In order to simulate foreign object damage (FOD) phenomenon in aircraft high-pressure compressor blades made of a nickel-based super-alloy, Johnson–Cook (J–C) plasticity model was used. For prediction of material’s plastic behavior at temperature of 400 °C (working temperature of the blades) in the range of strain rates associated with the FOD phenomenon (in order of 106 s−1), material parameters of A, B, C, n and m for the J–C plasticity model had to be determined experimentally. Parameters of A, B and n with values of 1108, 699 MPa and 0.5189, respectively, were obtained from quasi-static tensile tests. Moreover, m was determined to be 1.2861, also through quasi-static tensile tests with a strain rate of 1 s−1 at three temperatures of 475, 550 and 625 °C. However, in order to determine C, firstly a steel ball was impacted on the surface of a flat specimen made of a precipitation-hardening alloy, and then, the impact site was 3D scanned to obtain the induced crater profile. Finally, the impact test (ballistic) was simulated using Abaqus, and a C value of 0.0085 was determined by comparing the actual crater profile with the one obtained from the simulation through a trial-and-error approach.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of surface melting using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process and rapid solidification on the microstructure and hardness of Ni-free biomedical Co–28Cr–5Mo-0.3%C alloy. The microstructural studies revealed that surface melting via TIG welding process results in uniform distribution of the nano-sized M 23 C 6 carbides in the range of 10–100 nm at γ-fcc/e-hcp interface. It was found that the volume fraction of the athermal martensite plays a key role on the size of the finely dispersed nano-sized M 23 C 6 carbides at γ-fcc/e-hcp interface. The hardness of TIG-treated surface was found to be greater than as-cast alloy which could be attributed to the dispersion of the nano-sized carbides at γ-fcc/e-hcp interface as well as higher volume fraction of athermal martensite.

In this paper, we have studied the effect of a number of loading cycles on fabrics bagging behavior, and then investigated the influence of factors such as sample weight, test speed, and sphere diameter on the worsted fabrics bagging behavior using response surface method (RSM). Six worsted fabric types with different weights were prepared and then the bagging properties of these fabrics were measured using a newly developed test method. Bagging parameters including bagging force, work, fatigue, resistance, hysteresis, and residual height are calculated. Then, a statistical model (RSM) was used for the experimental plan (with these factors) to determine the runs of an experiment (or selected points). The experimental results showed that sample weight and sphere diameter have a significant effect while test speed has no significant effect on the bagging parameters. Also, the fitted models of bagging parameters are obtained and coefficient effects are estimated.

Foreign object damage (FOD) is one of the common mechanisms in turbine blade failures which reduces high cycle fatigue life and contributes significantly to premature failure. Therefore, this study experimentally simulated FOD on the first stage blade of a gas turbine. Foreign objects with two parameters of object nose shape (spherical, conical, and flat) and impact angle (90° and 45° relative to the blade surface) were impacted on the surface of flat specimens of Udimet-500 at a temperature of 733°C with velocity of 300 m/s (same as working condition of blades). In order to evaluate the impact site morphologies, induced craters were first studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then samples were sectioned symmetrically, and by using image analysis tool software, the depth of each crater was measured. Finally, based on the results, it was found that maximum and minimum stress concentration factors and induced microcracks, respectively, are regarding to flat projectiles with impact angel of 45° and spherical at impact angle of 90°.

Design by Analysis (DBA) based on nonlinear finite element analysis provides an efficient method to design subsea pipeline components. This approach is widely used in oil and gas industry for subsea pipeline components design and pressure vessels. In contrast to linear analysis and stress linearization/categorization, the nonlinear finite element analysis approach provides a more accurate and efficient design route. The design codes encourage the use of the nonlinear analysis approach especially for components with complex geometry. In this paper, the Design by Analysis approach of ASME VIII D2 and BS-EN-13445-3 using nonlinear finite element method are compared and discussed. These two codes are widely used standards for design of pipeline components and pressure vessels. The philosophy of both codes is limit state involving load and resistance factors. In this paper, emphasis is given to component design in ultra-deep water condition and its significant effect on design during operational cyclic loads. For comparison purpose, a subsea inline Tee is designed to both codes and subsequently the design outcomes are compared and discussed.

This paper proposes an inverse strategy for relocation of structural natural frequencies using first order formulation and solution algorithm. In the proposed method a sensitivity analysis of the systems eigenvalues with respect to material or geometrical parameters of the structure is conducted initially. The required parameter variation to achieve a desired frequency shift for the structure is then computed. The proposed technique incorporates the design constraints or objective functions in the system equations in such a way that a square system of equations is always preserved. The formulations are general and applicable to all finite element structures because the sensitivity analysis is based on the stiffness and mass matrices regardless of the type of elements used. An algorithm suitable for implementation of the technique for practical purposes is developed. The accuracies of the proposed methods are tested conducting several case studies and the results are validated against exact solutions.

The use of hypo-elastic constitutive equations for large strains in nonlinear finite element applications usually requires special considerations. For example, the strain does not tend to zero upon unloading in some elastic loading–unloading closed cycles. Furthermore, these equations are based on objective material time rate tensors, which require incrementally objective algorithms for numerical applications and integration. Hyper-elastic constitutive equations on the other hand do not require such considerations. However, their behaviour for large elastic strains is important and may differ in tension and compression. In the present work, Hyper-elastic constitutive equations for the Seth–Hill strains and their conjugate stresses are explored as a natural generalisation of Hook’s law for finite elastic deformations. Based on the uniaxial and simple shear tests, the response of the material for different constitutive equations is examined. Together with an objective rate model, the effect of different constitutive laws on Cauchy stress components is compared. It is shown that the constitutive equation based on logarithmic strain and its conjugate stress gives results closer to that of the rate model. In addition, the use of Biot stress–strain pairs for a bar element results in an elastic spring which obeys the Hook’s law even for large deformations and has the same behaviour in both tension and compression. The effect of the constitutive equation on the volume change of the material has also been considered here.

In this paper, general relations between two different stress tensors T f and T g , respectively conjugate to strain measure tensors f ( U ) and g ( U ) are found. The strain class f ( U ) is based on the right stretch tensor U which includes the Seth–Hill strain tensors. The method is based on the definition of energy conjugacy and Hill’s principal axis method. The relations are derived for the cases of distinct as well as coalescent principal stretches. As a special case, conjugate stresses of the Seth–Hill strain measures are then more investigated in their general form. The relations are first obtained in the principal axes of the tensor U . Then they are used to obtain basis free tensorial equations between different conjugate stresses. These basis free equations between two conjugate stresses are obtained through the comparison of the relations between their components in the principal axes, with a possible tensor expansion relation between the stresses with unknown coefficients, the unknown coefficients to be obtained. In this regard, some relations are also obtained for T (0) which is the stress conjugate to the logarithmic strain tensor ln U .

This paper presents formulations for inverse optimisation of vibration behaviour of finite element models of both truss and continuous structures. The proposed algorithms determine the required modifications on truss and continuous structures to achieve specified natural frequencies. The modification can be carried out globally or locally on the structures stiffness and matrices and the formulation can also be used to add new structural members to achieve the desired response. Numerical examples and finite element implementation of the developed method are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the formulations.

This work presents the details of a finite element-based numerical method to analyse general contact/impact problems, called united elements method (UEM). In contrast to usual methods, that is Lagrange Multipliers and Penalty Function, this method is conceptual, suitable for computer programming, and free from inherent deficiencies of those methods. The key points of this procedure are elimination of the normal degree of freedom of the contactor node from the system energy potential functional in terms of target surface motion, and proper calculation of target element unbalanced forces, to incorporate the contact constraints. After a review on classic formulations, the mathematical and matrix presentation of the united element stiffness matrix are discussed. Solution of some examples adopting a Newton–Raphson-based solution, together with a normal return scheme, support the capability and accuracy of the procedure in static and dynamic problems.

In this paper, conjugate stresses of the Seth–Hill strain measures are treated by means of the definition of energy conjugacy and Hill’s principal axis method. This approach results in relations between components of two different conjugate stress tensors. The results are valid for distinct as well as coalescent principal stretches. Illustrative examples are solved to demonstrate the simplicity and usefulness of the derived relations between conjugate stress tensors.

In this paper, a solution method is presented for the analysis of contact/impact between deformable bodies. The method is different from Lagrange multipliers and Penalty methods. Having defined a body as contactor and the other as target, it is assumed that contact forces are developed between contactor nodes and target surface. The method is based on stiffness transformation and eliminating the normal degree of freedom of contactor node. The method is absolutely general and can be used in static and dynamic nonlinear problems. All the drawbacks of Lagrange multipliers and Penalty method are vanished in this technique and it can be easily implemented in computer programs. The efficiency and applicability of the method is demonstrated by several illustrative examples.

In this paper, a finite element method is presented in details to solve a nonlinear partial differential equation with mixed boundary conditions which has many applications in engineering fields. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method. Comparison of results, using analytical and numerical solutions, reveals a very good agreement between two methods.

Purpose: MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) has many potential and realized applications including controlled heating and localized drug delivery. The development of many of these applications requires extensive preclinical work, much of it in small animal models. The goal of this study is to characterize the spatial targeting accuracy and reproducibility of a preclinical high field MRgFUS system for thermal ablation and drug delivery applications. Methods: The RK300 (FUS Instruments, Toronto, Canada) is a motorized, 2-axis FUS positioning system suitable for small bore (72 mm), high-field MRI systems. The accuracy of the system was assessed in three ways. First, the precision of the system was assessed by sonicating regular grids of 5 mm squares on polystyrene plates and comparing the resulting focal dimples to the intended pattern, thereby assessing the reproducibility and precision of the motion control alone. Second, the targeting accuracy was assessed by imaging a polystyrene plate with randomly drilled holes and replicating the hole pattern by sonicating the observed hole locations on intact polystyrene plates and comparing the results. Third, the practicallyrealizable accuracy and precision were assessed by comparing the locations of transcranial, FUS-induced blood-brain-barrier disruption (BBBD) (observed through Gadolinium enhancement) to the intended targets in a retrospectivemore » analysis of animals sonicated for other experiments. Results: The evenly-spaced grids indicated that the precision was 0.11 +/− 0.05 mm. When image-guidance was included by targeting random locations, the accuracy was 0.5 +/− 0.2 mm. In this paper, an underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN) is modeled with the help of queueing theory in order to evaluate the maximum stable throughput of the network. To this end, a new scenario for multi-layer mobile UWSN is considered. Then, a new MAC algorithm comprised of random access scheme (like MACAW) and CDMA-based data transmission along with a simplified routing algorithm is proposed. In order to analyze the considered UWSN scenario, we propose two related queueing networks, one for modeling the wireless node mobility and the other for representing the process of multi-hop packet transmission according to considered MAC and routing algorithms. Finally, the maximum stable throughput of the network is derived by solving the related traffic equations and applying the stability condition. In order to verify the proposed analytical approach, we simulate the UWSN scenario and compare analytical and simulation results.

Although the histologic anatomy of the lower eyelid retractors is well defined, the physiology of the lower retractors has been determined only by interference based on anatomic and clinical findings. In this study, in five normal subjects we investigated the physiology of the lower eyelid retractors utilizing dynamic high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a custom designed surface coil. Measurements of the excursion of the cornea, lower eyelid margin, and anterior edge of the inferior oblique muscle were made from scans taken in upgaze and downgaze. We found that the corneal movement was substantially greater than the movement of the eyelid margin, a finding that can readily be made clinically. A more important result was that the movement of the eyelid margin and the movement of the inferior oblique margin were similar in all cases. Thus, the length of the anterior capsulopalpebral fascia between the tarsus and inferior oblique muscle remains constant in downgaze, and the source of the stretch in the lower eyelid retractors lies in the posterior capsulopalpebral system, at the capsulopalpebral head. High resolution eyelid MR has great potential to allow investigation of essential aspects of normal and pathologic eyelid anatomy and physiology.

More and more emphasis is being made on alternatives to invasive surgery and the use of ionizing radiation to treat various diseases including cancer. Novel screening, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of response to treatment are also hot areas of research and new clinical technologies. Ultrasound(US) has gained traction in all of the aforementioned areas of focus. Especially with recent advances in the use of ultrasound to noninvasively treat various diseases/organ systems. This session will focus on covering MR-guided focused ultrasound and the state of the art clinical applications, and the second speaker will survey the more cutting edge technologies e.g. Focused Ultrasound (FUS) mediated drug delivery, principles of cavitation and US guided FUS. Magnetic radiofrequency (RF) fields applied during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may induce heating in devices made from conductive materials. The present paper reports on theoretical and experimental studies on the RF heating resonance phenomenon of an endovascular guidewire. A nitinol-based guidewire was inserted into a vessel phantom and imaged at 1.5 and 0.2 T with continuous temperature monitoring at the guidewire tip. The heating effects due to different experimental settings were examined. A model is developed for the resonant current and the associated electric field produced by the guidewire acting as an antenna. Temperature increases of up to 17 degrees C were measured while imaging the guidewire at an off-center position in the 1.5 T MR system. Power absorption produced by the resonating wire decreased as the repetition time was increased. No temperature rise was measured at 0.2 T. Considering the potential utility of low-field, open MR systems for MRI-guided endovascular interventions, it is important to be aware of the safety of such applications.

Simultaneous acquisition of positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance (MR) images using an MR-compatible PET system will obviate the need for image registration and will allow unique studies of structure and function of living organisms in one setting. Here we report on simultaneous acquisition of PET and MR images on a clinical 1.5 T system using a 54 mm diameter prototype MR-compatible PET system (McPET). Phantom experiments were performed in order to determine the effect of the McPET system on MR images. The results demonstrated the system to be fully MR compatible, in both its detector head construction and operation. The McPET construction offers a promising method for design of a large-scale MR-compatible PET system that will be useful in functional studies of the brain.

There are compelling reasons for merging high-resolution anatomical information from magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with the functional images attainable with positron emission tomography (PET). The ideal solution to this intermodality image registration is to acquire PET and MR scans simultaneously with imaging systems that are fixed relative to each other, which will permit near-perfect image registration. This is particularly important for studies of small brain structures or in animal studies. A prototype PET system has been developed that permits PET and MR images to be acquired simultaneously. It consists of seventy-two 2 × 2 × 5-mm lutetium oxyorthosilicate crystals coupled by 2-mm-diameter, 4-m-long double-clad optical fibers to three multichannel photomultiplier tubes shielded inside an aluminum enclosure. The detector ring diameter is 56 mm. The scanner provides a single-image plane with a transaxial field of view of 28 mm and 1-mm full-width-at-half-maximum slice thickness. The reconstructed resolution is 2 mm. This PET system is shown to be compatible with a clinical 1.5-T MR scanner. Possible image degradation caused by simultaneous imaging has been measured. The PET and MR phantom images show no noticeable image artifacts or distortions resulting from dual modality image acquisition. The first in vivo simultaneous PET and MR images have also been obtained from a rat brain, demonstrating the feasibility of simultaneous PET and MR studies of in vivo systems.

Our objectives were to further characterize an artifact related to the localized failure of the frequency-selective (FATSAT) fat suppression magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique. We constructed two phantoms simulating human orbital anatomy and imaged them on a 1.5-T MR scanner using (FATSAT) and short T1 inversion recovery (STIR) techniques of fat suppression. The first phantom resembled orbit structural configurations; it was imaged in coronal and axial planes and in varying orientations with respect to the main magnetic field (Z axis) to study the features of the artifact and to reproduce the asymmetry seen in clinical cases. We designed the second phantom to enable quantification of the change in artifact size with change in orientation. We imaged the orbits of a normal human volunteer in similar planes and orientations, and compared the results to clinical cases demonstrating the artifact and true orbital disease. The artifact identified with localized failure of FATSAT fat suppression manifested as regions of hyperintensity maximal at fat-air interfaces, with gradual fading of the increased signal with distance from the interfaces. The artifact was most prominent when the interfaces were perpendicular to the axis of the main magnetic field (Z axis). The regions of increased brightness obscured normal orbital structures but were not associated with alterations in the geometry of these structures. Changes in orientation of the interfaces with respect to the Z axis, both in the phantoms and normal volunteer, reproduced the asymmetry of fat suppression failure seen in clinical cases. The relationship of size of the artifact to change in orientation was non-linear. The artifact was not seen on STIR images. We concluded that failure of FATSAT fat suppression may mimic orbital disease, particularly if asymmetric. As predicted by the Maxwell electromagnetism equation, slight variations in orientation of the fat-air interface to the Z axis may produce large asymmetries in fat suppression failure in the orbit. Confirmation may require either comparison with additional pulse sequences [T1-weighted spin echo (T1W SE) or STIR] or repositioning the patient's head to check for persistence of the finding with varying orientations.

Despite significant advances made over the past decade in ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for guidance and assessment of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatments many challenges remain. Recent developments address clinically relevant barriers to image guidance of therapeutic ultrasound. This session will feature invited presentations on (1) the use of MRI temperature mapping in presence of fat, within bone, and moving tissues, (2) dual mode ultrasound array (DMUA) systems for imaging and therapy with the advantage of inherent registration between the image‐guidance and therapeutic coordinate systems, (3) echo decorrelation imaging, providing real‐time feedback about cumulative heat‐induced tissue changes, (4) laparoscopic US imaging and HIFU treatments with special emphasis on the use of US to assess temperature change as well as tissue characteristics; and (5) opportunities for medical physicists to participate in the development, treatment planning, and quality control aspects of image‐guided HIFU therapy. The use of magnetic resonance imaging to directly guide therapy is a new area of investigation. Clinical magnetic resonance imaging has the potential to evolve from a purely diagnostic tool into a guide for invasive procedures. The idea of using magnetic resonance to guide percutaneous biopsy developed one decade ago. Magnetic resonance-guided fine-needle aspiration for head and neck lesions has become a standard technique some institutions. Once the needle reaches a lesion in the head and neck, it is natural to explore the possibility of treatment in the same setting. The concept of interventional magnetic resonance imaging has generated interest among radiologists, surgeons, and manufacturers. This article provides an overview of interventional procedures of the head and neck and other new imaging techniques that have been developed.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of a technique of MR-guided stereotactic radio frequency ablation, which was developed as a minimally invasive treatment for brain tumors, and to determine MR characteristics and sequential evolution of radio frequency lesions created to ablate brain tumors. METHODS: Fourteen lesions in 12 patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors were treated with this technique and followed for up to 10 months. The stereotactic coordinates of the tumor and the angle of the radio frequency probe were calculated on MR imaging. The radio frequency lesion was generated in the awake patient by increasing the temperature to 80 degrees C within the tumor for 1 minute. This was repeated until the entire tumor volume was destroyed. MR imaging was performed before, during, and immediately after the radio frequency procedure, and sequential MR was obtained during clinical follow-up. RESULTS: MR imaging clearly showed well-defined radio frequency lesions and provided feedback for treatment planning. The radio frequency lesion boundary was well identified as a dark signal rim on T2-weighted images and showed ring enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images. The sequential MR imaging showed the radio frequency lesions decreased in volume in all cases, suggesting focal control. CONCLUSION: Stereotactic MR-guided radio frequency brain tumor ablation is a feasible and promising technique that can be an attractive brain tumor treatment alternative. MR provided not only accurate tumor location but also visualization of feedback of thermal tissue changes that reflected therapeutic effect.

Oncologic surgery relies strongly on the hand‐eye coordination of surgeons and their ability to correctly determine surgical margins, distinguishing cancerous from healthy tissues. In recent years a variety of innovative intra‐operative imaging technologies have been developed that allow for more accurate identification of tumor and its boundaries and they help bring quantitative measures to the surgical theater. This symposium will present some of the latest developments in intra‐operative imaging technologies, including cone beam computed tomography,mass spectrometry and optical spectroscopy. Each offers to overcome the limitations of conventional surgical navigation (i.e., tracking in the context of preoperative images) and allow intraoperative assessment of the quality of tumor resection and the avoidance of adjacent, normal anatomy. Such technological advances are key to safer, more precise, and more minimally invasive interventions. In addition, we will discuss the role of medical physicists in the assessment and validation of technologies in image‐guidedoncologic interventions. Learning Objectives: 1. Spontaneous emission is one of the important noise sources in semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs). In this paper we analyze the dynamic behavior of this phenomenon in SLA based on numerical solution of the carrier and field rate equations. From the numerical results we obtain the evolution of the gain and amplified spontaneous emission dynamics which presented for the first time.

In this paper, we analyze the dynamic behavior of semiconductor laser amplifier (SLA) using numerical solution of the carrier and field rate equations. From the numerical results we obtain the gain dynamics, the carrier density evolution, and the transient response of SLA for an input optical pulse and different bias currents.

Validation metrics are key for the reliable tracking of scientific progress and for bridging the current chasm between artificial intelligence (AI) research and its translation into practice. However, increasing evidence shows that particularly in image analysis, metrics are often chosen inadequately in relation to the underlying research problem. This could be attributed to a lack of accessibility of metric-related knowledge: While taking into account the individual strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of validation metrics is a critical prerequisite to making educated choices, the relevant knowledge is currently scattered and poorly accessible to individual researchers. Based on a multi-stage Delphi process conducted by a multidisciplinary expert consortium as well as extensive community feedback, the present work provides the first reliable and comprehensive common point of access to information on pitfalls related to validation metrics in image analysis. Focusing on biomedical image analysis but with the potential of transfer to other fields, the addressed pitfalls generalize across application domains and are categorized according to a newly created, domain-agnostic taxonomy. To facilitate comprehension, illustrations and specific examples accompany each pitfall. As a structured body of information accessible to researchers of all levels of expertise, this work enhances global comprehension of a key topic in image analysis validation.

Pediatric brain and spinal cancers remain the leading cause of cancer-related death in children. Advancements in clinical decision-support in pediatric neuro-oncology utilizing the wealth of radiology imaging data collected through standard care, however, has significantly lagged other domains. Such data is ripe for use with predictive analytics such as artificial intelligence (AI) methods, which require large datasets. To address this unmet need, we provide a multi-institutional, large-scale pediatric dataset of 23,101 multi-parametric MRI exams acquired through routine care for 1,526 brain tumor patients, as part of the Children's Brain Tumor Network. This includes longitudinal MRIs across various cancer diagnoses, with associated patient-level clinical information, digital pathology slides, as well as tissue genotype and omics data. To facilitate downstream analysis, treatment-naïve images for 370 subjects were processed and released through the NCI Childhood Cancer Data Initiative via the Cancer Data Service.
