- Abstract
This paper aims to find the impact of COVID-19 on Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) libraries and the measures taken to overcome the challenges in accessing the information during the COVID-19 situation and render services to the users. A structured questionnaire was prepared and distributed to ten libraries of MAHE at Manipal, India campus. The study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on the usage of resources and services provided by MAHE libraries. The libraries were kept open, but the working hours of the libraries have been reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that the majority of the libraries have seen a significant decrease in the use of physical resources and an increase in the usage of digital resources. The majority of the respondents agreed that online assistance to projects and research had been provided. The analysis reveals that limiting the number of users into the physical library, mandatory face mask, provision of sanitizers at the library entrances and maintenance of social distancing were some of the measures taken by the libraries of MAHE during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study revealed that MAHE libraries have a rich collection of e-books, online journals, online databases, e-learning platforms and research support tools. Remote access facility was extensively used by the users of MAHE libraries to access the relevant literature for teaching, learning, patient care and research activities and thus to meet their information needs.

A case study of off campus (remote) access to licensed/subscribed electronic resources (e-resources) of the Health Sciences Library of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal University, Manipal, which offers diverse sets of electronic information resources for its users, is presented here. User community, residing outside the campus and off campus were disadvantaged by the inability to access library e-resources in their hours of need. Due to the pressing demand from the user community for off/remote campus access to the subscribed e-resources, library initiated the search for an appropriate off campus login access solution and identified EZproxy remote access software as the solution. EZproxy platform provides a single point remote access to various subscribed resources of the library. This article gives various steps involved in the implementation of off campus access facility in the library with its benefits, conditionality for access and technical details.http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/djlit.34.6.7509

- Abstract
The library is a knowledge center where all the resources, regardless of print and e-resources are made available to the user. E-resources are the backbone of any digital library in this information superfluous era. Most of the modern library users are referring e-resources for their learning, teaching and research activities. Remote login access to e-resources is the best practice of any library which helps the users to access their desired information wherever they stay without wasting time. It gives an opportunity for the best use of the e-resources and offers easy access to various resources of the library through its interface from anywhere. In this study, an attempt has been made to understand the perception of users of the remote access facility provided by the Health Sciences Library, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. The main aim of the study is to determine the satisfaction level of users about the remote access facility provided by the library. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted. Questionnaires were sent to 187 registered users of remote access service of the library. Journals are key to scholarly communication and study of the utilisation of subscribed electronic journals (e-journals) is important for libraries. A case study of usage of the subscribed e-journals in the KMC Health Sciences Library of Manipal University (MU), Manipal was conducted through citation analysis from the year 2010 to 2014. The study was performed with the objectives to determine-citations of subscribed e-journals made in academic publications of five health sciences institutions of MU, Manipal; annual growth rate of the publications and the citations; and frequently cited journals and those selected for publishing their documents. The Scopus citation database was used to retrieve all documents published from the five health science institutions using affiliation search, and from their reference list, the number of citations to the subscribed e-journals of the library were manually recorded. The study identified subscribed e-journals that were cited in published documents, cited frequently, and were selected for publishing the documents. The outcome showed that citation analysis is a practical and reliable method to provide usage information of the subscribed e-journals library.

With the advent of Internet and rapid development of other information technologies, there is a paradigm change in the quantity and quality of health information available to medical professionals. There is a plethora of information available on subjects such as medical conditions/disorders, treatments, drug and other therapies and research on the Internet. Though Internet has created new opportunities to improve decision-making to handle typical cases related to healthcare, it has also generated many unprecedented problems. The changing nature of information distribution has important implications for healthcare: issues like the quality of care and the validity and consistency of available information. The quality of health information available on the Internet is important, because it has the potential to benefit or harm a large number of people. The paper discusses the problems of aplenty of medical-related information available on the Internet, and how to sift the quality information from the available information. The paper recommends the development of technology-based tools that support the assessment and development of quality health information on the Internet. DOI: 10.14429/djlit.28.6.220

Application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the best practices observed in libraries as it enables automation and modernisation of library services. Today's environment is digitally driven and library semi-professionals play an important role in providing up-to-date information to the users using modern technologies. The objective of the present study was to assess the perception of semi-professionals with respect to the use of ICT in Manipal Academy of Higher Education Libraries by them. 58 Library Assistant working in the seven constituent institutional libraries of MAHE at Manipal campus were included in the study and data were collected using questionnaire. The findings of the study revealed that EasyLib, the library automation software, and Electronic Public Access Catalogue (EPAC) had most impact on the role of semi-professionals (84.2 %) in providing ICT enabled services to the users. More than thirty percent (31.5 %) of the semi-professionals were of the opinion that ICT has considerably changed their duties and responsibilities. Semi-professionals are also of the opinion that they are now in a position to provide faster, more accurate and up-to-date information services to the users in their libraries. The findings of the present study support a need to implement the appropriate technologies in the libraries as they support the semi-professionals in their library housekeeping activities as well as in providing effective library services to the users. Transformed data presented in a meaningful way for users is information, whereas knowledge is the capability for actionable information. Knowledge sharing is among the major goals of academic communities, and therefore, the emphasis on knowledge sharing and management is the central issue for the academic libraries. It includes the process of identification, retrieval and potential utilisation of knowledge to help the end-users at the times of their need. Portals render support to this knowledge management (KM) process. Knowledge portal or web portal is designed to support KM, and it facilitates transfer, storage, retrieval, creation, integration and application of knowledge in academic institutions. Libraries are the repositories of all forms of information resources for the knowledge base that supports academic curricula. A web portal with an appropriatelink to the required information resources is an important tool for KM. This article discuss the web portal as a KM tool in academic libraries and outlines a design for a simple web portal with Hyper Text Markup Language to manage the resources of a library attached to academic institutions like school, college and university libraries.

Learning is a continuous process and effective learning relates to students' attitudes, feelings and approach towards the subject of learning. To excel in their academic curricula students must acquire, evaluate and use the available information effectively. One of the mandates of today's higher education is to develop a community of students with information literacy (IL) skills while pursuing their education and enable them to further extend it to their future workplace. This paper examines the information literacy competency of post-graduate students of pharmaceutical sciences course at Manipal University, Manipal. The present case study, conducted prior to and after an Information Literacy Instruction (ILI) program at the Health Sciences Library of Manipal University, Manipal, assesses different aspects of information competency for utilization of information resources. Data were collected through a survey prior to IL session and through feedback response at the end of the session (after the session). Structured questionnaires were distributed to all the participants (125) before and after the instruction program. Students' awareness about the library website, availability of types of resources of the library, familiarity with the name of online database in the health sciences field, knowledge about the use of library catalogue, bibliographic databases and open access resources; confidence level related to search skills before and after the ILI and the usefulness of ILI program were assessed during the study. The results indicated that the information literacy instruction had a positive influence on effective learning of information literacy skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
