Abstract

Abstract The nature of the pseudogap and its relationship with superconductivity are one of the central issues of cuprate superconductors. Recently, a possible scenario has been proposed that the pseudogap state is a distinct phase characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking called “nematicity” based on transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements, where the symmetry breaking was observed below the pseudogap temperature T ∗. Here, we report a temperature-dependent ARPES study of nematicity in slightly overdoped Bi1.7Pb0.5Sr1.9CaCu2O8+δ triggered by a uniaxial strain applied along one of the Cu–O bond directions. While the nematicity was enhanced in the pseudogap state as in the previous studies, it was suppressed in the superconducting state. These results indicate that the pseudogap state is characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and that the nematicity may compete with superconductivity. Relationship between the nematicity and charge-density waves, both of which are observed in the pseudogap state, is discussed.

Abstract

High-yield dairy cows need high energy feed during periods of increased milk production. The transitional feeding to high energy feed increases the risk of developing a variety of metabolic disorders. Here, five Holstein cows were fed a four-stage feeding protocol (3 weeks for each stage) ranging from 54.9 to 73.7% total digestive nutrients (TDN). The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of lactic acid bacteria on high-energy-fed cows associated with transitional feeding, and to evaluate the effects of probiotics on intestinal bacterial changes and inflammatory responses. Three feed transition periods were established for five cows, and Lactobacillus plantarum RGU-LP1 (LP1) was fed as a probiotic during the high-energy feeding period. The number of lymphocyte subsets such as CD3-, CD4-, and CD8 positive cells decreased in response to the high energy feed. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cytokine (IL-1β and IL-2) gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was shown to increase in those animals receiving the high energy feed. However, supplementation with LP1 resulted in an increase in the number of lymphocyte subsets and the expression of IL-1β and IL-2 were returned to the level at low energy diet. These results suggest that high energy diets induce inflammatory cytokine responses following LPS stimulation, and that the addition of LP1 mitigates these results by regulating the LPS-induced inflammatory reaction. Therefore, the functional lactic acid bacteria LP1 is expected to regulate inflammation resulting from high energy feeding, and this probiotic could be applied to support inflammatory regulation in high-yield dairy cows.

Abstract

In order to study the possible superconductivity at the polar surfaces of 1111-type iron-based superconductors, which is doped with a large amount of holes in spite of the electron doping in bulk materials, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on superconducting PrFeAsO_{1−y} crystals. We have indeed observed the opening of a superconducting gap on surface-derived hole pockets as well as on a bulk-derived hole pocket. The superconducting gap is found to open on the surface-derived hole pockets below the bulk T_{c}, which suggests that the surface superconductivity is possibly induced by proximity effect from the bulk. We have also observed the opening of a large pseudogap on the surface-derived hole pockets, which is similar to the pseudogap in 122-type bulk superconductors doped with a smaller amount of holes. This suggests that the opening of a large pseudogap is a characteristic property of hole-doped iron-based superconductors.

Abstract

The electron-doped cuprates are usually characterized by a more robust antiferromagnetic phase and a much narrower superconducting (SC) dome than those of the hole-doped counterparts. Recently, bulk single crystals of Pr_{1.3−x}La_{0.7}Ce_{x}CuO_{4−δ} (PLCCO) prepared by the protect annealing method have been studied extensively and revealed many intriguing properties that were different from those obtained from samples annealed by the conventional methods. Here we report on a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PLCCO single crystals after protect annealing. The results indicate that the actual electron concentration (n_{FS}) estimated from the Fermi-surface area is significantly larger than the Ce concentration x and the new n_{FS}-based SC dome of PLCCO is more extended towards the overdoped side than the x-based SC dome derived for samples prepared using the conventional annealing method.

7. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the subserosal layer dissection technique in dogs: 34 cases (2015-2021)

Abstract

To describe a standardised subserosal layer dissection technique and evaluate its outcomes in canine laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Medical records of dogs undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the standardised subserosal layer dissection technique for the treatment of cholecystolithiasis, cholecystitis, and gall bladder mucocele at a single veterinary hospital from January 2015 to September 2021 were extracted. Operative time, subserosal layer dissection achievement rate, open conversion rate, and complication rate were evaluated.Thirty-four dogs were included. The most common preoperative diagnosis was cholecystolithiasis (n=29). Operative time was 190 minutes (range: 110 to 330 minutes). Subserosal layer dissection of more than 90% of the gall bladder bed was achieved in 27 (79%) dogs. Conversion to open surgery was required in three (8.8%) dogs. There were no cases of intraoperative bleeding, bile duct injury, or reoperation.This study showed that laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the standardised subserosal layer dissection technique could be performed successfully in dogs. Future prospective clinical studies are needed to determine safety and effectiveness of this technique compared to standard techniques.

Abstract

A infecção pelo vírus da imunodeficiência felina (FIV) em gatos domésticos é caracterizada por distúrbios imunológicos, que geralmente se manifestam tardiamente na doença. Semelhante à infecção pelo vírus da imunodeficiência humana (HIV) em humanos, a infecção pelo FIV geralmente está associada a infecções oportunistas e ao desenvolvimento progressivo de nefropatia. Portanto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar as alterações histopatológicas em rins de 10 gatos experimentalmente infectados pelo FIV submetidos a eutanásia 60 meses após a inoculação viral. Nos rins de 100% dos gatos infectados pelo FIV foram visualizadas lesões glomerulares e tubulointersticiais. As lesões glomerulares eram caracterizadas principalmente por espessamento global ou segmentar da membrana basal glomerular (glomerulonefrite membranosa). Glomeruloesclerose e, em dois casos, proliferação de células epiteliais intraglomerulares (crescente glomerular), também foram observados. Nefrite intersticial linfoplasmocítica foi a alteração tubulointersticial mais frequente, visualizada em diferentes intensidades nos rins de 100% dos gatos. Os resultados do presente estudo demonstram que o tempo prolongado entre a infecção e a avaliação histopatológica pode ter sido decisivo para o surgimento das lesões renais em todos os gatos infectados pelo FIV e para o agravamento dessas lesões em alguns gatos.

Abstract

Super-Kamiokande has been searching for neutrino bursts characteristic of core-collapse supernovae continuously, in real time, since the start of operations in 1996. The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 yr−1 on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

Abstract

Na atualidade, o sorovar Copenhageni é o representante do sorogrupo Icterohaemorrhagiae, mantido por roedores sinantrópicos, que tem prevalecido nos cães e seres humanos das grandes metrópoles brasileiras. A despeito de alguns autores sugerirem a existência de proteção cruzada entre sorovares incluídos em um mesmo sorogrupo esta condição ainda não foi suficientemente esclarecida para os sorovares Icterohaemorrhagiae e Copenhageni. No presente trabalho cães adultos com dois a seis anos de idade primo-vacinados com três doses intervaladas de 30 dias a partir dos 60 dias de idade e revacinados anualmente com vacina anti-leptospirose polivalente contendo os sorovares Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Grippotyphosa e Pomona foram revacinados com a mesma vacina e aos 30 dias da revacinação foram submetidos aos testes de soroaglutinação microscópica (SAM) e de inibição do crescimento de leptospiras in vitro (TICL), para avaliação comparativa dos níveis de anticorpos produzidos para os sorovares Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae e Copenhageni. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a imunidade conferida pela vacina para o sorovar Icterohaemorrhagiae é mais duradoura que a observada para o sorovar Canicola, já que títulos de anticorpos neutralizantes >1,0 log10 foram observados antes do reforço vacinal não havendo substancial aumento após a revacinação. Quanto ao sorovar Canicola, a revacinação resultou em considerável aumento do título de anticorpos neutralizantes quando comparado ao momento anterior a revacinação (p=0,001). A análise dos valores encontrados após a revacinação demonstrou claramente que cães revacinados com bacterina produzida com o sorovar Icterohaermorrhagiae não apresentam aumento do título de anticorpos inibidores do crescimento contra o sorovar Copenhageni, em nível suficiente para inibir o crescimento de leptospiras. Apesar disso, os títulos de anticorpos inibidores de crescimento anti-Copenhageni encontrados antes e após a revacinação demonstraram que, pelo menos certo grau de proteção contra a infecção por esse sorovar pode ser esperado para os cães vacinados com bacterinas do sorovar Icterohaemorrhagiae, não sendo, no entanto, uma proteção cruzada completa.

Abstract

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $\mu$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. Abstract

Spin-polarized electrons confined in low-dimensional structures are of high interest for spintronics applications. Here, we investigate the electronic structure of an ordered array of Bi monomer and dimer chains on the Ag(110) surface. By means of spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find Rashba-Bychkov split bands crossing the Fermi level with one-dimensional constant energy contours. These bands are up-spin polarized for positive wave vectors and down-spin polarized for negative wave vectors, at variance with the Rashba-Bychkov model that predicts a pair of states with opposite spin in each half of the surface Brillouin zone. Density functional theory shows that spin-selective hybridization with the Ag bulk bands originates this unconventional spin texture.

Abstract

We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218±9 μs. We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 \pm 9 \mu s.

Abstract

The rapid emergence of AIDS in humans during the period between 1980 and 2000 has led to extensive efforts to understand more fully similar etiologic agents of chronic and progressive acquired immunodeficiency disease in several mammalian species. Lentiviruses that have gene sequence homology with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have been found in different species (including sheep, goats, horses, cattle, cats, and several Old World monkey species). Lentiviruses, comprising a genus of the Retroviridae family, cause persistent infection that can lead to varying degrees of morbidity and mortality depending on the virus and the host species involved. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes an immune system disease in domestic cats (Felis catus) involving depletion of the CD4+ population of T lymphocytes, increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections, and sometimes death. Viruses related to domestic cat FIV occur also in a variety of nondomestic felids. This is a brief overview of the current state of knowledge of this large and ancient group of viruses (FIVs) in South America.

Abstract

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a worldwide infection and is considered a significant pathogen. The diagnosis of FIV infections is mainly based on commercially available rapid tests that are highly expensive in Brazil, hence it is rarely performed in the country. Furthermore, lentiviruses grow slowly and poorly in tissue cultures, making the production of viral antigen by classic means and thus the establishment of FIV immunodiagnosis impracticable. In order to deal with this, recombinant DNA techniques were adopted to produce the protein p24, a viral capsid antigen. The protein's reactivity evaluation analyzed by Western blot indicated that this recombinant antigen can be a useful tool for the immunodiagnostic of FIV infections.O vírus da imunodeficiência felina tem distribuição mundial e é considerado um patógeno significativo. No Brasil, a prática diagnóstica é baseada principalmente em teste rápidos, importados e de custo elevado, disponíveis comercialmente. Devido ao seu custo proibitivo em nosso país, o diagnóstico da infecção pelo FIV é raramente realizado. Ademais, os lentivírus se multiplicam lenta e pobremente em cultura de células, o que torna a produção de antígeno por meios clássicos e o estabelecimento do imunodiagnóstico impraticável. Com o objetivo de lidar com esta questão, técnicas de DNA recombinante foram utilizadas para produção de um antígeno do capsídeo viral, a proteína p24. A avaliação da reatividade realizada por Western blot indicou que este antígeno recombinante pode ser útil para o imunodiagnóstico de infecções pelo FIV.

Abstract

The bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii is the etiological agent of an acute, severe disease called Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the United States or Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) in Brazil. In addition to these two countries, the disease has also been reported to affect humans in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Argentina. Like humans, dogs are also susceptible to R. rickettsii infection. However, despite the wide distribution of R. rickettsii in the Western Hemisphere, reports of R. rickettsii-induced illness in dogs has been restricted to the United States. The present study evaluated the pathogenicity for dogs of a South American strain of R. rickettsii. Three groups of dogs were evaluated: group 1 (G1) was inoculated ip with R. rickettsii; group 2 (G2) was infested by R. rickettsii-infected ticks; and the control group (G3) was infested by uninfected ticks. During the study, no clinical abnormalities, Rickettsia DNA or R. rickettsii-reactive antibodies were detected in G3. In contrast, all G1 and G2 dogs developed signs of rickettsial infection, i.e., fever, lethargy, anorexia, ocular lesions, thrombocytopenia, anemia and detectable levels of Rickettsia DNA and R. rickettsii-reactive antibodies in their blood. Rickettsemia started 3-8 days after inoculation or tick infestation and lasted for 3-13 days. Our results indicate that a Brazilian strain of R. rickettsii is pathogenic for dogs, suggesting that canine clinical illness due to R. rickettsii has been unreported in Brazil and possibly in the other South American countries where BSF has been reported among humans.

Abstract

Introduction There is a wide range of problems associated with ejaculation, including decreased semen volume, vaginal ejaculation problems, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, hematospermia, and pain associated with ejaculation. However, there is no simple questionnaire that can comprehensively evaluate these ejaculatory functions. Objective In this study, we evaluated the overall ejaculation function of the patients in question using an originally developed ejaculation function score (Kimura and Shoji's Ejaculation Function Score). Methods We examined 20 patients who visited our sexual function outpatient clinic with a chief complaint of ejaculation. As a control group, we also examined 20 patients who had undergone vasectomy using the same score. The questionnaire consisted of the following five items (1) Awareness of sufficient momentum, (2) Pleasant sensation during ejaculation, (3) Presence of pain associated with ejaculation, (4) Presence of blood in semen, and (5) Perception of decreased semen volume. The total score was also evaluated. In addition, satisfaction with the current ejaculation was assessed. Results The mean age of the ejaculation disorder group was 43.5±15.1 years. The main complaints were decreased semen volume in 7 cases (35%), vaginal ejaculation disorder in 6 cases (30%), delayed ejaculation in 2 cases (10%), premature ejaculation in 2 cases (10%), lack of orgasm in 1 case (5%), and pain associated with ejaculation in 1 case (5%). The mean scores for each item were 1.5 for item 1, 1.8 for item 2, 3.0 for item 3, 3.0 for item 4, and 2.0 for item 5, resulting in a mean total score of 11.2. On the other hand, the mean age of the vasectomy group was 42.0±9.4 years, item 1 was 2.8, item 2 was 2.9, item 3 was 3.0, item 4 was 3.0, item 5 was 2.9, and the mean total score was 14.6. When the two groups were compared, significant differences were found except for items 3 and 4. There was also a significant difference in satisfaction of present ejaculation with mean scores of 1.3 and 2.9. As a result of examining the clinical severity and the total score, the total score of 5-6 was considered severe, 7-9 moderate, 10-13 mild ejaculation disorder, and 14-15 within the normal range. Conclusion Although our ejaculation function score is still in the developmental stage, we believe that it can be a screening tool for ejaculation function in practical medical care and self-assessment. Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande detector can be used to search for neutrinos in time coincidence with gravitational waves detected by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration (LVC). Both low-energy ($7-100$ MeV) and high-energy ($0.1-10^5$ GeV) samples were analyzed in order to cover a very wide neutrino spectrum. Follow-ups of 36 (out of 39) gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-2 catalog were examined; no significant excess above the background was observed, with 10 (24) observed neutrinos compared with 4.8 (25.0) expected events in the high-energy (low-energy) samples. A statistical approach was used to compute the significance of potential coincidences. For each observation, p-values were estimated using neutrino direction and LVC sky map ; the most significant event (GW190602_175927) is associated with a post-trial p-value of $7.8\%$ ($1.4\sigma$). Additionally, flux limits were computed independently for each sample and by combining the samples. Abstract

A search for neutrinos produced in coincidence with Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRB) was conducted with the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. Between December 2008 and March 2017, the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network recorded 2208 GRBs that occurred during normal SK operation. Several time windows around each GRB were used to search for coincident neutrino events. No statistically significant signal in excess of the estimated backgrounds was detected. The $\bar\nu_e$ fluence in the range from 8 MeV to 100 MeV in positron total energy for $\bar\nu_e+p\rightarrow e^{+}+n$ was found to be less than $\rm 5.07\times10^5$ cm$^{-2}$ per GRB in 90\% C.L. Abstract

We have searched for proton decay via p→e+π0 and p→μ+π0 modes with the enlarged fiducial volume data of Super-Kamiokande from April 1996 to May 2018, which corresponds to 450 kton·years exposure. We have accumulated about 25% more livetime and enlarged the fiducial volume of the Super-Kamiokande detector from 22.5 kton to 27.2 kton for this analysis, so that 144 kton·years of data, including 78 kton·years of additional fiducial volume data, has been newly analyzed. No candidates have been found for p→e+π0 and one candidate remains for p→μ+π0 in the conventional 22.5 kton fiducial volume and it is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino background prediction. We set lower limits on the partial lifetime for each of these modes: τ/B(p→e+π0)>2.4×1034 years and τ/B(p→μ+π0)>1.6×1034 years at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Background Cepharanthine (CEP), a compound extracted from the vine Stephania cephalantha, is commonly prescribed to treat alopecia areata; however, the scientific evidence for its efficacy is limited. Aim To investigate the effect of CEP and its structural analogues on human hair growth in vitro. Methods The effects of CEP and three of its structural analogues on the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) and human outer root sheath cells (hORSCs) were investigated. Their effects on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression were also assessed by real-time PCR. Activation of pathways leading to VEGF expression, such as intracellular Ca2+ mobilization and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) expression, was also characterized. Results CEP and two of its structural analogues significantly stimulated the growth of hDPCs but not hORSCs. Moreover, CEP and all three structural analogues significantly induced the expression of VEGF in hDPCs. CEP increased the intracellular Ca2+ concentration in hDPCs. CEP also increased the expression of HIF-1α and HIF-2α and induced the expression of HIF-responsive genes in hDPCs, even under normoxia. Conclusions These results suggest that CEP and its structural analogues have the potential to restore hair growth by promoting the proliferation of hDPCs and increasing their expression of VEGF.

Abstract

Erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF) was carried out in nineteen dogs naturally infected by Leptospira interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae/copenhagi. A decreased EOF was observed, suggesting a modification of erythrocyte components secondary to disturbances that occur during canine leptospirosis, such as renal damage and hepatic disease.A fragilidade osmótica eritrocitária foi estudada em dezenove cães infectados naturalmente pela Leptospira interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae/copenhagi. Observou-se uma redução da fragilidade osmótica eritrocitária, sem a presença de anemia, possivelmente relacionada aos distúrbios hepato-renais que ocorrem nesta patologia.

Abstract

Summary A 21-year-old neutered female domestic shorthaired cat was presented with a history of inappetence, vomiting and haematuria. The cat was humanely destroyed at the owner's request and a necropsy examination was performed. A 0.8 × 0.5 × 0.5 cm mass was located in the left lobe of the pancreas. The mass was gelatinous in nature and the external and cut surfaces were pale yellow in colour. Microscopically, the mass was non-capsulated and comprised an accumulation of extracellular stromal mucin containing suspended neoplastic columnar epithelial cells forming tubular structures. Immunohistochemically, these cells diffusely expressed cytokeratin (CK) AE1/AE3, CK7 and carcinoembryonic antigen and were partially positive for CK19 and trypsin, but negative for vimentin. The tumour was diagnosed as a colloid carcinoma. The clinical presentation in this case was caused by chronic renal failure complicated by secondary renal hyperparathyroidism and associated metastatic calcinosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of colloid carcinoma arising from the pancreas in a cat.

Abstract

For electron-doped cuprates, the strong suppression of antiferromagnetic spin correlation by efficient reduction annealing by the ``protect-annealing'' method leads to superconductivity not only with lower Ce concentrations but also with higher transition temperatures. To reveal the nature of this superconducting state, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of protect-annealed electron-doped superconductors ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{1.3\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{La}}_{0.7}{\mathrm{Ce}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ and directly investigated the superconducting gap. The gap was found to be consistent with $d$-wave symmetry, suggesting that strong electron correlation persists and hence antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations remain a candidate that mediates Copper pairing in the protect-annealed electron-doped cuprates.

Abstract

Natural gadolinium is widely used for its excellent thermal neutron capture cross section, because of its two major isotopes: $^{\rm 155}$Gd and $^{\rm 157}$Gd. We measured the $\gamma$-ray spectra produced from the thermal neutron capture on targets comprising a natural gadolinium film and enriched $^{\rm 155}$Gd (in Gd$_{2}$O$_{3}$ powder) in the energy range from 0.11 MeV to 8.0 MeV, using the ANNRI germanium spectrometer at MLF, J-PARC. The freshly analysed data of the $^{\rm 155}$Gd(n, $\gamma$) reaction are used to improve our previously developed model (ANNRI-Gd model) for the $^{\rm 157}$Gd(n, $\gamma$) reaction, and its performance confirmed with the independent data from the $^{\rm nat}$Gd(n, $\gamma$) reaction. Abstract

In order to investigate the electronic properties of the semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}\mathrm{G}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}\mathrm{T}{\mathrm{e}}_{6}$ (CGT), where ferromagnetic layers are bonded through van der Waals forces, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density-functional theory $(\mathrm{DFT}+U)$ calculations. The valence-band maximum at the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point is located $\ensuremath{\sim}0.2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ below the Fermi level, consistent with the semiconducting property of CGT. Comparison of the experimental density of states with the DFT calculation has suggested that Coulomb interaction between the Cr $3d$ electrons ${U}_{\mathrm{eff}}\ensuremath{\sim}1.1\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. The $\mathrm{DFT}+U$ calculation indicates that magnetic coupling between Cr atoms within the layer is ferromagnetic if Coulomb ${U}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is smaller than 3.0 eV and that the interlayer coupling is ferromagnetic below ${U}_{\mathrm{eff}}\ensuremath{\sim}1.0\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. We therefore conclude that, for ${U}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ deduced by the experiment, the intralayer Cr-Cr coupling is ferromagnetic and the interlayer coupling is near the boundary between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, which means experimentally deduced ${U}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ is consistent with the theoretical ferromagnetic condition.

Abstract

A reliable method, based on the double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA), was developed for the extraction of viruses from soil and optimized for the detection of Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) in soil taken from green pepper (Capsicum annuum) fields. When added to phosphate buffer, Tween 20 increases extraction efficiency and skim milk increases the specificity for PMMoV. Samples positive by DAS-ELISA were verified by inhibition testing using specific anti-PMMoV antibody, immuno-electron microscopy, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and inoculation tests on assay plants. Our system for detecting PMMoV in soil was successfully tested on samples from 22 infected and uninfected fields in Japan. When used before seedlings are planted, this method allows for the prediction of possible damage to cultivated plants by soil-borne PMMoV.

Abstract

Neutral current (NC) interactions of atmospheric neutrinos on oxygen form one of the major backgrounds in the search for supernova relic neutrinos with water-based Cherenkov detectors. The NC channel is dominated by neutrino quasi-elastic (NCQE) scattering off nucleons inside $^{16}$O nuclei. In this paper we report the first measurement of NCQE cross section using atmospheric neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande (SK). The measurement used 2,778 live days of SK-IV data with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water. Within the visible energy window of 7.5-29.5 MeV, we observed $117$ events compared to the expected $71.9$ NCQE signal and $53.1$ background events. Weighted by the atmospheric neutrino spectrum from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, the flux averaged NCQE cross section is measured to be $(1.01\pm0.17(\text{stat.})^{+0.78}_{-0.30}(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-38}$ cm$^2$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PRD

Abstract

International audience; We have measured the |$\gamma$|-ray energy spectrum from the thermal neutron capture, |${}^{157}$|Gd|$(n,\gamma)$|⁠, on an enriched |$^{157}$|Gd target (Gd|$_{2}$|O|$_{3}$|⁠) in the energy range from 0.11 MeV up to about 8 MeV. The target was placed inside the germanium spectrometer of the ANNRI detector at J-PARC and exposed to a neutron beam from the Japan Spallation Neutron Source (JSNS). Radioactive sources (⁠|$^{60}$|Co, |$^{137}$|Cs, and |$^{152}$|Eu) and the |$^{35}$|Cl(⁠|$n$|⁠,|$\gamma$|⁠) reaction were used to determine the spectrometer‘s detection efficiency for |$\gamma$| rays at energies from 0.3 to 8.5 MeV. Using a Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation of the detector and based on our data, we have developed a model to describe the |$\gamma$|-ray spectrum from the thermal |${}^{157}$|Gd(⁠|$n$|⁠,|$\gamma$|⁠) reaction. While we include the strength information of 15 prominent peaks above 5 MeV and associated peaks below 1.6 MeV from our data directly into the model, we rely on the theoretical inputs of nuclear level density and the photon strength function of |${}^{158}$|Gd to describe the continuum |$\gamma$|-ray spectrum from the |${}^{157}$|Gd(⁠|$n$|⁠,|$\gamma$|⁠) reaction. Our model combines these two components. The results of the comparison between the observed |$\gamma$|-ray spectra from the reaction and the model are reported in detail.

Abstract

The following review covers the primary literature concerning marine natural products isolated for the first time from organisms collected around the islands of Hawaii published in the 51-year period 1964 to July 2015. The review is divided into seven main sections based on major taxonomic groupings; algae, sponges, mollusks, miscellaneous invertebrates, cyanobacteria, bacteria, and fungi. The aim of the review is to discuss the compounds and information concerning their original biological activity and other potentially interesting properties. The majority of the 320 structures of isolated compounds are not shown directly in the review but are contained in the Supporting Information section in 22 figures, Figs. 1 S-22 S. The Supporting Information section also contains Table 1 S that has information relating to the taxonomic identification of the source organism of each compound, collection location of the source organism, a trivial or semi-systematic name for each compound, as well as its general structural class. The authors hope that this review will be the spawning ground for other reviews and the basis for a great deal more research into the marine life found in Hawaiian waters.

Abstract

Bulk crystals of electron-doped cuprates with a ${T}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-type structure require both Ce substitutions and reduction annealing for the emergence of superconductivity while reduction annealing alone can induce superconductivity in thin films of ${T}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-type cuprates. In order to reveal the low-energy electronic states which are responsible for the superconductivity, we have conducted angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on thin films of the superconducting Ce-free ${T}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-type cuprate ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$. The results indicate that the overall band structure and the Fermi surface area of the superconducting ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{4}$ are similar to those of superconducting Ce-doped bulk single crystals, highlighting the importance of the actual electron concentration rather than the Ce concentration when discussing the physical properties of ${T}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-type cuprates.

Abstract

Summary Antioxidant activity of symbiotic organisms known as lichens is an intriguing field of research because of its strong contribution to their ability to withstand extremes of physical and biological stress (e.g. desiccation, temperature, UV radiation and microbial infection). We present a comparative study on the antioxidant activities of 76 Icelandic and 41 Hawaiian lichen samples assessed employing the DPPH- and FRAP-based antioxidant assays. Utilizing this unprecedented sample size, we show that while highest individual sample activity is present in the Icelandic dataset, the overall antioxidant activity is higher for lichens found in Hawaii. Furthermore, we report that lichens from the genus Peltigera that have been described as strong antioxidant producers in studies on Chinese, Russian and Turkish lichens also show high antioxidant activities in both Icelandic and Hawaiian lichen samples. Finally, we show that opportunistic sampling of lichens in both Iceland and Hawaii will yield high numbers of lichen species that exclusively include green algae as photobiont.

Abstract

We have measured the discrete $\gamma$ rays from thermal neutron capture on enriched gadolinium targets ($^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd) using the ANNRI Germanium Spectrometer at JPARC. The photo-peak efficiencies were calibrated from 0.2 to 9 MeV using $\gamma$ rays from the standard radioactive sources ($^{60}$Co, $^{152}$Eu) and prompt $\gamma$ rays from $^{35}$Cl$(n,\gamma)$ reaction. We have calculated the relative intensities of discrete $\gamma$ rays from $^{157}$Gd$(n,\gamma)$ reaction. We found that our data are in fair agreement with the values published by NNDC (CapGam). We present the relative intensities of discrete $\gamma$ rays from $^{155}$Gd$(n,\gamma)$ reaction measured for the first time.

Abstract

Background and aims The toll-like receptors (TLRs) are critical participants in vertebrate innate immune recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Diverse ligands act as “danger signals” detected by this component of the innate immune system. TLR7 and 8 are located in the endosomes of specific immune subpopulations, and are activated by single-stranded RNA from viruses or by autologous RNA fragments bound to immune complexes, inducing the generation of cytokines such as interferons (specifically IFN-alpha) and IL-6. Strong genetic evidence supports variants in TLR7 as contributors to development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods In vitro and in vivo assays were used to guide development of potent and specific small molecule inhibitors. Results We describe novel and selective small molecule non-oligonucleotide TLR7/8 antagonists for the treatment of SLE. They exhibit potent activity in vitro in TLR-specific reporter systems (IC50 of ˜100 nM) and in primary human blood cells (IC50 of 50–500 nM across various ligands and cytokine readouts), suppressing TLR7 and TLR8 but with no activity against TLR9 or other TLRs tested. Exploration of mechanism of action shows direct interaction of the lead compound with the external domain of TLR8. The compounds are orally available and active in a mouse model of R848 challenge. When tested in long-term dosing in pristane-induced or spontaneous NZB/W disease the compounds slow the advance of autoantibody titers and efficiently suppress development of nephritis and associated proteinuria. Conclusions We have identified novel small molecule antagonists of human TLR7 and TLR8 with beneficial activity in mouse models of systemic lupus.

Abstract

A fast rotating neutron star, or a pulsar, left behind by a core collapse supernova produces a Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) as a result of interactions between a relativistic outflow from the neutron star and the surrounding material. The pulsars and their nebulae offer a unique opportunity for studying the physics of relativistic plasma. Here we report on observations of gamma-ray emission from PWN N 157B in the Large Magellanic Cloud, powered by the most powerful pulsar known to date. The detected emission component allows two competing interpretations: (i) either it can be produced by particles forming a Maxwellian-type distribution through the inverse Compton scattering; or (ii) as synchrotron emission of particles accelerated by some extremely efficient process. The latter possibility is supported by the possible variability of the GeV emission. Detailed observations in the hard X-rays with NuSTAR or the GeV band with large dish Cherenkov detectors may shed light on the nature of this component.

We report here the 6.0-Mb draft genome assembly of Pseudoalteromonas luteoviolacea strain IPB1 that was isolated from the Hawaiian marine sponge Iotrochota protea . Genome mining complemented with bioassay studies will elucidate secondary metabolite biosynthetic pathways and will help explain the ecological interaction between host sponge and microorganism.
