The beta spectrum of the main transition of the beta-decay of 171Tm was measured using a double focalizing spectrometer. The instrument was lately improved in order to reduce its low energy threshold to 34 keV. We used the spectrometer to measure the beta spectrum end-point energy of the main transition of 171Tm decay using the Kurie plot formalism. We report a new value of 97.60(38) keV, which is in agreement with previous measurements. In addition, the spectrum shape was compared with the xi-approximation calculation where the shape factor is equal to 1 and good agreement was found between the theory and the measurement at the 1% level.

The nucleus of the radioisotope thorium-229 (${}^{229}$Th) features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. For this reason, it is a leading candidate for use in next-generation optical clocks. This nuclear clock will be a unique tool, amongst others, for tests of fundamental physics. While first indirect experimental evidence for the existence of such an extraordinary nuclear state is significantly older, the proof of existence has been delivered only recently by observing the isomer's electron conversion decay and its hyperfine structure in a laser spectroscopy study, revealing information on the isomer's excitation energy, nuclear spin and electromagnetic moments. Further studies reported the electron conversion lifetime and refined the isomer's energy. In spite of recent progress, the isomer's radiative decay, a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, remained unobserved. In this Letter, we report the detection of the radiative decay of this low-energy isomer in thorium-229 (${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th). By performing vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy of ${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th incorporated into large-bandgap CaF${}_2$ and MgF${}_2$ crystals at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, the photon vacuum wavelength of the isomer's decay is measured as 148.71(42) nm, corresponding to an excitation energy of 8.338(24) eV. This value is in agreement with recent measurements, and decreases the uncertainty by a factor of seven. The half-life of ${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th embedded in MgF${}_2$ is determined to be 670(102) s. The observation of the radiative decay in a large-bandgap crystal has important consequences for the design of a future nuclear clock and the improved uncertainty of the energy eases the search for direct laser excitation of the atomic nucleus.

The conditions of tests and calibrations described in the article E.E Kading et al. [Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 023279 (2020)] show striking flaws. The interpretation and extraction of quantitative results from this experiment are considered unreliable. One of the most important properties influencing the chemical behavior of an element is the energy released with the addition of an extra electron to the neutral atom, referred to as the electron affinity (EA). Among the remaining elements with unknown EA is astatine, the purely radioactive element 85. Astatine is the heaviest naturally occurring halogen and its isotope $^{211}$At is remarkably well suited for targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer. With the At$^-$ anion being involved in many aspects of current astatine labelling protocols, the knowledge of the electron affinity of this element is of prime importance. In addition, the EA can be used to deduce other concepts such as the electronegativity, thereby further improving the understanding of astatine's chemistry. Here, we report the first measurement of the EA for astatine to be 2.41578(7)eV. This result is compared to state-of-the-art relativistic quantum mechanical calculations, which require incorporation of the electron-electron correlation effects on the highest possible level. The developed technique of laser-photodetachment spectroscopy of radioisotopes opens the path for future EA measurements of other radioelements such as polonium, and eventually super-heavy elements, which are produced at a one-atom-at-a-time rate.

The specific heat of dilute alloys of holmium in gold and in silver plays a major role in the optimization of low temperature microcalorimeters with enclosed $^{163}\textrm{Ho}$, such as the ones developed for the neutrino mass experiment ECHo. We investigate alloys with atomic concentrations of $x_\textrm{Ho}=0.01\,\% - 4\,\%$ at temperatures between $10\,\textrm{mK}$ and $800\,\textrm{mK}$. Due to the large total angular momentum $J=8$ and nuclear spin $I=7/2$ of $\textrm{Ho}^{3+}$ ions, the specific heat of $\underline{\textrm{Au}}\textrm{:Ho}$ and $\underline{\textrm{Ag}}\textrm{:Ho}$ depends on the detailed interplay of various interactions, including contributions from the localized 4f electrons and nuclear contributions via hyperfine splitting. This makes it difficult to accurately determine the specific heat of these materials numerically. Instead, we measure their specific heat by using three experimental set-ups optimized for different concentration and temperature ranges. The results from measurements on six holmium alloys demonstrate that the specific heat of these materials is dominated by a large Schottky anomaly with its maximum at $T\approx 250\,\textrm{mK}$, which we attribute to hyperfine splitting and crystal field interactions. RKKY and dipole-dipole interactions between the holmium atoms cause additional, concentration-dependent effects. With regard to ECHo, we conclude that for typical operating temperatures of $T\leq 20\,\textrm{mK}$, silver holmium alloys with $x_\textrm{Ho}\gtrsim 1\,\%$ are suited best., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. A new mode of nuclear fission has been proposed by the FOBOS collaboration, called Collinear Cluster Tri-partition (CCT), suggesting that three heavy fission fragments can be emitted perfectly collinearly in low-energy fission. It is surprising that CCT escaped observation for so long given the relatively high reported yield, of roughly 0.5% relative to binary fission. These claims call for an independent verification with a different experimental technique. Verification experiments based on direct observation of CCT fragments with fission fragment spectrometers require guidance with respect to the allowed kinetic energy range, which we present in this paper. We discuss corresponding model calculations which, if CCT is found in such verification experiments, could indicate how the breakups proceed. We also study the intrinsic stability of collinearity. Three different decay models are used, which span together the timescales of three-body fission. These models are used to calculate the possible kinetic energy ranges of CCT fragments in 235U(n,f) and 252Cf(sf). We use semi-classical trajectory calculations with a Monte-Carlo method to study the intrinsic stability of collinearity. CCT has a high net Q-value, but in a sequential decay, the intermediate steps are energetically and geometrically unfavorable or even forbidden. Moreover, perfect collinearity is extremely unstable, and broken by the slightest perturbation. According to our results, the central fragment would be very difficult to detect due to its low kinetic energy, raising the question of why previous experiments could not detect a missing-mass signature corresponding to CCT. We find that a realization of CCT would require an unphysical fine-tuning of the initial conditions.
