The present paper describes a holistic energy efficient retrofit of low income multiple social housing located in Athens, Greece. A holistic analysis was conducted in order to determine the optimum retrofit plan that includes innovative and state of the art commercially available technologies, passive techniques as well as renewable energy sources, aiming to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint, improve indoor environmental conditions and be cost effective at the same time. An extensive experimental campaign including air leakage measurements, thermal imaging, energy consumption and indoor environmental quality measurements was conducted before and after the implementation of the retrofit. In addition, advanced building simulation, occupant surveys and socioeconomic analyses were performed in order to evaluate the impact of the retrofit and estimate specific performance indicators.

Light pipes can provide daylight and improve lighting conditions in buildings. Knowledge of their optical performance is a prerequisite for their successful integration into buildings. This article presents and analyses the experimental performance and the specific efficiency characteristics of a light pipe as integrated into an experimental test-cell. Extensive measurements are performed for eight continuous months under clear, cloudy and intermediate sky conditions. The spatial and temporal variability of the indoor illuminance is analysed using clustering techniques. It is found that there is an almost exponential relation between the average and the maximum indoor illuminance with the exterior illuminance levels. In parallel, a strong spatial inhomogeneity is observed under all sky conditions. The transmissivity or Daylight Penetration Factor of the light pipe is found to present a strong daily variation during the clear days while it was almost constant under cloudy sky condtions. A clear correlation of the light pipe’s Daylight Penetration Factor is found against the solar azimuh and solar altitude especially under clear sky conditions.

Urban overheating affects the energy, health, power, survivability and environmental quality of cities. We calculated the magnitude of overheating in Sydney, Australia, at close to 9 °C, which causes a cooling penalty of up to 16% and an increase in the indoor overheating levels of up to 56%. We developed and evaluated eight heat mitigation scenarios based on the use of reflective surfaces, additional greenery, an increase in the evapotranspiration rate and several combinations of these factors. We estimated that mitigation can decrease the peak ambient temperature by up to 2.9 °C, reduce the maximum annual cooling consumption by up to 1.5 TWh, decrease the CO2 emissions by as much as 1.21 MT CO2, reduce indoor overheating by up to 80%, decrease the heat-related morbidity by 1.07–1.49, and decrease the heat-related mortality anomaly by as much as 1.39 per 100,000 citizens. We estimated the associated water penalty range to be between 80 and 100 Gl/year or between 13 and 16.7% of the water consumption in Sydney. © 2020

The present paper deals with the application of 4500 m2 of reflective pavements in an urban park in the greater Athens area. The aim was to improve thermal comfort conditions, reduce the intensity of heat island and improve the global environmental quality in the considered area. To our knowledge, this has been the largest application of cool pavements in urban areas in the world. To evaluate the thermal impact of cool paving materials, specific and detailed measurements of the climatic conditions in the park have been performed before and after the installation of the new materials. Validated computerized fluid dynamics techniques have been used to homogenize the boundary conditions occurring during the two experiments and to perform direct comparisons of the climatic quality in the park. It was estimated that the use of cool paving materials contributes to the reduction of the peak ambient temperature during a typical summer day, by up to 1.9 K. At the same time, the surface temperature in the park was decreased by 12 K, while comfort conditions have been improved considerably. It is concluded that the use of reflective paving materials is a very efficient mitigation technique to improve thermal conditions in urban areas.

Solar chimneys may provide enough ventilation to buildings when properly designed. Although many design tools, theoretical models and experimental studies have been reported, the impact of many design parameters such as the construction thickness, the thermal resistance of the walls, the absorptivity of the internal surfaces of the chimney, the thermal mass of the chimney and the type of glazing, is not well known. This paper aims to provide information on the optimum sizing of the above parameters. Dynamic simulations and sensitivity analysis have been carried out and specific information on the impact of each parameter is given.

University campuses can be considered as small towns due to their size, number of users and mixed and complex activities, including numerous actions usually met in urban environments. The energy and environmental impact of universities could be considerably reduced by applying organizational, technological and energy optimization measures. The aim of the present paper is to present an efficient web based energy management system for Campuses which manages in an energy efficient way the Campus buildings and spaces of public use, monitors the energy load and performs energy analysis per building and for the Campus as a whole, as well as it interacts with each building's BEMS and each user through questionnaires, e-mails and forms. The existing Campus IP infrastructure is exploited by using sensor networks, where nodes communicate their information using Web services, allowing direct integration in modern IT systems. To guarantee the system scalability and respect consolidated and diffused standards, the logical/architectural level of the whole Campus Energy Management System is linked with the existing infrastructure based on Internet Protocol (IP). The overall installation is tested via on line questionnaires to the building users showing a significant increase of the occupants' satisfaction. The paper presents the architectural, engineering and energy design of a laboratory building located in Cyprus. The building is designed to meet near-zero energy consumption criteria using advanced energy conservation measures, smart energy management and solar thermal and photovoltaic systems to cover the remaining energy load. The energy conservation techniques used result in reduced energy consumption of the building by almost 70% compared with a conventional building, while almost 27% of the remaining heating-, cooling- and lighting load is covered by photovoltaics. A concentrating solar thermal system for cooling and heating is being installed to cover the remainder of the load.
