1. Large-cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Endometrium in Myomatous Uterus

Abstract

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium is an insufficiently researched aggressive tumor with a short survival regard­less of the treatment type.We present here the 38th consecutive case of literature reported cases of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium (posi­tive for synaptophysin, CD56, chromogranin A, p53, and Vimentin) found in the myomatous uterus of a 76-year-old woman.We also describe in the study the morphological algorithm for differentiation of malignant blastomas with small (under 10 %) neuro-endocrinal component.Accumulated clinical and morphological evidence raises the question whether the large-cell and the small-cell neuroendocrine carcino­mas are just different variations according to their histology and topical occurrence (uterine body/cervix) or they are just independent forms with their respective clinical signs, morphology, treatment, and prognosis.

Abstract

Introduction. The widely used antiarrhythmic amiodarone (AD) has been linked to many health problems, including pulmonary toxicity. The objective of the study. In the present study we assessed the protective effect of 21-aminosteroid U-74389 G due to its antioxidative and membrane-stabilizing potency on amiodarone-induced pneumotoxicity in rats. Material and methods. The study was carried out on 72 male Wistar rats, divided into four groups: (1) – control; (2) – treated with AD intratracheally; (3) – treated with AD and U-74389G; (4) – treated with U-74389G alone. AD was instilled twice on days 0 and 2 (6.25 mg/kg with a concentration 3.125 mg/mL). U-74389G was injected intraperitoneally on days 0, 1 and 2 in a dose of 5 mg/kg. The activity of super-oxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GP), malondialdehyde (MDA) content and hydroxyproline content were performed on days 3, 7, 14 and 28 in lung homogenate. Hydroperoxide concentrations were measured in the plasma. Results. AD administration affected antioxidant defense system in the lungs, promoted lipid peroxidation, and caused pulmonary fibrosis. Conclusions. The 21-aminosteroid U-74389G significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation and mitigated fibrous changes in rat lungs provoked by AD.

Abstract

Introduction Pioneers have shown that it is possible to reconstruct a full breast using just autologous fat harvested by liposuction or autologous fat transfer (AFT). This study describes the first multicentre randomised study protocol to thoroughly investigate the effectiveness of AFT to reconstruct full breasts following mastectomy procedures (primarily and delayed).Methods and analysis This study is designed as a multicentre, randomised controlled clinical superiority trial with a 1:1 allocation ratio. A total of 196 patients (98 patients per treatment arm) are aimed to be included. Patients who wish to undergo breast reconstruction with either one of the two techniques are randomly allocated into the AFT group (intervention) or the tissue-expander/prosthesis group (control). The primary outcome measure for the quality of life is measured by the validated BREAST-Q questionnaire.Ethics and dissemination Approval for this study was obtained from the medical ethics committee of Maastricht University Medical Centre/Maastricht University; the trial has been registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. The results of this randomised controlled trial will be presented at scientific meetings as abstracts for poster or oral presentations and published in peer-reviewed journals.Trial status Enrolment into the trial has started in October 2015. Data collection and data analysis are expected to be completed in December 2021.Trial registration number NCT02339779.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient numerical technique based on the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to model the flow through a reference drip emitter geometry. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the applicability of the LBM as a reliable simulation tool for the hydraulic optimisation of irrigation systems. Results for the water flow through a rectangular drip emitter are in good agreement with literature numerical and experimental data. Furthermore, we demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model to simulate a multi-component flow that could be used to simulate the presence of additives, contaminants, and suspended particles.

Abstract

Tourism suffered more than many other sectors amid Covid-19 travel restrictions. This article looks at the impact of the pandemic on the territorial redistribution of tourist flows in the Baltic region. The study draws on regional annual and monthly data on international and domestic tourist arrivals between 2019 and 2021, available on the websites of the statistical offices of the Baltic Region countries. The regions earlier dependent on tourist arrivals from Russia experienced the largest drop in inbound tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic. Yet, domestic tourism burgeoned in most of the region’s countries. In 2021, the most dramatic increase in domestic arrivals occurred, year on year, in the border regions of Russia’s Northwest Federal District; the growth was also notable in Finland and the Baltic States. Domestic tourist flow compensated, partially or even fully, for the decrease in inbound tourist flow in most regions. The structure of inbound tourism changed markedly during the pandemic, with the share of tourists from the Baltic States growing. The strongest rise was in some regions of southern Finland and more modest in Latvia and Lithuania.

7. Autologous Fat Transfer for Facial Rejuvenation: A Systematic Review on Technique, Efficacy, and Satisfaction

Abstract

Background:. Parallel to the steady decline in surgical aesthetic procedures to the face, dermal fillers seem to have gained a more prominent place in facial rejuvenation over the last couple of years. As a dermal, facial filler, autologous fat transfer (AFT) seems to have real potential because of the biocompatibility of adipose tissue besides being a procedure with few and primarily minor complications. This systematic review aims to evaluate the available evidence regarding the safety and effectiveness of AFT for facial rejuvenation. Method:. A systematic review after the Preferred-Reporting-Items-for-Systematic-Reviews-and-Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement was conducted. MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched up to December 2016, with no language restrictions imposed. Case series, cohort studies, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting on relevant outcomes were included. Results:. Eighteen clinical articles were included, reporting on 3,073 patients in total over a mean follow-up period of 13.9 months. Meta-analysis showed an overall complication rate of 6% (95% CI 3.0–14.0), with hematoma/ecchymosis (5%), fat necrosis/oil cysts (2%), and irregular fat distribution and scars (both 2%) being among the most reported. No major complications were reported, and the overall patient satisfaction rate was 81%. Conclusion:. Although the evidence in this systematic review is still limited and plagued by heterogeneity between studies, AFT seems to be a promising method in facial rejuvenation with fewer complications than other fillers and high patient satisfaction rates. Further large-cohort, preferably multicenter, RCTs should substantiate these results through quantifiable volumetric assessment tools and validated patient questionnaires, while adhering to predetermined nomenclature in terms of complications.

Abstract

Aircraft monitoring systems offer enhanced safety, reliability, reduced maintenance cost and improved overall flight efficiency. Advancements in wireless sensor networks (WSN) are enabling unprecedented data acquisition functionalities, but their applicability is restricted by power limitations, as batteries require replacement or recharging and wired power adds weight and detracts from the benefits of wireless technology. In this paper, an energy autonomous WSN is presented for monitoring the structural current in aircraft structures. A hybrid inductive/hall sensing concept is introduced demonstrating 0.5 A resolution, < 2% accuracy and frequency independence, for a 5 A – 100 A RMS, DC-800 Hz current and frequency range, with 35 mW active power consumption. An inductive energy harvesting power supply with magnetic flux funnelling, reactance compensation and supercapacitor storage is demonstrated to provide 0.16 mW of continuous power from the 65 μT RMS field of a 20 A RMS, 360 Hz structural current. A low-power sensor node platform with a custom multi-mode duty cycling network protocol is developed, offering cold starting network association and data acquisition/transmission functionality at 50 μW and 70 μW average power respectively. WSN level operation for 1 minute for every 8 minutes of energy harvesting is demonstrated. The proposed system offers a unique energy autonomous WSN platform for aircraft monitoring.

Abstract

The introduction of new emissions tests in real driving conditions (Real Driving Emissions—RDE) as well as of improved harmonized laboratory tests (World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure—WLTP) is going to dramatically cut down NOx and particulate matter emissions for new car models that are intended to be fully Euro 6d compliant from 2020 onwards. Due to the technical challenges related to exhaust gases’ aftertreatment in small-size diesel engines, the current powertrain development trend for light passenger cars is shifted towards the application of different degrees of electrification to highly optimized gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. As such, the importance of reliable multidimensional computational tools for GDI engine optimization is rapidly increasing. In the present paper, we assess a hybrid scale-resolving turbulence modeling technique for GDI fuel spray simulation, based on the Engine Combustion Network “Spray G” standard test case. Aspects such as the comparison with Reynolds-averaged methods and the sensitivity to the spray model parameters are discussed, and strengths and uncertainties of the analyzed hybrid approach are pointed out. The outcomes of this study serve as a basis for the evaluation of scale-resolving turbulence modeling options for the development of next-generation directly injected thermal engines.

Abstract

Abstract A measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section is presented in the region of low momentum transfers, 0.2 GeV2 ≤Q 2≤12 GeV2, and low Bjorken x, 5⋅10−6≤x≤0.02. The result is based on two data sets collected in dedicated runs by the H1 Collaboration at HERA at beam energies of 27.6 GeV and 920 GeV for positrons and protons, respectively. A combination with data previously published by H1 leads to a cross section measurement of a few percent accuracy. A kinematic reconstruction method exploiting radiative ep events extends the measurement to lower Q 2 and larger x. The data are compared with theoretical models which apply to the transition region from photoproduction to deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract

Pharmacodynamics deals with drugs’ mode of action and effectiveness. We explore the interactions between drug molecules and biological structures. Pharmaceuticals’ action can be divided into two types: Structurally specific and non-specific. The quantum analysis we introduce with a Similarity Principle (SP), provides an opportunity for a theoretically and practically applicable profound (at the level of elementary particles) elucidation of interaction mechanisms between medicinal substances and biological structures. Objectives: This paper aims to create a single universal mechanism explaining drug action at a micro-level where no difference between animate and inanimate nature exists and in the process of exploring phytotherapeutic effects on diseased cells to find a universal answer to the questions asked here. Methods: We introduce the quantum analysis as a scientific method to analyze these problems. Quantum objects are nucleus and particles. Under “quantification” we understand the occupation of precisely defined values. We call quantum the minimal value of change of any quantity (physical or of another kind). The quantum is also identified by the quality of energy, radiated or absorbed by the micro particles of matter during the smallest possible change of its state. The similarity principle is an inseparable part of this analysis. Results: Medicinal substances must bind to the functionally impaired biological structure. According to modern pharmacology, this process takes place because of the so-called affinity. Cells with the biologically active substance (mx mass) of the medicinal substance approach and interact with the functionally impaired cells of the biological structure (Mx mass) because of the gravitational force of attraction. An exchange is performed at particle level-exchange of functional and sovereign quanta of life. Thus, a healing process occurs. Conclusion: The new perspective of cell division, autophagy, and apoptosis, could show the way for a workable antiviral and anticancer defense of biological structures.

Abstract

Summary Lazaroid U-74389G is a synthetic 21-aminosteroid with free radical-scavenging and anti-inflammatory effects. This study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of U-74389G on experimental 2,4-dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid hydrate (DNBS)-induced colitis in Wistar rats. Five experimental groups were formed: a sham control group, a control group, treated with 0.25 ml of 50% ethanol intrarectally (n=8), a group treated with DNBS (30 mg in 0.25 ml of 50% ethanol administered intrarectally, (n=8), a group treated with DNBS and U-74389G at a daily dose of 15 mg/kg i.p. (n=8), and a group treated with DNBS and sulfasalazine, orally, at a dose of 300 mg/kg. During the experiment, the bodyweight of the rats, food intake, stool consistency, and presence of blood in the stool were recorded as markers of clinical condition. On day 6, colonic tissues were excised and scored for macroscopic and histological damage. Blood samples were taken to measure levels of cytokines by ELISA methods. DNBS decreased significantly body weight (from 237.00±2.52 g to 212.50±6.25 g, p=0.04). The rats treated with U-74389G showed greater food intake and weight gain. Background: Autologous fat transfer (AFT), also known as fat grafting or lipofilling, has already become a part of clinical practice for treating contour deformities of the breast, even though evidence regarding its efficacy is still lacking. This is the first meta-analysis on this subject, aimed to facilitate intuitive interpretation of the available data by clinicians, guideline committees and policy makers. Methods: A literature search was performed on 1 September 2017 in PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library to identify all relevant studies. A rigorous data extraction and standardisation process allowed pooling of clinical outcome data into a meta-analysis. Results: Eighty-nine studies consisting of 5350 unique patients were included. The mean follow-up was 1.9 years. Meta-analysis revealed a very high overall patient and surgeon satisfaction rate of 94.3% and 95.7%, respectively, which was also confirmed by high satisfaction scores and Breast-Q scores. Overall, only 1.5 sessions were needed to achieve the desired result. Though evidence on the long-term volume retention is lacking, based on the current data it was calculated to be 52.4% at one year. Only 5.0% of procedures resulted in clinical complications and 8.6% of breasts required biopsy due to abnormal clinical or radiological findings. Conclusions: AFT seems to be an effective procedure in breast reconstruction, reflected by the high patient and surgeon satisfaction and low incidence of clinical and radiological complications. Future research should focus on evaluating the technical and patient factors influencing the rate of fat resorption as well as its oncological safety. Abstract

Background Autologous fat transfer, also known as lipofilling, is a minimally invasive technique that uses the patient's own fat to correct disfiguring sequelae after breast cancer surgery. Despite its obvious clinical benefits, experimental research has demonstrated that autologous fat transfer inherently stimulates angiogenesis and tissue regeneration, which is feared to increase the risk of locoregional recurrence of breast cancer. This meta-analysis is founded on recently completed large cohort studies on this highly relevant topic. Methods A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library on 1 September 2017, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, to identify all relevant studies of patients with breast cancer exposed to autologous fat transfer. The difference in incidence rate of locoregional recurrence between patients who had autologous fat transfer and controls was the primary outcome in the meta-analysis. Results Fifty-nine studies and a total of 4292 patients were included. These consisted of seven matched cohorts, 12 cohorts and 40 case series. Mean follow-up was 5·7 years from the date of primary cancer surgery and 2·7 years after autologous fat transfer. Meta-analysis of matched cohorts revealed an incidence rate difference of –0·15 (95 per cent c.i. –0·36 to 0·07) per cent per year, which was not statistically significant (P = 0·419). This finding was confirmed in the pooled results of the remaining cohorts and case series. Conclusion This meta-analysis of all oncological data from the published literature demonstrated that autologous fat transfer did not result in an increased rate of locoregional recurrence in patients with breast cancer. Autologous fat transfer can therefore be performed safely in breast reconstruction after breast cancer.

Abstract

IMPORTANCE: The use of autologous fat transfer (AFT) or lipofilling for correcting contour deformities is seen as one of the major breakthroughs in reconstructive plastic surgery. Its applications in facial reconstructive surgery have been of particular interest owing to the prospect of achieving autologous reconstruction by a minimally invasive approach. However, its unpredictability and variable degree of resorption have limited its utility and much skepticism still exists regarding its efficacy. Furthermore, more than 2 decades of clinical research have produced a highly fragmented body of evidence that has not been able to provide definite answers. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of AFT in facial reconstruction through a systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from inception to October 11, 2017. STUDY SELECTION: All published studies investigating the efficacy and safety of AFT in facial reconstructive surgery. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Two independent reviewers performed data extraction systematically, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines. Summary measures were pooled in a random-effects model meta-analysis. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The patient and surgeon satisfaction, graft survival, number of AFT sessions, and the incidence of AFT-related complications were the main outcomes of interest in this meta-analysis. RESULTS: This systematic review resulted in the inclusion 52 relevant studies consisting of 1568 unique patients. These included 4 randomized clinical trials, 11 cohort studies, and 37 case series. The overall follow-up averaged 1.3 years after AFT. Meta-analysis revealed a very high overall patient satisfaction rate of 91.1% (95% CI, 85.1%-94.8%) and overall surgeon satisfaction rate of 88.6% (95% CI, 83.4%-92.4%). The number of AFT sessions required to achieve the desired result was 1.5 (95% CI, 1.3-1.7) and 50% to 60% of the injected volume was retained at 1 year. Only 4.8% (95% CI, 3.3%-6.9%) of procedures resulted in clinical complications. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: To our knowledge, this study provides the first overview of the current knowledge about AFT in facial reconstructive surgery. Our results confirm that AFT is an effective technique for treating soft-tissue deformities in the head and neck, with low rate of minor complications. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: NA.

Abstract

Autologous fat transfer (AFT), also known as lipofilling, has been demonstrated to be more than just a filler. Through both mechanical dissection and local tissue remodelling mediated by stem cells, it is thought to improve scar quality, function and even pain. This paper aims to investigate the evidence regarding its safety and effectiveness for treating fibrosis and scar-related conditions.A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library to identify relevant studies. Extensive data extraction and standardization allowed conducting a meta-analysis.Forty-five studies (3033 patients) provided sufficient data for meta-analysis. The AFT treatment resulted in significant increase in satisfaction scores of both patient and surgeon (p = 0.001). Furthermore, a significant overall scar improvement was also found in the evaluation using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale, with the most notable effect in the scar stiffness (p0.001) and pliability (p = 0.004). In patients with severe pain, AFT resulted in a significant pain reduction of 3.7 points on the Visual Analogue Scale (p0.001). Last, but not the least, the evidence suggests a significant recovery of radiotherapy-induced tissue damage (p = 0.003) and function (p = 0.012). On average, 1.4 procedures were required to achieve the desired result. Minor complications occurred in 4.8% of the procedures.AFT is a promising treatment for fibrosis and scar-related conditions. Future research should focus on determining the long-term effects of AFT on fibrosis, pain and function. In addition, it would be crucial to quantify the mechanical and regenerative properties of fat as well as the effect of added supplements or stem cells.

Abstract

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium is an insufficiently researched aggressive tumor with a short survival regard­less of the treatment type. We present here the 38th consecutive case of literature reported cases of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the endometrium (posi­tive for synaptophysin, CD56, chromogranin A, p53, and Vimentin) found in the myomatous uterus of a 76-year-old woman. We also describe in the study the morphological algorithm for differentiation of malignant blastomas with small (under 10 %) neuro-endocrinal component. Accumulated clinical and morphological evidence raises the question whether the large-cell and the small-cell neuroendocrine carcino­mas are just different variations according to their histology and topical occurrence (uterine body/cervix) or they are just independent forms with their respective clinical signs, morphology, treatment, and prognosis.

Abstract

IMPORTANCE Autologous fat transfer (AFT or fat grafting) has become an invaluable tool for the correction of disfiguring deformities after breast cancer surgery. However, clinical and animal studies have shown conflicting results regarding its oncologic safety.OBJECTIVE To determine whether exposure to AFT vs conventional breast reconstruction is associated with increased rates of cancer relapse in patients with breast cancer.DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This matched cohort study involved retrospective medical record review to identify all patients in a local patient database receiving AFT between 2006 and 2014. Each AFT case was matched with a nonexposed control patient with similar baseline characteristics. The mean (SD) follow-up of patients receiving AFT was 9.3 (4.9) years including 5.0 (1.7) years following AFT. Control patients were followed up for a mean (SD) of 8.6 (1.8) years from the primary surgery. Patients were identified through the local patient database of the Tergooi Hospital in Hilversum, the Netherlands. A total of 287 patients with breast cancer (300 affected breasts) who received AFT for breast reconstruction after cancer were included in the intervention group. Each AFT case was matched with a respective control patient based on age, type of oncologic surgery, tumor invasiveness, and disease stage. In addition, individual AFT-control pairs were selected to have the same locoregional recurrence-free interval at baseline. Data were analyzed between 2016 and 2017.EXPOSURES Reconstruction with AFT vs conventional breast reconstruction or none.MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Primary end pointswere the cumulative incidences of oncologic events in AFT and control patients and their respective hazard ratios.RESULTS Of the 587 total patients, all were women and the mean age was 48.1 years for the patients undergoing AFT and 49.4 years for the control patients. Eight locoregional recurrences were observed in the treatment group (287 patients) and 11 among the control group (300 patients), leading to an unadjusted hazard ratio of 0.63 (95% CI, 0.25-1.60; P =.33). No increased locoregional recurrence rates were seen in relevant subgroups based on the type of oncological surgery, tumor invasiveness, or pathological stage. In addition, no increased risks with AFT were detected with respect to distant recurrences or breast cancer-specific mortality.CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE No significant differences in the locoregional recurrence rates between the AFT and control groups were observed after 5 years of follow-up. These findings confirm the results of previous studies; therefore, clinical evidence suggesting that AFT is associated with increased risk for cancer relapse is still lacking.

The aim of current work was a part of study for animal husbandry effects on emissions of greenhouse gases and some mitigation strategies between the end of XX and the beginning of XXI century. It?s emphasized on nitrogen (N) balance and its fluctuated values, as well as brings forward attendant factors. As a result, we deducted strong correlation models (R2> 0.89, 0.85, 0.99), as an estimator of the N2O emissions (Gg.CO2-eq), generated by manure management in relation to animal population (monogastric, ruminant, total) among the investigated middle-term periods throughout 1989 - 2011 y for the Bulgarian realities.

Abstract

This report presents data on the long-term strength of five composites made of plastic waste. They contain low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene (LDPE, HDPE, PP and PS). Long-term strength is determined experimentally by tensile creep to fracture. The experimentally determined long-term strength is compared to predictions for its probabilistic boundaries. The calculation method of these predictions uses data from short-term experiments. The calculated predictions are true for four compositions which exhibit ductile fracture. The composite containing 50 wt.% PS has the greatest strength (of the tested specimens) and has brittle fracture. Its calculated estimate of long-term strength is not consistent with the experimental one.

Abstract

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the influence of ageing on the morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of virgin and two types of recycled (from technological and postconsumer wastes) modified polyolefin blends. Immiscible blends of virgin low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) in weight ratio 1:1 were modified with the ethylene–propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber impact modifier. The efficiency of modification was investigated as a function of modifier content in the range from 7 to 15 wt%. The blends were prepared by extrusion using a corotating twin screw extruder Brabender DSE35/ 17D at melt temperature in the range from 150 to 200C and a screw speed of 20 rpm. Compression-molded samples were subjected to natural and accelerated ageing and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical testing. The experiments show that the ageing processdeteriorates the mechanical properties of the PP/LDPE blends, and this is more clearly expressed in the blends of virgin material. The results show that the presence of the EPDM modifier delays the process of ageing in PP/ LDPE blends. Autologous lipoaspirate grafting (ALAG) has become a widely used treatment in breast reconstruction after mastectomy (MST) or breast-conserving treatment (BCT), although there is an ongoing debate about its oncological safety. The aim of this systematic review was to identify, evaluate, and synthesize all clinical evidence examining the oncological risks associated with the procedure.An extensive electronic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library using the keywords "breast" and "autologous lipoaspirate grafting" and synonyms.The search yielded a total of 269 unique hits. Twenty clinical trials investigated ALAG in breast reconstruction after cancer. Although nine of them provided oncological follow-up data, only one retrospective cohort and four case series were suitable for analysis. The former reported no significant differences in the locoregional recurrence (LRR) incidence rates between the intervention and control groups for patients with MST as well as BCT. A large multicenter case series reported LRR incidence rates of 1.35 and 2.19 for MST and BCT patients, respectively. The remaining two series were far smaller trials with shorter follow-up and reported no recurrences. No randomized, controlled trials were identified. Most of the available studies consisted of cohorts and case series with short follow-up and no control subjects.Although the first reports on cancer recurrence after ALAG are inconclusive, they show promising results. Whether lipoaspirate grafting promotes LRR in breast cancer patients is still unclear. To be able to answer this question, larger prospective trials with longer follow-up are needed.

The overall model of the form: dα / dt = ( K ′ + Kα m )(1 − α ) n , known as Kamal's model, has been analysed in this work. Although it can describe well the isothermal DSC experiment, the statistical criteria does not allow fixing exactly the adjustable power exponents in the model. In turn, the overall “reaction order” varies in a large range at almost identical confidence limits. The model evaluated in isothermal DSC mode at different values of m and n has been tested. The test has not been found out reliable to describe the data at varying temperature.

The inclusive production of D*(+/-)(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic e(+/-)p scattering is measured in the kinematic region of photon virtuality 100 1 5 GeV The data were collected by the H1 experiment during the period from 2004 to 2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 351 pb(-1) The charm contribution. Abstract

A measurement of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering gamma*p --> gamma p using e(+) p and e(-) p collision data recorded with the HI detector at HERA is presented. The analysed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 306 pb(-1), almost equally shared between both beam charges. The cross section is measured as a function of the virtuality Q(2) of the exchanged photon and the centre-of-mass energy W of the gamma*p system in the kinematic domain 6.5 < Q(2) < 80 GeV2, 30 < W < 140 GeV and |t| < 1 GeV2, where t denotes the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The cross section is determined differentially in t for different Q(2) and W values and exponential t-slope parameters are derived. Using e(+) p and e(-) p data samples, a beam charge asymmetry is extracted for the first time in the low Biorken x kinematic domain. The observed asymmetry is attributed to the interference between Bethe-Heitler and deeply virtual Compton scattering processes. Experimental results are discussed in the context of two different models, one based on generalised parton distributions and one based on the dipole approach. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Inclusive non-diffractive photoproduction of rho(770)(0), K*(892)(0) and phi(1020) mesons is investigated with the H1 detector in ep collisions at HERA. The corresponding average gamma p centre-of-mass energy is 210 GeV. The mesons are measured in the transverse momentum range 0.5 < p(T) < 7 GeV and the rapidity range vertical bar y(lab)vertical bar < 1. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity, and are compared to the predictions of hadroproduction models. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

For modeling the effect of volume change on the viscoelastic properties of a polymer, an equation underlying the concept of free volume is used. The parameters of the moisture-time reduction function, characterizing changes in the viscoelastic properties of an epoxy-based composition, are determined from tests results. To verify the approach suggested, results of long-term (up to one year) tests on stress relaxation under compression in an epoxy composition (COMFLOOR), both in the initial state and after a long-term (up to one year) exposure to water, are used. A satisfactory agreement between the reduction functions based on predictions and determined experimentally is found to exist.

The first measurement of diffractive scattering of quasi-real photons with large momentum transfer γ p → γ Y, where Y is the proton dissociative system, is made using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is performed for initial photon virtualities Q 2 < 0.01 GeV 2. Abstract

We show in this work that the heat flow signal as acquired applying DSC to systems in an excess of epoxy must be proportional to the rate of consumption of the excess component but not to the rate of reaction. The rate equations reasoning from this finding have been analysed. According to the model, a DSC data set monitoring the reaction progress of an epoxy excess system must be identical to that exhibiting the reaction advance of the formulation at stoichiometry. Experimental data confirming the proposed methodology have been presented. Both non-isothermal and isothermal DSC experiments support adequately the model. The non-linear transform from the excess component measurement into the reaction rate expression has been also commented in the study from the point of view of the kinetics.

A first measurement is reported of the longitudinal proton structure function FL(X, Q(2)) at the ep collider HERA. It is based on inclusive deep inelastic e(+)p scattering cross section measurements with a positron beam energy of 27.5 GeV and proton beam energies of 920, 575 and 460 GeV. Abstract

This study was done with the aim to establish the season dynamics of ethological indicators: lying, standing, feeding and drinking of milk cows with is result of such abiotic factors as: temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity movement in production environment. The animals were bred during the year in closed covered brick barn with natural ventilation. From the analysis of the received results is clear that the parameters of the ethological reactions are changing in a cycle during the seasons of the year. This is an expression of the reaction towards the influence of the abiotic factors of the environment.

Abstract

Inclusive jet production is studied in neutral current deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at large four momentum transfer squared Q^2>150 GeV^2 with the H1 detector at HERA. Single and double differential inclusive jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2 and of the transverse energy E_T of the jets in the Breit frame. The measurements are found to be well described by calculations at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The running of the strong coupling is demonstrated and the value of alpha_s(M_Z) is determined. The ratio of the inclusive jet cross section to the inclusive neutral current cross section is also measured and used to extract a precise value for alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1193+/-0.0014(exp.)^{+0.0047}_{-0.0030}(th.)+/-0.0016(pdf).

Abstract

Measurements are presented of diffractive open charm production at HERA. The event topology is given by ep -> eX Y where the system X contains at least one charmed hadron and is well separated by a large rapidity gap from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y. Two analysis techniques are used for the cross section measurements. In the first, the charm quark is tagged by the reconstruction of a D*(2010) meson. This technique is used in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction. In the second, a method based on the displacement of tracks from the primary vertex is used to measure the open charm contribution to the inclusive diffractive cross section in DIS. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton density functions previously obtained from a QCD analysis of the inclusive diffractive cross section at H1. A good agreement is observed in the full kinematic regime, which supports the validity of QCD factorization for open charm production in diffractive DIS and photoproduction., 39 pages, 13 figures, 8 tables

Abstract

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A large number of studies investigating the correlation between severity of atopic dermatitis and various biomarkers have been published over the past decades. The aim of this review was to identify, evaluate and synthesize the evidence examining the correlation of biomarkers with disease severity in atopic dermatitis patients, something that has not been performed previously. RECENT FINDINGS: Three electronic databases were systematically searched and relevant studies were selected for inclusion. A total of 222 articles, reporting on 115 different biomarkers in 30 063 patients, were critically appraised. Studies were divided into two main groups. The first group consisted of longitudinal randomized controlled trials and cohort studies, which reported measurements at multiple time points. The second contained cross-sectional studies that reported only one measurement per patient. Out of 222 articles, 108 articles reported sufficient data for meta-analysis. Only four biomarkers were eligible for meta-analysis in the longitudinal group, and nine in the cross-sectional group. SUMMARY: Serum thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) was found to be the most reliable biomarker studied, showing pooled correlation coefficients of 0.60 (95% CI 0.48-0.70) and 0.64 (95% CI 0.57-0.70) in longitudinal and cross-sectional studies, respectively. Additional biomarkers that could prove useful but require additional research include serum cutaneous T-cell attracting chemokine (CTACK), sE-selectin, macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and interleukin (IL)-18.

Abstract

A search for a narrow baryonic resonance decaying to K(s)(0)p or K-s(0)(p) over bar is carried out in deep inelastic ep scattering with the H1 detector at HERA. ss Such a resonance could be a strange pentaquark Theta(+), evidence for which has been reported by several experiments. The K(s)(0)p and K-s(0)(p) over bar invariant ss mass distributions presented here do not show any significant peak in the mass range from threshold up to 1.7 GeV. Mass dependent upper limits on sigma(ep -> e Theta X+) x BR(Theta(+) -> K(0)p) are obtained at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract

Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e^+p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality 12 \le Q^2 \le 60 GeV^2 and of the Bjorken scaling variable 0.0002 \le x \le 0.005. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. Values for the structure functions F_2^{c\bar{c}} and F_2^{b\bar{b}} are obtained. This is the first measurement of F_2^{b\bar{b}} in this kinematic range. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and withprevious measurements of F_2^{c\bar{c}}.

Abstract

A combination is presented of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations in neutral and charged current unpolarised e ± p scattering at HERA during the period 1994-2000. The data span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, Q 2, and in Bjorken x. The combination method used takes the correlations of systematic uncertainties into account, resulting in an improved accuracy. The combined data are the sole input in a NLO QCD analysis which determines a new set of parton distributions, HERAPDF1.0, with small experimental uncertainties. Abstract

The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) is a suitable candidate gene to test for involvement in the pathogenesis of major psychiatric disorders. We used the method of family-based controls to test for association between disease and a variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) in intron 2 of the gene, which has received support for involvement in the pathogenesis of several psychiatric disorders. We analysed 413 proband-parent trios of Bulgarian origin: 266 had a schizophrenic proband, 103 had a bipolar proband and 44 had a schizoaffective proband. The results were analysed using the extended transmission disequilibrium test. Possible effects of different alleles on certain clinical variables were examined by correlation analysis. Three alleles were detected: STin2.9, STin2.10 and STin2.12. None of the three diagnostic samples showed preferential transmission of alleles that reached conventional levels of statistical significance. We could not confirm previous results that STin2.12 allele increases susceptibility to bipolar disorder type I. The rare STin2.9 showed a non-significant trend for preferential transmission in the sample as a whole: 18 transmitted versus 11 non-transmitted (P = 0.2). The VNTR polymorphism in the 5-HTT gene does not appear to be a major risk factor for increasing susceptibility to major psychiatric disorders.

Abstract

We propose a method to reduce the bandpass of soft x-ray multilayer Bragg reflectors. It consists in etching down to the substrate a multilayer mirror having a large number of bilayers in order to get a lamellar grating with a multilayer bar width representing only 10%–30% of the grating period. The grating is used at the zeroth diffraction order. Once designed, this monochromator was tested with the Lα,β spectra of iron and copper.

Abstract

In this article, we consider the diffraction of an electromagnetic wave by a lamellar amplitude multilayer grating (LAMG), in conical mountings, when the incident wave vector is not in a plane perpendicular to the grooves. A modal expansion technique based on Bloch's theorem is used with an R-recursive propagation scheme. We compare the zeroth order diffraction efficiency measurements with the theoretical results.

Abstract

A Lamellar Multilayer Amplitude Grating (LMAG) etched in a multilayer mirror was designed for an efficient use in the 1 keV region, through a multistep process involving sputtering coating, electron lithography and reactive ion etching. The multilayer structure has 115 W/B 4 C bilayers of 3.1 nm thickness, and the grating of period 1.33 μm has a small line-to-period ratio Γ equal to about 0.10. The properties of a LMAG illuminated in standard and conical mountings by a polychromatic radiation are given, and the concept of a “polychromator” based on a LMAG is presented. Taking benefit from the specific properties of a LMAG, the emission of a soft X-ray tube equipped with a copper target is spectrally analyzed with our LMAG in the Cu-L (930 eV) region in standard and conical mountings. This experiment shows that a LMAG could be an interesting spectral analyzer for short-duration X-ray sources.
