1. A tropospheric pathway of the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) impact on the boreal winter polar vortex

Abstract: The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) is quasi-periodic oscillation of the tropical zonal wind in the stratosphere. When the tropical lower stratospheric wind is easterly (westerly), the winter Northern Hemisphere (NH) stratospheric polar vortex tends to be weak (strong). This relation is known as the Holton–Tan relationship. Several mechanisms for this relationship have been proposed, especially linking the tropics with high latitudes through stratospheric pathway. Although QBO impacts on the troposphere have been extensively discussed, a tropospheric pathway of the Holton–Tan relationship has not been explored previously. Here, we propose a tropospheric pathway of the QBO impact, which may partly account for the Holton–Tan relationship in early winter, especially in the November–December period. The study is based on analyses of observational data and results from a simple linear model and atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) simulations. The mechanism is summarized as follows: the easterly phase of the QBO is accompanied with colder temperature in the tropical tropopause layer, which enhances convective activity over the tropical western Pacific and suppresses it over the Indian Ocean, thus enhancing the Walker circulation. This convection anomaly generates a Rossby wave train, propagating into the midlatitude troposphere, which constructively interferences with the climatological stationary waves, especially in wavenumber 1, resulting in enhanced upward propagation of the planetary wave and a weakened polar vortex.

2. Thrust calculation of electric solar wind sail by particle-in-cell simulation

Abstract: In this study, thrust characteristics of an electric solar wind sail were numerically evaluated using full three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The thrust obtained from the PIC simulation was lower than the thrust estimations obtained in previous studies. The PIC simulation indicated that ambient electrons strongly shield the electrostatic potential of the tether of the sail, and the strong shield effect causes a greater thrust reduction than has been obtained in previous studies. Additionally, previous expressions of the thrust estimation were modified by using the shielded potential structure derived from the present simulation results. The modified thrust estimation agreed very well with the thrust obtained from the PIC simulation.

4. Clinical findings of triglyceride deposit cardiomyovasculopathy

Abstract: Background Triglyceride (TG) deposit cardiomyovasculopathy (TGCV) is a novel cardiovascular disorder and was recently encoded as an orphan disease in Europe (ORPHA code: 565612). Defective intracellular lipolysis results in TG accumulation in the myocardium and coronary arteries in TGCV. The myocardial washout rate (WR) of iodine-123-β-methyl-p-iodophenylpentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) is an essential indicator to evaluate myocardial lipolysis in vivo, and decreased WR ( Purpose To clarify clinical findings of TGCV including comorbid conditions and laboratory findings. Methods We enrolled 234 patients who underwent BMIPP scintigraphy between September 2015 and July 2019. The distributions of TGCV in each comorbidity, cardiac functions and laboratory findings were investigated. Results In total, 104 patients were diagnosed with definitive TGCV. The BMIPP WR of TGCV patients was −1.37±10.6%. TGCV patients had various comorbid conditions, including coronary artery disease (75%), diabetes mellitus (56%), and heart failure (21%). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of TGCV patients was significantly lower than that of non-TGCV patients (38.1±18.0% vs. 43.6±18.9%, p-value=0.026). Moreover, among those who did not take lipid-lowering drugs, there was no difference in the serum TG level between TGCV and non-TGCV patients (TGCV: n=44, 127±84.6 mg/dL, non-TGCV: n=66, 133±70.7 mg/dL, p-value=0.73). Conclusions TGCV patients showed multiple coexistence of coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, or heart failure with lower LVEF. Serum TG level was not significantly different between TGCV and non-TGCV patients. Serum TG did not affect the intracellular TG accumulation in TGCV patients directly, and this result was consistent with the pathophysiological hypothesis that the TG accumulation in the myocardial cytoplasm is due to intracellular lipase dysfunction. 6. COVID-19 transmission in dental and oral/maxillofacial surgical practice during pandemic: questionnaire survey in 51 university hospitals in Japan

Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become a major public health problem. Dental procedures that generate aerosols are considered to impose a high risk of infection; therefore, dental professionals, such as dentists and dental hygienists, may be at high risk of viral transmission. However, few studies have reported COVID-19 clusters in dental care settings.To investigate whether dental and oral/maxillofacial procedures are associated with the occurrence of COVID-19 clusters and measures taken to prevent nosocomial infection in dental clinics.An online questionnaire survey on clinical activities (administrative control), infection control measures (environmental/engineering control, personal protective equipment, etc.), and confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases among patients and clinical staff was administered to the faculties of the dental and oral/maxillofacial surgical departments of university hospitals.Fifty-one faculty members completed the questionnaire. All members were engaged in the treatment of dental and oral surgical outpatients and actively implemented standard precautions. Fourteen faculty members treated patients with COVID-19, but no infections transmitted from the patients to the medical staff were observed. In seven facilities, patients were found to have the infection after treatment (medical staff came in close contact), but there was no transmission from patients to medical staff. Four facilities had medical staff with infections, but none of them exhibited disease transmission from staff to patients.COVID-19 clusters are unlikely to occur in dental and oral surgical care settings if appropriate protective measures are implemented.

Abstract: For the first time, we have revealed the spatial structure of a detached plasma with electron–ion recombination (EIR) and molecular-activated recombination (MAR) in response to changes in ion temperature (Ti) and gas pressure. This was achieved using high-density sheet plasma generated by a linear divertor simulator (TPDsheet-ICR). The parallel-plate electrodes were positioned above and below the sheet plasma (∼1019 m−3). We varied the Ti from 3 to 7 eV using ion cyclotron resonance heating and investigated the parameters of the detached plasma near the target in the divergent field region. Plasma emission intensities at Balmer series (Hα and Hγ) and Fulcher band wavelengths (610 ± 10 nm) were measured with a high-speed camera equipped with an Arbaa prism. Additionally, a Langmuir probe measured the electron density and temperature of the plasma. Our results show that as the Ti increases, EIR generated near the plasma periphery disappears, while MAR gradually forms near the plasma center during the transition from detached to attached plasma. This transition occurs because the increase in Ti in the detached plasma transfers energy from ions to electrons, raising the high-energy component of the electrons, resulting in EIR disappearance and the onset of MAR.

9. Evaluation of local erosion and deposition on the W-monoblock of JA-DEMO divertor

Abstract: We developed and performed a 3D Monte-Carlo simulation on local erosion and deposition in outer divertor target of JA-DEMO. The local erosion and deposition were evaluated considering the divertor plasma parameters and the roof shape of W-monoblocks. First, for local erosion simulation, the trajectories of D ions and impurity (He and Ar) ions were traced before irradiating the monoblock surface. The physical sputtering was calculated by these ions irradiation, considering their charge states, incident-energies and -angles. The highest sputtering flux was produced by multiply-charged Ar ions (Ar3+–Ar5+). The sputtering flux strongly depended on the poloidal positions along the divertor target. Although almost no erosion (sputtering) was obtained in low-temperature zone (∼1 eV), the erosion occurred in mid- (∼10 eV) and high-temperature (>10 eV) zone. Second, for local deposition simulation, the trajectories of W atoms emitted from the monoblock surface were traced. After transport (including ionization and recombination) in the plasma, W atoms and ions were deposited on the monoblock surface. The deposition occurred even on the area where plasmas did not irradiate (shadow). This was due to perpendicular diffusion to magnetic field lines, gyro-orbit effects for W ions and straight-line motion for neutral W atoms. The poloidal distribution of the deposition fluxes was similar to that of the sputtering fluxes. In low-temperature zone, no deposition flux occurred due to very low sputtering flux. The deposition flux in mid-temperature zone increased significantly and that in high-temperature zone remained high.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments about 1 km3 of deep, glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. It uses 5160 photomultipliers to detect Cherenkov light emitted by charged relativistic particles. An unexpected light propagation effect observed by the experiment is an anisotropic attenuation, which is aligned with the local flow direction of the ice. We examine birefringent light propagation through the polycrystalline ice microstructure as a possible explanation for this effect. The predictions of a first-principles model developed for this purpose, in particular curved light trajectories resulting from asymmetric diffusion, provide a qualitatively good match to the main features of the data. This in turn allows us to deduce ice crystal properties. Since the wavelength of the detected light is short compared to the crystal size, these crystal properties include not only the crystal orientation fabric, but also the average crystal size and shape, as a function of depth. By adding small empirical corrections to this first-principles model, a quantitatively accurate description of the optical properties of the IceCube glacial ice is obtained. In this paper, we present the experimental signature of ice optical anisotropy observed in IceCube light-emitting diode (LED) calibration data, the theory and parameterization of the birefringence effect, the fitting procedures of these parameterizations to experimental data, and the inferred crystal properties.

Abstract: Abstract Atmospheric muon neutrinos are produced by meson decays in cosmic-ray-induced air showers. The flux depends on meteorological quantities such as the air temperature, which affects the density of air. Competition between decay and re-interaction of those mesons in the first particle production generations gives rise to a higher neutrino flux when the air density in the stratosphere is lower, corresponding to a higher temperature. A measurement of a temperature dependence of the atmospheric $$\nu _{\mu }$$ ν μ flux provides a novel method for constraining hadronic interaction models of air showers. It is particularly sensitive to the production of kaons. Studying this temperature dependence for the first time requires a large sample of high-energy neutrinos as well as a detailed understanding of atmospheric properties. We report the significant ( $$> 10 \; \sigma $$ > 10 σ ) observation of a correlation between the rate of more than 260,000 neutrinos, detected by IceCube between 2012 and 2018, and atmospheric temperatures of the stratosphere, measured by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard NASA’s AQUA satellite. For the observed 10 $$\%$$ % seasonal change of effective atmospheric temperature we measure a 3.5(3) $$\%$$ % change in the muon neutrino flux. This observed correlation deviates by about 2-3 standard deviations from the expected correlation of 4.3 $$\%$$ % as obtained from theoretical predictions under the assumption of various hadronic interaction models.

Abstract: Abstract High-energy tau neutrinos are rarely produced in atmospheric cosmic-ray showers or at cosmic particle accelerators, but are expected to emerge during neutrino propagation over cosmic distances due to flavor mixing. When high energy tau neutrinos interact inside the IceCube detector, two spatially separated energy depositions may be resolved, the first from the charged current interaction and the second from the tau lepton decay. We report a novel analysis of 7.5 years of IceCube data that identifies two candidate tau neutrinos among the 60 “High-Energy Starting Events” (HESE) collected during that period. The HESE sample offers high purity, all-sky sensitivity, and distinct observational signatures for each neutrino flavor, enabling a new measurement of the flavor composition. The measured astrophysical neutrino flavor composition is consistent with expectations, and an astrophysical tau neutrino flux is indicated at 2.8 $$\sigma $$ σ significance.

Abstract: Abstract The reconstruction of event-level information, such as the direction or energy of a neutrino interacting in IceCube DeepCore, is a crucial ingredient to many physics analyses. Algorithms to extract this high level information from the detector’s raw data have been successfully developed and used for high energy events. In this work, we address unique challenges associated with the reconstruction of lower energy events in the range of a few to hundreds of GeV and present two separate, state-of-the-art algorithms. One algorithm focuses on the fast directional reconstruction of events based on unscattered light. The second algorithm is a likelihood-based multipurpose reconstruction offering superior resolutions, at the expense of larger computational cost.

19. Ion-induced luminescence and damage process of LiTaO3

Abstract: In order to examine the basic characteristics of light emission and damage accumulation in lithium tantalate (LiTaO3), ion-induced luminescence was measured. A broad peak centered at about 540 nm was observed under ion bombardment. The ion-induced luminescence was essentially the same as the luminescence under UV photon irradiation. The initial intensity of the luminescence was proportional to the projected range of the incident ions and independent of the electronic energy loss. The shape of the spectra was independent of the species, energy, and fluence of incident ions. The luminescence monotonically decreased with an increase in ion fluence. Assuming first-order kinetics in the annihilation and recovery process of the luminescent centers, the annihilation rate was proportional to the nuclear energy stopping power. It was considered that the luminescent center was mainly damaged by nuclear collisions, and the recovery of the damaged luminescent center was caused by local heating by the ion beam.

Abstract: The paper presents a brief overview of current research activities on functional ceramic materials for insulating components, tritium breeder and optical sensing systems, mainly carried out at Institute for Materials Research (IMR), Tohoku University. Topics include recent experimental results related to the electrical degradation and optical changes in typical oxide ceramics (e.g. Al2O3 and SiO2) concerning radiolytic effects. Hydrogen effects on the electrical conductivity in the Perovskite-type oxide ceramics and the interaction between hydrogen and irradiation induced defects in ternary Li oxides used as breeder materials, were dynamically observed under the irradiation environment. Further attention is focused on several challenging qualifications required for an advanced sensing system using optical characteristics (e.g., thermoluminescence in SiO2 core fiber, neutron-induced long lasting emission from oxides doped with rare-earth elements, and gasochromic coloration phenomenon of WO3).

21. Damage and recovery processes for the luminescence of irradiated PEN films

Abstract: The degradation and recovery of the optical emission characteristics of polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) films were studied during irradiation with MeV protons and UV photons. The photo-stimulated luminescence (PL) consisting of two major peaks decreased with the incident energy fluence, particularly for ion irradiation. At the beginning of irradiation, the rate of reduction of the PL intensity in the UV-irradiated film was comparable to that for ion irradiation, but the residual PL intensity in the UV-irradiated film was considerably larger at higher fluences. In addition, no change in the PL characteristics of the UV-irradiated film was observed after stopping the UV irradiation, indicating that the damage caused by the UV photons was permanent. However, the PL intensity from the ion irradiated film increased immediately when the film was exposed to air. The recovery of the luminescence centers in the ion-irradiated PEN film is attributed to ion-induced surface modification, which plays a role in the enhancement of the dissociation of water molecules and the diffusion process for constituent atoms.

22. Recent progress of plasma exhaust concepts and divertor designs for tokamak DEMO reactors

Abstract: The power exhaust concept and an appropriate divertor design are common critical issues for tokamak DEMO design activities which have been carried out in Europe, Japan, China, Korea and the USA. Conventional divertor concepts and power exhaust studies for recent DEMO designs (Pfusion = 1 – 2 GW, Rp = 7 – 9 m) are reviewed from the viewpoints of the plasma physics issues and the divertor engineering design. Radiative cooling is a common approach for the power fusion scenario. Requirements on the main plasma radiation fraction (fradmain = Pradmain/Pheat) and the plasma performance constrain the divertor design concept. Different challenges contribute to optimizing the future DEMO designs: for example, (i) increasing the main plasma radiation fraction for ITER-level Psep/Rp designs and simplifying the divertor geometry, and (ii) extending ITER divertor geometry with increasing divertor radiation (Praddiv) for larger Psep/Rp ≥ 25MWm−1 designs. Power exhaust simulations with large Psep = 150 – 300 MW have been performed using integrated divertor codes considering an ITER-based divertor geometry with longer leg length (1.6 – 1.7 m), as in a common baseline design. Geometry effects (ITER like geometry or more open one without baffle) on the plasma detachment profile and the required divertor radiation fraction (fraddiv = Praddiv/Psep) were key aspects of these studies. All simulations showed that the divertor plasma detachment were extended widely across the target plate with a reduction in the peak heat load of qtarget ≤ 10 MWm−2 for the large fraddiv = 0.7 – 0.8, while the peak qtarget location and value were noticeably different in the partially detached divertor. Simulation results also demonstrated that radial diffusion coefficients of the heat and particle fluxes were critical parameters for DEMO divertor design, and that effects of plasma drifts on outboard-enhanced asymmetry of the heat flux, suggested the need for longer divertor leg to ensure the existence of a detached divertor operation with qtarget ≤ 10 MWm−2.Integrated design of the water cooled divertor target, cassette body (CB) and cooling pipe routing has been developed for each DEMO concept, based on the ITER-like tungsten monoblock (W-MB) with Cu-alloy cooling pipes. Engineering design adequate under higher neutron irradiation condition was required. Therefore, inlet coolant temperature (Tcool) was increased. In current designs, it still shows a large potential variation between 70 °C and 200 °C. The influence of thermal softening on the Cu-alloy (CuCrZr) pipe was fostered near the strike-point when the high qtarget of ∼10 MWm−2 was studied. Improved technologies for high heat flux components based on the ITER W-MB unit have been developed for EU-DEMO. Different coolant conditions (low- and high-Tcool) were provided for Cu-alloy and reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steel heat sink units, respectively. The high-Tcool coolant was also considered for the CB and supporting structures. Appropriate conditions for the high-Tcool coolant, i.e. 180 °C/ 5 MPa (EU-DEMO) and 290 °C/ 15 MPa (JA-DEMO, CFETR and K-DEMO), will be determined in the future optimizations of the divertor and DEMO design.

Abstract: Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are prime candidate sources of the high-energy, astrophysical neutrinos detected by IceCube. This is demonstrated by the real-time multimessenger detection of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the recent evidence of neutrino emission from NGC 1068 from a separate time-averaged study. However, the production mechanism of the astrophysical neutrinos in AGN is not well established, which can be resolved via correlation studies with photon observations. For neutrinos produced due to photohadronic interactions in AGN, in addition to a correlation of neutrinos with high-energy photons, there would also be a correlation of neutrinos with photons emitted at radio wavelengths. In this work, we perform an in-depth stacking study of the correlation between 15 GHz radio observations of AGN reported in the MOJAVE XV catalog, and 10 yr of neutrino data from IceCube. We also use a time-dependent approach, which improves the statistical power of the stacking analysis. No significant correlation was found for both analyses, and upper limits are reported. When compared to the IceCube diffuse flux, at 100 TeV and for a spectral index of 2.5, the upper limits derived are ∼3% and ∼9% for the time-averaged and time-dependent cases, respectively.

Abstract: Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

Abstract: Neutrino flares in the sky are searched for in data collected by IceCube between 2011 and 2021 May. This data set contains cascade-like events originating from charged-current electron neutrino and tau neutrino interactions and all-flavor neutral-current interactions. IceCube’s previous all-sky searches for neutrino flares used data sets consisting of track-like events originating from charged-current muon neutrino interactions. The cascade data set is statistically independent of the track data sets, and while inferior in angular resolution, the low-background nature makes it competitive and complementary to previous searches. No statistically significant flare of neutrino emission was observed in an all-sky scan. Upper limits are calculated on neutrino flares of varying duration from 1 hr to 100 days. Furthermore, constraints on the contribution of these flares to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux are presented, showing that multiple unresolved transient sources may contribute to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for 10–1000 GeV neutrinos from 2268 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) over 8 yr of IceCube-DeepCore data. This work probes burst physics below the photosphere where electromagnetic radiation cannot escape. Neutrinos of tens of giga electronvolts are predicted in sub-photospheric collision of free-streaming neutrons with bulk-jet protons. In a first analysis, we searched for the most significant neutrino-GRB coincidence using six overlapping time windows centered on the prompt phase of each GRB. In a second analysis, we conducted a search for a group of GRBs, each individually too weak to be detectable, but potentially significant when combined. No evidence of neutrino emission is found for either analysis. The most significant neutrino coincidence is for Fermi-GBM GRB bn 140807500, with a p -value of 0.097 corrected for all trials. The binomial test used to search for a group of GRBs had a p -value of 0.65 after all trial corrections. The binomial test found a group consisting only of GRB bn 140807500 and no additional GRBs. The neutrino limits of this work complement those obtained by IceCube at tera electronvolt to peta electronvolt energies. We compare our findings for the large set of GRBs as well as GRB 221009A to the sub-photospheric neutron-proton collision model and find that GRB 221009A provides the most constraining limit on baryon loading. For a jet Lorentz factor of 300 (800), the baryon loading on GRB 221009A is lower than 3.85 (2.13) at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract: IceCube alert events are neutrinos with a moderate-to-high probability of having astrophysical origin. In this study, we analyze 11 yr of IceCube data and investigate 122 alert events and a selection of high-energy tracks detected between 2009 and the end of 2021. This high-energy event selection (alert events + high-energy tracks) has an average probability of ≥0.5 of being of astrophysical origin. We search for additional continuous and transient neutrino emission within the high-energy events’ error regions. We find no evidence for significant continuous neutrino emission from any of the alert event directions. The only locally significant neutrino emission is the transient emission associated with the blazar TXS 0506+056, with a local significance of 3 σ , which confirms previous IceCube studies. When correcting for 122 test positions, the global p -value is 0.156 and compatible with the background hypothesis. We constrain the total continuous flux emitted from all 122 test positions at 100 TeV to be below 1.2 × 10 ^−15 (TeV cm ^2 s) ^−1 at 90% confidence assuming an E ^−2 spectrum. This corresponds to 4.5% of IceCube’s astrophysical diffuse flux. Overall, we find no indication that alert events in general are linked to lower-energetic continuous or transient neutrino emission.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has been continuously taking data to search for ${ \mathcal O }(0.5\mbox{--}10)$ s long neutrino bursts since 2007. Even if a Galactic core-collapse supernova is optically obscured or collapses to a black hole instead of exploding, it will be detectable via the ${ \mathcal O }(10)$ MeV neutrino burst emitted during the collapse. We discuss a search for such events covering the time between 2008 April 17 and 2019 December 31. Considering the average data taking and analysis uptime of 91.7% after all selection cuts, this is equivalent to 10.735 yr of continuous data taking. In order to test the most conservative neutrino production scenario, the selection cuts were optimized for a model based on an 8.8 solar mass progenitor collapsing to an O–Ne–Mg core. Conservative assumptions on the effects of neutrino oscillations in the exploding star were made. The final selection cut was set to ensure that the probability to detect such a supernova within the Milky Way exceeds 99%. No such neutrino burst was found in the data after performing a blind analysis. Hence, a 90% C.L. upper limit on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to distances of ≈25 kpc was determined to be 0.23 yr ^−1 . For the more distant Magellanic Clouds, only high neutrino luminosity supernovae will be detectable by IceCube, unless external information on the burst time is available. We determined a model-independent limit by parameterizing the dependence on the neutrino luminosity and the energy spectrum.

Abstract: Mutations in the p53 gene are associated with a wide variety of human malignancies. Point mutation in one allele and loss of the remaining one generally lead to inactivation of p53 protein. A high frequency of allelic losses corresponding to the 17p13.3 region that contained the p53 gene sequence was also noted in human endometrial carcinoma. Thus, in order to confirm involvement of the p53 gene in endometrial carcinogenesis, we searched for nucleotide sequence change in this gene in 42 endometrial carcinomas that had been subjected to previous LOH analyses. Using the polymerase-chain-reaction-single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) method, we detected p53 gene mutations in 4 specimens. Two adenocarcinomas with allelic loss on 17p contained a mutant p53 gene in the allele that was retained. One specimen with a p53 gene mutation contained a 17q deletion but was uninformative for LOH on 17p. p53 gene mutation was also noted in the remaining stage-I carcinoma, though the 17p deletion was not detected in the previous LOH examination. However, 5 specimens with the LOH on 17p retained the wild-type p53 gene. In the remaining 33 specimens, both alleles of p53 gene seemed to be normal. The mutations observed in 2 specimens (cases 10 and 24), involving C-to-T and T-to-G substitutions, were located in a highly conserved region. However, the mutations identified in the remaining 2 cases (29 and 35) were at regions positioned outside conserved stretches.

Abstract: In this paper we summarized, first the present status and history of the development of research in anti-aging and regenerative medicine in Japan, and secondly some of our research using DDS in the field of both medicine. The regenerative medicine has been developed in Japan by using the fund from the Government, particularly as the Millennium Project. While anti-aging medicine developed following the social interest on it in Japan and it was influenced by American Society (A4M). Next, we summarized our research on DDS for anti-aging and regenerative medicine. In most cases we used oily or solid nanoparticles as carriers of drug. Those particles have a property of both of targeting and slow release in the DDS technology. The two properties are important for anti-aging and regenerative medicine, since drugs have to be administered safely and for long time. We applied prostaglandin E1, granulocyte-colony stimulate factor (G-CSF), and retinoid into the systems.

Abstract: The present review will concentrate on a discussion of recent investigations that demonstrated whether the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin; 5-HT) and its metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), in the locus coeruleus are influenced by tryptophan alone or simultaneous administration of tryptophan and ethanol. The impetus for this line of investigation derives from a report that mice treated with tryptophol plus alcohol increased brain tryptophol level and became highly susceptible to convulsions. A deficiency in 5-HT synthesis and metabolism (turnover) has been implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, late luteal phase dysphoric syndrome, alcoholism, impulsive violence and aggression. Emphasis will be placed on demonstration of a rodent model in which the tryptophan administration induces the increased 5-HIAA level through the activation of serotonergic neuronal system. The use of in vivo microdialysis techniques clearly identifies, in this model, that acutely- or consecutively-treated tryptophan plus ethanol results in focal increases in extracellular levels of 5-HIAA within the locus coeruleus. This study provides evidence to indicate that the 5-HIAA level in the locus coeruleus after tryptophan alone or tryptophan plus ethanol is indicative of changes in the activity of serotonergic neurotransmission in locus coeruleus neurons and the participation of 5-HIAA as a general phenomenon in behavioral activation.

Abstract: The fixed biomass inside porous medium has two layers where biomass yield constants are different from each other when it is cultivated in the chemostat reactor. The biomass fixed inside porous medium is tested to see whether the operation type affected the structure of it. Two kinds of operation method of the reactor were used for the biofilm cultivation. One is the batch reactor. Another is the chemostat reactor. From the kinetic test, it is found that the biofilm fixed in the batch reactor does not have two layers that were observed in the biofilm from the chemostat reactor. Within the experimental conditions for type-1, the result of kinetic tests show homogeneous biofilm characteristics. It can be concluded that the reactor type (batch type or chemostat type) affects the structure of biomass fixed inside porous medium.

Abstract: The relationship between gastrointestinal conditions and halitosis is discussed. Few reports have suggested that gastrointestinal diseases may cause halitosis. H. pylori infection, which causes gastric ulcers, is considered as a possible cause for halitosis. Abstract: 症例は50歳男性.下血・腹痛を主訴に当院消化器科を受診,上部・下部消化管内視鏡検査,注腸造影検査で明らかな出血性病変は認めず,小腸造影で回腸に突出する腸管が描出され,重複腸管が疑われた.重複腸管からの出血と診断し,手術を施行した.術中所見では,回盲部より約45cm口側の回腸に7×65cmの球状型の重複腸管を認め,頚部で切除した.切除標本では頚部に潰瘍を認め,出血源と思われたが,組織学的に異所性胃粘膜は認めなかった.重複腸管は本邦では約400例(1949～2000)の報告例があるが,約65%が幼児期に発症しており,成人では少ない.出血例の多くは異所性胃粘膜を有しており,本症例のように異所性胃粘膜の存在しない重複腸管からの出血の報告例は極めて稀であり,若干の文献的考察を加えて報告した.

Abstract: Core-collapse supernovae are a promising potential high-energy neutrino source class. We test for correlation between seven years of IceCube neutrino data and a catalog containing more than 1000 core-collapse supernovae of types IIn and IIP and a sample of stripped-envelope supernovae. We search both for neutrino emission from individual supernovae as well as for combined emission from the whole supernova sample, through a stacking analysis. No significant spatial or temporal correlation of neutrinos with the cataloged supernovae was found. All scenarios were tested against the background expectation and together yield an overall p -value of 93%; therefore, they show consistency with the background only. The derived upper limits on the total energy emitted in neutrinos are 1.7 × 10 ^48 erg for stripped-envelope supernovae, 2.8 × 10 ^48 erg for type IIP, and 1.3 × 10 ^49 erg for type IIn SNe, the latter disfavoring models with optimistic assumptions for neutrino production in interacting supernovae. We conclude that stripped-envelope supernovae and supernovae of type IIn do not contribute more than 14.6% and 33.9%, respectively, to the diffuse neutrino flux in the energy range of about [ 10 ^3 –10 ^5 ] GeV, assuming that the neutrino energy spectrum follows a power-law with an index of −2.5. Under the same assumption, we can only constrain the contribution of type IIP SNe to no more than 59.9%. Thus, core-collapse supernovae of types IIn and stripped-envelope supernovae can both be ruled out as the dominant source of the diffuse neutrino flux under the given assumptions.

Abstract: Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerators (PeVatrons) are Galactic sources theorized to accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV in energy. The accelerated cosmic rays are expected to interact hadronically with nearby ambient gas or the interstellar medium, resulting in γ -rays and neutrinos. Recently, the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) identified 12 γ -ray sources with emissions above 100 TeV, making them candidates for PeVatrons. While at these high energies the Klein–Nishina effect exponentially suppresses leptonic emission from Galactic sources, evidence for neutrino emission would unequivocally confirm hadronic acceleration. Here, we present the results of a search for neutrinos from these γ -ray sources and stacking searches testing for excess neutrino emission from all 12 sources as well as their subcatalogs of supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae with 11 yr of track events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. No significant emissions were found. Based on the resulting limits, we place constraints on the fraction of γ -ray flux originating from the hadronic processes in the Crab Nebula and LHAASO J2226+6057.

Abstract: Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have long been considered a possible source of high-energy neutrinos. While no correlations have yet been detected between high-energy neutrinos and GRBs, the recent observation of GRB 221009A—the brightest GRB observed by Fermi-GBM to date and the first one to be observed above an energy of 10 TeV—provides a unique opportunity to test for hadronic emission. In this paper, we leverage the wide energy range of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory to search for neutrinos from GRB 221009A. We find no significant deviation from background expectation across event samples ranging from MeV to PeV energies, placing stringent upper limits on the neutrino emission from this source.

Abstract: This paper proposes miniaturized electromagnetic type power generators that compose of an air turbine by the MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) technology and a magnetic circuit by the multilayer ceramic technology. Small and high energy density power supplies have been required with the increase in power consumption of electronic equipment. However, conventional power supplies have been reaching the theoretical limit. Accordingly, miniaturized power generators to replace the secondary battery have been studied. In this paper, two types of MEMS air turbine generators are proposed. The generators are the single-phase type MEMS air turbine generator and three-phase type, respectively. The generation capability of the single phase magnetic circuit was preliminary evaluated by a rotating permanent magnet which was attached to a spindle machine. When the rotational speed was 380000 rpm and a load resistance was 1 ohm, the output power reached to 1.47 mVA. Combined with MEMS air turbine, the generator showed maximum rotational speed of 30,000rpm, and the output power was 1.74 micro VA at load resistance of 1 ohm. The magnetic circuit of three phase type was evaluated by the spindle machine. When the rotational speed was 380000 rpm and a load resistance of 1 ohm, the output power was 3.3 mVA. Also, maximum rotational speed of the rotor of the MEMS air turbine generator was 18,000rpm, and the output power was 1.41 micro VA.

Abstract: 横浜市民病院で治療した潰瘍性大腸炎680例中7例(1.0%)が死亡した.内訳は男性5例,女性2例,平均年齢は44.7歳,全例手術例で,死因は悪性疾患3例,手術後の合併症4例であった.悪性疾患は大腸癌2例,carcinoidl例であり,surveillanceを受けていない例で,平均26.7カ月で再発死亡した.重症例の死亡は4例で,死因はMOFであった.重症の手術死亡率(9.8%,4/41)はそれ以外の手術死亡率(0%,0/190)と比較して有意に高く,重症死亡例の総steroid投与量はそれ以外の195例の投与量と有意差はなかったが,手術前1カ月の投与量は有意に高かった.死亡例を減少させるには大腸癌を早期に発見するsurveillanceと重症例に対してsteroidを長期間大量に使用しないことが重要である.

Abstract: Objective: To report the results of prenatal triple marker screening on a population of Japanese pregnant women. Methods: From April 1994 through March 1999, a total of 32,925 native Japanese women with singleton pregnancies requested a triple marker-screening test. Multiples of the median values for 3 markers and individual risks for each patient were calculated following adjustment for the Japanese weight correction factor. The risk cut-off values used for Down syndrome (T21), open spina bifida (OSB) and trisomy 18 (T18) were 1:295, 1:290, and 1:100, respectively. Follow-up information was collected postpartum and statistically analyzed. Results: Detection rates (DR) of T21 for women less than 35 years, over 35 years and overall were 58, 94, and 83%, respectively. DR of T18 for women less than 35 years, over 35 years and overall were 75, 79, and 79%, respectively. DR of open neural tube defects (ONTD) was 100%. Conclusions: The first cumulative data of an intervention program and prospective follow-up studies in Japan have proven to be similar to other published reports. Individual risk values were calculated for each pregnancy for T21, T18 and ONTD. This screening program is more effective than age-dependent screening for detecting T21, T18 and ONTD pregnancies.

Abstract: A nationwide survey and recent information documented 57 patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) who had received dura mater grafts during the period between January 1979 and September 1999. At least 54 of these 57 patients received the same brand of dura mater graft from the same processor. Mean age at disease onset in the 57 patients with dural grafts was younger (51.9 years) than that in patients with sporadic CJD (63 years) (p0. 0001). Initial symptoms were cerebellar ataxia, disorientation, and visual or oculomotor disturbance.
