We present the first measurements of asteroids in millimeter wavelength (mm) data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT), which is used primarily to study the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We analyze maps of two $\sim270$ deg$^2$ sky regions near the ecliptic plane, each observed with the SPTpol camera $\sim100$ times over one month. We subtract the mean of all maps of a given field, removing static sky signal, and then average the mean-subtracted maps at known asteroid locations. We detect three asteroids$\text{ -- }$(324) Bamberga, (13) Egeria, and (22) Kalliope$\text{ -- }$with signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) of 11.2, 10.4, and 6.1, respectively, at 2.0 mm (150 GHz); we also detect (324) Bamberga with S/N of 4.1 at 3.2 mm (95 GHz). We place constraints on these asteroids' effective emissivities, brightness temperatures, and light curve modulation amplitude. Our flux density measurements of (324) Bamberga and (13) Egeria roughly agree with predictions, while our measurements of (22) Kalliope suggest lower flux, corresponding to effective emissivities of $0.66 \pm 0.11$ at 2.0 mm and $, 21 pages, 9 figures

High-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies with very high star formation rates (500 -- 3000 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) are key to understanding the formation of the most extreme galaxies in the early Universe. Characterising the gas reservoir of these systems can reveal the driving factor behind the high star formation. Using molecular gas tracers like high-J CO lines, neutral carbon lines and the dust continuum, we can estimate the gas density and radiation field intensity in their interstellar media. In this paper, we present high resolution ($\sim$0.4$^{\prime\prime}$) observations of CO(7-6), [CI](2-1) and dust continuum of 3 lensed galaxies from the SPT-SMG sample at $z\sim$ 3 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Our sources have high intrinsic star-formation rates ($>$850 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$) and rather short depletion timescales ($, 29 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A. Forecasting of Mustard Aphid, Lipaphis erysimi Kaltenbach on Rapeseed Crop

An approach to assess and represent air quality status through an Air Quality Index (AQI), in major metropolitan cities, where different types of activities, viz . industrial, commercial and residential are in progress, on a short and a long term basis is presented. To make the index more informative, air quality status is classified into five different categories, viz . Clean, Moderate, Poor, Bad and Dangerous. Long term air quality indices are then calculated for four metropolitan cities and one city, which is fast developing each representing the different climatological features in India viz . Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai and Nagpur. The air quality index is calculated according to national standards stipulated for different pollutants and zones.

Inhalable particulates (particulates less than 10 micron) present in ambient air find passage into the respiratory system due to their small size and impair the health. Surveillance of inhalable particulates is, therefore, essential for assessing an inhalation health hazard. The activity also provides guidance for appropriate protection against the ill effects. Monitoring of inhalable particulates requires a high-volume sampler retrofitted with a size selective inlet (SSI) to separate and sample specified size-range fractions of suspended particulate matter in air. Measurement of inhalable particulates indirectly represents anthropogenic activity. In view of this, surveillance of inhalable particulates was conducted in select metropolitan cities of India during 1995-1997 to find out changes in their concentration. The inhalable particulates were measured by retrofitting a suitably designed SSI to the standard high-volume sampler. The study revealed that the concentration of inhalable particulates in the ambient air increased due to industrial activities up to 320, 168, and 546% and due to commercial activities up to 406, 198, and 140% in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi, respectively. An increase in inhalable particulates' concentration during the above period also showed a marked seasonal variation. The increase due to commercial activity, however, did not show a definite tendency.

Economic injury levels (EILs) were determined for the aphid Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) infesting rapeseed variety DYS‐3 of yellow sarson under natural infestation during 1987–88 and 1988–89 and with the use of insecticide during 1988–89 and 1989–90 to compare the EILs under different conditions. The natural aphid infestation did not affect yield adversely until 80 and 100 days of crop age in 1987–88 and 1988–89 respectively. Using insecticide application, the significant decline in yield started from 80 and 90 days during 1988–89 and 1989–90 respectively. In a yield‐infestation study the period of crop growth between 70 and 100 days was most crucial, when the crop required at least two sprays of Quinalphos at a 20‐day interval. Under natural infestation, the EIL with the best fitting relationship was 1.2 aphids per plant in 1987–88 (loglinear), and 14.2 aphids per plant in 1988–89 (quadratic). OBJECTIVES--To assess the incidence and significance of anticardiolipin antibodies after myocardial infarction and in unstable angina. DESIGN--A prospective study of all patients under 60 admitted to the coronary care unit over a 12 month period with a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction who were followed up for a further 12 months. Patients admitted with unstable angina were similarly assessed but not followed up. Anticardiolipin antibody concentrations were compared with those of age matched controls. SETTING--A district general hospital. PATIENTS--307 patients with acute myocardial infarction and 160 patients with unstable angina. RESULTS--Anticardiolipin antibody concentrations in the two patient groups did not differ significantly from those in the control groups. Antibody concentrations were not related to a history of angina or myocardial infarction nor were they related to subsequent cardiovascular complications. CONCLUSION--This study shows no significant association between anticardiolipin antibody concentrations and either myocardial infarction or unstable angina.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in presence of sunlight and oxides of nitrogen in atmosphere are considered as precursors for ozone production at the ground level. Concentration of Benzene, Toluene and Xylene (BTX) in ambient air was measured near seven traffic junctions in the city of Nagpur. Air samples were collected using Organic Vapour Sampler and analyzed by Gas Chromatograph equipped with Flame Ionization Detector (FID). Benzene concentration was found to be in the range 9.3 to 28.7 microg/m3, Toluene 3.26 to 21.0 microg/m3 and Xylene 4.9 to 15.0 microg/m3. These values are lower than those found in Metropolitan cities like Mumbai.

The electron temperatures in a.c. discharges of frequency 50 c/s excited between plane parallel glass electrodes in air have been measured at various pressures. The electron temperatures have been computed by employing the Johnson—Malter double-probe technique. It is seen that the electron temperature increases from 8-5 × 104 ° K to 12-8 7× 104 °K as the pressure is reduced from 10 Torr to 01 Torr. The nature of the variation of the electron temperature with pressure is seen to be similar to the corresponding variation in the case of d.c. discharges, as well as that in the case of audio frequency discharges between metal electrodes. This similarity indicates that, after the stable discharge is obtained, the discharge between the insulating electrodes is similar to that in the case of conducting electrodes.

This article describes the design and construction features of a VHF log-periodic aerial. The desired features of this wide band, moderate gain and limited directivity aerial are indicated. The design parameters are discussed and the construction features are described. The methods used for measuring aerial characteristics are described and test results are discussed. The performance figures compare favourably with similar aerials available commercially abroad. The aerial is constructed from indigenously available materials. The aerial costs less than a third of an imported aerial of similar performance. The aerial is suitable for receiving and low-power transmitting applications and is specially suitable for monitoring work.

The electron temperatures and electron densities in alternating discharges at audio frequencies excited between metal electrodes for various pressures have been measured by using the double probe method. The electron temperature is seen to remain constant for all frequencies up to 20 kc/s for any particular pressure. The electron temperature increases from 4·1 × 104 °K to 7·6 × 104 °K, while the electron density decreases from 6·3 × 108 electrons/cm3 to 4·4 × 108 electrons/cm3 as the pressure is reduced from 0·1 torr to 0·001 torr. The variation of electron temperature with pressure is seen to be similar to the corresponding variation in the case of the d.c. discharge showing that the a.c. discharges up to 20 kc/s are similar to d.c. discharges under similar conditions.

The paper gives a report of the measurement of atmospheric noise interference to broadcasting in the S Mc./s. band at Poona (18·31°N 73·55°E.), during the hours 18.00 to 23.00 (I.S.T.) by the method described by Aiya. The results are utilized to compute the data on noise necessary for broadcast services. These data are compared with the estimates of CRPL, Washington, and the measurements carried out on behalf of the Radio Research Board, London, at places in or near India. The discrepancies are explained and it is shown that both give lower values of noise. Noise levels are estimated from lightning discharge data and compared with measured values. There is close agreement between the estimates and the measured values. In all these comparisons, it is shown that such of the differences, as arise between the 3 Mc./s. measurements reported elsewhere and the 5 Mc./s. measurements, arise entirely from the differences in the propagation characteristics at the two frequencies.

Summary: The development of a second neoplasm is a rare complication in patients with various types of primary malignancy. This report describes two patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who developed adenocarcinoma of the lung and malignant pleural effusion following many years of cytotoxic therapy. The value of cytological examination of the sputum and pleural aspirate, as well as fibreoptic bronchial biopsy in the diagnosis are emphasised. The higher incidence of this complication in patients with lymphocytic type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma may be due to their longer survival and probable basic immune defects which become overt after chemotherapy.

Summary: Sideroblastic anaemia and leukaemia in multiple myeloma. K. P. Phadke, Y. L. Kwan and S. G. Young, Aust. N.Z. J. Med., 1978, 8, pp. 539–543. Two patients with IgA myeloma and one patient with kappa light chain disease developed sideroblastic anaemia from two to four years after the initial diagnosis. All had previously received radiotherapy and chemotherapy (melphalan and prednisone). In two patients the myeloma was quiescent when the sideroblastic change occurred. Leukaemia occurred in two patients two and seven months respectively after the diagnosis of sideroblastic anaemia was made. In one of them, the myeloma became active again at the same time. The development of sideroblastic anaemia may be a preleukaemic event and may be recognised by the appearance of a dimorphic blood film.

A chemical analysis of suspended particulate matter (SPM) collected near the world famous Taj Mahal monument at Agra has been carried out. SPM samples collected on glass fibre filters were analysed for water-soluble sulphate, nitrate, chloride and ammonium ions. The data were derived from over 200 samples (each of 24 h), collected continuously during the winter periods (October through to March) of 1984-1985 and 1985-1986. The SO(4)(2-) and NO(3)(-) components are acidic in nature causing corrosion and effects on visibility, and so were studied in more detail. Mean values for SO(4)(2-) and NO(3)(-) derived from two-year data are 7.2 microg m(-3) and 8.2 microg m(-3), respectively. The SO(4)(2-)/SO(2) and NO(3)(-)/NO(2) ratiosobserved indicate faster conversion of SO(2) to SO(4)(2-) than NO(2) to NO(3)(-), the maximum levels being in January. Thus, both SO(4)(2-) and NO(3)(-) results appear to offer more promising indices of air quality than do SPM data alone.
