1. A 20-year (1998–2017) global sea surface dimethyl sulfide gridded dataset with daily resolution

Abstract

The oceanic emission of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) plays a vital role in the Earth's climate system and constitutes a substantial source of uncertainty when evaluating aerosol radiative forcing. Currently, the widely used monthly climatology of sea surface DMS concentration falls short of meeting the requirement for accurately simulating DMS-derived aerosols with chemical transport models. Hence, there is an urgent need for a high-resolution, multi-year global sea surface DMS dataset. Here we develop an artificial neural network ensemble model that uses nine environmental factors as input features and captures the variability of the DMS concentration across different oceanic regions well. Subsequently, a global sea surface DMS concentration and flux dataset (1° × 1°) with daily resolution spanning from 1998 to 2017 is established. According to this dataset, the global annual average concentration was ∼ 1.71 nM, and the annual total emissions were ∼ 17.2 Tg S yr−1, with ∼ 60 % originating from the Southern Hemisphere. While overall seasonal variations are consistent with previous DMS climatologies, notable differences exist in regional-scale spatial distributions. The new dataset enables further investigations into daily and decadal variations. Throughout the period 1998–2017, the global annual average concentration exhibited a slight decrease, while total emissions showed no significant trend. The DMS flux from our dataset showed a stronger correlation with the observed atmospheric methanesulfonic acid concentration compared to those from previous monthly climatologies. Therefore, it can serve as an improved emission inventory of oceanic DMS and has the potential to enhance the simulation of DMS-derived aerosols and associated radiative effects. Abstract

Leaf area index (LAI) is a crucial parameter for characterizing vegetation canopy structure and energy absorption capacity. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI has played a significant role in landmark studies due to its clear theoretical basis, extensive historical time series, extensive validation results, and open accessibility. However, MODIS LAI retrievals are calculated independently for each pixel and a specific day, resulting in high noise levels in the time series and limiting its applications in the regions of optical remote sensing. Reprocessing MODIS LAI predominantly relies on temporal information to achieve smoother LAI profiles with little use of spatial information and may easily ignore genuine LAI anomalies. To address these problems, we designed the spatiotemporal information compositing algorithm (STICA) for the reprocessing of MODIS LAI products. This method integrates information from multiple dimensions, including pixel quality information, spatiotemporal correlation, and the original retrieval, thereby enabling both “reprocessing” and “value-added data” with respect to the existing MODIS LAI products, leading to the development of the high-quality LAI (HiQ-LAI) dataset. Compared with ground measurements, HiQ-LAI shows better performance than the original MODIS product with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) or bias decrease from 0.87 or −0.17 to 0.78 or −0.06, respectively. This is due to the improvement of HiQ-LAI with respect to capturing the seasonality in vegetation phenology and reducing abnormal time-series fluctuations. The time-series stability (TSS) index, which represents temporal stability, indicated that the area with smooth LAI time series expanded from 31.8 % (MODIS) to 78.8 % (HiQ) globally, and this improvement is more obvious in equatorial regions where optical remote sensing cannot usually achieve good performance. We found that HiQ-LAI demonstrates superior continuity and consistency compared with raw MODIS LAI from both spatial and temporal perspectives. We anticipate that the global HiQ-LAI time series, generated using the STICA procedure on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, will substantially enhance support for diverse global LAI time-series applications. Abstract

A promising pollution control technology is cold plasma driven chemical processing. The plasma is a pulsed electric gas discharge inside a near atmospheric-pressure-temperature reactor. The system is energized by a continuous stream of very short high-voltage pulses. The exhaust gas to be treated flows through the reactor. The methods applied involve the development of robust cold plasma systems, industrial applications and measuring technologies. Tests of the systems were performed at many industrial sites and involved control of airborne VOC (volatile organic compound) and odor. Electrical, chemical and odor measuring data were collected with state-of-the-art methods. To explain the test data an approximate solution of global reaction kinetics of pulsed plasma chemistry was developed. It involves the Lambert function and, for convenience, a simple approximation of it. The latter shows that the amount of removal, in good approximation, is a function of a single variable. This variable is electric plasma power divided by gas flow divided by input concentration. In the results sections we show that in some cases up to 99% of volatile pollution can be removed at an acceptable energy requirement. In the final sections we look into future efficiency enhancements by implementation of (sub)nanosecond pulsed plasma and solid state high-voltage technology and by integration with catalyst technology.

4. Sensor-independent LAI/FPAR CDR: reconstructing a global sensor-independent climate data record of MODIS and VIIRS LAI/FPAR from 2000 to 2022

Abstract

Leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) are critical biophysical parameters for the characterization of terrestrial ecosystems. Long-term global LAI/FPAR products, such as the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), provide the fundamental dataset for accessing vegetation dynamics and studying climate change. However, existing global LAI/FPAR products suffer from several limitations, including spatial–temporal inconsistencies and accuracy issues. Considering these limitations, this study develops a sensor-independent (SI) LAI/FPAR climate data record (CDR) based on Terra-MODIS/Aqua-MODIS/VIIRS LAI/FPAR standard products. The SI LAI/FPAR CDR covers the period from 2000 to 2022, at spatial resolutions of 500 m/5 km/0.05∘, 8 d/bimonthly temporal frequencies and available in sinusoidal and WGS1984 projections. The methodology includes (i) comprehensive analyses of sensor-specific quality assessment variables to select high-quality retrievals, (ii) application of the spatial–temporal tensor (ST-tensor) completion model to extrapolate LAI and FPAR beyond areas with high-quality retrievals, (iii) generation of SI LAI/FPAR CDR in various projections and various spatial and temporal resolutions, and (iv) evaluation of the CDR by direct comparisons with ground data and indirectly through reproducing results of LAI/FPAR trends documented in the literature. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of each step involved in the generation of the SI LAI/FPAR CDR, as well as evaluation of the ST-tensor completion model. Comparisons of SI LAI (FPAR) CDR with ground truth data suggest an RMSE of 0.84 LAI (0.15 FPAR) units with R2 of 0.72 (0.79), which outperform the standard Terra/Aqua/VIIRS LAI (FPAR) products. The SI LAI/FPAR CDR is characterized by a low time series stability (TSS) value, suggesting a more stable and less noisy dataset than sensor-dependent counterparts. Furthermore, the mean absolute error (MAE) of the CDR is also lower, suggesting that SI LAI/FPAR CDR is comparable in accuracy to high-quality retrievals. LAI/FPAR trend analyses based on the SI LAI/FPAR CDR agree with previous studies, which indirectly provides enhanced capabilities to utilize this CDR for studying vegetation dynamics and climate change. Overall, the integration of multiple satellite data sources and the use of advanced gap filling modeling techniques improve the accuracy of the SI LAI/FPAR CDR, ensuring the reliability of long-term vegetation studies, global carbon cycle modeling, and land policy development for informed decision-making and sustainable environmental management. Abstract

The formation of economic yield and fruit quality of Roxburgh rose (Rosa roxburghii Tratt.) depends essentially on its source-sink interaction. Thus, a pruning experiment was conducted to assess the effects of source-sink regulation on photosynthetic physiology and fruit yield of Roxburgh rose, which was of great significance to production. Cutting off vegetative branches reduced physiological fruit loss and malformed fruits but increased single fruit quality and yield. Results revealed that the stomatal characteristics, the composition of mesophyll tissue, and photosynthesis of leaves on reproductive branches were significantly affected by the ratio of the vegetative and reproductive shoots. Our data indicated that the source-sink ratio could reflect the balance between vegetative growth and reproductive growth of the tree during the whole fruit period. Fruit tree pruning had guiding significance for improving the fruit yield of Roxburgh rose.

Abstract

Analyzing the diffusion kinetics behavior that leads to precipitates formation can assist in understanding the properties of Zr alloy materials. In this study, coarsening growth kinetics of precipitates in N36 zirconium alloy with Nb dominant are experimentally calculated during the isothermal and isochronal aging process (580 °C–700 °C, 0.5–30 h respectively). Microstructure observation and the second phase particles (SPPs) have been investigated and numerically extracted through several processes, including the use of an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in addition to image software tools. Conclusions confirm that as the temperature or aging period increases, the SPPs begin to lose fine and linear distribution properties ranging from α-plate grain boundary to the random distributions. Moreover, the small particles dissolve, whereas the large ones grow, accurately pursuing the Ostwald ripening property. Besides, most SPPs are found to be in the form of Zr(Nb, Fe)2, and some of them are (Zr,Nb)2Fe. The activation energy of kinetic growth of precipitates has been experimentally calculated using Kahlwiet second-order kinetics and found to be 206 kJ/mol. Compared to other documented Zr-alloy series, we have noticed that the different types of SPPs and the Nb element content in most contribute greatly to the slow diffusion rate, explaining the higher value in the activation energy of the precipitates growth process.

Abstract

Abstract We present a method for calculating event shapes in QCD based on correlation functions of conserved currents. The method has been previously applied to the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, but we demonstrate that supersymmetry is not essential. As a proof of concept, we consider the simplest example of a charge-charge correlation at one loop (leading order). We compute the correlation function of four electromagnetic currents and explain in detail the steps needed to extract the event shape from it. The result is compared to the standard amplitude calculation. The explicit four-point correlation function may also be of interest for the CFT community.

Abstract

A key challenge in the fabrication of ferromagnetically filled carbon nano-onions (CNOs) is the control of their thickness, dimensions and electric properties. Up to now literature works have mainly focused on the encapsulation of different types of ferromagnetic materials including α-Fe, Fe3C, Co, FeCo, FePd3 and others within CNOs. However, no report has yet shown a suitable method for controlling both the number of shells, diameter and electric properties of the produced CNOs. Here, we demonstrate an advanced chemical vapour deposition approach in which the use of small quantities of sulfur during the pyrolysis of ferrocene allows for the control of (i) the diameter of the CNOs, (ii) the number of shells and (iii) the electric properties. We demonstrate the morphological, structural, electric and magnetic properties of these new types of CNOs by using SEM, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, EIS and VSM techniques.

10. The interplay between human population dynamics and flooding in Bangladesh: a spatial analysis

Abstract

In Bangladesh, socio-economic and hydrological processes are both extremely dynamic and inter-related. Human population patterns are often explained as a response, or adaptation strategy, to physical events, e.g. flooding, salt-water intrusion, and erosion. Meanwhile, these physical processes are exacerbated, or mitigated, by diverse human interventions, e.g. river diversion, levees and polders. In this context, this paper describes an attempt to explore the complex interplay between floods and societies in Bangladeshi floodplains. In particular, we performed a spatially-distributed analysis of the interactions between the dynamics of human settlements and flood inundation patterns. To this end, we used flooding simulation results from inundation modelling, LISFLOOD-FP, as well as global datasets of population distribution data, such as the Gridded Population of the World (20 years, from 1990 to 2010) and HYDE datasets (310 years, from 1700 to 2010). The outcomes of this work highlight the behaviour of Bangladeshi floodplains as complex human–water systems and indicate the need to go beyond the traditional narratives based on one-way cause–effects, e.g. climate change leading to migrations.

Abstract

Airborne LiDAR data and optical imagery are two datasets used for 3D building reconstruction. By study of the complementarities of these two datasets, we proposed a primitive-based 3D building reconstruction method, which can use LiDAR data and optical imagery at the same time. The proposed method comprises following steps: (1) recognize primitives from LiDAR point cloud and roughly measure primitives’ parameters as initial values, and (2) select primitives' features on the imagery, and (3) optimize primitives' parameters by the constraints of LiDAR point cloud and imagery, and (4) represent 3D building model by these optimized primitives. Compared with other model-based or CSG-based methods, the proposed method has some advantages. It is simpler, because it only uses the most straightforward features, i.e. planes of LiDAR point cloud and points of optical imagery. And it can tightly integrate LiDAR point cloud and optical imagery, that is to say, all primitives' parameters are optimized with all constraints in one step. Recently, an ISPRS Test Project on Urban Classification and 3D Building Reconstruction was launched, two datasets both with airborne LiDAR data and images are provided. The proposed method was applied to Area 3 of Dataset 1 Vaihingen, in which there are some buildings with plane roofs or gable roofs. The organizer of this test project evaluated the submitted reconstructed 3D model using reference data. The result shows the feasibility of the proposed 3D building reconstruction method.

12. Effects of air-drying and freezing on phosphorus fractions in soils with different organic matter contents

Abstract

Little is known about the effects of air-drying and freezing on the transformation of phosphorus (P) fractions in soils. It is important that the way in which soils respond to such perturbations is better understood as there are implications for both P availability and loss to surface waters from soils. In this study, the effects of air-drying and freezing were investigated using two soils, one being a forest soil (FS) high in organic matter and the other being a sterile soil (SS) low in organic matter. Soil P was fractionated using a modified Hedley fractionation method to examine the changes of phosphorus fractions induced by air-drying and freezing. Generally, there were no significant differences of total phosphorus among the three treatments (CV% < 10%). Compared with field moist soils, freezing the soil evoked few changes on phosphorus fractions except that the resin-P increased in FS soil. On the contrary, air-drying significantly changed the distribution of phosphors fractions for both soils: increased the labile-P (especially resin-P) and organic-P (NaHCO3-Po, NaOH-Po and Con.HCl-Po) at the expense of NaOH-Pi and occlude-P (Dil.HCl-P and Con.HCl-Pi). Resin-P significantly increased by 31% for SS soil and by 121% for FS soil upon air-drying. The effect of air-drying seemed to be more pronounced in the FS soil with high organic matter content. These results indicated that drying seem to drive the P transformation form occlude-P to labile-P and organic-P and accelerated the weathering of stable P pool. This potentially could be significant for soil P supply to plants and P losses from soils to surface waters under changing patterns of rainfall and temperature as predicted by some climate change scenarios.

16. RAB27B Drives a Cancer Stem Cell Phenotype in NSCLC Cells Through Enhanced Extracellular Vesicle Secretion

Abstract

Cancer stem cells (CSC) within non–small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) tumors drive NSCLC progression, metastasis, relapse, and intrinsic chemoresistance. Understanding the mechanisms that support the malignant phenotypes of NSCLC CSCs may provide insights for improved NSCLC therapeutic interventions. Here, we report that expression of RAB27B, a small GTPase, is significantly upregulated in NSCLC CSCs when compared with bulk cancer cells (BCC). Short hairpin RNA–mediated knockdown of RAB27B leads to a loss of stem cell marker gene expression and reduced NSCLC spheroid growth, clonal expansion, transformed growth, invasion, and tumorigenicity. We find that NSCLC CSCs secrete significantly more extracellular vesicles (EV) than BCCs, and that this is RAB27B-dependent. Furthermore, CSC-derived EVs, but not BCC-derived EVs, induce spheroid growth, clonal expansion, and invasion in BCCs. Finally, RAB27B is required for CSC-derived EV-induced stemness in BCCs. Taken together, our results indicate that RAB27B is required for maintenance of a highly tumorigenic, cancer-initiating, invasive stem-like cell population in NSCLC and RAB27B is involved in propagating EV-mediated communication from NSCLC CSCs to BCCs. Our findings further suggest that inhibition of RAB27B-dependent EV secretion may be a potential therapeutic strategy for NSCLC. Significance: Expression of RAB27B in CSCs leads to elevated levels of EVs that mediate communication between CSCs and BCCs that maintains a stem-like phenotype in NSCLC cells.

ImportanceMethotrexate is widely used for the treatment of inflammatory disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis. Studies suggest that methotrexate may be associated with an increased risk of melanoma.ObjectiveTo determine whether methotrexate exposure is associated with an increased risk of cutaneous melanoma.Data SourcesMEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched from inception to May 12, 2022, for eligible studies.Study SelectionCase-control studies, cohort studies, or randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included if they examined the odds or risk of cutaneous melanoma in individuals exposed to low-dose methotrexate in comparison with individuals unexposed. No language limitations were applied.Data Extraction and SynthesisTwo independent reviewers extracted data on study characteristics and outcome data. The Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines were followed. To assess study quality, the Cochrane risk of bias tool was used for RCTs, and the Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist was used for cohort and case-control studies. Odds ratio from case-control studies and relative risk or hazard ratio from cohort studies or RCTs were pooled, and a random-effects model meta-analysis was conducted.Main Outcomes and MeasuresPrespecified outcome was the odds ratio, hazard ratio, or risk ratio of cutaneous melanoma comparing low-dose methotrexate exposure with nonexposure.ResultsSeventeen studies (8 RCTs, 5 cohort studies, 4 case-control studies) were eligible for inclusion, and of these, 12 studies with 16 642 cases of melanoma were pooled in the primary analysis. Indications for methotrexate included rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease and were unknown in 5 studies. Compared with unexposed individuals, study participants with methotrexate exposure had a small increased risk of melanoma (pooled relative risk, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.08-1.22), but this did not persist in a sensitivity analysis excluding the largest study (pooled relative risk, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.00-1.24). Subgroup analyses according to comparator group (comparing methotrexate exposure with either immunomodulator alone vs immunomodulator and methotrexate) or the indication for methotrexate being rheumatoid arthritis provided similar risk estimates. Using geographical population melanoma incidence rates, a number needed to harm of 18 630 was calculated in Australia, and 41 425 in North America.Conclusions and RelevanceIn this systematic review and meta-analysis, low-dose methotrexate exposure was associated with an increased melanoma risk, but the absolute risk increase could be considered negligible.

Conditional power (CP) is widely used in clinical trial monitoring to quantify the evidence for futility stopping or sample size adaptation during the trial. When planning an interim analysis in vaccine trials for seasonal infectious diseases, CPs calculated under the hypothesized or currently estimated effect sizes may not truly reflect future data due to seasonal variations in disease incidence and/or vaccine efficacy (VE). Relying on these estimates alone could lead to erroneous decisions. Therefore, we carried out simulation studies to investigate the use of seven different choices for the drift parameter in computing CP or predictive power (PP) in end-of-season interim analysis. Our simulations showed that, when used to inform futility stopping, CP under the hypothesized effect and a weighted PP under a normal prior distribution appear to outperform others in terms of the overall type II error rate. All CPs and PPs considered in this study resulted in comparable powers and expected sample sizes when used to inform sample size adaptation. The performance of either CP or PP largely depends on the extent to which the chosen drift parameter or the prior distribution of the drift parameter matches the remainder of the trial. Weighted CP/PP tends to be less sensitive to settings where observed data and emerging data in future seasons differ substantially as they incorporate both current estimate and future variations. Therefore, weighted strategies deserve further exploration and perhaps increased usage in guiding trial operations because they are more robust to inaccuracies in prediction. In summary, for vaccine trials with seasonal variations, a decision on trial operations should be guided by a careful consideration of plausible CPs and PPs calculated under reasonable assumptions leveraging the data, prior hypotheses, and new evidence on clinical relevance.

29. Data from RAB27B Drives a Cancer Stem Cell Phenotype in NSCLC Cells Through Enhanced Extracellular Vesicle Secretion

Abstract

Cancer stem cells (CSC) within non–small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) tumors drive NSCLC progression, metastasis, relapse, and intrinsic chemoresistance. Understanding the mechanisms that support the malignant phenotypes of NSCLC CSCs may provide insights for improved NSCLC therapeutic interventions. Here, we report that expression of RAB27B, a small GTPase, is significantly upregulated in NSCLC CSCs when compared with bulk cancer cells (BCC). Short hairpin RNA–mediated knockdown of RAB27B leads to a loss of stem cell marker gene expression and reduced NSCLC spheroid growth, clonal expansion, transformed growth, invasion, and tumorigenicity. We find that NSCLC CSCs secrete significantly more extracellular vesicles (EV) than BCCs, and that this is RAB27B-dependent. Furthermore, CSC-derived EVs, but not BCC-derived EVs, induce spheroid growth, clonal expansion, and invasion in BCCs. Finally, RAB27B is required for CSC-derived EV-induced stemness in BCCs. Taken together, our results indicate that RAB27B is required for maintenance of a highly tumorigenic, cancer-initiating, invasive stem-like cell population in NSCLC and RAB27B is involved in propagating EV-mediated communication from NSCLC CSCs to BCCs. Our findings further suggest that inhibition of RAB27B-dependent EV secretion may be a potential therapeutic strategy for NSCLC.Significance:Expression of RAB27B in CSCs leads to elevated levels of EVs that mediate communication between CSCs and BCCs that maintains a stem-like phenotype in NSCLC cells.

The effects of aspirin on melanoma are unclear, with studies reporting conflicting results. Data from two periods of the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study; the randomized placebo-controlled trial period examining daily 100 mg aspirin in older adults with a median follow-up of 4.7 years, and the second period, an additional 2 years of observational follow-up, were utilized in this secondary analysis to examine whether aspirin exposure is associated with a reduced cutaneous melanoma incidence. All melanoma cases were adjudicated and Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare incidence between randomized treatment groups. ASPREE recruited 19,114 participants with a median age of 74 years. During the trial period, 170 individuals (76 aspirin, 94 placebo) developed an invasive melanoma, and no significant effect of aspirin was observed on incident melanoma [HR = 0.81; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.60–1.10]. Including the additional 2 years of observational follow-up (median follow-up of 6.3 years), 268 individuals (119 aspirin, 149 placebo) developed an invasive melanoma, and similar results were observed (HR = 0.81; 95% CI, 0.63–1.03). A reduced number of events was observed with aspirin among females in a subgroup analysis (HR = 0.65; 95% CI, 0.44–0.92); however, the interaction effect with males (HR = 0.92; 95% CI, 0.68–1.25) was nonsignificant (P = 0.17). Our findings from this randomized trial do not provide strong support that aspirin is associated with a reduced risk of invasive melanoma in older individuals. Abstract

Introduction Melanoma surveillance photography (MSP) is a comprehensive surveillance method that comprises two- or three-dimensional total body photography with tagged digital dermoscopy, performed at prescribed intervals. It has the potential to reduce unnecessary biopsies and enhance early detection of melanoma, but it is not yet standard care for all high-risk patients in Australia. This protocol describes a randomised controlled trial (RCT) designed to evaluate the clinical impact and cost-effectiveness of using MSP for the surveillance of individuals at ultra-high or high risk of melanoma from a health system perspective. Methods and design This is a registry-based, unblinded, multi-site, parallel-arm RCT that will be conducted over 3 years. We aim to recruit 580 participants from three Australian states: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, via state cancer registries or direct referral from clinicians. Eligible participants within 24 months of a primary cutaneous melanoma diagnosis will be randomised 1:1 to receive either MSP in addition to their routine clinical surveillance (intervention group) or routine clinical surveillance without MSP (control group). Most participants will continue surveillance with their usual care provider, and the frequency of follow-up visits in both groups will depend on the stage of their primary melanoma and risk factors. The primary outcome measure of the study is the number of unnecessary biopsies (i.e. false positives, being cases where a lesion is biopsied due to suspected melanoma on clinical examination, either with or without MSP, but the resulting histopathology finding is negative for melanoma). Secondary outcomes include the evaluation of health economic outcomes, quality of life and patient acceptability. Two sub-studies will explore the benefit of MSP in high-risk patients prior to a melanoma diagnosis and the diagnostic performance of MSP in the teledermatology setting compared to the en face clinical setting. Discussion This trial will determine the clinical efficacy, cost-effectiveness and affordability of MSP to facilitate policy decision-making at the national and local levels, across primary and specialist care. Abstract

Blockchain technology has subverted traditional supply chain operational models and transformed information interactions along supply chains. This paper examines the impact of blockchain technology on supply chain information collaboration and operating costs. This paper develops a three-level supply chain model based on blockchain technology that incorporates retailer sensitivity to information. First, the manufacturer’s profit function is developed, and the optimal information-sharing quantity and supply chain pricing decisions are analysed. Then, cost models for both the traditional supply chain and the novel supply chain using blockchain technology are developed and the impact of blockchain technology on supply chain operating costs is determined. The results demonstrate that blockchain technology can effectively reduce supply chain operating costs. In addition, this study has an interesting finding that if blockchain adoption is valuable for the supply chain, the quantity of information-sensitive should be moderate. Too many or too few information-sensitive retailers can reduce the value of the blockchain's use. This is because blockchain is implementation will increase the privacy concerns of supply chain companies.

Abstract

Simulating the ice phenology of deep alpine lakes is important and challenging in coupled atmosphere–lake models. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, coupled with two lake models, the freshwater lake (WRF–FLake) model and the default lake (WRF–CLake) model, was applied to Nam Co, a typical deep alpine lake located in the centre of the Tibetan Plateau, to simulate its lake ice phenology. Due to the large errors in simulating lake ice phenology, related key parameters and parameterizations were improved in the coupled model based on observations and physics-based schemes. By improving the momentum, hydraulic, and thermal roughness length parameterizations, both the WRF–FLake model and the WRF–CLake model reasonably simulated the lake freeze-up date. By improving the key parameters associated with shortwave radiation transfer processes when lake ice exists, both models generally simulated the lake break-up date well. Compared with WRF–CLake without improvements, the coupled model with both revised lake models significantly improved the simulation of lake ice phenology. However, there were still considerable errors in simulating the spatial patterns of freeze-up and break-up dates, implying that significant challenges in simulating the lake ice phenology still exist in representing some important model physics, including lake physics such as grid-scale water circulation and atmospheric processes such as snowfall and surface snow dynamics. Therefore, this work can provide valuable new implications for advancing lake ice phenology simulations in coupled models, and the improved model also has practical application prospects in weather and climate forecasts.

Abstract

Abstract A measurement of the transverse polarization of the Λ and Λ ¯ $$ \overline{\varLambda} $$ hyperons in pNe fixed-target collisions at s NN $$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 68.4 GeV is presented using data collected by the LHCb detector. The polarization is studied using the decay Λ → pπ − together with its charge conjugated process, the integrated values measured are P Λ = 0.029 ± 0.019 stat ± 0.012 syst , P Λ ¯ = 0.003 ± 0.023 stat ± 0.014 syst . $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{P}_{\varLambda }=0.029\pm 0.019\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.012\left(\textrm{syst}\right),\\ {}{P}_{\overline{\varLambda}}=0.003\pm 0.023\left(\textrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.014\left(\textrm{syst}\right).\end{array}} $$ Furthermore, the results are shown as a function of the Feynman x variable, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity of the hyperons, and are compared with previous measurements.

Abstract

Abstract A comprehensive study of the local and nonlocal amplitudes contributing to the decay B 0 → K *0(→ K + π − )μ + μ − is performed by analysing the phase-space distribution of the decay products. The analysis is based on pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb −1 collected by the LHCb experiment. This measurement employs for the first time a model of both one-particle and two-particle nonlocal amplitudes, and utilises the complete dimuon mass spectrum without any veto regions around the narrow charmonium resonances. In this way it is possible to explicitly isolate the local and nonlocal contributions and capture the interference between them. The results show that interference with nonlocal contributions, although larger than predicted, only has a minor impact on the Wilson Coefficients determined from the fit to the data. For the local contributions, the Wilson Coefficient C 9 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$ , responsible for vector dimuon currents, exhibits a 2.1σ deviation from the Standard Model expectation. The Wilson Coefficients C 10 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10} $$ , C 9 ′ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9^{\prime } $$ and C 10 ′ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{10}^{\prime } $$ are all in better agreement than C 9 $$ {\mathcal{C}}_9 $$ with the Standard Model and the global significance is at the level of 1.5σ. The model used also accounts for nonlocal contributions from B 0 → K *0[τ + τ − → μ + μ − ] rescattering, resulting in the first direct measurement of the bsττ vector effective-coupling C 9 τ $$ {\mathcal{C}}_{9\tau } $$ .

Abstract

Abstract Decays of Ξ b − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-} $$ and Ω b − $$ {\Omega}_b^{-} $$ baryons to Λ c + h − h ′ − $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+}{h}^{-}{h}^{\prime -} $$ final states, with h − h ′− being π − π − , K − π − and K − K − meson pairs, are searched for using data collected with the LHCb detector. The data sample studied corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb −1 of pp collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The products of the relative branching fractions and fragmentation fractions for each signal mode, relative to the B − → Λ c + p ¯ π − $$ {B}^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}\overline{p}{\pi}^{-} $$ mode, are measured, with Ξ b − → Λ c + K − π − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{-} $$ , Ξ b − → Λ c + K − K − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{K}^{-} $$ and Ω b − → Λ c + K − K − $$ {\varOmega}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{K}^{-} $$ decays being observed at over 5 σ significance. The Ξ b − → Λ c + K − π − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{-} $$ mode is also used to measure the Ξ b − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-} $$ production asymmetry, which is found to be consistent with zero. In addition, the B − → Λ c + p ¯ K − $$ {B}^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}\overline{p}{K}^{-} $$ decay is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the B − → Λ c + p ¯ π − $$ {B}^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}\overline{p}{\pi}^{-} $$ mode.

Abstract

It is well recognized that randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are a powerful tool to investigate causal relationships, and are considered the gold standard level of research evidence. However, RCTs can be expensive and time-consuming, and when they employ strict eligibility criteria, it results in an unrepresentative population and limited external validity. Recently, the registry-based randomized clinical trial (RRCT) has emerged as an alternative trial design. Utilizing registries to underpin such studies, RRCTs can have advantages including rapid recruitment, and enhanced generalizability. In Australia, legislated mandatory reporting of cancer diagnoses means that jurisdictional cancer registries are a rich source of systematically collected patient details, representing sound platforms for comprehensive data capture that can serve as a key tool for further research. We review the roles of cancer registries in Australia, discuss important considerations relevant to the design of RRCTs, and outline the opportunities provided by cancer registries to strengthen cancer research.

43. The role of surveillance imaging for resected high‐risk melanoma

Abstract

Recommendations for surveillance imaging for resected melanoma vary considerably. This study examined the utility of imaging in patients with a high-risk primary melanoma undergoing a protocolized imaging schedule.This retrospective study involved data collection regarding imaging, recurrence, and outcome characteristics for patients referred to the Victorian Melanoma Service from January 2016-April 2020 and managed for resected stage IIC or III melanoma. Patients with a T4b tumor who did not undergo a sentinel lymph node biopsy were included (T4bNX). Recurrences were "clinically detected" if they were primarily detected by patient symptoms or physical examination, or 'imaging-detected' if the patient was asymptomatic. Cox regression models including time-varying co-variates were used to assess the impact of imaging-detected versus clinically-detected recurrence on overall survival.Over a median follow-up time of 2.7 years, 199 patients underwent surveillance imaging (T4bNX:22, IIC:33, IIIA:22, IIIB:60, IIIC:61, IIID:1), and 44% (n = 88) experienced disease recurrence. Imaging detected over half (53%) of all recurrences. In adjusted analyses, mortality risk was reduced after an imaging-detected compared to clinically-detected recurrence at any given time from the start of surveillance (hazard ratio 0.25, 95% confidence interval 0.10-0.66, p = .005).Our study indicates that routine imaging in the early follow-up period of resected T4bNX, stage IIC and III melanoma plays an important role in the detection of asymptomatic recurrences. Imaging-detected recurrence may be associated with a survival benefit and studies with more prolonged follow-up are required to confirm these findings.
