International audience; In the Middle Paleolithic site of Remicourt, the Rocourt Tephra minerals were found as reworked material (cryptotephra) within the Humiferous Complex of Remicourt, which overlies the Rocourt Pedocomplex, the highest concentration of tephric material occurring in the middle part of the humiferous complex. Identification of the tephra is based on the mafic mineral suite, the morphology of glass shards and the chemical composition of mafic minerals: two types of clinopyroxene, an orthopyroxene, two types of amphibole and a chromian spinel. Volcanic glasses are typical blocky shards, and pyroxenes are fragments of megacrists, so that the material can be linked to one of the numerous phreatomagmatic eruptions that have taken place in the West Eifel volcanic field. Stratigraphical position of the tephra within the Humiferous Complex of Remicourt allows us to precise the time slice of the relevant eruption between 78 and 80 ka, during the final climatic phase of Weichselian Early Glacial encompassing Dansgaard-Oeschger interstadial 21 (MIS 5a).; Dans le site paléolithique moyen de Remicourt, les minéraux du Téphra de Rocourt se trouvent à l’état dispersé (cryptotéphra) dans le Complexe humifère de Remicourt qui surmonte le Pédocomplexe de Rocourt, et leur distribution stratigraphique présente un maximum de concentration dans la partie médiane du complexe humifère. L’identification du téphra est basée sur l’association minéralogique, la morphologie des verres et la composition chimique des minéraux mafiques : deux types de clinopyroxènes, un orthopyroxène, deux types d’amphiboles et du spinelle chromifère. Les verres volcaniques ont un faciès de hyaloclastes massifs, et les pyroxènes se présentent sous la forme d’éclats de mégacristaux, ce qui permet d’associer leur émission à une éruption phréatomagmatique dont il a été montré antérieurement que le volcan correspondant doit se situer dans l’Eifel occidental. La position stratigraphique du téphra au sein du Complexe humifère de Remicourt permet de restreindre l’incertitude sur la période de l’éruption entre 78 et 80 ka, au cours de la phase climatique terminale du Début Glaciaire weichselien, correspondant à l’interstade de Dansgaard-Oeschger 21 (SIM 5a).

International audience; Because of intensive exploitation of the Goldberg volcano (West Eifel Volcanic Field, Germany), in the past three decades, additional information has been obtained on its volcanological history and its products. Two important explosive events are recorded in the stratigraphic pile. An attempt is made to trace tephra of the volcano, by sampling soils in plateau position all around the volcano. However, the sampled sites also contained minerals from the Laacher See tephra that blanketed the area as demonstrated by the occurrence of a layer in the nearby Bragphenn peat bog. We performed electronic microprobe analyses, to discriminate between the pyroxenes from Goldberg and those from the Laacher See. Since the quantities of minerals drop rapidly away from the volcano, the Goldberg tephra cannot be traced beyond some 6 km. Nevertheless the dispersion is more important in westwards so that further discovery of the tephra can be expected especially in Upper Belgium. Our results allow us to shift the minimal age of the eruption from 11.6 ka BP to 25 ka BP.; En profitant de l’exploitation intensive du volcan Goldberg (Eifel occidental, Allemagne) au cours des trois dernières décennies, des informations nouvelles sont apportées concernant l’histoire volcanique de l’appareil et de ses produits. Deux importantes phases explosives sont attestées dans sa lithostratigraphie. En l’absence d’affleurements de téphra en place en dehors du volcan, la recherche des lobes est abordée par l’étude des concentrations de minéraux dans des sols actuels en position de plateau. Toutefois les sites étudiés contiennent également des produits du volcan du Laacher See qui sont retombés sur l’Eifel et l’Ardenne (Belgique), et dont nous avons découvert une lamine en place dans une tourbière locale (Bragphenn). En raison du mélange des téphras dans les échantillons de sols actuels, des analyses ont été réalisées au moyen de la microsonde électronique pour distinguer les pyroxènes du téphra du Goldberg de ceux du Laacher See. La méthode n’a pas permis de suivre le téphra à plus de 6 km du volcan, car la concentration de ses minéraux est trop faible au-delà. Néanmoins la dispersion étant plus importante vers l’ouest, c’est donc en haute Belgique que des découvertes ultérieures de ce téphra sont attendues. Nos résultats permettent de vieillir l’âge minimal de l’éruption de 11,6 ka BP à 25 ka BP.

International audience; A new study of the composition of the Eltville Tephra is performed for the three sites Lixhe/Belgium, Ringen/Germany and Eltville/Germany (previous stratotype). This tephra is a precise stratigraphical marker dated at about 20 ka and intercalated in situ in Upper Weichselien loess in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. Since most of the authors have identified the Eltville Tephra after its dark grey colour in yellowish loess body, the correlation has in some cases been doubted so that geochemistry of the material should be used to take position. We analyse the pyroclasts and the mafic minerals of the tephra (clinopyroxene, olivine and amphibole). The volcanic glass is totally altered to illite, but the minerals show a clear basaltic alkaline magmatic signature. The tephra resulted from a strong initial activity of a basaltic volcano. The origin of the tephra would be the East Eifel volcanic field.

International audience; Multidisciplinary investigations have been carried out on sections and sediment cores from a lake and peat bogs in the Western Cordillera in the Central Andes of Southern Peru, around Nevados Ampato, Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca volcanic massif. More than 850,000 inhabitants of the city of Arequipa and the Colca valley are concerned by further activities of those volcanoes. The aim of the current study is to complete the Holocene tephrostratigraphical model for southern Peru in which about 40 tephras are distributed within the past 50,000 years. The tephras described in this paper have been discovered in two sites: the large peat-bog of Sallalli at the southern piedmont of the Sabancaya volcano, and the Laguna Mucurca, a salar (brine lake) 15 km W of Nevado Ampato. The Sallalli peat-bog is located in a glacially shaped piedmont, which has been dammed by recent moraines and lava flows 10 km SE of the summit of Nevado Sabancaya. The peat section, which spans a large part of the Holocene period (since ca. 9650 yr), encompasses at least five tephras. The most recent ones consist in plinian ash-falls caracterized by rhyolitic glass shards that can be linked either with the AD 1600 eruption of the Huaynaputina volcano (120 km to the ESE) or with an eruption of the Misti volcano (60 km to the SE) that occurred between 800 cal BC and 200 cal AD. The other tephras consist in phreotomagmatic products of local origin likely erupted by the Sabancaya volcano, or by the Ampato volcano, within the periods bracketed as follows: (i) 150 cal AD and 100 cal BC; (ii) 150 and 420 cal BC; (iii) 2100 and 2500 cal BC; and (iv) 7420 et 7750 cal BC. The recent lacustrine deposits of the Laguna Mucurca host traces of a plinian ash-fall from Huaynaputina volcano and a scoriaceous tephra of phreatomagmatic origin. The latter was emplaced between 920 and 760 cal BC. This tephra has probably been produced by one of the neighbouring cones located in the field of monogenic volcanoes close to Huambo on the southern edge of the Río Colca valley.; Des recherches multidisciplinaires ont été réalisées à partir de coupes et carottes extraites de tourbières et d’un lac, au Pérou méridional, dans la région volcanique du massif des Nevados Ampato, Sabancaya et Hualca Hualca, proche du canyon du Río Colca et de la ville d’Arequipa. L’objectif majeur de la présente recherche est de compléter la partie holocène d’un modèle téphrostratigraphique du Pérou méridional, portant sur les cinquante derniers milliers d’années. Les sites étudiés sont plus particulièrement la grande tourbière de Sallalli et les rives de la Laguna Mucurca. La tourbière de Sallalli se trouve sur le piémont oriental du Massif Ampato-Sabancaya ; elle a été barrée par des moraines remontant à la dernière glaciation ainsi que par des coulées de lave au SE. La séquence tourbeuse de Sallalli comprend au moins cinq téphras. Les niveaux les plus récents consistent en retombées pliniennes de verres rhyolithiques dont l’attribution est discutée entre l’éruption du Huaynaputina en 1600AD et une autre du Misti qui a eu lieu entre 800 cal BC et 200 cal AD. Les autres téphras sont des produits hétérogènes d’origine phréatomagmatique émis probablement par le Sabancaya, voire l’Ampato pendant les périodes respectives suivantes : 150 cal AD à 100 cal BC, 150 à 420 cal BC, 2100 à 2500 cal BC et 7420 à 7750 cal BC. Les dépôts lacustres récents de la Laguna Mucurca à l’ouest du Nevado Ampato renferment notamment un téphra hétérogène d’une éruption phréatomagmatique, qui aurait eu lieu entre 920 et 760 cal BC ; il serait issu de l’un des cônes proches, situé dans le champ des volcans monogénétiques de Huambo sur la marge sud du Río Colca.

International audience; This paper details the mineralogy and the chemistry of the Llaima pumice deposit from in southern Chile. This andesitic to dacitic pumice was erupted from Llaima Volcano. This eruption took place in the early Holocene through at least two pulses that are well recorded in deposits around the Icalma-Galletué area. In 2001, the Llaima pumice was sampled from six outcrops. The mineralogy has been studied under polarizing microscope and electron microprobe (EPMA).The Llaima pumice contains phenocrystals of orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, olivine and titano-magnetite. The olivine is characterized by two chemically distinguishable populations (i.e. Fo32 to Fo35 and Fo76 to Fo82). The respective chemical compositions of these two distinct olivines emphazise that the eruption was triggered by magma mixing.
