Bandgap engineering and quantum confinement in semiconductor heterostructures provide the means to fine-tune material response to electromagnetic fields and light in a wide range of the spectrum. Nonetheless, forming semiconductor heterostructures on lattice-mismatched substrates has been a challenge for several decades, leading to restrictions for device integration and the lack of efficient devices in important wavelength bands. Here, we show that the van der Waals epitaxy of two-dimensional (2D) GaSe and InSe heterostructures occur on substrates with substantially different lattice parameters, namely silicon and sapphire. The GaSe/InSe heterostructures were applied in the growth of quantum wells and superlattices presenting photoluminescence and absorption related to interband transitions. Moreover, we demonstrate a self-powered photodetector based on this heterostructure on Si that works in the visible-NIR wavelength range. Fabricated at wafer-scale, these results pave the way for an easy integration of optoelectronics based on these layered 2D materials in current Si technology., 16 Pages, 5 figures. Extended research on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) revealed viable routes to apply these materials in the semiconductor and (opto)electronic industry. However, fully reproducible methods for the wafer-scale production of crystalline and uniform 2D TMDCs have yet to be established. In this work, atomically thin MoSe2 films were grown on a Si/SiO2 substrate by a standard atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using Se and MoO3 powder precursors. The samples were transferred from the original substrate by using water-soluble polymers as supporting materials, which allowed a clean and efficient transfer process. Extensive characterization was performed via Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The CVD growth led to cm-sized, few-layer polycrystalline MoSe2 films made of sub-µm crystalline grains, which are randomly orientated grains and different in lateral size, forming overall fragmented structures. The grains present varying thickness, from bilayer (weakly photoluminescent) to multilayer. Additionally, the different multilayer stacking orientations found on the grown samples give rise to different material phases, as confirmed by TEM. These features need to be taken into consideration for the fabrication of MoSe2-based devices.

First described from the Mascarenes (Rodrigues Island, Indian Ocean), Olifantiella gorandiana Riaux-Gobin was later observed from several other oceanic basins. We here examine the morphology of this taxon from a scraping of a juvenile green turtle Chelonia mydas Linnaeus, named ‘G5-Manahere’, from Moorea Island (Society Archipelago, South Pacific). In this sample, a great range of morphologies, not previously described for the species, were encountered, demonstrating a high degree of polymorphism with regard to valve shape and also stria pattern. These morphological differences appear to be associated with size, as smaller cells become more rounded. The fine structure (e.g., stria density and pattern) may also be associated with changes in shape. These specimens may all belong to the same and unique taxon: Olifantiella gorandiana. This high degree of polymorphism is described, and put into the context of the constraining epizoic conditions. This study permits furthers the description of the fine structure of O. gorandiana, using focused ion beam (FIB) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques.

Silicon plates were installed above the inner and outer divertor of the JET with the ITER-like wall (ILW) after the second and third ILW campaigns to monitor dust generation and deposition with the aim to determine the morphology and content of individual particles and co-deposits, including deuterium content. Particular interest was in metal-based particles: Be, W, steel, Cu. Ex-situ examination after two ILW campaigns was performed by a set of microscopy and ion beam methods including micro-beam nuclear reaction analysis and particle-induced X-ray emission. Different categories of Be-rich particles were found: co-deposits peeled-off from plasma-facing components (PFC), complex multi-element spherical objects, and solid metal splashes and regular spherical droplets. The fuel content on the two latter categories was at the level of 1 × 1016 at/cm−2 indicating that Be melting and splashing occurred in the very last phase of the second experimental campaign. The splashes adhere firmly to the substrate thus not posing risk of Be dust mobilisation. No tungsten droplets were detected. The only W-containing particles were fragments of tungsten coatings from the divertor tiles.

2D GaSe is a semiconductor belonging to the group of post-transition metal chalcogenides with great potential for advanced optoelectronic applications. The weak interlayer interaction in multilayer 2D materials allows the formation of several polymorphs. Here, the first structural observation of a new GaSe polymorph is reported, characterized by a distinct atomic configuration with a centrosymmetric monolayer (D-3d point group). The atomic structure of this new GaSe polymorph is determined by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Density-functional theory calculations verify the structural stability of this polymorph. Furthermore, the band structure and Raman intensities are calculated, predicting slight differences to the currently known polymorphs. In addition, the occurrence of layer rotations, interlayer relative orientations, as well as translation shear faults is discussed. Extended investigations on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have opened sound possibilities to apply these materials in several technological fields such as sensing. To this end, fully reproducible methods for the wafer-scale production of crystalline and uniform 2D TMDCs are in demand. In this work, atomically thin MoSe2 was grown by atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition using the Na-assisted process with Se powder and Mo foil precursors on a glass substrate. The samples were extensively characterized via Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The MoSe2 samples consist of submillimeter, monolayer single-crystals with 2H phase configuration. Being monolayer and crystalline, the samples exhibit well-defined and intense photoluminescence. CVD-grown 2D MoSe2 was integrated into a device with strain-tunable optical properties and tested. Under tensile strain (in the range of 0.2%–0.4%), the spectral emission responded to an in-plane strain with marked peak shifts toward lower energies for increasing levels of strain (∼3 and ∼2 nm shift for the main PL component at 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively), indicating a reduction of the bandgap.

We present a facile and green approach to produce crystalline TiO2 nanoparticles on a surface of different carbonaceous materials derived from lignocellulosic biomass such as STARBON-800® obtained by carbonization at 800°C and biochar-SWP700 (Soft Wood Pellets (SWP) obtained by pyrolysis at 700°C) via novel low-temperature ultrasound-promoted green methodology coupled with citric acid as a cross-linking agent. In comparison to other methods, the developed method has several significant benefits such as simplicity, great ability to get crystalline TiO2 particles (elimination of high-temperature treatment (material calcination at >300°C) needed in the conventional sol-gel method, which is extremely important in transforming amorphous TiO2 into a photoactive crystalline phase) elimination of risky chemicals and oxidizing agent, and also ability to change some parameters (e.g. ultrasound intensity). Prepared materials were characterized by XRD, DR UV-vis, N2 physisorption, HR-XPS, XRF, HR-TEM, FT-IR and subsequently tested for their photocatalytic activities both in photocatalytic phenol degradation (in water) and oxidation of methanol (in air) under UV and visible light irradiation.

Hydrogen intercalation is widely used to weaken graphene-substrate interactions and as a result enhancing graphene’s electronic properties. This paper presents the study of microstructure of hydrogen intercalated graphene grown on Ge(0 0 1)/Si(0 0 1) substrate using Low-Voltage Scanning Electron Microscopy. The findings reveal a significant change in the surface morphology of germanium substrate: faceting structure disappears almost completely, the germanium surface flattens, and steps/terraces are formed. This leads to degradation of graphene’s electronic properties, which shows the negative impact of hydrogen intercalation when graphene is grown on the germanium substrate.

The goal of this study was to investigate the influence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) before and after chemical functionalisation, graphene oxide (GO), and hybrid coating deposited on a titanium (Ti) surface on the nerve cell response in vitro. The physicochemical properties of the surface of the carbon nanomaterial coatings deposited on the Ti substrate using electrophoretic deposition were investigated, followed by biological tests. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to evaluate the microstructure and chemistry of the carbon nanomaterial coatings. Electrochemical characterisation of the carbon nanomaterial coatings on metal substrates was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and cathodic charge storage capacity. During in vitro analysis, all samples were placed in direct contact with human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. The viability were analysed after 48 and 72 h of culture. Moreover, the cell morphology in contact with the carbon nanomaterial coatings was observed using fluorescence microscopy. Additionally, the neurite outgrowth and number of pyknotic nuclei were examined using cell microphotographs. GO exhibited the best biological results among all analysed samples, with a positive effect on cell viability, neural cell morphology, and especially neurite outgrowth, and significantly improved the biological properties of the other hybrid (nanocomposite) coatings. GO coating is not an electrochemically active material, thus its applicability for the production of electrodes for nerve stimulation is limited. However, it may be useful as a scaffold for nerve cell stimulation and regeneration. The advantageous electrochemical activity of MWCNT coatings and a satisfactory cell response greater than the Ti surface alone will pave the way for further research on electrodes for nerve cell stimulation.

A constant height of gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires with graphene deposited on them is shown to have a strong enhancement of Raman scattering, whilst variable height nanowires fail to give such an enhancement. Scanning electron microscopy reveals a smooth graphene surface which is present when the GaN nanowires are uniform, whereas graphene on nanowires with substantial height differences is observed to be pierced and stretched by the uppermost nanowires. The energy shifts of the characteristic Raman bands confirms that these differences in the nanowire height has a significant impact on the local graphene strain and the carrier concentration. The images obtained by Kelvin probe force microscopy show clearly that the carrier concentration in graphene is modulated by the nanowire substrate and dependent on the nanowire density. Therefore, the observed surface enhanced Raman scattering for graphene deposited on GaN nanowires of comparable height is triggered by self-induced nano-gating to the graphene. However, no clear correlation of the enhancement with the strain or the carrier concentration of graphene was discovered.

In this work, we present a new fabrication method of thermoelectric nanomaterials using Pulsed Plasma in Liquid (PPL) with a low-energy spark discharge. Thermoelectric (TE) materials can be used for direct energy conversion from heat into electricity. They are of particular interest as a result of enabling both clean energy transformation and waste heat energy harvesting. The efficiency of the conversion process depends on the Carnot cycle and the material’s properties, described by the thermoelectric figure-of-merit (ZT). This parameter is based on electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity. One can increase the ZT value by reducing the thermal conductivity e.g. through the nano-structuring of TE materials and, at the same time, conserving their electrical properties. CoSb3, which is a state-of-the-art TE material from the skutterudite family known as a narrow-band gap semiconductor with a parabolic bottom of the conduction band, was studied in the present work. Binary skutterudite CoSb3 polycrystalline ingots were synthesized by a direct fusion technique from pure elements. The densified materials with a cylindrical shape were used as substrates in the fabrication process of CoSb3 nanoparticles via the modified Pulse Plasma in Liquid method. The nanopowders were consolidated using rapid Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) with the processing time in minutes. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) were used to characterize the synthesized powders and sinters. Thermal conductivity was determined by the laser flash technique (LFA). Electrical properties such as resistivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured by the four probe technique, as a function of temperature.

To produce metal-diamond composite materials with high thermal conductivity, it is important for a high-quality carbide interface to exist between the metal matrix and diamond. The addition of carbide-forming elements to the matrix positively influences the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC), and is an effective method for improving the bulk thermal conductivity of composite materials. Diamond powder was mixed with Cu0.65Cr alloy powder, using a 1:1 volume ratio. The pulse plasma sintering (PPS) parameters were optimized to control the carbide interface between the diamond and matrix. The microstructures and phase compositions of the fabricated materials were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The interfacial layer was characterized using SEM and focused ion beam (FIB) techniques. The residual Cr content of the matrix was estimated, to determine its influence on the thermal properties of the matrix. To calculate the ITC, differential effective medium (DEM) and Hasselman-Johnson (H–J) models were used. The highest thermal conductivity of 687 W m−1 K−1 was achieved by a composite material that was fabricated at 850 °C over a period of 10 min, which had an 81-nm-thick interfacial carbide layer. An ITCDEM value of 5·107 W m−2 K−1 was obtained. Summary The aim of study was to investigate the effects of static magnetic fields [1 mT (miliTesla), 5 and 10 mT] on Saprolegnia parasitica growth, development, and cytotoxicity in the infection of trout eggs in hatcheries under laboratory and industrial conditions. The egg envelope (SEM) structures resulting from infection with and development of S. parasitica are also presented. S. parasitica mycelium was cultured on a microbiological medium SDA in Petri dishes (4 ± 0.2°C, 97% humidity) exposed to a magnetic field and in a control, to assess the mycelium growth rate. Effects of the magnetic field on cytotoxicity of S. parasitica after a 21-day incubation on SDA medium were analyzed using the colorimetric cytotoxicity test MTT. Eggs of brown trout Salmo trutta were infected with S. parasitica by inoculum and incubated in glass vessels (4 ± 0.2°C) in a magnetic field and a control. The degree of mycelium invasion of the egg envelopes and the percentage of egg mortality were recorded daily thoughout the period of embrionic development. The magnetic field effects on brown trout eggs infected by wild strains of fungus-like organisms (FLO) in the hatchery (4°C ± 0.1) were also investigated. Changes in the structure of brown trout egg envelopes as a result of infection and development of S. parasitica were examined in a FIB/SEM. The effects of magnetic fields of 5 and 10 mT on slowing the growth of mycelium of S. parasitica in vitro were also observed. Determining biochemical properties of S. parasitica also showed the effects of the magnetic field in differentiating the cytotoxicity. All magnetic field values showed a distinct decrease from medium to low values of S. parasitica cytotoxicity; the most effective reduction was observed at 5 mT. Magnetic fields in all tested levels slowed development of the mycelium on the incubated trout eggs, resulting in a decrease in the number of eggs infected by S. parasitica and thus permitting a greater hatching success. Similar effects were observed in other hatching conditions where eggs were also exposed. No negative effects of magnetic field treatment on the condition of the newly-hatched larvae were observed. The SEM and FIB (Focused Ion Beam) analyses revealed penetration of S. parasitica via radial canals of the envelope. The magnetic field had no effect on the structure of hyphae or sporangia of S. parasitica, but did affect the growth rate of mycelium on the egg surface.

The epitaxial growth of two-dimensional (2D) $\beta-In_2Se_3$ material was obtained over 2-inches c-sapphire wafers using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Excellent quality of thick (90 nm) and very thin films, down to two quintuple layers (2 nm), was confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM). Wafer-scale fabrication of photodetectors based on five quintuple layers was produced using photolithography and other standard semiconductor processing methods. The photodetectors exhibit responsivity of 3 mA/W, peak specific detectivity (D*) of $10^9$ Jones, external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 0.67 % at 550 nm, and response-time of ~7 ms, which is faster than any result previously reported for $\beta-In_2Se_3$ photodetectors. From the photocurrent measurements, an optical bandgap of 1.38 eV was observed. These results on wafer-scale deposition of 2D $In_2Se_3$, as well as its fabrication into optoelectronic devices provide the missing link that will enable the commercialization of 2D materials.

The highly Be-doped InAs layer has been grown on semi-insulating GaAs (100) substrate by Molecular Beam Epitaxy. Very good quality of the layer has been attested by high resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the Raman spectra. The parallel and perpendicular residual strain are determined to be – 1.17 × 10-3 , and 1.12 × 10-3 , respectively. Moreover, the absorbance (ABS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were collected in order to estimate the bandgap narrowing. The 10 meV bandgap shrinking for 1.7×1018 cm-3 acceptor concentration suggests necessity of reexamining the Jain et al model [Jain, S. C., et al. - JAP 68(7): 3747-3749] in the context of actual values of InAs valence-bands effective-masses.

The effect of Al substitution on microstructure, martensitic transformation and magnetocaloric properties in Ni48Mn39.5Sn12.5−xAlx (x = 0, 1, 2, 3) alloys is reported. At room temperature, depending on Al concentration, the alloys have typical Heusler L21 austenite structure and/or orthorhombic martensite structure with Pmma space group. A secondary Ni-Mn-Al phase also appears already for low Al concentrations (x ≥ 1). On cooling, irrespective of Al substitution, all the samples show ferromagnetic type ordering below 303 K in the austenite phase. The martensitic transition temperature varies with Al content. All the alloys undergo magnetic field-induced reverse martensitic transformation giving rise to an inverse magnetocaloric effect. The largest magnetic entropy change (8.5 J·kg−1·K−1) is observed near 280 K for the Ni48Mn39.5Sn12.5 alloy.

We demonstrate for the first time a highly efficient Cu(i)-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition reaction on the surface of ZnO nanocrystals with retention of their photoluminescence properties. Our comparative studies highlight the superiority of a novel self-supporting organometallic method for the preparation of brightly luminescent and well-passivated ZnO nanocrystals over the traditional sol-gel procedure.

The microstructure and properties of the composite TiN–Ti–Al type titanium nitride surface layer with a sub-layer of titanium and aluminium produced on AZ91D magnesium alloy using a hybrid PVD method including final sealing by hydrothermal treatment were investigated. The results were analysed in terms of the microstructure–properties correlation, to approach the role of the sub-layers and the mechanisms involved in the properties improvement. The microstructure investigations indicate that the composite titanium nitride layers are tight and have nano-crystalline, diffusive character and multi zone microstructure of the type TixOy–TiN–Ti–Al–Al3Mg2–Al12Mg17. The significant corrosion resistance improvement of the AZ91D alloy obtained using the sealed composite titanium nitride layers was found to be the result of a synergistic mechanism which combined hydrothermal treatment of the layer with an action of aluminium sub-layer which is critical to make the sealing effective. The diffusive bonding via Mg–Al zone improves adhesion and the load bearing capacity of titanium nitride layers in wear conditions.

Summary The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of a static magnetic field on the trout sperm motility parameters (CASA), DNA integrity (comet assay) and morphology (SEM). The fertilisation rate was also assessed. Exposing the trout spermatozoa to a static magnetic field (1 mT, 5 mT, 10 mT) prolonged the sperm motility to 12 days (288 h), while the control sperm remained motile for only 3 days (72 h). Analysis of fragmentation of genetic material in the spermatozoon head revealed no effects from the studied magnetic fields. After a 30-min exposure of spermatozoa to the magnetic field, the proportion of fertilised eggs was already 12.7% (1 mT) to 15% (10 mT), higher than that in the control variant. The plasma oxynitriding process is a prospective method of producing titanium oxides as an integral part of a diffusive nitrided surface layer on titanium implants. This hybrid process, which combines glow discharge assisted nitriding and oxidizing, permits producing TiO2 + Ti2N + αTi(N)-type diffusive surface layers. The oxynitrided surface layers improve the corrosion and wear resistance of the substrate material. Additionally, the nanocrystalline titanium oxide TiO2 (rutile) improves the biological properties of titanium and its alloys when in contact with blood, whereas the TiN + Ti2N + αTi(N) zone eliminates the effect of metalosis.

A composite material consisting of metallic platinum nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide was successfully obtained in microflow reactor. Moreover, subnanometric platinum particles were observed. Reduced graphene oxide plays an important role as a stabilizing agent for platinum nanoparticles. Reduced graphene oxide coverage and platinum particle size as well as size distribution depend mainly on initial concentration of platinum(IV) ions. High level of reduced graphene oxide coverage by platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) was obtained and is equal to 71%. This in turn effects significantly the mass ratio of reduced graphene oxide to PtNPs which is equal to 49% (w/w). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the obtained materials were performed. Also, catalytic properties of the obtained composite material consisting of PtNPs at reduced graphene oxide surface, towards electrochemical glucose oxidation, were investigated. Boron nitride films were grown on 2-inch sapphire substrates using the MOCVD technique. The growth was performed using a pulsed source injection mode with triethylborane (TEB) and ammonia (NH3) with a high V/III ratio, which corresponds to the self-terminated growth mode. Two different carrier gases, H2 and Ar, were used to investigate their influence on the growth mechanism, while all the other growth parameters were kept the same. The BN films thus obtained were examined using XRR, SIMS, Raman spectroscopy, ATR spectroscopy, SEM and AFM. A difference was found in the surface roughness. The BN films grown in an H2 atmosphere had a surface roughness three times smoother than those grown in Ar. However, the main difference was brought to light by SIMS measurements. The SIMS measurements revealed that growth under an H2 flow leads to a reduction in carbon concentration by more than four orders of magnitude. It was also shown that the boron distribution in the BN film grown under an H2 flow is very uniform. It is discussed that this mechanism is related to the reactions between TEB and NH3 in the presence of H2. The elimination of carbon by using hydrogen reveals its role in BN growth, which is indeed essential.

The marine diatom Olifantiella Riaux–Gobin et Compère predominantly occurs in tropical Indo– Pacific coral reef environments. The genus has about a dozen validly published taxa and is characterized by transapically elongate striae composed of a macroareola, broad perforated girdle, and tubular buciniportula process of trumpet–shape. The valve mantle of taxa related to the generitype, O. mascarenica, have a canal– shaped structure around the valve at the face / mantle junction, while those to O. gorandiana have a simple mantle or strongly narrow canal and complex buciniportula composed of hollow processes. The geographic distribution of Olifantiella is expanded in this study to include species observed in loggerhead sea turtles scrapes from the Aegean Turkish coast and samples from the Turkish Black Sea and Adriatic Sea coasts. Olifantiella has also been identified in Martinique Island, Caribbean Sea. A transfer of Navicula infirmitata is proposed due to the areola and buciniportula structure, as Olifantiella infirmitata. The interfaces in Pulse Plasma Sintered composites of Cu0.8Cr and diamond have been characterised. The interfaces between the diamond and the Cu0.8Cr matrix generally exhibited a strong degree of bonding, but variations related to the orientation of the diamond facets were revealed. Image analysis established that the surfaces of the diamond particles were partially coated with chromium carbide, which averaged 43% for the {111} facets and 31% for the {100} facets. In addition thin and irregular layers of graphite were also observed. The composite with a 50% volume fraction of diamond possessed a thermal diffusivity of 218 mm 2 /s which infers a thermal conductivity of 589 W/(m·K), which is 76% of the maximum theoretical conductivity predicted by the Maxwell model.

The unique physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of zinc oxide nanocrystals (ZnO NCs) are strongly dependent on the nanocrystal/ligand interface, which is largely determined by synthetic procedures. Stable ZnO NCs coated with a densely packed shell of 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)acetate ligands, which act as miniPEG prototypes, with average core size and hydrodynamic diameter of 4-5 and about 12 nm, respectively, were prepared by an organometallic self-supporting approach, fully characterized, and used as a model system for biological studies. The ZnO NCs from the one-pot, self-supporting organometallic procedure exhibit unique physicochemical properties such as relatively high quantum yield (up to 28 %), ultralong photoluminescence decay (up to 2.1 μs), and EPR silence under standard conditions. The cytotoxicity of the resulting ZnO NCs toward normal (MRC-5) and cancer (A549) human lung cell lines was tested by MTT assay, which demonstrated that these brightly luminescent, quantum-sized ZnO NCs have a low negative impact on mammalian cell lines. These results substantiate that the self-supporting organometallic approach is a highly promising method to obtain high-quality, nontoxic, ligand-coated ZnO NCs with prospective biomedical applications.

The unique optical properties of zinc oxide nanocrystals (ZnO NCs) are strongly dependent on both the properties and the composition of the inorganic core–organic ligand interface. Developing a novel organometallic self-supporting approach, we report on the synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanocrystals coated by chiral monoanionic aminoalcoholate ligands. The resulting ZnO NCs are both chiroptically active and possess size dependent optical properties. The size and in consequence the emission color of the ZnO NCs could be simply adjusted by the characteristic of the aminoalcohol used.

Despite various applications of alkylzinc carboxylates in chemistry and materials science, the corresponding organozinc derivatives of organophosphorus compounds still represent an insufficiently explored area. To fill this gap, we report on the synthesis of alkylzinc phosphinates and their use as efficient precursors of phosphinate-coated ZnO nanocrystals in the quantum size regime. Examples of a series of alkylzinc phosphinates with the general formula [RZn(O2 PR'2 )] (R=tBu or Et) have been prepared through equimolar reactions between ZnR2 and a selected phosphinic acid, namely dimethylphosphinic acid (dmpha-H), methylphenylphosphinic acid (mppha-H), diphenylphosphinic acid (dppha-H), or bis(4-methoxyphenyl)phosphinic acid (dmppha-H). The reactivities of alkylzinc phosphinate complexes toward H2 O and O2 have also been investigated, which resulted in the isolation of two oxo-zinc phosphinate clusters, that is, [Zn4 (μ4 -O)(dppha)6 ] and [Zn4 (μ4 -O)(dmppha)6 ], as well as the unique alkoxy(oxo)zinc cluster [Zn4 (μ4 -O)(μ2 -OtBu)(dppha)5 ]. Analysis of the crystal structures has revealed that organozinc complexes incorporating phosphinate ligands exhibit a unique capacity for shape-driven self-assembly to produce extended networks, including noncovalent quasi-porous materials. Finally, monodispersed and quantum-sized ZnO NCs coated with phosphinate ligands have been prepared using a non-external-surfactant-assisted wet-chemical organometallic approach based on well-defined [RZn(O2 PR'2 )]-type compounds. The resulting brightly luminescent ZnO NCs exhibit average core sizes and hydrodynamic diameters in the ranges 2-4.5 nm and 5-8 nm, respectively. The size of the inorganic core is slightly affected by the character of the incorporated phosphinate ligand, being smallest for ZnO NCs coated by asymmetrically substituted mppha ligands. Regardless of whether or not various phosphinate coating ligands could be controllably applied on the ZnO NC surface, no significant differences were found in the luminescence profiles of the analyzed nanosystems.

The goal of this study was to investigate the influence of graphene oxide (GO) and polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite coatings deposited on titanium substrates on two types of nerve cells in vitro, namely human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and primary neuronal cell cultures. Selected physicochemical properties such as morphology, microstructure, surface energy and wettability of the surface of the nanocomposite coatings deposited on a Ti substrate using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) were investigated, followed by biological tests. Moreover, infrared spectroscopy was performed to determine the chemistry of the nanocomposites, while the cathodic charge storage capacity was assessed in the electrochemical characterisation of these coatings. The more sensitive nature of primary cells may have contributed to the observation of significant differences between GO-based coatings, which was not observed with SH-SY5Y cells. Of the four studied coatings, the most promising one was the GO:PANI_16:1 nanocomposite coating. In terms of biocompatibility, cell morphology and neurite length, this coating was the most promising when used in contact with the cell line as well as the primary culture. An interesting phenomenon not seen so far in contact with GO:PANI_16:1 is the tendency of neuronal cell bodies to aggregate in ‘neurosphere-like’ structures.

Accumulation and recovery of radiation defects under/after self-ion irradiation in tungsten (W) have been investigated via decoration with deuterium (D) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The deuterium was incorporated in damaged material by low-energy D plasma. The D concentration at radiation-induced defects in each sample was subsequently measured by nuclear reaction analysis allowing determination of the D concentration at depths up to 6 μm. The total D retention was measured by thermal desorption spectroscopy. It was shown that pre-irradiation with self-ions led to rather high D concentration (⩾ 0.1 at.%) in W even at high temperatures (⩾ 700 K) due to formation of defects with high de-trapping energy for deuterium. The annealing of defects with low trapping energy for D occurs intensively in the temperature range between 300 and 700 K. The radiation-induced defects with high de-trapping energy for D are thermally stable at least up to 1100 K. The rearrangement and partial healing of dislocations as well as coalescence of small clusters in a big ones accompanied by a reduction of the total density of defects was observed by STEM after annealing of radiation-induced defects in recrystallized tungsten at 1000 K. The D retention monotonically decreases in recrystallized W with increasing of annealing temperature up to 1100 K that is in agreement with the reduction of radiation defect density observed by STEM. However, an increase of the D retention in ‘as received’ W pre-irradiated with self-ions at annealing temperature of around 1000 K was found. The increase of the D retention at annealing temperature of ∼1000 K was not observed in the case of recrystallized W pre-irradiated with self-ions. The mechanism of recovery of radiation-induced defects in dependence on the initial intrinsic defects (grain size, impurities, etc.) in W is discussed.

In this work, the synthesis of the spherical clusters containing 3-4 nm platinum nanoparticles enclosed in a polymer capsule is described. The process of nanoparticles formation was intensified by using a microreactor. The application of microreactor enabled us to shorten the time of redox reaction and nucleation stage up to 6 seconds at 105°C in comparison with the process carried out in a batch reactor at 40°C. Using Vitamin C as a bio-reducer of platinum(IV) complexes and biocompatible polymers, the products non-toxic and environmentally friendly, stable for at least 9 months, were obtained. Presented procedure for nanoparticles synthesis seems to be an alternative method for platinum recovery from solutions containing platinum(IV) chloride complexions.

In this paper, we report the results of investigation of 9.5 µm AlGaAs/GaAs and strain compensated 4.7 µm AlInAs/InGaAs/InP QCLs. We also show the results for 9.5 µm lasers based on lattice matched AlInAs/InGaAs/InP structures. The developed GaAs/AlGaAs lasers show the record pulse powers of 6 W at 77 K and up to 50 mW at 300 K. This has been achieved by careful optimization of the MBE growth process and by applying a high reflectivity metallic coating to the back facet of the laser. The 9.5 µm AlInAs/InGaAs/InP lasers utilize AlInAs waveguide and were grown exclusively by MBE without MOCVD regrowth. The short wavelength, strain compensated QCLs were grown by MOCVD. They represent state-of-the-art parameters for the devices of their design. For epitaxial process control, the atomic-force microscopy (AFM), high resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the morphological and structural properties of the layers. The basic electro-optical characterization of the lasers is provided. We also present results of Green's function modeling of mid-IR QCLs and demonstrate the capability of non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) approach for sophisticated but still computationally effective simulation of laser's characteristics.

The paper deals with the mechanism of eutectic formation in a nickel coated aluminium system after heat treatment. The initial coating was produced from a nickel powder by means of high velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) spraying onto an aluminium sheet substrate. Specimens for investigations were manufactured immediately after the spraying. The specimens were heat-treated using a differential thermal analysis (DTA) apparatus up to the temperature of 700 or 900 °C and then cooled down to room temperature in argon atmosphere with a constant heating and cooling rate of 5 °C / min, under which Al-Al3Ni + Al3Ni hypereutectic alloys were formed within the initial substrate. Two different alloy microstructures consisting of intermetallic layers and coarse eutectic or an ultrafine well-dispersed eutectic were formed. Formation processes and resulting microstructures were studied by means of DTA, metallography, scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam, energy dispersive microanalysis and image analysis techniques.

As the presence of Sc2O3 and CeO2 is known to largely enhance the ionic conductivity in the temperature range of 600–800°C, compared with the conventional yttria-stabilized ZrO2, Sc2O3&CeO2-stabilized ZrO2 provide its applicability as electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells. The current study introduces the methodology to synthesize Sc2O3&CeO2-stabilized ZrO2 powders by using co-precipitation technique or high-temperature hydrothermal reaction, and further describes the structural characterization of the zirconia powders synthesized by the above-mentioned two methods. The co-precipitation technique was found to allow obtaining powders of cubic phase, whereas high-temperature hydrothermal synthesis results in the presence of a monoclinic phase as well. The scanning transmission electron microscope observations also confirm that the size of the synthesized ZrO2 powders in this study is found to be much smaller than that of commercially available powders.

Paper presents experimental results of laser-removal of deposits from mixed materials sample (mixes of C, W and Al on aluminum substrate) and investigation of the effects on morphology and microstructure of deposits and substrates. Two kinds of laser were applied – high power density Nd:YAG laser and high average power, but lower power density Yb:fiber laser. A constant repetition rate of 100 kHz fiber laser was used with variable pulse energy (0.5–1 mJ) to examine the phenomena in dependence of power density. To verify differences in the removal process, pulses of energy of 500 mJ in 3.5 ns of the Nd:YAG laser were used. The surface of examined sample was characterized by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) in order to monitor substrate/deposit morphology changes introduced by both lasers. In contrary to the Nd:YAG, the Yb:fiber laser does not cause substrate damages unless it operates at the power density above 10 6 W/cm 2 and does not produce macroscopic dust.

Fe-doped TiO2-supported photocatalytic materials prepared by the use of a mild ultrasound-assisted protocol have been found to possess excellent selectivities in glucose oxidation and total phenol mineralization. These materials were characterized by a number of techniques such as XRD, diffuse reflectance UV/Vis spectroscopy, N2 physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, SEM with X-ray microanalysis, HRTEM, and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The proposed synthesis method was found to have a significant effect on textural properties, morphology, and visible-light responsiveness of nanophotocatalysts. The dopant agent was found to be in the form of Fe3+ ions. The effects of the textural properties, together with the Fe presence and the adsorption ability of the material (acidic properties), seem to be involved in the optimum photocatalytic activities found for Fe–TiO2 supported on zeolite. In phenol photodegradation, although Fe doping demonstrated the detrimental effect on the conversion rate, an improvement in the direct mineralization of phenol to CO2 and water, particularly for the SiO2-supported photocatalyst, with a negligible content of toxic byproducts in water has been observed in comparison with commercially available Evonik P25.

A single step synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and their deposition on a graphene oxide (GO) sheets in a microflow reactor was investigated. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction in aqueous solution using dimethylamina borane (DMAB) as reductant. The influence of pH, initial concentration of gold(III) salt and flow rate was studied. The results demonstrate that microflow reactor is suitable for a single step synthesis and deposition of AuNPs. Size and size distribution depends on the flow rate and pH of the solution.

Sintered targets with mixed Cr and Si (10, 20, 30, 35 and 40 at. %) elemental powders were sputtered in mixture of argon and nitrogen on silicon substrates kept either at ambient temperature or at 600 °C. The microstructure was characterized using transmission electron microscopy, while mechanical properties were estimated based on hardness measurements. Observations showed that magnetron sputtering of targets with high silicon content on substrates at ambient temperature resulted in the formation of gradient nano-composites that are partly amorphous and partly crystalline. The amorphous phase dominated in the zone close to the substrate, while the nano-crystalline character was more pronounced nearer to the coating surface. The volume of crystalline phase in the coatings was decreasing with increasing silicon content to such an extent that those obtained from CrSi40 target were fully amorphous. The coatings deposited on substrates resistively heated up to 600 °C showed fine columnar microstructure with diameter decreasing with increasing silicon content, which changed to nano-composite and eventually fully amorphous for those obtained using CrSi35 and CrSi40 targets. The Elemental mapping by electron energy filtered imaging helped prove that in the nano-composite coatings the CrN–type crystalline phase and the amorphous phase are enriched respectively in chromium and silicon. The hardness of the coatings deposited at ambient temperature and characterized by mixed crystalline and amorphous microstructure was close to 20 GPa, except those containing layers enriched in chromium and silicon, which fall down to 15 GPa or even 10 GPa. The hardness of crystalline coatings deposited at 600 °C was increasing from 20 to 30–35 GPa with decreasing average column diameter from ∼40 to ∼35 and ∼25 nm (obtained from CrSi10, CrSi20 and CrSi30 targets). The higher silicon content in the coatings caused both further diminishing of the average crystallite size below 10 nm and simultaneous formation of an amorphous phase. The hardness of the coatings with such nano-composite microstructure was however decreased to ∼25 GPa. Finally, the hardness of fully amorphous coatings obtained from CrSi40 target under the same deposition conditions was at the level of 10 GPa. Our experiments proved that it is possible to obtain extremely fine columnar (Cr,Si)N coatings twice as hard as pure CrN, although a basic one target magnetron system and oxygen-contaminated CrSi targets were only used.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) after chemical surface functionalization on the interaction with a titanium surface. Two kinds of MWCNTs differing in terms of concentration of functional groups were deposited on the Ti surface using the electrophoretic deposition method (EPD). The study has shown the detailed analysis of the physicochemical properties of this form of carbon nanomaterial and received on their base coatings using various techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The adhesion of the MWCNTs coatings to the Ti surface was determined using the shear test method, according to standard ASTM F-1044-05. These results indicated that one type of MWCNTs characterized by a higher concentration of functional groups has better adhesion to the metal surface than the second type. Analysis of the MWCNT–metal interface using Raman spectroscopy and SEM and STEM indicates the presence of phase built of MWCNT and TiO2. This phase could be a type of nanocomposite that affects the improvement of the adhesion of MWCNT to the Ti surface.

Collection and ex situ studies of dust generated in controlled fusion devices during plasma operation are regularly carried out after experimental campaigns. Herewith results of the dust survey per ...

Results are presented for the dust survey performed at JET after the second experimental campaign with the ITER-Like Wall: 2013-2014. Samples were collected on adhesive stickers from several different positions in the divertor both on the tiles and on the divertor carrier. Brittle dust-forming deposits on test mirrors from the inner divertor wall were also studied. Comprehensive characterization accomplished by a wide range of high-resolution microscopy techniques, including focused ion beam, has led to the identification of several classes of particles: (i) beryllium flakes originating either from the Be coatings from the inner wall cladding or Be-rich mixed co-deposits resulting from material migration; (ii) beryllium droplets and splashes; (iii) tungsten and nickel-rich (from Inconel) droplets; (iv) mixed material layers with a various content of small (8-200 nm) W-Mo and Ni-based debris. A significant content of nitrogen from plasma edge cooling has been identified in all types of co-deposits. A comparison between particles collected after the first and second experimental campaign is also presented and discussed. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd. The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. In this study the catalytic properties of gold nanoparticles in electro-oxidation process of glucose, were investigated, taking into account, an influence of catalyst composition. Graphene oxide was applied and for electro-oxidation studies of glucose, cyclic voltamperometry was used. It was found that an application of graphene oxide sheets during catalyst synthesis have an influence on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) size and size distribution. It was confirmed that the application of composite catalyst consisting of graphane-AuNPs significantly changes electro-oxidation of glucose shifting the potential of oxidation to higher positive values and increasing oxidation current.
