The purpose of this study was to describe music teacher professional development (PD) in the United States and to chart potential differences between the experiences of music teachers, other arts teachers (visual art, theater, dance), and teachers in low-stakes (natural and social sciences) and high-stakes (math, English language arts) academic disciplines. Using data from the 2017-2018 National Teacher and Principal Survey, I evaluated PD practices, perceptions, and policies against six consensus criteria for effective PD: content specificity, social interaction, sustained duration, relevance, agency, and policy support. Findings showed music teacher participation in content-specific and socially interactive PD was robust and that the vast majority of music teachers described their PD as relevant. Cross-comparisons revealed discipline associations as to some criteria (social interaction, relevance, agency) but not others (content specificity, sustained duration, policy support). Although music teachers achieved parity or were advantaged in some areas (e.g., access to content-specific PD), they consistently reported less access to socially interactive PD, spent less overall time in PD, and were considerably less likely to exercise agency in support of their PD endeavors. Music teachers--along with their art, theater, and dance colleagues--generally, although not overwhelmingly, operated on less favorable PD terrain in 2017-2018.

To explore scientific mobility patterns, we leverage a rich bibliometric dataset on Taiwanese academia. We investigate the movement and productivity of 21,051 highly active researchers who published while affiliated with Taiwanese higher education institutions based on 30 years' worth of publication and affiliation records from 1991 to 2020. The analysis shows evidence of brain drain in Taiwan since the 2010s, with the U.S. the top destination for researchers moving from Taiwan (as well as the largest source of inbound researchers). China comes a close second to the U.S. as the top destination for outbound scholars. Studying how Taiwan's universities recruited talent after the country adopted the 2005 excellence initiative, we discover that the numbers of scholars recruited by World Class Universities (WCUs) and non-WCUs surprisingly converge with WCUs exhibiting a dramatic decrease in new recruits. Our evidence uncovers that inbound scholars, after their move, are more productive than non-mobile colleagues; however, this effect declines over time. We discuss implications for the study of excellence initiatives, their (un)intended consequences, and mechanisms of talent circulation that greatly impact research production and research university development.

Specifications grading is a relatively recent approach to assessing student learning. In this approach, students make progress toward completion of a course by demonstrating mastery of specific skills or material. The assessment tools are short, frequent exercises that can be attempted multiple times until mastered. This contrasts with the traditional, exam-based assessment of student learning. There are multiple benefits to the specifications grading-based strategy, including reduced test anxiety, better knowledge retention, and increased flexibility. In this study, specifications grading was implemented into an upper-level biochemistry course at a private, liberal arts university. The student cohort consisted almost exclusively of junior and senior biochemistry, biology, and chemistry majors. Students earned points for demonstrating mastery on each of 12 short quizzes in addition to points earned from laboratory exercises and on the cumulative final exam. Student attitudes were assessed using three surveys that were administered at the beginning, middle, and end of the course. The survey results indicated that the students had overall favorable opinions of the specifications grading approach and its use in this course. A comparison of student performance on the quizzes to their performance on the final exam showed that the students learned and retained the course material. Combining the survey and performance data, we demonstrated that the students' perceptions of their learning correlated well with their performances on the specifications grading tools. Together, these results indicated that specifications grading is an effective approach to assessing student learning and to maintaining student enthusiasm in an upper-level biochemistry course.

Theory of mind is an essential ability for complex social interaction and collaboration. Researchers in cognitive science and psychology have previously sought to integrate theory of mind capabilities into artificial intelligence (AI) agents to improve collaborative abilities (Cuzzolin, Morelli, Cirstea, & Sarahakian, 2020). We introduce the Recurrent Conditional Variational Autoencoder (RCVAE), a novel model which leverages the ability of generative models to learn rich abstracted representations of contextual behaviors to predict behavioral intent from human behavioral trajectories. Advancing on current concept learning models, this model allows for the discovery of latent intent in human behavior trajectories, while maintaining the scalability and performance of generative AI models. We show that in the Overcooked-AI environment, the RCVAE outperforms baseline Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models in predicting intent, achieving higher prediction accuracy and greater predictive stability. The implications of these results are significant; the RCVAE's proficiency in learning the relationship between basic actions and resulting contextual behaviors represents a significant advancement in concept learning for behavioral intent prediction.

Children with a unilateral congenital below elbow deficiency (UCBED) have one typical upper limb and one that lacks a hand, ending below the elbow at the proximal/mid forearm. UCBED is an isolated condition, and affected children otherwise develop normal sensorimotor control. Unlike adults with upper limb absence, the majority of whom have an acquired loss, children with UCBED never developed a hand, so their residual muscles have never actuated an intact limb. Their ability to purposefully modulate affected muscle activity is often assumed to be limited, and this assumption has influenced prosthetic design and prescription practices for this population as many modern devices derive control signals from affected muscle activity. To better understand the motor capabilities of the affected muscles, we used ultrasound imaging to study 6 children with UCBED. We examined the extent to which subjects activate their affected muscles when performing mirrored movements with their typical and missing hands. We demonstrate that all subjects could intentionally and consistently enact at least five distinct muscle patterns when attempting different missing hand movements (e.g., power grasp) and found similar performance across affected and typically developed limbs. These results suggest that although participants had never actuated the missing hand they could distinctively and consistently activate the residual muscle patterns associated with actions on the unaffected side. These findings indicate that motor control still develops in the absence of the normal effector, and can serve as a guide for developing prostheses that leverage the full extent of these children's motor control capabilities.

IntroductionPublic health concerns over the impact of social media use (SMU) on adolescent health are growing. We investigated the relationship between SMU and sleep health in adolescents in Canada aged 11 to 17 years. MethodsData from the 2017–2018 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study were available for 12 557 participants (55.2% female). SMU was categorized by frequency of use (non-active, active and intense) and the presence of addiction-like symptoms (problematic). Mixed effects logistic regression models identified associations between SMU and seven sleep health indicators (insomnia symptoms, daytime wakefulness problems, screen time before bed, meeting sleep duration recommendations, sleep variability and late bedtime on school and non-school days). ResultsCompared to active SMU, non-active SMU was associated with better sleep indicators, except for insomnia symptoms. Intense SMU was associated with greater odds of having poor sleep health indicators (adjusted odds ratio [aORs] from 1.09 to 2.24) and problematic SMU with the highest odds (aORs from 1.67 to 3.24). Associations with problematic SMU were greater among girls than boys, including having a later bedtime on school days (aOR = 3.74 vs. 1.84) and on non-school days (aOR = 4.13 vs. 2.18). Associations between SMU and sleep outcomes did not differ by age group. ConclusionCompared to active SMU, non-active SMU was associated with better sleep indicators, except for insomnia symptoms. IntroductionLes effets de l’utilisation des médias sociaux sur la santé des adolescents soulèvent de plus en plus de préoccupations en matière de santé publique. Nous avons exploré la relation entre cette utilisation et la santé du sommeil chez les adolescents du Canada de 11 à 17 ans. MéthodologieDes données de l’Enquête sur les comportements de santé des jeunes d’âge scolaire de 2017-2018 étaient disponibles pour 12 557 participants (dont 55,2 % de sexe féminin). Des catégories d’utilisation des médias sociaux ont été établies en fonction de la fréquence (utilisation non active, active ou intensive) et de la présence de symptômes évoquant une dépendance (utilisation problématique). Des modèles de régression logistique à effets mixtes ont révélé des associations entre l’utilisation des médias sociaux et sept indicateurs de la santé du sommeil (symptômes d’insomnie, somnolence diurne, utilisation d’un écran avant de se coucher, respect des recommandations sur la durée du sommeil, variabilité du sommeil, heure de coucher tardive les jours d’école et heure de coucher tardive les jours de repos). RésultatsComparativement à une utilisation active des médias sociaux, une utilisation non active a été associée à de meilleurs résultats des indicateurs de la santé du sommeil, sauf en ce qui concerne les symptômes d’insomnie. Une utilisation intensive des médias sociaux a été associée à un risque accru d’indicateurs défavorables de la santé du sommeil (rapport de cotes ajusté [RCa] de 1,09 à 2,24) et une utilisation problématique a été associée au RCa le plus élevé (1,67 à 3,24). White-tailed deer are susceptible to scrapie (WTD scrapie) after oronasal inoculation with the classical scrapie agent from sheep. Deer affected by WTD scrapie are difficult to differentiate from deer infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD). To assess the transmissibility of the WTD scrapie agent and tissue phenotypes when further passaged in white-tailed deer, we oronasally inoculated wild-type white-tailed deer with WTD scrapie agent. We found that WTD scrapie and CWD agents were generally similar, although some differences were noted. The greatest differences were seen in bioassays of cervidized mice that exhibited significantly longer survival periods when inoculated with WTD scrapie agent than those inoculated with CWD agent. Our findings establish that white-tailed deer are susceptible to WTD scrapie and that the presence of WTD scrapie agent in the lymphoreticular system suggests the handling of suspected cases should be consistent with current CWD guidelines because environmental shedding may occur.

Abstract Mass spectral libraries have proven to be essential for mass spectrum annotation, both for library matching and training new machine learning algorithms. A key step in training machine learning models is the availability of high-quality training data. Public libraries of mass spectrometry data that are open to user submission often suffer from limited metadata curation and harmonization. The resulting variability in data quality makes training of machine learning models challenging. Here we present a library cleaning pipeline designed for cleaning tandem mass spectrometry library data. The pipeline is designed with ease of use, flexibility, and reproducibility as leading principles. Scientific contribution This pipeline will result in cleaner public mass spectral libraries that will improve library searching and the quality of machine-learning training datasets in mass spectrometry. This pipeline builds on previous work by adding new functionality for curating and correcting annotated libraries, by validating structure annotations. Due to the high quality of our software, the reproducibility, and improved logging, we think our new pipeline has the potential to become the standard in the field for cleaning tandem mass spectrometry libraries. Abstract Disruption of alternative splicing frequently causes or contributes to human diseases and disorders. Consequently, there is a need for efficient and sensitive reporter assays capable of screening chemical libraries for compounds with efficacy in modulating important splicing events. Here, we describe a screening workflow employing dual Nano and Firefly luciferase alternative splicing reporters that affords efficient, sensitive, and linear detection of small molecule responses. Applying this system to a screen of ~95,000 small molecules identified compounds that stimulate or repress the splicing of neuronal microexons, a class of alternative exons often disrupted in autism and activated in neuroendocrine cancers. One of these compounds rescues the splicing of several analyzed microexons in the cerebral cortex of an autism mouse model haploinsufficient for Srrm4, a major activator of brain microexons. We thus describe a broadly applicable high-throughput screening system for identifying candidate splicing therapeutics, and a resource of small molecule modulators of microexons with potential for further development in correcting aberrant splicing patterns linked to human disorders and disease.

The purpose of this phenomenology was to examine the lived experience of being a first-year music teacher during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across two data waves, the first in winter 2020 and the second in late spring 2021, we collected written reflections and conducted online interviews with 10 music teachers who began their careers in 2020 to 2021. We found that participants' experiences were characterized by overwhelm, disconnection, a pervasive concern for well-being, and a sense of missing out. These experiences were shaped by contextual factors like being responsible for mixed instructional modalities, coping with inconsistent student attendance, and navigating safety protocols that presented barriers to learning. The essence of being a first-year music teacher during the pandemic was the feeling of being adrift amid a largely lost year, looking to the next year as another first year of teaching. We suggest that this cohort of novice music teachers is distinct from previous cohorts, having been shaped by an intensified teaching experience. Induction supports such as mentoring may need to be extended through the first 3 years of their careers, and researchers should continue to follow this cohort because their trajectory is unclear.
