WORLD War I ,WAR ,RECONNAISSANCE operations ,NEWS agencies ,PROPAGANDA ,HYSTERIA - Abstract
At the beginning of the First World War, Robert Saudek was part of a relatively small group of intellectuals who, although they kept their distance from the war hysteria, got involved in war propaganda by the force of circumstances, simply because the only alternative was the much worse option of serving at the front. It was undoubtedly a schizophrenic experience, but there was no escaping it. Robert Saudek’s response was to move into the more or less technical and rather neutral field of gathering intelligence. He was not one of the blatant purveyors of Austro-Hungarian or German war propaganda; instead, he excelled in acquiring, collecting, analysing, and distributing news and information. The ossified Austro-Hungarian propaganda machine failed to appreciate his contribution, and Robert Saudek continually struggled with it. With his ambitious nature, he did not hesitate to pretend to own the Dutch news agency Hollandsch Niewsbureau in order to strengthen his position vis-à-vis the Viennese authorities. JOURNALISM research , *PRESS , *MASS media research , *SOCIALIST press , *PROFESSIONALIZATION , *HISTORY - Abstract
Taking developments since 1989 as a starting point, this contribution deals with the history of the Czech press on one hand, starting with the beginning of the eighteenth century, and with the treatment of journalism and the media as academic field on the other. The authors demonstrate that the Czech press scene was a mirror and, at the same time, an engine for the cultural development and for the politicization of the Czech nation. They follow developments from the First Czechoslovak Republic, where the media experienced a heyday, through repression during the German occupation, up to the socialist era. They elaborate on individual phases of socialist press politics and describe the exploitation of the media for political goals, but also their modernization. The scientific treatment of media developments is also traced back to the start, as is the professionalization of the journalistic trade. According to the authors, this rich tradition has been far too rarely taken into consideration since 1989: too frequently the press, but also the newly established media sciences followed models from the West. The main goal of the authors is thus to draw attention to the inspiration that can be gleaned from the own past, in media science and other disciplines dealing with the media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diploma thesis analyses the topic of building a foreign intelligence network and its activities during the First World War (1914-1918) on the example of the Československá samostatnost and La Nation Tchéque magazines. The introduction maps the steps of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk after his emigration in 1914. Masaryk was the main personality of the whole foreign affair, but the thesis also deals with other representatives of the foreign resistance, such as Lev Sychrava, who was responsible for the issuing of Československá samostatnost, or Ernest Denis, who together with Edvard Beneš edited La Nation Tchéque. The work is based primarily on archival sources with special regard to the collection of the Editorial Offices of the Československá samostatnost and La Nation Tchéque, which is stored in the Military Historical Archive. This collection contains correspondence from both editorial offices, draft articles for both papers and other auxiliary materials from which the content of both papers was formed. The content of the entire collection is gradually revealed in the thesis. At the end of the thesis there is a case study on the topic of propaganda of the Czechoslovak affair in the content of Československá samostatnost on the example of a specific event, which is the Manifesto of Czech Writers from...

The diploma thesis entitled The Atheization Policy of the Czechoslovak Republic from the End of 1940s to the Mid-1950s Illustrated on the Example of the Historical Regional Media introduces to the reader how Marxist-Leninist ideologies approached the topic of atheism and the process of atheization, and how they presented this worldview to the popular masses. The reader will also learn about the region of Teschen Silesia (where the research is based), its media and the media system established in Czechoslovakia at the time under discussion. The work also reflects on the post-war rise of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and its coup in 1948. The practical part of the thesis then reflects how the editors of the selected media (the widely available regional daily Nová svoboda, the newspaper of the Polish minority Głos Ludu and the company magazine Třinecký hutník) published topics that were supposed to lead their readers to secularization from 1948 to 1952. However, it is clear from the conclusions of the individual editions that the promotion of scientific atheism had minimal space, and the editors focused primarily on international, domestic social and political events. As time went on, however, even these contributions dwindled. Judicial monster trials of inconvenient clerics were also...

The diploma thesis Development of topics in selected Czech women's and lifestyle magazines in the years 1918-2018 brings a unique research of a century-old development of selected contents from magazines for women. The introductory chapter states the theoretical framework of media research and its effects and explains the methodology of the research. As its basic platform, it uses the history of the republic, which at first divides into several separate stages bounded by the so-called "eight years" (1918, 1938, 1948, 1968, 1988-89, 2008 and 2018), in which it introduces selected key events of these years. The individual historical parts are followed by a presentation of the influences of these historical milestones on the work and function of the media and the development of emancipation and everyday life of women. It concludes each historical chapter with an analysis of the structure of topics published in the magazines Ženský svět (Women's World) from 1908-1928, Eva (Catholic review) from 1918, Eva (magazine of modern or educated women) from 1928 and 1938, Hvězda československých paní a dívek (Star of Czechoslovak ladies and girls) from 1928 and 1938, Vlasta from 1948 to 2018 and Žena a život (Woman and Life) from 1998-2018. This diploma thesis maps the media interest in former president Václav Havel by the Czech News Agency during the 10 years following his death in December 2011. It focuses not only on the number of reports, but also compares the individual years with regard to what events influence the number of reports that mention the former president. Using full-text searches in the Czech News Agency's Infobank, metadata codes used by the agency to classify news, and quantitative content analysis with the addition of evaluative elements, the paper tracks which topics most frequently appear in the agency's text service in connection with Václav Havel, whether the president is the main actor in the news, or what the tonality of news texts is in relation to him. The theoretical part defines the basic concepts and theories related to the social and media construction of reality, media image and media logic. The contextual part introduces in rough outlines the personality of Václav Havel. The methodological part deals with the specifics of the news text service offered by Czech News Agency and presents the research methods used. The research part presents the results of the analysis. These show that the number of news items mentioning Havel does not tend to decrease over time, but responds to events in society. The...

This diploma thesis explores the evolution of the way Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press after the 1st of January 1993. For this purpose, it aims to answer the question: 25 years after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, what has changed in the way the Czech print media perceive Slovaks and Slovakia? The way Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press is always reconstructed using the methods of quantitative and qualitative content analysis, namely in selected three- month periods in the years 1993, 1998, 2004, and 2008. These periods are related to events which for Slovaks and Slovakia, following the dissolution of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic, are generally perceived as significant. It is essential to understand we are interested in Slovaks and Slovakia as seen by the Czech press. Based on the performed content analyses and their results respectively, the diploma thesis characterizes the ways Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press in the given periods. These findings are then compared to capture the overall evolution of media portrayal of Slovaks and Slovakia in the Czech press in the course of time. The empirical evidence serves as a base for formulating conclusions and validating the research hypothesis.

Specifically, it examines the use of user-generated content in the regional newsroom of Czech Television in Ústí nad Labem, in Děčínský deník and Mladá fronta Dnes Severní Čechy. The theoretical part brings the field context of changes in journalism with the advent of digital media and their impact on traditional journalism. Furthermore, the phenomenon of user-generated content, its definitions and specific examples from foreign and domestic television and print media are introduced. Using semi-structured interviews and quantitative content analysis, it describes and offers a detailed description of the work of selected regional media with user-generated content. The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe the state, method of processing and content of UGC in three selected regional media in the Ústí...

The doctoral thesis Gastronomy as a part of life style in the Czech national print media in the period between the wars in Czechoslovak Republic presents the results of eight years long research of food journalism in the Czech press between 1918 and 1938. This period called First Republic is often seen, due the positive sentiment, as a modern, democratic and prosperous state. The reality is a different. This text presents just a little part of picture of life style during First Republic which is gastronomy. That mirrors the economic and social level of the society. This text reflects critically the historical facts. The assumption, that print media pay regularly attention to the gastronomy as an integral part of life is important idea of this research. The content analysis proofs, that food journalism had its own section in the analyzed daily print, although media didn't used this kind of terminology. Five national newspapers (Lidové noviny, Národní politika, České slovo, Právo lidu and Venkov) were issued in the period 1918-1938 and newspapers Rudé právo established 1920 are included in the analysis. The selection of these (media) reflects the whole social-political spectrum of the audience. It could be assumed, that the selected newspapers represent the whole plurality of opinions. The main theme of this thesis is to look into the conflict known as the "Soviet war in Afghanistan", respectively its important parts by the looks of two, radically different contemporary/period periodicals. These periodicals are both well known, New York Times and Rudé právo. The main goal of this thesis is to compare the view of important events in both of these periodicals and then compare these portrayed views with actual historic context. Thesis is divided into three parts. First part mainly focuses on the historic context of portrayed conflict, its development and a detailed look into both involved parties. The second part focuses on the actual analysis of the viewed content or rather qualitative research, and then takes a closer look at chosen events of this conflict in both periodicals. The third part zeroes in on to final analysis of the data, obtained by qualitative research in the previous part. Finally, the third part aims to evaluate the way these periodicals portrayed this conflict and how much did these views aligned with the historic context.

This master's thesis focuses on how the Czech Television covered the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia in its main evening news program. It was an important theme of the whole year 2018, it wasn't the only anniversary we commemorated in that year, though. In 2018, eighty years have passed since the signing of the Munich Agreement in 1938 and seventy years since the 1948 Czechoslovak coup d'état. It's also been fifty years since the Prague Spring and the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Last but not least, we celebrated twenty-five years since the founding of the Czech Republic in 1993. All these events are significant milestones in Czech and world history of the twentieth century. Therefore, the thesis analyzes to what extent Czech Television dealt with these events. The aim of the thesis is to get an insight into the coverage of this topic throughout the year 2018 and to find out how much space was provided for each anniversary and what the nature of the posts was.

The practical part of the thesis aims to reflect on the Eichmann process in the chosen Czechoslovak and foreign press, which will be achieved through content and descriptive analysis. Relevant articles about Eichmann or his trial in the period April-August 1961, December 1961 and May 1962 will be examined. Czechoslovak dailies (Rudé právo, Práca) and foreign press (American dailies The New York Times and Daily News, British Guardian and the Daily Mirror, and the Canadian The Gazette) will be analysed. anglicky The first part of the bachelor thesis aims to give its readers an idea how the Federální úřad pro tisk a informace, which supervised the Czechoslovak media infrastructure between 1981 and 1990, worked. Based on the synthesis of the archive materials from the National Archives and National Library of the Czech Republic, the thesis observes and explains the roles of each of its divisions. It situates Federální úřad pro tisk a informace in the historical context of previous censorship organizations and clarifies its position as the implementer of indirect censorship. The second part of the bachelor thesis focuses on the publishing of the periodical Informační týdeník. Using archive materials (primarily the minutes from the editorial boards) and the testimony of the editor Darina Sedláčková, the thesis puts together a picture of the periodical's purpose and presents essential information for understanding of its work. It tracks its contributions to the particular mass media editorial offices, observes the evolution of Informační týdeník over time and explains potential changes in its content. An interview with one of the editors uncovers the inner structure of Informační týdeník and daily routine of the editor in detail. Academic paper "An Image of the Years 1948, 1953 and 1968 on Pages of the Karlovy Vary Press" analyses specific articles from newspapers that were published in Karlovy Vary. In 1948 it was newpaper called Budovatel - List Čs. sociální demokracie and Jednota - List pracujících hraničářů. In 1953 we follow newspaper Stráž míru and Karlovarský kraj. We selected several articles which we analysed and described in detail from the perspective of content and thematic focus. We are looking for answers to the questions we have established in the theoretical part. In 1948, we look for references in the texts, for example, to the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia; new settlement within the areas Germans left, or we look for references to the communist coup in February 1948. In articles from 1953, we follow the information about the deaths of J. V. Stalin and Klement Gottwald. We also look for references about monetary reform in the texts. The work aims to approach the historical environment of the Karlovy Vary region from the perspective of the above-mentioned newspapers.

The focus of this master's thesis is on the role of specific media in the diffusion of Japanese culture. Even though Japan is both geographically distant and culturally distinct from the rest of the world, it has become popular among fans globally. One of the main factors contributing to this fascination is a so-called media mix including Japan-specific media ranging from manga and anime to videogames. The aim of this master's thesis is to find out, based on a quantitative research conducted in both Czech and English-speaking environments, how various media outlets in Japan contribute to its popularity world-wide, identify the most important medium and scrutinize it through a descriptive analysis based on the theories of globalisation and cultural hybridisation to see what makes this medium so distinct. The author discovered that the most significant medium contributing to the diffusion of Japanese culture is anime. One of the main reasons behind its success is a commercial strategy of Japanese producers who intentionally remove cultural boundaries out of anime to make it globally acceptable. Another contributing factor connected to that, is the hybrid look of anime characters that do not have the physical features of Japanese people, which is why audiences tend to link the characters to their own...

The Czech Republic is often said to be a Eurosceptic country. These opinions mainly come from the results of public opinion polls, as, for example, the election results do not show higher success of Eurosceptic parties and, after all, the referendum on the Czech Republic's accession to the EU has a positive result. Skeptical opinions may rather show in a lack of interest in European issues, poor awareness, or low participation in the European elections, where the Czech Republic has had one of the lowest participations for a long time. It is the primary goal of this diploma thesis to find out what role the print media play in these moods and whether some of them may be labeled as Eurosceptic. Another goal is to verify the presented theory of Euroscepticism and the relevance of its defined actors, and also to find new, previously undefined Eurosceptics.

In my thesis I analyse how the United States was depicted in Rudé právo during selected stretches of the Vietnam War. I focus on 1966 (the US already at war), 1968 (the Tet offensive) and 1969 (Nixon as president, the death of Ho Chi Minh) and I explore what image a Czechoslovak reader might have made of the US based on those periods. Next, I observe the differences between the objective portrayal of these historical events and their media coverage in Rudé právo. In my work I assume that Rudé právo did not inform about the Vietnam War objectively, but was instead subject to Communist propaganda. At the same time, I am also interested in the means by which Rudé právo obtained a subjective description of these events.

This diploma thesis discusses Instagram as a means for spreading trends in gastronomy with a focus on gastronomy and related trends in the field specifically from the Czech Republic. The author tries to map the influences that the online environment can have on their formation, especially the social network Instagram. After a thorough acquaintance with the environment of social networks, the social network Instagram, its influence on the spread of experiences, trends and the media environment in general, is described in more detail. The author seeks to clarify whether what is happening on this network can guide the direction of what is popular in the gastronomic environment, understand the role that well-watched creators from Instragram play in society and what it means for ordinary users to share food experiences. "Influential" users from the gastronomic sphere on Czech Instagram and their further connection with the media environment are presented. In the research, the author determines, via the form of a structured questionnaire (which was attended by 1143 respondents from the environment of social networks), what role Instragram plays in spreading gastronomic trends in the Czech Republic. The data obtained is supplemented with opinions based on interviews with representatives from the Czech...

This Diploma thesis deals with the media coverage of the Korean war in the Rudé právo daily, in that period the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Its main goal is to ascertain the rate of influence of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, of rigorous censorship of the regime and Soviet Union dictatorship upon informing about events of the Korean war, which was the first conflict ever where the United Nations army, consisting of several states, was fighting together. For this purpose, by studying secondary resources I am first of all describing conditions leading to the war and determining the most important events of the war, including for instance landing of the United Nations forces in Incheon, China involvement or distinct phases of armistice negotiations. The crucial part of this thesis is the portrayal of these events in the newspaper, including monitoring of tens of issues between late May 1950 and early October 1950. Regarding the facts ascertained by that time I am switching to five days cycles of newspaper monitoring, which has by the end proven to be absolutely sufficient for creating a comprehensive image.

This thesis deals with the manifestations of the Communist propaganda in the period 1948- 1956 in the Czechoslovakian women's press, represented here by the Vlasta weekly magazine. It summarily presents the political and media situation in Czechoslovakia after World War Two and describes the two most significant organisations of the Czechoslovak women's movement at the time, together with their magazines, Československá žena and Rada žen, which preceded Vlasta. It presents the establishment of the Vlasta weekly magazine and introduces the two editors in chief, who managed the magazine in the period in question. Due to its extraordinary importance, it devotes a separate chapter to the most significant figure of the then Czechoslovak women's movement and in many aspects an exceptional personality Dr. Milada Horáková who initiated the establishment of Vlasta and published her own works in the magazine up to February 1948. After a theoretical introduction of Communist propaganda, the thesis presents its manifestations through specific examples from the content of Vlasta. The period in question is divided into three periods, the landmark year of 1948, when following the relatively independent beginning of Communist propaganda after the February Coup, this doctrine took complete control of the initially...

This bachelor's thesis addresses the transformation of the content of town hall periodicals after the municipal elections in 2018. The thesis is theoretically based on the amendment to the Press Act, which obliges publishers of local government periodicals to provide objective and balanced information. When creating the methodology, I was inspired by a study of the civic association Oživení from 2014, whose authors analysed 100 periodicals published by local governments in order to assess the balance of information provided and the degree of self- promotion of the management of these local governments. Using the method of quantitative content analysis, I analysed five Czech town hall periodicals. The aim of the work is to reflect a possible change in the content of town hall periodicals after a change in the composition of the political management of self-governing units, and thus to find out how much this composition affects the final product.

Internal communication is essential for every company. However it is not always perceived as such. Internal communication is a conveyor of information and company's values. It is based on corporate culture and it also influences in. It affects atmosphere and performance of the company, engagement and overall happiness of employees. It is also related to the rate of their fluctuation. Diversity, which is the key to the diversity of approaches and perspectives, is also comparatively important to the functioning of the company. Diversity brings more effective problem solving or team functioning. In this respect, companies should strive for gender equality in their working environment and take supportive initiatives to help women overcome barriers in the labor market. The Czech Republic is one of the worst-ranked countries in the European Union in terms of gender equality in the labor market. This diploma thesis deals with the interconnection of internal communication and topics related to promoting women in work and personal life.
