Abstract

Being installed as close as 5.5 mm to the beam axis, the Micro Vertex Detector (mvd) of the cbm experiment will be exposed to a sizable flow of heavy beam ions and nuclear fragments. The cmos Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor for the mvd, mimosis, must resist the related heavy ion impacts without permanent damage or frequent interrupt of operation as caused by single event effects (see). We motivate the requirements on the sensor and introduce our concept for protecting the device against sees. Moreover, we report the results of a related test campaign carried out with the first full size sensor prototype, mimosis-1, and different heavy ion beams at gsi.

Abstract

The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider will result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgro\ unds in the interaction region. Understanding and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experi\ ment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKE\ KB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also repor\ t on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions f\ rom synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds origina\ ting from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV elect\ ron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds for\ ward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector., Comment: 22 Pages, 33 figures

Abstract

This article reports the first operation of a double-sided CMOS pixelated ladder in a collider experiment, namely in the inner tracker volume of the Belle II experiment during the Phase 2 run of the SuperKEKB collider. Design and integration of the detector system in the experiment interaction region is first described. The two modules operated almost continuously during slightly more than four months, recording data to monitor the hit rate close to beams. Details of the off-line data analysis are provided and a method to estimate particle momentum from the 2 hits measured per crossing particle is proposed.

Abstract

International audience; Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 ( $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.7--4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials ( $\mu_B > 500$ MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation of state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2024, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract

A CMOS sensor chip for charged particle detection has been developed and submitted for fabrication in a 0.18 μm Quadruple-Well (N&P-Wells, Deep N&P-Wells) CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) process. Improvement of the radiation hardness, the power dissipation and the readout speed of the mainstream CMOS sensors is expected with the exploration of this process. In order to ensure better charge collection and neutron tolerance, wafers with high-resistivity epitaxial layer have been chosen. In this paper a digital CMOS sensor prototype developed in order to validate the key analog blocks (from sensing element to 1-bit digital conversion) of a binary Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) in this process will be presented. The digital sensor prototype comprises four different sub-arrays of 20 μm pitch 64 × 32 pixels, 128 column-level auto-zeroed discriminators, a sequencer and an output digital multiplexer. Laboratory tests results including the charge-to-voltage conversion factor, the charge collection efficiency, the temporal noise and the fixed-pattern noise are presented in details. Some irradiation results will also be given.

Abstract

The crosstalk between CMOS pixel sensors (CPS) degrades the performances of detector systems. Moreover, power distribution becomes a challenge in the future detectors for high energy physics experiments. In order to address these problems, a power management is proposed. Power supply voltages and reference voltages are internally generated in CPS. Two full on-chip linear regulators are proposed in this paper. Low area, low power consumption and low noise are achieved by a novel structure. The regulators have been designed and fabricated in a 0.35-μm commercial process. The measurement results are also presented.

Abstract

In order to solve the power distribution problem of detectors in high energy physics experiments, a full on-chip regulator is presented in this paper. It provides the analog power supply for CMOS pixel sensors. The maximum load current is 200 mA. The proposed regulator is stable in the full range of load current by introducing a zero and adapting the locations of poles and zeros. The compensation capacitance and resistance are significantly decreased to achieve low area. The chip area is only 0.044 mm2 excluding the bias and bandgap circuit, which can be shared with the other blocks in CMOS pixel sensors. The experimental results show that the output noise spectral density is less than 340 n VRMS/√Hz and 62 n VRMS/√Hz at 1 kHz and 100 kHz, respectively. The power consumption is 1.04 mW at the voltage of 3.3 V, when the load current is 200 mA.

Abstract

CMOS pixel sensors are foreseen to equip the vertex detector (called PXL) of the upgraded inner tracking system of the STAR experiment at RHIC. The sensors (called ULTIMATE) are being designed and their architecture is being optimized for the PXL specifications, extrapolating from the MIMOSA-26 sensor realized for the EUDET beam telescope. The paper gives an overview of the ULTIMATE sensor specifications and of the adaptation of its forerunner, MIMOSA-26, to the PXL specifications. One of the main changes between MIMOSA-26 and ULTIMATE is the use of a high resistivity epitaxial layer. Recent performance assessments obtained with MIMOSA-26 sensors manufactured on such an epitaxial layer are presented, as well as results of beam tests obtained with a prototype probing improved versions of the MIMOSA-26 pixel design. They show drastic improvements of the pixel signal-to-noise ratio and of the sensor radiation tolerance with respect to the performances achieved with a standard, i.e. low resistivity, layer.

Abstract

The physics goals of many high energy experiments require a precise determination of decay vertices, imposing severe constraints on vertex detectors (readout speed, granularity, material budget,…). The IPHC-IRFU collaboration developed a sensor architecture to comply with these requirements. The first full scale CMOS sensor was realised and equips the reference planes of the EUDET beam telescope. Its architecture is being adapted to the needs of the STAR (RHIC) and CBM (FAIR) experiments. It is a promising candidate for the ILC experiments and the ALICE detector upgrade (LHC). A substantial improvement to the CMOS sensor performances, especially in terms of radiation hardness, should come from a new fabrication technology with depleted sensitive volume. A prototype sensor was fabricated to explore the benefits of the technology. The crucial system integration issue is also currently being addressed. In 2009 the PLUME collaboration was set up to investigate the feasibility and performances of a light double sided ladder equipped with CMOS sensors, aimed primarily for the ILC vertex detector but also of interest for other applications such as the CBM vertex detector.

Abstract

Tracking performance of Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) developed at IPHC (Turchetta, et al., 2001) [1] have been extensively studied (Winter, et al., 2001; Gornushkin, et al., 2002) [2,3] . Numerous sensor prototypes, called MIMOSA, 1 were fabricated and tested since 1999 in order to optimise the charge collection efficiency and power dissipation, to minimise the noise and to increase the readout speed. The radiation tolerance was also investigated. The highest fluence tolerable for a 10 μ m pitch device was found to be ∼ 10 13 n eq / cm 2 , while it was only 2 × 10 12 n eq / cm 2 for a 20 μ m pitch device. The purpose of this paper is to show that the tolerance to non-ionising radiation may be extended up to O (10 14 ) n eq /cm 2 . This goal relies on a fabrication process featuring a 15 μ m thin, high resistivity ( ∼ 1 k Ω cm ) epitaxial layer. A sensor prototype (MIMOSA-25) was fabricated in this process to explore its detection performance. The depletion depth of the epitaxial layer at standard CMOS voltages ( 5 V ) is similar to the layer thickness. Measurements with m.i.p.s 2 show that the charge collected in the seed pixel is at least twice larger for the depleted epitaxial layer than for the undepleted one, translating into a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ∼ 50 . Tests after irradiation have shown that this excellent performance is maintained up to the highest fluence considered ( 3 × 10 13 n eq / cm 2 ) , making evidence of a significant extension of the radiation tolerance limits of MAPS.

Abstract

A high resolution beam telescope, based on CMOS Monolithic Active Pixels Sensors (MAPS), is being developed under the EUDET collaboration, a coordinated detector R&D program for a future international linear collider. A very good spatial resolution < 5 mum, a fast readout time of 100 mus for the whole array (136 times 576 pixels) and a high granularity can be obtained with this technology. A recent fast MAPS chip, designed in AMS CMOS 0.35 mum Opto process with 14 mum epitaxial layer and called MIMOSA22, was submitted to foundry. MIMOSA22 has an active area of 26.5 mm2 with a pixel pitch of 18.4 mum arranged in an array of 576 rows by 136 columns where 8 columns have analog test outputs and 128 have their outputs connected to offset compensated discriminator stages. The pixel array is divided in seventeen blocks of pixels, with different amplification gain, diode size, pixel architecture and is addressed row-wise through a serially programmable (JTAG) sequencer. Discriminators have a common adjustable threshold with internal DAC. MIMOSA22 is the last chip (IDC-Intermediate Digital Chip), before the final sensor of the EUDET-JRA1 beam telescope, which will be installed on the 6 GeV electron beam line at DESY. In this paper, laboratory test results on analog and digital parts are presented. Test beam results, obtained with a 120 GeV pion beam at CERN, are also presented. In the last part of the paper, results on irradiated chips are given.

A high resolution beam telescope, based on CMOS monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS), is being developed within the EUDET collaboration. Mimosa26 is the first pixel sensor covering an active area of ∼224 mm 2 with integrated zero suppression for this telescope. A single point resolution better than 4 μm is expected with a pixel pitch of 18.4 μm. The matrix is organised in 576 rows and 1152 columns. At the bottom of the pixel array, each column is connected to an offset compensated discriminator to perform the analogue to digital conversion. Digital data are then treated by a zero suppression circuit in order to send useful information. This architecture allows a fast readout frequency of ∼10 k frames/s. The paper concentrates on the details of the chip design and its main performances.

Abstract

A detector, equipped with 50 um thin CMOS Pixel Sensors (CPS), is being designed for the upgrade of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) of the ALICE experiment at LHC. Two CPS flavours, MISTRAL and ASTRAL, are being developed at IPHC aiming to meet the requirements of the ITS upgrade. The first is derived from the MIMOSA28 sensor designed for the STAR-PXL detector. The second, which integrates a discriminator in each pixel, improves the readout speed and power consumption. This paper will describe in details the sensor development and show some preliminary test results.

Abstract

A CMOS sensor chip for charged particle detection has been developed and submitted for fabrication in a 0.18 m Quadruple-Well (N&P-Wells, Deep N&P-Wells) CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) process. Improvement of the radiation hardness, the readout speed and the power dissipation of the mainstream CMOS sensors is expected with the exploration of this process. In order to ensure better charge collection and neutron tolerance, wafers with high-resistivity epitaxial layer have been chosen. The chip comprises several sub-chips, and in this paper one of them, a digital CMOS sensor prototype developed in order to validate the key analog blocs (from sensing element to I-bit digital conversion) of a binary MAPS in this process will be presented. The digital sensor prototype comprises four different sub-arrays of 20 μm pitch 64 × 32 pixels, 128 column-level auto-zeroed discriminators, a sequencer and an output digital multiplexer. Laboratory tests results including the charge-to-voltage conversion factor, the charge collection efficiency, the temporal noise and the fixed-pattern noise are presented in details. A 55Fe source is used for calibration of pixels. Some irradiation results will also be given.

The commissioning of the Fenno-Skan HVDC link between Finland and Sweden, with the longest submarine DC cable in the world, is described. The main pre-commissioning activities, important for an efficient commissioning, are discussed together with time schedules and suitable organisation forms. The procedures to test special control features, such as subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) damping control are presented. The full scale network interaction tests which are an important part of the commissioning are also discussed. These tests succeeded very well and provided a lot of information about the system behaviour for future operation and planning purposes. >

Abstract

In the framework of the EUDET-JRA1 project (European Detector R&D towards the International Linear Collider), which consists to design, realize and qualify a high resolution beam digital telescope, based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS), an intermediate digital chip sensor, MIMOSA22, has already been delivered with good detection performances. Although this intermediate chip has fulfilled all the initial requirements of the project, it was admitted that radiation tolerance behavior of the sensor could be improved, especially if the high precision telescope is used later in a hadron testbeam infrastructure. For this purpose, a new version of the sensor, MIMOSA22-BIS, has been designed, with improvement of several pixel architectures, and using the same AMS 0.35 μm opto process of the sensor MIMOSA22. This paper will be focused on tests performed in laboratory, using a 55Fe source, and tests performed in CERN-SPS, using a 120 GeV pion beam, in order to characterize detection performances of the chip with MIPs, before and after ionizing irradiation.

Abstract

The MIMOSA pixel sensors developed in Strasbourg have demonstrated attractive features for the detection of charged particles in high energy physics. So far, full-size sensors have been prototyped only with analog readout, which limits the output rate to about 1000 frames/second. The new MIMOSA 26 sensor provides a 2.2 cm2 sensitive surface with an improved readout speed of 10,000 frames/second and data throughput compression. It incorporates pixel output discrimination for binary readout and zero suppression micro-circuits at the sensor periphery to stream only fired pixel out. The sensor is back from foundry since february 2009 and has being characterized in laboratory and in test beam. The temporal noise is measured around 13-14 e− and an operation point corresponding to an efficiency of 99.5±0.1 % for a fake rate of 10−4 per pixel can be reached at room temperature. MIMOSA 26 equips the final version of the EUDET beam telescope and prefigures the architecture of monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) for coming vertex detectors (STAR, CBM and ILC experiments) which have higher requirements. Developments in the architecture and technology of the sensors are ongoing and should allow to match the desired readout speed and radiation tolerance. Finally, the integration of MAPS into a micro-vertex detector is addressed. A prototype ladder equipped, on both sides, with a row of 6 MIMOSA 26-like sensors is under study, aiming for a total material budget about 0.3% X 0 .

Abstract

A high resolution beam telescope, based on CMOS Monolithic Active Pixels Sensors (MAPS), is being developed within the EUDET collaboration, a coordinated detector R&D program for a future international linear collider. A very good spatial resolution ≪ 5 μm, a fast readout time of 100 μs for whole array and a high granularity can be obtained with this technology. A recent fast MAPS chip, designed on AMS CMOS 0.35 μm Opto process and called MIMOSA22, was submitted to foundry in October 2007. MIMOSA22 has an active area of 26.5 mm2 with a pixel pitch of 18.4 μm arranged in an array of 576 rows by 136 columns where 8 columns have analog test outputs and 128 have their outputs connected to offset compensated discriminator stages. The pixel array is divided in seventeen blocks of pixels, with different amplification gain, diode size, pixel architecture and is addressed row-wise through a serially programmable (JTAG) sequencer. The sequencer operates as a pattern generator which delivers control signals both to the pixels and to the column-level discriminators. Discriminators have a common adjustable threshold, with internal DAC, controlled by the JTAG. MIMOSA22 is the last chip (IDC-Intermediate Digital Chip), before the final sensor of the EUDET-JRA1 beam telescope, which will be installed at the 6 GeV electron beam line at DESY in spring 2009. In this paper, laboratory tests results on analog and digital parts are presented. For this purpose, a 55Fe source is used for calibration of pixels. Test beam results, obtained with a 120 GeV pions beam at CERN in summer 2008, are also presented. In the last part of the paper, a new chip MIMOSA22-bis, with radiation tolerant pixel architectures (evolution of MIMOSA22) will be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) have demonstrated their strong potential for tracking devices, particularly for flavour tagging. They are foreseen to equip several vertex detectors and beam telescopes. Most applications require high read-out speed, which imposes sensors to feature digital output with integrated zero suppression. The most recent development of MAPS at IPHC and IRFU addressing this issue will be reviewed. The design architecture, combining pixel array, column-level discriminators and zero suppression circuits, will be presented. Each pixel features a preamplifier and a correlated double sampling (CDS) micro-circuit reducing the temporal and fixed pattern noises. The sensor is fully programmable and can be monitored. It will equip experimental apparatus starting data taking in 2009/2010.

International audience; Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) have been proposed as sensing devices for the vertex detectors at the International Linear Collider (ILC), of the STAR upgrade and of the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment. These applications require substantial tolerance to non-ionising doses, which range up to $\sim10^{13}n_{eq}/cm^2$. Intense studies were undertaken in order to measure the, so far widely unknown, radiation hardness of MAPS optimised for charged particle tracking and to identify the dominating effects of non-ionising radiation on these devices. This paper focuses on the recombination of signal electrons in the sensitive volume, which is the dominating problem provoked by bulk damage in MAPS. The dependence of this effect on some aspects of the pixel architecture is discussed, aiming to optimise the latter with respect to radiation tolerance.

Abstract

We present a patient in whom unexpectedly late sensory recovery occurred over 5 years after removal of a 3-cm piece of the right inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) in tumor surgery of the mandible. For a year after surgery, the distribution of the mental nerve, the terminal branch of the IAN, was totally anesthetic. Thereafter, a gradual subjective sensory recovery occurred centripetally from the surrounding skin distributions. Five years after surgery, findings in electrophysiologic tests were consistent with a total lesion of the right IAN. Two years later, electrophysiologic tests gave, for the first time in humans, objective evidence for sensory collateral sprouting in trigeminal distribution.NEUROLOGY 1996;46: 1703-1705

Abstract

Future high energy physics experiments require high luminosities and efficient and pure bottom and charm tagging. Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) promise to be particularly well suited for these tasks. In contrast to other technologies, MAPS are fabricated using standard CMOS processes, which allows to implement on-chip data processing (system-on-chip). The paper concentrates on two aspects of the current R&D programme: the prototype for the upgrade of the vertex detector of the STAR experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory; architectures to handle the event rates expected at the International Linear Collider (ILC). The STAR experiment requires a sensor which operates at ambient temperatures. For this application, CMOS processes optimised for low leakage currents may be best suited. First results are presented which are obtained with a prototype (MIMOSA-9) build in such a process. Two concepts are presented for a vertex detector at the ILC: fast parallel readout and in situ storage.

Abstract

A detector, equipped with 50 μm thin CMOS Pixel Sensors (CPS), is being designed for the upgrade of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) of the ALICE experiment at LHC. Two CPS flavours, MISTRAL and ASTRAL, are being developed at IPHC aiming to meet the requirements of the ITS upgrade. The first is derived from the MIMOSA28 sensor designed for the STAR-PXL detector. The second integrates a discriminator in each pixel to improve the readout speed and power consumption. This paper will describe in details the sensor development and show some preliminary test results.

Abstract

ULTIMATE is a reticle size CMOS Pixel Sensor (CPS) designed to meet the requirements of the STAR pixel detector (PXL). It includes a pixel array of 928 rows and 960 columns with a 20.7 μm pixel pitch, providing a sensitive area of ~ 3.8 cm2. Based on the sensor designed for the EUDET beam telescope, the device is a binary output sensor with integrated zero suppression circuitry featuring a 320 Mbps data throughput capability. It was fabricated in a 0.35 μm OPTO process early in 2011. The design and preliminary test results, including charged particle detection performances measured at the CERN-SPS, are presented.

Abstract

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) demonstrate excellent performances in the field of charged particle tracking. A single point resolution of 1–2 μm and a detection efficiency close to 100% were routinely observed with various MAPS designs featuring up to 106 pixels on active areas as large as 4 cm2[1]. Those features make MAPS an interesting technology for vertex detectors in particle and heavy ion physics. In order to adapt the sensors to the high particle fluxes expected in this application, we designed a sensor with fast column parallel readout and partially depleted active volume. The latter feature was expected to increase the tolerance of the sensors to non-ionizing radiation by one order of magnitude with respect to the standard technology. This paper discusses the novel sensor and presents the results on its radiation tolerance.

Abstract

The Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) of the future Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will have to provide a spatial precision of $\sim 5~\rm \mu m$ in combination with a material budget of 0.3\% - 0.5\% X$_0$ for a full detector station. Simultaneously, it will have to handle the rate and radiation load of operating the fixed target experiment at an average collision rate of 100 kHz (4 - 10 AGeV Au+Au collisions) or 10 MHz (up to 28 GeV p-A collisions). The harsh requirements call for a dedicated detector technology, which is the next generation CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor MIMOSIS.
