Käsbohrer, F., Kuss, J., Voigt, T.: Exkursionsführer zur Geologie des Unteren Buntsandsteins (Untertrias) zwischen Harz und Thüringer Wald. - Hercynia N. F. 54/1 (2021): 1 – 64. Dieser geologische Exkursionsführer wendet sich vorwiegend an Geowissenschaftler/innen, die fachlichen Anforderungen sind im Wesentlichen auf diese Zielgruppe zugeschnitten. Dennoch ist der Exkursionsführer auch interessierten Laien zu empfehlen. Der Exkursionsführer dokumentiert die sedimentäre Abfolge des Unteren Buntsandsteins (Calvörde- und Bernburg-Formation) innerhalb der lakustrinen Beckenfazies im nördlichen und östlichen Harzvorland. Zusätzlich wird die lakustrine, stärker siliziklastisch geprägte Randfazies im Thüringer Becken dokumentiert. Die Aufschlüsse des kontinentalen Unteren Buntsandsteins offenbaren eine vielfältige, zyklische Sedimentation, die sowohl siliziklastisch als auch karbonatisch geprägt ist. Kennzeichnend fürSedimente eines flachen Sees sind flasergeschichtete Ton- und Siltsteine mit zwischengeschalteten Oolithen und Stromatolithen, während an der Küstenlinie des Sees oolithische Sandsteine innerhalb sandiger Uferbarren zur Ablagerung kommen. Diese Uferlinie ist in den Sedimenten des Unteren Buntsandsteins äußerst selten erhalten, was auf stark schwankende Seespiegel aufgrund klimatischer Variationen zurückgeführt wird. Die randliche Fazies des Unteren Buntsandsteins ist geprägt von fluviatilen Sanden perennierender, ephemerer Zopfströme sowie äolischer Sedimentation in Form von Dünen und Sandebenen. Die mikrobiell geprägte Karbonatfazies mit Oolithen und Stromatolithen ist im Unteren Buntsandstein des Harzvorlands besonders spektakulär aufgeschlossen. Wichtige Aufschlüsse umfassen den Heeseberg bei Jerxheim, Harly bei Vienenburg sowie Beesenlaublingen. Diese in klastisch dominierten Abfolgen zwischengeschalteten Kalksteine sind Gegenstand einer andauernden wissenschaftlichen Diskussion, bezüglich ihrer marinen bzw. lakustrinen Entstehung. Die Frage nach dem Ablagerungsmilieu vermag der vorliegende Exkursionsführer nicht eindeutig zu klären. Allerdings favorisieren die Autoren ein Ablagerungsmodell, das auf Grund zahlreicher sedimentologischer Befunde, am besten mit randlichen Seenbereichen verglichen werden kann. In Zukunft besteht Bedarf an weiterer multidisziplinärer Forschung im Unteren Buntsandstein des gesamten Mitteleuropäischen Beckens, um eine präzise Rekonstruktion dieses komplexen Ablagerungssystems zu erreichen. Obwohl die hier beschriebenen Einzelprofile nur Teilabschnitte des Unteren Buntsandsteins darstellen, sind sie gut in das regionale stratigraphische Gerüst einzuordnen. Zudem ist mit den Profilen Nelben und Caaschwitz der Übergang zwischen Perm und Trias aufgeschlossen. Überaus vielfältige Lithologien, Sedimentstrukturen und damit verknüpfte Ablagerungssysteme machen die Aufschlüsse des Unteren Buntsandsteins zu exzellenten Exkursionszielen für Lehre und Forschung. Oolithe und Stromatolithe – in karbonatischen Abfolgen weltweit von großer Bedeutung – sind im Unteren Buntsandstein Mitteldeutschlands so anschaulich ausgebildet wie sonst nirgends in Deutschland., Käsbohrer, F., Kuss, J., Voigt, T.: Field guide to the geology of the Lower Buntsandstein (Lower Triassic) in Central Germany. - Hercynia N. F. 54/1 (2021): 1 – 64. We present a geological field guidebook where important and actual outcrops of the Lower Buntsandstein (Lower Triassic) in Central Germany are documented. It is mainly written for geoscientists interested in sedimentary geology. The field guide documents the sedimentary succession of the Lower Buntsandstein Subgroup (Calvörde and Bernburg formations) within the lacustrine basin facies in the vicinity of the Harz Mountains, where rhythmically intercalated oolites and stromatolites represent unique features within a normally sand- and clay-dominated succession. In addition, a marginal lacustrine facies in the eastern parts of the Thuringian Basin is documented. Important outcrops are measured in detail, including a documentation of the most striking lithologic characteristics; the latter are also demonstrated at (ancient) buildings where oolites and/or stromatolites of the Lower Buntsandstein were used as building stones. The field guide summarizes the sedimentological features of the Lower Buntsandstein in its lacustrine facies. The latter are described with detailed lithological sections, photos, and location maps.

The layer-cake strata of the epeiric Anisian-Ladinian Muschelkalk are devoid of large-scale architectural elements, e. g. steep clinoforms of a progradional platform slope. This resulted in a simplified approach in facies analysis, in which results of classical microfacies analysis (microscale) are used directly to conclude on depositional models (macroscale). In coastal settings, depositional cycles (mesoscale) are often defined in an intermediate step to visualize progradational or retrogradational patterns of shorelines or shoreline-detached shoals. Apart from such large-scale stratal pattern architectures, a conceptual approach to integrate the depositional architecture of individual beds and sets of strata is missing. The intra-basin shoal system of the Anisian Rüdersdorf Formation shows a complex pattern of fore- to backshoal facies (Schaumkalk) interfingering with mixed clastic-carbonate facies of an epeiric Inland Sea (Wellenkalk, Jena Formation). Thus, it represents an ideal case study on depositional architectures of shallow marine carbonates. Our data are based on a detailed bed-by-bed outcrop study in the Rüdersdorf open pit mine to the East of Berlin. In addition, we included data from exploration wells situated in and near the open pit mine to reveal lateral facies changes. Consecutive observations from micro- to macroscale led to a classification of lithofacies types, architectural elements and lithofacies associations. The vertical succession exposed in the outcrop shows gradual transitions from bioturbated marly mudstone lithofacies (Wellenkalk) to thick cross-bedded oolitic/oomoldic grainstone lithofacies (Schaumkalk). Local 2-D correlation schemes implementing exploration wells reveal vertical and lateral facies shifts associated to the repeated formation, migration and drowning of an intra-basin shoal complex. The vertical and lateral facies shifts are associated to subaqueous sediment gravity flows, which redistributed carbonate grains from the shoal complex to foreshoal and backshoal environments. The bed-by-bed outcrop analysis revealed distinct architectures of sheet-like gravity flow deposits with decreasing internal complexity in down-current direction. The architectural elements of the medium- to low-energy transition zone are in noticeable contrast to those of the high-energy shoal fringe and top. The architectural elements observed so far enable an improved reconstruction of the physical processes leading to deposition of the Rüdersdorf Formation. If properly defined, the implementation of architectural-element analysis (mesoscale) in carbonate sedimentology may become the consistent intermediate step from microfacies analysis (microscale) to depositional models (macroscale).
