Abstract

We report on a comprehensive study of the magnetic coupling between soft magnetic Fe layers and hard magnetic Dysprosium (Dy) layers at low temperatures (4.2 - 120K). For our experiments we prepared thin films of Fe and Dy and multilayers of Fe/Dy by ultra-high vacuum sputtering. The magnetic properties of each material were determined with a superconducting quantum interference device. Furthermore, we performed magnetoresistance measurements with similarly grown, microstructured devices, where the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect was used to identify the magnetization state of the samples. By analyzing and comparing the corresponding data of Fe and Dy, we show that the presence of a Dy layer on top of the Fe layer significantly influences its magnetic properties and makes it magnetically harder. We perform a systematic evaluation of this effect and its dependence on temperature and on the thickness of the soft magnetic layer. All experimental results can consistently be explained with exchange coupling at the interface between the Fe and the Dy layer. Our experiments also yield a negative sign of the AMR effect of thin Dy films, and an increase of the Dy films' Curie temperature, which is due to growth conditions.

Abstract

Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrathin multilayers of magnetic and heavy metals has recently attracted much interest. This method not only provides fundamental insights into photoinduced spin transport and spin-orbit interaction at highest frequencies but has also paved the way to applications such as efficient and ultrabroadband emitters of terahertz electromagnetic radiation. So far, predominantly standard ferromagnetic materials have been exploited. Here, by introducing a suitable figure of merit, we systematically compare the strength of terahertz emission from X/Pt bilayers with X being a complex ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic metal, that is, dysprosium cobalt (DyCo$_5$), gadolinium iron (Gd$_{24}$Fe$_{76}$), Magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) and iron rhodium (FeRh). We find that the performance in terms of spin-current generation not only depends on the spin polarization of the magnet's conduction electrons but also on the specific interface conditions, thereby suggesting terahertz emission spectroscopy to be a highly surface-sensitive technique. In general, our results are relevant for all applications that rely on the optical generation of ultrafast spin currents in spintronic metallic multilayers.

Abstract

We determine experimentally the spin structure of half-metallic Co2FeAl0.4Si0.6 Heusler alloy elements using magnetic microscopy. Following magnetic saturation, the dominant magnetic states consist of quasi-uniform configurations, where a strong influence from the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is visible. Heating experiments show the stability of the spin configuration of domain walls in confined geometries up to 800 K. The switching temperature for the transition from transverse to vortex walls in ring elements is found to increase with ring width, an effect attributed to structural changes and consequent changes in magnetic anisotropy, which start to occur in the narrower elements at lower temperatures., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We have measured production yields and longitudinal momentum distributions of projectile-like fragments in the reaction 129Xe + 27Al at an energy of Elab=790 AMeV. Production cross sections higher than expected from systematics were observed for nuclei in the neutron-deficient tails of the isotopic distributions. A comparison with previously measured data from the fragmentation of 136Xe ions shows that the production yields strongly depend on the neutron excess of the projectile with respect to the line of beta-stability. The momentum distributions exhibit a dependence on the fragment neutron-to-proton ratio in isobaric chains, which was not expected from systematics so far. This can be interpreted by a higher excitation of the projectile during the formation of neutron-deficient fragments., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, 1 table
