Abstract: Abstract Non-standard interactions of neutrinos arising in many theories beyond the Standard Model can significantly alter matter effects in atmospheric neutrino propagation through the Earth. In this paper, a search for deviations from the prediction of the standard 3-flavour atmospheric neutrino oscillations using the data taken by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. Ten years of atmospheric neutrino data collected from 2007 to 2016, with reconstructed energies in the range from ∼16 GeV to 100 GeV, have been analysed. A log-likelihood ratio test of the dimensionless coefficients ε μτ and ε ττ − ε μμ does not provide clear evidence of deviations from standard interactions. For normal neutrino mass ordering, the combined fit of both coefficients yields a value 1.7σ away from the null result. However, the 68% and 95% confidence level intervals for ε μτ and ε ττ − ε μμ , respectively, contain the null value. Best fit values, one standard deviation errors and bounds at the 90% confidence level for these coefficients are given for both normal and inverted mass orderings. The constraint on ε μτ is among the most stringent to date and it further restrains the strength of possible non-standard interactions in the μ − τ sector.

Abstract: Abstract An offline search for a neutrino counterpart to gravitational-wave (GW) events detected during the second observation run (O2) of Advanced-LIGO and Advanced-Virgo performed with ANTARES data is presented. In addition to the search for long tracks induced by $$\nu _\mu $$ νμ ($${\overline{\nu }}_{\mu }$$ ν¯μ ) charged current interactions, a search for showering events induced by interactions of neutrinos of any flavour is conducted. The severe spatial and time coincidence provided by the gravitational-wave alert allows regions above the detector horizon to be probed, extending the ANTARES sensitivity over the entire sky. The results of this all-neutrino-flavour and all-sky time dependent analysis are presented. The search for prompt neutrino emission within ±500 s around the time of six GW events yields no neutrino counterparts. Upper limits on the neutrino spectral fluence and constraints on the isotropic energy radiated via high-energy neutrinos (from a few TeV to a few tens of PeV) are set for each GW event analysed.

Abstract: In the quest for high-energy neutrino sources, the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network has implemented a new search by combining data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory and the Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch (ANTARES) neutrino telescope. Using the same analysis strategy as in a previous detector combination of HAWC and IceCube data, we perform a search for coincidences in HAWC and ANTARES events that are below the threshold for sending public alerts in each individual detector. Abstract: Abstract The ANTARES neutrino telescope has an energy threshold of a few tens of GeV. This allows to study the phenomenon of atmospheric muon neutrino disappearance due to neutrino oscillations. In a similar way, constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model, which foresees the existence of one sterile neutrino, can be inferred. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2016, a new measurement of Δm 32 2 and θ 23 has been performed — which is consistent with world best-fit values — and constraints on the 3+1 neutrino model have been derived.

Abstract: Abstract One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.e. the deficit of the atmospheric muon flux from the direction of the Moon induced by the absorption of cosmic rays. Analysing the data taken between 2007 and 2016, the Moon shadow is observed with $$3.5\sigma $$ 3.5σ statistical significance. The detector angular resolution for downward-going muons is $$0.73^{\circ }\pm 0.14^{\circ }.$$ 0.73∘±0.14∘. The resulting pointing performance is consistent with the expectations. An independent check of the telescope pointing accuracy is realised with the data collected by a shower array detector onboard of a ship temporarily moving around the ANTARES location.

Abstract: This letter presents a combined measurement of the energy spectra of atmospheric νe and νμ in the energy range between ∼100 GeV and ∼50 TeV with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The analysis uses 3012 days of detector livetime in the period 2007–2017, and selects 1016 neutrinos interacting in (or close to) the instrumented volume of the detector, yielding shower-like events (mainly from νe+ν‾e charged current plus all neutrino neutral current interactions) and starting track events (mainly from νμ+ν‾μ charged current interactions). The contamination by atmospheric muons in the final sample is suppressed at the level of a few per mill by different steps in the selection analysis, including a Boosted Decision Tree classifier. The distribution of reconstructed events is unfolded in terms of electron and muon neutrino fluxes. The derived energy spectra are compared with previous measurements that, above 100 GeV, are limited to experiments in polar ice and, for νμ, to Super-Kamiokande.

Abstract: Neutrino detectors participate in the indirect search for the fundamental constituents of dark matter (DM) in form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In WIMP scenarios, candidate DM particles can pair-annihilate into Standard Model products, yielding considerable fluxes of high-energy neutrinos. A detector like ANTARES, located in the Northern Hemisphere, is able to perform a complementary search looking towards the Galactic Centre, where a high density of dark matter is thought to accumulate. Both this directional information and the spectral features of annihilating DM pairs are entered into an unbinned likelihood method to scan the data set in search for DM-like signals in ANTARES data. Results obtained upon unblinding 3170 days of data reconstructed with updated methods are presented, which provides a larger, and more accurate, data set than a previously published result using 2101 days. A non-observation of dark matter is converted into limits on the velocity-averaged cross section for WIMP pair annihilation.

8. Оn the study of behavioral suicide risk factors

Abstract: Abstract. Factors that increase the risk of suicide are: family problems (including the Commission and attempted suicide by family members), frequent cases of psychological pressure from both peers and teachers; school bullying; poor psychological stability (depression, lack of willpower, auto-aggression). Knowledge of these factors is necessary for parents, teachers, school psychologists, social teachers, peers of adolescents in order to timely recognize the danger of suicide and take the necessary measures. Studies of suicide risk factors are relevant due to the fact that they determine the transition from conception and conflict to the implementation of the intention in the form of a suicide act. The article presents differences in perceptions of suicide risk factors and best practices in the study of suicide risk factors, in particular, interesting and advanced studies reflected in the articles of authors from different countries and different periods. It is noted that researchers from foreign countries often do not use mass methods of assessing the situation, preferring a specific sample or more complex methods. As a result of the review of studies to identify suicide risk factors, it is noted that the suicide risk in adolescence has a multifactorial nature, including both psychopathological and psychological mechanisms, as well as environmental and social factors. The growth of auto-destructive behavioral trends at this age, followed by the choice of suicide as a way to solve the problems requires a thorough analysis of the personality of the minor, the sphere of interpersonal relations, features of education and other circumstances for the subsequent formation of strategies of psychosocial prevention and adaptation, as well as the development of forms and methods of psychological and social support for adolescents in the group of suicidal risk. Hermeneutic analysis of criminal case materials within the framework of forensic examination of the mental state of a teenager who committed suicide, as well as access to various sources of information about mental development, personal characteristics, family relationships and situational circumstances preceding suicide are considered as a promising method of suicide risk analysis. It is stated that this will allow to analyze the factors in the aspect of their temporary development, as well as interaction with each other. Abstract: Abstract Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well.

Abstract: Abstract Advanced LIGO detected a significant gravitational wave signal (GW170104) originating from the coalescence of two black holes during the second observation run on January 4th, 2017. An all-sky high-energy neutrino follow-up search has been made using data from the Antares neutrino telescope, including both upgoing and downgoing events in two separate analyses. No neutrino candidates were found within $$\pm 500$$ ± 500 s around the GW event time nor any time clustering of events over an extended time window of $$\pm 3$$ ± 3 months. The non-detection is used to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission from GW170104 to less than $$\sim {1.2}\times 10^{{55}}$$ ∼ 1.2 × 10 55 erg for a $$E^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum. This constraint is valid in the energy range corresponding to the 5–95% quantiles of the neutrino flux [3.2 TeV; 3.6 PeV], if the GW emitter was below the Antares horizon at the alert time.

Abstract: Abstract A search for magnetic monopoles using five years of data recorded with the ANTARES neutrino telescope from January 2008 to December 2012 with a total live time of 1121 days is presented. The analysis is carried out in the range β > 0.6 of magnetic monopole velocities using a strategy based on run-by-run Monte Carlo simulations. No signal above the background expectation from atmospheric muons and atmospheric neutrinos is observed, and upper limits are set on the magnetic monopole flux ranging from 5.7 × 10−16 to 1.5 × 10−18 cm−2·s−1·sr−1.

Abstract: Abstract A novel algorithm to reconstruct neutrino-induced particle showers within the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. The method achieves a median angular resolution of $$6^\circ $$ 6 ∘ for shower energies below 100 TeV. Applying this algorithm to 6 years of data taken with the ANTARES detector, 8 events with reconstructed shower energies above 10 TeV are observed. This is consistent with the expectation of about 5 events from atmospheric backgrounds, but also compatible with diffuse astrophysical flux measurements by the IceCube collaboration, from which 2–4 additional events are expected. A $$90\%$$ 90 % C.L. upper limit on the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux with a value per neutrino flavour of $$\text {E}^2\cdot \Phi ^{90\%} = 4.9 \cdot 10^{-8}\,\mathrm {GeV} \cdot \mathrm {cm^{-2} \cdot s^{-1}\cdot sr^{-1}}$$ E 2 · Φ 90 % = 4.9 · 10 - 8 GeV · cm - 2 · s - 1 · sr - 1 is set, applicable to the energy range from 23 TeV to 7.8 PeV, assuming an unbroken $$\text {E}^{-2}$$ E - 2 spectrum and neutrino flavour equipartition at Earth.

Abstract: Using data recorded with the ANTARES telescope from 2007 to 2015, a new search for dark matter annihilation in the Milky Way has been performed. Three halo models and five annihilation channels, WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W−,τ+τ−,μ+μ− and νν¯, with WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeVc2 to 100 TeVc2, were considered. No excess over the expected background was found, and limits on the thermally averaged annihilation cross-section were set.

Abstract: A search for muon neutrinos originating from dark matter annihilations in the Sun is performed using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2012. In order to obtain the best possible sensitivities to dark matter signals, an optimisation of the event selection criteria is performed taking into account the background of atmospheric muons, atmospheric neutrinos and the energy spectra of the expected neutrino signals. No significant excess over the background is observed and 90% C.L. upper limits on the neutrino flux, the spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections are derived for WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeV to 5 TeV for the annihilation channels WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W− and τ+τ−.

Abstract: Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the A ntares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origins could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational-wave and neutrino emission processes.

Abstract: [EN] A novel method to analyse the spatial distribution of neutrino candidates recorded with the ANTARES neutrino telescope is introduced, searching for an excess of neutrinos in a region of arbitrary size and shape from any direction in the sky. Techniques originating from the domains of machine learning, pat- tern recognition and image processing are used to purify the sample of neutrino candidates and for the analysis of the obtained skymap. In contrast to a dedicated search for a speci¿c neutrino emission model, this approach is sensitive to a wide range of possible morphologies of potential sources of high-energy neutrino emission. The application of these methods to ANTARES data yields a large-scale excess with a post-trial signi¿cance of 2.5¿ . Abstract: [EN] This work presents a new search for magnetic monopoles using data taken with the ANTARES neutrino telescope over a period of 10 years (January 2008 to December 2017). Compared to previous ANTARES searches, this analysis uses a run-by-run simulation strategy, with a larger exposure as well as a new simulation of magnetic monopoles taking into account the Kasama, Yang and Goldhaber model for their interaction cross-section with matter. No signal compatible with the passage of relativistic magnetic monopoles is observed, and upper limits on the ¿ux of magnetic monopoles with ß = v/c 0.55, are presented. 18. Post-spontaneous-symmetry-breaking power-laws after a very strong earthquake: Indication for the preparation of a new strong earthquake or not?

Abstract: It has recently been found that the evolution of the preparation of a strong earthquake (EQ), as it is monitored through fracture-induced electromagnetic emissions (EME) in the MHz band, presents striking similarity with the evolution of a thermal system as temperature drops, since distinct steps of the evolution of the phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) can be identified. Here, the study of fracture-induced EME in the MHz band in analogy to thermal systems is extended to the phase of local fracture structures that follow after the SSB (and the occurrence of the main EQ). By comparing fracture-induced MHz EME associated with the strongest EQs (MW=6.9) that occurred in Greece during the last twenty years with the 3D Ising model, a way to distinguish whether a possible identification of post-SSB power-laws immediately after a very strong EQ is a sign for the preparation of a new strong EQ or not is provided. In the suggested approach, the time series analysis method known as the method of critical fluctuations is used, enhanced by the autocorrelation function. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: A search for astrophysical pointlike neutrino sources using the data collected by the ANTARES detector between 2007 January 29 and 2017 December 31 is presented. A likelihood method is used to assess the significance of an excess of muon neutrinos inducing track-like events in correlation with the location of a list of possible sources. Different sets of objects are tested in the analysis: (a) a subsample of the Fermi 3LAC catalog of blazars, (b) a jet-obscured population of active galactic nuclei, (c) a sample of hard X-ray selected radio galaxies, (d) a star-forming galaxy catalog, and (e) a public sample of 56 very-high-energy track events from the IceCube experiment. None of the tested sources shows a significant association with the sample of neutrinos detected by ANTARES. The smallest p-value is obtained for the catalog of radio galaxies with an equal-weights hypothesis, with a pre-trial p-value equivalent to a 2.8σ excess, which is equivalent to 1.6σ post-trial. In addition, the results of a dedicated analysis for the blazar MG3 J225517+2409 are also reported: this source is found to be the most significant within the Fermi 3LAC sample, with five ANTARES events located less than one degree from the source. This blazar showed evidence of flaring activity in Fermi data, in spacetime coincidence with a high-energy track detected by IceCube. An a posteriori significance of 2.6σ for the combination of ANTARES and IceCube data is reported.

20. Quantifying the integrated physiological effects of endothelin-1 on cardiovascular and renal function in healthy subjects: a mathematical modeling analysis

Abstract: Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a potent vasoconstrictor with strong anti-natriuretic and anti-diuretic effects. While many experimental studies have elucidated the mechanisms of ET-1 through its two receptors, ETA and ETB, the complexity of responses and sometimes conflicting data make it challenging to understand the effects of ET-1, as well as potential therapeutic antagonism of ET-1 receptors, on human physiology. In this study, we aimed to develop an integrated and quantitative description of ET-1 effects on cardiovascular and renal function in healthy humans by coupling existing experimental data with a mathematical model of ET-1 kinetics and an existing mathematical model of cardiorenal function. Using a novel agnostic and iterative approach to incorporating and testing potential mechanisms, we identified a minimal set of physiological actions of endothelin-1 through ETA and ETB receptors by fitting the physiological responses (changes in blood pressure, renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and sodium/water excretion) to ET-1 infusion, with and without ETA/ETB antagonism. The identified mechanisms align with previous experimental studies on ET-1 and offer novel insights into the relative magnitude and significance of endothelin’s effects. This model serves as a foundation for further investigating the mechanisms of ET-1 and its antagonists.

Abstract: The Protvino accelerator facility located in the Moscow region, Russia, is in a good position to offer a rich experimental research program in the field of neutrino physics. Of particular interest is the possibility to direct a neutrino beam from Protvino towards the KM3NeT/ORCA detector, which is currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea 40 km offshore Toulon, France. This proposal is known as P2O. Thanks to its baseline of 2595 km, this experiment would yield an unparalleled sensitivity to matter effects in the Earth, allowing for the determination of the neutrino mass ordering with a high level of certainty after only a few years of running at a modest beam intensity of $\approx$ 90 kW. With a prolonged exposure ($\approx$ 1500 kW*yr), a 2$\sigma$ sensitivity to the leptonic CP-violating Dirac phase can be achieved. A second stage of the experiment, comprising a further intensity upgrade of the accelerator complex and a densified version of the ORCA detector (Super-ORCA), would allow for up to a 6$\sigma$ sensitivity to CP violation and a 10$^\circ$-17$^\circ$ resolution on the CP phase after 10 years of running with a 450 kW beam, competitive with other planned experiments. The initial composition and energy spectrum of the neutrino beam would need to be monitored by a near detector, to be constructed several hundred meters downstream from the proton beam target. The same neutrino beam and near detector set-up would also allow for neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements to be performed. Abstract: Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well.

Abstract: We describe 2 sibs with multiple congenital anomalies. The main manifestations include hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and/or cerebellar hypoplasia, Robin sequence, pharyngeal and laryngeal hypoplasia, abnormal ears, excessive neck skin, cardiac defect, and Hirschsprung disease. The presence in 2 sibs born to healthy, consanguineous parents suggests autosomal recessive inheritance. These anomalies must have arisen during blastogenesis; the syndrome resembles most the condition described in 1988 by Toriello and Carey.

Abstract: En este artículo se plantea que la agroforestería cierra la brecha entre la conservación y el desarrollo sostenible en la comunidad rural de Salitre y, por lo tanto, podría renombrarse como agroforestería social. En este territorio indígena hay una falta de empleo que, en consecuencia, conduce a la pobreza extrema; además de esto, hay prácticas inapropiadas en el uso de la tierra, tales como el uso del fuego para el control de malezas, así como el conflicto entre las poblaciones indígenas y no indígenas. Se observa la necesidad de establecer sistemas agroforestales en el área, ya que este tipo de modelo de producción es una mejor alternativa para el desarrollo rural en un sentido amplio. El artículo también destaca los sistemas tradicionales de producción indígena, ya que se argumenta que los bribris del sureste de Costa Rica fundaron una región basada en el uso y la conservación de los recursos forestales y la diversidad cultural. La agroforestería social es clave para comprender los sistemas de gestión de recursos naturales, las prácticas y los usos de la tierra, desde un punto de vista cultural. Por último, varias especies de plantas que crecen en Salitre pueden utilizarse como índice de conservación e interacción cultural, como alternativa de producción y como medio para lograr la seguridad alimentaria.

Abstract: 99Tcm-DMSA planar images of 49 randomly selected patients (10 adults, 39 children) were sent to 15 physicians at various centres in Belgium. They were asked to calculate, using their own routine program, the relative uptake (expressed as a percentage) of each kidney. The data were sent on disks formatted so that they could be read by all participants, using their own computer systems. For each scan, the inter-observer variability was expressed using the maximum difference and the standard deviation of left renal uptake. Left renal uptake measured by the 15 observers in the 49 patients was 29.0-72.0% (mean +/- s = 49.8 +/- 6.4%). The maximum differences in left renal uptake ranged between 1.7% and 12.0% (4.5 +/- 2.6%); however, the maximum difference did not exceed 8% in about 90% of the patients. The standard deviations of the individual left renal uptake were between 0.6 and 3.9 (1.3 +/- 0.8). The standard deviations were significantly higher in adults (mean standard deviation = 2.05) than in children (mean standard deviation = 1.12) (P < 0.001); this was probably related to the high background observed in three adults with severe renal impairment. Indeed there was a significant correlation (P < 0.001) between the standard deviation and both the signal-to-noise ratio and the degree of asymmetry between the right and left kidneys. The differences between right and left kidney uptake were systematically lower for some observers, suggesting an influence of the calculation programs.

31. A multicenter trial on interobserver reproducibility in reporting on 99mTc-DMSA planar scintigraphy: a Belgian survey

Abstract: Conflicting opinions have been expressed regarding reproducibility in 99mTc-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) planar renal image interpretation. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the level of interobserver variability among a large group of Belgian nuclear medicine physicians who evaluated a randomly selected series of DMSA planar scintigraphic examinations performed on children and adults.All Belgian nuclear medicine centers (n = 82) were invited to participate in a reproducibility study on 99mTc-DMSA scintigraphy. 99mTc-DMSA scans obtained on 10 adults and 40 children were randomly selected from the databases of 2 hospitals. Those participating in this investigation (65 centers = 79%) received a series of computer disks containing 50 99mTc-DMSA studies. To avoid potential problems related to unfamiliar display, the disks were formatted to be interpretable using the participants' own computer systems. Each participant was then free to use his or her usual display (hard copies, contrast enhancement, color scale, gray scale, and so forth). For each kidney, the observers had to choose between the following answers: normal, abnormal, equivocal, and lack of quality.Forty-two responses were obtained from a wide variety of institutions and from observers with different levels of experience in interpreting 99mTc-DMSA scintigraphy. Altogether, the following data were obtained: 60.8% normal, 25.2% abnormal, 7.0% equivocal, and 3.2% lack of quality. The median percentage of agreement (overall reproducibility) for the 42 observers was 92%. When the results of all 42 observers were compared, the median agreements on normality and abnormality were 93.5% and 90.5%, respectively. In a small number (n = 4) of kidneys, reproducibility was poor and ranged from 51% to 70%. Except for 2 outliers, all observers had almost the same level of performance.A large number of Belgian nuclear medicine physicians participated in evaluating a large randomly selected sample of 99mTc-DMSA studies, and excellent interobserver agreement was found.

Abstract: Cardiac and renal function are inextricably connected through both hemodynamic and neurohormonal mechanisms, and the interaction between these organ systems plays an important role in adaptive and pathophysiologic remodeling of the heart, as well as in the response to renally acting therapies. Insufficient understanding of the integrative function or dysfunction of these physiological systems has led to many examples of unexpected or incompletely understood clinical trial results. Mathematical models of heart and kidney physiology have long been used to better understand the function of these organs, but an integrated model of renal function and cardiac function and cardiac remodeling has not yet been published. Here we describe an integrated cardiorenal model that couples existing cardiac and renal models, and expands them to simulate cardiac remodeling in response to pressure and volume overload, as well as hypertrophy regression in response to angiotensin receptor blockers and beta-blockers. The model is able to reproduce different patterns of hypertrophy in response to pressure and volume overload. We show that increases in myocyte diameter are adaptive in pressure overload not only because it normalizes wall shear stress, as others have shown before, but also because it limits excess volume accumulation and further elevation of cardiac stresses by maintaining cardiac output and renal sodium and water balance. The model also reproduces the clinically observed larger LV mass reduction with angiotensin receptor blockers than with beta blockers. We further provide a mechanistic explanation for this difference by showing that heart rate lowering with beta blockers limits the reduction in peak systolic wall stress (a key signal for myocyte hypertrophy) relative to ARBs.

Abstract: alpha 2- and beta-adrenergic receptors in human placental membranes have been investigated using the radioligands [3H]-RX 821002 and [3H]-dihydroalprenolol, respectively. The specific binding of the alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist RX 821002 confirms the presence of an alpha 2-adrenoceptor in the human placenta, which has been characterized previously with [3H]-rauwolscine. The major finding presented here is a correlation between the alpha 2- and beta-adrenergic receptor concentrations (r = 0.765) in the human placenta at term. It is suggested that the alpha 2/beta adrenoceptor balance may play an important role in regulation of the vascular bed of the placenta. Determination of the alpha 2/beta ratio may help towards an understanding of the contractility of the placental vascular muscles.

Abstract: Six new ecdysteroids have been isolated from SERRATULA TINCTORIA; these are: the 2,22- and 3,22-diacetates of 20-hydroxyecdysone, 5beta-hydroxyrubrosterone, 3-epi-poststerone, 3-epi-rubrosterone, and 22-oxo-20-hydroxyecdysone. These minor compounds were found together with the known ecdysteroids, 20-hydroxyecdysone, its 2-, 3-, and 22-monoacetates, rubrosterone, poststerone, polypodine B (5beta,20-dihydroxyecdysone), pterosterone (25-deoxy-20,24-dihydroxyecdysone), and makisterone C (24-ethyl-20-hydroxyecdysone). All these ecdysteroids were isolated by a combination of several chromatographic techniques (liquid chromatography on alumina, DCCC, and HPLC), then identified using standard mass spectrometric and 2D (1)H-NMR techniques.

Abstract: We performed 99mTc dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scan and ultrasonography in 146 children during the acute phase of a proven urinary tract infection (UTI). In 99 a micturating cysto-urethrography and in 83 an intravenous urography was also done. The occurrence of fever and increased WBC count, CRP and ESR were also studied. It appeared from this retrospective study that 47% of the kidneys had a cortical or patchy pattern of decreased uptake of 99mTc DMSA, as compared to 23% with abnormal findings on US. Vesico-ureteral reflux was present in 38% of the kidneys with parenchymal involvement on 99mTc DMSA scan. Although fever, leucocytosis and elevated CRP and ESR were significantly correlated with abnormal 99mTc DMSA scan, they were also observed in children without renal parenchymal involvement. Our results suggest that 99mTc DMSA scan is a sensitive method for the detection of parenchymal involvement during acute UTI. The exact nature of these lesions and their relation with scars need, however, to be defined.

Abstract: In order to study the effect of cisapride on gastric stasis and to evaluate the possible risk of cholestasis, 20 premature neonates born in the hospital during one year were orally treated with cisapride 0.15 mg/kg q.i.d., over a mean period of 38 days. The gestational age ranged from 26 to 34 weeks and the mean age at the start of the cisapride treatment was 18 days. All patients were ventilated, 13 had a respiratory distress syndrome (hyaline membrane disease), and 9 had gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR). All patients were given a semielementary formula by means of a continuous nasogastric infusion. The gastric residue was studied during three days: 24 hour baseline and 48 hours under cisapride treatment. The mean residue decreased (p less than 0.0001) from 50.6% during the last 6 baseline hours to 12.1% during the last 6-hours of the cisapride period. The mean feeding volume increased from 24.2 ml to 34.2 ml (p less than 0.001). A group of four patients had reversible cholestasis against the background of an outbreak of Candida, three before and one during cisapride treatment. Therefore, it could not be demonstrated that cisapride plays a role in the development of cholestasis. Because of the risks of GOR and the drawbacks of delayed enteral feeding, it is concluded that the use of cisapride is justified in premature neonates with gastric stasis.

38. [Chemical pneumonia in children]

Abstract: Between 1980 and 1989 the Children's Hospital of Antwerp admitted 954 children with signs of intoxication. In 83 cases (9%) these were due to ingestion of hydrocarbons, 17 of these 83 children (21%) had chemical pneumonia. The most frequent chemicals were turpentine, petrol and lamp oil. The main symptoms were vomiting, skin rash, coughing and fever accompanied by an infectious blood count. Roentgen abnormalities in this group were less frequent than reported in the literature. A chest X-ray immediately after admission does not always provide information about pneumonia because abnormalities may already be present, e.g. due to an acute lung condition; nevertheless it is necessary for further study, if any. An X-ray after 24 hours is indispensable to confirm or exclude chemical pneumonia. As regards treatment, only supportive therapy is possible. Abstract: An amino acid sequence is proposed for the cytochrome c4 from the bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii strain OP. It is a single polypeptide chain of 190 residues, with two sets of haem-attachment cysteine residues at positions 14/17 and 119/122. Proteins with similar sequences are also present in denitrifying pseudomonads. There is similarity in sequence between the two halves of the cytochrome c4 molecule, and each half also shows similarity to the sequences of certain monohaem cytochromes c isolated from organisms that are not obviously closely related to A. vinelandii. Detailed evidence for the amino acid sequence of the protein has been deposited as Supplementary Publication SUP 50125 (17 pages) at the British Library Lending Division, Boston Spa, West Yorkshire LS23 7BQ, U.K., from whom copies are available on prepayment.

47. Structure of Azotobacter vinelandii 7Fe ferredoxin. Amino acid sequence and electron density maps of residues

Abstract: The complete amino acid sequence of the 7Fe ferredoxin from Azotobacter vinelandii (Av Fd) was determined by repetitive Edman degradation of the whole protein and of peptides derived from CNBr cleavage or chymotrypsin digestion. The sequence was confirmed by the 2A electron density maps for the residues calculated with difference Fourier coefficients. The density maps for all residues are included in the paper. Av Fd has several important differences with the clostridial-type ferredoxins: (i) Av Fd is 106 residues (versus 55-60 for other bacterial ferredoxins); (ii) Av Fd has 9 cysteines, one of which (residue 24) is not homologous with the bacterial ferredoxins; (iii) Av Fd has 2 extra residues between 2 cysteines (residues 11 and 16) homologous to cysteines in the bacterial ferredoxins; and (iv) Av Fd has the unique sequence -Cys-Val-Glu-Val-Cys- (residues 16-20) which are two of the ligands of the 3Fe:3S center. These sequence features are compared to the sequences of various ferredoxin groups. Structure predictions for other suspected 7Fe ferredoxins are discussed.

Abstract: The etiology and pathogenesis of oligomeganephronic renal hypoplasia (OMN) are not known. In the present paper a second case of monozygotic twins non-concordant for OMN is described. It is hypothesized that one of the mechanisms which have been proposed to explain structural defects in monozygotic twins, namely placental artery-vein shunting, may have been involved in the pathogenesis of OMN in these patients. In OMN in general vascular abnormalities may have to be considered as a pathogenetic mechanism.

Abstract: Purpose: To determine the prevalence of anterior vitreous detachment (AVD) in routine bag-in-the-lens (BIL) cataract cases and possibly to identify risk factors for its presence., Setting: University Hospital of Antwerp, Belgium., Design: Prospective cross-sectional study., Methods: Patients having routine BIL cataract surgery were included. Patients with traumatic cataract, previous intraocular surgeries, YAG laser treatment, intravitreal injection, or medical conditions that might affect normal ophthalmologic anatomy were excluded. Several parameters were collected from the patients' records, and their surgical videos/photographs/optical coherence tomography were evaluated., Results: 99 eyes of 99 patients were included. Detectable AVD was observed in 62 eyes (63%). AVD was not present in 37 eyes (37%). The difference in prevalence of AVD between men and women was not statistically significant ( P = .55, Pearson χ 2 test). The Mann-Whitney U test for axial length was not statistically significant ( P = .38). However, it was statistically significant for age ( P < .005). A logistic regression model to ascertain the effect of age on the likelihood that patients had AVD did reach statistical significance (χ 2 (1) = 8.246, P < .005)., Conclusions: The prevalence of AVD in a routine cataract population was 63%. Age was identified as a risk factor. This study model determined that the odds for AVD increase 5.3% with each year of patient age. These data allowed for better preoperative and postoperative assessment of complications. The BIL, by its mandatory primary posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis, did not increase the risk for postoperative ocular complications in the posterior segment of the eye., (Copyright © 2021 Published by Wolters Kluwer on behalf of ASCRS and ESCRS.)
