Abstract Unfavourable conditions, such as prolonged drought and high salinity, pose a threat to the survival and agricultural yield of plants. The phytohormone ABA plays a key role in the regulation of plant stress adaptation and is often maintained at high levels for extended periods. While much is known about ABA signal perception and activation in the early signalling stage, the molecular mechanism underlying desensitization of ABA signalling remains largely unknown. Here we demonstrate that in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi network, the key regulators of ABA signalling, SnRK2.2/2.3, undergo N-glycosylation, which promotes their redistribution from the nucleus to the peroxisomes in Arabidopsis roots and influences the transcriptional response in the nucleus during prolonged ABA signalling. On the peroxisomal membrane, SnRK2s can interact with glucose-6-phosphate (G6P)/phosphate translocator 1 (GPT1) to maintain NADPH homeostasis through increased activity of the peroxisomal oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (OPPP). The resulting maintenance of NADPH is essential for the modulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation, thereby relieving ABA-induced root growth inhibition. The subcellular dynamics of SnRK2s, mediated by N-glycosylation suggest that ABA responses transition from transcriptional regulation in the nucleus to metabolic processes in the peroxisomes, aiding plants in adapting to long-term environmental stress.

In the freezing process, the soil is accompanied by heat conduction, heat release for ice-water phase change, phase change interface movement, and a change in thermal diffusion coefficient, which is a complex nonlinear problem and is hard to solve. This study uses the enthalpy method to establish a unified control equation for heat conduction in the entire calculation region (including the solid-phase zone, liquid-phase zone, and phase change interface). It solves the equation numerically, relying on the D2Q4 model of the lattice Boltzmann method, and determines the evolution of the temperature field and solid-liquid phase change interface position with time. The trends in the soil’s temperature field evolution and freezing front movement under unilateral and bilateral cold sources are discussed using an example from an artificial freezing project. The results show that when −10°C is taken as the limit for freezing wall temperature, the freezing wall thickness developed at 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 days under the unilateral cold source is 0.24, 0.33, 0.47, 0.57, and 0.66 m, respectively. The overall temperature in the soil drops below −13.6°C and −26.4°C at 35 days and 45 days under the bilateral cold sources. These values can provide a basis for engineering design.

This study focuses on the interdecadal increase of summertime extreme precipitation over East China in the late 1990s and physical mechanisms behind. The results show that summer extreme precipitation over East China during 1979–2020 demonstrates an upward trend and a significant interdecadal increase occurs around 1997/1998. Since 1997, extreme precipitation anomalies turn from less than normal to more than normal, corresponding to a strong upward movement in the lower troposphere over East China. A cyclonic circulation with positive vorticity controlled by a strong southeasterly flow appears in the lower level over South China. The reasons for the interdecadal increase of summer extreme precipitation over East China are analyzed from the perspective of the abnormally strong South Asian subtropical high (SAH) and the atmospheric circulation anomalies caused by zonal sea surface temperature (SST) gradient in the tropical oceans. After 1997, positive sensible heat anomalies appear over the Tibetan Plateau in spring, which is the major factor that maintains the intensity of the SAH. Besides, the SST of the tropical oceans presents an obvious “high-low-high” zonal gradient distribution with positive sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific, and negative SSTA over the Maritime Continent. The zonal SST gradient results in an anomalous downdraft and boundary layer divergence over the Maritime Continent. The tropical zonal SST gradient triggers a local Hadley circulation, and its ascending branch is located in East China. This is a circulation condition favorable for the development of extreme precipitation. In addition, since the late 1990s, the SAH has strengthened in the upper troposphere above the southeastern China. The anomalous divergence at the upper level effectively maintains the upward movement, which in turn facilitates the occurrence of extreme precipitation. As a result, the sensible heat changes in the Tibetan Plateau in spring and the tropical SST zonal gradient jointly affect summer extreme precipitation over East China, leading to the interdecadal increase of extreme precipitation in the late 1990s.
