In this article, the authors clarified the naming characteristics of Poaceae by comparing the Mongolian names and the academic names. While scientific names are hierarchical and do not overlap, folk names can be classified and named by ears or tip, awns, roots, at the same time, therefore multiple plant names can be used as one species.

2. Practical Techniques for Vision-Language Segmentation Model in Remote Sensing

Abstract: Traditional semantic segmentation models often struggle with poor generalizability in zero-shot scenarios such as recognizing attributes unseen in the training labels. On the other hands, language-vision models (VLMs) have shown promise in improving performance on zero-shot tasks by leveraging semantic information from textual inputs and fusing this information with visual features. However, existing VLM-based methods do not perform as effectively on remote sensing data due to the lack of such data in their training datasets. In this paper, we introduce a two-stage fine-tuning approach for a VLM-based segmentation model using a large remote sensing image-caption dataset, which we created using an existing image-caption model. Additionally, we propose a modified decoder and a visual prompt technique using a saliency map to enhance segmentation results. Through these methods, we achieve superior segmentation performance on remote sensing data, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach.

3. Droplet collection efficiencies inferred from satellite retrievals constrain effective radiative forcing of aerosol–cloud interactions

Abstract: Process-oriented observational constraints for the anthropogenic effective radiative forcing due to aerosol–cloud interactions (ERFaci) are highly desirable because the uncertainty associated with ERFaci poses a significant challenge to climate prediction. The contoured frequency by optical depth diagram (CFODD) analysis supports the evaluation of model representation of cloud liquid-to-rain conversion processes because the slope of a CFODD, generated from joint MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-CloudSat cloud retrievals, provides an estimate of cloud droplet collection efficiency in single-layer warm liquid clouds. Here, we present an updated CFODD analysis as an observational constraint on the ERFaci due to warm rain processes and apply it to the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 2 (E3SMv2). A series of sensitivity experiments shows that E3SMv2 droplet collection efficiencies and ERFaci are highly sensitive to autoconversion, i.e., the rate of mass transfer from cloud liquid to rain, yielding a strong correlation between the CFODD slope and the shortwave component of ERFaci (ERFaciSW; Pearson's R=-0.91). E3SMv2's CFODD slope (0.20 ± 0.04) is in agreement with observations (0.20 ± 0.03). The strong sensitivity of ERFaciSW to the CFODD slope provides a useful constraint on highly uncertain warm rain processes, whereby ERFaciSW, constrained by MODIS-CloudSat, is estimated by calculating the intercept of the linear association between the ERFaciSW and the CFODD slopes, using the MODIS-CloudSat CFODD slope as a reference.

Abstract: The original version of this article was published in Japanese by the Japan-Mongolia Association in the journal “Japan and Mongolia” (Vol. 55, pp. 76–101). Permission to use photographs was obtained from the American Museum of Natural History for academic purposes only. In this version appendix (explanatory comments about travelers such as Potanin, Pozdneev, etc.), that was in the Japanese original, is omitted. In this article, the authors focused on describing wood, lumber, and logs. It is necessary to distinguish these concepts from each other. Here, timber refers to trees as a resource, as well as the area of a small forest. Wood is one of the most popular materials for manufacturing. Lumber is produced from it. Lumber is sawn and prepared wood, including firewood. They vary in shape, size, pattern, differences and physical properties (boards, logs, beams and whetstones). A log is a sawn tree, only cleared of husks. In addition, the authors would like to thank courtesy for using the photographs.

5. Investment decision support for business sustainability improvement based on flood inundation simulations with a variety of extreme rainfall scenarios

Abstract: In recent years, heavy rainfall disasters have occurred frequently in Japan, which increases the importance for private companies to take flood countermeasures to prepare improved business continuity plans (BCPs). Although river authorities have published flood hazard maps for design rainfall and probable maximum rainfall in Japan, hazard information for floods with other return periods is also required for the target business facilities to make cost-effective plans and investment decisions based on flood risk assessment. In order to overcome the situation where public flood hazard maps do not provide enough information for risk-based business continuity planning, we developed a method to provide tailored flood risk information for a business site based on a series of flood inundation simulations for rainfall scenarios with various return periods in the expected inundation area of the Tama River, Tokyo, Japan. Calculated results showed that the inundation characteristics highly depend on the topographic features of the flood plain, suggesting the importance of assessment at a respective business site. We also present an example of the application of the proposed method of simulation results in designing the BCP.

7. Impacts of a double-moment bulk cloud microphysics scheme (NDW6-G23) on aerosol fields in NICAM.19 with a global 14 km grid resolution

Abstract: In accordance with progression in current capabilities towards high-resolution approaches, applying a convective-permitting resolution to global aerosol models helps comprehend how complex cloud–precipitation systems interact with aerosols. This study investigates the impacts of a double-moment bulk cloud microphysics scheme, i.e., NICAM Double-moment bulk Water 6 developed in this study (NDW6-G23), on the spatiotemporal distribution of aerosols in the Nonhydrostatic ICosahedral Atmospheric Model as part of the version-19 series (NICAM.19) with 14 km grid spacing. The mass concentrations and optical thickness of the NICAM-simulated aerosols are generally comparable to those obtained from in situ measurements. However, for some aerosol species, especially dust and sulfate, the differences between experiments of NDW6 and of the NICAM single-moment bulk module with six water categories (NSW6) were larger than those between experiments with different horizontal resolutions (14 and 56 km grid spacing), as shown in a previous study. The simulated aerosol burdens using NDW6 are generally lower than those using NSW6; the net instantaneous radiative forcing due to aerosol–radiation interaction (IRFari) is estimated to be −1.36 W m−2 (NDW6) and −1.62 W m−2 (NSW6) in the global annual mean values at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). The net effective radiative forcing due to anthropogenic aerosol–radiation interaction (ERFari) is estimated to be −0.19 W m−2 (NDW6) and −0.23 W m−2 (NSW6) in the global annual mean values at the TOA. This difference among the experiments using different cloud microphysics modules, i.e., 0.26 W m−2 or 16 % difference in IRFari values and 0.04 W m−2 or 16 % difference in ERFari values, is attributed to a different ratio of column precipitation to the sum of the column precipitation and column liquid cloud water, which strongly determines the magnitude of wet deposition in the simulated aerosols. Since the simulated ratios in the NDW6 experiment are larger than those of the NSW6 result, the scavenging effect of the simulated aerosols in the NDW6 experiment is larger than that in the NSW6 experiment. A large difference between the experiments is also found in the aerosol indirect effect (AIE), i.e., the net effective radiative forcing due to aerosol–cloud interaction (ERFaci) from the present to preindustrial days, which is estimated to be −1.28 W m−2 (NDW6) and −0.73 W m−2 (NSW6) in global annual mean values. The magnitude of the ERFaci value in the NDW6 experiment is larger than that in the NSW6 result due to the differences in both the Twomey effect and the susceptibility of the simulated cloud water to the simulated aerosols between NDW6 and NSW6. Therefore, this study shows the importance of the impacts of the cloud microphysics module on aerosol distributions through both aerosol wet deposition and the AIE.

Abstract: Marine diazotrophs convert dinitrogen (N2) gas into bioavailable nitrogen (N), supporting life in the global ocean. In 2012, the first version of the global oceanic diazotroph database (version 1) was published. Here, we present an updated version of the database (version 2), significantly increasing the number of in situ diazotrophic measurements from 13 565 to 55 286. Data points for N2 fixation rates, diazotrophic cell abundance, and nifH gene copy abundance have increased by 184 %, 86 %, and 809 %, respectively. Version 2 includes two new data sheets for the nifH gene copy abundance of non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs and cell-specific N2 fixation rates. The measurements of N2 fixation rates approximately follow a log-normal distribution in both version 1 and version 2. However, version 2 considerably extends both the left and right tails of the distribution. Consequently, when estimating global oceanic N2 fixation rates using the geometric means of different ocean basins, version 1 and version 2 yield similar rates (43–57 versus 45–63 Tg N yr−1; ranges based on one geometric standard error). In contrast, when using arithmetic means, version 2 suggests a significantly higher rate of 223±30 Tg N yr−1 (mean ± standard error; same hereafter) compared to version 1 (74±7 Tg N yr−1). Specifically, substantial rate increases are estimated for the South Pacific Ocean (88±23 versus 20±2 Tg N yr−1), primarily driven by measurements in the southwestern subtropics, and for the North Atlantic Ocean (40±9 versus 10±2 Tg N yr−1). Moreover, version 2 estimates the N2 fixation rate in the Indian Ocean to be 35±14 Tg N yr−1, which could not be estimated using version 1 due to limited data availability. Furthermore, a comparison of N2 fixation rates obtained through different measurement methods at the same months, locations, and depths reveals that the conventional 15N2 bubble method yields lower rates in 69 % cases compared to the new 15N2 dissolution method. This updated version of the database can facilitate future studies in marine ecology and biogeochemistry. 9. LONG-TERM OUTCOMES WITH ISATUXIMAB-CARFILZOMIB-DEXAMETHASONE IN RELAPSED MULTIPLE MYELOMA PATIENTS WITH 1Q21+ STATUS: UPDATED RESULTS FROM THE PHASE 3 IKEMA STUDY

Abstract: Objectives: Gain or amplification of 1q21 (1q21+, ≥3 copies), a chromosomal abnormality frequently observed in multiple myeloma (MM), has a negative impact on prognosis due to its potential involvement in resistance to MM therapy and disease progression. In this subgroup analysis of IKEMA, we evaluated efficacy of isatuximab-carfilzomib-dexamethasone (Isa-Kd) in patients (pts) with 1q21+ status (with or without high-risk chromosomal abnormalities [HRCA]) and related subgroups – isolated 1q21+ (≥ 3 copies without HRCA), gain(1q21), amp(1q21) – at long-term follow-up (44.2 months). Methods: Pts with 1–3 prior lines of therapy were randomized to Isa-Kd (n = 179) or Kd (n = 123). Assessment was prespecified (at 30% cutoff by FISH) for 1q21+ status as ≥3 copies, gain(1q21) as 3 copies, and amp(1q21) as ≥4 copies. Results: In the Isa-Kd and Kd arms, 41.9% and 42.3% of pts had 1q21+ status, 26.3% and 25.2% isolated 1q21+, 24.0% and 30.1% gain(1q21), 17.9% and 12.2% amp(1q21) respectively. Greater progression-free survival (PFS) benefit was achieved with Isa-Kd vs Kd in pts with 1q21+ status (hazard ratio [HR] 0.58, 95% CI 0.37–0.92) and in pts with isolated 1q21+, gain(1q21), or amp(1q21). Responses deepened by adding Isa to Kd, with increased rates of very good partial response or better (≥VGPR), complete response or better (≥CR), minimal residual disease negativity (MRD-), and MRD- ≥CR. Discussion: In the prespecified, long-term analysis of the Phase 3 IKEMA trial in relapsed MM pts, treatment with Isa-Kd showed continued, significant improvement in PFS compared to Kd (HR 0.58; 95.4% CI 0.42–0.79). There was a meaningful increase in the depth of response (≥CR 44.1% vs 28.5%; MRD- 33.5% vs 15.4%, MRD- ≥CR 26.3% vs 12.2%), and a manageable safety profile. The present study demonstrated that Isa-Kd led to deeper responses, with higher ≥VGPR rates, MRD-, and MRD- ≥CR rates in 1q21+ patients (with or without HRCA), isolated 1q21+, gain(1q21), or amp(1q21) compared to Kd. These long-term findings support Isa-Kd as an effective treatment option for patients with relapsed MM, including 1q21+ abnormalities and a higher risk of progression. Conclusions: 1q21 abnormalities may affect PFS in MM pts. Our results at long-term follow-up of pts with 1q21+ status (with or without HRCA) in the IKEMA study continue to show greater PFS benefit and deeper responses with Isa-Kd than Kd, consistent with the overall population and earlier 1q21+ subgroup interim analyses. Thus, they support Isa-Kd as an effective treatment option also for difficult-to-treat, 1q21+ pts with relapsed MM.

10. Gate-tunable resistance drops related to local superconducting gaps in thin TaS2 layers on SrTiO3 substrates

Abstract: Strontium titanate [SrTiO3 (STO)], a perovskite oxide with an extremely high gate-tunable dielectric constant (ε) due to quantum paraelectric phases, is attracting considerable attention for yielding various physical phenomena when two-dimensional (2D) layers are integrated. Superconductivity is such a typical phenomenon. However, the influence of the STO substrates on enhancing transition temperatures (Tc) for (atomically) thin 2D flakes attached to them has been rarely investigated. Here, we report gate-tunable and gradual four-terminal resistance drops with critical onset T (TCR) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) spectra in devices comprising thin TaS2 flakes attached on monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) spacer/STO substrates. Observation of STS spectra confirms the presence of local superconducting gaps Δ (∼1.5 meV) with transition T (TΔC) three-times higher than previous reports of Tc under absent pressure and strong position dependence of Δ. Depending on Δ on back gate voltages (Vbg) and magnetic fields, there is a strong correlation between TCR and the onset Tc of superconductivity, implying an enhancement of approximately five times compared with the previous highest-onset Tc values without pressure as the applied Vbg increases. The high onset Tc and Δ are discussed based on screening of the long-range Coulomb interaction (CI) due to the high-ε of SrTiO3, while the short-ranged CI remains strong in the 2D limit, causing the superconductivity. Using a monolayer hBN/SrTiO3 substrate with Vbg opens doors to Tc enhancement in thin superconducting layers integrated on it and wide application due to the solid-state high-ε substrates.

11. Evaluation of the spectral misalignment on the Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer/multi-spectral imager cloud product

Abstract: A cloud identification and profiling algorithm is being developed for the multi-spectral imager (MSI), which is one of the four instruments that the Earth Clouds, Aerosols, and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) spacecraft will feature. During recent work, we noticed that the MSI response function could shift substantially among some wavelengths (0.67 and 1.65 µm bands) owing to the spectral misalignment (SMILE), in which a shift in the center wavelength appears as a distortion in the spectral image. We evaluated how SMILE affects the cloud retrieval product qualitatively and quantitatively. We chose four detector pixels from bands 1 and 3 with the nadir pixel as the reference to elucidate how the SMILE error affects the cloud optical thickness (τ) and effective cloud droplet radius (re) by simulating the MSI forward radiation with Comprehensive Analysis Program for Cloud Optical Measurement (CAPCOM). We also evaluated the error in simulated scenes from a global cloud system-resolving model and a satellite simulator to measure the effect on actual observation scenes. For typical shallow warm clouds (τ = 8, re = 8 µm), the SMILE error on the cloud retrieval was not significant in most cases (up to 6 % error). For typical deep convective clouds (τ = 8, re = 40 µm), the SMILE error on the cloud retrieval was even less significant in most cases (up to 4 % error). Moreover, our results from two oceanic scenes using the synthetic MSI data agreed well with the forward radiation simulation, indicating that the SMILE error was generally within 10 %. Generally, this negligible impact of the SMILE is true for water surfaces, but it still needs to be investigated further for land surfaces in future works.

12. Prediction model of elastic constants of BCC high-entropy alloys based on first-principles calculations and machine learning techniques

Abstract: By combining first-principles electronic structure calculations and machine learning techniques, prediction models of elastic constants are constructed for BCC high-entropy alloys (HEA) containing 5 different elements chosen from 3d, 4d and 5d transition metals with equal concentration. Three independent elastic constants of randomly selected 2555 HEAs are calculated by using the full potential Korringa–Kohn–Rostoker (FPKKR) method with taking configurational disorder into account within the coherent potential approximation (CPA). From the obtained database of the elastic constants, prediction models are constructed by the linear regression using the descriptors generated by the linearly independent descriptor generation (LIDG) method. By optimizing the selection of descriptors based on the genetic algorithm (GA), prediction errors of 10.2 GPa, 4.5 GPa, 2.4 GPa and 7.7 GPa are achieved for bulk modulus $$B$$, shear moduli $$c{^{\prime}}$$, $${c_{44}}$$ and Young’s modulus $$E$$, respectively. By using the generated model we propose some HEAs with low $$E$$. It is well known that the magnitude of $$E$$ is closely related to the shape of the calculated density of states (DOS). This statement is reconfirmed within the BCC HEAs, i.e., HEAs with larger DOS at the Fermi level shows smaller Young’s modulus and vice versa.

Abstract: Abstract Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector is a critical tool for gene delivery through its durable transgene expression and safety profile. Among many serotypes, AAV2-retro is typically utilized for dissecting neural circuits with its retrograde functionality. However, this vector requires a relatively long-term incubation period (over 2 weeks) to obtain enough gene expression levels presumably due to low efficiency in gene transduction. Here, we aimed to enhance transgene expression efficiency of AAV2-retro vectors by substituting multiple tyrosine residues with phenylalanines (YF mutations) in the virus capsid, which is previously reported to improve the transduction efficiency of AAV2-infected cells by evading host cell responses. We found that AAV2-retro with YF mutations (AAV2-retroYF)-mediated transgene expression was significantly enhanced in the primary culture of murine cortical neurons at 1 week after application, comparable to that of the conventional AAV2-retro at 2 week after application. Moreover, transgene expressions in the retrogradely labeled neurons mediated by AAV2-retroYF were significantly increased both in the cortico-cortical circuits and in the subcortical circuits in vivo, while the retrograde functionality of AAV2-retroYF was equally effective as that of AAV2-retro. Our data indicate that YF mutations boost AAV2-retro-mediated retrograde gene transduction in vivo and suggest that the AAV2-retroYF should be useful for efficient targeting of the projection-defined neurons, which is suited to applications for dissecting neural circuits during development as well as future clinical applications.

Abstract: Abstract A clear air turbulence (CAT) occurred on 30 December 2020 over Tokyo, Japan. The CAT was largely generated by breaking Kelvin‐Helmholtz (KH) instability waves in the free atmosphere. A regional numerical weather prediction model simulated the event with fine resolution (35 m). Onboard‐recorded flight data and a flight simulation were utilized to validate the meteorological simulation. The locations of the reproduced strong turbulence agree well with the regions where flights encountered turbulence on that day. In a simulation with the finest resolution, the KH waves and their breaking were resolved. When the resolution was finer, the turbulent eddies were stronger, causing meteorological effects on the airplanes. The response of a virtual airplane to the simulated turbulence was estimated using a flight simulation. By comparing onboard‐recorded data with virtual flight data, we confirm that turbulent eddies are reasonably reproduced.

Abstract: We propose a novel method to constrain the tidal quality factor, $Q^{\prime} $ , from an observed nonsynchronized star–planet system consisting of a slowly rotating low-mass star and a close-in Jovian planet, taking into account the coevolution of stellar spin and planetary orbit due to the tidal interaction and the magnetic braking. On the basis of dynamical system theory, the track of the coevolution of angular momentum from the fast-rotator regime for such a system exhibits the existence of a forbidden region in the Ω _orb –Ω _spin plane, where Ω _spin and Ω _orb denote the angular velocity of the stellar spin and planetary orbit, respectively. The forbidden region is determined primarily by the strength of the tidal interaction. By comparing the (Ω _orb , Ω _spin ) of a single star–planet system to the forbidden region, we can constrain the tidal quality factor regardless of the evolutionary history of the system. The application of this method to the star–planet system NGTS-10–NGTS-10 b gives $Q^{\prime} \gtrsim {10}^{8}$ , leading to a tight upper bound on the tidal torque. Since this cannot be explained by previous theoretical predictions for nonsynchronized star–planet systems, our result requires mechanisms that suppress the tidal interaction in such systems.

Abstract: We investigate nonideal magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) effects in the chromosphere on the solar wind by performing MHD simulations for Alfvén-wave-driven winds, explicitly including ohmic and ambipolar diffusion. We find that MHD waves are significantly damped in the chromosphere by ambipolar diffusion so that the Alfvénic Poynting flux that reaches the corona is substantially reduced. As a result, the coronal temperature and the mass-loss rate of the solar wind are considerably reduced, compared with those obtained from an ideal MHD case, which is indicative of the great importance of the nonideal MHD effects in the solar atmosphere. However, the temperature and the mass-loss rate are recovered by a small increase in the convection-originated velocity perturbation at the photosphere because of the sensitive dependence of the ambipolar diffusion and reflection of Alfvén waves on the physical properties of the chromosphere. We also find that density perturbations in the corona are reduced by the ambipolar diffusion of Alfvén waves in the chromosphere because the nonlinear generation of compressible perturbations is suppressed.

Abstract: We investigate the role of magnetic field on the gas dynamics in a galactic bulge region by three-dimensional simulations with radiative cooling and heating. While a high-temperature corona with T > 10 ^6 K is formed in the halo regions, the temperature near the midplane is ≲10 ^4 K following the thermal equilibrium curve determined by the radiative cooling and heating. Although the thermal energy of the interstellar gas is lost by radiative cooling, the saturation level of the magnetic field strength does not significantly depend on the radiative cooling and heating. The magnetic field strength is amplified to 10 μ G on average and reaches several hundred microgauss locally. We find the formation of magnetically dominated regions at midlatitudes in the case with the radiative cooling and heating, which is not seen in the case without radiative effect. The vertical thickness of the midlatitude regions is 50–150 pc at the radial location of 0.4–0.8 kpc from the Galactic center, which is comparable to the observed vertical distribution of neutral atomic gas. When we take the average of different components of energy density integrated over the galactic bulge region, the magnetic energy is comparable to the thermal energy. We conclude that the magnetic field plays a substantial role in controlling the dynamical and thermal properties of the galactic bulge region.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline alloy samples with the same chemistry (Fe86B13Cu1) but with a range of mean grain sizes were prepared in order to investigate the effect of the grain size (D) on the core losses in nanocrystalline alloys. The core loss was measured on an Epstein frame in a frequency range between 10 Hz and 30 kHz. The measured core loss was separated into 3 parts, i.e. the hysteresis loss, classical eddy current loss and the excess loss. The classical eddy current loss is only a minor component due to the small thickness and moderately high electrical resistivity of the samples. Both the coercivity and the cycle hysteresis loss are found to follow roughly a D3 dependence. The excess loss at the maximum polarization (Jm) between 0.6 and 1.0 T is described universally by a simple power dependence of (Jm·f)n with an exponent of about 1.4 over a wide frequency (f) range between 10 Hz to 30 kHz. The excess loss at low frequencies appears almost independent of the grain size. Thus, the grain size effect on the total loss at low frequencies is attributable to the change in the hysteresis loss which reflects the static coercivity. However, the excess loss at 30 kHz shows a clear increase with an increase in D, indicating that the excess loss also becomes influential to the grain size dependence of the total core loss at high frequencies.

Abstract: We measured a set of π±Σ∓, π0Σ0, and π−Σ0 invariant mass spectra below and above the K¯N mass threshold in K−-induced reactions on deuteron. The measured πΣ mass spectral shape is well reproduced via the two-step mechanism, i.e., a neutron knocked out at a forward angle from a deuteron by an incident K−, with the K¯ recoiled backward reacting with the residual nucleon to produce π and Σ. We deduced the S-wave K¯N→πΣ and K¯N→K¯N scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a K¯N and πΣ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to Λ(1405) is located at 1417.7−7.4+6.0 (fitting errors)−1.0+1.1 (systematic errors) + [−26.1−7.9+6.0 (fitting errors)−2.0+1.7 (systematic errors)] i MeV/c2, closer to the K¯N mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group.

Abstract: Interorganelle contacts and communications are increasingly recognized to play a vital role in cellular function and homeostasis. In particular, the mitochondria–endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane contact site (MAM) is known to regulate ion and lipid transfer, as well as signaling and organelle dynamics. However, the regulatory mechanisms of MAM formation and their function are still elusive. Here, we identify mitochondrial Lon protease (LonP1), a highly conserved mitochondrial matrix protease, as a new MAM tethering protein. The removal of LonP1 substantially reduces MAM formation and causes mitochondrial fragmentation. Furthermore, deletion of LonP1 in the cardiomyocytes of mouse heart impairs MAM integrity and mitochondrial fusion and activates the unfolded protein response within the ER (UPRER). Consequently, cardiac-specific LonP1 deficiency causes aberrant metabolic reprogramming and pathological heart remodeling. These findings demonstrate that LonP1 is a novel MAM-localized protein orchestrating MAM integrity, mitochondrial dynamics, and UPRER, offering exciting new insights into the potential therapeutic strategy for heart failure.

Abstract: Abstract Low-frequency 1q21.1 distal deletion and duplication copy number variant (CNV) carriers are predisposed to multiple neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia, autism and intellectual disability. Human carriers display a high prevalence of micro- and macrocephaly in deletion and duplication carriers, respectively. The underlying brain structural diversity remains largely unknown. We systematically called CNVs in 38 cohorts from the large-scale ENIGMA-CNV collaboration and the UK Biobank and identified 28 1q21.1 distal deletion and 22 duplication carriers and 37,088 non-carriers (48% male) derived from 15 distinct magnetic resonance imaging scanner sites. With standardized methods, we compared subcortical and cortical brain measures (all) and cognitive performance (UK Biobank only) between carrier groups also testing for mediation of brain structure on cognition. We identified positive dosage effects of copy number on intracranial volume (ICV) and total cortical surface area, with the largest effects in frontal and cingulate cortices, and negative dosage effects on caudate and hippocampal volumes. The carriers displayed distinct cognitive deficit profiles in cognitive tasks from the UK Biobank with intermediate decreases in duplication carriers and somewhat larger in deletion carriers—the latter potentially mediated by ICV or cortical surface area. These results shed light on pathobiological mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disorders, by demonstrating gene dose effect on specific brain structures and effect on cognitive function.

Abstract: Deficient minerals in overabundant populations could act as an attractant to cull sika deer (Cervus nippon). Because selective culling of female deer is reported to be effective in reducing sika deer populations, it is particularly important to clarify the differences in mineral requirements between males and females. Here, using global plant trait data and a published list of sika deer feed plants in Japan, we estimated whether feed plants provide sika deer sufficient sodium (Na), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), and compared the results between males and females. An analysis of 191 feed plant species suggested that feed plants can provide sufficient Mg, whereas sufficient Na and Ca is not always provided, especially when the intake is small or the deer large. Na deficiency was more intense for lactating females than males, suggesting that Na can be an effective attractant for selectively culling female deer. In summary, this study demonstrated that sika deer in Japan might require extra Na and Ca sources in addition to feed plants, and therefore these minerals could be useful for developing effective culling methods.

Abstract: In most mammalian species, there is a general principle known as the 'one-half rule', in which litter size is half the number of mammaries. However, arboreal squirrels deviate from this rule and small litter size (mainly two to three), whereas ground squirrels adhere to the 'one-half rule' in their litter size patterns. In this study, we showed that spring litter sizes of Japanese flying squirrels were typical of arboreal squirrels, while summer litter sizes were comparable to those of ground squirrels, according to the conventional rule. Thus, Japanese flying squirrels have characteristics of both arboreal and ground squirrel species in terms of litter size. 33. Snow-induced buffering in aerosol–cloud interactions

Abstract: Complex aerosol–cloud–precipitation interactions lead to large differences in estimates of aerosol impacts on climate among general circulation models (GCMs) and satellite retrievals. Typically, precipitating hydrometeors are treated diagnostically in most GCMs, and their radiative effects are ignored. Here, we quantify how the treatment of precipitation influences the simulated effective radiative forcing due to aerosol–cloud interactions (ERFaci) using a state-of-the-art GCM with a two-moment prognostic precipitation scheme that incorporates the radiative effect of precipitating particles, and we investigate how microphysical process representations are related to macroscopic climate effects. Prognostic precipitation substantially weakens the magnitude of ERFaci (by approximately 54 %) compared with the traditional diagnostic scheme, and this is the result of the increased longwave (warming) and weakened shortwave (cooling) components of ERFaci. The former is attributed to additional adjustment processes induced by falling snow, and the latter stems largely from riming of snow by collection of cloud droplets. The significant reduction in ERFaci does not occur without prognostic snow, which contributes mainly by buffering the cloud response to aerosol perturbations through depleting cloud water via collection. Prognostic precipitation also alters the regional pattern of ERFaci, particularly over northern midlatitudes where snow is abundant. The treatment of precipitation is thus a highly influential controlling factor of ERFaci, contributing more than other uncertain “tunable” processes related to aerosol–cloud–precipitation interactions. This change in ERFaci caused by the treatment of precipitation is large enough to explain the existing difference in ERFaci between GCMs and observations.

So far, understanding “systems” of living organisms have been chiefly promoted by understanding the underlying biomolecules such as genes and proteins, and their intra- and inter-relationships and regulations. After a long period of sophistication, biophysics and molecular biology have established a general framework for understanding ‘molecular systems’ in organisms without regard to species, so that the findings of fly studies can be applied to mouse studies. However, little attention has been paid to exploring “phenotypic systems” in organisms, and thus its general framework remains poorly understood. Here I review concepts, methods, and case studies using butterfly and moth wing patterns to explore phenotypes as systems. First, I present a unifying framework for phenotypic traits as systems, termed multi-component systems. Second, I describe how to define components of phenotypic systems, and also show how to quantify interactions among phenotypic parts. Subsequently, I introduce the concept of the macro-evolutionary process, which illustrates how to generate complex traits. In this point, I also introduce mathematical methods, “phylogenetic comparative methods”, which provide stochastic processes along molecular phylogeny as bifurcated paths to quantify trait evolution. Finally, I would like to propose two key concepts, macro-evolutionary pathways and genotype-phenotype loop (GP loop), which must be needed for the next directions. I hope these efforts on phenotypic biology will become one major target in biophysics and create the next generations of textbooks. 35. Nanocrystalline soft magnetic materials produced by continuous ultra-rapid annealing (CURA)

Abstract: Ultra-Rapid Annealing (URA) is an effective means of producing Fe-rich nanocrystalline soft magnetic materials with desirable soft magnetic properties. However, compared to existing annealing techniques, URA presents many unique processing challenges that have so far limited its scalability. In this study, a novel Continuous Ultra-Rapid Annealing (CURA) technique is introduced. This technique is based on a reel-to-reel process and is considered suitable for industrial-scale production. The effectiveness of CURA is evaluated by comparing the microstructural and magnetic properties of a heating-rate-sensitive nanocrystalline (Fe0.8Co0.2)86B14 alloy produced by URA and CURA. It is seen that both techniques produce comparable soft magnetic properties and that the continuous annealing process is stable after a short settling time. A proof-of-concept electric motor containing a CURA prepared nanocrystalline stator core is also demonstrated and compared to an equivalent motor with a Fe-Si steel stator core. It is shown that the CURA production process can be used to produce magnetically soft nanocrystalline materials with complex geometries and that they can deliver increased performance in existing commercial applications.

Abstract: About one hundred magnets of six different types shall be installed in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in the years 2026-2028 at CERN. The magnets design, construction and test are based on CERN collaborations with institutes and industrial partners in USA, Spain, Italy, Japan and China. Three types of correctors are based on Nb‒Ti technology and feature conductor peak fields in the 2 to 4 T range: for all of them the prototype phase has been successfully completed. The production is well advanced for the superferric correctors, and is starting for the canted cosine theta correctors and for the nested correctors. The separation and recombination Nb‒Ti dipoles D1 and D2, with a 4.5-6 T bore field range, are both in the prototype phase after the completion of the short model program. The most challenging magnet, the Nb3Sn quadrupole with conductor peak field above 11 T, is in the prototype phase at CERN and halfway through the production phase in the USA. In this paper we will give, for each type of magnet, an overview of the main achievements obtained so far and we will outline the technical points still needing validation from the prototype program.

37. Global aerosol simulations using NICAM.16 on a 14 km grid spacing for a climate study: improved and remaining issues relative to a lower-resolution model

Abstract: High-performance computing resources allow us to conduct numerical simulations with a horizontal grid spacing that is sufficiently high to resolve cloud systems on a global scale, and high-resolution models (HRMs) generally provide better simulation performance than low-resolution models (LRMs). In this study, we execute a next-generation model that is capable of simulating global aerosols using version 16 of the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM.16). The simulated aerosol distributions are obtained for 3 years with an HRM using a global 14 km grid spacing, an unprecedentedly high horizontal resolution and long integration period. For comparison, a NICAM with a 56 km grid spacing is also run as an LRM, although this horizontal resolution is still high among current global aerosol climate models. The comparison elucidated that the differences in the various variables of meteorological fields, including the wind speed, precipitation, clouds, radiation fluxes and total aerosols, are generally within 10 % of their annual averages, but most of the variables related to aerosols simulated by the HRM are slightly closer to the observations than are those simulated by the LRM. Upon investigating the aerosol components, the differences in the water-insoluble black carbon and sulfate concentrations between the HRM and LRM are large (up to 32 %), even in the annual averages. This finding is attributed to the differences in the aerosol wet deposition flux, which is determined by the conversion rate of cloud to precipitation, and the difference between the HRM and LRM is approximately 20 %. Additionally, the differences in the simulated aerosol concentrations at polluted sites during polluted months between the HRM and LRM are estimated with normalized mean biases of −19 % for black carbon (BC), −5 % for sulfate and −3 % for the aerosol optical thickness (AOT). These findings indicate that the impacts of higher horizontal grid spacings on model performance for secondary products such as sulfate, and complex products such as the AOT, are weaker than those for primary products, such as BC. On a global scale, the subgrid variabilities in the simulated AOT and cloud optical thickness (COT) in the 1∘×1∘ domain using 6-hourly data are estimated to be 28.5 % and 80.0 %, respectively, in the HRM, whereas the corresponding differences are 16.6 % and 22.9 % in the LRM. Over the Arctic, both the HRM and the LRM generally reproduce the observed aerosols, but the largest difference in the surface BC mass concentrations between the HRM and LRM reaches 30 % in spring (the HRM-simulated results are closer to the observations). The vertical distributions of the HRM- and LRM-simulated aerosols are generally close to the measurements, but the differences between the HRM and LRM results are large above a height of approximately 3 km, mainly due to differences in the wet deposition of aerosols. The global annual averages of the effective radiative forcings due to aerosol–radiation and aerosol–cloud interactions (ERFari and ERFaci) attributed to anthropogenic aerosols in the HRM are estimated to be -0.293±0.001 and -0.919±0.004 W m−2, respectively, whereas those in the LRM are -0.239±0.002 and -1.101±0.013 W m−2. The differences in the ERFari between the HRM and LRM are primarily caused by those in the aerosol burden, whereas the differences in the ERFaci are primarily caused by those in the cloud expression and performance, which are attributed to the grid spacing. The analysis of interannual variability revealed that the difference in reproducibility of both sulfate and carbonaceous aerosols at different horizontal resolution is greater than their interannual variability over 3 years, but those of dust and sea salt AOT and possibly clouds were the opposite. Because at least 10 times the computer resources are required for the HRM (14 km grid) compared to the LRM (56 km grid), these findings in this study help modelers decide whether the objectives can be achieved using such higher resolution or not under the limitation of available computational resources.

Abstract: Nowadays, digitizing roadside objects, for instance traffic signs, is a necessary step for generating High Definition Maps (HD Map) which remains as an open challenge. Rapid development of deep learning technology using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) has achieved great success in computer vision field in recent years. However, performance of most deep learning algorithms highly depends on the quality of training data. Collecting the desired training dataset is a difficult task, especially for roadside objects due to their imbalanced numbers along roadside. Although, training the neural network using synthetic data have been proposed. The distribution gap between synthetic and real data still exists and could aggravate the performance. We propose to transfer the style between synthetic and real data using Multi-Task Generative Adversarial Networks (SYN-MTGAN) before training the neural network which conducts the detection of roadside objects. Experiments focusing on traffic signs show that our proposed method can reach mAP of 0.77 and is able to improve detection performance for objects whose training samples are difficult to collect.

Abstract: The Kuroshio Current has been thought to be biologically unproductive because of its oligotrophic conditions and low plankton standing stocks. Even though vulnerable life stages of major foraging fishes risk being entrapped by frontal eddies and meanders and encountering low food availability, they have life cycle strategies that include growing and recruiting around the Kuroshio Current. Here we report that phytoplankton growth and consumption by microzooplankton are stimulated by turbulent nitrate flux amplified by the Kuroshio Current. Oceanographic observations demonstrate that the Kuroshio Current topographically enhances significant turbulent mixing and nitrate influx to the euphotic zone. Graduated nutrient enrichment experiments show that growth rates of phytoplankton and microheterotroph communities were stimulated within the range of the turbulent nitrate flux. Results of dilution experiments imply significant microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton. We propose that these rapid and systematic trophodynamics enhance biological productivity in the Kuroshio.

Abstract: Abstract The inclusive J/ψ production in Pb–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV, measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, is reported. The J/ψ meson is reconstructed via the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) down to zero transverse momentum. The suppression of the J/ψ yield in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to binary-scaled pp collisions is quantified by the nuclear modification factor (R AA). The R AA at s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV is presented and compared with previous measurements at s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 2.76 TeV as a function of the centrality of the collision, and of the J/ψ transverse momentum and rapidity. The inclusive J/ψ RAA shows a suppression increasing toward higher transverse momentum, with a steeper dependence for central collisions. The modification of the J/ψ average transverse momentum and average squared transverse momentum is also studied. Comparisons with the results of models based on a transport equation and on statistical hadronization are carried out.

Abstract: Abstract The multiplicity dependence of electron production from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum was measured in p-Pb collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The measurement was performed in the centre-of-mass rapidity interval −1.07 < y cms < 0.14 and transverse momentum interval 2 < p T < 16 GeV/c. The multiplicity dependence of the production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays was studied by comparing the p T spectra measured for different multiplicity classes with those measured in pp collisions (Q pPb) and in peripheral p-Pb collisions (Q cp). The Q pPb results obtained are consistent with unity within uncertainties in the measured p T interval and event classes. This indicates that heavy-flavour decay electron production is consistent with binary scaling and independent of the geometry of the collision system. Additionally, the results suggest that cold nuclear matter effects are negligible within uncertainties, in the production of heavy-flavour decay electrons at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions.

Abstract: Abstract The production of the $$\Lambda $$ Λ (1520) baryonic resonance has been measured at midrapidity in inelastic pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7\ \hbox {TeV}$$ s=7TeV and in p–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02\ \hbox {TeV}$$ sNN=5.02TeV for non-single diffractive events and in multiplicity classes. The resonance is reconstructed through its hadronic decay channel $$\Lambda $$ Λ (1520) $$\rightarrow \hbox {pK}^{-}$$ →pK- and the charge conjugate with the ALICE detector. The integrated yields and mean transverse momenta are calculated from the measured transverse momentum distributions in pp and p–Pb collisions. The mean transverse momenta follow mass ordering as previously observed for other hyperons in the same collision systems. A Blast-Wave function constrained by other light hadrons ($$\pi $$ π , K, $$\hbox {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0$$ KS0 , p, $$\Lambda $$ Λ ) describes the shape of the $$\Lambda $$ Λ (1520) transverse momentum distribution up to $$3.5\ \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 3.5GeV/c in p–Pb collisions. In the framework of this model, this observation suggests that the $$\Lambda $$ Λ (1520) resonance participates in the same collective radial flow as other light hadrons. The ratio of the yield of $$\Lambda (1520)$$ Λ(1520) to the yield of the ground state particle $$\Lambda $$ Λ remains constant as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, suggesting that there is no net effect of the hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions on the $$\Lambda $$ Λ (1520) yield.

44. A global end-member approach to derive aCDOM(440) from near-surface optical measurements

Abstract: This study establishes an optical inversion scheme for deriving the absorption coefficient of colored (or chromophoric, depending on the literature) dissolved organic material (CDOM) at the 440 nm wavelength, which can be applied to global water masses with near-equal efficacy. The approach uses a ratio of diffuse attenuation coefficient spectral end-members, i.e., a short- and long-wavelength pair. The global perspective is established by sampling “extremely” clear water plus a generalized extent in turbidity and optical properties that each span 3 decades of dynamic range. A unique data set was collected in oceanic, coastal, and inland waters (as shallow as 0.6 m) from the North Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, Hawaii, Japan, Puerto Rico, and the western coast of the United States. The data were partitioned using subjective categorizations to define a validation quality subset of conservative water masses (i.e., the inflow and outflow of properties constrain the range in the gradient of a constituent) plus 15 subcategories of more complex water masses that were not necessarily evolving conservatively. The dependence on optical complexity was confirmed with an objective methodology based on a cluster analysis technique. The latter defined five distinct classes with validation quality data present in all classes, but which also decreased in percent composition as a function of increasing class number and optical complexity. Four algorithms based on different validation quality end-members were validated with accuracies of 1.2 %–6.2 %, wherein pairs with the largest spectral span were most accurate. Although algorithm accuracy decreased with the inclusion of more subcategories containing nonconservative water masses, changes to the algorithm fit were small when a preponderance of subcategories were included. The high accuracy for all end-member algorithms was the result of data acquisition and data processing improvements, e.g., increased vertical sampling resolution to less than 1 mm (with pressure transducer precision of 0.03–0.08 mm) and a boundary constraint to mitigate wave-focusing effects, respectively. An independent evaluation with a historical database confirmed the consistency of the algorithmic approach and its application to quality assurance, e.g., to flag data outside expected ranges, identify suspect spectra, and objectively determine the in-water extrapolation interval by converging agreement for all applicable end-member algorithms. The legacy data exhibit degraded performance (as 44 % uncertainty) due to a lack of high-quality near-surface observations, especially for clear waters wherein wave-focusing effects are problematic. The novel optical approach allows the in situ estimation of an in-water constituent in keeping with the accuracy obtained in the laboratory.

Abstract: By performing ideal magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations with weak vertical magnetic fields in unstratified cylindrical shearing boxes with modified boundary treatment, we investigate MHD turbulence excited by magnetorotational instability. The cylindrical simulation exhibits extremely large temporal variation in the magnetic activity compared with the simulation in a normal Cartesian shearing box, although the time-averaged field strengths are comparable in the cylindrical and Cartesian setups. Detailed analysis of the terms describing magnetic energy evolution with “triangle diagrams” surprisingly reveals that in the cylindrical simulation the compression of toroidal magnetic field is unexpectedly as important as the winding due to differential rotation in amplifying magnetic fields and triggering intermittent magnetic bursts, which are not seen in the Cartesian simulation. The importance of the compressible amplification is also true for a cylindrical simulation with tiny curvature; the evolution of magnetic fields in the nearly Cartesian shearing box simulation is fundamentally different from that in the exact Cartesian counterpart. The radial gradient of epicyclic frequency , κ , which cannot be considered in the normal Cartesian shearing box model, is the cause of this fundamental difference. An additional consequence of the spatial variation of κ is continuous and ubiquitous formation of narrow high-density (low-density) and weak-field (strong-field) localized structures; seeds of these ring gap structures are created by the compressible effect and subsequently amplified and maintained under the marginally unstable condition regarding “viscous-type” instability.

46. Coronal Loops with Different Metallicities and Generalized RTV Scaling Laws

Abstract: Stellar metallicity is a critical factor to characterize the stellar coronae because it directly affects the radiative energy loss from the atmosphere. By extending theoretical relations for solar coronal loops introduced by Rosner et al., we analytically derive scaling relations for stellar coronal loops with various metallicities. In order to validate the derived relations, we also perform magnetohydrodynamic simulations for the heating of coronal loops with different metallicities by changing radiative-loss functions according to the adopted elemental abundances. The simulation results nicely explain the generalized analytical scaling relations and show a strong dependence of the thermodynamical and radiative properties of the loops on metallicity. Higher density and temperature are obtained in lower-metallicity coronae because of the inefficient radiative cooling, provided that the surface condition is unchanged. Thus, it is estimated that the X-ray radiation from metal-poor coronae is higher because of their denser coronal gas. The generalized scaling laws can also be used as a tool to study the condition of high-energy radiation around magnetically active stars and their impact on planetary environments.

47. Collisional Growth and Fragmentation of Dust Aggregates. II. Mass Distribution of Icy Fragments

Abstract: By performing N -body simulations, we investigated the fundamental processes of collisions between dust aggregates composed of submicron-sized icy dust monomers. We examined the mass distribution of fragments in the collisional outcomes in a wide range of the mass ratio and the collision velocity between colliding dust aggregates. We derived analytic expressions of the mass distribution of large remnants and small fragments by numerical fitting to the simulation results. Our analytic formulae for masses of the large remnants can reproduce the contribution of mass transfer from a large target to a small projectile, which occurs for a mass ratio of ≳3 and is shown in a previous study. We found that the power-law index of the cumulative mass distribution of the small fragments is independent of the mass ratio and only weakly dependent on the collision velocity. On the other hand, the mass fraction of fragments of individual dust monomers decreases with an increasing total mass of colliding aggregates for a fixed mass ratio. This tendency implies that multiple hierarchical disruptive collisions (i.e., collisions between fragments, and collisions between fragments of fragments) are required for producing a large number of individual dust monomers via collisional fragmentation. Our fragment model suggests that the total geometric cross section integrated over the fragments is estimated to be about the same order as the geometric cross section of the target.

Abstract: Abstract The measurement of the production of prompt D0, D+, D*+, and D S + $$ {\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{S}}^{+} $$ mesons in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 292 ± 11 μb −1, are reported. Differential production cross sections are measured at mid-rapidity (−0.96 < y cms < 0.04) as a function of transverse momentum (p T) in the intervals 0 < p T < 36 GeV/c for D0, 1 < p T < 36 GeV/c for D+ and D*+, and 2 < p T < 24 GeV/c for D+ mesons. For each species, the nuclear modification factor R pPb is calculated as a function of p T using a proton-proton (pp) ref- erence measured at the same collision energy. The results are compatible with unity in the whole p T range. The average of the non-strange D mesons R pPb is compared with theoretical model predictions that include initial-state effects and parton transport model predictions. The p T dependence of the D0, D+, and D*+ nuclear modification factors is also reported in the interval 1 < p T < 36 GeV/c as a function of the collision centrality, and the central-to-peripheral ratios are computed from the D-meson yields measured in different centrality classes. The results are further compared with charged-particle measurements and a similar trend is observed in all the centrality classes. The ratios of the p T-differential cross sections of D0, D+, D*+, and D S + $$ {\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{S}}^{+} $$ mesons are also reported. The D S + $$ {\mathrm{D}}_{\mathrm{S}}^{+} $$ and D+ yields are compared as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity for several p T intervals. No modification in the relative abundances of the four species is observed with respect to pp collisions within the statistical and systematic uncertainties.
