathies. An hypogonadotropic hypogonadism was detected as the only hormonal alteration due to the infiltration of the anterior hypophysis due to the osseous metastases at the base of the cranium. The patient, in spite of receiving several weeks of radiotherapy, suffered a progressive neurological deterioration and died after a few weeks.

La diabetes MODY-5 es un tipo de diabetes monogénica infrecuente, causada por mutación en el gen del factor de transcripción nuclear hepático 1-beta (HNF-1β). Esta mutación puede ser de tipo puntual o bien corresponder a delecciones grandes, y a su vez, puede aparecer de novo por mutación espontánea o bien ser transmitida de forma hereditaria con carácter autosómico dominante. Está asociada con un alto riesgo de complicaciones microvasculares de aparición temprana en las personas afectas, así como con alteraciones renales características del tipo quistes y anomalías del tracto genital, que están presentes incluso antes del nacimiento. Por ello, está justificado hacer pruebas de detección para las mutaciones de HNF-1β en diabéticos no obesos, sobre todo, cuando existen alteraciones renales o genitales asociadas, sin tener en cuenta los antecedentes familiares. MODY-5 diabetes is an infrequent type of monogenic diabetes, caused by mutation in the gene of the nuclear hepatic transcription factor 1-beta (HNF-1β). This mutation can be of a momentary type or it might correspond to big deletions, and, in its turn, it can appear due to spontaneous de novo mutation or it can be transmitted by hereditary with an autosomal dominant character. It is associated with a high risk of microvascular complications that appear early in affected people, as well as with characteristic renal alterations of the cyst type, and anomalies of the genital tract, which are present even before birth. That is why it is justified to carry out detection tests for HNF-1β mutations in non-obese diabetics, above all when there are associated renal or genital alterations, without consideration of family antecedents.

To estimate reproductive potential, one needs to consider a variety of attributes including onset of maturity, fecundity, atresia, duration of reproductive season, daily spawning behaviour and spawning fraction. In this contribution, we review several methods currently used to estimate fecundity of marine fishes collected in the field in relation to their reproductive strategy. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are provided. Requirements are given to appropriately sample gonadal tissue that will enable researchers to establish incidence of sexual maturity and estimate fecundity.

In this paper possible evidence of a prolonged ovarian development phase in Greenland halibut is presented. The reproductive cycle in this species has been originally described based on the assumption that this phase should last about one year. The results of several years of analysis showed that there is more than one year between the mean age of females at the onset of the ovarian development and the mean age of actually spawning females. Two possible interpretations of this fact are discussed: the ovarian development phase (vitellogenesis) could last more than one year, and individual spawning does not necessarily occur on an annual basis as a consequence, or the incidence of non-spawning females every year could be very high. Both possibilities have important implications for the species’ reproductive potential and stock dynamics of this valuable deep water resource.

In early October 2000 an exploratory fishing for oceanic redfish have been conducted by one Spanish pelagic trawler in the NAFO Regulatory Area of Div. 1F. One scientific observer was on board this vessel during the whole fishing period. The seasonal and geographic distribution pattern of the fishing effort in the Spanish oceanic redfish fishery is presented. A shift in the fleet activity towards the south and west is observed between the second and third quarter, approaching the vicinity of the NAFO Convention area. In the fourth quarter no fishing activity occurred in the Irminger Sea, and the fleet activity concentrated in NAFO Div. 1F. The length distribution in NAFO Div. 1F is similar to the one recorded in the NEAFC oceanic redfish fishery by the Spanish and German fleets in the upper 500 m layer. Only 11 % of the females and 5 % of the redfish males caught in NAFO 1F were immature (juveniles). The majority of the adult females were sexually inactive, while 49 % of the adult males were at the fully ripe stage, so it could be a mating concentration.

The Spanish skate fishery in NAFO Regulatory Area is performed from August to November in a quite restricted area of Div. 3N at depths between 51 and 100 m. Fishing effort, unstandardized catch rates, length composition, sexual maturity, by-catch, discards and sex-ratios are presented in this paper. The length range of thorny skate in the catches is mainly between 30 and 85 cm, with a mode of 50-51 cm. Both sexes appeared equally represented in the catches. The main by-catch in this fishery is American plaice and yellowtail flounder. A large proportion of mature males are observed.

The Greenland halibut mature proportions at depth in both the commercial catches and the spring Spanish 3NO survey indices are also presented. According to the results of the Spanish fleet, the Greenland halibut fishery does not overlap significantly with either American plaice, yellowtail flounder, skate or cod. By-catches of witch flounder in the Greenland halibut fishery have been very small, at least in 1999. The CPUE analysis indicate that Greenland halibut is best caught in the deepest strata, with catch rates comparatively poor at depths less than 600 m. Besides a sharp change in catchability is observed between 500 – 600 m. The proportion of mature fish in the catches increases with depth attaining a maximum between 1200 – 1600 m. The survey results indicate that most part of the SSB is found at depths beyond 800 m.

It has been recognised that the recent catches of grenadiers by EU-Portugal and EU-Spain in Subarea 3, previously reported to NAFO as roundnose grenadiers, correspond to roughhead grenadier. Roughhead grenadier is taken as by-catch in the Greenland halibut fishery in the Regulatory Area mainly in Divisions 3LMN. Catches increased gradually and the largest proportion by country correspond to Spain and Portugal, with 6050 t. and 1089 t. respectively in 1998. A review of the biomass estimates from the available research surveys in Subareas 2 and 3 is presented. According to the Canadian fall surveys, it seems that the main part of the stock shifted from the northern Divisions (2GJand 3K) to the southern ones (3LN), and to greater depths (beyond 1000 m.) since early 90s. A review of the biological information available for this stock is also presented. Mean lengths (preanal fin lengths) of the catches show no decreasing trend since 1995. The age o fully recruitment to the fishery is 8, and the total mortality estimate (1997-1998) is Z = 0.43. Female age at maturity is 15, corresponding to a PFL of 26.5 cm. The Canadian fall survey series seems to be the best input for the assessment of this stock. At present the higher part of biomass is found in Div. 3L and 3N and at depths between 1000-1200 m. A yield per recruit has been performed using the input data presented in table 13. The partial recruitment vector comes from Cárdenas et al. (1995), The maturity curve at age from Murua and Motos (1997) and the mean weight at age from the 1998 agelength key. M is assumed as constant through the ages with a value of 0.2. The results of the yield per recruit analysis appears in Fig. 6. The estimated Fmax is 0.27 and F0.1 is 0.13. However it must be noted that this output is sensitive to possible changes in M, as if for instance M would be different between sexes, as suggest the results from Murua et al. (1999) and as it has been shown in the Greenland halibut (Anon. 1998). Any decreasing trend in the mean lengths, that would be an index of an excessive fishing pressure, is observed in the mean lengths of the catches since 1995 up to now. The available time series of catches at age is too short to analyse trends in the SSB, however it can be noted that only a 18 % and 10 % percent of the 1997 and 1998 catches respectively were above the female age at maturity (15 years). We have scarce information at the moment to assess an appropriate exploitation level, though survey series shows that at the current exploitation rate the biomass is increasing since 1994.

A review of the species composition, distribution and abundance of sharks in both the Spanish commercial catches (1991-98) and research surveys (1988-98) are carried out. Shark species are by-catches of Greenland halibut fishery. The proportion of shark species in the total catch is small and the main retained species is the black dogfish, whereas the main discard is the boreal shark. Since 1996 the retained proportion of black dogfish increase notably, as well as the proportion of total sharks. In the surveys this shark is the species with the highest biomass index. Black dogfish is found in the deepest waters. The length range of black dogfish is mainly between 50 and 80 cm, with a mode about 62-63 cm. No evident geographic pattern in the length distribution is observed during the studied period.

The Greenland halibut fishable stock has been declining substantially since late-1980s, according to both surveys and commercial fishery indices, particularly among the ages 10+, which corresponds to the females age at 50% maturity. In this paper it is reviewed the effect of this apparent reduction in the stock abundance in two main groups of biological parameters, namely growth and reproductive parameters, since late-1980s. Among growth parameters, the analysis of the first year growth is undertaken both by cohort and by geographic areas, assuming that density dependence might be the most severe at younger age classes. This is made using records of the respective first annual ring otolith diameters. Other growth related index such as the condition factor is also analysed. About the reproductive parameters, two aspects, are considered: the interannual variations in length-at-maturity and in the potential fecundity. A common feature observed is the relative stability of those characteristic through the period analysed, which could support a certain resiliency of the life history traits in this species.

Length and age at maturity are essential information to determine the spawning stock biomass and stock-recruit relationship. The usual knife-edge estimates of the mature proportions in fish populations obscure the knowledge on the true levels of the spawning potential of the stocks and the temporal variability is ignored. The yellowtail flounder stock is mainly concentrated on the southern Grand Bank, where the juvenile and the adult components overlap in their distribution. There was a fishing moratoria for this stock from 1994 to 1997, and for 1998 the Scientific Council recommended reopening a limited fishery, stating also that this fishery should be carefully monitored and sampled. Morgan and Walsh (1977) presented estimates of length and age at maturity for yellowtail flounder in Divisions 3 LNO from 1975 to 1995, based on the Canadian spring survey. In this paper additional information on this subject is presented, based on the results of the of the Spanish spring survey in Divisions 3NO.

Since 1993 a significant increase in the skate catches from the Spanish trawlers have been reported (Duran et al. 1996; Junquera et al. 1997). It was interpreted as a shift in the fishing strategy towards the exploitation of non-regulated species. Important skate by-catches are often taken in the Greenland halibut fishery, but at present a directed, though temporary, fishery has also been established. In this paper a review of the available information on this subject is presented.

The same parameters obtained from postovulatory follicle frequencies were 42.65 cm and 3.9 years, respectively. During the period from 1990 to 1995, a decrease in both length- and age-at-maturity was observed for cod on Flemish Cap. It seems likely that in those recent years the age-at-maturity of female cod was fixed around age 3. The possibility that these features could be a density-dependent response is discussed.
